Book Description

Recently discovered by the estate of Jack Kerouac, Orpheus Emerged chronicles the passions, conflicts, and dreams of a group of bohemians searching for truth while studying at a university. Written shortly after the iconic Beat author met Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Lucien Carr, and others in and around Columbia University, the story showcases the emerging core of the Beat Generation. Orpheus Emerged is a unique portrait of an artist as a young man and shows a writer in the process of finding the voice that would eventually express the spirit of his contemporaries.

4 out of 5 stars Wholeness plus Vision.......2006-05-10

A literary artefact that is intriguing as it reveals a writer at the beginning of his career, concerned with topics and issues that Kerouac would explore for the rest of his life. Although not in the familiar `spontaneous prose' style and endless stream of consciousness, often taken as difficult to follow and understand by some readers, this novella is written in the third person and well structured. As it is a short piece, the characters are not fleshed-out as they could be, which is really only possible in a full-length novel. That said, however, the two lead characters, Michael and Paul, are developed enough to sustain the plot. Overall, Orpheus is an absorbing tale about the nature of the artist or poet in their search for truth and purity of artistic vision.

Kerouac's Orpheus is the merging of two types of individuals, archetypes if you will: Michael is the tortured genius, with an imagination conducive to writing poetry, however, he is so serious and self absorbed, single minded, that he is incapable of being happy. A young man with a fine-tuned conscience, when he transgresses, he feels tremendous guilt and wallows in self-pity. Michael's relationships with the older woman, Maureen, lacks spark, and his affaire with Maria, falls flat because Michael cannot feel true love for himself or anybody else.

Paul is Michael's opposite, a roving poet-vagabond, in love with knowledge and life. Kerouac characterizes him as a genius of love and life. Paul's actions are spontaneous, humorous and driven by a devil-may-care attitude to just about everything. One day, after an altercation with Michael, he disappears for a week, and tells his friend's that he has been "Lying on the wet grass eating only fruit", which personifies the carefree, romantic wandering poet.

Written during that early time at Columbia University, when the young Kerouac first meets Alan Ginsberg and William Burroughs, we can perceive these men in some of the characters in Orpheus: enthusiastic bohemian types, learning philosophy, writing poetry and prose, listening to Brahms and drinking copious amounts of wine.

The novel ultimately is about the artist/man in search of a genuine aesthetic vision a `new vision' and the attainment of wholeness as the artist/man - there is a merging of types, and the success of this goal is the attainment of `wholeness plus vision' the `ideal' of the true artist.

This novella was by no means a disappointment, because, although a young work, Kerouac and his life long concerns are all included here.

Recommended to all Kerouac readers and students.

4 out of 5 stars Jack, Emerged.......2005-08-07

Sadly, it's been over a year since I read any Kerouac. Whenever I walk into a new library or used book store I judge them on how much Kerouac they carry. This tells me how intelligent they are. If there is a boatload of Kerouac on the shelves, every novel they could possibly have ordered, I know the people running the show know what is going on. If there are a few random books on the shelf, for instance, one copy of Good Blonde and one copy of On the Road, I know they are bordering on clueless.

The latter would be why I picked up this book, which is no reflection on the book, but to be honest I may not have chosen this one if they had some others I was itching for on the shelves. There were about three to chose from, and this is what I brought home.

"Orpheus Emerged" was written when he was in college, having just met some of his closest friends and starting to really discover himself and the art/music/words that surrounded him. It has the same undertones as his other books...fast paced dialogue, incoherent interactions at parties, hard pressed obsession towards poetry and its territory.

Although the women pose as ornaments, just as in his other novels, they seem to take on more importance in the way of having effect on the men they are involved with and the lives they are a part of. You don't learn much about them, as usual, but their effects are easily outlined.

I hesitate to say that Jack would fall short of much but this book might be one of the few examples of a lack of prose. The dialogue is purely colloquial while the story has more premeditation than would otherwise be expected. It's a short, enjoyable read and it is fun to see the beginning of his progress. I would say this book is more for someone who has already declared their love, rather than a first time reader. You can sense the potential in it, like the foundation for what is to come.

"Those books!", a character named Paul exclaims, "If only I had time to read them, and more. This morning, after I lost my job, I went to the University Library itself, and do you know, there were hundreds of thousands of books there I honestly felt I should read! And the ideas that rush through my mind. The impatience I feel! The time running off like sand. Ah...."

Yeah, Paul....I know what you mean. My thoughts, on paper, written by the genius himself. When his talent was just a seed planted in the soil of this novella.

1 out of 5 stars It's so bad its..........2005-03-03

I've heard it said by a writer that she `writes out' all her ego & mind junk in pages of burnable crap before sitting down to attempt a real book. I think this also applies to beginning a life as a writer. This novella is the product of such mind junk which should have been treated as such & burned at completion. Unfortunately for Kerouac it wasn't & if he's not blissfully unaware of it being flogged on the public market I'm sure he's squirming in his Golden Eternity as people read this laughable pretentious little book. But to be fair, he was only 23 when he wrote it & I'd give him points for at least structuring words into a story. The writing is awkward & uncomfortable; the characters affected, witless & embarrassing espousing pompous philosophies that make little sense; their movements & expressions unnatural; the plot transparent from the beginning. In a way all this makes for a very entertaining read. I could see it in my minds eye as a really bad movie played out by B grade actors. Fortunately Kerouac learnt from his mistakes & removed all these flaws from his later writing.

The Digital version is worth having. The story is the same but the medium is interesting; in fact one of the most interesting digital books I've seen. Each page is laid out differently, often with varied fonts & background pictures & includes hyperlinks to information about the books his characters pretentiously refer to. It's quite entertaining to read. It includes a fun interactive timeline & biographical bits & pieces about him & the beats. A let down was the fact that the multimedia hyperlinks promising audio & video of Kerouac via the internet led to dead pages.
Can the digital CD save the book? It depends on what you value. If you're looking for a good Kerouac story or looking to find your first book by the man, forget it. If you're aiming at completing your Kerouac collection, & filling out the `missing years', then it's a must. It'll make you feel better as a budding writer too. As Robert Creeley said in his introduction, "There will never be a moment like this one". If he means `another' moment like this one, then we can all be thankful.

5 out of 5 stars So pretentious and arty, it's fun.......2004-09-24

"Orpheus Emerged" is, like the bulk of Jack Kerouac's work, about a bunch of "bohemians" getting really trashed all the time
and beating the hell out of each other to prove how passionate they are. The other reviewers who claim that Jack Kerouac advanced somehow or became a better writer are simply wrong. "Orpheus Emerged" is all one needs to read to understand Jack's ever present "on the edge" mentality. And I found it enjoyable. One character (we might as well call him Burroughs, since that's who he was) stands out among this seriously jaded crowd of people as the only one with guts enough to adhere to his somewhat loopy and wild notions of life. He constantly quotes Rimbaud among the most dismal scenes, which I found inspiring and pretentious at the same time. The women in Kerouac's works are exceptionally strong and, paradoxically put up with the worst kind of men imaginable. This is exhilarating in the same way as "Fight Club" is exhilarating: so over the top and doe eyed rebellious that one has to love it. Anyone who doesn't wax nostalgic while reading this never had a good time. Kick back, get your beret and black coffee, and crack it open.

1 out of 5 stars A poor introduction to Kerouac.......2004-06-23

Orpheus Emerged was the first book written by Jack Kerouac that I have read. It was, sadly, a great disappointment. Lacking prior knowledge of Kerouac's life story, I found the book uninteresting; the characters lacked depth, the writing style was spare, and the ending was predictable. Had I known something of the poets and writers whom Kerouac was attempting to portray, as well as his life story, I'm sure the book would have been more interesting. However, with no prior knowledge, reading about a group of stuffy, pretentious college students who take themselves entirely too seriously truly did not hold my interest. I still plan to read On the Road given that it is something of a classic; I can only hope it is better than Orpheus Emerged.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Genius in ascent.......2001-12-04

The first two volumes in this series are fascinating looks at Sturgeon's development, well worth reading for those who are already fans of his. The third is where Sturgeon really starts to hit his stride, though, and this fourth volume is the first that I can wholeheartedly recommend to those previously unfamiliar with his work. Not every story here is superb; some are a bit dull, and some are overlong and predictable. But there's enough excellent material here to make it a solid introduction to Sturgeon's work, and the fascinating end-notes on each story by Paul Williams will make you wonder why other authors' complete-works collections can't be as thoroughly researched or as interestingly annotated. "Maturity," the first story here, is a masterpiece in the old sense of the word: it marks Sturgeon's transition from journeyman to master, while prefiguring _Flowers for Algernon_ (and predating it by a good 20 years). Other high points of this collection include the non-fantastical "A Way Home," the horror story "The Professor's Teddy Bear," the hilarious "Tiny and the Monster," and "Thunder and Roses," which is still relevant after 55 years.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......1999-06-13

Four volumes in and no clunkers yet, this guy had something special . . . and his Hugo and Nebula winning short story is still about thirty years away. Wow. If you've been following along all this time let me just say that this volume will give you more pleasures than any writer had any right to give you, most writers have a couple truly amazing short stories within them and while not everything Sturgeon wrote was genius the sheer amount of good stuff here is simply astounding. "Thunder and Roses" has to be one of the most humane stories ever written and others like "There is No Defense" or "The Professor and the Teddy Bear" (if it doesn't scare you, you must not have a pulse) stand up remarkably well. Again, you owe it to get every volume of this series and save it for the generations to come, we have so few literate writers these days and those few that we have deserve to be remembered and enjoyed. Sturgeon is one. Read him.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another alltime GREAT.......1999-02-26

This guy knew how to write about love, in all of it's phases, yet never or rarely descended into mawkishness. And a lot of his considerable output is classic. Buy it if you have to skip lunch for a week. If you've never read Sturgeon before, you're in for a treat, language of a grace and power to rival Bradbury and a way of moving along jauntily that compares with Henry Kuttner (Lewis Padgett) and Alfred Bester.

Per Hiero Desteen was a priest, a telepath -- and a highly trained killer. Together with his great riding moose and the young bear who was his friend, he was on an extraordinary mission. For this was five thousand years after the holocaust known as The Death. Now the evil Brotherhood of the Unclean was waging all-out war against the few remnants of normal humanity, determined to wipe out all traces of its emerging civilization. Hiero's task was to bring back a lost secret of the ancients that might save the humans. But his path lay through the very heart of the territory ruled by the Unclean and their hordes of mutated, intelligent, savage beast followers. And the Unclean were waiting for him!

3 out of 5 stars Decent Fantasy Style Post Apocalyptic Sci-Fi.......2006-04-12

          Hiero's Journey (1973) by Sterling Lanier - 275 pages - rating: 7.5/10

Adventurous journey across post apocalyptic North America ( including many Canadian references ) reminiscent of classic odyssey style tale. Hiero meets and picks up several interesting characters along the way as he heads towards an uncertain goal while battling numerous evil creatures of both human and animal origin. Jungles, the high seas and swamp settings keep the backdrop ever changing. He even hooks up along the way with a tasty young female morsel with a shockingly significant age differential.

The writing style flows smoothly but there are several uncommon words that would require most of us to consult a dictionary. Otherwise a highly enjoyable and frequently exciting story.

          An absolute must read!

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-07-25

"Hiero's Journey" is a great book, and would make a pretty darn cool movie. Mr. Lanier is quite creative, especially with his ideas on what sort of civilization might emerge from the ashes of a nuclear conflict (a semi-republic centered on monasteries in western Canada, where the damage might have been less). Some of the creatures that Hiero encounters on his journey, such as the Dweller in the Mists, are really cool.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST.......2004-08-02

I first read this book in 1981 and must confess to have reread it several times since then. It is one of tbe best written of this particular genre I have come across. There is a little something for everone in it. The story line is fastinating, character developement excellent and it is quite difficult to put down after the first page is read. I highly recommend this one.

                    Book Description

"The trick to cooking is that there is no trick." ––Mario Batali

The only mandatory Italian cookbook for the home cook, Mario Batali's MOLTO ITALIANO is rich in local lore, with Batali's humorous and enthusiastic voice, familiar to those who have come to know him on his popular Food Network programs, larded through about 220 recipes of simple, healthy, seasonal Italian cooking for the American audience.

Easy to use and simple to read, some of these recipes will be those "as seen" on TV in the eight years of "Molto Mario" programs on the Food Network, including those from "Mediterranean Mario," "Mario Eats Italy," and the all–new "Ciao America with Mario Batali." Batali's distinctive voice will provide a historical and cultural perspective with a humorous bent to demystify even the more elaborate dishes as well as showing ways to shorten or simplify everything from the purchasing of good ingredients to pre–production and countdown schedules of holiday meals. Informative head notes will include bits about the provenance of the recipes and the odd historical fact.

Mario Batali's MOLTO ITALIANO will feature ten soups, thirty antipasti (many vegetarian or vegetable based), forty pasta dishes representing many of the twenty–one regions of Italy, twenty fish and shellfish dishes, twenty chicken dishes, twenty pork or lamb dishes and twenty side dishes, each of which can be served as a light meal. Add twenty desserts and a foundation of basic formation recipes and this book will be the only Italian cooking book needed in the home cook's library.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent recipes.......2007-09-16

I just made polenta with salted cod and it's extremely addictive; I am on my third bowl. Some readers complained that it has too many recipes with "odd" ingredients. This book does have many recipes with octopus and squid and anchovies, and sardines. I think "odd" ingredients is what makes this book stand out. This is the kind of stuff I absolutely love to eat. And yes, they eat octopus and squid and fresh anchovies in Italy , not just meat balls and spaghetti.

If you want just standard meatball, then this book is not for you. But if you want to try something new, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Molto Italiano is a winner!.......2007-08-16

You're going to have fun with this book...it is colorful, illustrative, detailed and above all, the recipes (and there are many of them) are simple to make!

The risottos are flavorful and Mario's recipe for Besciamela (Béchamel sauce) is the most tasty version I've ever had. Sure, several of the recipes are not for dieters but for those special occasions, date nights or weekends when you have more time, give these a try. This book is the perfect choice for those chefs who deem themselves experimental and are willing to step out of their cooking comfort zone every once in a while....enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Great book, a little complicated.......2007-07-27

The book is great, but it's not full of quick and easy dishes. Some of the appetizers are a little easier, but they still don't use run-of-the-mill ingredients. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are clear and concise. The fish section is a little outside of what I would consider cooking, as most dishes serve the fish whole (with the head, fins, etc...).

5 out of 5 stars The Best cook book that I have ever owned.......2007-05-13

This book is so Mario... simple easy recipes that resulting in spectacular dishes...they plate just like at Babbo... ok, well almost... I find myself reaching for this book every Friday for our Bocce Ball dinners... Molto Bene!

                    5 out of 5 stars 'Molto' indeed!.......2007-04-05

Caveat: This book is NOT for those who aren't already comfortable in the kitchen or willing to have a go at something more complicated. This book is NOT primarily for those looking to whip up a quick 'Italian dish' after work. Yes, this book is weighty....but yes, this book is VERY worth it if you are looking to take your basics to the next level. I adore that fact Mario uses the authentic ITALIAN names for the dishes. It's evidant Mario's book references from his restaurants, but that's what I enjoy about it. It's full of easy to read recipes divided nicely into workable sections, and it also includes photos OF THE FOOD. This book, in my opinion, is a MUST for those of us who LIKE spending time in the kitchen.....those who have time to put towards creating quite authentic dishes that are guaranteed to please.

5 out of 5 stars New Edition of Great Italian Cookbook........2007-03-26

`Molto Italiano' is Food Network icon Mario Batali's fourth and, to my lights, best cookbook to date. Like Mario, it has a very nice heft to it, advertising 327 recipes in an utterly simple organization in 450 easy to read pages with a built-in ribbon bookmark, something I think should be a required feature on all cookbooks. For all of those clamoring to buy Giada De Laurentiis' cookbook, I would recommend you pass that up for this book, which is the

Mario states that his cooking, and these recipes, are all based on Italian home cooking and repeats his often stated belief that in Italy, no one thinks the best cooking is done in restaurantes. Everyone believes the best cooking is done at their aunt's house or Nonna's house or at the house of the matriarch living down the street above the market. No one goes to a restaurant to get superior meals; they simply go to celebrate so Mama and Nonna don't have to cook. I have been hearing this claim for years on `Molto Mario', and it finally dawned on me the implication this has for all the Italian restaurant cookbooks out there, including Mario's own `Babbo Cookbook'. In strong contrast to cooking in `the F country' where an important difference is made between `haute cuisine' (Paul Bocuse, Joel Robuchon, et al), `cuisine bourgeoisie' ' (Julia Child, Richard Olney) and `cuisine provincial' (Elizabeth David, Patricia Wells), Italy has its regional home cooking and approximations to it done in restaurante, trattoria, osteria, and enotecas.

I am really happy to see this book devoted almost exclusively to RECIPES. There is a five page essay by David Lynch on Italian wines after the introduction and there is a one page list of recommended kitchen equipment at the end of the book (Please add food mill to list, as it is used in the potato gnocchi recipe. This is actually more useful than a potato ricer, as it can do more different things.). There is also two-page list of suppliers at the end of the book, but that's about it. The contents and relative size of the chapters accurately reflects Mario's mantra about the relative importance of various types of food in the Italian cuisine. Meat appears in almost every chapter as the base of a sauce or as a condiment, but it is less important as a main dish. The chapters are:

Antipasto, by far the largest chapter at 106 pages, divided into sections on vegetable, seafood, and meat dishes. This section is so large that this book can easily replace most books specializing in antipasti.
Soup, Rice, and Polenta takes 38 pages with 29 recipes, including all the most familiar dishes such as Roman egg drop soup, Tuscan cabbage and bean soup, saffron risotto, and polenta with clams.
Dried Pasta gets 24 pages with 20 recipes. For me, the most important recipe here is Mario's version of spaghetti alla carbonara, wherein he does not break the egg yolks, but leaves that to the diner to enhance the sauce by breaking the yolks. I learned this dish on `Molto Mario', and have been frustrated at everyone else's recipe which whips the yolks together with the white before mixing with the pasta.
Fresh Pasta chapter is over twice as long with 34 recipes, including a basic pasta dough and several gnocchi recipes. As Mario did his apprenticeship in Emilia-Romagna, where fresh pasta is much more common than the southern dry pasta, this is understandable.
Fish is understandably a major chapter at 48 pages and 31 recipes, including calamari, shrimp, crabs, snails, sardines, bass, sole, snapper, mullet, salt cod, monkfish, eel, tuna, swordfish, and mackerel.
Fowl is slightly smaller at 38 pages and 27 recipes with 10 chicken, 6 turkey, 5 duck, and 6 game bird recipes. This includes some classics such as hunter's style chicken and turkey meatballs.
Meat occupies a sizable chapter, at 54 pages and 40 recipes, including several of my favorites such as veal Marsala, sausage and broccoli rabe, stuffed meat loaf, and two recipes for calves liver. Yum.
Vegetables also get an appropriately sizable chapter with 34 pages and 34 recipes, including some with Mario's favorite ingredient, Guanciale (Note: Dean and Delucca in Greenwich Village carries Guanciale).
Sweets are in the last chapter of 42 pages and 32 recipes with items from the Austrian influenced Alps to Sicily. Mario goes so far as to recant his claim that Italians do not eat many sweets, revising his story to say that they don't eat many sweets at the end of big meals. Instead, they pack away the sugar with nibbles throughout the day.

Lots of familiar Italian dishes such as frittatas are here, but Mario doesn't waste precious room on bread that has been covered so well in other books.

While Mario gives the Italian name for each and every recipe, the recipe names in the various section tables of contents are all in English. Even those names which have become well known such as `cacciatore' are given as `hunter's style'. Italian is reserved for the recipes' subtitles. This makes the book especially good for first timers to Italian cuisine.

The recent book to which Mario's work is most closely comparable is Michele Scicolone's `1000 Italian Recipes'. I compared several recipes in the two books and, for various reasons almost always preferred Mario's version. In the veal Marsala, for example, Mario sautés in olive oil and uses butter as a final flavoring rather than sauteeing in hot butter. Both more practical and more authentic. In the potato gnocchi recipe, Mario gives much more delicate instructions for combining the riced potato, flour, and egg. Mario also starts off with less flour per potato, leaving the finishing amount of flour to the discretion of the cook.

This is my new first choice among Italian cookbooks for non-foodies. The recipes are all relatively simple, but with no compromises. For Mario fans, put this under your pillow at night. Very Highly Recommended.

All the sumptuous flavor without all the fat. Indian cuisine is appreciated the world over but many of the delicious traditional dishes, although pleasing to the palate, are full of saturated fat. This book makes a special effort to avoid the use of unhealthy ingredients such as ghee, cream, and butter by using them more sparingly or by substituting with healthier alternatives. But there is no compromise on flavor. With an emphasis mainly on north Indian cuisine, dishes range from delicious starters, fish, meat, chicken and vegetable main courses to tasty accompaniments such as vegetable side dishes, yogurt-based dishes, rice and breads. A collection of scrumptious desserts satisfies the sweet tooth. This vast and varied selection of eighty-seven reduced-fat Indian recipes is ideal for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, especially those who love the spicy flavors of Indian cuisine, but prefer to eat healthy.

2 out of 5 stars Question the REAL Value.......2001-04-18

The good folks editing the reviews here at Amazon have told me in no uncertain terms that my reviews should focus SOLELY on the product itself. Comments on merchandising are entirely unwelcome, at least according to some editors here. In reference to my comments on a similar product I've been told "Your review of the Collector's Value Guide has been removed from our database, as it is not a critique of the book in question. It is not clear from reading the review that you have read the book you commented on." How one comments on the quality of a "book" like the Ty Beanie Babies Winter 2001 Collector's Value Guide, which is almost exclusively about merchandise and exists solely because of marketing, without commenting on merchandising of the products I don't quite know. (To prove I've actually "read the book", hopefully I'll be allowed to tell you that the products considered in this tome are small stuffed animal [some imaginary] toys with heart-shaped paper tags on their ears known as "Beanie Babies". I'm not at all sure that I'll be allowed to discuss these legume-namesaked infants further, though.)

But I'll give it a try: Having read the Ty Beanie Babies Winter 2001 Collector's Value Guide, by an anonymous author, I can say that I was extremely disappointed. True, there were lots of good pictures, and tons of characters, but character development was extremely limited. The plot was completely incomprehensible to me. Whoever this mystery author is, he or she is far more obscure than James Joyce ever was! Talk about sound and fury signifying nothing! I can't help but think that another author would have done so much better with this material. Now, I don't want to give away the ending or too many "plot twists", but I was disappointed to find that as soon as the reader gets interested in a particular character, that character disappears ominously (or in Beanie Baby parlance, " is retired"). I'm not at all sure that younger children should be exposed to such a frightening prospect. Older children may be able to get past these concerns to see the essential theme of the book in a positive light as the continual renewal of life. But frankly, I'd give this book a miss.

4 out of 5 stars A good guide for knowing what's out there.......2001-04-07

I do not really use this as a price guide, because let's face it, most of the common Beanies are only worth as little as 3.00. But it is a good color picture guide, and you can use it for knowing what's out there. There were so many 2001 releases, I couldn't keep track of them online. So at least I can go through the book and mark which ones I have, and which ones I want. I want to get all the cats, at least!!

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Book I have Ever Read.......2001-03-01

I love beanies, they are so cute like my little dog teddy. Unfortunately, sometimes he is not so cute and he eats my Beanie Babies. But at least teddy didn't eat this book, I don't know what I would do! My dog is so cute, I wish that I could find a Beanie Baby that looked like him.

5 out of 5 stars Every thing to organise your collection.......2000-12-01

With each page having a space to put your bought price and market value (some filled in) this book makes it easy to organise the value of your collection. It includes Ty Buddies, the Mc Donald's teenie beenies the beanie kids and of courde, beanie babies. Being the most recent, it includes the new zodiac babies. Each page has colourful photos of the toy, the poem in its tag. its release date, retirement date and birthdate.

But wait there's more!! Found at the back are sport's promotion beanies, spotting counterfeits, tag generations and a list of beanies by their birthdays. Thank goodness its got a good index..........

I bought this book when a fabric store in MD near me was closing; not my first choice at the time. Once I found myself experimenting with more challenging blocks, I finally opened it; within minutes it had the solutions to the angles and slices I had repeatedly made mistakes on. And I wondered why I hadn't read it sooner.

I accidentally picked up both the first and this newly revised edition at the library and found the revised edition very like the first. There are some new shapes and quilts but the techniques remain the same. The author does introduce the concept of speedily cutting out pieces for quilting but does so with line drawings only. Considering that her method often involves the use of tape to outline the shapes to be cut, I think at least one photograph would've been beneficial in illustrating this method. Obviously it MUST be good since this is the second edition but I was unfortunately unimpressed by it. The 20 quilts - rated from beginner to advanced - are also average, not too exciting. The Piney Woods quilt, rated "beginner" doesn't have adequate instruction on how to piece the tree trunk piece for speed cutting. and I assume the blocks requiring applique, inset piecing and partial seaming are for instruction in those methods but, again, a photograph would've served well in these instances. The author states that hand sewing certain pieces, like the hexagon, by learning to eyeball the seam allowance is easier than inset piecing on the machine but even after re-reading the paragraph, I still didn't quite get it. I wonder at some of these selections for beginners working alone. Overall, I think a Leisure Arts book on scrap quilting would be a better introduction to speed cutting and/or piecing, even without the rating system or lengthy introduction.

                              Book Description

From the famous sheela-na-gigs, through all forms of exhibitionists-mermaids, centaurs, misers and priapic figures--extraordinary sculptures considered "obscene" by today's standards may be found on churches in Britain, Ireland, France and Spain. This book examines their origins and purposes and sees them not as sacrilegious figures, or symbols, nor even as idols of ancient pre-Christian religions, but as serious works that dealt with the sexual customs and salvation of medieval folk, and thus gave support to the church's moral teachings.

Howard Stern talks about himself on his syndicated radio show 5 days a week, 4 hours a day. Howard Stern already has published two best-selling books based on his life and career. This leaves very little of interest for the author to say about Stern who, after all, is popular partly because he blabs so freely about his own (married) sex life and the mundane humiliations of his past. Colford flips the coin and bets the reader will be interested to hear how NORMAL and NOT shocking the shock-jock's life really is. Some will be more interested than others.

4 out of 5 stars Confidence Is Being Bold Enough To Be Yourself!.......2003-09-23

America has been known the bastion where you have a right to be different if you have the confidence to stay with your beliefs in the face of societal ridicule. Pioneers end up two ways, some find prosperity by starting new paths, and some end up with arrows in their backs. After reading this book, Howard Stern is a Pioneer that prospers due to his will to be different and confident at work and in life.

It was a joy reading an unbiased book on Howard Stern. I enjoyed his radio show once in awhile but admit I have had to tune it out and off now and then too. The book gave interesting information on the salaries of his staff and inner workings of Radio and TV Stations and how programs acquire airtime.

I agree with author who never trashes Howard Stern but actually gives a good picture of him and his struggles to being a Top Radio personality. I admire Howard's sheer determination to work hard at job, support his family and talk about anything.

I really enjoyed learning how the Stations Sponsors who advertised on his show were impressed with his professionalism and interest in knowing and learning everything about their products and services they were selling. This is a true mark of an honest man living up to his job as a professional.

I was surprised to learn that Infinity did pay off his FCC fines to avoid problems with a merger later. I feel Howard has been a pioneer with the airwaves and first amendment issues to the public benefit not to anyone's detriment.

Since losing his marriage and wife as well as Jackie the Joke Man it is not the same show. But is still entertaining. I now use it as one of three stations I use walking in the morning. I find National Public Radio more enlightening, Jim Quinn for more thoughtful and Howard and crew interesting and delightful on entertainment issues of our day.

In the end, Howard learn to be confident in his own ideas, own behavior and always paid attention to his sponsors, people who helped him and mutual friends and professionals. I believe having supreme confidence in you like Howard Stern demonstrates every day. Those seeking to banish him just need to tune him out or off, but not remove him in anyway

4 out of 5 stars Howard Stern : King of All Media........2000-03-05

It pretty much is a factual account of Howard Stern's life from his childhood days to his days in Detroit and WNBC radio. Nothing risque is really discussed. I would recommend it to someone who is looking for a viewpoint of Howard's life other than Howard. The author neither supports or chastises Stern, but presents the facts without any bias one way or the other, and that's nice to see in journalism. It's definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Good insights into Stern's history........1999-06-03

I found this book to be informative to Stern's rise to fame and fortune. Nothing really groundbreaking or unbelieveable, just the facts. A very quick, but honest look at Howard's personal life. How he keeps everyone at bay and tries to isolate himself from the world at this house, which is understandable. Private Parts offers more humor, but a lot of the same stuff, of course.

4 out of 5 stars For the Howard Stern fan who has everything -- almost........1998-07-02

I found Paul Colford's book interesting, well-written, and entertaining. I have all of Howard Stern's books, videos, CDs, and a large collections of magazine articles and such. King of All Media is a nice addition to my collection. But don't take my word for it. Go to the nearest bookstore and check it out for yourself. Then get online and order it for less $$ from amazon.com.
