Book Description
In this shimmering work of imagination, one of Australia's most honored writers conjures a single still moment on the edge of the 20th century in which two unlikely people share a friendship. When Ashley Crowther returns to Australia to manage his father's property, he discovers a timeless landscape of kingfishers and ibises; he also meets Jim Saddler, the young woodsman who becomes Ashley's guide to his inheritance. Together they discard the differences of personality and class to enter a partnership of wonder. But when war breaks out in Europe, Jim and Ashley are drawn into obscene enterprise of the trenches, where death falls from the sky and burrows out of the earth. In telling the story of these men,
Fly Away Peter combines overwhelmingly sensual imagery with an unblinking consciousness of the worst that history can inflict to produce a novel of phosphorescent beauty.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
A novel about the horrors of running around on the battlefield during world war one, in the main. Unforunately, it is also a very dull example of the same.
The good thing then in that respect, is that it is also quite short so you don't have to put up with it for every long.
One of the few books that made me cry.......2002-06-14
Malouf deals with big themes here: the continuities of nature; the horror of human conflict; our desire to hold onto the past, and the necessity of relinquishing it. But he handles them in such a personal, beautiful and profoundly moving way that he manages to say it all in under 150 pages. Some readers might prefer more languorous pacing, but Malouf has no reason to stall. Unlike many writers, he knows precisely what he's doing. His precision is utterly astounding. He can say more, move you more, in a dozen pages than lesser writers seem to manage in whole careers. Chapter 14, scarcely more than 2000 words, is the most powerful account of the Great War - what it meant, what it can be made to mean - that I have ever read.
The simplicity of life and the complexity of war.......2001-06-03
David Malouf's prize winning novel, 'Fly Away Peter' is a beautifully written story that both beautifies and simplifies the life of humans and animals. Malouf has to be considered as one of Australia's leading writers and poets. This novel is not a story to be read if one is after light entertainment. It is truly the work of a poet, a fine piece of literature. His descriptive text beckons the reader to find a deeper meaning. The simple messages of love, friendship and the beauty of life are both refreshing and moving. Do not attempt to read it if you are after cheap thrills. This book needs to be savoured. It follows the lives of three main characters, Ashley, Jim and Imogen. Together they appreciate the joyous beauty of nature by studying and photographing a sanctuary owned by Ashley. However the terror of war rips the paradise apart and leaves the three friends seperated and questioning the meaning of life. Through different experiences, each character comes to a similar conclusion, that life is simple, beautiful and a gift to be enjoyed. It will go on over any hurdles. There are always survivors. An interesting read if you are having difficulties facing each day.
Mores Pages Or Less Material.......2001-02-02
I have read most of Mr. Malouf's novels and he is an Author of remarkable talent and consistency. It has generally not been whether a given work is good, just how very good it is. He almost competes with himself alone when he pens another work. This work, "Fly Away Peter", is closer to a novella in length, but felt a bit crowded when read. It would seem examining an issue in depth, or a general theme in breadth can be accomplished without a regard for length, rather just skill. This time out I felt there was room for two or three times the length of the actual work.
This book promises to deal with the issue of men from different classes of life, how they place the strata of society aside and become partners. And then to narrate how the First World War draws the two different men into its maw. These men are not the only characters, and it is not just their histories the Author must communicate. When all of these aspects are brought together in barely 134 pages, it became incomplete for me, almost claustrophobic. Mr. Malouf is a remarkable writer and poet. To read any of his work is to read great literature from this admired Australian Author.
The four stars may seem to contradict what I have said, however I cannot go back and change all of the previous books of his I have commented upon. This is excellent reading when placed next to much of what is available; it only comes up short when compared to the balance of his work. It certainly is worth the time to read and enjoy, it should probably be placed at the beginning of reading his body of work, rather than near its end.
From drinking tea to hallucinations in war..........2000-07-13
..Malouf's writing shines with nothing but a beautiful magic in his telling of human existence. Personally I prefered the first half of the book, with his slow but thoroughly engaging depictions of 3 people's shared happy laziness in the corner of an Australian lake. The war was also wonderfully drawn, but it carries all of its power in the contrast, and its emotional affect on the otherwise unaffected 'other side of the world'. No question it's Malouf's best.

Daniel Glynn is a quiet, responsible suburban father mourning the recent death of his wife. His brother Michael is a brilliant, hot-tempered Hollywood director. The only woman Michael ever loved left him--for Daniel. It's one of many secrets the brothers keep from each other, and from the world. But Daniel and Michael are rushing toward a strange reckoning. Unknown gunmen have shown up at their doors, claiming to be government agents and demanding that each brother find the other--or die. But both brothers are missing from the world they know, and the new universe they inhabit is a heavenly utopia--a utopia that everyone they meet wants to escape.
Patrick O'Leary's previous books are the novels Door Number Three and The Gift (a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 1997), and the collection Other Voices, Other Doors. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
There is a place-a world-where famine and poverty do not exist. Nor sickness, nor misery, nor unhappiness of any kind. Is it Heaven? As two brothers are about to discover, it's more like Hell. Hotshot director Michael Glynn and his brother Daniel, an English professor, have been waging a private civil war, an emotional feud of deceit and dark secrets buried but not forgotten. Daniel's beloved wife and son are caught in the fraternal crossfire. When violent strangers force the brothers to hunt for each other, they enter upon an odyssey of discovery more bizarre than either could have imagined. It is a journey to a world of perfect happiness, a world without death, a world where life can be relived and mistakes corrected. Both have been given a second chance. But is a second chance what they really need? For Michael and Daniel, the answer to that question will be found by unraveling the mystery of the impossible bird.

An Accidental Treasure of a Find!.......2006-04-20
This writer is a treasure. What a book! I stumbled upon it, purely by accident.
This work is not a frolic in an easy alternate reality, but disturbing and thoughtful and very original. It was hard to read before sleeping and affected my predream thoughts. Even my brain waves felt altered by the existential repatterning in this science fiction.
I never, never knew what would come next. I couldn't outguess him.
And, to my utter astonishment, he made me weep, scooped up the jewels of what is most precious in our lives and spoon fed them to us in his last poetic pages. I could feel my own heart beating in his hand.
A beautiful and profound story. Thank you and I bow deeply to Mr. Patrick O'Leary.
This is possibly the most profound author of poetic science fiction I have discovered in a long time and a rare compliment to my library. A book I will reread and pass thoughtfully into the hands of thinkers.
Disappointing.......2006-03-18
This book is good, save for one page toward the end. I won't comment much on it but I thought it was a little over played and could have been completely left out and the book would have been great. If not for that one page. Thats why i gave it three stars and i was tempted to give it two. I know that sounds weird but really its just one page that ruined the book for me. Overall the book was pretty good, it doesn't really slow down, something is always happening.
Disappointing compared to previous books by O'Leary.......2005-04-18
I bought The Impossible Bird based on my past experience with Patrick O'Leary, including his wonderful debut novel, Door Number Three, which I commented on here, and The Gift. O'Leary seemed to be some kind of cross between the wild ideas of Philip K. Dick with the literary sensibilities of Gene Wolfe, and in those two books the combination worked very well. And that's why the first 70 pages or so of the The Impossible Bird were such a surprise, and unfortunately, not a pleasant one, for it seemed to be all random violence in endless plot sequence without any textual beauty. I put the book down for weeks and only returned to it today because I had nominated for our monthly book club and the meeting was tonight.
Having now finished it, I still don't think it rises to the level of his previous books but I'm not as disappointed with it as I thought I'd be. I found the theme, that life is not worth living if there's no death to measure it by, to be interesting, if not necessarily something I would agree with, and there was some explanation for the rough violence of the beginning. But mainly I'm left with a sense that the novel suffers from the all too easy comparison to the movie, The Matrix, and while these themes and ideas were around long before that movie, it now looms large in the public consciousness.
The basic story, and I'm trying not to give anything away here, is of two very close brothers with a mysterious connection that goes beyond their familial relation and what happens after their deaths. This life-after-death plot is a lot like Jonathan Carroll's similarly flawed novel, White Apples, in that by removing the reader from the "known" world of reality, a loss of structure becomes very hard for the reader to grasp. It's as if there were no rules left for the writer to have to follow, nor for the reader to assume, and the result is a hazy world of dreams that quickly breaks down into a series of talking heads. O'Leary tries to spice this up with some "bullet-time" action (even going so far in one scene as to actually slow down the bullet so that a character can reach out and touch it), but without the framing world, it quickly becomes full of action and fury that ultimately means little to the overall story (in fact, the little logic of the world starts really breaking down when you start to question "why does it take these three things to escape the matrix, and why not others...").
The ending (and spoilers may be here) tries to resolve this, by working around to a reconciliation of the charaters to the main theme, but the gung-ho plot antics made me care much less for the characters when we got to that end. Like them, I was pretty much just ready for it to be over, which may have been what they were looking for, but isn't necessarily the emotion you wish to evoke from your readers.
Remarkable science fiction.......2005-03-04
I always brag that I know the end of a book within the first 20 pages -- because there is little that hasn't already been used as a plot device. I must say, I certainly did not see this one coming! I found this story very original and well written. Two brothers, close in childhood but distant as adults, suddenly find that teams of people are demanding information about their whereabouts, threatening death, kidnapping, etc. And those people don't seem to stay dead when killed. Also, we are given hints that something quit strange happened in South America to one of the brothers -- something involving a tribal chief, and maybe a hummingbird. OK, that is all I'll tell. Everything else, you have to get from the book. Read it! It's pretty good!
Good story, but fire the editor.......2003-08-18
O'Leary is a very thoughtful, inventive writer and I've enjoyed several of his books, but in this case the editor should really have kept a sharper eye for plot inconsistencies. In the chapter "The First Letter" (starts on p.92 of the hardcover edition), we learn of the character Michael's past affair with another man's wife--an affair which ended eight months before the birth of the married couple's son. But in the chapter "Please" (starts on p.189), Michael recalls "the first time he'd felt attracted to her"--which happens to be when her husband was tucking their son into bed! Such a plot glitch should never have been allowed to happen, especially when what we eventually learn about the characters' relationships with each other depends on the timetable of events. Shape up, editors. We still need your keen eye.

From the author: This paper explores the ramifications of encounters which two Abelam men and the author had in the Australian Museum and Taronga Zoo in Sydney, 1982. Rather than place a ready-made analytic framework on the men's experiences and rather than removing myself from the frame, as is usual in much anthropological analysis, I have chosen to explore the effects of these experiences on my own imagination. In the latter part of the paper I explore the way in which the imaginative entanglement of the Zoo and Museum experiences with my own memories has acted as a path of clues. This path has led to the development of the notion of sign which includes the idea of efficaciousness and transformation.

Essential knowledge for those who make beer at home.......2007-09-15
I bought this book as a stepping stone into the world of creating beer. Not only does this humorous and insightful tome offer advice on the essential equipment needed to brew beer, but does so in a way that is wonderfully organized and succinct. Mr. Papazian's book covers every aspect of beginning homebrewing and better homebrewing, as well as offering a glimpse of the more advanced world of creating your own wort from grain. The three main sections of this book are divided into skill and experience level, are very well organized and leave you with the feeling that anyone can make good beer. If you want to start brewing your own beer at home, buy this book and "How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time" by John Palmer. You won't be sorry you purchased these books.
Perfect for beginners to intermediate.......2007-09-03
This book was at my side when I started homebrewing and I strongly recommend it for beginners. I found that getting over the hurdle of brewing the first batch was the most intimidating thing, and brewing becomes much easier starting with you second batch. This book is excellent at walking a total newbie like I was through the process of the first batch. Plenty of detail, descriptions and steps laid out. The book also has a good catalog of different beer types from around the world, a handy guide to their ingredients, and then a long list of straitforward recipes that help you brew them. Pretty good hops list too. I've recommended this book to anyone I know who's getting started.
All brewers should have this book.......2007-08-23
This book is excellent in every regard. I have not been brewing long, but it has thus far been both a good introduction and a huge reference for all kinds of products and processes in brewing.
Very Informative.......2007-08-09
This was a wonderful purchase filled with lots of good information. I am a new homebrewer and really enjoyed learning more about it
A Great Place to Start.......2007-04-28
I've been homebrewing for a year now, and I have used this book extensively during that time. In fact, I still use this book. It is full of all sorts of helpful information and techniques. Also, it provides good background information. This can be used as a sort of manual for homebrewing but it can also simply be read; some of the stuff in the book is fascinating even if you're not ready to start brewing yet. This book can easily get you through your first couple years of homebrewing without the need for additional sources. For those of you who are jsut starting, best of luck!

Customer Reviews:
bland brick-like and tasteless.......2007-06-01
A co-worker of mine who tried 2 recipes and took them to a party of 20 people, came back with only one square missing from each pan. Everyone said "yuk". She gave me the book to keep. I thought that she was so sweet to "give" this book to me. I tried the Hawaiian Cake and some others. They were indeed "yuk". It's in my recycle trash can now. Someone wrote the apple pie makes it worth buying. You don't need a cookbook to make a delicious fruit pie. These are nearly no brainers, as the fruit adds the sweetness. I don't recommend buying this at all.
Where's the sweet?.......2007-02-13
Tried the apple almond cake. Came out like a giant bisquit and wasn't even close to being sweet, not even a hint. I had to add brown sugar to the icing so it would at least pretend to be a dessert.
Sorry but I just cannot recommend this one. I was really excited about it while reading it, too... I'm so disappointed.
Bland and Bad is more like it.......2006-02-19
I bought this cookbook a few years ago because a friend and I were trying to eat healthier. We made the peach cake and it was inedible, tasted like dog food with peaches. We were afraid to try much else. We started laughing about it over time and calling the author "Karen Barfie." One of the worst cookbooks I've ever used.
tried the cheescake--it was not good........2005-03-18
The cheesecake (I used a pear puree -- one of the purees that were recommended) came out rubbery and not sweet at all. I was so disappointed... This was so bad that I didn't want to risk trying anything else. I guess I'll keep looking for other sugar-free cookbooks.
Good Book.......2004-01-28
"A Reader" from 1998 is reviewing the wrong book. "Sweet and Sugar Free" by Karen E. Barkie, does not contain any recipes calling for date flour. The book "A Reader" is referring to is called "Cook With Me SUGAR FREE" by Sharon D. Gerstenzang. It is also available here at Amazon, and is an excellent book.
This book, "Sweet & Sugar Free" by Karen E. Barkie, is also an excellent book. The recipes are not as simple as your recipes calling for 2 eggs, 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of flour. When cooking with fruits and fruit juices, you need slighly different techniques to come up with a tasty finished product. That said, the techniques are explained in detail and after making a few of them, you really feel confident enough to try to alter some of your own recipes, to make them with fruit juices instead of sugar or honey.
Karen Barkie's recipes are reliable. The baked goods have a nice texture, a sweet flavor, and are family-friendly. After learning and experimenting with fruit-sweetened recipes and techniques, the recipes become quite easy. If you are avoiding artificial sweeteners or sugar, honey and other sweeteners that send your insulin soaring, these recipes will really hit the spot. They taste good, feel good in your mouth, satisfy the kids, and are relatively inexpensive easy to prepare.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-08-23
This book is great for sugar-free recipes. There are a TON to choose from....I have only made one so far (apple turnovers), and I am very excited to try more.
The recipes usually use healthier things like whole-wheat flour, which I really enjoyed. I also really like that after each recipe, the author tells you the calorie count and other nutritional information about the recipe (as well as diabetic exchanges).
The recipe that I tried tasted fantastic, and as I said, I am excited to try more. The book contains a very wide variety of recipes. I am a very picky person, but I found at least 15 that I plan to try at some point.

A Good Resource for Wheat Weavers.......2001-11-13
Along with a fascinating history of wheat weaving in ancient times, this book offers clear instructions and excellent photographs for a variety of projects. It also gives an estimate for the skill and time required for each project. If you are a Wheat Weaver or an aspiring weaver, this book is well worth adding to your library.

Beautiful photos! Complete, easy to follow directions........1998-02-12
This is the best book on straw weaving I've found so far. It includes photos and drawings of every technique. I have had no trouble following any of the instructions. Each project contains a short piece of folklore that pertains to the piece. The pictures are so beautiful, it also makes a good coffee table book.

Book Description
This is the long-awaited first book-form result of the author's pioneering interdisciplinary research on a key problem for understanding Chinese texts, and, therewith, China: its ways of expression of emotions and states of mind.
Relying on his immense database on (mostly) Ming and Qing sources, the author here presents the first truly solid, source-based survey on the subject.
After analysing the methodological problems involved, the volume focuses on contradictions between official values on the one hand, and practical compromises between individual appetitive energies and personal tendencies for wealth and gratification of desires on the other hand. It analyses the negotiating process between the rigid ethical codes and dynamic social changes, as well as how social control influences the cognitive elements of emotions, both in restraining personal passions and promoting the "virtuous sentiments".
