A coming-of-age story set in the deep South, where the transformation of Mavis Black, a young woman who just graduated from college, reflects changes taking place in the land in which she grew up. Punk and Miss Pauline, Mavis' grandparents, impact her the most. As relics of the old South working to adapt to life in the 1990s, they empathize with their granddaughter's transition to adulthood through good-natured humor. And though Mavis' heart settles on a young archer named Harris, she keeps her distance, at least for a time, preferring to revel in her own emerging individuality.

Book Description

Meet Mavis Black, whose confidently intimate voice invites readers into the eccentric world of her large southern family. Coming home from college to her grandfather's prosperous Carolina vineyard, Mavis takes the measure of the emotional distance she has traveled from the people closest to her heart: her dreamy mother, her practical aunt, her bewildered boyfriend, her prodigal uncle - and most of all Punk, her grandfather, who plans to make Mavis his sole heir. Told with warmth, wit, and brio, Warlick's first novel rejoices in womanhood and the strength of loving ties. As New York Newsday said of Warlick, "Her literary talents, not to mention her prospects, are immense."

2 out of 5 stars Not much happening.......2002-01-26

Some of Ms. Warlick's writing is better suited for the short story form. I found myself wondering where this novel was going. While the language is beautiful and lush, I found myself wanting more. More plot, more character, more risks.

5 out of 5 stars A book to reread at several stages in your life as a woman.......2000-06-09

I loved Warlick's style and her description of Mavis' connectedness to the earth. It 's a book that I can imagine recommending to women of all ages, as it will have different meaning depending one one's life experiences. I don't often reread books, but I know that I will reread this as I mature through the phases of my life. I look forward to Ms. Warlick's journey!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, warm, and well written........1999-11-17

This tale is entertaining, warm, and well written. While it is not a profound book, there is no reason for harsh criticism. I think Punk is a great character and a great grandpa, and I applaud Ashley Warlick for sharing him with us. Boo to the nay-sayers - this is a fine book, worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Immature and disappointing.......1999-11-16

I am a huge fan of many of the up and coming female writers and felt very disappointed with this new candidate. Her ideas are crystal clear and picturesque, but when it comes to execution, I found myself putting the book down more than picking it up. I believe in a few years Ashley may just hit it right.

5 out of 5 stars Southern Fiction at its core.......1999-10-30

Ashley Warlick's novel is delicately written with the touch of a poet. She creates characters who are cleanly drawn, but ceaselessly complex beneath the surface. Her themes resonate Southern, and while the plot may be downplayed, what rises up is a subtle, effective probing of young Mavis' psyche. The problems this family encounters are relevant and realistic; the Blacks are dealing with true Southern themes: family dynamics and attachment to land. The setting, the southern cadences, and the interior landscape create a mosaic in the reader's mind that begs return again and again. Warlick is writing cutting edge literary fiction; she makes me think. I look forward to the second novel immensely.

      5 out of 5 stars Wild!.......2003-08-09

With all twists and turns, Holly Lisle, writes another trilogy which i found most exciting. The whole book keeps you asking questions until it builds up upon the real villian.

Faia (main charcter) is a simple shepherd girl with wild magic coursing through her veins, but when plague strikes her home town and she returns to find everything and everyone she ever loved dead...
Well lets just say its not pretty. Struck down with despair Faia finds only one other survivor of her home town and together they go off to find a better life.

But that doesn't happen for the mages and sajes of Ariss have tracked her down. Faia is forced to return with the mages to Ariss where the magic that runs through her blood can be controlled.

However Faia doesn't find it easy in her new home, espeacially when murders have been taking place and it could result in war between the two cities of Ariss: Mage Ariss and Saje Ariss.

Its all very exciting and very suspense full and definetly full of suprises. I defintely recomend this book to any fans of "The Secret Texts" trilogy and other readers who enjoy female heroines for a change!

      5 out of 5 stars Magical read!.......2002-07-20

Fire in the Mist, an early fantasy novel by Holly Lisle, is a delight! Fire in the Mist is filled with engaging characters, especially the main character: Faia Rissedote. Others, also interesting and memorable in their own way, are Medwind Song, Yaji Jennedote, and Rakell and her cat (with hands) Flynn. Even the villain of the novel has some sympathetic qualities.

Besides intriguing, realistic characters, is the excellent play of foreshadowing and plot twists.

The mage academy Daane is equally interesting, so is the unfolding history of Ariss, and the magic that exists in this world, as well as the people who wield it.

If there isn't a sequel, I wish there were.

Fire in the Mist is an excellent novel, and I encourage everyone who likes fantasy, originality, and Holly Lisle's other works, to read this one soon.

      5 out of 5 stars Poignant.......2000-10-05

The poignant start to this story, is fitting for this tragic heroine. I felt so sad for her intro where she discovers magic/power (lets just say it's not a happy experience). It felt like a tide that was drownding this character....but she always kept trying to keep her head above the water. I have re-read this book several times, and enjoy it every time. This hero isn't some perfect paladin. She has accidentely precipiated some horrible things, and no matter what good she does that will always be a part of her persona. No don't get me wrong, this book isn't some dark gritty thing, but the characters do have multiple fascits to them. Nothing is absolutly good and has been, and vice versa. I can't recommend this book enough!

4 out of 5 stars Very suspenseful and fast moving........2000-06-10

In Faia's early trials Holly Lisle nails what it's like to be alone, and not only friendless, but surrounded by enemies. Then, as Faia finally gains the smallest bit of acceptance . . .

This book really flies. The farther in we go, the faster the story moves, right up to the end. In fact, it went so fast, I was sitting here screaming, "You can't end it already! What about ____! You didn't tell me about _____!"

The book answers all the questions it raises in relation to the plot, but it left many unanswered questions about side issues and more about the world of Arhel. Questions I would love to see answered in other books. Like the back story that explains where "Arhel" came from. I know it's "Our Hell" (really, I'm not making it up!) but wondering why is driving me buggy.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great First.......2000-06-09

This was the first of Holly Lisle's books and the first I have ever read. What a first effort! A wonderful setting in a city divided on sex lines between the Mages (women) and Sages (men). Both have their legends about the cause of the rift. Both are right, and wrong. Faia Rissedotte is a young woman with great powers of magic and an attitude of defiance who finds herself among the Mages. And ancient evil is awakening, and only Faia has the ability to see past the hatred of the two groups of magicians and dicern the truth. A page turner and recommended for anyone with a love of high fantasy.

This book is a real pleasure to read. It was high time that I read a historical fiction story about ancient Ireland( I am half-Irish) and the first one I find is a real gem. Love, loss, revenge, duty.. it dosen't get any better than this.

Dolan has skillfully retold the famous tale from celtic mythology of Lugh-the long hand and how he has came to royal heritage and help defend his adopted homeland from brutal invaders. This novel has scenes of touching romance, brutal battles. This is one of the best celtic fantasies with it's blend of memorable characters and the author's own talent for storytelling.I look forward to her next book.

After intentionally getting himself expelled from Realm One, Linus Hoppe believed he would experience more of real life. But life in inferior Realm Two is a nightmare. For months Linus has been imprisoned in a factory, where he toils on an assembly line. At night, he’s so tired that he no longer dreams of a future, of the destiny he wanted to create for himself. As for his family and friends, he fears he’ll never see them again. He especially misses Chem and Yosh, his co-conspirators in fooling the Great Processor. What made them think they could change society’s rigid hierarchy? Ready to give up, Linus must somehow regain hope and the will to fight for his freedom.

                      5 out of 5 stars A good sci-fi adventure book .......2006-05-07

Linus Hoppe is a student currently living in Realm One. After he takes the exam by the Great Processor that decides which realm he will be in, he swaps scores with his friend, Yosh. He thought it would be fun living in Realm Two, but he is treated terribly and cannot see his friends anymore. When a girl named Toscane comes to talk to him, he is forced into hiding. With the help of a few of his friends, he must try to stop the Great Processor and all the exams to creat one big realm.

I thought that The Second Life of Linus Hoppe was put together very well. The characters all had there own importance and skill in the book when it was needed most. Sometimes it was hard to understand the book. That was mainly at the beginning of the book when they were introducing all the realms and characters though. What I thought was one of the best aspects of the book was that at first it told three storys that didn't mean anything but toward the end everything tied in well. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a good sci-fi book or even an adventure book to read.

Warmly effusive and dear yet gritty, Paula H. Deen seems mythically Southern. But this cooking luminary, proprietor of Savannah, Georgia's Lady & Sons restaurant, is the real thing. The Lady & Sons Just Desserts, her all-sweets follow-up to The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook and The Lady & Sons, Too!, celebrates the Southern sweet tooth with 120 recipes, including traditional formulas for the likes of Brown Sugar Pound Cake and Lemon Chess Pie as well as best-loved restaurant innovations like Turtle Cake, Lemon Curd Pudding, and Gooey Butter Cake. ("These are very, very rich," Deen advises, "and a little goes a long way--even for piggies like me!") Lovers of the restaurant--which grew to prominence from $200 and lots of determination--as well as those seeking easy-to-fix temptations should put this book to happy use.

Among its wide-ranging recipes, Desserts offers Carolyn's Jell-O Cheesecake, Lauren's Chocolate Drizzle Pie, and Hidden Mint Cookies--recipes based on cake mixes and other convenience foods. These creditable sweets are of course work saving, but are perhaps better viewed as solidly characteristic of their time and place. Equally particular are candies like Mamma's Divinity and Uncle Bubba's Benne Candy, and "other sweet things," as Deen dubs them, such as Banana Split Brownie Pizza, Easy Homemade Oreo Ice Cream, and Fresh Apples with Butterscotch Dip. With asides by Deen family members, including son Jamie's "Food Is Love" ("I am right this minute 20 pounds over-loved," he writes), useful tips (Deen provides an "emergency" recipe for sweetened condensed milk), and plenty of piquant anecdote (after Deen had rattled on endlessly to her grandmother about her intention to open a restaurant, the older woman paused and replied, "Paula, have you lost you damned mind?"), the spiral-bound book is not only full of delectable eating, it's lots of fun. --Arthur Boehm

This is just one more of Paula's great books. Sharing lots of her self along with her really yummy desserts. A definite YES. Get it.

3 out of 5 stars Not tempting enough.......2007-09-04

I received this book as a gift for Xmas and was quite excited to read through it as I enjoy PD's cooking show. However, I was really disappointed with the recipes and have only made one of the recipes in a years time.

The biggest disappointment to me is the use of processed cake mixes and pie crusts. I can't cook to save my life but I can bake really well and there's a reason I do it ALL from scratch. :) Because many of the cakes call for premade mixes, I'll never bother to make them.

I think the rest of my distaste is simply that the recipes don't really appeal to my personal tastes (much to my surprise). I'm not a big fan of coconut, chocolate or bananas. :)

Everyone deserves a trip to Savannah, at least once in their lives. A visit to Paula Dean's restaurant is an experience. This cook book can bring a little savannah home with you. You have to REALLY like sweet desserts to enjoy this. All you people with carbo problems, don't tempt yourself with these recipes.

                        Book Description

If you have ever wanted to duplicate the food from your favorite New Mexico restaurant in your kitchen, this book is for you. Probably the most unusual southwestern cookbook ever compiled, it features an assortment of recipes as eclectic as the state's cultures, many of them contributed by well-known New Mexico chefs. The recipe for refried beans comes from Philomena's restaurant in Los Alamos: it is followed by instructions for preparing the world-famous chile served at the Owl Bar & Café in San Antonio. Also represented are dishes like poulet marengo from more glamorous Santa Fe restaurants such as La Tertulia and the Pink Adobe, along with such obscure regional specialties as Hobbs barbecued ribs, Silver City sausage, and Carlsbad casserole.

The book concludes with a selection of recipes donated by some of the state's best known citizens. Now you can make lentil soup the way Frank Waters does, atole á la Rudolfo Anaya, and chile rellenos in tempura batter according to the instructions provided by Roy Nakayama, New Mexico State University's world-famous chile expert. For your friends who are not lucky enough to live in New Mexico, a list of mail-order sources for New Mexico cooking supplies is included.

The Best from New Mexico Kitchens features recipes for every course, a number of which have appeared in past issues of New Mexico Magazine, with others never before appearing in print.

This book is more "fluff" than "The Best of New Mexico Kitchens" -- more trendy restaurant recipes, PLUS the infamous "How to Boil Water" recipe. If you want traditional New Mexico -- not restaurant versions -- buy "The Best of New Mexico Kitchens" instead of this version.

America in the nineteenth century Victorian age was changing as fast as the engines of the Industrial Revolution could carry it. At every turn, Flow Blue was there, first sparking the interest of the affluent and later the middle class with its rich colors and complete table services. This book puts Flow Blue in its historical context and covers the British, American and European manufacturers who produced it, the exhibitions that promoted it, the people who owned it and what moved them to buy it. Over 500 color photographs present the variety of forms and patterns in these popular wares from the 1840s to turn of the twentieth century.

Although it is impossible to get every pattern (some are still unknown) and current prices, this book will give the reader a very good understanding in the vast field of Flow Blue collecting.

This was a very strange book to read. Here is an writer, an eyewitness to some of the most interesting and dangerous moments in recent history. Yet he seems to have had little time to reflect on what he has experienced, so pressured has he been to get the film in and on air, to say someting quick and marketable. There is no doubt about this man's courage, his credentials as a journalist, or NBC's incompetent attempts to destroy him.(It makes one never to want to watch anything on NBC or buy anything from its owner GE) But for a man who has been through so much I fear that much of what he has to say has not been digested. He appears still very much wounded by his own sucessful lawsuit and the betrayal of an organization that he risked his life for. Yet as much as I want to admire the man, there is something dishonest about this book. I do not dispute the facts, but the book presentation sounds more like a public relations effort to recusitate his career- or a recapitulation of the notes he gathered for the trial. In every chapter there is the constant effort to prove to the reader how brave he and his friends are, how stupid and deceitful are his enemies. Everything is black and white, almost nothing new or interesting or thoughtful in between. I think in the years to come we may read something far better from Kent. Kent an interesting new kind of man-a product of the news business. I would say that anyone in the news media or even thinking about it -or anyone who draws his primary information about the world from the networks -should definitely read this book for its strengths as well as its weaknesses.(One will never watch TV news again with the same trust.) But as an insightful discussion of current events or autobiography, be forwarned.

5 out of 5 stars If you hate sensationalized news, you will love this book!.......1997-09-21

I read this book expecting Arthur Kent to be arrogant but what I found was a dedicated journalist. Kent never wavered from his ethical standards. He took the giants at NBC to task for their disregard for him and others who believe that news should be reported with honesty and integrity--not for the corporate bottom line. His story is highly readable with the people he met in Afghanistan, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, and Tiananmen Square coming to life (and death) through Kent's compelling stories. When he files a lawsuit against the corporate giants, you too will be on his side. Kent deserved every cent he got. We should all put pressure on the media to give us worldwide news coverage presented by men and women who serve to provide us with the facts--not the sensation-packed news we see today. Arthur Kent takes you on his compelling journey as a foreign news correspondent. His story is told with candor and self-effacing humor. Going from the treetops of Afghanistan to that infamous rooftop in Dhahran, you will be consumed by the bloody chaos of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Just when you think you can't be shocked anymore by scenes of war and destruction, political repression, natural disaster and apathy, the equally shocking truth of what goes on behind the scenes of broadcasting is exposed. This book makes you think, not just about what is happening in the world around us, but what or who determines how much we learn of it. Kent shows us the risks some journalists take everyday, in order to bring real news to us. We owe them more than just passively sitting in front of our T.V. sets accepting whatever the networks choose to feed us. It's nice to know that old cowboy movies aren't the only place where the guy wearing the white hat can still win the battle
