The past two decades have seen a dramatic resurgence of interest in black women writers, as authors such as Alice Walker and Toni Morrison have come to dominate the larger Afro-American literary landscape. Yet the works of the writers who founded and nurtured the black women's literary tradition--nineteenth-century Afro-American women--have remained buried in research libraries or in expensive hard-to-find reprints, often inaccessible to twentieth-century readers. Oxford University Press, in collaboration with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research unit of The New York Public Library, rescued the voice of an entire segment of the black tradition by offering thirty volumes of these compelling and rare works of fiction, poetry, autobiography, biography, essays, and journalism. Responding to the wide recognition this series has received, Oxford now presents four of these volumes in paperback. Each book contains an introduction written by an expert in the field, as well as an overview by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the General Editor. Individually, each of these four works now in paperback--including The Journals of Charlotte Forten Grimke, Elizabeth Keckley's Behind the Scenes: Or, Thirty Years a Slave, and Four Years in the White House, Six Women's Slave Narratives, and The Collected Works of Phillis Wheatley--stands as a unique literary contribution in its own right. Collectively providing a rich sampling of the range of works written by black women over the course of more than a century, they pay tribute (now long overdue) to an extraordinary and influential group of Afro-American women. These new editions will enable teachers, students, and general readers of American literature, history, Afro-American culture, and women's studies to hear at last, and learn from, the lost voice of the nineteenth-century black woman writer.

Another draconic masterpiece.......2005-05-07
For a while, I had been searching for this one book, the only one in the series that's the hardest to find and the book that explains how the beginning of Dragon at World's End begins. It was worth the search though as this is another great book of Rowley's. This one seemed to touch up more on the behavior and origin of the battledragons. As usual, the Purple Green, the biggest and strongest (and also the only wild) dragon does his best to entertain the reader with his amusing antics about food in the legions and in the wild. And Bazil and the other wyverns are right there to liven things up. Of course, when the battles against the enemy start, the dragons get serious. Christopher Rolwey describes the battles excellently.
If you're a fan of dragon/human relationship stories like me or just happen to be a lover of all things dragon, than get this book along with the other six in the series. I must warn you about one character: the new leader for Relkin's unit in this book is a real annoying loser to read about and sort of a waste of pages. Try not to be too turned off by his obnoxiousness.

This is a nother great book from the Bazil Broketail series. I have been reading science fiction and fantasy all my life, but these books are truly in a league of their own. Never will you see another series like this.
Battledragon in comparison with his other works........1998-07-01
Battledragon was an excellent book. It is a continuation of the Bazil Broketail series. It is not as good as the other five books because it lacks the drama the other books have. I rate all the other books 5 stars. Although my name is also the title of the book, it does not refer to this book alone, but all the books and the dragons themselves, being that they are "battledragons". I hope that Rowley writes a sequel to his last book, because there needs to be one.
An amazing novel with an original story and excellent plot........1998-06-30
WOW! I was hoping that this book would never end as I read it. This was truly the best book in the Bazil Broketail series and is one of the best books I have read from my second favorite author.(JRR Tolkien is my favorite). An excellent story with a tragic ending (until the next book), Battledragon was a very entertaining book.

This is definitely a good collection of stories, having no less than three with a 4.5 rating, and a 3.60 average overall. Golden Gryphon have a pretty nifty logo, too. It has an intro by Connie Willis, and a reasonably detailed afterword where Kelly describes the genesis of each of the stories.

One of the Best Single-Author-Collections of the Year........2003-05-28
James Patrick Kelly's second collection of stories (published by Golden Gryphon, a fine publisher) is a treasury of superbly crafted gems. 15 of them, actually, with a foreword by Connie Willis and an afterword by the author himself.
Highlights are 1016 to 1 (Hugo Winner, novelette category), Undone (Nebula nominee, Novelette category), and Glass Cloud. But nearly each story is insightful.

A marvelous book.......2002-11-03
Why has James Patrick Kelly not reached a mass-market audience? Why have his two short story collections been published by small print houses? "Why" has always been a difficult question to answer, but I believe there are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is his relatively slow writing pace. American audiences demand things that are NEW; new films, new books, new television shows. As Charles Dickens said, any book you haven't read before is new. If you've never read The Pearl by John Steinbeck, or Animal Farm by George Orwell, why aren't they considered new?
And so, ranting aside, I present unto you my review of James Patrick Kelly's wonderful collection of short stories, Strange but Not a Stranger. By turns witty, funny, insightful, frightening, and intense, the word that practically springs to mind that describes the collection is entertaining. Your attention quotient, as Connie Willis duly noted in the introduction, will be at a constant peak. Thus, I present as evidence for my cause: "Hubris," "The Propagation of Light in a Vacuum," "10^16 to 1," "Undone."
But where is the description of these aforementioned stories, you ask? Where are the cleverly placed lines of wit, the insightful comments? As with all James Patrick Kelly stories, you have to read it to believe it. But be forewarned: reading these stories is merely half of the journey, for the stories have hidden meanings that will haunt you until you're sure you've figured them out, sure that you've gotten your full money's worth out of them, and suddenly, without warning, they come at you again with another viewpoint or idea for consideration. To put it succinctly, and to practically make the rest of this review obsolete, this book is worthy of a spot on your bookshelf. Enough said.

Today's Modern All-Purpose Cookbook.......2007-09-02
Along with Jean Anderson's THE NEW DOUBLEDAY COOKBOOK, Mark Bittman's HOW TO COOK EVERYTHING is it's contemporary equivalent as essential cookbook references. Not quite as detailed as Anderson, it is however, a big-fat, recipe-stuffed miracle of a book. Lately Bittman has begun to take himself far too seriously. He seems to revel in the fact that he isn't not a trained chef or didn't go to culinary school--that he is completely self taught. I don't care how he learned to cook. He's practical, intuitive, always on the prowl for good flavor in a dish, and has a reassuring and supportive voice as he guides the cook through a recipe. I also find I turn to Bittman as one of the final authorities on a classic recipe. Generally speaking he uses fewer ingredients, and his writing is so concise, I'm never in doubt. For instance--I recently was looking for a recipe for coffee ice cream that I wanted to adapt by adding one more ingredient. I tried a number of recipes in my collection for the best coffee ice cream before turning to Bittman, and his was by far, the best. Along with his weekly column of in The New York Times, HOW TO COOK EVERYTHING shows what a smart cook Bittman is, and I recommend it without any reservations.
Simple Recipes for Great Food.......2007-08-30
The subtitle really sums it up. This book just does not let me down, either for specific recipes or as a jumping-off point with ideas, techniques, ingredients, or menus. My only two negative points are: the binding is not of the highest quality; I had to buy myself a second copy after several years of heavy use, because the first one completely fell apart. And there is no conversion table (as in, "3 tbs = 1/4 c" etc). But this book really is worth 5 stars. It's a good housewarming gift too.

Good cookbook to get as a reference, particularly for veggies and fruits. The bread making section is also great. Gives a lot of tips for using the food processor as well. No pictures of finished products prevents from getting 5 stars.

Easy to read, full of great recipes and tons of food trivia. There's also a section in the back with quick-fix meals and suggested menus for different occasions.
The style of the book is great for a beginner OR for someone looking to have a go-to recipe for just about anything. A fabulous resource for any kitchen.

I have many doll reference books and this one is great. Although it is not really a price guide. It does have great color pictures and has a great history of the Arranbee dolls. A beaufiful book. It is worth having in your collection.

The tittle says quick and easy. And they are. There are many motifs that can be used as decorations on clothing, or hanging from a tree. If you are pressed for time, and need a gift these patterns work up quickly. There is a good variety for the beginner and the experienced lace maker. I enjoyed doing the Christmas ordaments since I needed several in a short time. There is even a section for wedding lace and a garter pattern. This book is one of my favorites.

The Essence of Provence: colors, design & gardens.......2000-06-28
I bought this book for ideas on paint colors for my 1920s Spanish Colonial home. It is beautifully done, full of design details and the gorgeous colors of Provence, the south of France, that derive from the paint colors, the food, the gardens, pottery and the surrounding dry, burnished mediterranean landscape. It is the perfect inspiration for any California home or a richly hued coffee table book!
