Book Description
Leila Murry is young, married, and working in a motel as a receptionist - and then as a prostitute. The seemingly random abuses and perils of her adult life parallel those Leila suffered as a child, and in reliving them she is uncertain whether she will survive them this time, or indeed, if she wishes to. This "extremely powerful debut" tells a story that is at once "profoundly disturbing but also resonant with hope and rebirth" -Los Angeles Times.
Customer Reviews:
Five stars for vivid imagery, masterful use of metaphor, poetic prose..........2007-03-08
I gave this five stars because, quite simply, it belongs in the category of Great Literature. She's right up there with Joyce Carol Oates, one of my favorites. And Mary McGary Morris, another great. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is her ability to control what I might call the "erotic" factor. In early chapters in which Leila is turning tricks at the hotel, the encounters with men are not in any way erotic; they are mechanical, dull-sounding, unappealing, in fact, they are icky. However, when she describes her sex-addict mother and philandering uncle's affair, the sex comes alive; it's stimulating, arousing. I believe it's because the writer understands that for children, sexuality is always arousing - children are sexually naive and at the same time more primal beings, which is why violent or inappropriate sex can be so traumatizing for them, as it was for the young Leila. And with time, as the book progresses, the sex becomes different yet again: more brutal and frantic, but less automatic; Leila is definitely coming undone, and that is not necessarily a bad thing, because the novel indicates that things are rising to a spiritual boiling point. I did agree with one reviewer here who said the similes and metaphors began to get repetitive and a bit too grim (or, if you will, "depressing." I found myself cringing at yet another bird carcass, bloody feathers, drowned furry creature, eyes staring out of skeletal bones, just that whole ugly death thing that went on and on and on. Warning to future readers: do not read this book with your dinner. Still, it kept me (if reluctantly) right up to the end. But I gotta say, once again - this writer is masterful when it comes to metaphor. I found myself thinking WOW! Can she write! In fact, the writer who came to mind most often was Egyptian Nobel winner Nagib Mafouz, another writer who can sling metaphors that make you shake your head in disbelief - how the heck did he do that? Kudos to Ms. Kassischke.
Excellent Work.......2004-06-15
I read a review, one of the short reviews in the in the New Yorker that are more descriptive than judgemental, many years ago. I only remembered it was intriguing but I bought it recently and read it on this vacation (I am in Mexico as I write). I agree with some reviews that have compared it with Joyce Carol Oates but I would also throw in some other gritty books; Laplante's Cold Shoulder (she wrote the original scripts for the hit TV show Prime Suspect) and Amis' Night Train. The book alternates between the rugged life the central character lives today and her tortured past that continues to haunt her. And yes, have we discussed that she is a poet? I don't have an background in literature and I don't really know anything about poetry (though some of my best friends are poets) but it would appear as though poets do have an excellent command of our language and can use it to great advantage. So if you like grit and you like a talented writer please check this out.
I wanted to point out that Ms. Kasischke spoke at the 1999 Michigan Writers Series. Her discussion of this book and some of her poetry can be found via a search for the Michigan State University Libraries.
A haunting story.......2003-07-22
Although I finished this book several months ago the story of Leila's life has stayed with me. This book is full of haunting dialogue, rich descriptions, interesting characters. Truly writing at its best! I adore books by Laura Kasischke and wish there were more novels by this amazing author.
Brilliant, A Model Book for Teaching Writing.......2003-01-21
I often use the opening line of this book as an example in creative and memoir writing classes that I teach of how an author can immediately capture the reader. This book keeps you breathlessly involved:the extraordinary language, its simplicity, the compelling character. A stunning novel, or novelized memoir?
Great Novel.......2002-10-17
A nearly perfect novel; a rare mixture of beautiful writing and logical, original story. It's clear Kasischke honed her skill as a poet; the language is just that concise. The opening paragraph is one of the best I've ever read. I was hooked from that moment on. Highly recommended.

Product Description
Suspicious River is a mesmerizing page-turner spun by award-winning poet Laura Kasischke. As her debut novel, its riveting language and astonishing imagery have received critical acclaim from reviewers across the nation. With the unerring touch of a consummate artist, Kasischke paints a haunting portrait of youthful Lelia Murray, a married, small town desk clerk who moonlights as a prostitute. Lelia shares memories of her perilous childhood and promiscuous adolescence. But at the same time she weaves them into a dark narrative of her nameless clients and her growing bondage to a sweetly seductive con man. Ultimately, her life becomes a modern allegory of the American fascination with violence and sex. Although Kasischkes novel shows ominous forces at work, it also creates a world of beauty and grace, tenderness and honesty. Lelias poignant voice, richly interpreted by narrator Alyssa Bresnahan, will stay with you long after the last words die away.

In volume one of Irene Radford's magnificent new saga, Merlin's Descendants, Merlin's daughter, Wren, is more powerful than even The Merlin can perceive. And she must learn to master these talents, for soon she will be called upon to serve as both sword and shield for The Merlin, for Arthur, and for the people who would be put in her charge....

Customer Reviews:
Not just historical fiction -- Spiritual fiction!.......2004-09-26
As it has been a few years since I first read "Guardian of the Balance", I decided to reread the first 3 books before finally diving into the 4th and final in the series. I came back to Amazon.com to browse the reviews of all 4 books, and I realized that one aspect of "Guardian of the Balance" was missing from the reviews -- Spirituality.
As a Wiccan, I enjoyed reading a story that so thoroughly incorporates the essence and practices of pagan spirituality. Respecting the forces of nature (particularly the four elements) and celebrating the Wheel of the Year was an important practice, not only to The Merlin and Wren, but also to villagers and warriors alike. Unless I am mistaken, the only sabbat that was never mentioned by name was Lughnasadh (Lammas). Throughout the story, we see the importance of the Spring and Fall equinoxes, the Summer and Winter Solstices, Imbolc, Beltane, and Samhain in the lives of these characters. Additionally, the dedication required to learn how to work true magic, and the toll that working such magic takes on the practitioner, is well described. As is the fact that in order for the universe to keep in balance, all magic comes with consequences, some of which may be undesirable.
Ms. Radford handled the conflicts between "the old ways" and the budding Christianity delicately and with respect to both forms of spirituality. While some characters (such as Carradoc and Archbishop Dyfrig) fought outright against any who held beliefs different from theirs, other characters (such as Wren and Father Tom) learned to value the similarities of their faiths and to respect individuals for their own worth. And yet other characters (such as Arthur and Kalahart) seemed torn between the old and new faiths.
Whether or not you like Ms. Radford's writing style; whether or not you approve of her adaptation of the legend and her handling of the characters; whether or not you find the sexuality appropriate or overdone; if you are interested in earth-based religions or follow a pagan path yourself, you might enjoy seeing pagan spirituality brought to life in the everyday existence of these characters.
I've read much better.......2002-11-16
I'm usually a sucker for Arthurian Legends and was happy to discover this one. The idea to have the story told by Merlin's daughter is pretty cool - but not totally original. (Joan Wolfe's The Road to Avalon has Merlin's daughter as the main character. That book was ok. Better than this one). But to my dismay, the writing was poor, the characters not at all defined, and the book overall felt flat. I tried to read it fully but started skimming after a couple hundred pages.
The descriptions of Wren's budding sexuality are pretty hysterical. Certain body parts are jiggling, clothes are chafing against them and other parts, and she keeps staring at certain body parts of others. I'm trying to keep this rating PG. Wren keeps wanting to get down on bel-tine and when she thinks of the festival these reactions start happening. And it all starts before she's 13! After being bemused the first couple of times, I just started laughing. The fact that several lines referring to certain body parts are repeated over and over made it even funnier. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the effect the author wanted to have on her readers.
If you are a fanatic and must read every Arthurian legend out there, then perhaps its worth reading this novel. But otherwise, you wouldn't miss anything by skipping it...
A new take on an old story.......2002-07-03
I enjoyed this book immensely. I thought that it was very refreshing. Most of the Arthur accounts are told differently, but this is from the viewpoint of Merlin's daughter, a voice not previously heard. As such, I think that's part of the appeal. Obviously, the major themes in the story--sword in the stone, Gwenevere & Lancelot's betrayal, and Merlin's advice are the same. It's just the perspective has changed.
Wren grew up with Arthur, Lancelot, Cai and the other Companions. They were her friends as she was traveling the length & breadth of Britain with her father. Soon, she was taken to Avalon to train as a priestess. However, the needs of the outerworld summoned her and she left Avalon to assist the Merlin. She comes to face her love of Arthur, the forced marriage to Carradoc, and betrayal by those closest to her father and Arthur. She also grows into her own role of advisor and mistress of her own household.
Keep an open mind and be ready for the differences that await.
Cool idea, but-.......2001-09-24
I think that the author had a really excellent idea, but I don't think it was developed very well. There were parts of it that didn't really make sense to me, like how Morgaine, who is in most cases called the Fairy, was against fairies. But there were also parts that were fully engrossing and I really enjoyed. To me, it read like a first draft. It was, however, one of the few King Arthur stories that I could stand to read all the way through. I would have liked to see Arylwren as a slightly more flawed character- she seemed too perfect and benign to be true, while everyone else was a bit of a mess. I think it had gaps, as well. I don't think I would recommend it to other people, but if you enjoy King Arthur tales, then maybe you'll find it better that I found it.
Deaply moving, fabulous writing -- EXCELLENT BOOK!!.......2000-12-01
I have never before read an Irene Radford book -- oh what I've been missing! Ms. Radford's writing is so fabulous, that you can actually feel the ground beneath your feet when she describe's Wren's contact with nature.
This not just a retelling of the Arthur story, so much more! It goes deeply into the heart of the main character, Merlin's daughter Wren. You learn to care about what happens to her and how she feels -- truly the mark of good writing!
I highly recommend this book to anyone -- fantasy reader as well as all those who enjoy good fiction. Buy it, read it, you'll be glad you did!

Great book for all........2000-10-16
This book is a great book for all. It covers issues such as coping with the death of a loved one, sibling rivalry, and pressure put on children to do beyond their very best at any cost. Even though it's written at a lower reading level, I think adults can still learn a thing or two from it. It reminds us all that God loves us and that He's there watching over us, and that we don't always have to work so hard to try to deserve it. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the show Touched by an Angel, and anyone who doesn't!
Good Reader.......2000-05-31
This is a good, short read. I would recommend it to readers of all ages and stages of life.

But to face enemy with only black void and thin sheet of hullmetal separating you from disruptorsand then stay in formationthat is kind of bravery we Sodeskayans record in Great Books."

Great Book !!.......2007-02-26
Ohhhh I want more of this series!! I finished it in about 15 hours of reading(about 3 days and an all nighter) Could not put it down..
An upbeat, galaxy-spanning adventure.......2004-03-07
The second novel in Bill Baldwin's heady sci-fi "Helmsman Saga", Galactic Convoy is an action-packed saga filled from cover to cover with intrigue, deadly spaceship battles, and abiding bonds of friendship forged through troubled times. An upbeat, galaxy-spanning adventure, as thrilling as the futuristic cover art by Hugo Award winning author/artist Ron Miller, Galactic Convoy documents Bill Baldwin as a master of the science fiction action/adventure genre and a welcome read for any and all sci-fi enthusiasts!
New and updated.......2003-11-24
As of November, 2003 this book has been published in a new directors cut edition, in hardback. The original book was one of my favorite of all time, and this time Bill Baldwin has greatly imporved the story, cleaning up a few loose ends and fleshing out some of the other parts of the story. I have always felt this was the best book of the series and this version is even better! In this book, Wilf, and his comrades Uris, Barbousse and the rest are in a new starship, helping to guard convoys bringing needed suppies to a giant base in another part of the universe, and both the convoys and the base are under constant attack by Nergol Triannic's evil forces. It strikes me as if based on the British convoys to beleagured Malta in the Med in WWII. An exciting story, lots of combat, a new romantic interest, new shipmates, just a dang good entertaining fantasy/scifi novel!
An old favorite.......1999-12-27
This was my first Baldwin book, and because of that, probably one of my favorites. I paid 99cents for this book, and it quickly prompted me to find and buy the other books in the series.
Baldwin continues to develop the character of Wilf Brim, as well as the universe in which he lives. This development stage quickly levels off in the series, but in Galactic Convoy it's done very well both with the characters and the technology.
This book (as would others in the series) does very well as a stand-alone as well. You need not have read the first book to know what was going on. This a great contrast from writers such as Robert Jordan who write one long story. With Baldwin you can pick up any book in the series and it's a whole story, and while you may not get some of the references, it's still an enjoyable read.
The Helmsman begins his career in fine fashion........1997-05-03
In the fine tradition of C.S. Forester, Baldwin begins to flesh out the career of Lt Wilf Brim, Imperial Fleet. Started in 'The Helmsman' Baldwin crafts the tale of Wilf's rise in fortune as a fleet officer. Baldwin builds Brim's character carefully and gives a good leg up on the plot at the same time. Though the plot is simplistic, it reflects the time honored tale of men at sea (or space) going into 'harms way' for the sake of others.
Though occasionally laced with mature discriptions of Wilf's love life, the story line is a good balance between discriptive technical displays of flying a starship and living in the Imperial Fleet.
This is a good read and a good foundation for the continuing saga of the Helmsman

Dissappointed in the recipes.......2007-08-31
The Low GI Diet Cook book is nicely organized and illustrated. The problem is that there are ingredients in so many of the recipes that my family will not eat and some that I have to pass on. The best way for me to use this cookbook is to modify the recipes as I use them. Then, some of them just can not be changed due to core ingredients.
Perhaps this book is due to the more varied palette. I still think that it does give some good ideas.
Not Simple at All.......2007-07-20
This book had some very interesting receipes, but most were not even close to be simple.
Good healthy food!.......2007-06-13
Lovely large format and pictures make you hungry! Recipes have easy to obtain ingredients, and times to prep and cook are listed. It will be fun to use.
OK.......2007-06-08
Desserts look good, but some of the entrees look weird. Like the diet though.
Low GI Recipes are TASTY!.......2007-06-01
I found the recipes in here VERY manageable and delicious. It has been such an easy transition to this new eating style and these books that were recommended by my Dermatologist have been an excellent source of information and reference. I will definitely purchase the other GI books that relate to my current conditions!

Book Description
In 1904, Kentucky socialite Minnie C. Fox published The Blue Grass Cook Book with over three hundred recipes to celebrate the cuisine of the Bluegrass State. In the book, Fox gives the first known credit for southern hospitality to African American cooks. In Fox's time, the culinary history of black women in the South was usually characterized by demoralizing portraits of servants toiling in "big house" kitchens. In contrast, The Blue Grass Cook Book, with its photographs of African American cooks at work and a passionate introduction by Fox's brother, respected Kentucky novelist John Fox Jr., offers insight into the complex bond between well-to-do mistresses and their cooks at the turn of the century.
A new introduction by Toni Tipton-Martin adds historical context to this neglected classic and offers a nuanced portrait of a unique and now-vanished culinary culture.

Customer Reviews:
Well written and easy to follow........2007-10-07
I've been using Lightroom 1.2 and Adobe Elements 3 and just started to move into Photoshop CS3, and was fortunate to find this book that (kind of) takes you by the hand and leads you through CS3. I like the in depth introduction that includs histograms and the way that a foundation for CS3 is set up for nature photographers. It is all presented in a simple and easy to understand way. What I also liked was that I can see that CS3 (in my humble opinion) makes a fine plug-in for Lightroom and I will probably never use Adobe Bridge. Sometimes a question would pop into my mind over what I was reading; a few lines later my question was answered. I needed this excellent book.
Nature Photographers Photoshop CS3 - A Very Good Book.......2007-09-23
PRO: I generally agree with the previous favorable reviews of the book and therefore, rate the book with four stars - not perfect but covering most of the important subjects for nature photography. I'm glad I purchased the book. The TRY IT work lessens in each chapter are helpful because you learn by practice, but it may take a little time to locate where your told to go if your not already familiar with photoshop. This is my first and only book on photoshop and I don't believe I will need another book on this subject for a long time.
CON:The books author makes some assumptions about the readers photoshop knowledge that may not always be correct. This is unavoidable. As mentioned earlier in one of the responses, the book binding is not very strong, so if you scan pages try not to lay the opposite page flat on the scanner, the pages will come loose from the string binding.
I am an italian amateur.......2007-08-30
I have added this very nice book to my already rich collection of Photoshop books because I was mainly attracted
by the concept of Nature that was missing in my arsenal, and because I wished learning more about the new
features of Photoshop CS3 ( that I've recently bought), such as Adobe Camera Raw, Smart Objects, Quick Selection Tool,
and the new Panorama tool.
Under its very appealing graphic appearance I found all the responses I've expected, every topic being
exposed in a natural and direct way.
I also found very useful the tutorials and the examples on the accompanying CD, as well
as the contents of the Authors' Web Sites.
I recommend this book to everybody willing go deeper into the art if photographic imaging, to the experts as well as the novices
on Photoshop CS3.

Essential Book for Serious Nature Photographers.......2007-07-27
Whether you are new to nature shooting or experienced, Ellen Anon and Tim Grey's book is sure to provide techniques, insights, and tips that you can put to use immediately and with excellent results. The authors take time to thoroughly explain complex concepts and techniques in easy-to-understand language and with excellent background that deepens your understanding of both the art and the science.
One of the primary advantages of this book is that it takes you step-by-step from exposing images in the field, through exposure and color adjustments in the digital darkroom, and finally to getting the best output on the printer. And as a bonus, this book includes great techniques for creative effects and for saving time during the workflow.
This is a must-have book for serious nature photographers--and for anyone who wants a complete guide to shooting, processing, and printing great digital images.

Tremendous Book! Essential information!.......2007-07-19
For any serious amateur to pro level photographer, this is a "no-brainer" book to own.
Ellen and Tim do a great job breaking down the software barriers to make our digital work easier
to conceive and to perform.
There is a wealth of information here.
After years of trying (unsuccessfully) to get through software manuals and books, this is the first book that we actually keep on our coffee table and take with us on the road. Even a perfunctory paging through will yield invaluable information in a concise, lucid prose.
Highly recommended!

Rich color photos show how working with the key elements -- plaster, masonry, wood, metal, ceramics, textiles and fibers -- can enhance the feel of every room in the house and create luxurious accents we can change on a whim.

Customer Reviews:
Almost Like the "On the Road" Series.......2000-05-08
I enjoyed listening to this audiocassette. I find that the journalist's job is one of the most intriguing. Kuralt explains one of his early first assignments in the beginning of the book, and works up to some of his favorite stories that he had covered during his stint with CBS.
Although this book may not be as exciting as watching it on video, his biography is one that shouldn't be missed if you are interested in the field of journalism & writing.
