Book Description
The Eye of Cybele is equal parts historical epic, whodunnit-style thriller, highbrow erotica and philosophical discourse. Set in fifth century B.C., the novel fictionally recreates the behind-the-scenes scandals and political intrigues that occupied the Athenian home front at the height of the Peloponnesian War.
Daniel Chavarria was born in Uruguay in 1933. He has taught Latin, Greek and classical literature, and has won numerous literary awards around the world. His comic suspense novel about a bicycle hooker in Havana, Adios Muchachos (Akashic, 2001), won an Edgar Award and has been translated into 15 languages.

Quite astonishing.......2007-04-02
As a Classicist, I read a lot of fiction that takes place in Ancient Greece. Some of it's quite good, most is pretty poor - and a few precious gems are truly excellent.
The Eye of Kybele is perhaps the best 'retelling' of Classical Athens I have come across - it is a thoroughly real, busy place peopled with authentic men and women of all stripes and shades.
The writing (even in translation) is at times sublime, and always interesting; the story is a grand sweep of images and events, and Chavarria, rare in novelists, knows his historical stuff and thus the details are both fascinating and accurate.
Those expecting conventional parameters may miss the fact that there is not really a central protagonist. But why keep to the 'rules' if you can produce something this good?
When you read it, take your time, savour both the penmanship and the story, for you'll not often come across its like.
Book Description
This is the book about one of the world’s great authors, Alice Munro, which shows how her life and her stories intertwine.
For almost thirty years Robert Thacker has been researching this book, steeping himself in Alice Munro’s life and work, working with her co-operation to make it complete. The result is a feast of information for Alice Munro’s admirers everywhere.
By following “the parallel tracks” of Alice Munro’s life and Alice Munro’s texts, he gives a thorough and revealing account of both her life and work. “There is always a starting point in reality,” she once said of her stories, and this book reveals just how often her stories spring from her life.
The book is chronological, starting with her pioneer ancestors, but with special attention paid to her parents and to her early days growing up poor in Wingham. Then all of her life stages — the marriage to Jim Munro, the move to Vancouver, then to Victoria to start the bookstore, the three daughters, the divorce, the return to Huron County, and the new life with Gerry Fremlin — leading to the triumphs as, story by story, book by book, she gains fame around the world, until rumours of a Nobel Prize circulate . . .
Customer Reviews:
A Must for Munro Fans.......2006-07-10
Robert Thacker has written a respectful, enlightening biography of Alice Munro that focuses mostly upon the critical reception to her work and the personal and business circumstances that made possible her surprisingly large audience. He also spends plenty of time making the case, one way or the other, that Munro ought to be regarded as one of our great writers.
Like many biographies written while their subjects are still alive, the memoir is fairly shallow in its probing of Munro's personal life. It sticks to the facts and avoids digging around much in the darker places, except to show where the work is reflective of difficult personal circumstances.
All this is very forgivable, because this is the only Munro biography we yet have, and it is plenty readable, and it is pleasing to spend a little more time thinking about Munro and her fine stories.

Hard to Put Down.......2007-05-31
"The Kundalini Equation" is one of Steve Barnes' early solo ventures and for those who are even half as passionate about human development as the author is, this is one of the best.
The story centers on a typical computer nerd that through chance and/or brilliance recreates through a powerful combination of yogic breath work, visualization, martial arts and diet a mind/body technology that evolves him from human to super-human. After a series of gruesome murders, the question soon becomes: Is he more than human or something less? This self-directed evolution idea seems to be one of Steve Barnes passions and the idea is evident in almost every piece of work that he writes. Frankly, I never tire of this and anxiously wait for everything that Barnes writes. His interests are so similar to my own, but much more than this, Steve Barnes is one of the best writers in the business. He has a great style of writing and an obvious passion for the written word, but more importantly Barnes knows people, their motivations, their lightness and darkness (and oddly seems to like them anyway).
If you can find a copy of Kundalini Equation read it and enjoy it.
Bravo Mr. Barnes.
GREAT book!.......2002-06-14
I first read this quite a few years ago but reread it nearly every year - starting to wear it out actually. Barnes clearly did the necessary research to make the tale feel real. The story line and character development make this one of the best in the fiction world (I would love to see this turned into a screenplay).
A challenging and excellent read!.......2001-10-06
This book is not for the faint-hearted. It will make you take a look into yourself and others, and see what is deeply hidden there. Although the journey through the book is challenging, it's well-worth the effort! One of my favorites from Steven...
Fantastic story - interesting concepts.......1999-12-02
This author has done his research. I am amazed at the level of detail borrowing from martial arts, NLP and other disciplines - keeping everything real.
This story is hard to put down as well.
It's hard to believe the quality that is in this little paperback - but make amazon find you a copy and buy it.
If you are at all interested in martial arts, transhumanism, eastern philosphy, or good stories - this is for you.
An Avid Reader's Favorite Book.......1999-10-22
This is one of the best books available to read. It is great writing. As well developed as a Stephen King Novel, with the plot drive of Thomas Harris. There is little this book doesn't offer. Martial Arts appreciation a plus, but not a requirement. Stephen Barnes is a master. I have read James Patterson, Richard Matheson, Stephen King, Robert Ludlum, Thomas Harris, Umberto Eco, Richard Bach. This book is a postmodern masterpiece.

Accurate cover baloons--a little scary regarding "curses".......2007-06-19
I should have considered that the cover indicates "curses". There are plenty of mean-spirited curses, which frankly scared me; these are clearly idiomatic within Yiddish language, but were not what I expected. I should have purchased a Yiddish dictionary or thesaurus for my interest level. The book contains much more, and the curse section (i.e., a hex or spell vs. calling people nasty names when they take your parking spot) is not primary, and there are plenty of OTHER areas of the book which are FUN and INTERESTING. It's a personal choice, obviously, so a potential reader shouldn't disregard the book based on MY superstitious nature alone! I guess I just wanted to understand the terms I've heard TO SWEAR for my own venting agenda.
emes.......2007-01-12
Very funny, especially if you have a non-Yiddish speaker read it out loud.
I bought two copies as gifts. If you grew up hearing Yiddish, now you have the translations of what the Bubbe's were saying.
Book Description
Here at last is a diabetes cookbook with a difference: delicious recipes designed for people with diabetes as well as additional health complications. Award-winning cookbook author Carol Gelles, herself a Type II/Adult -Onset diabetic, has written the first cookbook to address the full range of dietary needs of people with diabetes.
The Ultimate Diabetes Cookbook features recipes tailored for diabetic diets and the additional dietary restrictions for people with complications from diabetes. For example, someone with heart disease as well as diabetes can use the book to turn a basic recipe into one that is also low-fat/low-cholesteral. People with high blood pressure and diabetes will find low-sodium versions of most recipes. For kidney patients, there are numerous low-protein variations of basic recipes. All the recipes are suitable for the simple diabetic diet. And best of all, they are delicious enough to oplease everyone in the family, making meal preparation easy for everyday breakfasts, lunches, and dinners or for special occasions. Each recipe is accompanied by a helpfull nutritional summary box, with indications of which nutrients (such as protein, cholestoral, and carbohydrates) and minerals (such as sodium, magnesium, and phosphorus) are high or low in that recipe. In addition, the American Diabetic Association exchanges for all the recipes are listed at the bottom of each recipe, and there are extensive charts giving all of the nutritional values at the back of the book.
Drawing on her background as a trained nutritionist and cookbook author, Gelles has developed more than 250 enticing recipes. There are appetizers (Cucumber Feta Dip, Curried Shrimp), soups (Creamy Portobello Mushroom Soup, Mango Gazpacho), entrees (Chicken Gumbo, Roasted Cod with Moroccan Flavors, Mediterranean Beef Stew), side dishes (Broccoli Souffle, Sauteed Zucchini with Tomatoes and Raisins), salads (Marinated Tomato Salad, Oriental Chicken Salad), and breakfast and brunch dishes (Western Omelet for Two, Blueberry Bran Muffins). Desserts are included, too, to be eaten rarely and in moderation, but fully enjoyed. There are no artificial ingredients in them, such as nonsugar sweeteners, and these occasional indulgences include the likes of Brownie Bites and Ginger Bread Pudding. Throughout the book there are menu suggesions for balanced and flavorful meals. However, Gelles also realizes that each person's health plan is unique and that her recipes and menus should be used in conjunction with (rather than in place of) a doctor's advice.
Now, with the help of The Ultimate Diabetes Cookbook, people with diabetes can enjoy a wide variety of memorable meals specifically tailored to their health needs.
Customer Reviews:
The Diabetes Cookbook by Carol Gelles.......2003-11-08
The book emphasizes healthy food choices for diabetics and
people desiring to control their sugar intake. The author
provides a saturated fat index pertaining to almost every
food imaginable. There are sample dishes which are intended
for diabetics. For instance, the author presents the
cucumber feta cheese dip, roasted asparagus tips with curried
shrimp, roasted cod with Moroccan flavors and many others.
An anti-cancer/anti-tumor food group is presented in the form
of mushrooms. For instance, cordy caps increase T-cells and
NK cells. Zhu-ling is an anti-tumor form of mushroom.
Ling-Zhi is a form of Reishi which is anti-herpes. In addition,
garlic is beneficial for its allicin content. This work would
be helpful for anyone trying to control sugar intake.
For this reason alone, the book is well-worth the price charged.
The Ultimate Diabetes Cookbook.......2003-06-21
This is a concept that doesn't make sense. Ms. Gelles gives recipes to help those with diabetes who also have heart disease and kidney disease. Everyone with diabetes should eat "heart healthy" and if you have kidney disease you need more help than Ms. Gelles can provide in a cookbook. Her writing makes me think she doesn't understand basic concepts of diabetes.
fantastic recipes.......2003-04-22
Although written for diabetics, this book has great recipes for everyone. The recipes are clearly written with alternatives for those wishing to cut down on their fat, cholesterol, etc. There's a great chart in the back of the book that gives exact nutritional contents. A wonderful cookbook!

Customer Reviews:
A little bit deeper in the world of US coins.......2007-04-03
As I told in an other review regarding the blue book of US coins, I'm very intersted in the coins and their history; the red book is an exploitation in that world.
But where's the proof?.......2004-05-22
This book is good for what it includes, but there is a glaring and shocking omission! There is no info on proof sets, only on some individual coins. With the introduction of state quarter sets, annual proof sets have become a hot commodity, yet this book completely overlooks the entire category!
A Guidebook of United States Coins by Yeoman.......2003-08-01
This work has been printed and re-printed for years. It is well
organized. There is a fair concensus of coins represented.
This book is a "must read" for coin buffs and persons
seeking to establish a fair valuation for any collection.
If you own a coin handbook, eventually it will have to be
replaced in order to keep current with the most recent
evaluations. Yeoman distinguishes between grades of coins,
alphabetic abbreviations and the quantity minted.
For instance, in the year 1909 alone, there are at least
4 different coins. i.e. Lincoln Head, VDB, S and SVDB.
Lastly, the author enunciates U.S. Coin Standards in terms
of diameter, thickness, gross weight, grains and thousandths
(fineness measurement). Purchase this book if you have a coin
collection either large or small.
Timely information.......2003-06-16
As another reviewer pointed out, I to was dissapointed by the fact that the latest commerative coins were not included. At first, I thought since these are not very valuable they were excluded. Next, I thought these are the precise coins that new beginners would be looking for when they bought this book. But in conclusion, I think the real problem is timelyness. Each edition is just plain not too timely. That's a shame since time is both knowledge and the advantage one needs to stay on top of the market. This book is not meant to be a history book of the past. I hope the editors get the picture expressed here.
Great Little Book.......2003-03-03
While more pictures are always nice, this book gives me everything I was looking for, its well put together and its certainly a great price. I recently inherited a modest coin collection and this book has answered just about every question I had. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who is just getting into the coin collecting hobby.

Hand-dyed fabric.......2006-08-02
I purchased this book when it first came out and boy, I was in for a real treat. This book is written with the inexperienced dyer in mind. I teach from this book beginning dying at my local quilt shop. I'm sorry it's no longer in print. I would recomend this book to anyone that wants to learn to hand-dye! Also, using the freezer bags makes it a snap!
Very much the best for beginners..........2006-03-27
This book is great for beginners, but as a 'non-beginner' I still refer back to it all the time. It is great, as the recipes don't call for urea, which I never seem to have around. It is easier, and safer, for children to use for dyeing as it doesn't use the harsh chemicals some formulas call for.
An all around great book that should be reprinted - I have to say, as good as it is, I certainly wouldn't pay the 'used book' prices that it is going for now. It's only 55 pages, no matter HOW good it is!
I love this book!!!.......2003-03-09
I had originally purchased this book in a kit I bought from Dharma Trading. I somehow misplaced the book, and just recently purchased another copy. I have several books on dyeing/painting on fabric and go to this one time and time again. I'm teaching a class in July on dyeing fabric and everyone is going to have to purchase a copy of this book. It is a great book to learn how to dye fabric. It is well written and easy to follow. Need to purchase if you are interested in learning the art of dyeing fabric.
The only one you need!.......2003-01-09
I have MANY books on hand-dyeing fabrics for quilters, but this is the one I take out when it's time to dye. The instructions are simple and clear. The equipment is minimal and easy to use (zip-lock bags, not jars or buckets), and the worksheets are invaluable. The other books are pretty to look at and get ideas from, but this book will actually get you dyeing. Thanks, Adrienne...I should send you pictures of the many quilts I've made with my own hand-dyed fabrics thanks to you.
Hand-Dyed Fabric Review.......2002-09-21
This book was descriptive enough as far as actually dyeing the fabrics, but I felt that it lacked a basic tool - which is a color wheel. Just by adding a section pertaining to mixing and creating new colors, it might have made for better reading.

Book Description
This is the story of the rise of Lhasa, before 1642 a small town, renowned for its Jokhang temple and its three large 15th century Gelukpa monasteries. The political victory of the Gelukpa changed its destiny and it was the Fifth Dalai Lama who made Lhasa into the centre of the Tibetan world, with an influence reaching into Mongolia and Ladakh. It became a true capital, with prestigious monuments, and the Potala Palace as its focus and symbol.
Based on Tibetan and Western sources, the book provides a fascinating study of the history of Lhasa against the background of the triangular relations Tibetans-Mongols-Manchus. With ample attention for 17th century Lhasa's historical, political and cultural context, it offers new insights on Lhasa, also, in the last chapter, in its contemporary Chinese framework.

Customer Reviews:
This is so hammy it spoiled my appetite.......2005-03-05
I've never seen Charles Kuralt on television. This book is my only experience with him, and that may explain the review that is to follow.
This is the most insipid, cheese-ridden pile of bushwah I've even had the displeasure of picking up. Perhaps Kuralt has an indefinable quality that somehow brings some authenticity to the words that are printed on these pages, but the material itself is just terrible.
I was reminded of a Simpson's episode in which Bart Simpson wins admiration from everyone by peddling schmaltzy "human interest" stories on a children's news program they've started. Now, the fact that I watch Simpson's and am criticizing Kuralt may be indicative of a generation gap that is the root of the problem, but I don't see how anyone of any age could give credence to the heavy-handed moralism that Kuralt trots out, not just occasionally, but in virtually every single segment.
A truly do appreciate the value of nuanced, small town life and the individuals who dare to go against the grain in some way. But is it necessary to spotlight someone who has given their nine children rhyming names (Terry, Sherry, Jerry, etc.)?
There's something about Kuralt's line that seems insincere. Clearly, at times, he's stretching to find greater meaning in something that is maybe a little interesting, but ultimately meaningless. This leads me to think that all of it is insincere, that Kuralt is going to find the cuteness and greater meaning in everything, truth be damned. Even aside from the heavy-handed schmaltziness, it seems like a lot of the people portrayed in this feature are being capitalized on. Some of the people will certainly be ridiculed by most of the viewers; at any rate, they have had their quirky individuality processed and used for the very corporate interests that they flout.
If you are a fan of Charles Kuralt, I think that the tv segments that you fell in love with should probably be where your love affair ends. Kuralt may be a winning personality and a good salesman; if that's true, I recommend that you stick with the news broadcasts, where you can enjoy him as he grew famous: a little bit at a time.
Like a ride with an old friend.......2001-11-05
Charles Kuralt had the gift of seeing a story in the littlest thing. He took the thread of everyman's life and wove a tapestry of America and then gave it as a gift to us.
I loved re-discovering America with Charles Kuralt!.......1999-07-11
After reading this book, I felt a sense of renewal and satisfaction that there are still candles lending their beams to the world. I picked up this book for a report at school. I thought that it would be just another boring book that we are often forced to read in school. Wrong-O! I loved it! From the team that had lost every single one of its games to the train depot that served soldiers during WWII, I found myself emersed in each of the stories. Each of these average Americans had a not so average story to tell...
Great stories of everyday people who inspire and amuse.......1998-09-26
This is a wonderful book that recaptures the many stories from his on the road segments for TV. He finds the most interesting people and places; his stories tell of the inner passions of ordinary people. Another great book with similar stories--and great pictures--is Positively Connecticut by Diane Smith. She says she was inspired by Kuralt's work.
