Funny, tragic insight of life.......2004-06-05
I was looking for something else to read other than my political books that seem to be devouring me lately and I happened to run across this book. I had read it a few years ago and thought, I'd read it again.
This is a book that you can read again in different periods of your life. The first time I read it, I found it funny. This time, I found it tragic as well as funny. It also has a wistful tone to it as well. Life speeds by before you even realize it.
The Ivys come to town in preparation for Mrs. Ivy Sr.'s wife, whose sister, Marge, is on her deathbed. Pearl had left her hometown ~~ more like escape her hometown to become a beautican only to marry an undertaker, or a "funeral director" as the Ivys like to call it. Then there is Sicily Lawler, the youngest sister who married the high school principal and her daughter, Amy Jo, who is enthralled with her first love, a Gifford. And this is their stories. It is just a story of a typical family in the late 50s. They are just as human as we are, with lost loves, disappointment and fears. They also trimpuh over ordeals, imagined or real.
This is a fun novel to read ~~ it takes you away into places forgotten or just barely remembered. It makes you long for your family again and the flush of youth. It makes you stop and count your lucky stars for where you are in life right now.

A Fellow Northern-Mainer.......2002-06-17
Throughout the years, I have not read such an honest piece of literary work. Born and raised in Fort Kent, Maine, I have had the opportunity to view the world that Cathie Pelletier writes about. This book sheds light on the trials and tribulations of what small town life is like, and how people can sometimes distance themselves from more highly populated areas. The author's use of words allows the reader to get a clear picture of the setting that she is depicting, and is an excellent read for anyone wanting to experience what life is like in a different kind of society. Cathie Pelletier is successful in transforming you, and offers a creative edge to it. This book is definitely worth your time.

How in the world have I missed reading this author's work? Many thanks to the Amazon reviewers for introducing me to Cathie Pelletier. This novel is excellent, the woman knows how to write a story. The trials and tribulations of the McKinnon family makes for some poignant and hilarious reading. As one of the reviewers on the book jacket states it really is like a "Northern Southern" novel, only it's far better than most of the "Southern" genre I have read. The quality of the writing is top-notch, I will absolutly be reading other work by this author. Five stars without hesitation!
Emotional..........2002-05-05
This book will play with all possible emotions. It
is very funny and sad at the same time. The caracters
are everyday people trying to cope with the ups and
downs of life. The author Cathy Pelletier is new to me
but I will surely read every book she puts out. Get this
book and enjoy. A refreshing read.

Superman is vacationing on New Genesis. Darkseid captures a spacecraft that passes too close to Apokalips. While Superman enjoys not having to rescue anyone, Darkseid discovers the aliens and hatches a plan against New Genesis.
Soon New Genesis is under attack from Parademons. As Superman and the New Gods fight them off, they are astounded when the attackers suddenly stop and aliens burst out of their chests. Superman goes into a rage while the New Gods try to stop the flood of aliens. Then Superman and Orion take the fight to Darkseid and the Alien queen.
I have never been a fan of the Darkseid or New Gods stories (they should have been wiped out in the Crisis) and this one is not much better. Since this is not an Elseworlds tale, there is not a lot of room for maneuvering in the plot. Needless to say it is a minor skirmish in the great war between the two worlds (as they all are). I was surprised at Superman's vacation attitude. It is not explained why he is there but he seems completely unconcerned about anything that mike be happening in his absence. There was also the gratuitous "Big Barda strolling in her Bikini" scene that was followed by Orion posing in his briefs.
I felt the Aliens were not handled well either. There is no menace, only one scene of stalking, and the resolution was unresolved. Barda got away from the aliens on New Genesis but were they stopped? No one bothered to check. Darkseid seemed very careless about breeding face-huggers and chest-bursters. There are scenes on Apokalips that shown many aliens have burst forth but the story does not account for any of them. All in all this was a disappointment.
Decent, but doesn't live up to the first crossover.......2004-01-18
Most crossover sequels never do live up to their predecessors, but as far as most DC/Dark Horse Crossovers have been as of late (completely abysmal), Superman/Aliens 2 is rather good.
Superman visits old friends on New Genesis, but a shadow of a threat looms in the form of Apokolips. Darkseid has somehow managed to get a hold of Aliens, and he sees the creatures as a means of permanently wiping out New Genesis. Testing the creatures on his own people first, Darkseid is satisfied with the results and launches a massive attack on New Genesis that fails miserably...or does it? Soon, the thousands of beaten Apokolips soldiers have Aliens rip from their chests, to Superman's familiar horror. Chaos ensues and the fate of New Genesis is in the hands of Superman and the New Gods.
This is a pretty good crossover...there are no ridiculous mutations or hybrids like in recent books. Unfortunately, the Aliens are made a mockery of by the New Gods...the Aliens do not really get the respect they deserve, as they are easily fended off and beaten in most encounters. The overall story itself serves as more development in the Apokolips vs. New Genesis storyline, but overall the Aliens factor in almost as a minor inconvenience rather than a horrifying threat.
It can't be expected of a sequel to live up to the predecessor in most crossovers, but Superman/Aliens 2 isn't a bad attempt. The first crossover is one of the best DC/DH ever pulled off, and it would be hard to top it. I enjoyed this comic and recommend it to any Superman/Alien fan, just don't expect the Aliens to do much.

Last of the Aliens Series.......2003-11-04
And no wonder. This book is probably to blame for the lack of anymore Aliens novels to be written. Out of all of the Aliens vs. Predator & Aliens novels this one was the worst.
Music of the Spears has the concept of a composer on the brink of insanity that needs the screams of a live alien to complete his latest masterpiece, however,It by far goes into too much detail in areas that have no impact on the story. The characters are bland and uninteresting with too many paragraphs, if not chapters, being devoted to bringing us into the minds of these characters.
Stay away from this stinker unless you have a case of insomnia as I've found myself falling asleep while reading it.
Mozart and the Hive.......2002-03-16
This novel, because of its unique perspective and oddly toned outlook on the Alien influence on human behavior, is a must read for anyone who finds the alien appealing. Here, we are introduced to a type of obsessive that differs from any of the previous people encountered (in the reasoning behind his actions, that is), while still touching on that all-too-understood corporate manipulation approach. (Personally, I like this left in the storylines because it stays true to the original movie and makes an interesting social observation) Here, we find ourselves immersed in the "modern" music industry, where bands are produced, cloned, and so on, with our main character wanting something different. He wants to make music Alien style. So, with the help of Mozart and a bit of Xeno-Zip, he voyages into realms that are ultra yummy in a dark, foreboding sense.
This book, because of the author's style and the approach that the book takes, truly stands on its own. Everyone should check it out.
Dark, brooding, and all-out great!.......1998-12-07
I can't believe that no one's reviewed this yet. This was my third favorite ALIENS novel (first being "Female War" and second being "Labyrinth"). I think this book stands out in the series for several reasons, the biggest being that there is absolutely no action whatsoever, but the most important being that I'd actually consider this a "real" novel. Don't get me wrong - there are some other great books in this series (I've already mentioned two), but for the most part they usually consist of no more than graphic violence, killing, and sex. This book was different in that it had done of that stuff and actually had a plot! Imagine that!
I think most ALIENS fans will understand me when I say that the books and comics in this series follow a pretty predictable storyline: all alone in space, no one can hear you scream, etc. This had a beautifully crafted plot; was dark and stirred deep emotions; and, I felt, captured the atmosphere of the movie that started it all, ALIEN. I also love the way the future is portrayed; just what things would be like after an entire world massacre by a hostile species if you ask me.
Another plus is the way she handles the music. It's kind of hard to write a book about music because (obviously) you can't actually 'hear' the music she's describing, but she did such a great job that there were times when I almost thought I did hear it...
All in all, I'd consider this the most mature of the series, which is probably why a lot of peolpe won't like it. They'll think it's too slow and won't bother finishing it and will end up missing out on a great book. I can only hope that Yvonne Navarro is up for a second novel is this series which could very much use a facelift!

Great book, great vision, easy read.......2006-02-04
The author's thesis is "In times of stability large organizations can prosper. They may even be effective. In times of uncertainty small, flexible organizations prosper." The author believes we are entering a time of instability that will require small, intense, accountable and sustainable units of organization if the larger organization hopes to survive.
I wish the author had spoken a little more about the postmodern church and the emergent church. The cornerstone of Postmodern thought is uncertainty. How can religious organizations thrive during this time of cultural transition?
The book says there is a way. Transition has begun in the corner of Kansas, and seems to be spreading to affect other parts of the country. This book is an outline of the transformation process and a first glimpse at some of the results.
Not everyone in organizational live will welcome the changes. The section on resistance was helpful. But for most people the fresh breeze of change holds promise. I think this book will give you a head start in seeing a direction of promise for your organization.

Now here are two motivating, down-home ladies strengthened by family ties, enough to make a success of their dream. It wasn't always smooth "selling" for these two. But they persevered with the help of their loved ones. And they generously included them in the success. To think it all began with a textured baking sheet for Cub Scouts. Bette owes a lot to her husband Brooks!
Diane and Bette are here to tell their story - the ups, the downs, the important lessons and the crazy ones. "The Doughmakers Cookbook" chronicles a family bakeware business and what better way to present it than with 125 mouth-watering recipes? The recipes are easy and the pictures included will tempt your taste buds. The recipes are a baker's delight. The ladies cover bread, cookies, rolls, cakes, muffins, pastry, pies and pizza. It's a cookbook fascinating enough to share with your extended family.
Story of Two Sisters, their Business, and some Recipes.......2004-03-28
This book of baking recipes may not match your expectations, as it's true contents surprised me a bit, having bought it on line, primarily on the strength of its title. It's authors, Bette Laplante and Diane Cuvelier, are not professional bakers and they are not specialists in making dough. As serendipity would have it, the book is still a valuable and enlightening read, just not for the expected reasons.
The authors are sisters who, with the help of Laplante's husband, the owner of a small Terra Haute, Indiana metal supply company, start from scratch a company whose business is fabricating and selling solid aluminum bakeware. The name of the company is, of course, `Doughmakers'. Hence, the recipes in the book comprise a greatly extended brochure that the gals may have given away with their bakeware. The source of some recipes is given as family members, friends, and `Doughheads', groupie fans of their bakeware. But, the heart of the book is not in the recipes, it is in the 74 pages of introductory chapters which tell the story of how these two gals started the company, what they had to do to make it succeed, and the joy their family has experienced with their success, in spite of some close calls with poor health in one of the two founding partners.
This book should really be read by anyone who has the least inkling that they would like to start up a company involving manufacturing and sales. The first hand experiences of what the sisters, their family members / colleagues, and sons and daughters went through to reach a reasonable level of success is a real eye opener. This is really hard work. This would have been a tragedy of the first order if they did not succeed, but they did.
As most businesses like this, the sisters Cuvelier begin in the garage and spare bedroom of Bette's house, with simple equipment and aluminum a blank from Bette's husband's metals business. There is no surprise there. The big surprise is that the company did all their marketing through booths at craft shows, county and state fairs, and professional shows. The first `secret' should become obvious to anyone who has wandered around the aisles of craft shows where over half of the booth's clerks create a little nest at the back of the booth and either work on their crafts, eat, or watch a portable TV. These girls had a rule that no one ever sits in their booths. They very quickly acquired the ability to run off a short paragraph of material to an interested passerby in a single breath, within a few seconds, in order to catch their attention. And this was, as they say in military parlance, the tip of the spear. Behind this customer contact is hours of manufacturing, traveling, booth setup, and booth restocking. The most striking aspect of this story is that this craft / fair method of marketing can be so successful and, relatively speaking, so much easier than making a start by getting your product into local chain stores, let alone Sears and Walmart.
Not having ever seen their product, I have to believe that their bakeware is of a higher than average quality. I can easily see how they are superior to untreated steel, but I have a little difficulty with the value of their dimpled surface that they claim prevents sticking. But, the book is about the authors and their recipes and not really about their product.
According to the dust jacket, there are only 125 recipes in the book. This may be a bit thin for a 270-page book; however, the first quarter of the book is taken up by the story of the sisters' company. The remaining 190 some pages are filled by eight (8) chapters of recipes, being:
Bar Cookies such as brownies, fudge, and pecan tassies
Breads and Rolls such as white bread, foccacia, and strawberry shortcake
Breakfast Breads such as fruit flavored breads, scones, and cinnamon rolls
Cakes such as devils food cake, pound cake, zucchini cake, carrot pineapple cake and gingerbread cake
Cookies such as oatmeal raisin cookies, Biscotti, cheese straws, and peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip
Muffins such as blueberry, sweet potato, cornbread, apple butter, and porter peach
Pastry and Pies with `perfect piecrust', pumpkin pie, chocolate pecan pie, coconut cream pie, and so on
Pizza with long rise pizza dough, quick rise pizza dough, flatbreads, and pizzettes
Most of the recipes are pretty conventional. The Southern Buttermilk Biscuits recipe, for example, uses all vegetable shortening rather than all butter or shortening and butter mixed. I've tried both alternatives, and I am sure butter will give a better result than shortening or butter and shortening. The carrot cake does not use freshly grated carrots, it uses jars of carrot baby food. I'm afraid I will stick with my fresh carrots and my Nick Malgieri recipe. The cookies also use shortening and margarine instead of butter. Again, I will stick with my butter and my belief that I prefer the dangers of butter I know about to the dangers of margarine I do not know about. Besides, butter tastes better.
This book will not replace my dozen or so books written by professional bakers and professional baking teachers, but I am really glad I didn't miss the authors' story of their company and what they had to do to get it to succeed. I will consult this book for unusual recipes such as the pecan tassies, but it will not be my first stop in a search for a recipe.
This book has a very good story and some interesting, but average recipes.

Contenporary Bronze sculptor's assessment of Berman's work........1998-12-24
Harold Berman has done an enormous favor for all who have a love of traditional-representational bronzes. He has put together the most complete collection of photographs of table-top bronzes that I have seen in print. The books focus on works completed between 1800-1930 and each bronze is well photographed, many with additional "detail-closeups." Each work is accompanied by text giving sculptor, date and dimensions(in some instances, even foundry). As a bronze sculptor, I have found the series invalueable. The works are broken down into categories such as: Equestrian, Child renderings, Soldiers, etc. If you have even the slightest interest in the bronzes that were produced during said time period, you will find this series an absolute joy. Any person who owns statuary of the time and would like more information on their pieces would probably find what they need in these books. Auction houses, museums and individual collectors should not be without this series. Another book of similar subject matter that could interest readers is "Bronzes of the American West."

When the original VICTORIA Magazine used to be sold, I was always impressed with it's contents. Therefore, ever since the magazine went out-of-print I've been searching for similar magazines or books.
Well, this book is even better than the magazine used to be (if that could even be possible) because it is packed with so many ideas regarding "decorating in a romantic fashion".
So if you loved VICTORIA Magazine, then you will love this book as much,if not more.
PS: I just heard that they will be re-issuing VICTORIA Magazine soon (in 2008) . If the rumor is true, then I'll be subscribing!
Inspiring photos, Beautiful Descriptions.......2004-02-19
I have this book to thank for my beautiful, calming bedroom. But, the photos are so beautiful that I'd have bought it even without plans to redecorate. Victoria magazine fans will love getting much more of the same. Others will be happily surprised to see literary quotes and antique accents side by side with comfy couches and livable linens.

Exactly what I was looking for! Creating a Private World is filled with beautiful pictures of cream colored fabrics and walls, lacy windows, draped bedspreads and delicately set tables.
The color ideas can leave you calm and soothed, passionate, nostaglic, or inspired. I originally planned to sit down with a cup of tea and look through each page- but no- I started bursting with thought, looking through my fabric collection and searching for new ways to decorate each room. Needless to say my tea was cold but my mind was soaring.
Obtaining this look is not something you run out on a shopping spree and purchase everything all at once. It takes time and carefully selected pieces to blend together beautifully.
Creating a Private World is a fantastic beginning. This way you can see what styles you like and what would work with the spaces you have. It' s also a very nice read and to thumb through at the end of the day.
I purchased this as a treat for myself, along with Victoria's Romantic Country Style, and Victoria's The Charms of Tea.
A little at a time I'll create my own Private, Intimate home.

This book comes from a beautiful series. Each book is wonderfully produced with gorgeous photos, high quality paper, and pretty end-papers (haven't seen any of those for a while).
Each photo is someone's way of creating their own private space - or a space that intimately reflects their personal interests. The text on that page, tells about the person, sometimes telling the evolution of that private space.
Sometimes it is just a corner, or a desktop - but a reminder that we need places that belong to us alone.
Beautiful ways to do our just Being. Remembering just Being is an art form.
