No fluttering of wings and shinning halos this. A straight forward approach that shows the process of graduating (dying) and the reality of love and caring after this experience.

Book Description
The story of two women caught in the rural America of the 1880s, this novel is in part inspired by Perks' own family history. In it, she invites reappraisal of our own society's attitudes toward individuality, religion, illness, sexual orientation, and, especially, friendship, as we approach the turn of a new century.

Typical.......2007-01-19
Well written but very typical. I admit I have not read others in the series. Not bad, but dont start here.
A Forgotten Tale of Dark Magic.......2006-12-01
From the Cover: There stands a twisted tower hidden in the Windhome Mountains. "Something" is imprisoned there - the Sisterhood of the Stars does not know precisely what, but something is bound tight with a wizard's spell so that it can never escape again. Kayl is one of the few to have looked upon the twisted Tower. She has no desire to see it again - she left the Sisterhood long ago, settling down to a quiet life. Her sword lies unused in a secret place beneath the stones of her hearth. But something evil is leaking from the Tower. And now a sorceress and a wizard have appeared on Kayl's doorstep demanding she take up the sword again.
Caught in Crystal.......2003-07-25
Caught in Crystal is the story of Kayl and of how she learns that you can't run from your past; you must face it to put the evil memories to rest. The story starts out on a slightly unusual day for Kayl, who is currently working as an innkeeper with her two father-less children. Kayl is sweeping the front steps when a grand visitor appears, which doesn't often happen in this small town. This mysterious lady fascinates Kayl, especially when she realizes that the lady is from the Sisterhood of Stars. The Sisterhood of Stars is a group of sorceresses that are very powerful, and are respected throughout the Eastern Alliance.
Kayl herself was a member of the Sisterhood of Stars until she got so mad at the politics that she left. Before she left was part of a group that preformed a dangerous mission to find out what was stored in the Twisted Tower. Only half of the group survived. This member of the Sisterhood of Stars is asking her to go back.
At the same time a friend of her husband (both husband and friend went to the Twisted Tower and survived) is telling her that terrible things will happen if she goes back. This friend is a Wizard and he can see the future, but he is not an average seer. This `gift' is more like a curse to him, and has been happening ever since his trip to the Twisted Tower.
This is the story of Kayl's choice, and the repercussions of that choice. It tells how Kayl realizes that she must face her past and can't just hope it will go away. This book was told in a wonderful style that is characteristic of Patricia C. Wrede's work. It certainly kept me interested.
Loggie-log-log-log
Lyra fantasy.......2002-07-29
Caught in Crystal provides a solid background for later happenings in Lyra. I was particularly impressed with the introduction of the 'gray cyrstals' that show up later in other books.
The plot moves quickly and introduces many interesting characters. My only complaint is that we don't get to delve deep enough into those characters. Definitely worth having, especially if you've already read other books in this world.
An outstanding fantasy.......2002-07-20
Patricia C. Wrede is consistently and continually one of my favorite fantasy writers. In recent years, with the popularity of her light-hearted "Enchanted Forest Chronicles," many readers see her as an author that only writes for young adults. In truth, she is an adult fantasy writer first, although now many of her adult fantasy books are being marketed for (and enjoyed by) young adults.
*Caught in Crystal* is one of the novels in her "Lyra" series--a series of fantasy novels that all take place in the same world, although in different places and time periods of that world's history. All the books in this series are excellent novels that stand alone without the need for the other books to prop them up. Three other novels found in this fantasy world were republished together as *Shadows over Lyra*, and another book set in this world is *The Raven Ring*.
I like *Caught in Crystal* because of its strong characters and melancholy, but resigned, tone. It is one of her darker novels. Wrede is a master. Kayl is a character who must deal with aging...as well as going back on a quest to finish something that wasn't finished right the first time.

Customer Reviews:
Great first hand account of the initial production of Star Trek........2007-05-22
I felt this book presented a raw Behind the Scenes look at Star Trek the initial series. This book was written after Gene Roddenberry's death so there is a feeling that things that were neatly hidden away have become reported. One thing the book points out is that Gene was by no means the creative genius of Star Trek. The series was the result of many creative people. It was also interesting to note the extent for which Roddenberry would go for royalties, even securing 1/2 of the royalties of the original Star Trek Theme by writing this obscure lyric that would never be performed, nor known about from the original composer. Good stories about Shatner's hairpiece and Roddenberry's falling out with Nimoy. All good reading.
One of My Favorite Things.......2006-02-14
I assume that if you're reading this review, we share in common the belief that Star Trek The Original Series (TOS) was great. Perhaps you bought the complete set of DVD's, like I did. The DVD's are worth it; I consider them one of my most treasured collections. I watch the episodes with my kids, and they love it. TOS is great television, with great writing asking intriguing questions about man's existence. Television writing has devolved since that time.
I've read both "Inside Star Trek" and Yvonne Fern's "Gene Roddenberry, The Last Conversation". Both books look at different angles of Star Trek. Fern's book deals with the philosophical side of Gene Roddenberry, and how he perceived himself. "Inside Star Trek" deals with the business end of the show and all the difficulties encountered in producing it. It's an impressive story, and it's amazing that it ever got produced. Herb Solow and Robert Justman did a fantastic job producing the series.
It's been about 33 years since I was in college. After dinner in the cafeteria, a group of us would congregate to watch Star Trek reruns on the local UHF station. That was a crucial time in the success of Star Trek, when the UHF stations picked it up, because it was otherwise a ratings failure on the networks. If it wasn't for the phenomenal success of Star Trek appearing in reruns on UHF, Star Trek would have been just a vague memory.
I would not recommend this book to new viewers of Star Trek, until they have seen the shows, because the book tends to reveal the magic. Roddenberry is a god to some, but he had "feet of clay". Also, reading about the actors tends to diminish the herioc stature of the characters they protrayed. "Inside Star Trek" shows you all the nuts and bolts of how the thing was put together, and how it fell apart.
Looking back, Star Trek was an incredible achievement.
This is the best non fiction book I have ever read........2004-09-11
This book is a masterpiece of non fiction documentary reporting. It explains what really happned way back when far more clearly and deeply then anything I have ever read, period! We need books like these on almost every subject. This book dispells so many myths its mind boggeling. I encourage everyone to read this book even if they hate star trek, just for an example of good writing.
Priceless for every TOS fan and trekkie.......2004-04-01
I could never have dreamed of the value of this book - I bought it and was amazed! This book is a must-have for every fan of the original series and real trekkie!
The complete background of the beginning of the series, the problems, the costs and the riscs to make the series - all covered within this essential book. It was great fun to read and
extremely interesting. Believe it or not, I had some good laughs too!
Hard to realize how some things have been done and worked out. The real point in trying to catch a copy of it is that the writers were really there at this time! They perfectly know what they are talking about.
Try to get a copy of that book as fast as possible. Out of print for some time now it is very hard to find and I'm afraid I won't sell mine... *g*
VERY IN DEPTH LISTENING!.......2002-11-24
This set of two tapes sete the record straight on alot of myths about Star Trek: TOS. Herb Solow and Robert Justman do a real good job in telling their version of the story. The story of a man, myth, his dream, the team that put the series togther, and of Desilu Studios, and NBC who took a gamble to help fufill the impossible dream. STAR TREK! Kudos to Herb and Robert or RJ for giving an unbaised version of the genesis of a television legend!

Book Description
“Part treatise, part miscellany, unfailingly entertaining.”
–The New York Times
“A small pearl of a book . . . a great tale of the growth of a modern city as seen through the rise and fall of the lowly oyster.”
–Rocky Mountain News
Award-winning author Mark Kurlansky tells the remarkable story of New York by following the trajectory of one of its most fascinating inhabitants–the oyster.
For centuries New York was famous for this particular shellfish, which until the early 1900s played such a dominant a role in the city’s life that the abundant bivalves were Gotham’s most celebrated export, a staple food for all classes, and a natural filtration system for the city’s congested waterways.
Filled with cultural, historical, and culinary insight–along with historic recipes, maps, drawings, and photos–this dynamic narrative sweeps readers from the seventeenth-century founding of New York to the death of its oyster beds and the rise of America’s environmentalist movement, from the oyster cellars of the rough-and-tumble Five Points slums to Manhattan’s Gilded Age dining chambers. With The Big Oyster, Mark Kurlansky serves up history at its most engrossing, entertaining, and delicious.
“Suffused with [Kurlansky’s] pleasure in exploring the city across ground that hasn’t already been covered with other writers’ footprints.”
–Los Angeles Times Book Review
“Fascinating stuff . . . [Kurlansky] has a keen eye for odd facts and natural detail.”
–The Wall Street Journal
“Kurlansky packs his breezy book with terrific anecdotes.”
–Entertainment Weekly
“Magnificent . . . a towering accomplishment.”
–Associated Press
Customer Reviews:
Who knew?.......2007-09-27
First off, I am a chef...so my five-star rating might be taken with a grain of sea salt. Also, I am a chef from New York City...who still opens a couple of hundred oysters a week.
I learned bunches from Mark's book. I was able to justify a long held stance about storing oysters in the face of superstition from my twenty-something rock-star staff.
I owned a restaurant in Telluride, Colorado back in the 70's. We dug around in the basement and found menus from the 1890's that featured fresh New York City oysters.....long before refrigeration. The book reveals how this worked, and consequently saved me a few hundred dollars every week. Five stars indeed1
Meanwhile, Mark gives an in-depth sociological, geographic and gastronomical account of how the oyster affected life in New York and America. In many ways the oyster is the canary in the coal mine of our inland waterways. If the oyster is happy with the water....you are probably OK with the water. No oyster.....don't even think about jumping in. Oysters kept New York City harbor water clean for millenia....until overwhelmed by chemical pollution.
Just this morning I picked up Mother Jones, and read an article about the largest oil spill in American history: in Newtown Creek between Queens and Brooklyn. Having read Mark's book....I already knew the history of Newtown Creek...once the source of millions of oysters and the support of an entire social structure.
Oysters had started a comeback there in 1997. Ooops. Back to the drawing board.
Buy the book. Learn something.
An Entertaining and Fun Voyage of Discovery!.......2007-09-23
Who would have thought it possible that anyone could produce a great book on the humble oyster? Intrigued by the cover, I picked up Mark Kurlansky's "The Big Oyster" and embarked on an entertaining and fun voyage of discovery!
I learned that mankind is obsessed with the oyster and has been consuming them for thousands of years. Americans are among the world's biggest producers and consumers of oysters, which played a huge role in the growth of New York city and the young republic.
I found "The Big Oyster" so well written and enthralling that I read it cover to cover, and then went out and bought every book written by Mark Kurlansky. As a voracious consumer of books, it was a wise decision!
I highly recommend this excellent book to anyone searching for a great read!
How can anyone not love this book?.......2007-07-24
I'm not sure what kind of person would buy this book. It's not 100% history, not 100% science, not 100% recipe, it's a little of everything. After reading this book, I'd say this book is for someone who's not afraid to try something different, some who likes oysters and a little history to go with their oysters. So what is this book about?
1) It's a little bit oysters. The science: such as scientific names, reproduction, anatomy, etc. Just a little, not too much to bore the casual reader, but not enough to interest the casual scientist. I tried to find more about oysters online but there's not a lot of info, I suppose I should go read a book on it.
2) It's a lot about the early to mid-1800's history of New York City. As I like history, I really liked this part.
3) It's a little about oyster recipes. Sprinkled throughout this book are recipes, many from old books and from famous cooks and restaurants. That's a gem. It must have take some effort to collect the recipes and whether you like them or not they are interesting, at least for their historical aspect.
4) It's a little about the history of the oyster trade. This is a very good part of the book as I don't think you could find much written on it anywhere else.
5) New York society in the old days. Talked about the who's who and where they would eat. Interesting reading.
6) New York slums and the inhabitants, also interesting reading.
So to summarize, this book is about oysters, the eating of oysters, the oyster trade and New York city. You can't pidgeonhole this book because it's not history, not gastronomy, but a little of everything. It's quite well written and very easy to read. I enjoyed reading it, a break from my regular diet of thrillers. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I'm going to get Cod and Salt, two other books by this author that got mixed reviews. But I think the author deserves my custom after this book.
As usual - easy read.......2007-06-27
Another book by MK. Nice and easy read and somewhat entertaining. Plenty of historical references but true historians could have plenty od reservations about it as well. Overall C to B-.
Quick and Interesting Read.......2007-06-09
I bought this book halfway as a joke for some oyster-loving friends, but it turned out the be a great page turner -- finished it in about 3 sittings. It's a great light read with some excellent information about oysters and a surprisingly fascinating history of NYC.

Worth the price used.......2004-09-03
After a brief but helpful introduction, the authors provide 99 recipes in three main sections: vegetables (55), meat (18) and fish (26). The sections are further divided by ingredients, so you get three cauliflower recipes in a row, and, later, two with scallops, and so on. I'm personally appreciative of the number of bean/legume recipes (10), and there are several good ideas for pesto and lasgane sprinkled throughout.
The recipes range from very easy to mildly challenging, but the authors do not cut corners with ingredients. There's no garlic powder or canned crushed tomatoes here (canned peeled are okay). The illustrations by Miriam Dougens are nice, but I always prefer photos. This book will not lie open and flat on its own.
Friendly, Fun, and Really Good.......2000-03-01
Out of a selection of nearly a dozen books on Italian cooking, Penza & Corsi's book steps forward with a friendly smile and warm handshake. No airs, no yuppie insistance on unknown ingredients rise up to cow the cook. If some ingredients aren't always available, Penza & Corsi tell you what to do instead. They make new recipes easy in every respect--not because they're overly simple, but because the authors make them seem so. The results are delicious. By all means, try it!
An outstanding cookbook overall........1999-10-19
Coming from Long Island, New York, I grew up on southern Italian cooking and I am still a great fan of it. I brought "Sician American Pasta:99 Recipes You Can't Refuse" a few years ago and it turned out to be one of my best buys in cook books. This is because there are so many excellent recipes packed in one cook book that I have used and have turned out great. John Penza & Tony Corsi have written a little gem in the area of cooking in general and it is more than worth the price you pay.

Today, collectors can find examples in many markets of old and new wares, so their search is often happily rewarded. This book will enable them to sort out the makers, dates, marks and range of values they encounter. Hundreds of clear color photographs show the many styles and range of quality. Old News But Enjoyable.......2006-09-30
I first read Roseanne's two books. They were barely readable. This book by Roseanne's sister, Geraldine, while definitely too wordy, was readable and sometimes even interesting. This book is low on incomprehensible rambling and high on the family history of the Barr family and the story of Roseanne's rise to fame.
The author definitely wrote in order to tell her side of the story regarding her being fired by Roseanne and also regarding Roseanne accusing their parents of sexual molestation. After reading all three books, I lean toward Geraldine's version. After Roseanne's head injury as a teen, she suffered from mental problems, which hurts her credibility. Also, I don't doubt that Geraldine helped Roseanne get where she got in her career. Roseanne said that herself and later retracted it.
Anyway, this feud is old news and no one probably thinks about reading these books anymore, but Roseanne has been in the limelight again. She has had her show released on DVD and also has recorded a children's DVD. Maybe she will make a comeback? The public has probably forgotten all of her 80's and 90's antics.
Sibling rivaltry between sisters or . . . ?.......2005-12-05
This book preports to give the "real" biography of Roseanne Barr, and it is colorful indeed. Still, one wonders about the author's (her sister, Geraldine's) credibility since much of the text is presented in a negative light that highlights Barr's faults. The passages on Barr's accusations of childhood sexual abuse are intriguing and raise skepticism; but overall, the book has a whiney, defensive tone coming from a sister who was suprisingly and, in her view, unjustly fired as Barr's agent/promoter. More info about the development and execution of the popular "Roseanne" television show would have been interesting. In my opinion, the writing in this book is much too padded and reads a bit like a gossip tabloid.
Invaluable portrait of "self will run riot".......2004-01-19
This book is an invaluable portrait of Roseanne and her family, and how her family coped with Roseanne's sexual abuse allegations against her father in the early 1990s. It is also, primarily, the story of sisters, who worked together to create a successful business (Roseanne's career) and how the relationship came apart when Roseanne became a household name. On one level the book is not without its flaws: it is overwritten and at times repetitive. However, these flaws are balanced by the author's mostly successful attempts to present all sides of the story in straight-forward prose. Geraldine Barr is as candid discussing her own shortcomings -- and those of her family -- as she is in discussing Roseanne's and the book emerges as a cut above the average tell-all memoir as a result. That the Barr family seemed to become a closer unit in the wake of Roseanne's abuse allegations is the real story here.
The Tale of Two Sisters.......2001-10-26
This story paints a very different portrait of Roseanne. According to Geraldine; the author and Roseanne's sister; "Rosanne; the domestic goddess" was a creative venture between the two sisters. Geraldine helped Roseanne get to the top; only to be abandoned. The entire story leads you to speculate what happened and before the end; you can pretty much figure it all out. If you wondered what happened with Roseanne and her family after she publicly described her memories of sexual molestation; this story tells you; the sad details. (no conclusion as to where the truth lies; but it literally broke the family apart) An interesting story about two sisters growing up in Utah and making a dream come true. Although Roseanne was known for her comedy; this tells the story of a very unhappy and unfunny woman and her sister. It's an interesting read; even if she wasn't famous; the story line is unique. The book flows nicely and is an easy read.
Not Worth Your Time.......1999-06-15
If you were to total all the interesting parts of this book, you'd come up with about thirty pages. Mostly, it chronicles how Roseanne Barr went off her rocker when she got involved with Tom Arnold and then, with the aid of false memory syndrome, betrayed her family. If you have a lot of patience and don't mind reading the same thing over and over couched in different (yet still unlyrical) language, then it might entertain you just for the dirt it gives on a major celebrity.
