Book Description
Travel is no longer a luxury and not always an entertainment. Many journeys need to be made‹to get home or away from an enemy, to work, to find a last resting place, or because someone has told you to go. This issue of Granta is about such journeys; you might call it necessary travel writing, with Decca Aitkenhead: looking for cheap sex and drugs; Manuel Bauer: a child¹s escape over the Himalayas; Isabel Hilton: what have they done to Beijing?; Ian Jack: the train crash that stopped Britain; Ryszrd Kapuscinski: in the forests of Cameroon; Ian McEwan: on the retreat to Dunkirk, 1940; John Ryle: the last Emperor makes his last journey; Dayanita Singh: inside a sanctuary for girls in Benares; Simon Winchester: how Britain and the US made a people homeless; plus the untold story of how the FBI pursued James Baldwin at home, revealed by James Campbell. Granta is the paperback magazine of new writing. Every issue features the best new fiction, reportage, memoir and photography, generally collected under a theme.
Book Description
Award-winning author Catherine Asaro, creator of The Skolian Empire, creates her first full-length fantasy novel in a world rich with magic and power. Fans who caught a glimpse of the kingdom of Aronsdale in "Moonglow" from the Charmed Destinies collection are delighted with the result!
What was the use of being a powerful mage if you couldn't learn the spells?
Once Chime had been the most promising mage in the land, feted and celebrated for her potential and future role in the kingdom. The Iris, he young competitor, made a stunning leap in skill and turned Chime's world upside down.
Now no longer the most powerful, no longer promised to a prince -- and still unable to harness her magic properly -- Chime was set adrift. As was the new king's cousin -- and former heir -- Lord Muller. Yet when the neighboring kingdom threatened war, Muller and Chime were tasked with uncovering the plot. Both were flawed, yet unwilling to accept a lesser destiny than they had once known. Could this quest be the opportunity for redemption -- or would it lead them to their deaths?

My first book by Asaro and Not my Last.......2007-09-26
Every once in awhile I get an urge to read a fantasy story, so on a whim I picked this book up while I was waiting on a flight out of Pittsburg. The Charmed Sphere was my first book by Chatherine Asaro so I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading the book. Well, I wasn't disappointed and I thought it was one of the best fantasy books I have read. The location of the story is old medieval Europe and the author's writing style on magic was a surprise and different from other authors. Her descriptions were excellent and the story moved along at an even, smooth pace. Not only was there magic, but a bit of romance that made the story realistic and warm at the same time. If you enjoy a story of magic, romance and some dark suspense, then this is the book for you.
Chanted.......2007-09-16
This was the first book of Ms. Asaro's that I'd read or had ever even seen. And chances are if I had found it on the shelf at the bookstore I probably wouldn't have picked it up. But it was the "Book of the Month" for the bookclub that I was once part of (Luna) and it only seemed right to read it after paying $[...] for it. I was pleasantly surprised after finishing it and have enjoyed several of her books since (all sent to me through the same book club). But this one to date has been my favorite.
I once had the opportunity to chat with Ms. Asaro at [...] and was pleased to find out that she is a very pleasant person (at least her online personna). I think that you should know that this has also laid sway on my review.
Absolutely great book! I read it over and over again........2007-06-09
Great book from start to finish. I was first introduced to Catherine Asaro when I read "Moonglow" and I have not been disappointed. I love the geometry-based magic and the colours it incorporates. I was looking forward to seeing Jarid and Iris in more detail in this book but I was well satisfied with the development of Chime and Muller. I highly recommend this book. I don't know what others are talking about when they give less 4 stars reviews but if you want a great read that keeps you coming back, this is the book for you!
Interesting Premise.......2007-03-02
This book caught my eye because of the usual premise behind it - that the main characters *aren't* the most talented, long-awaited, best mages/swordsmen/heros ever - instead they find they are easily replaced by others who are greater than they are. Intrigued, I wondered, "so, what happens when your protagonists are second best?"
In attempting to step away from the standard fantasy convention, Asaro's story does stand out as different, but I also found myself slightly confused at times, waiting for the twist, waiting for their more powerful "secret" abilities to be revealed, or wondering if the "real" protagonists weren't who I thought they were at all. At first I expected the characters whose glory replaced Chime's and Muller's to be evil, or at least dastardly in some way, and so I was surprised when they turned out so sympathetic and likable. In many ways Jared and Iris are more interesting characters, and Jared especially steals the show when he is in a scene. Chime I actually found to be mildly annoying at times, her social awkwardness becoming irritating rather than endearing. Muller is a well-fleshed out character though, with a unique personality and an interesting dilemma. His eventual fate often drew me in more than Chime's.
Asaro writes well and has a funny way of making things interesting, even when there isn't a whole lot of action actually going on. I kept waiting for the "big quest," that most protagonists eventually embark on, or for Chime or Muller's mage abilities to finally take off, and so I was surprised when hundreds of pages went by and neither of them seemed to be making any progress, physical or magical. However, I still felt "hooked" and continued turning pages with anticipation, wondering what would happen to our four main characters. Asaro's writing is just that good.
Does Asaro stay true to her premise? I can give her credit for that by saying "yes." There is no twist where suddenly our two protagonists burst forth with miraculous power, surpassing everyone around them. They really *aren't* the most gifted mages in this land. However, Asaro does manage to give them each something unique to offer so that their roles have meaning.
One thing that was never explained and which I found kind of odd was the author's choice of character names. Most everyone is Chime's family has a name associated with music (chime, bell, drummer), yet this doesn't seem to factor into the story in any way.
Overall, I'd say this is an enjoyable book, and unusual enough that it's worth checking out. In many ways, readers should be able to relate to the main protagonists' feelings of what it's like to be overshadowed by another with greater talent or ability than you. And if that's not enough, read it for the character of Jared, whose story and transformation makes for some suspenseful, emotional, and fascinating reading.
Absolutely beautiful.......2006-05-23
I have never read Asaro's work before but after reading this delightful book, she is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The true attraction about this book was the interplay of language between Iris and her lover, the lost Prince. It isn't the deep cold realities of George R. R. Matin's Clash of Kings, but still an immensely enjoyable book for a frivolous past time. I highly recommend it to readers who are looking for a warm hearted romantic story set in a magical world where good and evil are too well defined so your loyalties will not lie elsewhere. Misted Cliff's is the sequel following the second generation and also highly recommended.
Book Description
A string of smashing victories by the forces of the sinister aliens known as the Yuuzhan Vong has left New Republic resources and morale stretched to the breaking point. Leia Organa Solo, estranged from her husband, Han, oversees the evacuation of refugees on planets in the path of the merciless invaders. Luke Skywalker struggles to hold the fractious Jedi Knights together, even while one of them undertakes a bold but reckless undercover mission.
Manipulating their alliance with the amoral Hutts, the Yuuzhan Vong leave a cunning trail of vital information where New Republic agents are sure to find it--information the desperate defenders cannot afford to ignore: the location of the aliens' next target.
Then Han Solo stumbles into the dark heart of raging battle, thus beginning a furious race against time that will require every skill and trick in his arsenal to win...
Customer Reviews:
3.5 stars - At least it puts Han Solo back in play.......2007-09-08
I'm not really sure why this book, which is the 5th volume in the massive New Jedi Order series and the closing volume of James Luceno's Agents of Chaos duology, was titled Jedi Eclipse, when the Jedi play such a minor role in this one. Even though another Jedi Knight dies in this book, the real star of this "series within a series" is Han Solo. Everyone else is just along for the ride.
While the Yuuzhan Vong invasion was still the focal point of the story, this book felt like one of the pre-NJO Star Wars novels where the characters go their separate ways only to have their adventures bring them all back together for a dramatic action sequence at the end of the book. Han spends much of the story helping his new partner Droma track down his missing kin, Leia travels to Hapes to elist the Consortium's aid in the conflict, and Jacen and Anakin Solo travel to the reactivated Centerpoint Station. In the end, all points lead to (I'm not saying where, as it is a major plot point).
I found it more than a little disturbing when I went back and reread these New Jedi Order novels in a post-9/11 world, as there are definite parallels between the Yuuzhan Vong's ideology and the fundamentalist Islam that has been the source of so much misery. The matter of refugees also brings to mind post-Katrina New Orleans; only in these novels the enemy actively torments the refugees.
Luceno definitely has an appreciation for the Star Wars characters, and seems quite knowledgeable about the vast Star Wars history. He also knows how to write a rollicking adventure story, which despite the grim overtones of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Jedi Eclipse certainly was. I still prefer the NJO novels that focus on the larger conflict, but the Agents of Chaos series was an enjoyable side-story, and were particularly useful in that they pushed Han Solo back into action, which is not going to be good news for the Yuuzhan Vong!
Not much here unfortunately...........just filler........2006-11-27
Well, im back again. Sorry to keep ya waiting a bit longer than usual. I do however have an explanation. It is because this installment simply doesnt go anywhere. The pay off appears in the last 48 pages and that simply is not acceptable to me. There is no buildup, no suspense at all. I had a hard time wanting to continue the book. It sat on the shelf for days on end wanting to be read to the finish line but alas.................... Hero's trial was fantastic. It had everything in it for me. All the ingredients were there. This one should go further since it is part 2 of the duology but it just doesnt. Ive enjoyed the last 4 books quite a bit, but this one is the worst of them so far in terms of keeping the interest goin. It is definitely NOT a page turner. It is however written very well. The characters are all represented well, with the exception of a few, like Luke and Mara who barely see any page time. The characterizations though are dead on good. The book also appeared rather fragmented with too much going on, too many subplots that were confusing to follow at all times. Of course read it, its Star Wars, but its overshadowed greatly by those that came before it.
#5.......2006-03-14
ive only read this far so far but will put out reviews as i read the rest of the series.this was an excellent book as was its [predecessor agents of chaos 1.mara may have found a cure to her ailment.but is it permanant?han goes back to his old scoundral like days.he still has his good side as he does great things for the war effort but in his own time hes become quire reckless.leia gets the blame for a lot of bs stuff going on in the world.she even has ppl fighting over her at one point.one of her old would be suitors no less.anakan gets a weopon of mass destruction working again but will he use it?the ever oppurtunistic lando even starts bringing in refugees.the republic tries to be friends with rhe hutts also.all trust seems to dissipate everywhere!even c3-p0 begins worrying about deactivation like an old person would dying.the vong make prisoners massage thier living ships heart so itll run better.the being turns a lot of ppl into veggies or corpses.however a jedi resists its tortures.the vong killed enough stuff now that the core worlds like where corascant is were looking like good targets.like i said,as i read more, ill report more.the 2nd best book so far!
Filler, and Little more.......2005-09-18
While I have been a big fan of the New Jedi Order, I can't say this book is included. Much of this book is filler, with little happening that is actually relevant to the rest of the series.
The book itself is not poorly written. Lucena does a good job getting his points across, but sadly there are few points to be made. What exciting parts there are are short, so action is not the main focus at all.
The characters themselves are not very interresting in nature, Roa, who was the main focus of Han's journey, now takes a back seat and is almost inconsequential to the plot anymore. I'm not sure that Han even remembered he was looking for Roa. The Ryn Droma, who I liked at first, has now become pretty lame and repetitive, never changing his reactions.
If I were to go back and read through the series again, I would honestly skip this book. I couldn't get into this book at any point, and honestly believe that Lucena should have made Agents of Chaos I longer and finish the story, rather then creating the second novel.
Book Jumps To Much.......2005-06-29
This was an ok book. I did not care for how it skipped around all the time from character to character point of view. It could be better if it was more uniform and flowed together more.

Shedding light on a favorite subject..........2007-03-08
For anyone who is a beginner or a serious collector of deco lighting, this book is a must. The pictures are beautiful. I have purchased several old lamps for restoration. I now have a better idea of how the finish might have looked as well as the appropriate shade. Well worth the dollars spent. You might be surprised to find out just how much Aunt Lucy's old spelter lamp goes for on the antique circuit.
A Fabulous & Much-Needed Reference For Deco Fans.......2004-08-10
For years I've wished there were a good, richly illustrated reference book on Deco lamps. Usually, I had to content myself with just a single chapter in other books on Deco. Finally, there's this book! Marvelous photos on every page. I suspect some of the estimated values are a bit high, but perhaps, in time, the rest of the market will catch up to them. Regardless, anyone interested in Deco lighting needs this one on their shelves.

Good introduction to decorating with fabrics.......2000-04-13
This book is good for people who are new to decorating and like fabric craft ideas for the home. It actually contains more information than I expected from the description (it is only 72 pages). The pictures are generally good and helpful. One thing I must say though is that on the pictures illustrating machine sewing the fabric and thread are ofthen similar color and it is very hard if not impossible to figure out where the seams are. Other than that, I think it has enough information to get you started. The price is right too.
However, if you know the basics and are interested in more involved and elaborate projects you might want to choose a title that goes into more detail.

Book Description
In this gripping continuation of his classic memoirThe Last BarrierReshad Feild tells a haunting and powerful story of his search for love and knowledge. This master storyteller takes us farther on his journey toward truth, from an encounter with a shaman in Mexico to a visit with a wise old man in the Welsh countryside. Reshad weaves into the tale of this odyssey profound reflections on love and death and the invisible web that underlies earthly reality. He also gives us glimpses of love and sex as the ultimate fulfillment of human aspiration.
A story of death, romance, and illumination, The Invisible Way combines a fascinating tale with timeless spiritual wisdom.
