I found this book unreadable. The use of passive voice is generally considered juvenile and difficult to read. The book was full of long, awkward sentances which cut up with numerous commas. I was shocked to read that the author is an English teacher at the college level!

Brilliant novel.......2001-09-06

This is one of those startling yet quiet books that seems to live under the radar. It's literate, beautiful, and aware of small lives. It made me think and the characterization made me feel. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

A book I reread every year........1997-10-24

I loaned my copy of "Heading West" to a very good friend. She found it "disturbing," and wondered at my state of mind. Perhaps I read something different into (or out of) the book. Some may see it as escape fantasy -- bored librarian is about to go out of her head with frustration over her inability to escape the miniscule life her family has chosen for her, then is whisked away into a nightmare which she miraculously survives. However, what I find most fascinating is the way Betts plays on the differences and similarities between the "heroine" and her kidnapper. Like a yo-yo, Nancy is alternately repelled by and attracted to a mind so different from her own. To me, this excerpt, taken from the middle of the book, says it all: "'Dwight?' [The judge] leaned forward. 'Uh, Dwight?' Surely a frightened parent in some car they flew past would report this dark car rocking from side to side in the rain almost grazing their doors. The judge's uplifted hair whipped forward to blind him. In the middle of another roaring downhill loop he slid spread fingers under his flying hair and lunged against Dwight's back with one elbow. 'For God's sake, Dwight!'... "Let him drive fast. I won't submit to being punished by this man, Nancy was thinking. "And Dwight drove fast out of Bandelier only to feel the damp wind in his face. Why not?" Hope you enjoy the book as much as I do!

Evil's return is really awesome and I'm 11 so you can't use age on this anymore cause even though it lacks words the artwork is awesome I agree with the person at the top if you new to manga you probably shouldn't get this book cause you need a strong imagination and if you're a beginner you probably don't know how to comprehend all this awesome work so of course your gonna say it sucked but if you could see the sweat, blood, and tears put into this you would see the story's soul and only then can you see how awesome this manga is (sorry I just got don't watching the whole first season of comic party) but trust me as you get more into manga then come back to this book you'll see that the more experience you have with manga the better it is(I've been reading manga for 3 whole years and watching anime for 5 so I know my stuff) so next time try to read up on your manga before you start throwing flames at them k?

Oh, it's not that bad just different.......2005-10-17

I'm surprised at the negative comments on this manga. It's not that bad, just different. I have been reading manga for a while now and I think that if you are new to reading manga, "Evil's Return" shouldn't be one of your firsts.

Here's why: There isn't much dialogue compared to others and that because the manga relies on the beautiful art and your imagination. The art is really good and has a lot of feeling and the feeling of the art explains more than words.

Secondly, this is a rather mature book.... the storyline is anyway. There isn't any pure nudity, just scantily clad girls (and rather busty for their age) and one too many panty shots. But this is nothing new, you get the same thing in any shojou/magical girl manga.

The manga also revolves around the concept of "good vs. evil" or heaven and hell and this may upset someone who are very religious. You find the same thing in other anime/manga: the author/artist isn't exactly a Christian but their story is based on Christian themes.... there is bound to be some misunderstandings.

To sum things up in a nutshell, the art is excellent and so good that dialogue is not need to explain a certain scene because the art does so. And finally this is a mature manga with mature scenes and characters (16 and up).

I recommend this manga to anyone who is open-minded and is possibly an anime/manga fan. Any anime fan knows that there is more to just "Reading" manga and I feel that some titles are for the veterans. "Evil's Return" is one of them. So far there are only 3 volumes and I've enjoyed the first one enough to buy the others.

One star is far, far too kind........2005-01-23

This manga is so ultimately bad that I had a hard time deciding whether it or Battle Vixens was worse.
But Evil's Return definitley takes the Most-Pathetic-and-Stupidly-laughoutloud-story-I-have-ever-heard award.
When Yumi gets her period (all over the place) it signals to all the demons out there that she's ripe for impregnation so they come to track her down and PLANT THE SEED OF SATAN IN HER WOMB! Geez, no matter HOW many times I say or write that, I still crack up laughing. I am completely at a loss as to how this even got published. I'm guessing it was only licensed as Tokyopop wanted to license as much korean titles as possible.
It's not just the story that is woefully bad, it's also very poorly written and half the time makes no sense. Without the cover art, the reader probably couldnt even register who was the main character. I only know that Yumi is because she's ON the cover. Apart from that, all I know about her is that she's a empty husk with no personality or character whatsoever. On top of that, the whole book took me ten or less minutes to read. Considering most manga takes me around 40 minutes to an hour to get through, that's really pathetic. This is due to the fact that even though the page count is the same of any other manga, the text is limited, there are minimum panels on each page and there is frequent need to take up whole pages with pointless full body shots. Simply a technique to heighten the page count.
The only reason I read Evil's Return was that I had heard how hilariously bad it was and just HAD to see how it was.
Do not buy this. If you feel the urge to see just how bad it is, read it in a bookstore or library if you get the chance.
You can really tell how bad a manga is when it's laugh-out-loud hilarious...when the humour isnt intentional.

Great art work.......2004-08-20

When I finished reading this book, I had to stop and think about what I just read. Not because the book was confusing, but because there was hardly any talking. From the dialoge that was said you or at least I got that feeling that something important is about to happen. The book just cuts off in the end with out explaining what just took place the precending pages. If you want to find out what happen I would suggest you pick up volumes 1 and 2 at the same time, but since 2 has not come out as of today 8-2-04) you might have to wait awhile. The art work is great. And yes you well be looking a a half naked female most the time.

it was ok............2004-07-22

I have just started to read manga, and Evils Return really dissapointed me. The artwork was good, but not a lot happend in the story. It was boring, there were to many pictures and not enough talking, and i don't like any of the characters. There was mild language and i found myself often looking at an almost naked girl. Don't waist your money on this manga. Although this is only my opinion, i'm a teen after all.

Weather Control is out. The Judges are stretched as some alien residents are in temporary housing while new quarters are being built.

Dredd is running on empty when he is assigned to the alien sector and Sector Chief Caine. This Caine has a similar temperament and personality to Admiral Caine, from Battlestar Galactica, if you are familiar with that character.

Not helping the situation are a couple of xenophobic Judges on Caine's team, and past history between one of them and another.

Dredd and Caine don't get along, and the situation deteriorates.

Judges die, plots are revealed and it seems Chief Judge Hershey had a plan all along.

Taking the Law outside of the Big-Meg.......2006-01-20

After enjoying Bad Moon Rising, I decided to pick up a few of these novels. This adventure is an exciting romp across the Black Atlantic, exploring new territory that has barely been touched upon in the 2000AD comics.

Dredd came across perfectly this time, in his gruff, no-nonsense manner. The story fit well with the lore of Judge Dredd and the characters were distinct and consistent.

This is mostly set outside of Mega-City One, but Dredd still manages the impossible in the name of the law, and he explores brand new areas of the bizarre future world.

A very enjoyable read that I honestly recommend to all Judge Dredd fans, and even those that are not fans, but enjoy a good adventure/investigation.

The recipes are simple and work. It's one of those books you can pick up when your family look at you in that what's-for-dinner way and have a meal on the table pretty quickly. It's got some good tips, e.g. making "homemade gravy" in advance and how to jazz up vegetables in a simple way.

Great Cookbook.......2007-07-28

Okay, I admit it, I have a thing for the whole Barefoot Contessa Empire, which means I have almost all the cookbooks and it's a great way to compare and contrast them. With that said, Barefoot Contessa Family Style, is by far my favorite one and the one I would most highly recommend to anyone wanting the most "bang for their buck." First let me say that it's a beautiful cookbook, with great pictures and wonderful comments by Ina Garten. But the main attraction, the recipes, are the stars. I am so impressed with the easy, well written delicious recipes from each chapter that many have become family favorites. How about Parmesan chicken, lightly breaded moist cutlets, with an arugala/parmesan salad with a lemon viniagrette? My family cant't get enough. Lasagna with turkey sausage and green salad with mustard vinaigrette, so good. Did I mention the desserts? Coconut macaroons, chocolate mousse, and the truely spectacular raspberry cheesecake. Finally my families absolute favorite; breakfast. Challah french toast, banana sour cream pancakes, hash browns and chive biscuits all winners. I have thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes easy, beautifully presented and excellent tasting food.

What a great idea to mix excerpts from stories created by some of the best-known western (US) writers and the recipes mentioned in them. The photography is top drawer and the book in general is a time capsule on how the West was won. Wiseman had to go to great pains to assemble the manuscript and the copyright permissions for the excerpts. Let's hope he can come up with another informative cookbook/historical work like it. This book is fun! The excerpts from the various authors' writings are thoroughly enjoyable. Some recipes are practical; others are just plain interesting. Our favorite is 'The Bowl of The Wife of Kit Carson' which we have enjoyed many times, just the two of us or with company.

This book of recipes has been compiled from 70 members of the famed Western Writers of America. Many recipes presented in the volume played parts in scenes from the different authors' variouls novels and screenplays. Colorado is represented by a recipe from Sam Arnold of the famed Fort Restaurant. Included are recipes for just about anything you want to cook, from jerky to sandwiches. I found the book interesting and intend to try some of the recipes, especially, the Egg Gravy for breakfast some morning. To satisy my husband's craving for pozole, I will certainly have to try the Snake Killer's Pozole. This book is a must for lovers of Wild West cooking and stories. I liked this book because it was easy to find the cards I wanted to look at in a short amount of time. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars is because the prices were alittle high on the easy to get cards and in outer space for the rares and holo's. I find that its a great book though for a quick price check when I am buying or trading cards. I wish they would publish a updated book with all the new cards in it.

Emme covers everything in this book that a girl has to know, beauty, body, fashion, money, career, travel, party, romance, family and spirit. It is a really practical how to book, with references to products, really good instructions, great anecdotal info, and how to, where to find this stuff. I bought this book out of curiosity after hearing and learning that Guillermo Descalzi was living as a homeless person in Washington DC, but unfortunately this book is more about Guillermo's carreer as a TV Journalist, the world events he covered while working for SIN and Telemundo and his personal view about where God should be in our life. I did not particular enjoy the last section of the book where he goes into an extensive explanation of the relationship between God and Man and the way how he feels a person should live in relation to God.

I was hoping to get more of an insight of his experiences while he was living as a drug addict and homeless person and how he was able to overcome his addiction.

This book is Okay if you are interested in learning the world events and the person Descalsi interviewed and his personal opinion about religion.

Since meeting Guillermo in 1987, I've been his hairdresser, spent time with him in coffee shops and low key bars -- known for their ambiance. Not a single meeting took place without discussions of mind-blowing intensity. It was as if, so consumed were we in our quest, that we would self-destruct -- in our effort to remain true, committed to the fight and free of hypocrasy.

He covered the Gulf War and broke protocol by crossing over into "no-man's land" where he encountered thousands upon thousands of Iraqi's - mostly women and children fleeing the bombing. The effect of this left him totally shattered; unable to function - not only as an objective journalist; but a man in control of his emotions. He ended up as a drunkard, marijuana and cocaine addict -- living in squalour on the streets of Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant, Washington, DC.

Even for that lifestyle; he still had it in him - the wherewithal to take care of some of his less capable comrades; even to the point of raising money to give one of them a decent burial; thus his arriving late for his scheduled interview with 60 Minutes.

He has since -- with the undying support of Enrique Gratas and others, turned his life around and is back in broadcast television conducting his own show Occurro Asi on Telemundo. This week, March 30, 2000 (last night) Guillermo retured to Washington, DC to promote his memoirs - El Principe de los Mendigos -- The Prince of the Beggars/street-people. I have never seen so many people attend a book reading at any bookstore before. Apparently 250 books were ordered and well over three hundred were called for . . . So many people felt cheated -- but not by Guillermo's captivating story-telling elloquence . . .

(When I asked him at the bookreading if he had mentioned that meeting with 60 Minutes in his book, he sadly reflected that he had not -- for it was uinlike any interview they had ever attempted to conduct before. He showed them up for the ratings hungry hypocrtical wolves they made themselves out to be; ultimately refusing them the interview . . .)

El Príncipe de los Mendigos, es un testimonio personal, emotivo, llevado con tal maestría al papel, que sólo un gran periodista lo puede lograr. La novela nos deja muchas enseñanzas, tantas que, es imposible ennumerarlas. Confieso que compré el libro por curiosidad, y me llevé una sorpresa. Guillermo, es un ejemplo en mil sentidos, tanto positivos como negativos, y sobre todo ha tenido la valentía de compartir sus experiencias con nosotros. De revelar sus errores, sus vicios, sus caídas. Eso tiene mucho valor y solo se puede admirar y agradecer. Estoy segura que después de la lectura del libro, de alguna manera u otra, todos nos encontraremos reflejados en sus hojas. Es muy impresionante su historia ,hay que leerla, es la única forma de vivirla un poquito. FELICITACIONES GUILLERMO! Y a seguir adelante!
