5 out of 5 stars The Spanish Chauser.......2004-04-03

This is the translation of a Spanish book by an archpriest. It was then consisdered by many to be vulgar, but Elisha Kane, the translator of this volume found it to be most interesting and, with his brillant translation, shows the reader how so. It is full of wit and makes a wide use of play on words.

It is the story of a busybody named Trotaconventos who sticks his nose into other people's business - especially when it involves love. He tells of a clergyman who gets involved with a woman. The book questions the distinction between sacred and romantic love. Should a man of the church be above reproach?

Kane has illustrated the rhyming quatrains with impish cartoons. Kane was a professor of Romance Languages when he did the translation.

3 out of 5 stars Good material, but there's just something missing here.......2005-05-15

Irene Radford has written a number of dragon-related novels, but The Hidden Dragon, Book one of The Stargods series, is basically serving as my introduction to her work - so I can't compare this to her earlier Dragon Nimbus series entries. This particular novel is entertaining and features a couple of fascinating magical creatures, but several things marred my enjoyment of the story.

The three O'Hara brothers (Loki, Konner, and Kim) are running one final smuggling mission for their Mum when authorities descend upon their spaceship. In desperation, the Brothers make an uncoordinated hyperspace jump, winding up in the vicinity of an unclassified planet that appears green with vegetative life. In their own world, nature is largely a thing of the past, and the brothers know that their own private planet full of naturally grown food could net them a fortune in the domed, bio-controlled world they come from. They basically have no real choice about landing, as their narrow escape from authorities resulted in significant damage to their ship. Setting foot on the lush planet, the brothers find a world that had been partially terraformed at some point in the past. It is populated by a society of primitive men and women led by a bloodthirsty high priest, Hanassa, who demands blood sacrifices for the dragon god Simurgh. The head-strong brothers destroy the hateful altar of sacrifice, decry Hanassa's lust for blood and power, and soon split the population into opposing tribes. Hanassa sees many of his villagers leave to follow these new Stargods who arrived on a white dragon - including Hestiia, the young lady he covets for himself. None of this makes this evil fellow very happy.

This world is a magical place. The brothers confront the impossible when they meet up with a dragon and a flying cat that seem to communicate with one another. Stranded on the planet for at least several months, the brothers take it upon themselves to help their new followers survive and prosper - initially out of self-interest on their part. Of course, they form a bond with the people as time goes on - and they have to defend their villagers from the constant challenges of Hanassa and his stalwart magical powers. The brothers find magic of their own with which to meet the challenge, as their natural psi abilities are magnified greatly in this alien environment. The bulk of the story revolves around the brothers' conflicted emotions over their prior commitments to their distant mother and their new commitments to these primitive villagers who look upon them as gods.

Radford's plot is a little repetitive: the brothers are attacked by Hanassa's warriors, they seemingly kill the dangerous high priest, and then a short while later the whole thing just repeats itself. The brothers themselves also aren't fully-developed characters in my mind. I oftentimes had trouble distinguishing one from another, and there were many occasions when one said something I would have expected another one to say. Their motivations are also somewhat suspect - even though Radford goes on and on about the brothers' obligations to their Mum back home. They seemed to have the same conversation on a regular basis, and the moralizing that goes on every time they have Hanassa in their clutches but refuse to take a human life grows old (and foolish) after their first couple of violent encounters. There isn't much of a sense of closure as the novel ends, either, giving the reader the impression that this tiresome pattern is only going to be repeated anew in the next volume of the series. Additionally, the dragon plays less of a role here than you might reasonably expect, the flying cat all but disappears midway through the story, and none of the other characters (apart from Hestiia) are all that interesting. Radford's attempts to introduce humor into the story, especially in the brothers' dialogue, also don't come across all that effectively.

Reading this novel, I just felt as if some important dimension was missing. The story retained my interests, and I basically liked the characters, but I never felt connected with this world or its inhabitants. There is definitely enough material here for a successful series, but I think the author just needs to sit back and let the story tell itself.

2 out of 5 stars I have to agree with MitchDennis.......2003-09-03

Although the imagery was colorful, the writing was weak. It grew so tiresome to read on about their struggles to almost kill their nemesis. Every time they could have finished the job, there were objections about how wrong it is to kill any living thing (even those bent on your own destruction). And the mentions of how the most civilized of us have eschewed meat as a source of food. Over and over again these themes were vocalized as major plot points and character values. I for one get sick of being bludgeoned with someone's personal opinions when I'm trying to read a book for fun. I don't think I'll be continuing with this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Fantasy lovers..........2002-08-13

This was the first of Irene Radford's books I had read. It kept me glued to the pages until I had finished the book. I enjoyed it enough to immediately purchase all 4 of the books in The Dragon Nimbus series.

SIDE NOTE: For anyone who is looking for another good fantasy series, try the books by David Eddings. I recommend starting with the series The Belgariad (book 1 is entitled Pawn of Prophesy). The story is Tolkien-esq but with an easier-to-read style. I own 16 of his books, and they've all been read until the covers are falling off!

      4 out of 5 stars Good, but..........2002-03-24

I found a good many grammatical errors, most of which were in punctuation (i.e. periods where question marks should be, etc). There were a few other errors, as well, but the book as a whole was pretty good. Not quite as high quality as her other two Dragon Nimbus series, however. It seemed to lack something. Nevertheless, it was a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Generally weak, but vaguely entertaining.......2002-03-19

"The Hidden Dragon" (Volume 1 of The Stargods) is a mixture of science fiction and fantasy and somewhat fails in both genres.

Three brothers with latent psychic abilities are attacked in their spaceship by the authorities. They manage to escape and limp to the nearest planet with an acceptable atmosphere, hoping to find the resources they need to repair their ship. When they arrive, they find a primitive society, apparently the descendants of a lost colony.

To their amazement, the O'Hara brothers find that the planet supports dragons, a mystical race of powerful beings who have, for the most part, remained aloof from the humans. Until now. In the past, one of their own acquired the taste for human flesh and had to be destroyed. Another outcast wants to control the human race.

Although the O'Hara brothers just want to collect the elements they need and leave, they become caught up in the fate of this world.

The characterization is rather weak. The three brothers are almost indistinguishable from one other and all have similar names which just adds to the confusion. Radford doesn't supply any firm motivations for their actions; this became irritating at times. The motivation of the villain is particularly flat. Why does he want to kill everyone? He seems to be interested in acquiring and using power; if he kills everyone, who is left to worship him? The few potentially interesting individuals (the fiery Hestiia and the mysterious flywacket Gentian) are discarded or muted about halfway through the book.

Also, Radford doesn't pretend to be subtle in her storytelling. She continually "hints" at things until you want to scream "Ok, Ok, I get it now!!"

But, for those of us who enjoy a bit of diverting adventure, the book does fulfill that requirement.

Readers of Radford's other series, "The Dragon Nimbus" and "The Dragon Nimbus History" will thrill to find familiar names and places: Simurgh, Hanassa, Yaakke, the Stargods, and the genesis of the nation of Coronnin.

Expect a cliffhanger...after all it is only volume one.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 4th volume from an alien viewpoint: Prilicla.......2002-05-19

Sadly, this is the last Sector General story, published posthumously.

After _Star Healer_, White never again used Conway as the viewpoint character. This story is from the viewpoint of his old friend Prilicla, the spider-like empath, who like Conway has been groomed for years (without his knowledge) for eventual Diagnostician status, if only he can overcome his empath's aversion to being assertive, with the subsequent risk of having unpleasant emotional radiation turned back on him. (In other stories Prilicla is referred to as a neuter "it", in keeping with polite cross-species standards, but from his own viewpoint he's referred to as "he".)

After all these years, White still finds new things to tell us about Prilicla, especially from his point of view: the only member of his species at Sector General. For instance, we always knew that he was fragile, but did you know that he uses up so much energy that every few hours he *has* to sleep? (He'll pass out on duty otherwise, but everyone knows it so it doesn't happen.) His empathic talent is exceptionally strong even for his own people; and by his own standards, he thinks he's pretty well crazy, from a culture where cowardice is considered necessary for sanity. Mind you, he doesn't *care*; life on Cinruss was boring. :)

Prilicla is still assigned to Rhabwar, having taken over when Conway was promoted, and due to the nature of interstellar travel, Rhabwar in its job of answering distress calls is the most frequent means of making first contact with newly encountered starfaring species. On the present occasion, Rhabwar will make not one, but two first contacts. The first such contact, with the Trolanni, involves a civilization from a world wherein the ecology has been damaged to the point that it no longer really supports life; the Trolanni blame another group on their planet, the druul, but that's only their side of the story. Unfortunately, to Trolanni eyes, while Prilicla isn't frightening, humans *are* - Trolanni think they look like druul.

It should be said that while White's galactic civilization has a non-interference directive of sorts, it's tempered by intelligence and good sense. On several occasions, having discovered a culture that hasn't achieved starflight but is in severe distress, a planet has been declared a disaster area and relief has been sent, rather than letting people die needlessly. Granted, this has been known to go wrong, sometimes spectacularly (see _The Genocidal Healer_), but at least they err on the side of compassion.

4 out of 5 stars A solid addition to the series.......2000-08-23

If you are a fan of the Sector General series then you will welcome the latest addition. As usual it presents a first contact situation but this time with not one but two new races at the same time. Interestingly the story this time is told from the point of view of Dr Prilicla and offers some new insights into this character which has formerly offered support without taking the central role.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Book............2000-02-12

Another wonderful book from James White in his Sector General Series. Unfortunately,he passed away right after the book was written. The Sector General novels have been great fun to read, reminding me of the "old" sci-fi style of books. What made his book so interesting was the mix of aliens in his books and how they worked together in a medical setting to help other species. Some of his ideas were great! If you get a chance to read this book, I say start from the beginning of the series if you can get the books and enjoy yourself. This is his last book and I am sad to think another Sector General novel will not happen since he has passed away. Bless him!

"No one weaves a tribal story quite like Robert Conley. Conley's books are entertaining, colorful, and chock-full of tribal history and culture."--Wilma P. Mankiller, former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation

Few writers portray Native American life and history as richly, authentically, and insightfully as Robert J. Conley, an important voice of the Cherokee past. The novels in his Real People series combine powerful characters, gripping plots, and vivid descriptions of tradition and mythology to preserve Cherokee culture and history.

In this, the fourth novel of Robert J. Conley's saga of the Real People, Carrier, a young Cherokee trader, comes of age during his first solo trip to the Timucua. The Way South narrates Carrier's efforts to forge an alliance of southern tribes against an incursion of Spanish explorers.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe 4 1/2. Very Good Choice for the Cookbook with everything.......2007-10-11

The `New Cookbook, 14th Edition' from `Better Homes and Gardens' is a heavyweight contender for best `if you have to have only one cookbook...' title, weighing in against the perennial champion, `The Joy of Cooking', now at its 75th Anniversary edition. The first of these contenders has been my mother's favorite for at least the last 40 years, and her original copy is so beat up (thus the purchase of a new edition), I can't even see the publication date on its binder, where the covers have literally fallen off the spine.
Looking at the bare figures, `Joy' would seem to be a clear winner, with almost twice (1132 versus 656) the number of pages and almost three times (4000 versus 1400) the number of recipes. Going one step deeper and comparing the Tables of Contents, `Joy' has 39 chapters to `Better Homes' 23 chapters, meaning that `Joy' gives some topics a highlighted treatment missing from `Better Homes'. And yet, `Better Homes' has things going for it, especially considering the fact that there are millions of people such as my mother who have been going to it for so many years.
`Better Homes' most obvious attribute is its 3 ring binder style, which means that every page will lay perfectly flat AND one can easily remove any page and photocopy it on an inexpensive home multipurpose copier / scanner / printer. No small consideration compared to `Joy's' sewn signatures which are a bit awkward if you are looking at candies at the end of the book or appetizers near the front of the book. This virtue is diminished just a tad by the fact that the binding is a non-standard size, not carried by your local Staples. (I looked, to try to replace the binder laying on my workbench in three pieces!). Another virtue associated with this design is the tabbed dividers for each section. This makes browsing to look for a nice egg recipe much easier than in `Joy'. The next obvious virtue is its color pictures. This is not a clear win, since `Joy's line drawings of how to techniques are often superior to `Better Homes' static pics.
`Better Homes', after over 40 years on the bookshelves, primarily succeeds at the one thing every `general purpose' cookbook must do well. It has good recipes for virtually every basic, and most of the not so basic preparations the average home cook will want to do in the kitchen in the course of a year. The only stock recipes I could not find was one for Genoise and one for the en papillote cooking technique. Not only do both appear in `Joy', but the Rombauer / Becker clan gives us two different recipes under both rubrics! But, `Better Homes' still has things going for it!
Looking at the layout, writing, and selection of recipes in `Better Homes', I find much that I like. Many standard recipes are provided with well-written variations, and especially variations I am really interested in trying, such as the blueberry variations on pancakes and muffins. There are also many full-blown parallel recipes when there are several classic ways for making a basic dish, such as biscuits, both rolled and cut and drop biscuits. I am also fond of how most of the recipes are written. Few details are overlooked, yet the writing is crisp and no nonsense direct and to the point. The one thing which will most appeal to the average home cook is that the book makes a point of using only familiar ingredients certain to appear even on the smaller local supermarket shelves. On the other hand, there is little or no holdover from the dark days of 1950s cooking making heavy use of canned or dried ingredients. On the other hand, canned mushrooms, mushroom soup, and hydrogenated shortening are not missing entirely and more than once I found recipes where butter does better than Crisco.
The two things which most impressed me were the overall selection of recipes and the excellent introductory chapter on `Cooking Basics'. There is an entire library of cookbooks who try to give a good treatment of this subject, and end up giving us just a short chapter of filler to pad out their standard 250 pages. `Better Homes' does it right, as befitting its `be all things' ambitions. The recipe selection is broad enough to appeal to even the more adventuresome home cook, with its recipes for breads, homemade pasta, and homemade salad dressings. My problem with some of the more elaborate recipes is that the product is almost certain to be not as good as what you get from a commercial source. The cinnamon bun recipe, for example, is not nearly as good as my standard from `Baking with Julia'. I was also skeptical of it's hot cross buns recipe, a preparation which is remarkably difficult, as baked goods go. Remarkably, `Joy' passes on both these recipes, reinforcing my belief that for these specialties, one will be far better off going to a book specializing in baking for an authoritative recipe.
IF I were limited to a single cookbook, my personal choice between these two is `Joy of Cooking', simply because it's recipes are just as good as `Better Homes', and there is more of it. But, if your family tradition belongs to `Better Homes and Gardens', you will not be disappointed by their offering.

                    5 out of 5 stars I LOOOOVE this book!.......2007-04-26

Since the very first minute that i have received this book i have fallen in love with it, it's very VERY useful! everytime i try a recipe people just fall in love with it and ask for the recipe!
i have a small shelf in my kitchen with the most useful and frequently used cookbooks, and this book is one of them! i seriously recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars It made a cook out of me!.......2007-04-01

I first came across this cookbook almost 10 years ago, when I was just learning how to cook western dishes [being from Singapore]...I must say that this has been the best investment in a cookbook for me. Its format is very user-friendly, and if you buy the spiral-bound version, you'll find it easy to flip through the recipes. The cookbook itself is divided into several sections, i.e. cooking basics, appetisers and snacks, beans, rice and grains, beverages, breads, cakes, candies, canning & freezing, cookies, crockery cooking, desserts, eggs & cheese, fish & shellfish, grilling, meat, pasta, pies & tarts, poultry, salads & dressings, sauces & relishes, soups & stews, vegetables & fruits. At the end of the cookbook, one will find a useful index & metric for referencing.

The other good feature of this cookbook is that it also lists recipes as healthy, low-fat, or best-loved which adds to its value as a good cooking reference. I would recommend this cookbook to any beginner cook,as the recipes are reliable not overly complicated and turn out pretty well.

                    4 out of 5 stars Everyone needs a cookbook like this....to start.......2007-01-23

I received this book while I was still in college and living in my own apartment for the first time. I can honestly say that this book was a wonderful teacher for me as I began to learn how to cook. The handy reference pages, including a substitutions guide, were always open on my kitchen counter. The cookbook's directions are easy to follow and often the pictures illustrate certain techniques. The special photo section at the back has plenty of tasty dishes, some a bit more ambitious for the cook.
Overall though, if you are looking for more exotic flavors and dishes, you should definitely expand your cookbook library out from this cookbook. The great thing about the New Cook Book is that it covers the standards in just about every category, but on the downside, some of these standards can be rather boring. Don't forget to mix it up.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Happy Anniversary To A Great Cook Book!.......2007-01-21

This book was given to me when I got my own apartment years ago. I used it faithfully all through the early years of my marriage too. I still refer to it as my cooking "bible." I think so much of it, I bought myself another one AND one for my daughter who recently got her own place. I just like the way it's put together and it's easy to understand and follow. Taught me how to keep my husband's appetite in check all these years.

Graham Kerr's Best is broken down into 3 parts: recipes that are less than 10% calories from fat - Creole Fish Dumplings, Blushing Chicken Fettuccine with Basic Tomato Sauce, Peppered Strawberries with Mint Sorbet; those that are around 20% - Coq Au Vin, Spaghetti Salmonara, Spiced Apple Pie; and another section with recipes under 30% - Orange-Braised Pork Chops, Tomato and Endive Salad, Fillet of Beef Benedict, giving the cook a wide variety of possibilities. The recipes are broken down into parts making even the most complex easy to follow. Most ingredients are available at your local grocer with footnotes on where to find the few items that are not. Kerr personalizes each recipe and offers a nutritional profile per serving as well as a time estimation to prepare each dish. Graham Kerr's Best is written by Graham Kerr and published by G. P. Putnam's Sons. Recommended for anyone looking to control their fat intake and maintain the high flavors of food. The book is separated into 3 parts giving each person a variety of possibilities to keep great health

As with all the other Antique Trader (AT) reference guides I've used, this one is a good, basic primer for the subject. Unfortunately, as with all AT guides, the lack of an index makes it tedious to search for specific items. It also tends, like all the other general AT guides, to attempt to include too many categories at the expense of including an adequate sample of items within each category. However, if this book happens to have just the item you're looking for, the photos and descriptions are well-done and the prices are reasonably accurate. Basically, it's a good general guide for someone who is attempting to gauge the general value of advertising items, but don't buy it with the express hope of finding a specific item.

                                Book Description

No one is more identified with the great events of our times than the distinguished and highly honored former CBS Evening News anchor Walter Cronkite. For more than half a century, Cronkite was there celebrating America's greatest achievements, and helping the nation and world through some of the most difficult times in history.

In Walter Cronkite Remembers, Cronkite recounts the journey of his life and his extraordinary career in broadcasting He gives a vivid account of his early days as a World War II correspondent at Normandy and Nuremberg. He retells the highlights of four decades spent behind the anchor desk at the CBS Evening News. When the United States landed on the moon, Cronkite brought us there and joined in a nation's patriotic astonishment. When Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, it was Cronkite who delivered the shocking news to the nation with compassion and empathy.

Using exceptional archival material, as well as intimate interviews at Cronkite's home, Cronkite Remembers takes us on a truly memorable odyssey through the great stories of our times.

This is a celebration of Cronkite's more than 50 years of journalism. Cronkite shares some of his early childhood memories with us, like how he got his first start in journalism- -selling papers on street corners. He traces his career through writing for newspapers and acting out baseball games on radio. He also tells us about the war years, when he covered the war in newsreels from Europe. He describes how, in the days before satellites, film footage of Queen Elizabeth's coronation had to be flown across the ocean before it could be broadcast on this continent. He reminisces about his relationship with each of the presidents from Hoover through Reagan- -just the fact that he met and worked with so many presidents is a great indicator of his reputation as journalist. But in all of these interviews, recorded with Cronkite, his family, and co-workers, Cronkite never comes across as being overbearing or egotistical.

Towards the end of this tape, Cronkite looks back and selects the most important stories that he covered. Among these are his famous opinion statement on Vietnam, when he set aside the goal of trying to remain objective and spoke his mind, based on what he saw on the ground in Vietnam. Later he talks about the Lunar landings, and how they left him unexpectedly speechless. For younger audiences, this could be an interesting overview of the main stories of the Twentieth Century. For older listeners, it's a walk down memory lane.

Don't confuse CRONKITE REMEMBERS with A REPORTER'S LIFE. The latter is a genuine memoir from TV's second greatest journalist (next to Edward R. Murrow). The former is a brief tape that breezes through events so quickly as to be wholly unsatisfying. Walter Cronkite has lived a long enough life and had a rich enough career to merit two autobiographies, but CRONKITE REMEMBERS is so superficially brief as to trivialize his career and the events he covered rather than add to our understanding of them. This isn't a terrible tape. It isn't unpleasant to listen to. I liked hearing Cronkite's voice, which I could only imagine while reading A REPORTER'S LIFE. But I was left wanting more - much, much more. That's why CRONKITE REMEMBERS merits a low rating. Skip this and get A REPORTER'S LIFE.

Walter Cronkite narrates his life, with comments from his friends and family. His life, however, is filled with special moments that make it very interesting. With humor and very personal opinions, he will take you from the day Kennedy was assassinated, to Russian bombs and Nazism, while at the same time providing insights about the American Presidents he met. In this narration, Cronkite shows a very human side, including comments about his mistakes while assessing news. I found this book very enjoyable to listen to, and if you have an interest in history, I think you will enjoy it too. Or as Cronkite would say: And that's the way it it!
