Leaving Everything Behind.......2006-08-25
Very useful and honest book. The story of a ordinary old Cheyenne woman, good singer, good beadworker, good grandmother, and good human being. The reader can learn about the contemporary life of the Cheyenne people even surviving traditions. The score of the Cheyenne songs and the follow-up CD make this book still more valuable.

A Quarrelsome Quest.......2006-04-27
Martha Wells's beautifully written "Ships of the Air," the second in the author's "Fall of Ile-Rien" trilogy (and you really have to read the first novel, "The Wizard Hunters," before you tackle this one) surpasses the first in its utter looneyness. We meet once again the spectacularly neurotic Tremaine Valliarde (who has, thankfully, gotten over her suicidal impulses), as she and the companions she met in the first volume explore the world she now finds herself in as they attempt to learn more about the Gardier, who have been wreaking havoc on Tremaine's world. In order to do so, Tremaine engineers an alliance between one of the tribes of this world, the Syprians, and the Rien, after which they attempt to discover just where the Gardier are coming from.
At the end of the volume, after quite a trip, they do.
Once again Wells's elegantly flowing prose style smoothes out the rough spots caused by her tendency, as was the case in the first volume, to write herself into a corner, creating problems for herself that don't really matter. (I suspect that, like her heroine, Ms. Wells makes things up on the fly--perhaps working from only the loosest of outlines. And that's not a complaint.)
Whatever. The completely dysfunctional quest is bizarre fun. Tremaine has leadership foisted on her after she gets married mainly on a dare, and although she hasn't a clue, she's certainly plucky and lucky. The tale, which features sorcery and electricity in equal proportions, moves quickly from land to a converted luxury liner and thence to "flying whales," which is what some of the characters call this world's version of hot-air balloons. (They're filled with hydrogen, not helium. Oh. Oh.) And despite the fantasy elements, much of the novel is grounded in reality. Wells describes perfectly what is bound to occur when a group of ill-assorted people are forced to go sallying forth together. They quarrel; they fight for dominance; they all think they're right. It's quirky fun. For readers anyway.
Exciting.......2006-01-03
I loved the story, kept me interested throughout. Wells is a good author who has a good idea how to keep the reader turning the pages. I hope there will be more from her as I look foward to experiencing more of what she has to offer.
Another book readers of Ships of Air would possibly like is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. Slightly different from hers, still not too bad.
Book Description
Known for her lush, intricate worlds and complex characters, acclaimed author Martha Wells has delighted readers with her extraordinary fantasy novels of daring and wit. With The Wizard Hunters she launched her most ambitious undertaking yet -- the return to the beloved world of the Nebula Award#150;nominated The Death of the Necromancer and The Fall of Ile-Rien. Now the saga continues in a triumph of suspense and imagination.
Despite a valiant struggle against superior forces, the country of Ile-Rien has fallen to the onslaught of the relentless Gardier, a faceless army of sorcerers determined to conquer all civilization.
To save the remnants of her country, former playwright Tremaine Valiarde undertakes an epic journey to stop the Gardier. Rescuing the proud ship Queen Ravenna from destruction, Tremaine and a resolute band of sorcerers and warriors set sail across magical seas on a voyage of danger and discovery. For the secret to defeating the enemy -- and to rescuing the world from the Gardier's inimitable hatred -- lies far beyond the walls of the world, and only the tenuous ties of friendship and honor will keep the band together.
But the Gardier are not the only evil in this tumultuous world, and an ancient terror stalks the ornate rooms and shadowy decks of the Queen Ravenna -- a force so malevolent and enigmatic that even the growing power of the sorcerer's sphere may not be enough to save Ile-Rien from utter ruin.

Kipling, Forester, Dunnett, Wells.......2004-12-30
I was trying to hold out reading these books until the third one was published but I had to give in when I accidentally picked up a copy of Element of Fire and reread it. Set some two hundred years before this trilogy, Element of Fire is not a prerequisite but it did remind me what a great adventure writer Wells is and how little really good adventure fantasy does get written these days. So I grabbed volume one and two of this trilogy off the shelf and hid from the frigid weather in the luxurious staterooms of the Queen Ravenna, luxury liner turned world hopping battle ship.
The background of this book is not mere wallpaper. It's a richly realized world with characters who are both likeable and fallible. There's heroes and traitors and "primitives" who refuse to be neatly pigeonholed. There's politics and danger and a sly, dark humor that is really appealing.
So now what am I going to do until the third installment is published?
A change of location and some wonderful surprises.......2004-11-06
This is the second book in The Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy. As a result, read by itself the book probably would not make a lot of sense as it relies heavily on the events in book 1. As a follow on from THE WIZARD HUNTERS this is an excellent instalment.
Its strange to read a fantasy novel set mostly on a large luxury ocean liner like this one is. We finally get some answers about the Gardier in this book and the series is making steady progess as the books build on one another. I'll be interested to see how this story concludes in Book 3 as I like the characters, especially Tremaine.
promising improvement over first book.......2004-08-08
The Ships of Air, the second book in this series, builds upon the strengths of the first while also improving several of the first book's flaws. As in The Wizard Hunters, the main character's depth and likeability is a major strength. Tremaine is a complex character, displaying a variety of emotions and pursuing a variety of actions, some of them not so clearly understood by those around her or even herself. Several of the side characters from the Wizard Hunters whose characterization suffered a bit from shallowness deepen into more three-dimensional creations here, enriching the overall flavor of the novel and allowing Wells the luxury of dipping into several enjoyable side-stories. The writing moves along crisply and often humorously, another positive carried over from book one.
Where the first book suffered somewhat from repetitive plot, villains painted in too-shallow pictures, and an over-reliance on Tremaine's sphere as a deus ex machina, Ships of Air suffers from none of these. The villains, the Gardier, are explained more fully from inside and out. The storyline finds excitement though expanding existing tensions and adding new points of contention/crisis rather than simply repeating a pattern of capture/escape/capture/escape. And the sphere plays a relatively minor role to the advantage of both character and plot.
Some of the foreshadowing from book one is resolved here and, as is expected of a bridge novel in a series, new questions arise to tantalize the reader. If anything, these new questions are more intriguing than the old ones. This, combined with the improvements in plot and character, make this not only a better written book than Wizards, but also a much stronger lure into continuing with the series. A good recommendation.
Very rewarding.......2004-08-03
Contrary to my last few postings, I do occasionally read books I like. Ships of Air is one of those - matter of fact, Martha Wells is an author I admire a lot. The first book in the series was on the "new books" shelf at the library, and I really enjoyed it. My biggest complaint with the second book is that it took too long to come out. I kind of lost track of the main characters and it took me a while to remember who was who and how they fit.
That isn't as easy as one would expect. Martha Wells writes complex characters that can't be described by a single word endowment. The primary viewpoint character isn't the "Smart" one, nor is she the "brave" one, nor.... she's just Tremaine. Tremaine is smart, determined, brave and a whole host of other virtues. And the really cool thing is that she doesn't really know it.
Martha Wells is better than any writer I can think of right now at showing you both what the character thinks of themselves, and what others think of the character. She doesn't tell you- she shows you. Tremaine, like most people I know, isn't really aware of how special she is. But through others eyes we get to see that she is admirable.
Wells is ambitious and in addition to the half dozen major characters she shows us a host of minor characters that have lives of their own when they're not illuminating the major characters. She also shows us the cultures of three very different and very believeable worlds. Ile Rien, Tremaine's society, is like Europe prior to the World War. Slightly more advanced in some things, and with sorcery added. They are however under attack from a nation known as the Gardier - problematic, since like pre-war Europe, there is no space left on teh globe for an industrialized superpower to emerge without being noticed. In book 1, we discover that the Gardier travel between worlds, and we track them back to Sypria - a pastoral, pre-monetary Matriarchy with some curious religious structures. And we learn more of the Gardier who are fascist conquerors.
Book 2 suffers from some of the sins of a bridge book. Foreshadowing is revealed, loose ends are tied up, but in fact, no new surprises can be written because there's only one book (I presume) left to hold them.
But Wells' manages all these tasks quite well. I do care about Tremaine - more than she cares about herself. I do care about the worlds, and I'm eager to learn more of the various societies. Rarely does an author manage to focus attention on this many things at once and still be successful.
I hope that she continues to write, not just because I enjoy her work, but becasue I hope she learns to tighten up some of the looser constructions. There is enough spread out that I do have to concentrate to keep it all in mind. On the other hand the reason I have to concentrate is that I have to read more deeply than I do with other authors. I have to keep track of what I learn about Tremaine from herself, from her friends and from her enemies. And none of them tell me what they think - they react, and I must study their reactions to learn what they think.
A very rewarding read.
exciting epic fantasy.......2004-06-30
Using magic, the mysterious off-worlders Gardier has conquered Ile-Rien though the embattled Rienish wizards have learned how to open an inter-world portal. Another defeated foe of the Gardier, the Syprians fear magic due to its misuse by evil wizards Their Chosen One, Giliead, is resistant to most magic.
Meanwhile Tremaine Valiarde knows that the soul of the great wizard Arisilde rests inside a magical sphere that is the last hope that the Rienish wizards have to defeat Gardier magic. She and her fellow exiles on Syprian pull a passenger liner through the portal that upsets the locals and bring them to the attention of malevolent wizards who want the sphere. To ease the minds of the anti-magic local populace about her motives, Tremaine marries Gilead's brother Ilias, a freedom fighter who has killed several evil wizards. The intrepid Tremaine leads a raid on the Gardier, but she and others become trapped inside an enemy airship that a wizard transports from this orb to what she assumes is the enemy's homeworld with no exit for her and her allies.
The WIZARD HUNTERS, the second Book of the Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy, is an exciting epic fantasy that contains realistic worlds and genuine races occupying the orbs. The story line is fast-paced and action-packed as the beleaguered Rienish are nearing a last stand with no hope of defeating the conquering Gardier. Tremaine, daughter of the champion of DEATH OF THE NECROMANCER (same world, but outside this series), is a fantastic heroine, as she feels the hopelessness that her race feels. With two great stories already printed, readers will look forward to an all's wells that ends well finale.

good intro to the series.......2005-06-15
If you haven't read any of the Man-Kzin Wars books, then this is a good introduction to the series. If you have, then don't bother with this one. The four stories in this book appear in volumes 1,2,4,and 5. If you want to read All the stories that qualified for the books, then I definitly recommend reading each of the other books.
To the World's Best SF Author: Larry, this is a ripoff!.......2005-05-17
Dear Larry Niven: I have been a science fiction fan my entire life, and consider you the best SF writer ever, better and more imaginative than greats like Asimov, Bradbury, Clark, or Heinlein. I own every one of your books, except this one, including all the Known Space and Man-Kzin Wars.
I think "The Best of All Possible Wars" is a rip-off, however, as every single story has been published elsewhere. I understand that you like to repackage stories, and I don't blame you, but every book should have at least something new!
I hope you will take kindly this friendly admonition from your
most loyal fan. To all others: you should buy all his other books; they are great reading!
A very nice intro (or refresher) to the Man-Kzin Wars.......2004-01-03
____________________________________________
The Man-Kzin Wars is probably the best -- and most successful --
of the shared-world series. Now up to #8, it has spawned a "best-
of", and it's pretty good: two Niven shorts, a Bear/Stirling
novelette, and a Pournelle/Stirling short novel.
The Niven opener, "The Warriors"(1966) has a certain clunky
charm - it was his first Kzin story *and* the first story he tried to
sell. He dreamed it up in math class, working up to flunking out
of Caltech, and rewrote it for years, "trying out what I was learning
from my correspondence writing course." It's enough to give an
amateur writer hope.
Niven #2, "Madness Has its Place" (1990), is professional but
minor. In "The Man who would be Kzin"(Bear & Stirling, 1991), a
powerful projective telepath leads the Kzin Second Invasion Fleet
into disaster. It's clever, logical and smoothly-written. I enjoyed
rereading it.
Pournelle & Stirling's "In the Hall of the Mountain King"(1992)
occupies 2/3 of the book. It's not flawless, with a pointless Buford
Early/ARM-as-Illuminati subplot, plus it's a sequel (to "The
Children's Hour") -- but it moves smartly (after a slow start) and if
the ending doesn't raise up the hair on the back of your neck, you
probably shouldn't be reading this stuff.
I believe all 8 of the Man-Kzin collections are still in print, and
the publisher obviously hopes you'll go out and buy more after
reading this "teaser" collection. Be warned -- they're habit-
forming. The series remains high-quality throughout, tho there
are a few clunkers. It's pretty much required reading for Known
Space fans. My personal favorite is Dean Ing's "Cathouse" &
"Briarpatch", actually a novel, awkwardly split between MKW#1
& #2.
Review copyright 1998 by Peter D. Tillman
Great Collection.......2002-09-21
This book has a great collection of short stories. THere are some that deffinately outshine outhers. It gives you a nice taste of the Man-Kizin Wars series.
An excellent Kzinti intro and feeder for further research.......1998-07-22
My main concern on getting this book via mail was that the main stories were not written by Niven. I almost sent it back as I imagined that no one could possibly produce stories by proxy. The fist two are by Niven and are a couple of short illustrative tales that explain about the Kzin and the events that led to the war. The last two make up the body of the book and are by the guest authors. If you have not read Niven before start with N-Space (a collection of short stories that will get you addicted), however the guest authors really add value and produce an excellent read. I would recommend this book but you have to know the species and background of the Niven universe to get the most out of it. I would "buy it again".

Customer Reviews:
Companion DVD rocks my world!.......2007-10-05
I bought the cookbook in conjunction with the companion DVD (sold separately). Personally, I see the cookbook as mere support for the video instruction. Bought alone--it would seem overly simplistic and even possibly frustrating that various recipes overlap. As support for the DVD explanation it makes perfect sense. Considering the set is for beginners in the raw food lifestyle it is absolutely fantastic. For people who already know all about juicing and vegetable preparation--it can seem a little trite at times--but for the average American ignorant to all things raw--the dvd helps you understand without feeling stupid or lost in strange new vocabularies and unusual foods.
I would have to say--for anyone who complains about the cost of the machines often used in raw fooding--sell your stove--and that alone will more than pay for any and all raw food supplies. That's what I did.
I have a juicer, dehydrator, blender, citrus juicer, food processor, water distiller,etc...all for far less than my old stove. I wouldn't buy this item without the DVD. Together they are a magical pair, great for an experienced raw foodist like myself and for sharing with all my friends who wonder how I can survive and thrive on a raw food diet. The information is practical for a busy life on the go, full of variety and unique flavors without complexity, fast, and tasty. Not to mention recipes similar to old comfort foods to satisfy any old lingering cravings. 5 stars all the way!
The title ain't lyin'.......2007-09-19
This is a fantastic beginner raw foods book. None of the recipes require anything more complicated than a blender and food processor. I taste-tested some of the recipes with a few omnivores with great results. The Walnut Paté and Flourless Chocolate Cake paid for the book alone.
Don't be discouraged by the worst book cover design I've ever seen. The recipes are great. They also need a better food stylist, lighting designer, photographer but only b/c they are not doing this book justice.
awesome recipe book!.......2007-09-12
This book is great! The first recipe I made called the "Guacamole Sandwich" was the best thing I've ever tasted! I'll never think about eating cooked food again! All of the recipes are simple, fast and easy to understand.
I love this book!.......2007-09-07
I am a not a hard-core raw foodist. I just think incorporating raw foods is a good way to work towards a healthy diet. I have a few raw food books but this one has the easiest recipes to prepare. It's perfect for a beginner and even as I progress to more complicated meals, I come back to these recipes again and again. I particularly love the "Not Meatballs w/ Zucchini Pasta," "Mediterranean Kale" and "Walnut Pate." There are good desserts too, such as brownies... yum.
Also recommended: Raw Food, Real World-- More labor intensive recipes but excellent; has beautiful photos. Further, if you are ever in NYC, you may want to check out Pure Food and Wine-- I was skeptical (What?! A raw food restaurant? Come on!) but the food was very tasty and the restaurant had a cozy atmosphere...
Great guide for raw food newbies.......2007-08-30
I am new to the raw food world and found this book by Jennifer Cornbleet to be a fantastic introduction! The recipes were enticing, instructions were simple, and the previously daunting task (for me!) of making interesting food in the context of a raw diet was made not only effortless but delicious with the help of this book. The chocolate mousse and marinara sauce became immediate favorites of mine. The not-tuna pate in sushi is another meal I really look forward to. I have continued to be inspired to incorporate more and more raw meals into my diet from this book and recommend it to anyone else who is getting started in this healthy way of eating!

Great Deal.......2007-01-05
I purchased this book for new ideas in the stuffed animal area. It seems to be a repeat of tried and true bear making. I was looking for something more original. It is a good book for the first time or beginner bear maker. Most of the patterns were easy to replicate and sew, but you definitely need sewing experience to take advantage of what this book has to offer. Good value.
Paws Up ..A Great Book.***** 5 Stars Easy.......2001-07-13
Wow what a wonderful bunch of characters.. The designs are great a nice variety of sizes easy to follow directions.. The patterns are ready to copy and begin sewing no running to the copy place to have patterns enlarged..Thanks Neysa for a great book.....
Wonderful Book .....a teddy-bear maker's dream!.......2001-04-21
The bears designed by the author as stated in the book's title are indeed very whimsical and could be summed up in one word UNIQUE! Neysa shares secrets of bear-making from herself and other artists. These alone prove very helpful. However, the listing that shows suppliers for EVERYTHING you could possibly need concerning bear-making is an incredible "tool" and timesaver. It is SO frustrating when you're in the middle of putting a bear together, realize you're out of a certain size, etc. and now with this new listing, you can IMMEDIATELY find your supplier to place a quick re-order in moments. So much of the hard work to find suppliers has been done for you.
Neysa's patterns "turn into" bears with LOTS of personality! The instructions are easy-to-follow. You'll also enjoy getting to know the artist through "meeting" her creations/designs. Bear-making can be very rewarding. Making one of Neysa's creations will definitely bring a smile to your face! Enjoy!

Book Description
This volume deals with the topics of friendship, flattery, and frankness of speech in the Greco-Roman world. The three topics were often related, with candor or frank criticism viewed as the trait that distinguished the true friend from the flatterer. The book's eleven essays are divided into three parts. The first part introduces the volume and discusses the three topics in the thought of Philodemus and Plutarch. Part two deals with Paul's use of friendship language in his correspondence with the Church at Philippi. Part three examines the concept of frankness (parrhesia) in Paul, Luke-Acts, Hebrews, and the Johannine corpus. The volume will be particularly useful to NT Scholars, classicists, and modern theologians and ethicists who are interested in the theory and practice of friendship in antiquity.

Book Description
Brendan Behan was already a legend of the literary world when he died in 1964 at the age of 41. Today his stature as a celebrated writer and wit, rebel and rake is firmly established, yet posterity tends to focus on the hackneyed image of the archetypal Irishman and spectacular drunk.

Chronicles a talented writer's near-legendary life.......2001-04-29
Brendan Behan: A Life chronicles a talented writer's near-legendary life and illustrates why Behan became one of Ireland's most celebrated artists. Compiled from a wide variety of sources which included prison documents, interviews with family and friends, editors and contemporaries, biographer Michael O'Sullivan was able to present a lucid and vivid introduction to the complex personal world of a genuine literary genius. Brendan Behan: A Life is a "must" for those who appreciate the contributions, influence and work of this unusual and gifted literary figure of modern Irish literature.
Perceptive, Honest and Well Written........1999-08-28
The particular achievement of this fine book, is to extractBrendan Behan from the mire of mythology in which he has been sofirmly placed since his death in 1964 at the age of 41. No easy task for any author given Behan's own willful contribution to the process. It deals fairly and honestly with Behan's homosexual leanings and does so in a non judgemental way using the evidence available rather than mere speculation. It is perceptive and the writing is as, Jack Helbig describes it in Booklist, 'graceful and forceful'. Behan was long over due such a biography.
A Weak Effort.......1999-07-31
Brendan Behan was no literary giant, but he deserves better than this -- poorly and pompously written, indifferently edited, riddled with factual errors (outrageous, considering the research), and lacking in perception and depth. In addition, the author's obsession with Behan's supposed homosexuality is wearisome. Behan isn't important enough to be on the receiving end of a top-flight definitive biography, but it's too damned bad that this is as close as he'll come.

Typical understated brilliance from Behan........2000-05-09
After The Wake is absolutely one of my favorite books; the stories are by turns poignant, hilarious, sad and knowing. This truly is Behan at his best, writing with the rhythmic language of the working class and with insight into human character few authors can equal. In addition, Behan's knack for setting a scene or introducting a character in very few words is in full flourish; I truly felt as if I KNEW the characters (their facial expressions, histories, bad luck - all of it) in a few short sentences. In short, After The Wake is excellent on all counts and is recommended not only as a stellar work of fiction, but also as a perfect introduction to the work of Brendan Behan.
a scintillating set of Dublin vignettes.......1998-04-26
Behan's collection of shorts, including the title story, evokes the richness of Irish language and humour that made Wilde, Shaw, and Behan such legends, without resorting to the didacticism of Swift and Beckett. By turns heartbreaking, hilarious, and downright scandalous, Behan's vigniettes never fail to give what Joyce's Dubliners only suggested: the warm-blooded humanity of Ireland, including its heartbreak and petty follies.

Three Dublin Plays: The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock, & The Plough and the Stars

Book Description
Brendan Behan was an Irish playwright and novelist, as well as a youthful revolutionary. In 1939, at age 16, he was arrested in Liverpool with a suitcase full of high explosives.
BORSTAL BOY is the autobiographical record of Behan's experiences from that day through his imprisonment, trial, remand to reform school and final release. Schools for delinquents in England are called Borstal Institutions, and Behan's account of his years as a "Borstal Boy" is told in vigorous, dramatic prose.

The more I know him, the more I regret that he's gone.......2006-09-07
There are several excellent reviews for this title, so I won't attempt to reinvent the wheel with mine.
The best I can say is that with each page of this incredible book, I find myself closer to a person I never thought I'd like, let alone truly love.
When all is said and done, Brendan Behan is not about The Cause or The Revolution or liberalism or conservatism or anything. Brendan is a human being, in it for Brendan and his best interests. But don't let this make you think that he is a selfish being. Quite the contrary... Brendan finds the humanity in others, far away from the propaganda and agendas he's been fed since infancy. And in that, Brendan finds the humanity in himself.
He's been gone now for... well, longer than I care to believe. But in this, his most powerful and insightful work, he speaks to an audience that is far from outdated, saying the things he feels and believes, with an honesty that most of us wish we had, but work far too hard to conceal. His candidness speaks to our deepest secrets, and opens up a self-awareness in those who wish to explore it.
I am an avid reader, 40 years and going... and I count this as my single favorite book. That is not a distinction given lightly.
Brendan Behan may not be here now, but his message of humanity and humor and growth is ageless. I can only hope that more people take a moment to read it.
A beacon of hope about the nature of mankind.......2005-02-19
This autobiographical account of Brendan Behan's arrest and imprisonment from 1939 until around 1943 in a British Borstal (youth correctional facility)is an outstanding piece of literature.
There are four primary strenghts to this great work.
First, the language is witty, charming, and creative. I found the mixture of Irish and British male adolescent working class slang to be musical and amusing. Behan had a wonderful sense of dialogue and the manner in which young men verbally duel with each other, striving for rank and dominance and friendship.
Second, the story is unique. A 17 year old IRA terrorist is arrested and sent to a youth facility full of adolescent petty criminals. The worlds of incarcerated vs. free; adult vs. adolescent; Catholic vs. Protestant; Irish vs. English: and criminal vs. political prisoner are just a few of the wonderful tensions and juxtapositions that Behan creates.
Third, is Behan's slow pace and ability to observe the most remote details, describe them uniquely, and then weave these streams of images together to create a world and to populate it with characters that ring true with every word.
Fourth, the story is a tremendous testament to the goodness of mankind. Underneath the tensions, the rivalry, the ideology, the story reveals the simple common kindness of mankind. Brendan Behan may have evoked this kindness through his own exceptional openness and acceptance of his fellowman or he may have observed this kindness through this insightful but possibly biased vision of the innate goodness of mankind; but, none the less, his faith in our sometimes distorted and crippled species shines through the autobiography like a beacon of hope.
I wish I could have given more than 5 stars to this superb work. Don't rush through this book. Let Behan take you into his experiences and his kind view of the world of man.
breath-takingly funny.......2002-10-31
I was epecting something a little more politically polemic or bleak, but this account is hysterically funny and inspired. Behan's writing is always vital, his grasp of dialogue perfect, but this novel enjoys a pacing brilliance I dared not hope from a playwright. Most dramatists have trouble with narrative prose because the rhythms are different, but not so with this account of his jail time as an adolescent in England.
Brilliant one-of-a-kind memoir.......2001-02-22
I'm an avid reader and can't believe I overlooked this book for so long. Perhaps I dismissed Behan as a professional Irishman, known more for his carousing than for his writing. What a mistake! This memoir is profound, profane, funny and, ultimately, humane. Read this book now; you're in for a treat.
tragicomedy about a young ira boy and his experiences.......1999-05-05
Borstal Boy makes me laugh out loud and also reminds me of my time in the British Royal Navy. One of the young Brendan Behan's fellow prisoners in the English young peoples' prison is a sailor named Charlie. The book shows some of the horrors of prison life but also a lot of the camaraderie that goes on whenever boys get together. Brendan Behan is very humorous, especially when writing about his court appearances, and when he's singing in prison. His descriptive language is brilliant, this from the first page, "A young one, with a blonde, Herrenvolk head and a B.B.C. accent shouted, 'I say, greb him, the bestud.' I have read this book at least four times, and will continue to be entertained by the wit and skill of the author. GREAT READ!!!
