A slice of life.......2003-04-10
Admittedly, I'm a friend of Michael Mercer, however, I think this book does give one a slice of the expatriot experience in the aritist colony that is Todos Santos, Mexico. I want to see more writing from this group of writers. I like the range of backgrounds of the writers. I'd really like to see the incorporation of some local Mexican writers in to this writing group. I want to hear the experience of local writers about the ex-pate influence. Todos Santos seems to be a very happy place for locals and ex-pates alike.

Book Description
The early days of space travel - the tragic deaths, the explorers who disappeared without a trace, the many heroisms- were now relegated to a few pages in history textbooks. The Solar System, from Mercury out to the cometary Oort cloud, was as thoroughly domesticated and familiar as anyone's back yard. But other frontiers still beckoned, as distant as the farthest stars themselves, and humankind swarmed out across the galaxy at speeds many times that of light, but still only an amoeboid crawl in comparison to the vast breadth of the galaxy. And once again the statement by a largely-forgotten 20th century scientist was proven true: the universe is not only stranger than we imagine-it is stranger than we can imagine. Stories of interstellar voyagers confronting the infinite by: Gregory Benford, Eric Flint & Dave Freer, James P. Hogan, Debra Doyle & James MacDonald . . . and more.

What future is inherent in our now?.......2006-02-04
Cosmic Tales II: Adventures in Far Futures tells tales of humanity when it escapes the bounds of Sol system. Each story is an exploration of a trait that may define us as a species and how it could affect our lives once we reach beyond our Earth.
Cosmic Tales II contains six short stories and one non-fiction essay. It was refreshing to find that all the stories were strong and held my attention. "The Tree of Dreams" by James P. Hogan offers us a glimpse of explorers looking for worlds to conquer with consumerism and greed. Interestingly, the natives are not as docile and innocent as first suspected and some of the crew view the natives' lifestyle as better than the dog-eat-dog life they lead. Mark L. Van Name's "Bring Out the Ugly" gives us tantalizing hints of a man's past when he is hired to save the daughter of the head of a planetary corporation. This story has some interesting asides on the use of AI's in everyday home appliances. "On Suivi Point" by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald gives the reader a view of how much trouble two spacers can get into on shore leave without even trying. "Genie Out of the Bottle" was a frustrating story of a young man with more money than common sense getting in over his head with a 'sweet young girl' who wants power and money. He finally finds himself as he learns to care about others and to think for himself. This story also gives the readers some interesting ideas to consider about uplifting animals for our convenience.
Paul Chafe in "Botany Bay" gives an interesting twist on a murder mystery. A serial killer is stalking the colony and they need to find out who, before anyone else gets killed. The twist revealed in the story's title is that all the colonists are criminals sent to this planet as a second chance. They must work together to find the killer and determine what rules of law will be adopted for their colony and its future. The non-fiction essay was an overview of the science used as a basis for the story "Botany Bay".
In "Beyond Pluto" by Gregory Benford, we are at the edge of our solar system and life or something close to it has been found on Pluto. Two scientific expeditions work together to try to learn where the life-forms are coming from and are they related to the cascade of energy approaching our system.
This is a strong collection and one that is sure to please the reader who enjoys hard SF. There are good strongly drawn characters, well thought out plots, and ideas that you can think about for a long time after you finish the story. I know I'm still worried about what my washing machine might be telling other appliances about me.
Delightful Collection of Stories.......2005-02-20
Toni Weisskopf is the Executive Director at Baen books, one of the premier Science Fiction publishers. She also appears to be a SiFi fan and has been collecting short stories to anthologize. In this Cosmic Tales series she first collected a series of stories about Adventures in Sol System. Now she has collected stories set further out. As she says in the Introduction - I share with you stories about what happens when we escape the Sun's pull and explore the galazy, fulfilling our destiny.
About half of the authors come from the Baen stable of writers: James P. Hogan, Dave Freer, Eric Flint, Gregory Benford. Other writers are: Mark L. Van Name, Debra Doyle, James D. Macdonald, Paul Chafe.
The stories have a broad range, with the only common thread being that they are located outside the orbit of Pluto, outside the Oort Cloud where the comets live. Enjoyable reading.

When Gourmet magazine opened shop in 1941, it addressed a small epicurean audience. In those days, fine dining was French, seafood specialties always seemed to include cream and sherry, and game made the meal--or so the magazine preached. The bill of fare has changed since then, and fine dining now includes dishes from the world's four corners, commanded by a broad, food-aware audience. Over the years, Gourmet has chronicled all this, changing to reflect a wider, more democratized food scene that has also, paradoxically, raised the bar on what's expected of the average, too-busy cook. The Gourmet Cookbook is the most comprehensive of the magazine's recipe anthologies--a mega-tome offering more than 1,000 formulas drawn from Gourmet since its birth.
The statistics are indeed impressive: more than 100 hors d'oeuvre recipes; an equal number of vegetable dishes; 200 desserts--21 chapters in all, touching all courses and including stops at breakfast and brunch specialties; breads and crackers; plus sauces, salsas, and preserves. Included are recipes from Gourmet contributors like James Beard and Jean-Georges Vongericten, and hundreds of sidebars like "Salad Greens Primer" and "Blind Baking," all useful and informative. There are classic dishes like onion soup gratiné, gefilte fish, corn fritters, and peanut butter cookies; "new classics" such as fried calamari and spaghetti alla carbonara; and the "modern," including oatmeal brûlée with macerated berries and grilled lobster with orange chipotle vinaigrette--"every recipe you'd ever want," says the text, something of an understatement.
Cooks should know, however, that this is not a basic cookbook, despite its Noah's ark of formulas. Rather, it's a Gourmet cookbook, which means that, notwithstanding some rudimentary recipes, the focus is on the stylishly up-to-date (which is not to deny the excellence of the formulas), resulting, often, in refinements. Thus its recipe for mac and cheese calls for dijon mustard and panko; its beef stroganoff requires cremini mushrooms; its grilled chicken calls for brining; and so on. Recipes can also run to over 450 words, and require unusual ingredients. (A list of sources is provided.) Of all its chapters, those for sweets are the most immediately attractive.
For all the praise, though, there's one major goof. The recipe titles are printed in a light butter-yellow color, making them almost illegible. For many readers, this will be a deal-breaker; others will find it merely annoying. Should you own the book? For dedicated cooks and foodies the answer will be, How can I not? --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:
Best cookbook ever!.......2007-09-28
This is a must have for foodies. I love love love this cookbook. The best cookbook I have ever purchased.
Great price.......2007-09-02
A lot of the reviewers complain about the yellow titles, but I didn't find them a problem at all, the yellow is dark enough to make them readable for me.
Haven't used it yet, got one for my sister as we were always fans of Gourmet.
An Excellent Choice for Entertaining.......2007-08-24
When I first flipped through this cookbook, it seemed like it would be the perfect 'special occasion' cookbook. I cook almost every day, and I would not call myself boring or traditional either. I wouldn't even consider myself someone who is 'short on time' and in need of some kind of 'quickie' recipe. However, I will never come home on a Wednesday night and whip up a nice Pistachio-Crusted Arctic Char. This book is great--for special occasion cooking. I recently cooked a French dinner for my mother's husband. I followed the three recipies I chose word for word, and the meal was perfect--despite the fact that I had never made or even tasted the dishes before. It took me seven hours to make--but if you are going to spend hours slaving away at the stove to make a wonderful holiday meal for you family, you might as well make sure the result is worth the effort. This book ensures that all of your hard work will not go unappreciated. In addition, while some reviews seem to be negative about the layout of the book, if you simply use the index in the back instead of the rather general table of contents, you will find it more than user friendly.
Yummy Cookbook.......2007-08-01
Well, Reichl is wonderful so this had to be a great book but it is also simple and has loads of new ideas.
Solid recipes and good flow through the book.......2007-07-24
The book offers a good variety of options and is well organized for easy access to specific foods. I like the chef's comments attached to many of the recipes. I would love to compare to the other three books we ordered over a month ago from Amazon, but they still have not shipped. Book is very good, Amazon delivery performance is very bad on this order.

Gotta Love Gus the Dog, He is so Wise.......2006-06-03
I've had this book for years and I go to it about once a month or so for an idea. I particularly like the comments by Gus the Dog. He is so right when he says that "People become confused when they are all cooking together and having a good time." Gus thinks it's better to stand by the door and watch, because they will feed you sooner or later. That's good advice for all you arm chair chefs.
This book is chucky jammed full of delicious recipes from around the world and down the street. The neighborhood, Europe, Asia and more all between the pages of one cookbook, can't ask for more than that. But you get more here, because you get Jeff Smiths delicious sense of humor and his doggone good writing. This is so much more than a cookbook, it's good old fashioned entertainment as well. It's a must for any chef.

Good.......2006-01-22
I've been cooking from this book for over 10 years now, and I'm still sometimes surprised by the recipes I haven't tried yet. Just today I gave the Potato Gnocchi Liddia recipe to a friend. Not every recipe is a favorite in our household, but the Frug had never led us far astray.

Wonderful for Collectors and Resellers alike!.......2004-08-04
I originally got this book when I purchased a lot of Starr dolls off eBay. Not knowing much about Starr other than she was from Mattel, I went to my Barbie identification guides to learn more. Nothing. I went to Doll Collectors guides. Nada. Then I found this book. This was GREAT! It had the doll, her back story, interesting trivia, and extremely helpful pictures and detailed captions. I even found other Mattel dolls I had found here there and yonder listed in this book. So like a child with a blanket, I have taken to carrying the book around everywhere. It has joined my Barbie Field Guide and Barbie:A Visual Guide to the Ultimate Fashion Doll as the MUST-HAVES when I look for new find on eBay or when I'm listing dolls to resell.
Fabulously entertaining and educational.......2000-04-29
While this book does not contain all of Mattel's dolls between 1967 and 1997- it is great. The pictures are fantastic- tons of color pictures. Each doll featured has a picture and a detailed summary.Lots of the newer dolls from 80's to 90's that are just now becoming collectable. This is such a nice book to look at and gives values as well for reference. Most dolls are pictured in their original packaging.
Great info source for mattel fashion dolls!.......2000-04-05
Great info on so many mattel dolls... Celebrity dolls (from the osmonds to 90210), Barbie, Princess of Power (my favorite), Lady Lovely Locks, Disney Classics and so much more. All complete with pictures and detailed information. A must if you collect fashion dolls from this era.

Book Description
Young, Gifted, and Black is a unique joint effort by three leading African-American scholars to radically reframe the debates swirling around the achievement of African-American students in school. In three separate but allied essays, Theresa Perry, Claude Steele, and Asa Hilliard place students' social identity as African-Americans at the very center of the discussion. They all argue that the unique social and cultural position Black students occupy, in a society which often devalues and stereotypes African American identity, fundamentally shapes students' experience of school and sets up unique obstacles. And they all argue that a proper understanding of the forces at work can lead to practical, powerful methods for promoting high achievement at all levels. Theresa Perry argues that African-American students face dilemmas, founded in the experience of race and ethnicity in America, that make the task of achievement distinctive and difficult. (For instance: "How do I commit myself to achieve, to work hard over time in school, if I cannot predict when or under what circumstances this hard work will be acknowledged and recognized?") She uncovers a rich and powerful African- American philosophy of education, historically forged against such obstacles and capable of addressing them, by reading African-American narratives from Frederick Douglass to Maya Angelou. She carefully critiques the most popular theoretical explanations for group differences in achievement. And she lays out how educators today-in a postcivil rights era-can draw on theory and on the historical power of the African-American philosophy and tradition of education to reorganize the school experience of African-American students.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful, though stronger on philosophies than strategies.......2006-07-25
I'm currently researching strategies for successful SAT work with low scoring students. Having read the academically oriented "Black White Test Score Gap", I decided to pick this up to find some additional strategies for working with low scoring students.
This book is divided into three essays and they have three distinct focuses. Theresa Perry's essay is very philosophical. She argues that there is a literacy tradition in black America that is often overlooked as we seek solutions to educational problems. "Freedom for literacy and literacy for freedom" is a tradition that shows how in slavery times and the segregated 20th century we have seen literacy as a key for full citizenship. Perry looks at narratives to find common themes in stories that argue for literacy as a black value.
I found this essay helpful because I can recall my own awakenings reading "Roots" and "Autobiography of Malcolm X" where I felt more empowered and assertive as I realized that my struggles and frustrations were common to the black experience. I felt that the theory and philosophy of this essay was stronger than the solutions, however. I would also like to have seen how mathematical and technological literacy could have been incorporated into this theory.
Claude Steele's "Stereotype Threat" essay is an update on some things he's written in magazines and is a more accessible version of an essay that he authored in "Black-White Test Score Gap". I found this essay to be far more helpful than the more technical description of his work in "Black White Test Score Gap". Here he argues that we have to address self-imposed pressures of high scoring students to help them succeed in testing environments and help them work more efficiently. This articulation of his theory seemed to be aimed more for the educators applying his ideas than the psychologists assessing them. As a teacher, I felt included in the discussion.
Asa Hilliard's presence in this volume was peculiar for me. He's an Afrocentrist and uses the term "Africans" to describe black Americans. Personally, I don't like that term because I value the unique jazz and cultural contributions of black Americans over an afrocentric past. He details success stories at the elementary level and is highly critical of the educational literature. This essay bothered me because it did not offer much that I could use as a high school teacher. Also, this seemed to argue for "superteachers" without speaking to the supply and demand of the highly qualified and highly trained labor he seeks. Yes, it's good to detail how wonderful a school is that you consulted for and how these successes should be researched. This essay basically said "we need better teachers", but did not do enough to show me how we would get them or how he has unique training and empowerment models. I felt this was the weakest of the three essays although I'll probably look up some of the model schools and teachers he mentions at some point.
All in all, this is a good book for educators to read. I'd focus on Steele's essay and the first half of Perry's essay first and skim the second half of Perry and all of Hilliard second. Those who are more Afrocentrist and elementary educators will find Hilliard's essay more helpful than I did.
Decent book, I recommend it with qualifications.
3.5 stars.

srekcarc.......2005-05-23
There are a lot of lazy ignorant people in our society who believe that black people should be all accomodating and not be too complex, in other words, human. How sad for them. Hansberry was ofcourse a genius. Bless her short life and her work.
I Can Relate.......2002-11-18
I remember reading this book thinking that I could relate to the author perfectly well. Though I am not a playright, I do understand a lot of what she is saying. There should and will never be a borderline or a glass ceiling or anything else to hold me down. You are who you are regardless of what is . . . There is no turning back only that which is to be gained and won.
When I think of Lorraine Hansberry I think of a woman who achieved the impossible in an impossible time. She completed her plays with such intensity and flair . . . As if she lived and researched each every act.
Nevertheless, I feel that Hansberry was stating that to be "Young, gifted, and black," is clearly to be aware of who and what you are . . . and to take this knowledge of who and what you are and to run with it. Taking a chance when given a chance, or rather taking a chance and creating an opportunity with merely a bit of the gift that you had.
I will always remember what Thurgood Marshall, he basically stated that "He did the best with what he had." Is that being merely good or is that being the best. I believe that the concept of this book is not to be mistaken. I believe Hansberry is saying, "Hey sister, hold your head up high. It does not matter what this world thinks of you. It only merely matters about what you can do for yourself and your fellowman. Do you know your gifts? Hey write it down. You are worth perfecting."
Lorraine Hansberry did wonders in her lifetime she did so much for her community and her fellowman. My question to myself and others is . . . What about your gifts? Hey write them down. They are worth perfecting.
Young, gifted, and brilliant.......2001-12-03
I found this book in the library and fell in love with it instantly. The passages from Hansberry's plays and journal enteries were quite powerful- witty, yet moving. She truly had a gift for describing the human condition- AS IT IS, rather than how it "should be." However, I must admit to finding myself at a bit of a cultural disadvantage at times, as the author assumes that most readers will be familiar with African American lingo from the '50s. While some readers like myself may have difficulty understanding certain expressions, etc, the sharp overall messages and delightful writing style make this book both a learning experience and a pleasure to read. I hope others will gain as much from this book as I have.
Poignant and inspiring.......2001-11-22
Getting inside the head of such a great thinker is a wonderful opportunity. The only negative comment I could make about this book is that a few of the passages included from Hansberry's lesser-known plays were not as powerful as the passages from speeches, journals, and A Raisin in the Sun. It is tragic that the world lost a truly gifted and spirited writer at such a young age. If you enjoyed A Raisin in the Sun, you'll also find this a rewarding read.
Universal, Accessible, and Powerful!.......2001-04-25
I thought this was an absolutely beautiful book. Hansberry had such a gift for writing about the human spirit. I hope that the students who say they got nothing from reading this book come back to it as adults and give it another try. I found it to be inspiring. It will definitely join my list of favorites!
