LORD OF THE RINGS MEETS SHOUJO.......2005-08-03
Okay, it took me a while to get into this volume, mostly because DEEDLIT'S TALE doesn't feature my favorite Lodoss characters, namely Woodchuck and Karla. However, once I got past that, I was actually drawn into the story.
DEEDLIT'S TALE is the classic fantasy archetype, wonderfully melded with the romantic overtones that you'd expect to find in Shoujo-fare. Parn loves Deedlit. She loves Parn. But her old flame from the Elfen World, a troublemaker named Estas, is trying to split up our lovers so he can have Deed all to himself. Of course, we have to have evil villains, and a quest to flesh things out.
The artwork is much different in this Lodoss War series than in other books. DEEDLIT'S TALE is presented in a much softer style than GREY WITCH or LADY OF PHARIS, but considering this one is really aimed at a female audience I didn't have an issue with that.
Ultimately, it was nice to see Deedlit on her own for a while, outside of the gigantic LODOSS mythology. We get to really know how she thinks and why she chose to go outside the Forest of No Return in the first place.
If you haven't read the first Lodoss series (Grey Witch), DEEDLIT'S TALE will still stand on it's own, whether you're a LODOSS expert or a novice.

Book Description
Elana, a member of an interstellar civilization on a mission to a medieval planet, becomes the key to a dangerous plan to turn back an invasion. How can she help the Andrecians, who still believe in magic and superstition, without revealing her own alien powers? At the same time, Georyn, the son of an Andrecian woodcutter, knows only that there is a dragon in the enchanted forest, and he must defeat it. He sees Elana as the Enchantress from the Stars who has come to test him, to prove he is worthy. One of the few science fiction books to win a Newbery Honor, this novel will enthrall teenage and adult readers.

I Liked It BUT...........2007-03-09
Please keep in mind that I really liked this book. "Enchantress" is well written and enjoyable. That being said, I could not entirely enjoy the story because I had a problem with the heroine. I know this probably says more about me than her but...
The heroine, as thoughtful and insightful as she is, is a bit of a hypocrite. She "suffers" enormously with guilt about even the smallest of lies she is forced to tell her "poor primitive" lover.
On the other hand she only feels a twinge of condescending pity for her fiancé whom she has been more-or-less betraying by concealing her "forbidden love" for the "primitive" for most the book.
And when it comes to lying to her father and sneaking around behind his back; forget about it! She doesn't even hesitate a second and even takes a certain pleasure in it, even when, inevitably, her "disobedience" endangers entire civilizations.
There are only four main characters in this book. The heroine, her male father, her male fiancé, and her male lover. I found myself many times wishing she had a mother, sister, or best friend to whack her upside the head and tell her to stop acting so ridiculous.
The one woman who COULD and WOULD have set her straight was killed as the book opened. (Actually there WAS one other female in the book; a practically-unconscious sacrifice victim being "delivered to the dragon.")
Anyway enough about my problems. If you didn't even notice the things I had issues with, (and you probably didn't) "Enchantress" is a good read.
Best Sci-Fi Book.......2006-05-01
When Elana's mission gets put in jeopardy she faces a lifetime of torture and imprisonment. Will she be able to save herself and the mission? Elana, the Enchantress, and her father were agents of the Federations Anthropological Center and it was their assignment to stop the Imperials from taking over the planet Andrecia. They led Georyn, a woodcutter's son, to believe that a stone was the source of his new magical powers; however, the truth was that they had taught him telekinesis and he wasn't even aware of it. Georyn was supposed to use his "magic" to defeat the dragon (a mechanical weapon used the Imperials). Elana and Georyn were on their way to the Imperials camp when natives captured them. The natives took them to the Imperials camp where they were locked in barracks. The Imperials planned to send them to a research center to be studied. Elana persuaded one of the guards, Jarel, to help them and he let Georyn out of his cell when no one was paying attention. When it appeared that the dragon was going to defeat Georyn, Elana decided to sacrifice herself to try to end the whole ordeal. As she ran and laid in front of the dragon, a flood of courage surged through Georyn. He used his magic powers to save her, stop the dragon, and scare away the Imperials. Georyn went to the king to announce that the dragon had been killed and to get his reward. He decided to explore the rest of the planet he lived on while he had the chance. Elana left Andrecia after accomplishing her goal and traveled back to her own planet. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone who enjoys reading a great book.
This book is written with loads of details. Georyn was the youngest of four sons born to a poor woodcutter, who lived on the planet Andrecia. Elana was a young woman in the First Phase of her training to be an agent. Jarel was an Imperial medic who was determined to prove that his civilization was not right in trying to colonize Andrecia.
Even though this is a science fiction book some of the things in it are realistic to our own world. The cool, green, peaceful planet, Andrecia is the third planet of a medium sized yellow sun. The Federation tried to prevent weaker nations from being taken over by stronger nations. Some types of people tend to be better at some things than others.
This book will stretch the reader's imagination. The Imperials used a huge machine that resembled a dragon to clear an area on Andrecia for the colony they were planning to establish. Georyn was taught telekinesis on a subconscious level, therefore he didn't even know about it. The Federation was an organization meant to save weak planets from the more powerful ones trying to colonize.
I recommend this book to everyone. It is a great read. It is very imaginative but some of the elements of the book seem somewhat realistic. Even if you are not a big fan of science fiction books this is a story that everyone should read.

A Classic Returns.......2006-02-08
I read this many years ago as a young teenager and am pleased that it has returned for a new generation. A young girl finds that her wits, her psionic powers, and the courage of a young peasent turned warrior are all that stands between a primitive world and destruction.
A book to remember.......2005-04-23
I read this in the sixth grade. It was my first encounter with sci-fi, and I loved it. Thanks to Mrs. Wallace, the librarian, for recommending it to me.
New way of history.......2004-07-22
I was expecting to read some kind of Star Wars but I was surprised. Begin with the idea based from the much-talked-about alien, Ms. Engdahl turned it into a concept that what if the ancient things, such as magic, dragon, wizards, witch, beyond our capability to understand, was things from another planet, another world, with civilization higher than ours?
This book really made me think and even helped me in someway to add to my understanding about human, life and alien. A deep thoughtful science fiction story about human civilization evolution.

How to Feed a Crusader.......2006-01-29
From the moment her son Ralph came to national attention, Rose Nader was constantly asked, "What did you feed Ralph?" People weren't just curious about her son's impressive height (6'4") - they wanted to know what they should cook in order to create someone like Ralph Nader, that rare creature blessed with a compassionate heart and the brains and talent to do battle against overwhelming forces - like, say, General Motors. If "You Are What You Eat" is true (and it is; our bodies are made of food), what is Ralph Nader made of? What are the secret ingredients? To answer that question, Mrs. Nader wrote "It Happened in The Kitchen: Recipes For Food and Thought", a book about cooking and child-rearing, with a bonus chapter containing the wit and wisdom of Ralph's father, Nathra Nader, the Oscar Wilde of Winsted, Connecticut.
Mrs. Nader was a woman ahead of her time, a homemaker who cooked low-fat recipes and disdained hot dogs and processed foods made by corporations who had no qualms about pushing their junk foods on the public - and specifically, on impressionable children.
Mrs. Nader lived to be 99 (she died just 18 days shy of her 100th birthday). Ralph's father lived to be 98. At the party celebrating the 40th anniversary of the publication of Ralph's landmark book, "Unsafe at Any Speed," I personally witnessed 71-year-old Ralph, at the end of a long day, jogging up two flights of stairs. No matter what you think of Ralph or where you stand politically, that visual should be enough to make you put on your apron and whip up a big batch of hummus. The recipe can be found on page 44 of "It Happened in the Kitchen."
excellent hummus recipe!.......2000-03-03
i got this book quite a few years ago b'c i had seen ralph nader and his mom on oprah. it was touching and beautiful to hear his mom's philosophy on life and how it all starts with good food. recipes call for whole and fresh foods only -- which is very old world, and very healthy. Ms. Nader grew up in Lebanon, so there are many middle eastern spices and ingredients used. although there are lamb and beef recipes (which i personally have a problem with) there is a fish section as well as one for vegetable-only main dishes. the hummus is the best, and you can adjust it easily to suit your tastebuds...more garlic? more lemon! yum. there are also desserts, bread, yogurt and cheese recipes. the preface is thought-provoking...ralph's mom's (rose's) reflections on food, family and how the two were so important to the development of her mind and her perspective on life. also, she talks about how the time preparing the meals as well as eating them was where you really got to know your family and relatives. i can totally relate to this with my italian background. a lot of my best memories are times spent enjoying food with family. the concept is basic, but often lost in today's micro-wave, fast-food, processed food society.
Product Description
In this lovely and personable cookbook, Mary Laird Mamady takes us back to the homeland of her grandmother-in-law, the highlands of Lebanon, where food is still prepared by families using recipes handed down from generation to generation. One of the glories of Middle Eastern cuisine is that once the basics are mastered it becomes easy to put together meals for four to fifty. This is truly food for communal dining, wonderfully festive to prepare for families and friends.
Here are ingredients redolent of their sun-baked origins burghul (bulgur), chick peas, feta cheese, rose flower water, and pine nuts. As in most traditional cooking, the presentations are friendly and informal, though the author who has traveled to Lebanon, testing familiar recipes, finding and experimenting with new ones is nonetheless an inventive and exacting cook. Evocatively atmospheric drawings by Jana Fothergill provide the prefect finishing touch. This is the definitive book on Lebanese regional food, and an important and beautiful resource for anyone interested in Middle Eastern cooking.

a great book.......2004-07-01
This is one of my favorite cookbooks and has been since it was first published. I am delighted to see it is still available. It is one of two or three cookbooks that I have used consistently for over a decade. It is lovely to read, lovely to look at, but most important, lovely to cook out of. It makes a wonderful gift, which is why I was searching Amazon for it.
Idiosyncratic and special.......1998-12-31
How can you not love a book that practically devotes a whole chapter to dehen, or rendered lamb fat? This book is different from most Middle Eastern cookbooks, and focuses closely on one area and culture. Many of the recipes are unusual, surprisingly easy, and authentic. It provides a window on Lebanese (Druze?) culture in both the U.S. and the old country. The recipe for chicken with sumac in this book, may be for the limited time, effort and money required to put it together, one of the world's greatest dishes, and it deserves to be better known.
Book Description
Lebanon's cuisine draws from a culinary history truly unlike any other in the world. This healthy and wholesome diet is a reflection of Lebanon's unique interaction with Babylonians, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Byzantines, Turks, and more recently, Europeans.
This tantalizing collection of vegetarian recipes-passed down from mother to daughter, generation after generation-has been carefully collected from the rural villages of Lebanon, patiently tested and adapted to Western kitchens.
Accompanied by colorful photographs, these tempting and delicious dishes are straightforward and easy to prepare. They offer exotic alternatives to those wishing to rely more on plant protein and less on meat protein.

One of my favorites, a trusted cookbook.......2004-07-29
This book is one of my kitchen standards. I've had it for years, and have given it as a gift several times. As we have been eating less meat over the years, this book continues to be more useful. I'm part Lebanese, and find these recipes to taste as authentic as my relatives' traditional dishes. No wonder the book continues to be popular.
One of the best cookbooks.......2002-07-06
I don't own many cookbooks, though I must have read hundreds. Most don't seem to be that authentic; they put in ingredients people want - usually lots of cheese. This book is one of the most authentic ever written, and it's probably the finest Lebanese cookbook. The recipes are simple, and the photos are pretty minimalist, but the food is fantastic. Buy this book!
Excellent Cookbook for Vegetarians and Non Vegetarians Alike.......2002-01-22
This is one of our favorite cookbooks. My wife and I use it for all types of occasions and are constantly inspired by the book's use of ingredients. We highly recommend this book to those looking to learn more about traditional Lebanese food, as well as those looking for great tasting Middle Eastern inspired vegetarian food.
The best of Middle East cooking.......2001-03-28
Lebanese cooking is the queen of Middle-eastern cuisine. (If you are lucky enough to live in the Northeastern US where Lebanese restaurants are to be found, you can experience this yourself.)
The Lebanese are particularly skilled with vegetarian foods like beans and salads. You can make hummus (chickpea and sesame puree dip) yourself instead of paying high prices for average preparations in the grocery store. Also, the tabbouleh recipe here is wonderful. This is a salad of soaked bulgur wheat (a bit like a pasta or rice, made of cooked, dehydrated cracked wheat berries) and tomatoes, parsley and lemon. It's refreshing and great for summer and to take to covered dish parties.
You don't need meat to make good Lebanese food, as this book amply demonstrates. This is now one of our kitchen standards, and it really adds color and life to the vegetarian table.
A wonderful guide for exploring Lebanese cooking........1998-08-05
This easy to read, easy to follow recipe book contains many Lebanese and Middle Eastern recipes common to almost all Americans (hummus) and goes beyond them to offer many other simple but elegant and wonderful dishes. The color photos demonstrate how the foods are traditionally served.
The book also contains information on ingredients unknown to the typical American chef, and some background on Lebanese cooking. Many of the recipes are easy, requiring only ingredients found in any neighborhood supermarket.
The book's only weakness is the state-by-state list of Middle Eastern grocers; numerous long-time grocers in my area, for example, are not included.
As an introduction and immersion into Lebanese vegetarian cuisine, this one's a winner.

Bill Zehme's biography of comic actor/performance artist Andy Kaufman (subject of the feature film Man in the Moon) is a meticulously researched, eminently readable, and very strange book--this last being perhaps no surprise given its subject. Written over a six-year period, Lost in the Funhouse is crammed with details gleaned from interviews with the actor's family, friends, teachers, coworkers, and unwitting participants in Kaufman's pranks. In particular, the book provides great insight into Kaufman's early life in Great Neck, NY, his relationship with transcendental meditation, and his first forays into nightclubs in the early '70s. Zehme, author of The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and the Lost Art of Livin', weaves together multiple narratives from varying perspectives, including passages in which the author appears to have entered his subject's brain. Zehme did have access to unpublished letters and manuscripts (which fans would certainly like to see published on their own one day), but the only person who could legitimately verify the accuracy of these passages is no longer with us.
At its best, the book approaches that apex of artful celebrity bi-fiction, Nick Tosches's Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams. The transitions from one perspective to the next are a bit jarring at first, but once the reader gives in to Zehmes's collage of multiple personalities, one is considerably closer to understanding the book's subject. Kaufman was nothing if not a collection of various intense personalities: the young boy continually mourning his grandfather's death; the likable and naive Foreign Man; the talentless and irascible lounge singer Tony Clifton; the bliss-seeking student of TM; the devoted and loving son who never had anything to do with his own child; and world champion of inter-gender wrestling. Lost in the Funhouse is the one Kaufman tome that will please neophytes as well as those with their own Andy Kaufman Web sites. --Mike McGonigal
Book Description
From Bill Zehme, renowned journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller
The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and the Lost Art of Livin', comes this masterful biography of the late comic genius Andy Kaufman.
Based on six years of research, Andy's own unpublished, never-before-seen writings, and hundreds of interviews with family members, friends, and colleagues,
Lost in the Funhouse takes us through the maze of Kaufman's mind to see, firsthand, the fanciful landscape that was his life.
Andy Kaufman was often a mystery even to his closest friends. Remote, aloof, impossible to know, his internal world was a kaleidoscope of characters fighting for time on the outside. He was as much Andy Kaufman as he was Foreign Man (tenk you veddy much), who became the lovably dithering Latka on the hit TV series Taxi. He was a contradiction, a paradox on every level, an artist in every sense of the word.
In
Lost in the Funhouse, Bill Zehme sorts through a life of misinformation put forth by a master of deception to uncover the man behind the legend. Magically entertaining, it is a singular biography matched only by its singular subject.
Customer Reviews:
A Stellar Buy!.......2007-09-06
For all Kaufman lovers and those not familiar with the entertainment genius this book is a must have. Zehme does a stellar job of rummaging through countless interviews and inside information to dig for the truth of an extremely complex man. It is highly recommended that you read both "Lost in the Funhouse" as well as "Andy Kaufman Revealed" by best friend Bob Zmuda. I recommend reading this book first. There is much information in this book that is uncovered in the Zmuda book. However, the same goes for this book compared to the Zmuda book. Zehme spends an equal amount of time on Kuafman's personal and professional life. The author does such a wonderful job of opening Andy's world to the reader that, by the end of the book, you feel an undeniable connection to the late, great genius. Thus, the book saddens the reader when Andy meets his supposed demise.
A great book on all levels and a definite must have for any Kaufman lover or new reader without previous knowledge of the great "song and dance man". FIVE STARS!
Andy Kaufman Revealed.......2006-03-20
I was first introduced to the comic stylings of Andy Kaufman when I was eight years old; I turned on the t.v. and there he was being voted off Saturday Night Live. Kaufman intrigued me, and my interest in his work was further heightened with the release of Man on the Moon a few years later. That being said, I started reading Lost in the Funhouse as a way to get information for a research paper I was writing on Kaufman, but Bill Zehme's book entertained me so much that I read the entire thing. Writing about the performance style of Andy Kaufman can't possibly be an easy thing to do, but Zehme does so with grace and clarity, not sparing any tidbit of information that led to Kaufman's career. The best thing about Lost in the Funhouse is that Zehme has been able to capture pure Kaufman-esque moments from his early childhood. The way Zehme presents the material is like Kaufman wrote it himself, and it is by far the best information I've gotten on Andy Kaufman to date. Zehme's book is a must-read for any fan, as well as those who detested Kaufman, because it shows Kaufman as brashly as he could have ever hoped.
Great, but sad too.......2005-10-30
Zehme does a magnificent job prtraying the life and attitude of Andy though Andy's biography. In my opinion Andy was an amazing artist who revolutionized entertainment. He was truly an avant-garde and eccentric individual. Ahhh, I'll try to keep this a reveiw and not a glorification of his life!!! He was amazing and Zehme does an amazing job with the story of Andy. I reccomend this book for Kaufman fans or anyone interested in comedy, absurdity, or creativity. Just be prepared for the ending-keep some tissues next to your bed while reading the final chapters.
Well-written biography of a peculiar man.......2005-09-05
Accomplished journalist Bill Zehme tackles a difficult subject when he decides to write about the private life of Andy Kaufman. Kaufman is so conflicted that his private persona cannot be wrapped up into a tidy package, which makes it impossible to reduce him to a chapter-sized description.
There are lots of contradictory opinions of the way that Kaufman viewed the world, and viewed himself. Rather than picking a majority opinion and going with it, Zehme has given us all of those fragmentary glimpses of his life, and we are left to draw the conclusion that Kaufman himself didn't really understand who he was.
Anyone who has ever laughed at any of Kaufman's spectacular performances will enjoy this book, which does describe many of Kaufman's bits in a way that allows the reader to appreciate their humor. This is also a look into the entertainment industry from the perspective of an outsider; Kaufman was a peculiar bird in Hollywood, as he could entertain audiences, but couldn't mesh with the political machine that assigns roles to tinseltown's denizens.
This is a good, solid biography of an interesting subject, and is worth the time it takes to read.
Andy Kaufman a "Stand Up Guy".......2004-04-20
What a great comedian and "thespian" A man of many faces moods and contrasts. I never will forget his "Saturday Night Live" debut. Great book I highly recommend.
