Book Description
It was, perhaps, strange that Fitzhenry, alive to the smallest evil that might approach his darling child, and devoted to her sole guardianship, should have been blind to the sort of danger which she ran during his absence. But the paternal protection is never entirely efficient. A father avenges an insult; but he has seldom watchfulness enough to prevent it. In the present instance, the extreme youth of Ethel might well serve as an excuse. She was scarcely fifteen; and, light-hearted and blithe, none but childish ideas had found place in her unruffled mind.

Fabulous insite to Mary Shelley's life.......1997-09-29
I loved this book. Mystically it brought me a better understanding of Mary Shelley's life. Unfortunately I was forced to read it in a dusty room in the basement of Cambridge's library because no one has it in stock. The publisher MUST reprint this book because it is an absolute must for all Mary Shelley fans. Don't just stop at Frankenstein, there is so much more grotesque writing of Mary Shelley to experience.

Wordy Poetry.......2004-07-27
Of course, poetry is all words and pictures in your mind... but my opinion is that young children will have trouble with this book simply because it uses words like "moreover," "anon," "laureate," "vocation," and many others that most adults would have to look up in a dictionary to fully understand.
One deliciously clever part of this book is that the text changes as the water flows over a waterfall. (You have to turn the book to read it, as the waterfall goes across the pages from left to right and the words are turned sideways to follow the flow!
If you're looking for a beautifully descriptive poem with lots of old English language, this is perfect. The illustrations are lovely and the poem itself is wonderful... but children may need quite a bit of explanation and assistance if they were to read or listen to this book.
As a teacher, I'd say a practical use might be to give sections of this poem to children (older grades) and have them practice their context clue and dictionary skills to figure out what the words mean.

Matt read the forbidden runes and found himself in a world where reciting verses worked magic. He got himself locked in a dungeon, created a fire-breathing dragon, and eventually discovered a beautiful princess he swore to save. Little did he guess how hard that would be....

Fun Book.......2007-09-20
I read this book for the first time about 10 years ago. I have kept it in my ever growing stack/mountain of books all this time and I read it again a few days ago. This book is just so much a fun that everyone who enjoys fantasy novels should read it. The characters we well developed. The rules for conducting magic are great. As you read the story, you can enjoy the moment.
Wow.......2007-04-30
What I can say about this book? If u like heroic fantasy, comedy and romance... well, this is the best book ever! U can't have so much fun in any other fantasy book, that's sure! I want a movieeeeee !!!!!!!
Best series.......2006-09-05
No series has ever gotten me so entangled in its world before. I want to be in merovance and become the Lord wizard. If you love mystery and dragons and majick get this series
Her Majesty's Wizard.......2006-03-08
Her Majesty's Wizard is about a young historian. While digging in an archeological site in Greece he came upon an old parchment still in readable condition. He found the runes on the parchment readable. So naturally he read them. He found himself in a world where reciting poems and verses worked great and terrible magic. He was the only one with that power in the world. For that the evil powerful sorcerer Malingo locked up for it. His power rivals Malingo's, but Matt does not know. Unable to work his magic properly he brought a dragon into his dungeon instead of a candle. The dragon explained that Malingo overthrow the rightful heir to the throne, the beautiful Princess Alisande. Using magic he broke out of the prison freeing the princess too. He swore loyalty to Princess Alisande as her wizard. Later he was accompanied by a Knight in Black amour. He learned that in order to defeat Malingo he must free the Ancient Giant Ballspear. He goes and accidentally frees Colmain, the Titan of hell. Eventually he frees Ballspear and a great battle wages on. As usual Matt kills Malingo the evil guy and he falls in love with Princess Alisande. They get married and live happily ever after.
There were many places in were I disliked the story. I did dislike the book because of the introductory of the book. This quote" The sun was as bright as a shiny penny lying on the ground." This passage is an example of the many descriptions of the setting in the beginning. They cover the first ten pages which make the book boring at the beginning. Also the ending of the book became less descriptive about the story and more about Matt's emotions. This seemed utterly pointless because it is a waste of time. During this they I had trouble knowing what was happening in the plot. Here is the shortest passage in the ending. "Matt felt like vomiting his heart and mind out that very second." This was the shortest one I can find because the ending is flooded with longer ones.
This book had a pretty good overall plot which kept the story moving. The basic idea is clever enough, but that's about the best I can say for it. The plot is far too easy - any kind of rhyme works exactly what the guy wanted to happen, except in one case, when the oversight he made helped him. Then there's the cheesy and poorly developed romance subplot. This book is the basic Good vs. Evil
Well done... but don't let the dogma hit you in the head.......2004-03-02
As other reviewers have suggested, HER MAJESTY'S WIZARD is somewhat light, fun reading. The whole idea sounds silly at first, but the plot turns out to be original and interesting, and it's surprising well-written, though none of the characters are quite deep enough to keep a place in your heart after you've put down the book.
Beyond the book's light fantasy feel, however, lies what seems to me a modern retelling of a medieval morality play, complete with demons, witches, Hell, God, the Devil, and continual preaching. Of course, there are new elements, like wizards (who are good) and warrior nuns, but in general the whole thing reads as if written in response to every Sunday-school child's prayers for REAL entertainment. Catholic doctrine is literal in the parallel universe in which our hero finds himself, and it is this he must follow while battling the hordes of evil alongside knights, dragons, and a beautiful princess who is always right.
For the aforementioned Sunday school child (or grown up), this book probably IS an answer to prayer: high fantasy meets the (more strict) teachings of Christianity. For the rest of us, it's a little disturbing being preached at when we're trying to enjoy a good adventure tale. The battle between good and evil is a nearly universal theme in more formulaic fantasy novels, and it's all very well, but this book defines good as literal medieval Christian doctrine and evil as everything else, and that -- to me -- is a bit unnecessary.
In spite of that, three stars for an interesting idea and its fairly witty execution.

Beautiful but Impractical.......2007-06-05
I cannot complain about the artwork in this calendar. It's inspirational. But the matter transport stream was obviously distorted on the way to the publisher. This calendar must be hung *SIDEWAYS* on the wall.
It is the fault of the publisher and/or Amazon for not clarifying this. Also, I have to "ditto" all the reviewers who complained about no space to write on it.
PROS: Trek art nicely done.
CONS: Must be hung sideways on the wall (widthwise / landscape). No place to scribble on the dates (although this is not entirely bad).
I wish I'd gotten the desk calendar - at least I could have made room for that.
Not quite what I had hoped...........2007-02-15
Great artwork, absolutely beautiful. But not very useful as a calendar. My first time purchasing a ships of the line calendar, and my last. As much as I enjoy the beautiful artwork, I cant write anything on the calendar, and viewing Amazon's limited images of it, it was not clear ahead of time what the format would be. Not mad, but not entirely pleased either.
Live long and prosper Star Trek Ships of the Line Series.........2007-01-26
First /Rant on..
I don't know if some of the people reviewing below have purchased the Ships of the line calendar for the first time or not however since the last 3 years or so these calendars have always been in a wide-screen "paranomic" format(the way they are supposed to be). The emphasis with this series of star trek calendars is to showcase the excellent almost movie quality art in the widest format as possible on a calendar. As a result the images nearly have a poster quality look to them and hence the 16*9 reminiscent layout. This calendar is not supposed to be used for writing stuff up as the images will loose their "epic paranomic quality" if they are in horizontal format. Go buy a $1.99 flatback calendar if you sooo need to write stuff up on your calendars but leave us trekkies alone to enjoy the star trek art the way its supposed to.
/rant off
As always an excellent star trek ships of the line calendar. I have been buying these calendars since 2002. The last two calendars were tad bit disappointing as they were focused on just one series. This time around we have orginal enterpise, NX-02, NCC1701-C & E, the prototype ships shown in Voyager, the hypothetically refitted NCC-1701-C among others. The images are far better in quality than the last two years. Though bit hazy in some shots but they are more epic and action oriented than the previous two calendars. I will whole-heartedly recommend this calendar to any Trekkie or Trekker out there.
As with past ships of the line calendars this one agains adorns my office wall. I just want to make sure that no one ever forgets(atleast in my company) that I will forever be a Trekkie or Trekker no matter what.
Not what we expected.......2007-01-22
When my husband chose this, he thought there'd be space for writing appts. and such as one would with a standard calendar. There is no space whatsoever to write any appointments, and the calendar is not even printed in a kind of useable format a human would use. Maybe it's meant for someone of another galaxy to use? It would be a lot better if it were formatted in a more traditional format, with at least it looking like a normal calendar. The pictures were lovely, though.
Nice Calender.......2007-01-19
A very nice calender. Add a star if you're a big Star Trek fan.

A Great Cookbook.......2000-08-14
Having just returned from Canyon Ranch and experiencing the food first hand, I had to purchase the cookbook. All the meals at Canyon Ranch were wonderful. The recipes here are just as wonderful. The ingredients are easy to buy and the dishes are also easy to prepare. The directions are simple enough for anyone to follow. All the dishes are spa gourmet. Even people who don't need to lose weight, but just want to eat heathly, will benefit from this book. I highly recommend this one!

Proofs were OK - Finished book is not........2007-09-23
The National Cambridge Collectors Inc. spent many hours revising the Colors book only to have the finished product not meet expectations. The proofs were fine, but when the final printing came out, the results were poor. The NCC has issued the following statement on their web site:
"The long awaited follow up to the original Colors in Cambridge Glass was released by Collector Books in the Summer of 2006. The NCC Board of Directors reviewed the product and issued the following statement at the time:
"This month, Collectors Books released a new Colors of Cambridge book that was produced in concert with NCC. This is a project many members spent countless hours on, as a new book was needed - the original Colors book was no longer going to be printed.
"There have been definite issues and problems in the printing process. Color reproduction that looked acceptable in the "proof stage" does not look good in the final printing. Collectors Books is aware of these concerns and is addressing them.
NCC wants its members and friends to be aware of these concerns as this is not a product we are 100% satisfied with. For those members who wish to buy this product anyway, NCC is allowing members to buy it at the wholesale rate of $17.99. Non-members may buy it from us at $19.99. In all cases, we advise "buyers beware" as this is a product we do not have full confidence in."
PHOTOGRAPHY101?.......2007-08-05
Loved the first volume but the new one has lousy photo's. They are grainy and not what I expected from the National Cambridge Collectors. I can't figure out why they would wait so long to publish a second book and use such poor images. Very disappointed and all I can say is go to a bookstore or library and check it out for yourself BEFORE you buy it.

So what do you expect from a celebrity autobiography? Tales of an impoverished childhood and an unappreciated early career? Angst-ridden revelation? In Jay Leno's take on the genre, tales have only one purpose--laughs. This is a book of jokey anecdotes and humorous stories marking the comedian's progress to the top. The persona of the young Leno is not so different and just as likable as the one appearing nightly on television. Whether it is his mother's advice, his teachers' complaints, or the awkward situations he finds himself in (for example, standing before an Orthodox Jewish audience who have been mistakenly led to expect a Yiddish storyteller) Leno always sees the funny side.
Book Description
The king of late-night television and America's hardest-working comedian delivers the monologue of his life.
Against the odds Jay Leno has emerged as the undisputed king of late night television as host of the # 1 -rated The Tonight Show. His twenty-year stand-up career; working alongside the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Carry Shandling, and David Letterman, was a long, hard, and laugh-filled battle to the top. In this entertaining, anecdote-filled book, Leno delivers the monologue of his life, leaving readers admiring his unstoppable wit and tenacity.
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite in the Genre.......2007-06-08
As a comedian starting the biz in 1990 myself, I enjoy reading these comedian autobiographies. It is very interesting to see how different the industry was back when some of these guys, who paved the path for the rest of us, started. I've always heard great things about Leno, that he is the hardest working guy in show business and one of the friendliest guys in the industry. He is supposedly very supportive and I know he did a free show every year at Zanies in Chicago for all unemployed people, who showed their unemployment checks to get in.
The book tells some of the best stories I've heard of coming up in the business. Leno started back when there weren't comedy clubs, more playboy rooms and strip clubs. He was one of the first club regulars and no doubt his skill, along with the others at that time, helped make the comedy club scene big. (Although I've heard criticisms about his Tonight Show monologues, Jay is known in the industry to have been one of the most talented comedians ever back when he was touring regularly.)
Jay recalls episodes of his life in an easy-to-read style and isn't afraid to tell stories revealing his strong respect and love for his parents. My favorite story wasn't a funny one at all; it was the one where Jay got his first car, even a passion back then, spent lots of time and money to get it all fixed up and was sitting in his high school classroom, staring out the window at impending sudden doom of rain, looking at his convertabile with the top down. He couldn't get to it. Suddenly, his parents drove up and... you'll have to read the book for the rest of the story.
It's also really cool to read about the other up and comers Jay came in contact with in his early years, as well as those who didn't make it or passed before their time. Among them are Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. A fun, quick read for anyone who enjoys standup comedy or wants to read about a grateful star, of which there is a great shortage of today.
FUNNIEST BOOK IN THE UNIVERSE!.......2006-06-08
I have read this book at least THREE times. I've given it to almost everyone I know. I gave it to my nephew when he was 14. One day, we saw him shaking and crying on his bed. When I asked what was wrong, he rolled over and handed me this book!!!! He couldn't even speak, he just pointed to the part he wanted me to read. It is soooo funny. Whenever my mother feels down, she just opens it up to any page and it cheers her up. If I ever met Jay, I'd tell him this is my favorite book. I made the mistake of taking it when I was waiting to see if I would be picked for jury duty. I kept laughing out loud and everyone kept looking at me. It really is funny. I don't know if his life was this funny, or if he left out most of the bad stuff, but if you have ANY sense of humor at all, GET THIS BOOK!
Hilarious Tale of Jay's Rise.......2006-02-14
Jay Leno has been entertaining the world as host of The Tonight Show every weeknight for over 13 years. His monologues covering current events are consistently funny. But his rise to this pinnacle did not come overnight. In fact, all the way up to his surprise crowning (over David Letterman) as the replacement for the retiring Johnny Carson in 1992, he was still known for little more than being a respected stand-up comedy veteran who had gained an extra reputation as a solid guest host for the show when Johnny was on vacation, as well as for his funny visits to (former) good friend Letterman's Late Night program that followed Carson.
This autobiography tells in hilarious detail, through a series of anecdotal episodes, how he struggled for years to make it in show business. From humble beginnings as the son of Italian/Scottish immigrants in Boston, through experiences with various shady characters on the mean streets of Boston, New York, LA and other places- agents, club owners, hippies, mobsters, strippers, prostitutes, johns, hustlers, rednecks and con men of every stripe- as well as discrimination in LA-LA land against his trademark chin-strong image- Leno shows how perseverence and hard work can succeed in the end, and how his desire to make people laugh kept him driven to make it, despite the odds and endless obstacles.
There is also a bit of a stand-up comedy history interwoven in the narrative, describing the rise of comedy clubs like The Comedy Store and The Improv during the 70s and the concurrent rise (and sometimes fall) of Jay's contemporaries like Letterman, Richard Lewis, Freddie Prinze, Jimmie Walker, Andy Kaufman and others.
The book winds down with the story of how he met and bonded with his wife Mavis, his ascension to the peak of the late night talk show mountain, and a touching dedication to his deceased parents. The laughs don't come quite as often, but it is a good way to finish off the tale.
Whether or not all of these occasionally hard-to-believe stories are the whole truth is moot- it's all a riot, and will have you rolling.
His personal stand-up comes through.......2004-11-23
I love Jay Leno. I've always found Letterman a bit too smug and self-consciously hip--except for moments with his mom and the Top Ten Lists. And for critics who derided Jay Leno's championing of Schwarzenegger, Jay, a dyslexic, has a tendency to promote the guy everyone else laughs at (and who Jay laughs at too, but never mean-spirited).
There's plenty of comedy here but what I find most touching is Jay's courtship with his wife Mavis, his relationship with his Italian father and Scottish mother, and the loving way he chronicles his parents' eccentricities. This is the same spirit in which he memorialized his father and mother on-air. Jay Leno truly is Mr. Nice Guy.
Hilarious, incredible, great book.......2004-06-29
Since buying this book I re-read it almost every other week, and I still laugh hard at all those stories. A collection of incredibly hilarious stories of Jay Leno's life. Many of them hardly believable and probably exaggerated, but still hilarious as hell.
The book also provides a great opportunity for learning about other comedians of his age that younger generation may not heave heard about, such as Andy Kaufman and Freddy Prinze, not to mention legends such as Johnny Carson and Merv Grifin.
I learned from this book that contrary to popular belief, most of the successes in the entertainment field have been achieved through hard work, not pur chance-of-a-life-time or being-at-right-time-at-right-moment. But Seinfeld and Leno are proofs that just "being funny" is not sufficient to become a successful comedian. Boy, how hard working Jay Leno was in all those years.
Strongly Recommended.
