The story of the author and his wife's two-month safari in East Africa in the 1950s. Ruark's philosophies are intertwined in the hunting stories to make unforgettable reading.

Horn of the Hunter.......2007-03-09
I loved his stories of Africa! The book took me back to a better time when being on safari meant you could be killed by very dangerous animals or reptiles but humans were not quite as high up the list in the danger catalogue.
Bridging the gap between Hemingway and Capstick we had Ruark........2007-01-01
"Horn Of The Hunter" is one of the best stories about African hunting and wildlife that has ever been penned. (My Opinion) Robert Ruark may have written between the two era's of Hemingway and Capstick, but when it comes to writing about Africa he took a backseat to neither of them and if you have read my other reviews you know that I have nothing but praise for them both.
Ruark takes us on safari with him and his wife Virginia. The copyright is 1952 and though I couldn't find a definite time for the safari it was during the post WW II era. It is reasonable to assume that it would have been a short time prior to the copyright. He describes in great detail the African wilderness and wildlife along with the discomforts of insect bites and muddy river bottoms. Traveling through the Tanganyika wilderness in a Land Rover called Jessica with a professional hunter named Harry Selby, Ruark takes us with him on a grand adventure.
Unlike many prominent writers Ruark not only tells of his successes, but his failures as well. Throughout the text Selby compares Ruark's marksmanship with a lady client named Harriet Maytag and Ruark's responses to his comments add depth and humor to the text. There are some spectacular long range shots taken, but there are also some clean misses at both long and short range. He admits his fear of Cape Buffalo and tells us of his love for wing shooting. He talks of Selby who is as sqeamish with snakes as a teenage girl, but is the living portrait of abosolute courage when following up wounded and dangerous animals.
Ruark's delightful humor is on nearly every page as he describes various bits of unorthodox lore. Such as painting a juvinile baboon with flourescent paint to frighten off the band or Selby's advice to him to survive a buffalo stampede by shooting one of them and climbing on top of it to avoid being trampled.
When I finished reading this story I was as sad to see it end as Ruark was to leave Africa.
All in all this is a readers delight and will be a treasured gem in any hunters library.
A SAFARI STORY WITH SOME ASTUTE OBSERVATIONS.......2005-10-17
This book is the rousing and interesting story of writer Robert Ruark's two month Safari into the wilds of Africa. This was done in the 1950's and he was accompanied by his wife who also hunted by his side. Gritty and often frightening descriptions of the chase and the kill are acompanied by astute observations on the Africa of that time. He had strong opinions of many of the African tribes. Some he praised highly and others he condemned and he explains why. If you are wrapped in the fog of political correctness don't bother to read this. If you want an unvarnished, honest, very interesting tale, by all means, buy this outstanding book.
from another bwana.......2004-01-08
you know how they say''anticipation is sweeter than the possession'' thats what happened with me.Before buying this book I'have read the other reviwes, with no disrespect to other readers, but I think they have over done it a little.I am a long time big game hunter, what I found what is missing in this book is a thru heart of an hunter. The horn was there, but not the hunter. After reading the book, I remember more of the memsaabs hair care than the hunting adventures.I felt ,for Mr Ruark the shooting part of the safari was the most booring bit.Well that is his styl and I respect him
I just wanted to share my thoughts with rest of my bwana brothers.Still a good reading.Especially to know the great character of Mr. Selby.
BEST BOOK About an African Hunting Safari.......2003-10-17
This is by far and away the BEST book I've ever read about a hunting safari in Africa. Ruark and his writing are in a class by himself. ALL the other books about him like Use Enough Gun were published after his untimely death. NONE of them compare. They are collections of articles and/or very short stories (some fiction) that collectively don't hold a candle to Horn of the Hunter. His writing makes you feel like you are beside him sharing his experiences. You will not regret buying this book. Simply the best!!

The great American novel.......2006-04-20
If you've never read Harriette Arnow, or only know her through The Dollmaker, you'll be shocked at how stunning this novel is. Beautiful written, with some of the most complex and moving characters in literature.
The Great American Novel of the 20th Century!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-03-26
Set in rural Kentucky around WWII, this book is so good, it should replace Huckelberry Finn as "the great american novel". It is a shame that it isn't better known, but unfortunately Arnow-Simpson is thought of as a regional writer. This is a very deep book, but it also has some very funny parts. Her description of pre-consumerism country life is very detailed and insightful. She saw how the world was changing, and captured a piece of it that is now long gone. I'm not even an hunting type, and I wanted to go out and get a couple of hounds after reading this. Better even than The Dollmaker, and not half as sad. Highly Recommended!
Strong characters and detailed descriptions of Ky people.......1998-03-09
This book captures the spirit, character, and complexities of the mountain people of eastern Kentucky better than any other I have read. The individuals are simple, strong-willed, and proud like many of the people I grew up with. The descriptions of the landscape are detailed, accurate, and compelling as I remember them. For anyone interested in a better understanding of the depth of human character explained in a very readable way, this is a terrific book

Customer Reviews:
Timing is terrible.......2002-02-23
I read all the books in this series. Although the plot is good, and the world is interesting, there were several things that made me really consider stop reading.
First is passing of time is terribly unrealistic. A trip which was taking 2 weeks on foot in the first book cannot take 3 days in the second book. A trip that a brutox takes in a few months is returned in one month or so, etc. There were so many examples of such trip-length inconsistencies that I had to keep forcing myself to overlook these and enjoy the rest of the book.
Fragmentation of parallel events thorughout the books could not be any worse. They are always ending too quickly and the book jumps to the next so your enjoyment of the current event is kept too short. I think the author should look at Dragonlance classics series to see examples of how this should have been done. Also, those events do not occur in a proper time order. When you start reading the next section which writes about some other hero group, you sometimes understand current time should be before the previous section, or timing is much much more unrealistic than you've previously thought (even cases such as a few months trip taken in moments). These are very amateurish in my idea and had a quite bad impact of my enjoyment of the book. Actually I'm pretty surprised how other people rated this book so high.
An end to a long battle.......2000-07-27
This book concludes the Watershed trilogy and it has a surprise ending. The end of this trilogy left me wanted more explained and more adventure. I will definately read more books if they ever come out about this so called Watershed and it inhabitants.
This book is the best of anything I have read ever!!!.......1999-01-31
After reading the final book in another one of Douglas Niles' flawless trilogy, I felt myself wanting more, but also completely satisfied. The story was awesome, and I really wished I could have partook in the whole thing personally. Douglas Niles has made a story with so much emotion behind it, I really got into it and read the final book to this wonderful trilogy in just two days. I suggest anyone who likes DragonLance, or Forgotten Realms, or any fantasy work read this book. Once again, a flawless job on the part of my favorite author.
Finaly, Something to read !!!.......1998-10-16
To end a wonderful trilogy, Douglas niles wrote a magnificent book which kept me from just about doing anything until i finished it. If you didn't read any of this triolgy yet, Go out and buy it now. In israel this book costs $10 and worth them too.
Another fine piece of work by Douglas Niles........1998-06-14
I just finished reading War of Three Waters and let me tell you it is well worht the read. Niles builds such a fine and believable realm it is really a shame to see it come to and end. I read this series with mixed feelings. I wanted to hurry to see what happend next, but at the same time I didn't want it to end. Another fine piece of work from Doulas Niles, and I hope we get to return to the Watershed again.

The Dream of the Green Country.......2004-02-23
Aestival Tide is a brilliant trip into an exotic future. The language is beautiful, the author uses her knowledge of religion and culture to its full extent, and a very subtle sense of humour runs throughout. If you enjoy spectacle, intricate ceremony, some deliberately over-the-top flourishes, and lyrical writing, this is the ticket. When you read this book, you will know the significance of the Green Country.
ELIZABETH HAND DOES IT AGAIN!.......2001-12-05
Elizabeth Hand has done it again! She has created a profoundly disturbing, beautifully written masterpeice. Like it's predecessor WINTERLONG Ms. hand has taken what could have been nothing more than a dime store sci-fi novel and turned into a rich, well crafted, stunningly beautiful epic. This isn't so much a science fiction novel as it is a sweeping tale filled with deeply felt characters and lush prose. I would reccomend this book to anyone.
Winterlong 2 it is not........2000-04-21
If you are looking for a sequel to Winterlong, you will be dissapointed. This book is more like a companion, but it is beautiful in its own right. Sheds more light on the world that Winterlong gave so many tantalizing little hints about, while at the same time, almost seeming to create another world within that one.
It's a far out comparison, but some of Hand's sci-fi images and concepts remind me of Cordwainer Smith (if you don't know him you should!)
A beautiful, startling book.......2000-03-26
Elizabeth Hand's immaculate use of the English language to portray a world in disharmony and upheaval is as beautiful as it is disturbing. This book will haunt you years after you read it. Highly recommended.
A sensual, alien and real book by an awsome writer........1999-08-05
Aestival Tide brought together all of the things I appreciate most about Elizabeth Hand. Her telling of how relationships would be if sex were no longer important, how the world would be if no one saw the sky, how a man would live if he were no longer a man, how a machine could express humanity, all without being cartoonish or over the top. She creates a world that exists, with flaws and history, yet nothing for most people within to belive in, because they lack the ability to care no matter how hard they try.
Book Description
This classic work by Reshad Feild, one of today's best-known Sufi teachers in the West, tells the compelling story of his journey into an ancient and powerful spiritual path. Starting as a London antique dealer, Feild comes into contact with the enigmatic Hamid, a Sufi teacher who leads him into a world of mystery, knowledge, and limitless love. On his journey, which takes him to the mystical sites of Turkey, Feild is forced to confront his own inner weaknesses and falsehoods. Hamid and the events of his search take him again and again into confrontation with the limits of his own being, enabling him to shed the false conditioning that lies between himself and his true nature. This hard-to-put-down adventure is a travelogue in more ways than one. It tells of Feild's exhilarating explorations into mystical Turkey, a land of whirling dervishes and the tombs of great saints, but also a world that opens into the divine love that lies at the heart of all. This twenty-fifth anniversary edition features a new foreword by Coleman Barks, the foremost modern interpreter of the Sufi poet Rumi, and a new preface by the author.

Extraordinary Conversations.......2002-07-04
Finding this book in print is like finding an insider's multi-million dollar stock tip in the pages of the Wall Street Journal, or an original Rembrandt etching at a yard sale. Such things aren't supposed to happen. But when they do, the finder is perversely negligent not to take advantage of them.
We all know that the way to learn an art or a skill is to apprentice to a master, and this is truest of all in the case of the ultimate art - the art of becoming fully human, becoming what Jesus and St. Paul called "perfect", "completed". However, though it's easy to find a fine surgeon or an expert carpenter, it's not so easy to locate a reliable teacher in the realm of the spirit. The field is full of frauds since so few of us are equipped to judge true quality. And instruction in this art is usually private and secret, for good and sufficient reasons. The fate of those who go public can be unhappy.
Here is the autobiographical record of a young British pop musician who went east on a spiritual journey. So far not unusual. He found a capable teacher who was not a fraud and was willling to talk: less usual. And he took notes! He took copious notes, and put the record of his experiential learning into a book, and this book is available on the internet.
Only in these strange times, when, as Jesus said, there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing whispered in a private room that will not be shouted from the rooftops, could such a thing be possible.
Thank goodness that Reshad went looking, that Bulent was willing to teach, that Reshad took notes, and that Lindisfarne Press has brought the book out again. It contains instructions for learning to live, a skill most of us are still beginners at.

another Kafka-esque CB hailed by compote-triots.......2005-03-27
The key to great entertaining is taking nothing for granted the approach demonstrated by master chef Barbara Kafka as she reveals every aspect of fine dining. This award-winning chef, hostess, and author for Vogue & TheNYTimes also divulges another important ingredient in great entertaining: improvisation. Whether you plan an event months in advance or get a sudden phone call from unexpected guests, FOOD FOR FRIENDS will help you serve delicious meals in the most appetizing arrangement and require little time and effort.
This classic book features how-to hints for elegant, yet simple, dining. Complete with charming illustrations that guide and delight, FOOD FOR FRIENDS offers invaluable insight into the preparation of foods, as well as the dining area itself. It opens with a section on planning a meal, choosing which recipes to use, and setting the table.
Each of the book's 200 recipes is introduced with a brief description of techniques and tips to make cooking easy and serving sophisticated. The recipes are arranged in sections based on the ideal times and situations for serving each dish, including:
First Courses
Pasta
Soups Fish and Seafood
Roast Meats
Various Birds
More Main Courses
Desserts
A final section offers otes on Ingredients and Equipment. The Ingredients section contains helpful advice on using basic flavorings, such as kosher salt, pepper, garlic, lemon juice, butter and cream, herbs, vinegars and oils, wine and liquor. The EquipÂment section offers insight on which type of cooking tools to use and why.
From start to finish, FOOD FOR FRIENDS will have everyone you know raving about your skills as a chef and host.
With much cooking advice & how-to available now on the Internet and various TV-and-cable stations/networks, I find printed references, esp. classics like this, even more valuable as a ready resource for a recipe or in the kitchen when the others have long faded into mezzo-tinted vague memories of "he said/she said, do something or other next ...' I dis-remember eggs-actly!
Time will tell, but this stands out now 20+years past as a timeless classic.

A real must.......2000-03-03
A mind-boggling array of beautiful and outlandish objects from the 1950s explained, illustrated and priced, with a real sense of perspective and a light-hearted approach. Every page has something to make the collector gasp, and it's not all just the usual 50s Americana -- there's a strong emphasis on stuff from the UK and Europe, including some glorious textiles and enough emphemera to thrill the most jaded collector. A much-needed guide to a still under-explored era of collectables. A real must for anyone with even the remotest interest in understanding both the era and the origins of the objects that help make it seem so glamorous today.
Kitsch-n-Synch.......1999-01-15
This is an **excellent** resource book! It's not only chock full o' cool color pictures, it has lots of really informative text--a rare combination. Covers furniture (Herman Miller/Saarenen etc), spacey fabric designs, silly kitsch, dishware, lamps, 50s clothing and much, much more. Most books of this sort are either text-heavy, or merely picture books. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in collecting vintage stuff of this period!
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Unlikely combinations.......2000-07-28
My sister-in-law sent me this book because I tend to get excited about cooking and textiles and share freely of the results of my labors with both. I also am fascinated by unlikely combinations, which end up making lots of sense. This book is a joyous combination of food, fiber and creativity. It starts your juices flowing with new ideas about art, kitchens and how infusing the day-to-day aspects of our lives with self discovery and artistic innovation can recharge and inspire. The photographs of the collaborative quilts are enough to send you on a restaurant tour or a trip to the nearest fabric store. But, the writing that accompanies the quilts and explains the nature of collaboration between fabric artist and chef, makes you want to start over in life as a struggling artist and create something enlightening with the raw materials in your kitchen or even your rag bag. What a lovely effort that inspires more deeply because it is accomplished for the purpose of helping young women find their place in the world. Kudos to Girls Incorporated and the women who shared of their labors.

"COLOR is literally the 'wavelength' medicine of the future. It calls to us and asks us to recognize its value as an alternative medicine that the environment can provide." —from The Power of Color
THE FIRST PRACTICAL GUIDE TO CREATING HEALTHY INTERIORS WITH COLOR
Working from the scientifically based premise that the use of full-spectrum color on finishes and surfaces is essential to creating a healthy man-made environment, Sara O. Marberry and Laurie Zagon arm design professionals with:
- A complete methodology and clear, easy-to-follow guidelines to designing with full-spectrum color without compromising style or client preferences
- A concise refresher course in color theory
- Detailed analyses of more than 20 projects for a wide range of public and private spaces, including healthcare facilities, schools, day-care centers, hotels, and offices
- Color charts that break down proportions of hue, value, and chroma for each project discussed
- A project showcase featuring more than 40 full-color photographs, bringing vividly to life all of the examples discussed
Thanks to the efforts of a handful of visionaries working in a variety of disciplines, our knowledge of the role of light and color in human health has taken a quantum leap during the past decade. For instance, clear links have been established between color and academic performance among grade-schoolers, and medical journals now routinely feature reports of color being used successfully to assist in the treatment of everything from depression to AIDS.
Now, in a book that is as inspiring as it is instructive, design professionals can learn how to use color to create interior spaces that support the health and well-being of all who live and work in them. The first and only practical guide to creating healthy interior design using color, The Power of Color provides a simple methodology and set of guidelines that can easily be integrated into professional practice.
The book begins with a concise, accessible refresher course in color theory. From there, the authors embark on a fascinating exploration of the healing properties of color as documented in the scientific literature. This is followed by in-depth, practical discussions of surface colors and lighting, the importance of using full-spectrum color in interior design, and techniques for using full-spectrum color without compromising the design professional's unique sense of style or the demands of his or her clients.
The remainder of The Power of Color is devoted to the detailed analyses of more than 20 projects executed in the United States and Europe. Chosen for their use of a full-spectrum color palette, the examples include designs for many different types of public and private spaces—from healthcare facilities and schools to hotels and offices. Each project is accompanied by color charts that break down proportions of hue, value, and chroma. A project showcase containing more than 40 full-color photographs vividly brings to life all of the examples discussed.
The most complete, practical guide to the use of color to create healthy interior spaces, The Power of Color is an indispensable resource for interior designers, architects, and all other design professionals.

The Power of a Large Publisher...to charge high prices.......2001-05-23
I can't believe I paid $.. for this book! The color photos and appendix essay by Jain Malkin are definitely worthwhile, but the authors' text is an incoherent smattering of classic color theory, new age energy theory, and unreferenced, out-of-context statements such as: (yellow) "is the one color most associated with the yellowing or aging of the skin" (p 21). Hello?? The bibliography and references are hit-or-miss, so it is not even a good source of published literature.
A good subject, but not good value........2000-06-13
It would have made a good magazine article, but for that price it should have had more content. I agree with the premise, but they made one point and filled with an appendix, references and lots of double spacing. The Donald Kaufman books are better for information on decoration. And Frank Mahnke's Color, Environment, and Human Response is better for information on color.

Customer Reviews:
Swimming In Trees: A Story of Soul.......2001-03-01
Swimming In Trees: A Story of Soul, by Maria Stokes Katzenbach, is not an easy book. It is intriguing--once started, it can't be put aside to finish later. It is powerful, and mind-changing. It is compelling, and unique. But it is not easy.
Katzenbach says "my book is about overcoming my fear of madness." She adds that "I probably had to become crazy, in some way, and survive it before I could overcome that fear."
She turned her spiritual journey into a story in order to heal herself and embrace all that she is, including the goddess within. Through storytelling she found "my soul--my murdered soul. Alive." She learns the eternal truth of birth, death, rebirth.
Set in the Hudson Valley of New York state, much of the story occurs at the local Y, a place that is both a sanctuary and an asylum for women. Katzenbach's story is filled with unforgettable characters, like Manda, who has been running for 27,000 years, Rulla, the "Queen of the Y," and Benjamin, who understands far more than most five-year-olds. Katzenbach expertly weaves together individual and community forces to reach a startling, yet inevitable, denouement. She says "if my book opens the door to [when] women will all tell their own stories of soul, in their own voice, then Swimming In Trees will have done for others what it did for me..." Swimming in Trees: A Story of Soul is a woman's book for women who struggling to recover their souls. While it may not be an easy read, it's a good, rewarding read.
