When Connor's old girlfriend from Ireland shows up at the wedding supposedly with Connor's baby, it certainly is a shocker. But the shocker of the that subject is when Molly takes off without the baby and leaves Connor and his housemates to deal with hthe little tike.

This was the third book of the series "Making Waves" these books are excellent and leave you hanging til you buy the next one. This book concentrates on Connor and Chelsea getting married. Also it goes more in depth about Grace and her alcoholism, there is hope for her! Justin's father comes back to see him and the outcome is surprising... You'll just have to read it and find out!

Price invokes Susan Sontag on camp, and Jacques Derrida on writing, to support his incisive view of what works and what doesn't work in contemporary Lovecraftian fiction.
The basic idea of a Mythos tale . . . is an interior skeleton like a mammal's, a frame on which to grow . . . It forms the baseline against which the new variations may be measured. It is not a denial of flexibility; it is something to be flexible with.
Preface by Ramsey Campbell, fascinating introduction by Price, beautiful cover art by Gahan Wilson, and 26 tales by Campbell, Lumley, Sutton, Wagner, Tierney, Lupoff, Ligotti, Burleson, Rainey and others. No overlap with previous anthologies.

Book Description

H. P. Lovecraft was the eerily prescient genius who first electrified readers in Weird Tales magazine. His tales changed the face of horror forever and inspired the bloodcurdling offerings of a new generation. These brilliant dark visionaries forge grisly trails through previously uncharted realms of mortal terror.

THE PLAIN OF SOUND by Ramsey Campbell: In the beginning they could find no source for the throbbing vibrations; in the end they could find no escape.
THE HORROR ON THE BEACH by Alan Dean Foster: Along the coast of Santa Barbara, the mighty Pacific Ocean can no longer contain—or conceal—an ancient, insatiable evil stirring in its depths.
THE KISS OF BUGG-SHASH by Brian Lumley: It mattered not how innocent the students’ motives seemed; the demon had been summoned, and the price had to be paid—every last red drop of it.
THE FISHERS FROM OUTSIDE by Lin Carter: A man obsessed with unlocking the secrets of a race older than time would not be disappointed— doomed perhaps, devoured possibly, but definitely not disappointed.

AND TWENTY-ONE MORE TALES OF FEAR

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Hugely disappointing.......2007-02-01

I've been trying lots of the new Lovecraft inspired anthologies over the last year, having been a Lovecraft fan for more than 25 years, and have just finished this most recent.
Now unlike the majority of the Lovecraft fan world, I think R.M. Price is hugely over-rated. Yes he knows Lovecraft, and literature but he is pompous, self-absorbed and a turgid writer. As editor of by far the worst of the Lovecraft anthologies, The Tsatoggua Cycle, he made me know fear; fear of Lovecraft pastiche and his overblown literary criticism. But I loved his reading of The Dunwich Horror, and based on positive reviews of this book I tried it, and am deeply sorry I've wasted my time on it.
While at least it stays away from the Clarke Ashton Smith type of fantastical imitations, I ploughed through exactly half the book before I came on something good in The Keeper of Dark Point, by John Glasby. By good, unfortunately I mean in comparison to the drivel before it. So many of the stories here finish with the dreaded that you realize just how poor Price's editorial skills are. (Not to mention his writing in his own story). There are average stories, bad stories, awful stories, attempts to do something different that completely fail ( Richard Lupoff's Lights! Camera! Shub-Niggurath! great title, unbelievingly long and unfunny lead-in)and by my count 2 out of 25 very good stories, Thomas Ligotti's Vastarien and David Kaufman's The Church at Garlock's Bend.
Skip this, save your money. "Cthulhu 2000" is the best of the Lovecraftian anthologies with "The New Mythos Circle", "Shadows Over Baker Street" * "Shadows Over Innsmouth" seems ok so far but I've read little of it yet.
Go back and buy the new Penguin releases of Lovecraft with editorial by ST Joshi, a better editor and writer.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven but plenty of chills for horror aficionados.......2004-05-18

The world that Howard Phillips Lovecraft created continues to exert its spell decades after his death. This collection brings together twenty-five tales by authors spinning their own variations and extrapolations of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, which postulates the existence of an ancient, evil race of beings outside the generally known dimensions of time and space that lurks in the shadows, constantly waiting and watching for its chance to reconquer the earth and destroy humanity.

It's a creepy thought, and the best tales in this collection are those that filter this paranoia in new and unexpected ways: "The Horror on the Beach," by Alan Dean Foster, for example, transplants the monster to the sunny California coast. "The Stone on the Island" by Ramsey Campbell is a masterpiece of understatement, all the more terrifying for its low-key, economical prose. "The Kiss of Bugg-Shash" by Brian Lumley is more in the classic Lovecraftian vein of the disgusting, slimy, implacable enemy, but chilling for all of that. Less successful are entries that ape Lovecraft's over-the-top and frankly dated writing style, or that stick too closely to his original concepts and geographical settings. Nevertheless, as a whole this collection offers plenty of skin-crawling reading. Don't read it when you're alone, or during a power outage.

Sixteen outstanding stories by Hugo and Nebula-award nominee, Jack McDevitt. TABLE OF CONTENTS: Contents: Standard Candles Tidal Effects Translations from the Colosian Black to Move The Fort Moxie Branch Promises to Keep Gus To Hell with the Stars Ellie The Jersey Rifle Cruising Through Deuteronomy Tyger Auld Lang Boom Dutchman Cryptic Time Travelers Never Die BACK COVER: McDevitt's tales have an emotional resonance that lingers well after the book has been set aside. Standard Candles is a strong, strong collection. -Cemetery Dance

Always engaging and insightful, McDevitt can be counted on to ask the deep questions. - David Brin

Jack McDevitt is one of those rare science fiction writers capable of taking the tropes of the field - from war and the military to alien contact to scripture vs. science - and breathing wonderful life into them. He's always a pleasure to read. - Gregory Frost

It's not McDevitt's style, though his prose is wonderfully clear and deceptively simple. It's not his plots, though his stories always ask hard questions, and never settle for easy answers. For me it's his humanity. McDevitt understands the way people talk and think and behave, and still somehow has boundless compassion for the human animal. - Lewis Shiner

In both his novels and his short fiction, Jack McDevitt has shown a terrific range of skills and imagination and speculation. Only one thing remains the same from piece to piece to piece - they're all damn fine stories. - Kevin J. Anderson

Jack McDevitt is a master of the short story form. - Kathleen Ann Goonan

The ideal writer can stretch your mind with a wonderful concept while also touching your heart with a personal story. Most of us fail at one or the other, but from the very beginning of his career Jack McDevitt has shown that he can do both. - Michael Cassutt

You hold in your hand some of the best work of one of our best writers. Enjoy! - James Patrick Kelly

McDevitt is the real thing: a writer with depth, integrating scientific issueswith human concerns on a vast stage, lit by vivid colors. - Gregory Benford

Jack McDevitt is one of the few authors in contemporary science fiction whose work moves faultlessly from scientic speculation to speculations on the nature of reality and the human condition. McDevitt fashions fully realized worlds, rich in imagination, peopled by fully believable characters. More important, you can count on him for a damn fine read. - Bruce Boston

It's high time indeed for a Jack McDevitt story collection! McDevitt writes with wisdom, compassion, and an abiding sense of wonder - everything that has drawn me again and again to the worlds of science fiction - real people with real concerns, in extraordinary settings. If you haven't read this man's work, start now! - Jeffrey A. Carver

Long after you've closed this book, the stories will stay in your mind and in your heart. - Karen Joy Fowler

It has long been a landmark in a science fiction writer's career when a publisher decides it is time to publish a collection of his or her best short fiction. Once upon a time, the publishers who did such things were mass market paperback houses. Today they are largely (not exclusively) small presses that market to the dedicated SF audience. NESFA Press is a good example; it collects work of Boskone guests of honor. So is Tachyon Publications, as it demonstrates with Standard Candles: The Best Short Fiction of Jack McDevitt.

McDevitt has done a number of very interesting novels, of which the last two were The Engines of God and Ancient Shores. The short fiction has been accumulating for years - clever, insightful, often marked by oddly inconclusive endings, and quite neglected in the sense of fame, fortune, and awards. Two of the sixteen stories thus ring of personal revelance: the title story concerns an astronomer who, though he has never flared as brightly as a nova has had a long and glowing career; "The Fort Moxie Branch" offers the notion of a future library that preserves the work of neglected writers and materializes rather like an Isher weapons shop to offer afirmation when a writer needs it most. "Auld Lang Boom" is the butterfly whose wings cause hurricanes - everytime two old friends meet, something awful happens in the world; the surviving heir of one, reading the diary left behind, gets quite spooked. "Cryptic" is the tale of closing down a SETI operation and finding the files of an old computer disk with frightening implications. "Time Travelers Never Die" plays fast and loose with continuity when even after death a time traveler is able to maintain contact with his lover. "The Jersey Rifle" concerns the discovery of the world's greatest chess player, an unassuming druggist who can beat anyone. And more. - Analog

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2004-12-03

Of the 16 stories in this collection, I thought 4 were really good. These are: "Black to Move", "Promises to Keep", "Ellie", and "Cryptic". The other stories all started with some interesting premise but just didn't go anywhere; I was always expecting some kind of interesting finish that never came. I didn't bother to read the one longest (50 pages) story; I was afraid to. Nevertheless, the stories named above are quite good. I had thoroughly enjoyed McDevitt's first novel, "The Hercules Text", and still intend to try the "Engines of God" series.

      5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Achievement.......2004-03-23

Although McDevitt is a wonderful, fine-tuned specialist in long, complex novels for which he has been justly praised, it's almost as if he has surpassed himself in these short stories. The few things I dislike about the novels - the many minor characters or the practice of using "headlines" - are absent here. Instead we have an exuberant celebration of the English language in all its glory.

It is the investigation of the human condition and the events that impact that condition that is the main concern of great writers. And in this case, no one in science fiction comes close to approaching McDevitt's collection. The short story as a literature form has come into its own lately but the quality has lagged behind. Many writers need LOTS of pages and time to develop an idea to its fullest but McDevitt never fails.

It is his shrewd insight into the affairs of mankind, his hints and suggestions, the power of inference, the almost ephemeral nature of his characters's actions. From the very subtle and very understated opening work from which the collection derives its name to the last, it is a series that inspires awe and deep thoughts - an almost perfect case of knowing just the right moment to pause and sometimes stop. Magnificent!!

      5 out of 5 stars Asimov's Gain Was John Campbell's Loss.......2002-10-08

I confess. I'm a disciple of John W. Campbell from the Golden Age. Good old Hard Science Fiction. That's always what I dig. But, ,,,I'm begining to wonder if Isaac Asimov, besides being a turncoat, didn't have something going for him after all. Now here is a book by an author that was mostly published by Asimov and apparently never at all by Campbell. But Wow! Yes, they really do differ from your typical Analog story, but, as the French say, "Vive La Difference!" Yeah, I know, I would have flunked French, too, if I had taken it. But to get back to McDevitt. This is the best book of short stories I can remember reading in a long time. And are they memorable! You bet! Only one problem, I liked all the stories but one: Standard Candles, the first story and the one the book is named for. Downbeat and nothing seems to happen. But, damn it, its the only one that I can't get out of my mind. When I try to think of the book - even to write nice things about it, all I can think of is the story, Standard Candles. Such a simple, straightforward story. How could I miss what was really going on? Why did the author consider it good enough to name the whole book? Why can't I forget it? There were others that hit me like a ton of bricks, right where I live - or have lived. Do we all have long lost first loves? But Why, Why, Why can't I forget that first story!

      5 out of 5 stars A science fiction treasure........2001-04-30

This is one of those few books that one always hopes to find, but so rarely does. It's kind of odd: I enjoy the novels that McDevitt writes, but the place where he's absolutely incomparable is his short fiction. I'd become turned on to him from Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine (stories "Black to Move" among others), which had totally blown me away, as well as the magazine "Chess Life," if you'll believe it. I was somewhat surprised to hear that he did, indeed, have a book of short stories, and was even more surprised to see it had been a fairly small printing. Upon getting it, though, I was not to be disappointed: with the occasional exception (including, oddly enough, the title story), this book is amazing. Easily compares, in my opinion, with the best of Bradbury, Clarke, or Asimov -- people for whom I have tremendous respect. Mr. McDevitt is able to build a truly marvelous universe, and then capture you in it. Not all the stories end happily; few of them even really have much *happen* in them. Instead, they are built by pieces, slowly and methodically put together, to reach a final, frequently stunning conclusion. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be proud.

If you like science fiction that makes you think, then you need to get this book.

      5 out of 5 stars What a book !.......2000-06-20

This is what I call a short story collection. McDevitt has the ability to charm his readers into strange territory. A Pied Piper figure that we eagerly follow into the story. But more than that he sparked my interest in some contemporary American literature. Worth reading and at a reasonable price. When it comes out in paperback I'll get a copy so that I can make it all tatty and foxed.

5 out of 5 stars Great kids cookbook.......2007-10-02

This cookbook is lots of fun. Almost all of the items are meals a child will enjoy cooking and eating. My kids couldn't wait to eat the "Worms and Eyeballs." Some of the spices are a bit heavy for a younger child however but it is easy to tone down to your own tastes during preparation. Definately a worthwhile purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Recipes Look Good, But They're Not.......2007-09-04

I've tried two of the recipes in the book, and they're not too good. The Middle Eastern Rice Bowl has a lot of chicken (I don't really like chicken.). The Thai Rice Bowl had a weird flavor to it. There are so many recipes that look good in there, like the Fuji Apples and Peanut Buttery Caramel Dip, but now that my mom says that the recipes are "off", I don't think they will taste that good. Remember, this is a kid's opinion, so you might not agree.

      2 out of 5 stars Eh..........2007-09-04

Got this books for my now 8 year old daughter since she's developing her interest in cooking with mom (me). Have to say that many of the recipes seem to be "off" -- either in the ingredient amounts or the quantity that it makes. We recently made the Thai Rice Bowl and the recipe fails to note when to add the garlic, as well as when the chicken is "cooked." Since this is supposed to be a kids (??) cookbook, I really don't think this is Ray's best book. Also found the Middle Eastern rice bowl (as well as the Thai one) to be completely underseasoned. Also agree with many of the previous posters that Rachael OBVIOUSLY does not have children -- many recipes are not child-friendly (either for cooking it themselves or eating it). Not one of my favorites.

      5 out of 5 stars Easy format.......2007-08-27

My children love this book. The layout and illustrations are so attractive the kids are drawn to it. It's completely kid friendly and with that gives the kids a sense of ownership of the book, which makes them more excited about getting into the kitchen.

Not to mention mom loves the recipes, too!

      2 out of 5 stars soso.......2007-07-20

I love rachael ray but these recipes are not for kids. They are not easy and the ingredients arent kid friendly.

      Book Description

The tale of the 1846-1847 Donner Party whose members were snowbound in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Anthropologist, Terry Del Bene uncovers the layers of social and cultural belief and action that resulted in the tragedy. To lighten the mood, the author also includes 19th century recipes that the travelers cooked on the trail--before the food ran out.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Kinda Dull if You've Already Read about the Donner Party.......2006-02-01

The recipes are very interesting and I'm going to try one or two (just can't bring myself to try and make the Brain Stew though). However, if you've read any other book on the Donner Party, this author's narrative is nothing but a repetition of other's material, with very little insight (i.e., character development or details) into the people and events of the party.

I would have much rather read discussion of how the cooking was performed, expanded discussion of diets or meals, food prep and storage, just, in general, diet/food-related anecdotes and history from the time of the Donner Party and travel along the Oregon Trail. This book provides very little of that.

If you have no intention of reading any other book on the Donner Party, then by all means, get this book! You will enjoy it and the story of their travels and travails will give you a good background. But if you've read anything on the Donner Party, this book is not worth the money. It is just a rehash of their story with a bunch of frontier receipes thrown in without relation to the context.

5 out of 5 stars HISTORY MADE FUN !!.......2004-02-21

When most people hear about a cook book in relationship to the Donner Party .. I doubt their stomachs start rumbling with hunger!! However, this book has authentic recipes mixed in with true history. Few people are aware of the facts "behind the scenes" concerning the fate of the Donner wagon train and what led up to the terrible winter disaster. Terry Del Bene even tells HOW to have a SUCCESSFUL Donner Party of your own!! Great read!! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Offers a glimpse of life and cooking on the westward trails.......2003-12-08

In The Donner Party Cookbook, anthropologist and archaeologist Terry A. Del Bene applies a dark humor with his accurate representation of 19th century cooking as reflected by the doomed Donner Party of 1846-1847. Deftly blending history, anecdotes, and recipes that have withstood the test of time, this unique and absorbing culinary tour of a bit of American frontier history is especially recommended for its authenticity and presentation style. From Rabbit; Gruel; and Brain Stew, to Bacon and Rice; Scrapple; and Carrot Coffee, the narration and recipes offers a glimpse of life and cooking on the westward trails of over a century ago, making The Donner Party Cookbook a superb read and a prized addition to dedicated cookbook collectors.

              1. The Best of Designing Women The Best of Designing Women

              ASIN: 0312154542

              Book Description

Meet Delta Burke--beloved star of Designing Women, accomplished actress, founding partner of Delta Burke Design, a sassy, glamorous actress for whom learning to live as a "real-size" woman has presented all kinds of opportunities. A beauty-pageant winner, Delta had a much-publicized weight gain during Designing Women and was the subject of press speculation and gossip. But as she started to come to terms with the fact that her body would always be full-figured, she found her fans loved her all the more, and the outpouring of support began to compensate for the emotional strain.

With wit, honesty, and directness, she discusses the pain she felt, her agonizing efforts to achieve a size 6 body, and her own journey to self-acceptance, which led her to found Delta Burke Design, a clothing company for the real-size woman.

Filled with inspirational, motivational advice, humorous anecdotes, and style tips from this nationally adored celebrity, Delta Style shows how positive thinking can transform your state of mind and give you the confidence to live up to your own--and only your own--expectations.

Beautiful Delta is a perfect role model for the millions of women who find coping with a real-size body requires strategy and acceptance, as well as for those captivated by her screen presence and smart, upbeat approach to life.

              5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.......2003-03-18

I thoroughly enjoyed Delta's book. While I normally would've been anything but interested in a woman who spent so many years in beauty pageants, I've always liked this actress. She was talented and hilarious on "Designing Women," and there was always something about her that let you know she was interesting, quirky, good-hearted, and strong. (She herself says she always knew pageants were a means to an end.) I was one of the people who sent her a letter of support when that ridiculous obession with her weight gain began. (And she sent back a lovely card of thanks.) Delta sort of had to go through it for all of us full-figured women first - through her experience, the media and U.S. as a whole seemed to realize for the first time that most women in this country are not a Hollywood size 0 (duh). I appreciate how she stuck out the difficult times and has stayed a beautiful person. Her book was a great mix of autobiography and style, makeup and clothing tips. I read it just after reading Carnie Wilson's homage to getting drastic surgery as a way to slim down, and while I realize that Delta was never as dangerously heavy as Carnie, it's such a relief to read about a full-figured woman who accepts herself as she is and is helping others do the same. Go Delta!

5 out of 5 stars Just be yourself, big, small, or in between.......2002-02-23

Delta Burke has been a favorite of mine since I saw her on the HBO series 1st and 10. She has such a beauty about her, regardless of size. Her book tells about her life and struggles to meet everyone else's expectations. She didn't become comfortable with herself until she learned to accept herself for who she is. The first part of the book is dedicated to that search. I laughed and I cried along with her. To me, it took a lot for her to tell this story. I am not into the tabloids nor tabloid tv programming. I would much rather read about these things from the people involved.

She gives a lot of beauty advice and style advice in the second part. I did not always find her home formulas to be the best. Her tips, on style, however, I really enjoyed.

The thrid part, is a resource section that gives a lot of web sites. I really enjoyed surfing the sites listed.

The pictures of her family and throughout her career were enjoyable to me. Some of us can relate to these people and places. They are throughout the entire book.

Delta's way should be the way for all of us. Just be who we are, love ourselves for that, and let our inner beauty shine through. This book was really needed. Thank you, Ms Burke.

4 out of 5 stars A book as great as the lady!.......2001-06-30

Ever since the 80s when Designing Women hit its peek I have adored Delta Burke. I have even had the pleasure of meeting her a time or two. Why it took me so long to get around to reading this book, I do not know. Even as an admirer of Ms. Burke I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I reads more like she's sitting in your living room telling her stories than stiff pages of an autobiography. Her personal style and sweetness come shining through in the pages. I could have lived without the beauty tips & dressing tips in lieu of more personal stories, but her shopping guide was a nice touch. There are lots of great pictures spanning her entire life. She is a true southern lady and a steel magnolia to boot.

              5 out of 5 stars Be yourself.......2001-03-29

I loved the book. I have always been heavy. I tried to lose weight for someone else not myself. At one time I did lose 50 pounds but I have put it back on and then some. Delta taught me to be myself and love myself for whom I am not how much I weigh. Her beauty tips were great also. I usually don't were make-up because I really don't now how to apply it. But Delta showed me how to be beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside. I have been wearing make-up and now I feel pretty. Thanks for always being there for the big girls.

4 out of 5 stars Real Size Women Find a Mentor.......2001-01-11

This book is a fun, quick read. It practically jumped off the bookshelf in the "Biography" section. And though the first (and longest) chapter of the book is Delta's autobiography, this book is much more.

The second half of _Delta Style_ is full of Delta's tips about how to dress to fit your own shape and style. She also has good tips on make-up and recipes for various home-made facials along with other skin care tips. The third chapter is all about hair. And at the end of the book is a good reference guide to finding products and services geared to real size women -- including web resources.

What I liked best about the book is that Delta comes across as a real woman -- in size and personality. She shares with her readers the parts of her life that were hard to bear. And then she shares the process she took to get through the though times. She shows how she learned to accept herself and find her own sense of style. She even has a list of 24 questions that help you learn about yourself, the life you lead, and the life you *want* to lead so that you can start to define your own sense of style.
