                      Book Description

Bruyn did not know what would become of him when he saw thus fall all the happiness of his old age, and he would to save her have shown her this page. He ordered him to be sought, but Rene had run off at full speed, fearing he should be killed; and departed for the lands beyond the seas, in order to accomplish his vow of religion. When Blanche had learned from the above-mentioned abbot the penitence imposed upon her well beloved, she fell into a state of great melancholy, saying at times, "Where is he, the poor unfortunate, who is in the middle of great dangers for love of me?"

                      Book Description

In a dark world of magic and war, Derek Re'Dell returns to his home village of Tramidia with a mysterious relic: a simple amulet believed to be a pointer that will lead to the Book of Drake, the last spellbook of the most powerful magic user who ever lived. But word of the amulet spreads quickly and Derek soon finds his life, as well as the lives of those around him, in mortal danger. The Nine Lands is the gripping account of Derek's journey east to the great city of Gelbinor, the city of scholars, where he believes he will ultimately find the truth behind his amulet. He is accompanied by his best friend, Morgan, a deeply traditional and religious man, and by his daughter, Rebecca, an inquisitive young woman, struggling to find herself. In the end, only one person will ultimately possess the powerful relic, and thus control the fate of the Nine Lands.

I read very little fiction and almost never read fantasy, but this was recommended by a friend who's opinion I generally agree with. It was a great read. Finished in just a few sittings (also rare for me).

I particularly like the detail and breadth of the characters. It seemed less like a fantasy novel than good story set in a fantasy world.

While not technically a D&D book, this had all the classic feels of one. Mr. Leff has done a wonderful job of creating his own world and allowing us a brief tour of it. The story has a great hook and wisely allows us to sympathize with all characters, both the good and the bad. As a first time author, Mr. Leff has started out far above many other authors first time works. This reviewer can honestly say that he finds The Nine Lands to be a better first time work than that of Terry Brooks, there is much more maturity and well rounded lines of thought. As first works go, this book is certainly on the right path. Mr. Leff treates us as adults and not as a reader who needs to be guided by the hand through his world. It will be lovely to watch the growth and progression of his works as he continues on.

5 out of 5 stars Get lost!! (in this book).......2005-12-16

I can't remember the last time I enjoyed losing myself in a novel more than in The Nine Lands.
The characters and scenery Mr. Leff paints with his unique literary style are nothing short of inspired.
If you want reality, read Stephanopolis.
If you want to take an extraordinary trip beyond reality, read Leff.

                      5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2005-12-08

For those of you who are into the fantasy genre or just want a good, fun read, this book is perfect for you. Mr. Leff creates a facinating "other world" that you can escape to and stay connected with the characters. I look forward to more of the same as the story continues in Book Two.
I highly recommend it to all readers as a diversion from the mundane. Bravo!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant New Author!! Welcome Mr. Leff!.......2005-12-08

I was thrilled to read Steven Leff's new novel, and think that perhaps the "Harry Potter" fans may have a new series of fabulous books to read. I am hopeful that some film producer will turn this extremely engaging novel into a film...sooner than later. I look forward to more of Mr. Leff's offerings, and recomend "The Nine Lands" without reservation!!

Over time, twin enterprises Cook's Illustrated magazine and America's Test Kitchen have published many books dedicated to providing exhaustively tested recipes--"best" versions of traditional dishes plus definitive takes on kitchen equipment and ingredients. Some series readers have complained of endlessly recycled or rejiggered recipes; others take each book at face value, finding the formulas and cooking insights good and helpful. America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, which calls itself a cookbook, cooking school, and kitchen reference in one, offers over 1,200 approachable recipes for a very wide range of dishes--from "weekday" fare like Creamy Rice Casserole, Cheesy Nachos with Spicy Beef, and Skillet Lasagna, to dressier recipes, including Pan-Seared Lamb Chops with Red Wine Rosemary Sauce, Roasted Trout Stuffed with Bacon and Spinach, and Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse. There are "specialty" chapters devoted to sandwiches, drinks, and slow cooker and pressure cooker dishes; a grilling section is a tutorial in itself.

Unorthodox, "better-way" approaches abound. For example, a fried chicken formula instructs the cook to wet the bird's dry coating slightly before it's applied for an extra-crunchy crust. Predictably, side bars feature equipment and ingredient evaluations, on bottled salsa, for example; "good food/bad food" photographs show readers what to aim for when producing fare like holiday cookies; and there are tips, charts, and "Cooking 101" sidebars galore. Step-by-step photos offer more direction still.

Though the majority of recipes are sound and yield tempting results, readers poring through the book will note gaffes and curiosities. The recipe for poached eggs, for example, offers the option of extra cooking for "firm yolks" (hard-boiled poached eggs, anyone?) and hamburgers receive an indentation before cooking to avoid "puffy" domed burgers, a novel problem that could, in any case, be solved by proper shaping. The addition of sugar to some savory dishes--for example, a pan sauce for steak--is misguided. Readers should also know that the book, which comes in loose-leaf form, requires some assembly, and that the pages themselves are quite thin, making them vulnerable to spills and tearing in daily kitchen use.

These things said, the book delivers solid, family-friendly dishes with enough fully orchestrated "how- to" to make even novice cooks feel secure when tackling the basics or more ambitious fare.

What's New in the Revised Editon?
First out in 2005, America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook was praised for its recipe ease, inclusiveness, and wealth of helpful information, but was also criticized for its physical production. A loose-leaf book with its pages included separately, readers found it inconvenient to assemble and its paper impractically thin. The revised edition is printed on heavier stock, and arrives with its pages already on its rings (there are two more now, for sturdiness) with only chapter dividers to insert, a simple task.

In addition, new inside front and back covers provide information on emergency substitutions, roasting guidelines, equivalent measures, and more--and a "Light Recipes" chapter has been included. Without defining precisely what "light" means--fewer fats and carbs, or a combo?--the section offers attractive all-course recipes, such as turkey chili, veggie burgers, meat and cheese lasagna, and chocolate bundt cake. Some readers will welcome the "slimming" of familiar dishes while others will find some of the manipulations--using cornstarch to thicken the sauce in fettuccine alfredo or ricotta to add body to a reduced-fat pesto, for example--unappealing. The book, however, remains a valuable kitchen tool--and one with greater convenience and durability than before. --Arthur Boehm

I have over a thousand cookbooks. I am a pretty accomplished cook with some professional experience. My wife on the other hand is potentially a great cook who is just getting acquainted with the kitchen. We both agree that this is our favorite basic cookbook. I highly recommend this book as a basic reference for any one learning how to cook. As a well experienced cook I can vouch for the quality of the recipes as tested by America's Test Kitchen. If you had to buy only one cookbook this would be the one.

My still favorite and mostly used source is the original Julia Child Cookbook based on her TV programs of years ago but this America's Test Kitchen publication,I suspect, I will use a great deal.

4 out of 5 stars Test Kitchen Cookbook.......2007-09-26

I really like this cookbook because it has good pictures and explainations for techniques with which new cooks may be unfamiliar. Putting the pages and dividers in yourself is clear and easy. The pages are a little thinner than I would prefer for a cookbook, but I just use a clear plastic page protector that one might use for a portfolio or scrapbook to keep the page I am using clean. I highly recommend it!

Amazon did an outstanding timely job getting me the cookbook. This cookbook is the very best I have ever read. I gave one to my daughter and will be ordering one for myself. Thanks.

These things said, the book delivers solid, family-friendly dishes with enough fully orchestrated "how-to" to make even novice cooks feel secure when tackling the basics or more ambitious fare. --Arthur Boehm

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Beginners.......2001-11-07

All of the blocks in this book are made up of triangle or square pieces. On the up side, each block is very easy to piece. on the down side, each block contains a large number of pieces, so it can be time consuming to cut out. I love the book because I enjoy templates and I like the black and white pages that allow you to color the pieces in (like a coloring book) so that you can design your own quilt.

4 out of 5 stars Many lovely examples of quite complicated star patterns........1998-07-01

This book is for the experienced patchworker. The star patterns are clearly laid out with detailed instructions. The patterns have many pieces which would challenge a beginner to patchwork.

                                Book Description

Indispensable but much taken for granted, few inventions have done as much to ease the human lot as the lavatory. In this new edition of Temples of Convenience and Chambers of Delight, Lucinda Lambton explores the development of the lavatory from the latrine and the garderobe to the sophisticated and exquisitely decorated piece of sanitary engineering that turned a bodily necessity into an aesthetic delight. Here are 150 captioned, color images of the brilliant and amusing designs she uncovered in her search across Britain, from cherub-bedecked bathtubs to a toilet fashioned as a lion. Lucinda Lambton is the author of An Album of Curious Houses.

                                    Book Description

Lost Black Sheep chronicles the wartime exploits of Marine Corps ace Chris Magee, former member of the famous Black Sheep Squadron, his improbable postwar odyssey, and the surprising developments of his later years.

Magee was the leading ace under the Black Sheep's flamboyant leader, Major Greg “Pappy” Boyington. A free-spirited intellectual with the heart of a warrior and the soul of a poet, Magee grew up on Chicago's rambunctious South Side dreaming of the day when he could fly fighter planes into combat. His dream came true when, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he transferred from the Royal Canadian Air Force to the U.S. Marine Corps and received training as a fighter pilot. He was sent to the South Pacific where his bravery and piloting skills earned him the Navy Cross and the title of “Ace.”

When the war ended, Magee refused to pursue a conventional lifestyle or take advantage of the fame that awaited him back home, choosing instead to seek new adventures. During the next twelve years he walked the razor's edge: black marketeer, bootlegger, volunteer fighter pilot for the fledgling nation of Israel, courier for a covert group of U.S. “businessmen” involved in Latin American politics, and, eventually, bank robber.

Then, one day, Magee found an envelope slipped under his front door with a note inside that ultimately changed his life, causing him to revisit parts of his past he thought were forever forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars The Wildman Found.......2005-08-27

Chris Magee, the enigmatic "Wildman" of Pappy Boyington's Marine "Blacksheep" fighter squadron of World War II, disappeared in the late 1950's after serving as a fighter pilot in Israel's fledgling Air Force and also after serving several years in an American penitentiary for robbing two banks in one day. Then journalist Robert T. Reed discovered that the "Wildman" was his biological father. And through an astute process of "investigative reporting," Mr. Reed has pieced together a thoroughly fascinating portrait of a gifted pilot, talented and sensitive human being and quintessential "free spirit." Mr. Reed's book constitutes a fine addition to the annals of those whom Tom Brokaw has designated America's "Greatest Generation." It's indisputable that the efforts of extraordinary men like Chris Magee were crucial in bringing victory to the Allied Powers in history's greatest conflict.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-08-14

If you are a fan of WW II VMF-214, "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and "Once They Were Eagles", this is a must read. Two stories in one. That of "Bandanna Maggie" before, during and after WW II. Also, a determined author's quest about a Marine hero he did not know until too long. Follow the trail of a Marine I'm sure Gregory Boyington admired as a great fellow warrior after the "big one" and his attepts to find himself in war and peace. (Success, or failure? Yes? No? You decide.) A remarkable book for those who are interested in the men of 214. As I said, if you liked the two first books mentioned, you will love this one written by the one man who would have done it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography with an interesting twist.......2002-06-15

If, like me, you read Baa Baa Blacksheep and Once They Were Eagles, this is for you. The mysterious life and whereabouts of Chris Magee almost haunted me after reading Frank Walton's Once They Were Eagles. The information about Chris Magee in Walton's book and the fascinating letter it contains left many questions about Magee that begged for answers. I knew this would be an interesting book before I read it and I was not let down. I did not know it would be emotionally provocative. I won't spoil the surprises. Don't read too many reviews lest you not get the full effect. Pick it up soon.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating, superbly written biography.......2001-09-12

In Lost Black Sheep: The Search For WWII Ace Chris Magee, Robert Reed reveals saga of an extraordinary man in a real-life story of war and peace, crime and punishment. Chris Magee was one of the legendary Black Sheep Squadron under "Pappy" Boyington's command. He grew up with stories of World War I aviation heroes and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Chris transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps and went to the South Pacific where his personal bravery and skills as a combat flier earned him the Navy Cross and the respect of his peers. After the war ended Chris spent the next twelve years as a black marketeer, bootlegger, volunteer fighter pilot for Israel, courier for a covert American group involved in Latin American politics, and finally a bank robber. In his middle years he turned his life around and became a respected journalist. By age 70 he was living in retirement in a rustic apartment on Chicago's North Side. Then Chris found an envelope slipped under his front door with a note that compelled him to revisit parts of his past he thought long buried. Several of Magee's letters, poetry, and other writings are woven into the text (including a short story titled "Keep Moving". Lost Black Sheep is a fascinating, superbly written biography of a very unusual American unusal life.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Hits home.......2001-08-30

I received my copy of Bob's book two weeks after I had scheduled a trip to Waterbury Connecticut to the 56th reunion of my own father's WWII military group. My father passed away last year after a long battle with alzheimers, and I too was on a quest of sorts. I was never able to get my father to open up about his war experiences on the beaches of Normandy and beyond, and know now that their generation was truly the "great generation" of our time. This book really hit home. The content was interesting enough that I read the book at one sitting, and it provoked questions of a very personal nature to me. For those of us who are members of the "baby boom" generation I hope we all start asking our Fathers, Mothers, Uncles, Aunts - anyone with personal experiences about this remarkable time in our history to share their stories with us while they are able. We should also give them a sincere Thank You for their sacrifices.
