This would make a very funny movie. Every scene in this romp novel was great and easy to visualize. It's been a long time since I was able to be so nicely distracted from life realities. This was my first Carol Higgens Clark read but it won't be the last. Delicious.

After two members of the Settlers' Club die of suspicious deaths, the clubs' president asks his friend Regan Riley who is in N.Y. for a crime conference, to help. The dead club members promised to donate valuable diamonds to the club but the diamonds are now missing, the book is great, it keeps you guessing until the very end about who commited the murder(if a murder even was commited).

A murder mystery, robbery, farcical characters, love story, dynamic sleuth, Regan from L. A. flies to New York to visit family and friends and to attend a 'crime' conference. She gets involved in a real crime when Thomas Pilsner, asks for her help in located some missing diamonds which were anticipated as dowry for the continuation of the Settler's Club. Two of the members had pledged four expensive diamonds but, before they can contribute this largesse, they are victims of suspicious deaths.
Thomas fears that he will lose his position with the almost-defunct club and perhaps be indicted for the murders of these two old men. Lydia and her ex-boyfriend, Burkhardt, appear to be a part of the conspiracy to keep the killer from being found. A couple of "stuff sheep" (Dolly & Bah-Bah) have a bit to do with locating the diamonds for Regan, so that she can discover the real killer and get on with her love-life with suitor, Jack. She has to invite him to accompany her home to California to have any privacy from this erratic group.
At the celebration party, securing the future of the Settler's Club and Mr. Pilsner as continuing President, one of the guests intervened to suggest that she and Jack drive down the Coast (which is something Jeff did while out in LaJolla one summer); "Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. You two should try it..."
Since this book was released, Carol Clark has come out with JINXED & POPPED (both in 2003) and BURNED & HITCHED (both in 2005); I am curious to know whether she married Jack!

I feel like I got fleeced into buying this book and I only paid $1.00 at Half Price Books. I still believe I was taken.

Laughable.......2004-05-07
Carol Higgins Clark thrives off her famous mother's name. She completely expolits the well-known "Higgins Clark" to sell her books, which are to say the least, trash.
Fleeced was a waste of time.. and it was a VERY quick read. The dialogue is dumb and predictable, the characters under-developed and shallow, and the plot is almost non-existent. This book lacked any suspense and was very, VERY slow. One particularly laughable part was when they discovered who the killer was.
"Oh my god!" cried Regan.
"Oh sweet Jesus!" yelled Clara.
Dear Lord, what a ridiculous piece of trash this book was.
Please, Carol. Go back to your acting.. unless you're as good an acress as you are a writer. You will never reach your mother's caliber in writing.

Like his first novel in this series, the book is written with a series of fragments instead of complete sentences.
Also, he can't even get the spelling of Conan's clan correct. He continually calls Conan's clan "Conarch" but John Maddox Roberts established it as "Conach."
Great battles and storyline.......2006-12-19
I really enjoyed the entire Kern series. The story is compelling and moves along at a great pace. There are very few slow moments in any of the books. If you have read any previous Conan books this is a little different. It follows the same principals of strength and honor, and combat as a way of live. I enjoyed the internal turmoil of Kern being an outcast in his own tribe.
The lead character is not Conan, but Kern. He has the same traits as a young Conan though, and lives while Conan is King.
The epic battle sequences are believable and very well described. Some of them very graphically.

Pretty solid Victory..........2005-11-18
The 3rd book of the Legend of Kern trilogy was pretty good.
Not fantastic, nor awesome in scope, it still was a decent enough adventure read. The 1st novel is still the best.
The grammar and Coleman's style of writing can be sometimes downright tiresome to read. It reads very awkward and stilted, making the flow feel bogged down at times.
Overall, the final battle scene was decent. I would have liked to've read a more truly spectacualr battle scene, especially between Kern and the mighty Grimner. But it was much too fast, making Kern slay both Lodur and Grimner in such short time...I felt a bit cheated.
I also would've liked to have read about more of the Wolf Clan being killed off. It would have come off as more desperate that way. Instead, very few die. I was more expecting very few survivors after such a titanic battle sequence.
Also, the love triangle angle that Coleman worked up to in these 3 volumes - just fades away. Never resolving itself, one way or another. Didn't care much for that. (Mayhap that means Coleman has plans for future Kern novels...?)
Still, despite my many gripes, Coleman still dishes out a pretty decent fantasy novel, full of action and adventure.
An ending to rival Armageddon.......2005-08-09
Coleman's ending to this trilogy can be rivaled only by Armageddon itself... the series is brought to the climax and no hero leaves unscathed. Ultimately this was an ending of epic proportions. Unfortunately, this book is not as good as the second one, which I feel was the strongest of the series. Regardless, the whole series was a fine read, and highly recommended for fans of fantasy.
fine swords and sorcery .......2005-07-27
Conan, the Cimmerian who became `king of another realm' was a legend in his own time. However, there were other warriors of Cimmeria who were as brave and strong as Conan. They too did their best to keep their land safe from the Vinir and their masters the Ymirish who came from the North to conquer and settle the lands. They are led by the giant Grimnir, the son of the god Ymir who is invulnerable in battle. Only Kern Wolf-Eye, an outcast from the clan, ever hurt him and the giant wants his revenge.
While the Vinir and Ymirish are using various techniques to get the clans fighting among themselves, Kern is traveling the breadth and width of Cimmeria hoping to unite the clans against a common enemy. It is when Kern exposes one of the most powerful clan chiefs as a shapeshifting ally of the Ymirish do the clans put aside their differences to fight as one against the enemy. In the end it is Kern who will face off against Grimnir with the winner of their battle deciding the fate of Cimmeria for years to come.
The protagonist, who looks like the Ymirish with their soldier eyes and inability to stay warm, doesn't let the fact that he looks like the enemy stop him from going to battle against them even as his own clan fears him and casts him out. There is plenty of action in this swords and sorcery tale but the true magic of this story lies in one man's courage to go against his heritage and fight to keep Cimmeria free even if it means his death.

This is a hardcover book published for the Science Fiction Book Club in 1973. It contains the sixth and seventh books in Edgar Rice Burroughs' "Mars" series. The book has a great painted cover by Frank Frazetta.
The Mastermind of Mars is about an American soldier in WWII who gets transported to Mars. He ends up as the assistant to a Martian mad scientist. He falls in love with a beautiful girl whose body was stolen by an old hag. Naturally, he goes on a quest to get her rightful body back for her.
A Fighting Man of Mars is about a native Martian who goes on a quest to rescue a beautiful kindnapped woman that he loves. That is a typical Burroughs plot, but there are a few twists here that keep it from getting too formulaic. The most intriguing variation on the plot is that he meets a different woman along the way, who may be a better match for him than the woman he set out to save.
These are both good examples of pulp fiction that should appeal to fans of ERB.

I purchased this book for my nephew to help him with cooking his meals instead of wasting his money on junk fast food and it seem to help with all of the recepits inside. Anyone who buys a slow cooker will find this book helpful.

A lot of new good ideas. I mostly look for recipes on the internet but it's hard to find new ideas there, you have to know what you're looking for. This book has several really neat ones, layered several course dinners such as herbed chicken, sweet potatoes and stuffing which was a really big hit and so easy to do.

I like this book, being new to the crock pot scene I didnt have any real recipies and this book allowed me to try new things and start making great food.
My only qualm would be that it has a good amount of recipies that are out of the box and too different for my taste. The good recipies make up for it though.

Most of the recipes are pretty good and at least worth trying. It provided nutrition information and nice substitution suggestions for each recipe, along with a section on meatless meals. I have found that everything seems to overcook for me, though I am not sure if that is a crock pot problem or not, however most of the things I have made taste pretty good. Just be warned, NOTHING will come out looking as good as it does in the pictures, and there are beautiful pictures for each recipe in this book, but experience tells me that meats, especially poultry, just doesn't come out like they show, and neither do vegetables; that is just the nature of slow cooking.
All in all, a great beginner's book, good information at the beginning about crock pot cooking, but I am ready to move on.

Just Add Snow And A Crackling Fire.......2001-07-03
This is a marvelous cookbook/travel guide. It's gorgeous to look at, full of engaging descriptions and great color photos of both the retreats and their food. The information provided is well laid out. Broken down by state, each section features 20 top-notch winter retreats and a sample of their breakfast and dinner menus (recipes included in the book are marked with an asterisks). Finding a recipe is easy as the table of contents is broken down by recipe category and a "thorough" index is provided.
When I first glanced at the pictures showcasing many of the recipes, I was a tad intimidated. My style of cooking is casual while what I saw fell in the realm of chic plated fare. To my delight, Mrs. Walters and the retreat chefs have converted their goodies into achievable recipes for the home cook. Except for the rare use of an unusual ingredient like elk loin, the only other consideration is time. A few of the items, especially from the dinner menus, may take awhile to prepare. Caramelizing the onions for "Spicy Meatloaf with Caramelized Onions' takes an hour but the results are more than worth it. Use her suggestion and make them a day ahead to save time.
I had no trouble preparing any of the recipes I did try and the results were delectable. "Chocolate Volcano with Raspberry Coulis" looked complicated yet was easy to make and impressive. It was also scrumptious! "Roasted Rosemary Red Potatoes" are easy to make and addictive to eat. Flip them once during the baking time to get them good and crispy.
These are good fall/winter recipes that will get you through a day of skiing or snowshoeing.
Cook's Peak.......2001-07-03
The pressure is off. I've found the perfect gift for my sister-in-law on her upcoming birthday. An avid skier as well as a lover of fine food, my sis-in-law is sure to adore "The Cool Mountain Cookbook: A Gourmet Guide to Winter Retreats" by Gwen Ashley Walters.
When the book arrived, I leafed through its pages and found them as inviting as a down comforter on a snowy night. Detailed stories about the 20 featured ski lodges supplied me with miles of satisfying armchair travel. I knew that my sis-in-law had been to a few of the featured resorts and I imagined her reading the book, revisiting them like old friends. For those she hadn't yet experienced, Walters helpfully supplied addresses, as well as information about accommodations and activities.
Walters' evocative descriptions make the reader feel at home before he or she arrives. This passage about the Strater Hotel in Durango, CO made me feel as if I were a guest at this historic hostelry. "The rooms have diaries for guests to jot down their thoughts and experiences. Page after page tell of special moments remembered by couples, families and travelers. In another time, you might have spotted Bat Masterson polishing his six-shooter or Louis L'Amour penning a new western novel, as both were guests of the hotel."
Postcard pretty photographs of resorts transported me from the classic colonial Equinox in Vermont to the rustic chic of Deer Valley Resort in Utah. But it was the gorgeous color photographs of dishes such as Three Onion Tart, Chorizo and White Cheddar Breakfast Burrito, and Honey Soy-Glazed Chilean Sea Bass with Ginger Butter Sauce that sent me rushing off the slopes and into my kitchen.
First up, Orange Mustard Pork Tenderloin. Huge, huge hit with the family. I sometimes skip marinades to save time and this recipe proves what a big mistake that is. Soaked in a mixture of Dijon mustard, olive oil, garlic, orange juice, herbs, spices, and a few other goodies, this pork was absolutely succulent. A definite keeper recipe.
An oven-roasted Tomato and Avocado Soup sounded just right for the next sample (after all, I wanted to make sure my sis-in-law would like her gift). Just the aroma of the Roma tomatoes baking in the oven with fresh basil, fresh tarragon, and fresh parsley was worth making this dish.
Some overripe bananas dictated the next recipe choice. Banana Chocolate Chip Bread was a snap to whip together and bake in a loaf pan. Seasoned with a bit of orange zest, it was the pinnacle of yumminess.
I could tell from the glitch-proof recipes that Walters, a professional chef and Certified Culinary Professional, had worked hard to translate these chefs' creations into home-cook user friendly recipes.
At this point, "The Cool Mountain Cookbook: A Gourmet Guide to Winter Retreats" is becoming a bit creased and there are all those stickies marking recipes I still need to try. And, darn it, my sis-in-law's birthday is fast approching. If I give her the book, how will I find out for myself which chocolate dessert-the Warm Vahlrona Chocolate Tart, the Chocolate Volcano on page 132, or the Warm Chocolate Cake on page 140-is worthy of a serious chocoholic's attention?
I may just have to purchase another copy for her birthday gift--while I further explore the "The Cool Mountain Cookbook: A Gourmet Guide to Winter Retreats" for more tips on my favorite winter sport: dining on fabulous fare in front of a roaring fire.

I read in another review that the translation is a bit sluggish. Could be, I can't really judge that, being Dutch myself and living in the Netherlands.
The pictures in this book though are very inspiring! Great use of color, lighting and different materials. Very sleek style, with lots of room to breathe!

If you need reference help, try FH8 for Windows and Macintosh: Visual QuickStart Guide which is easier to use and has better detail and presentation, and is half the cost. This book does have nice cover design, though.
Deke makes it easy.......1999-10-14
I am impressed yet again with the comprehensive insight that the author has shown in this program. As a Freehand loyalist I'm amazed by the many features I never knew the program could do. These books are better than the manual because they are usually not on the same deadline as the software, resulting in fewer mistakes and he can mention competitors and comparisons to similar programs.

Complete Rehash of manual.......1999-10-05
This book is not worth the paper it is printed on. It is a rehash of the manual and nothing more. There is nothing in here you can't get out of the help in Freehand. This book is 'obviously' committee written, with Deke adding a little "twinkle in your eye' for good measure......soley for the purpose of exploiting the people who desire to develop thier skills in FH8. This book will not help you. There is no technique whatsoever covered in this book. Just a plodding, time-consuming once over of the physical (virtual?) tools within Freehand, sans context.

Deke has done it again. He gives excellent descriptions of every facet of FreeHand 8 - which even Illustrator users are starting to agree happens to be the best drawing program on the planet. He goes into great detail with his usual light-hearted manner that makes the book fun to read as well as informative. Newcomers and experienced FreeHand users will learn a lot from this Bible.

Having bought several of these Visual Quickstart books I can say that this one is very well organized and written. The index is excellent and will lead you where you want to go.
I am about to buy Photoshop 4 and Pagemill 2 and I wish that both were written by Sandee Cohen, although all the Visual Quickstart books are helpful.

If you're looking for a fast, friendly, and easy-to-understand way to learn Freehand 8.0, this Visual QuickStart Guide is it. Sandee Cohen walks you through the Freehand environment with grace and ease, showing not only simple methods of vector imaging, but some of the trickier aspects as well. This book is a must have for beginners and experts alike. As a graphic design application instructor, the VQSG helps me in developing curriculum for my students because I know it has the information I need. I especially like (as with the entire line of Visual QuickStart Guides) the large screen displays...they help the reader to see and understand the concepts Cohen describes. Get it or you might get lost!!!

Simply the best.......2002-08-10
Still the best FreeHand book on the market. Even though it would appear to be dated, as version 8.0 is now two version points behind (soon to be three in November 2002), Real World FreeHand 8 captures the software at what was an obvious peak; well-developed enough to stifle cries of quirkiness, the obvious superiority and power of this mighty software was free to emerge. FreeHand was The Daddy. Before the web, before it was bundled with Flash, before they changed the pen tool...but after they...the software really hasn't changed much since v.8, actually. Except for the pen tool, that is. (Kvern didn't offer a v.9 or a v.10 of his book.) Kvern is easily the best writer of third-party computer manuals EVER. An incredible knowledge of the software, it's history and utility with enough distance to be subjective and, at times, thorny, Kvern also speaks credibly though not obtrusively about his experience as a professional illustrator/designer. Definitely add writer to the list; Kvern makes his p.o.v. clear (he loves scripting! he encourages you to manually edit preference files!) and avoids the usual flat, obvious, dull attempts at humour that are killing this genre. It made me go back to FreeHand 8 while I wait to see whether the initials MX will prove to be a viable future for this once great and might app or RIP for FreeHand. While the recent developers of FreeHand have often seemed like dull, flat-footed, primitive, dull, unimaginative, erm, hopeless morons incapable of taking a right turn with the software, Kvern makes you believe in the possibilities. Don't miss his books on InDesign either!
The best book available.......1999-03-25
As an author in the process of writing a textbook on FreeHand for Delmar Publishing (due out in 10/99), I have to say that at the present time Olav's book is the only one given a positive review by any of my students.

FreeHand 8 Authorized is the next best thing to a class, offering a series of nine excellent lessons from Macromedia. Appropriate for both beginning and more accomplished users of the Windows and Macintosh versions of the software, the book takes you through each lesson using the practice files on the included CD-ROM, which also has trial versions of Macromedia FreeHand, xRes, Extreme 3D, Fontographer, and Flash 2. The lessons, which total at least 14 hours of study, include precise, well-illustrated instructions and offer the equivalent of a course at a Macromedia authorized training center.
First, the guide tours the FreeHand interface, showing you how to create basic shapes, apply fills and strokes, align and group shapes, and modify your view. The following chapters guide you as you combine text and graphics in an image, apply and edit color, manipulate paths and points, use layers and styles, and work with multiple-page documents. More advanced techniques teach you to apply transparency effects; use a 3-D image; and work with templates, composite paths, gradient fills, clipping paths, and Xtras. You learn how to blend shapes to create shading effects, and, in the final chapter, how to create Web images. In this last chapter, you work with Shockwave Flash, create GIF and JPEG images, and build Web pages using the insta.html Xtra.

After years of griping, my company migrated to Freehand8 from Designer 4. While I was happy to get some current software, I was frustrated trying to learn to use a program that was far more advanced than any I had used before. Simple tasks that I took for granted became completely alien to me. The manuals offered little help. I rolled the dice and bought this book. I'm glad I did, I learned all I needed to know to get started with this program. And I did it while working hands-on with real projects. Since the book came with a demo version, I was able to do it at home. It was far and away better than the lecture style classes I went to. It explained and demonstrated all the things beginners need to know, especially complex concepts like layers & bezier curves. Obviously, if you don't think those are complex concepts, the book is not for you. Those 700-1000 page books are fine if you already know a product, but are intimidating and frustrating to "newbies." At this price, this is a much better deal.
Outdated - not the authors fault.......1999-11-18
I made a typical mistake of most people buying computer related books; forgot to check the publish date. This book was probably great in 1997 but in 1999-2000 almost all of the software used as examples have been updated. The content seemed stable and the author quite knowledgeable. As a previous customer stated, it's probably better to just seek out literature that is relevant to the program being used than a book that tries to "cover it all".

As an author in the process of writing a new textbook on FreeHand for Delmar Publishing (due out in 10/99 called "Digital Drawing: Print & Web Graphics with FreeHand"), I have to say that Macromedia's offering is one of the large reasons I am writing the book. My students universally hate this book -- "dry"; "boring"; "confusing" are typical comments. The dry tutorial style, lockstep method, coupled with a lack of practical industry tips and techniques are usually the main reasons given.

This book is excellent choice for users who want to learn about FreeHand, this book is well organized and easy to follow. A person can learn it within a matter of days, it teaches you everything you need to know about FreeHand 8.0.

It's a crime this book is so little known even by admirers of Tennessee Williams. Although published by an academic publishers, it's a straightforward biography, deeply researched and printed on excellent paper stock with many rare photographs. Mr. Williams' sad personal decline and personal shortcomings are not ignored but this clear-eyed book also celebrates the genius that he was. This is one of the best written accounts on the greatest playwright America has ever produced.
