Book Description
The first of Naipaul’s twelve novels tells of the meteoric rise and hilarious metamorphosis of Ganesh Ramsumair from failed primary schoolteacher and struggling masseur to author, revered mystic, peerless politician and the most popular man in Trinidad.
Customer Reviews:
Less than Nobel.......2007-10-06
My review of this book probably reflects more negatively on the reviewer than it detracts from the Nobel prize winning author, but 3 stars is all I could squeeze out. It was a nice low key whimsical tale, with pretty good character development, acquainting us with the simple, humorous, pretentious characters making up Trinidad Indian society. Ganesh's rise from a bumbling boy, to a sought-after mystic, to an important polititian, has some lessons in it I suppose (value of education, power of and hunger for spirituality, and the dulling of the spiritual by world, wealth, and fame). But this book did not leave me crying out "Nobel Prize!" (as did Pramoedian Ananta Toer's recently released books). A quick read, view of Trinidad culture, and a few chuckles. So not bad - maybe 3 1/2 stars.
Good.......2007-09-17
This novel tells the story of Ganesh Ramsumair in Trinidad. There is not much mystical or magical about this fellow, except, perhaps, that he is unique from all the others in the community. These are the trials and tribulations of someone not in a first world country but who knows that he wants more than the status quo. The way to go about this is to be a writer. Writers, he's told, are important and special.
A hefty portion of the novel describes how Ganesh goes through encounters with his father-in-law, his wife, his neighbor, his Aunt and others while insisting that he is a writer (although his writings are.... sparse... to say the least). The humor of the novel appears matter-of-factly during the conversations with Ganesh's friends and family and in the convoluted conclusions Ganesh reaches. The idea is to not take the book too seriously, although there are parts which depict the inauthenticity of Westernizing Eastern cultures.
Some readers too steeped in a rigid Western mindset might become frustrated with the novel. The characters are not 'dumb,' they are colorful and robust - willing to accept life as it comes and complaining only when complaining seems the right thing to do. Also, the inherent connection between Ganesh (as an individual) and his community is very clear. This is something else that might be challenging for some readers, since it is a somewhat diminished phenomenon in some cultures.
Overall, about 30 pages less and I would have given the book another star. The middle of the book bogs down a bit and stalls out. But I think this is Naipaul's first effort and as such it is very worthy. Readers who enjoy books about culture should be pleased.
A light and entertaining read.......2006-05-15
V.S. Naipaul's first book, The Mystic Masseur, transports the reader back in time to the pre WWII era in the quaint town of Fuente Grove in Trinidad. The book talks about Ganesh, who starts off as a directionless young boy still trying to figure out what to do with his life. Being one of the few people in the area with some literary exposure, he is revered by the locals as a pundit. He tries his hand at several things from teaching to massaging to a local medicine man to a famous politician.
The book is very vividly written and the narrative is smooth and fluent. The dialogue uses a native dialect to bring about a feel of the Carribean Islands. Overall a nice read that shows that with common sense, good intentions, luck and a little mischief anyone can change the world around them.
a GREAT read.......2006-01-29
This was the first Naipaul novel I read and I read it straight through in 2 days because it was so much fun. He really gives insight on how people live, think and interact, with great historical context, but without being heavy handed.
Nothing compares to his masterpiece, A House for Mr. Biswas, but if you don't have two weeks to read that one, read this one.
Great read...........2005-09-26
I just started the book, but it is very interesting and well written so far.

A fine read.......2002-07-18
I loved the same author's Yurt series, and hated her 'Voihma'. This one is more serious than the Yurt books, but basically of the same stamp. The world is different - instead of early medieval, this is late-medieval, and based in a warmer latitude. The characters are well-realised, and the story carries you along. Recommended.
Fantasy Grounded in History.......2000-01-26
Another fine work by a too-little-known author. Her fantasy world, like the real Middle Ages, has real religious passions. The growth and struggles of her characters are all the deeper in this context.
A Most Satisfying Book.......1998-01-30
The publisher's blurb almost put me off, but since I dote on the Yurt series, I decided to trust that I'd like this book by C. Dale Brittain--and with its first sentence, I knew I was going to enjoy it. Despite my complete lack of interest in the Middle Ages and the intrigues of that time, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I marvel at Brittain's ability to create so many characters I like! What a satisfying book! If only the next in the series were available now! I look forward to other books by the Brittain/Bouchard team and just wish I didn't have to wait for them.
A fun and exciting blend of fantasy and mystery.......1997-11-07
Fantasy author C. Dale Brittain brought us the thoroughly enjoyable "Wizard of Yurt" series. In Count Scar, her newest novel, she joins with Robert Bouchard to weave a tale of magic, faith, and mystery in the barony of Pyrefixade. Memorable characters, exciting action, humor, and the trademark Brittain mystery plot make this a great novel for all fantasy fans and indeed, anyone who enjoys good fiction. Brittain and Bouchard kept me guessing throughout the entire book. If you're looking for a fun, enjoyable story with a touch of the "whodunit", I wholeheartedly recommend "Count Scar".

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Talk your way to it.
A novel way to keep things going, and keep things together. Not your baic engineering, but a whole lot of chanting and stuff. Oh, and the Doctor has to face off with the Master, with the usual groovy companion, for the fate of that whole ball of wax cosmos sort of thingo.
Save the world or die trying.......2005-05-31
Quite a good story. The Doctor is up against the Master again and this time pays quite a price for his victory. He manages to save the world, actually the whole universe, but the cost is great for him and the Logopolitans. Aldric is his companion in this one, although he picks up Nyssa from Traken again, and adds Tegan.
The Master shows up early on and right away starts killing people by shrinking the to the size of dolls. The Doctor and Aldric accidentally bump into him on their way to Logopolis to get the TARDIS's chameleon circuit fixed. From there it is all downhill for the Doctor and his allies as the Master stays a step ahead, right up until the end, when the Doctor finally wins out.
I loved the story and it moved along quickly. A short book as all these novelizations seem to be, and easily read in one sitting. Enjoy!
When Novelizations Mattered.......2003-12-28
I first read the novelization of "Logopolis" when I was in the sixth grade. At that point, all I knew about "Doctor Who" was from the few 5th Doctor episodes I'd seen on PBS. I borrowed the book from a classmate who was trying to explain how the 5th Doctor came to be. Said classmate is now a life insurance agent in South Dakota and hasn't had any contact with "Doctor Who" in fifteen years. The book he loaned me, however, remains one of my enduring favorites.
The novelizations of the "Doctor Who" TV adventures were an unusual breed: for many fans, they served as (at worst) a replacement for, or (at best) an improvement on the series itself. The condensing of a TV script into 120 pages gave rise to a peculiar richness of language that laid the groundwork for a dozen years (and counting) of original "Doctor Who" novels.
Reading the back cover of the "Logopolis" novelization reveals a host of words you don't find any more in books aimed at 12 year-olds. "Precipitated", for instace. The opening paragraph of the story is unusually literate, presaging the Fourth Doctor's death: "Events cast shadows before them...".
The story's condensation is most keenly felt in author Bidmead's prose: a lot of on-screen dialogue is converted into plain text. This keeps the narrative moving without turning the novelization into a mere transcript, but also preserves the richness of the original script. In some instances, the story improves from the condensation: most of the shots of Tegan and Adric running up and down the TARDIS corridors have been omitted; instead, we're given a scene were Adric reads from "Paradise Lost". The Doctor introduces Adric to the TARDIS's "logic circuits", a visually striking piece of equipment never seen on-screen.
Best of all is the restaging of the death scenes. When the Monitor dies on-screen, it's done through a straight visual effect, and doesn't make all that much sense. In the novelization, Bidmead makes the demise more graphic, in a manner that couldn't have been realized on television.
The Doctor's death, too, is improved. On TV, he climbs along a tilting catwalk on a telescope high above the ground, and is knocked over the edge by an explosion of sparks from a cable he's unplugged. In the book, however, he falls from the catwalk first, and is left clinging to the cable for support. By unplugging the cable he effectively commits suicide; this adds dramatic heft to his final choice and turns the Doctor into, if possible, an even more heroic figure than he was on TV.
Much of the relevance of the "Doctor Who" novelization has faded with time: video and DVD have made the stories more accessible than they were in the 1970s and '80s; the fan base has grown up and no longer needs to read books that are 120 pages long. _Logopolis_, however, in spite of a few instances of purple prose and some clunky similes, retains a poetry distinct from the TV story from which it was adapted, and thus still bears reading today.
The last Fourth Doctor story.......2001-01-07
The Doctor materialises the TARDIS by one of the last police boxes in England. His intention is to obtain the measurements of the real one to assist in repairing the TARDIS' chameleon circuit. But little do he and Adric realise that someone had arrived earlier, and an elaborate trap is about to be sprung...
'Logopolis' is a very big story, featuring an enormous threat to the entire universe. The Doctor gains two companions (Nyssa, who first appeared in 'The Keeper of Traken', and Tegan), faces an old foe, and gives his life to save the universe.
The story is quite clever, tying in with many events of the seventeenth season, and setting in motion the first story of the next season.
The adaptation is by Christopher Bidmead, the author of the original script, and is quite worthwhile as well. Not everything makes perfect sense, but there is nothing which detracts from the enjoyment which the story should give you.

Kathy Colton can't stand her brother, Brett. Her family talks as if he were perfect! All Kathy knows for sure is that Brett is dead. He died of leukemia when he was sixteen and she was only two. But when Kathy turns sixteen, she discovers her brother's hidden journal - a journal written especially for her - and learns about the brother she never knew. At the same time, Kathy is mortified by an assignment to tutor the popular high school quarterback Jason West, a football jock who, even worse, is a Mormon. Author Kay Lynn Mangum brilliantly weaves the dual stories of a dying brother and a coming-of-age sister who learn the importance of loving our family and our friends and nurturing our faith.

a story which made me end up with tears........2007-06-13
This story is a master piece; it was one of the stories which held tight around me until I had finished the story. (Therefore I had read within 24 hours.)
On Kathy's 16th birthday, she is given a diary which was written by her brother 'Brett' who had died 15 years ago. And this diary was secretly written for only Kathy. From that day on as she reads the diary, everything around her changes as she learns the importance of loving family and friends and nurturing faith.
Through out the story, I just kept on weeping. I seriously cried through out the story. Because I was able to sense how painful, Brett mentally and psychically, had been going through the disease called "leukemia" by him explaining through his secret diary. Also from his diary, he had explained how much he had loved Kathy and the strong friendship bond between him and his best friend Kelly. When I was reading it, it made me cry but also laugh when he was explaining funny incidents that Kathy had done when she was a baby.
It was a very clever idea of the author of using a diary, which
showed Brett's point of view in a very strong way. Kathy's point of view was also strongly shown through out the story, as she was the main character.
The general story line was simple but such heart warming (that made me cry for whole night) and seriously I would say, it's definitely beautifully told.
What I liked about this story was that even though, there was romance (between Kathy and Jason, the popular high school quarter back) there were no events rating 19,(only had kissing) which was really good, because I was really sick of stories which only contained about betrayal, sex and drugs. And those kind of stories at the end made me more moody and depressed.
This story was simply one of the best; from this book, I was able to learn the great importance of friendship, family and trust between person you love. If I do reread the book, then I am sure that I will be crying with tears...but also laugh at how Kathy's confused feeling towards Jason was described. (which is totally cute)
I 100% recommend you guys, who are reading my review to read this book!
The Secret Journal of Brett Colton
An all-time Favorite!.......2007-04-23
After reading twilight, i didn't think i'd find another book that i just loved! But after i read the secret journal i changed my mind. Anyone who is looking for a genuinely good book will have found it after reading the secret journal. I loved the characters in the book as well as how we can all relate to at least one of them. This book is inspirational and uplifting while keeping your interest in the sweetest love story! Holy cow, I loved this book!
A bestseller for a reason.......2007-01-30
This is one of the best-written LDS fiction books available for teens
(and anyone else who likes a good read!) today. The premise of the
book (a sister learns about the brother she never knew through his
journal) is clever and well-executed. Additionally, the character of
Kathy is a dynamic one, evolving from a disgruntled, slightly selfish
teenager into one who cares about others and who is able to reach out
of her comfort zone (especially for the boy she has a crush on--the
love story is a very fun part of the novel)! This evolution is
believable and heart-warming, and teens will love the Jason/Kathy
romance as well.
Mangum's second novel, A Love Like Lilly, is also well-written and a
great read. And rumor has it that she has a third, highly
anticipated book in the works... I purchased both of her earlier novels and will certainly buy the next one as well!
Refreshing!.......2007-01-30
I've read a lot of LDS YA books over the years. (I'm not a teen, but I'm a writer and I have kids. So I really like keeping up with this genre.)
Most of the books in this genre sound like they could have been written by the same person. The Secret Journal of Brett Colton is a real exception. I actually read it some time ago and I'm just now getting around to reviewing it. I recently gave it as a gift to a niece turning 12 and I was reminded of how great it is.
This author has definitely spent time around teens. The dialogue is very engaging and utterly believable. It's rare to lose yourself in YA fiction because the authors are typically adults that wouldn't know a high school cafeteria if it bit them in the fannie. For me that's where Secret Journal excels. It feels 100% authentic.
It's very refreshing to read some new LDS YA authors. (Ally Condie is another to watch out for.) Books like theirs give a real boost to the entire market and will inspire even more books! Keep them coming!
I haven't heard whether there is a sequel on the way, but I'd be first in line. (But my kids will have to wait for me to read it first!)
WOW WOW WOW.......2007-01-23
The Secret Journal of Brett Colton
By: Kay Lynn Mangum
One of the worst feelings in life can be the emotion that comes with being excluded from a memory. A memory that is filled with so much feeling that nobody in your family can forget it. These are the emotions that were flowing so rapidly threw Kathy Colton-main character in the highly acclaimed book "The Secret Journal of Brett Colton"- whenever her family brought up Brett. Kathy is a girl at the sensitive age of sixteen going though her brother Brett's tragedy over and over again through her family. Brett died of leukemia when Kathy was at the young age of two. Now fourteen years later she finds Brett's secret journal written only for her eyes to see. After this turn of events Kathy starts growing closer to the brother she barely knew and the family she loved to ignore.
This best selling LDS novel can bring hope to the lost and happiness to the cheerless. As Kathy reads Brett's journal she learns about his amazing heart and search for the truth of god. This touching journal ties into Kathy's hectic life by helping her grow closer to the one man who can bring her the truth. Jason West a football jock is in Kathy's Honors English class and in desperate need of a tutor. When Kathy is forced into helping Jason she gains more love and joy than she has ever had. His sweet heart and loving personality draws Kathy into his world of the church. Though many problems and trails coming into Kathy's life she always seems to prevail. I would recommend this book to anyone willing to take a chance on a girl searching for the truth. It touches lives and changes hearts. In my opinion it is one of the best LDS books ever written.

scrumptuous cookies.......2001-04-12
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. Mrs. Witty's instructions are remarkably clear, clear enough for a supervised child to follow. For the beginner, she goes into an explanation of how to work with, store and select ingredients and discusses which kitchen equipment is necessary for cookie baking. Nevertheless, this book should satisfy the seasoned baker. Her Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies are one of my favorites and when I brought in Mocha Walnut Chocolate Chip Cookies to work, someone suggested these cookies were good enough to market.
Terrific cookies.......1999-12-12
These are reliable recipes for great cookies. We are especially fond of the mocha walnut (pecan) chocolate chip cookies, pecan pie squares, toffee tops and hazelnut macaroons. I don't make them any particular size so can't vouch for the instructions on "maximonsters," but I have consistently tasty results.

This book marks the introduction of visitors to the park along with construction and aerial photos. You will find photos of Matterhorn, E.P Ripley, Walt Disney, Fess Parker, Sleeping Beauty Castle, Skull Rock, Rainbow Ridge, Casa de Fritos to list just a few of the shots. Both the first book ("A Photographers Life With Disney Under Construction") and the third book ("Disney Years seen Through a Photographers Lens") are also available.
Customer Reviews:
I loved this picture book........2003-09-23
This book is primarily a picture book with short decriptions that gives a fascinating look at the world's most famous theme park before it was a park. It's filled with black and white photos of Walt Disney's Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. as it was being constructed along with a few after its opening. The photographer, Mel Kirkpatrick, was given unfettered access through the entire construction of the park and he captured some amazing and unique photos. You'll see Disneyland go from orange tress and mounds of dirt being moved around, right through various stages of construction for some of the famous landmarks such as Sleeping Beauty's Castle and Main Street USA. Some superb aerial shots are included. The captions for the pictures are short and informative with one or two errors, which unless you're a true Disneyland buff you won't notice. For anyone who has ever been to Disneyland and felt the "magic", this is great look into how that magic was constructed.

Hot on the bleeding heels of Mankind's Have a Nice Day! comes another memoir by a bad-guy character World Wrestling Federation fans love to hate, edited by the same prose coach, the clever Jeremie Ruby-Strauss (and coauthored by Joe Layden). Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. the Rock--who calls himself "the People's Champion," affects an arched eyebrow to convey entertaining menace, and coins catch phrases like a standup comic--gives you plenty of colorful, jumbled action photos and the growling accounts of staged mayhem that made Mankind's book a bestseller. But his story is more interesting than that of Mankind, his occasional ring rival. The noisy action chapters alternate with passages of more reflective conventional autobiography: the Rock is a third-generation pro wrestler, and his book amounts to a history of the sport. His grandpa, High Chief Peter Maivia, was a Samoan important enough to be buried in Diamond Head's crater, and his dad, Rocky Johnson, was George Foreman's sparring partner and the first African American World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental champ. The Rock is candid about the battles his family faced outside the ring: the marriage-testing road lifestyle, his dad's most important win (over the bottle), and the author's own dangerous temper. There's something touching about the Rock's unpromising debut in his uncle Tonga's old trunks, in his reverence for his elders--and something scary about his reaction when he thinks people lack such respect.
What, you say? You'd rather hear about the Rock's "schmozz" (free-for-all) with Mankind, or Faarooq and the interracial Nation of Domination, or that Budweiser-popping piece of trailer trash Stone Cold Steve Austin, or the Undertaker, whose skin is "the color of bad meat"? You want to hear how he started out sleeping on a pungent mattress retrieved from a garbage dump and wound up wearing Versace shirts and chatting up Gennifer Flowers on TV at WrestleMania XIV? You crave the secrets of the Frankenstein, the Gorilla Position, Jake the Snake, and Mankind's Mandible Claw (a dirty sock he shoves down opponents' throats)? That's all here, too. Just hop in the ring--the Rock will show you around. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
The Rock says. . . "Know your damn role--and shut your mouth!" But that simple catch-phrase, embraced by the millions ñand the millions--of The Rock's fans, can't begin to capture the spirit and larger-than-life personality of the most electrifying man in sports-entertainment."
In this action-packed, revealing and outrageously funny memoir, World Wrestling Federation Superstar The Rock recounts his life in and out of the ring with unapologetic honesty and inimitable style. From his boyhood days traveling around the world with his father (professional wrestler Rocky Johnson) to his years as a football player at the University of Miami to his meteoric rise through the ranks of the Federation, The Rock Says. . .chronicles in vivid detail the life story of one of sports-entertainment's most innovative and best-loved personalities.
The Rock recalls his injury-plagued career at Miami and a subsequent foray to the Great White North, where he discovered that in Canada being a professional football player is not exactly a glamorous life. After a few months of sleeping on putrid, stained mattresses that he dug out of the garbage and subsisting on nothing but plain spaghetti, "D.J." ditched his cleats forever and set his sights on the path of his father and grandfather--wrestling.
Performing first in the minors as plain old Dwayne Johnson, then as "Flex Kavana" and later as "Rocky Maivia," he quickly became one of the World Wrestling Federation's hopefuls. But no matter how he tried to get over with the fans, the stadiums greeted him with chants of "Rocky sucks! Rocky sucks!" He then adopted the brash persona of The Rock--a snorting, spitting, snotting, swearing son-of-a-bitch with the soul of a smart-ass comic and the body of an Adonis--and he found his true calling as the "People's Champion."
The Rock will take fans on a guided tour of big-time professional wrestling, a highly competitive business in which a handful of gifted and lucky performers dominate, and all others dream of a moment in the spotlight. He provides a breathtaking, minute-by-minute account of Wrestle Mania, the Super Bowl of pro wrestling, including an intimate backstage look at rehearsals with his opponent, Stone Cold Steve Austin. And he discusses in heartfelt detail the loss of his friend and co-worker, Owen Hart.
Filled with genuinely touching stories of love and strife, hilarious anecdotes, inside accounts of an industry whose machinations have long been shrouded in secrecy and dozens of previously unpublished photographs from The Rock's personal collection, The Rock Says. . .is--as The Rock himself might put it--"the coolest thing since the other side of the pillow if you smell what The Rock is cookin'."

Great Wrestler, And Entertainer..But The Book Falls Short.......2007-09-23
I love the Rock as that character he created himself, and Dwyane Johnson who has definitely crossed over as from wrestler to decent actor. However the book is good but it is not great as I hoped. Too much going in and out of character, at first it is hilarious...But after a few several times it is hard to take him serious and just confusing. If there is a great book to read from wrestlers, read Triple H's approach to a better body and Ric Flair's book. They are upfront real life stories and opinions that are genuine. I loved the Rock Says for the first few chapters and for the comedy he put into it..But bouncing around back and forth from character back to Dwayne Johnson just seemed Immature and had me lost.
charming, charismatic and intelligent.......2007-01-22
I enjoyed reading this book that I bought for someone else. I don't usually read biographies but The Rock managed to elevate WWF/WWE in the too brief minute-long appearances he made before he went on to make THE MUMMY movies. It's no surprise that he was so attractive onscreen that he was soon offered his own starring role in THE SCORPION KING. He's so hilarious. I hope he ends up in everything including Xmen and DC films.
Now here is an ex-CFL Lineman / former Pro Wrestler I can look up to..........2006-09-25
Bill Goldberg, you musclehead, this is how
it's done! Former CFL Lineman and Wrestler
Dwayne Johnson, black, Hawai'ian-Samoan, is
one of the up-and-coming action screen heroes
that has made it. I can't wait to see his
movie about King Kamehameha, when it gets done.
Johnson, unlike Goldberg, is grateful for eve-
rything he's achieved and not being selfish
like Bill, who it's all about him, is giving
back. Also, unlike Goldberg, his movie roles
are getting better! Way to go Dwayne!
Know your role and shut this book.......2006-07-18
Good god, where do I begin? This book is awful. Between reading about his boring college days, his being handed a wrestling contract because of his family, and his attempts at being funny I actually feel stupid for hanging with this travesty until the end. To make matters worse, he starts writing in character and to call it annoying would be like calling world war II a minor scuffle. If you value your time, money, and sanity, just move along.
The Rock says;.......2006-06-21
This is one of da best wrestling books that I've ever read. This book talks about The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson growing up as an average kid with his samoan mom and african american dad.He develops a passion for wrestling at a young age. Then it talks about the Rock in middle school where he was ganged and beat up by a bunch of different guys until one day his dad came and they flew off and the Rock gave them a beating and offered to fight any of them one on one. Then the book just jumps around a little bit it talks about how he had sex at 14teen with an 17 year old chick(I give the Rock his props for laying down another girl.....in the grass too),how he met his wife at an early age(she is 3 years older than him),when he played football for the CFL(Canadian Football League)but was cut about a year later after an back injury. Then when he joined the WWF in 1996 as Rocky Mavia(a combination of his Dad's first name in wrestling and his granddads last name in wrestling)and when he got booed every day during the next couple of months even though he was a good guy. Then when he left and made his heel return in late August of 1997 as The Rock and joined The Nation. Then its pretty much The Rock speaking in 3rd person as The Rock after that and he briefly touches on Owens passing and well thats bout it!
