Book Description
With her first novel, Praise Jerusalem!, Augusta Trobaugh established herself as a keen observer of the social, economic, and racial divisions that isolate us from each other. Her literary debut drew raves from readers and critics alike:
A perfect balance of richness and delicacy. ... I found something to amaze and delight me on every page. Bailey White, National Public Radio commentator and author of Quite a Year for Plums
Trobaugh grounds her first rich novel with salty dialogue and earthy realism. Publishers Weekly
Now available in paperback, Resting in the Bosom of the Lamb is this gifted authors triumphant second novel. Once again, Augusta Trobaugh works the soil of the American South, and the harvest is rich indeed. This novel tells the story of secrets that lie buried beneath the surface yet continue to wreak havoc in the lives of the Southern women to whom they belong.
Customer Reviews:
Sappy, sappy, sappy.......2006-07-12
I thought this was going to have some real substance to it. There was potential but somehow the author never got around to it. It was hard to determine what the time line was. Most of the dialogue was contrived. If it had been pared down to what was relevant to the story, this book would have been a short-story. I was two thirds through the book before the meat of the story even began and then it was so apparent how it was going to end and what the theme was, that it really didn't matter if I finished the book or not. However, I stuck it out and breathed a sigh of relief when I read the last page.
unforgettable characters.......2006-01-05
so well written.....i felt like these were actual people that i had the priveledge of knowing in my own life. wonderful stories and a cast of characters that will stay with you long after you've put this book down. a great read!
A Southern Treat.......2003-12-16
This book makes me long for a front porch, a rocking chair & good friends with stories to tell. Ms. Trobaugh certainly has given us once again people that we will not soon forget. I love all her books. Please read and enjoy.
A true gem of a book.......2003-11-16
Have you ever read a book filled with so many interesting people, and such a fascinating environment, that you didn't want it to end? That's how I felt about this title, which was my introduction to the work of Augusta Trobaugh.
Her descriptive passages are detailed and keenly observant -- you can close your eyes and "see" the entire scene. It's filled with heart, soul -- and humor (the passages with Miss Cora and Maggie are hilarious and poignant at the same time -- a rare accomplishment).
I've always had a weakness for Southern writers, and Trobaugh is a worthy successor to Eurdora Welty. I can't wait to read all of her novels!
Loved this book :-}.......2001-08-29
An excellent story that was hard to set down because the author made me feel like I was sitting in a rocking chair on the huge southern front porch listening to an old family tale. Family secrets and much love between these women family members. Don't pass by this book, it's exceptionally good.

Anne McCaffrey is back with this precious, well-researched yarn that follows a Celtic lad in service to King Arthur. Set in fifth-century Britain, McCaffrey's first historical novel for young adults rejects a fantastical, Hollywood treatment of King Arthur in favor of realism and solid storytelling. Take away the Round Table and the usual knights-in-shining-armor hoo-hah, and you're left with an engaging, endearing chapter from the life of Artos, Comes Britannorum, a young war leader in search of horses strong enough to carry his armored warriors into battle against the savage Saxons.
The story is told through the eyes of polite, earnest young do-gooder Galwyn Varianus, who has fled the service of his cruel, brutish, seafaring uncle to take up with the charismatic Artos. Galwyn quickly proves his value with his affinity for languages and horses, and he accompanies Artos and the Companions (proto-Knights of the Round Table) as they execute their plan: acquiring and then breeding a handful of fabled Libyans, the horses of the book's title, and then mastering and disseminating the knowledge of horseshoe-making. The action revolves around Galwyn's role in this plan and never rises above the pace of, say, an after-school special. But rich details, McCaffrey's obvious love of the subject matter, and involving characters go a long way to make up for the story's slow trot. (In particular, you'll find yourself waiting eagerly for the comeuppance of one character, a sneering rider named Iswy, Goofus to Galwyn's Gallant.) --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Lord Artos--later to rule as the legendary King Arthur--knew he could defeat the Saxon invaders if only he could find a race of horses swift and strong enough to carry warriors in full regalia fast and far. And so he set out for the Continent, in search of the famed horses of the desert.
The key to Lord Artos' plan was the young runaway Galwyn Varianus, whose gift for horse-trading was second only to his skill with horses. What no one expected was how crucial Galwyn would be to the upcoming battles--as he mastered the secrets of the iron shoes that would protect the desert horses' delicate hooves . . .
This fast-moving historical fantasy by bestselling author Anne McCaffrey--the story of King Arthur as it has never been told before--is about the beginnings of the British cavalry, as recounted by a boy growing up in exciting and perilous times.

A young boy helps King Arthur.......2007-06-27
Though this book is aimed at young adults, I quite enjoyed it. It was a fast read, and I am interested in anything that has to do with King Arthur. This story focuses mostly around the boy Galwyn and his love for horses. He eventually is able to help King Arthur, or Artos, with his knowledge of both horses and languages. I think all young adults will enjoy this story, and it is good for adults looking for a quick read. If you like horses, or stories related to King Arthur, check this one out.
Anne McCafery's historical fiction book set in the time of the Briton and Saxon War ( by a 13 year old ).......2007-02-06
Anne McCafery is back but instead of a fantasy novel she's come out with a great historical fiction book, set in the time of the Briton and Saxon War, Black Horses for the King. Keeping Away from the stereotyped King Arthur and his knights in shining armor, she tries to make it as true and historically correct as possible and yet still make it her own and as fascinatingly unique as possible. This intriguing book is about Young Galwyn who escaped his slave-like life as a seaman under the whip of his cruel uncle. He joined up with the courageous and heroic Lord Artos (King Arthur) who is trying to eliminate the Saxons. Galwyn figured out his calling in life is being a blacksmith, courier and a horse handler. But his most important trade is horseshoeing Lord Artos's great Libyan Horses for the Great War of the Britons and the Saxons; but when someone has a tremendously important job---along comes envy. Like In most books, when there is a hero along comes the "bad guy." In this case it's another horse handler (Iswy) who was (literally) kicked out for trying to attack a horse; Iswy who despises and envies Galwyn tries to ruin and end Galwyn's life. At the end Galwyn and Lord Atoes are both victorious in defeating their own enemy.
The Story of King Arthur without the round table.......2007-02-06
Best-selling fantasy author Anne McCaffrey has done it again and has written another fantastic book, Black Horses For The King. Black Horses For The King is a historical fiction book set in the time of the legendary King Arthur, who at this time was called Lord Artos. It is about Galwyn Varinus, a young man apprenticed to his cruel uncle, a sailor named Gralior, after his father dies. Galwyn runs away from his uncles ship to join with Lord Artos, who at that time was passing through the area trying to find Libyan mounts for his men to ride into battle on against the Saxons. Galwyn on his journey makes a blood enemy, a young Cornovian who treats Galwyn with minimal respect and more than once makes Galwyn's life awful. During his stay with the Companions of Lord Artos, Canyd, a horse doctor, and a smith finally invent horseshoes. Although the topic of the horseshoes was interesting, I think the author dragged it on a bit too long. Galwyn finally grows trustworthy enough in Lord Artos's mind to be allowed into Camelot (Artos's headquarters) where he becomes honorable, loyal, and grows into a man. While this book was easy to read and comprehend it might be unsuitable for little kids, as it has some sad and violent topics. There were a lot of characters but the author didn't introduce them all at once, which made the book more comprehensible. Overall this was an excellent story, which painted in your mind a clear picture of life in the time of King Arthur.
Black Horses For the King Report by a 13 year old.......2007-02-06
Anne McCaffrey writes Black Horses For The King as her first historical fiction story, branching off from her popular fantasy Dragonriders of Pern series. The story goes as follows: A young Celtic boy, Galwyn Varianus, is forced to work on his no-good uncle's ship after Galwyn's father dies. Fortunately Galwyn becomes a favored one of Lord Artos, later to become King Arthur, for Galwyn is blessed with being able to speak many different tongues. Galwyn seizes his chance and runs away to join Lord Artos. To Galwyn's surprise, Artos is on his way to the famed horse fair in Septimania in hopes of buying pure black Libyan stallions and mares to ride into battle against the savage Saxons. Galwyn learns to overcome his weaknesses and fears to become one of the best hose masters that Briton has to offer. McCaffrey's love for horses and the art of farriery--horseshoeing--is much too evident in the story. She makes farriery seem very boring because she writes about it too much too often. Nevertheless, she makes up for it by adding beautifully developed characters and painting visions of the lush, breathtaking view of Briton and the jet-black stallions. This is a great book for horse-lovers and those who like historical fiction stories.
Historical, but not well intertwined........2006-11-06
Throughout reading this book I had mixed feelings about it. At parts it seems to just be like reading a text book, at other parts it felt like I was reading more of a Lord of the Rings type adventure.
From my point of veiw the author was very careful to make all of his data historical. Lots of the events in this story are closely related to, or completly the same as many historical happenings. In some parts of the book this can be great, but in other parts it seemed like the author was trying a little to hard to get tons of facts in the book.
I give it 3 stars, mostly because it is a good read, but there are a few flaws in the book.

Customer Reviews:
Fast Paced Thriller From All Angles.......2007-07-19
This book is a great read. The author flips back and forth between the Secret Ops mission and the political masterminds giving them the orders. The plot unfolds in such a way to give the reader an insider's view into the process and secrecy regarding the US's secret operatives, as only a good writer with a deep understanding of the politics behind the scenes. Overall, 'All The King's Horses' is a great book, from all angles.
Well paced thriller from a new author.......2007-02-08
This is a well paced, carefully plotted, complicated thriller. The author cuts cleanly from scene to scene, varying big-picture views with first-person shots with inside-the-head-of-a-character narratives in a way that keeps the story moving and keeps you interested. The scenes are incredibly well researched, and the author clearly knows about the subjects on which he writes -- his experience in the Halls of Congress are evident to anyone who ever spent any time there, and as a veteran railroader I appreciated how carefully researched his sections involving the trains were (illustrating that even the smallest of scenes show he knows what he's talking about). There was careful character development and backstories, as well as interesting explorations of character as the individuals faced various tensions (romance versus work, work versus family, history versus current duty). Two small nitpicks: there are a few characters I hope to learn more about but I have the feeling that I will get to know them better in future books. And the book could benefit from a stronger editorial hand in terms of grammar/spelling but the story moves you along so well that while you may mentally tag them, you race over any small glitches.

I Think I Liked This One Even Better.......2007-02-28
John's first book really set the stage for this one and I could read it on its own merit and have a complete picture. The battle scenes are vivid and descriptive. The character dialogue was great. I did not want to put this book down. For the 2nd in a series, I found this really great. I am now a fan and can't wait to read the next one!
Wow what a good read.......2006-02-23
I recently read this author's first book, "Fleet Command's Enigma Ship" and was impressed enough to try his second book. Man am I glad I did, because this book was fantastic. A lot of imagination went into this story. There was a lot of action and suspense and twists and turns in the story to keep me reading. I was afraid to put it down because I knew if I did I would miss something. What a good read. I sure hope he has a third book?

Book Description
WHAT GOD HATH JOINED is a true story...a story of sacrifice, of courage, of the power of love. A Roman Catholic priest, Terry Sweeney had been a Jesuit for 23 years when he met Pamela Susan Shoop. A love story set against the backdrop of church discipline, their book takes the reader on a very personal spiritual and emotional journey. Written in alternating chapters, it is an honest, and often painful description of what takes place in the heart of a priest who falls in love, and in the heart of a woman living in the shadow of a "forbidden" love. Terry and Pam confront their personal crises of conscience and faith, as well as difficulties with family members and parishioners.
The rule of mandatory celibacy for Roman Catholic priests has caused pain, suffering, and suicide for over sixteen hundred years. It is one of the most divisive and crippling problems threatening the survival of the priesthood today. After 8 years of research into the history of the law of celibacy, Terry was told to gather the research together and destroy it, or he would be dismissed from the Jesuit Order. After great deliberation, he refused to destroy the research.
WHAT GOD HATH JOINED is the story of two people who know the pain of loving with a divided heart, of struggling to discern whether priestly intimacy and love are a sin or a blessing. It is the story of two people who know what it costs to move from fears that love is wrong to a consciousness that love, of all life's graces, is the most sacred.
Customer Reviews:
AN EMBARRASSMENT.......2003-10-13
Poorly done in all respects, this book is embarassing in its shallow presentation of its soap-opera authors. I was expecting a real book filled with deep and complex thoughts and emotions, and instead I found merely a very sugary and superficial public relations plea from two very ego-eccentric and self-dramatizing people.
No man is an Island.......2000-06-20
I walked away from this book wondering so many things, like: Why is it that the representatives of the Catholic Church refuse to just admit when they have made a mistake? Instead of admitting fallibility with laws on celibacy, they continue to put people through such trials (as was experienced by Fr. and Mrs. Sweeney in this enlightening book), and call upon people to accept and live with those mistakes by justifying them as an act of faith.
This book will take the reader upon a perilous journey of the heart and soul. Fr. Sweeney and his wife share the heartbreak and triumph of their relationship and the sacrifices that had to be made so they could be together. But the question you will be left asking is why did they have to sacrifice anything? And when will the Catholic Church stop hurting lives by such an artificial and UN-natural celibacy law that Christ Himself, never set forth into being?
Love shall prevail.......2000-05-27
This is one of the best books I have ever read!Others have spoken much more eloquently on a summeraztion of this book. I would much rather speak on an emotional level. These lives will touch you and give you much to think about in you hours of contemplation and meditation. Originally reading this book when first released, I was left with the nagging question. How can a religion think that love can only be between those who are not ministering to others?Love has nothing to do with what one does for a living. Who those people are or what station in life they hold. Love is eternal and timeless.I, at numerous times while reading and re-reading this book, was brought to tears by the struggles of both Pamela an Terry. The emotional rollercoaster ride that makes up only a segment of these twoindividuals is a compelling and emotionally draining story of hope and faith. While this book will show, what many can think of as faults of the catholic churh, it cannot be misconstrued as a "catholic bashing" story. It is a story of love for ones religion and beliefs and how a church will not believe that unless the issue of married priests is addressed the catholic church will not survive. The rapid and prolonged exodus of priests from the church because of this issue along will bring the church down. While the political ramifications of this story to the church is paramount, the love story is exceptionally touching and cannot be overlooked. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It will bring you a great deal to think about, and reafirm your faith in love.
Painful Decisions.......2000-04-08
A love story about two people and the sacrifices each had to make in their own life in order to share the rest of thier life together in marriage. The women describes her emotions of resentment, and confusion while the man she loves, a Priest goes through a terrible trial of spriritual probing. His description of his thorough investigation of celibacy laws in the Catholic Church is very enlightening. His personal decisions and how they will affect their future are carefully described....this is a deeply moving story.

Chefs' cookbooks are full of dishes that require hours of preparation. The steps are often simple, but each one must be performed precisely to ensure an ultimately successful outcome. Hans Röckenwagner's Pan-Roasted Chicken Breasts on Curried Eggplant with Polenta Fries and Lemon Chutney is a perfect example. It also exemplifies how he constructs complex dishes from what he calls "building blocks." Röckenwagner, the cookbook, features recipes from the similarly named, favorably rated California restaurant. The menus also include tempting, simpler choices such as apple pancake and a killer bread pudding; other offerings, such as goulash soup, pretzels, and spaetzle, reflect Röckenwagner's German roots. Among the showpieces, Medallions of Salmon with a Smoked Salmon and Horseradish Topping is a recipe that cooks who enjoy an afternoon in the kitchen might reasonably attempt. Beyond that, this cookbook is primarily for attracting customers to the restaurant.

From pretzels to spaetzel to struedel, this book has German dishes with a zing. The whole cookbook is display of this mostly unknown Californian chef. Personally saw him on Food Tv. He has a flair for unique food, presented in remarkable ways (good photos of his technique). This one will serve anyone looking for a wonderful cookbook which hasn't gotten lot of the attention it deserves.
