Subtle and excellent.......2007-08-10
"Mais c'est la dernière! Nous ne nous batterons plus: nous nous marierons!"
But it's the last [war]. We will no longer fight each other; We will marry each other!
So says Werner von Ebrennac in this subtly moving novel. Werner is a Nazi soldier living with a Frenchman and his niece who voice their resistance to the occupation with silence. Werner loves France and all things French and harbors the belief that Germany has not come to harm France, but to "marry her." This was by far my favorite piece of literature I ever had to read in college. I have read it several times since, and each time I appreciate more and more the elegance and economy of the words, that beautiful sublety for which the French language is so famous. This book puts a human face on the Nazis and one ends up feeling very sorry for the francophile Werner. In comparing France and Germany (and perhaps himself and the niece) to Beauty and the Beast he says, "J'aimais surtout la Bête parce que je comprenais sa peine." I loved especially the Beast because I understood his pain." Every time I read it, I feel differently at the end. That's the beauty of this work, the silence that hides something, like the silence of the sea.
I recommend this version, especially if you are not confident in your French because the English translation is right there. Also, obscure words are translated at the bottom, words. Try it in French though because that language is so suited to a story such as this.
I love this book.......2005-12-09
I read this book in French in my French class; therefore, I cannot comment on the English version. The French version is poetic and inspiring. It deals with the interactions of individuals that all people can relate to. It is not a book of action--I would parallel Le Silence de la Mer to Tuesdays With Morrie--but it is full of ideas to reflect on. Not only is it a great book to reflect on philisophically, it is also a great book to put into the cultural perspective. It was one of the first books published after WWII, and, if I can remember correctly, it was first published as a midnight edition and circulated underground. If you are wanting to learn about the war from a French perspective as well as a German perspective, it is the right book to choose.
le silence de la rubbish book.......2004-02-23
i too am studying this school at french so basically what would i know. as well as not being very good at french im also not much of a book reader. in my opinion the only good part of the book is when it prevails that werner is sending himself to the frontline, he would rather die than destroy france and its people. thats quite touching. i wouldnt recommend reading this book for pleasure. thats strange i can smell gravy...
This book is neither good nor bad...........2000-08-14
I've read this books versions both in English and in French, and to suggest that it is a terrible book in either is to miss the point entirely. Yes, it is a bit dry at times (especially if your French is bad.... cause you'd miss a lot of the subtlety...) Yes, in English it seems rough and not that well done. Yes, perhaps if you have a limited amount of time to read books regarding this subject matter, etc. this should not be the first book you read....
But it is a good story with a different viewpoint. Does one accept a common humanity and collaborate with the German-- who after all does not seem that evil.... or does one forgo that for the pride of being French.... and being the conquored....
Honestly, everything having to do with WWII is biased.... or most everything.... this portrait is at least honest about it.... and fairly nonpoliticized... though that is another topic entirely....

Eegads.......2005-08-03
I have about four shelves of fantasy books, mostly FR, and I can tell you I almost didn't bother to finish this one. The allure was learning more about the seven sisters, a couple of whom are almost never mentioned anywhere else. The problem with this book is that I didn't get much about them out of it. In fact, I didn't get much of anything.
Most of the book is hack and slash, which I can enjoy if it's well done, but it was really just mediocre. The plot was almost forgotten in the sense that it was really used as an action delivery vehicle. It felt a bit like a Arnold movie, one of the really dumb ones like Red Sonya. When the end finally came it happened in kind of a POOF! manner that left you sitting there wondering how someone could write a 370 page book and dedicate about 5 pages to wrapping up the plot. It was almost an afterthought!
Plot, development, etc., these were lacking, but by FAR the most irritating thing about Greenwood's writing is the bizarre sexuality he forces upon the unwitting reader. I'm a huge fan of adding sexuality to books if it fits, but Greenwood's romantic touch reads like a sledgehammer to the face. Out of the 7 sisters I believe every one except the ghost shoved her tongue in some guy's mouth - almost in those words. Not only was the style grotesque, in the tradition of 14 year old pron, it was completely out of place. All of these super powerful mages happen to be sexy little kittens who can't control themselves even when faced with massive, life-threatening conspiracies? Bah. Anyone who thinks I'm a prude can find me lurking in any number of Hollywood clubs each weekend, so when I say this stuff was out of place, rest assured it's not because I'm uptight. It was simply poor writing.
Just plain bad.......2005-04-05
I wish I'd read most of the reviews here before picking up this book. I wanted more on the relationships between the sisters, but instead we get one or two at a time. It's not a series of short stories, it's one long novel with different points of view (all strikingly similar.)
Frankly, I've only read one other Ed Greenwood novel, where Elminster is in Myth Drannor, because I'm nuts for the history of elves. I disliked his portrayal of elves in that novel, and I dislike his portrayal of people in this novel. Isn't there ONE person in the Realms who can look at the Sisters and not think about sex??
This does it. From now on, only Elaine Cunningham stories for me.
Couldnt even "start" it........2004-06-24
I managed to read about 15 pages of this book. I dont think I have ever read a worse book. From the start it reads like one of Ed's kids wrote it. (Does E.G. have kids? Dont know its a figure of speech.)
The worst book I've ever read.......2003-09-04
While I really liked many of Ed Greenwood's contributions to the Forgotten Realms, "Silverfall" is the ultimate failure. The whole story - when one can call it a story at all - is implausible from the first to the last word. The charactes have not even the faintest depth. The Seven Sisters are the Chosen of Mystra, and are therefore beings of tremendous power. Each of the sisters usually has her very own personality and her very own motivations, as well as being quite intelligent and sometimes even wise. In "Silverfall" they are simply a bunch of arrogant fools. They are running about without rhyme or reason and rush headlong into every trap and every danger set for them, missing not even a single one. Half of the time they are surviving their arrogance and foolishness only because they are the great and mighty Chosen of Mystra. The other half of the time it's sheer luck and one must wonder if they are secretly also the Chosen of Tymora (the goddess of luck). Why the Seven Sisters must constanly be unclad is also beyond me ... but that's another story. Everyone who "knows" the Seven Sisters from other sources should give this book a wide berth and keep them in mind as they deserve it.

Customer Reviews:
Corona is amazing!.......2007-01-10
This book was amazing and my first Salvatore book I have ever read. I really enjoyed the seriousness of the spiritual battles and physical battles mingled with the wonderful timly humor that Salvatore's characters delivered.
One of the neatest graphical scenes for me was the demon posession towards the begininng of the book, it was so intensely vivid that it was frightfully scary, as if you were right there and that your body could be sought next! YIKES!
Like I said before what I liked about this book was the perfect blend between down right awesome seriousness and positively humours at the same time..Very hard thing to accomplish.
This book definetly will draw you into this wonderful world of Corona!
Get it!
Classic Sci-Fi Thriller .......2006-11-22
R. A. Salvatore creates another science fiction classic in his release of The Demon Awakens. Elbryan Wyndon's hometown of Dundalis is destroyed by a raid of goblins and fomorian giants. He believes he is the only survivor, and is taken in by elves for physical and mental training to become the next ranger, and protect the people in of the area. Little does he know that his love, Jilseponie, had also survived the raid and made a new life with the Coastpoint Guards, despite her memory loss of her childhood. Their paths cross along with Avelyn, a monk from the Abellican church who is trained in the use of the sacred gems; Bradwarden, a powerful centaur that resides in the forest near Dundalis; and the trapper crew of Paulson, Chipmunk, and Cric. Together they set out to confront the dactyl, the evil demon that has brought together the goblins, giants, and the bloodthirsty powries to form an unstoppable army that threatens the peace of the world. This is a great read for anybody, I like how there are many main characters developed and the action of the story is amazing. Science Fiction fans will love this book especially.
This is a difficult book to rate.......2006-11-07
If you have read the Dark Elf Trilogy, then you know what to expect. Although I daresay that this series is better the Drizzt books for the simple reason that Drizzt is never going to be killed in battle, regardless of how many people or even gods he faces. So Drizzt is never in real jeopardy so has become uninteresting. In this series no character is truly safe, and no character is kept around after they are no longer useful to the story.
My first reaction was thinking that Mr. Salvatore plagiarized himself. Take the best points of Elbryan and Avelyn and you have Drizzt. Bradwarden is Wulfgar and Pony is Cattie Bri, even one of her nicknames is a nod to it. The similar training sequences and moralizing are here was well.
Unlike the other fantasy writer named Robert, this Robert can cover a lot of ground quickly, with enough details to get a very good idea of the last few weeks, months or even years. Salvatore trusts and encourages our imagination.
I liked his take on centaurs, and especially liked the magic system. It is very unique, which is a rarity in the fantasy genre. The elves are somewhat standard(very aloof), but are interesting enough. The church is what you would expect from a group of people filled with the stink of piety and power.
So why 4 stars instead of 1 or 2? Simple: it is a very interesting story that keeps you engaged and never gets bogged down in unimportant details. Unlike other series that go past 3 books, this series stays engaging from beginning to end. Well worth getting into.
The Demon Awakens.......2006-07-27
At first glance readers may compare the first book of Demon Wars to The Wheel of Time. However, The Demon Awakens is much better. Salvatore spins the tail of Elbryan and his amazing friends beautifully. Fans will love this. There are so many twists and turns that readers simply won't be able to put this book down.
Started strong then falls off.......2006-01-26
I love Salvatore and hate to sound negative but I have a bad taste in my mouth after reading this trilogy. I won't bother reviewing the next two b/c this unfortunitly is the best of the three.
The first third I couldn't put down. I loved it, it was becoming my favorite fantasy novel of all time. The three seperate parts of each protaganist training and growing and living was awesome. But when the three of them got together it just fell apart.
After Avelyn sacrifices himself, Salvatore gets stuck on that the rest of the trilogy. He comes back to it over and over again. Get over it. I don't care anymore, move on to something else.
And what is with Elbryan having feelings about killing another man? What is with Salvatore's moral compass becoming so large in his work now? What happened with him? Was he born again? It is starting to creep into Drizzt as well and it upsets me. Is this a fantasy novel or a morality play? I want the former. Go smash something with your sword and kill it. Don't stand there and feel bad, get off your high horse Robert and get back to writing what you are good at!

Customer Reviews:
A Historical Guide, Not A Religious One.......2003-04-27
This book is very detailed and 'concise'. The two readers who have reviewed it looked at it as a religious book, when really it is a brilliant historical account of the basic religions of the world. And looked at from that perspective, it deserves 5 stars, because you can never detect any biasedness while reading it. You can't tell what religion the writers belong to, which gives this book a distance which is necessary when studying one of the greatest emotional tools of the world: religion.
But how do these religions effect people's lives?.......2001-07-16
The title of this book, "The Harpercollins Concise Guide to World Religions," seems to be a bit of a misnomer. While it is great as a concise historical reference, it says almost nothing about the teachings of each religion. For example, the section on Christianity gives a splended account of the historical devopement of various denominations and factions, but it doesn't tell us what the Ten Commandments are, or what a Christian beileves he or she must do to get to heaven. In other words, religious values and morals are not discussed in this book to any meaningful extent, which dissapointed me quite a bit. Various conceptions of a particular divine being might be described, but we are left to wonder how a believer might apply a particular conception to their daily life. To me, this book seems to "miss the point." The fact that one of the authors lauds the book's successes in its introduction really makes one wonder. Having said that, however, I would like to repeat that this book is valuable as a quick historical reference.
Far too clinical in approach...........2001-06-06
Rather than a well written and enlightened book about the world's religions, this book is excrutiatingly difficult read. It is more like a graduate student's thesis with references interrupting the flow of every other sentence. I found this book very disappointing in style, organization, and with too much information about religions that don't exist anymore. The content is there, but it is too difficult to dissect..... Find another guide that will help you understand the similarities/diffences in the world's religions. This one doesn't cut it.

Book Description
Chester County is one of the three original counties formed in 1682 in southeastern Pennsylvania by William Penn under Charter signed by King Charles II. The greatest number of settlers after 1682 came from the British Isles, and so the architecture they created bears out their mostly British roots. This survey includes homes, barns, out buildings, and commercial properties built here from the county's 17th century beginnings through the 19th century. Thousands of original source documents were examined to build the text and factual lists contained here. Hundreds of overall and detail photographs and select plan drawings are included to illustrate a few of the buildings.
Book Description
The essence and aura of North American wildlife is fully captured with these scenic patterns that cover an expansive range of topics, from fish and fowl, to larger animals such as elk and bear, to beautiful landscapes. Chapters address the basics of copying patterns by comparing hardwood to plywood, covering the details of drilling, and analyzing finishing techniques. Both beginning and advanced scrollers will enjoy the easy-to-follow instructions and clear, computer-generated outlines of these 25 full-size patterns.

Great Book.......2007-05-18
This book is great. You can combine the different patters so you can make more than are actually given. The patterns are easy - and give a great finished project

A Ripping Good Yarn.......2000-06-08
Peter Caddy was a man of many talents, a natural-born leader whose adventures during the war, climbing the Himilayas, running a Scottish hotel, then founding and leading an alternative spiritual community and becoming a world traveler and teacher make for fascinating reading. As they used to say, this is an exciting, "ripping good yarn" about a man who dedicated his whole life to God and to the emergence of a better world for humanity. This book is extremely fun to read and comes highly recommended for anyone interested in modern alternative spiritual and esoteric movements, the New Age, Rosicrucians, spiritual communities, or just a good biography. The last chapter was written by Peter's new wife after he was killed in an automobile accident and contains more of her perspective and philosophy than his, even going so far as to turn his life into an object lesson on the greatness of her particular Indian guru and making Caddy seem like an Eastern devotee rather than the initiate of the Western Mystery Tradition that he was, but if you ignore all that, you will be treated to a wonderful story about a remarkable human being.
