Book Description
A powerful first novel about a family that slips from fortune’s favor and a town broken by the forces of modernity
Across a bend of Ontario’s Attawan River lies the Island, a working-class neighborhood of whitewashed houses and vine-freighted fences, black willows and decaying sheds. Here, for generations, the Walkers have lived among the other mill workers.
The family’s troubles begin in the summer of 1965, when a union organizer comes to town and Alf Walker is forced to choose between loyalty to his friends at the mill and advancement up the company ranks. Alf’s worries are aggravated by his wife, Margaret, who has never reconciled her middle-class English upbringing to her blue-collar reality. As the summer passes, Joe, their son, is also forced to reckon with his family’s standing when he falls headlong for a beautiful newcomer on a bridge—a girl far beyond him, with greater experience and broader horizons. As the threat of mill closures looms, the Walkers grapple with their personal crises, just as the rest of the town fights to protect its way of life amid the risks of unionization and the harsh demands of corporate power.
Superbly crafted and deeply moving, this remarkable debut follows the Walkers to the very bottom of their night only to confirm, in the end, life’s ultimate hopefulness. The Island Walkers is at once a love letter to a place, a gripping family saga, and a testimony to the emergence of an important new novelist.

Enjoyable.......2006-08-14
It's 464 pages and I read it in less than a week so as you can guess, I really got into it. Alf Walker works at a Canadian textile mill in the mid-'60s . A company (Intertex) brought the place, called Bannermen's Mills. Alf tried to bring the union in there in 1949 with disastrous results. He has ambivalent feelings about the union trying again to come in.
Most of the book is about this but also about his family. His son Joe wants to go to college and is in love with a girl (Anne) who is into poetry. In his mind, she is better than him. Anne is with Brad so she asked Joe to ask her friend Liz out so they can double date. It gets complicated in a high school kind of way. There is also his wife Margaret, his son Jamie who is 8, and his 10 year old daughter Penny.
I think the union story grabbed my attention since I worked at a factory in Detroit when the Teamsters hustled their way in. We too had to vote yes or no to letting them in. Well, I ended up being in Teamster's local 299, Jimmy Hoffa's old union. I still have the card. Being a union member has it's good and bad points. The process of the union coming in was an interesting time, I'll say that.
Moved By A Heartfelt World.......2006-01-28
I savored this story, rich and riveting and bursting with compelling characters. John Bemrose pours so much into this story, too much, perhaps, but I did not complain while reading. It was one of those books I really regretted coming to an end.
He tracks the lives of a dozen or more characters. Too many to really do justice to them all, and it is hard to disagree with critics who fault the story on this count. But all are so worthy of exploration that I cannot say who should go. Similarly, the gorgeous writing at times slowed the flow (there is quite a lot of good tension and narrative suspense to keep one turning the pages), but I enjoyed almost all of it. If anything I wish he'd expanded the stories of at least a half-dozen characters.
The first tragedy to strike Jamie I could have done without; so many fiction writers have woven this in to their stories that it's almost hackneyed. This unique story did not need it.
The ending felt a bit rushed, in contrast to the slower build-up to smaller critical events earlier. But I simply wished the story would not end, so no conclusion could leave me feeling that all had been told, that it was 'enough'.
LIfe is tough and then gets tougher.......2005-05-06
I read The Island Walker, on the recommendation of a work associate who has appreciated the same books as me. This one didn't cut it for me, however. Beautifully written, I'll give it that, and a strong and dramatic set of themes - very "book club". Without knowing anything except that it was a "really good book", I was filled with dread early on, as it seemed to be hauntingly like "A Fine Balance" - the foreboding tone just deepened. Like life, I guess, is the reason the book was hailed as being "epic" - challenge, tragedy, sorrow upon sorrow... but the joys were so fleeting and anxiety-ridden, they couldn't really be enjoyed by the characters ( and thus this reader). In desperation, I skimmed through part of it closer to the end to see if the resolution would give me some meaningful satisfaction. Sigh.No such luck. So I read on... Life in tough times - but there are always tough times. The endurance, perhaps, is what my workmate found meaningful for her. For me , I simply endured the tragedy.
A Competent Novel.......2004-06-19
I enjoyed reading this novel. I like books set in my home province, with real characters and real situations. If you like fiction, you should like this book.
Walked with the wrong Walkers.......2004-03-18
Bemrose's The Island Walkers intrigued and impressed me at first. His ease switching from one character to the next was masterful. That's about as far as my compliments will go. After all was said and done, I didn't like this book. I thought that despite switching from one character to the next, Bemrose focused on the wrong characters, ie., Alf Walker (the father) and Joe Walker (the oldest son). I could not have cared less about Alf's union problems when Jamie (his youngest son) had had such a horrific experience. Jamie's story would have been more compelling. Initially after reading what happened to him (I won't offer any spoilers) I felt like vomiting. It was that awful. But then the subject is essentially dropped (not entirely- it did pop up in his nightmares but it was not a focal point of the book). Who could care about unions, extramarital affairs, or highschool romances after that? Likewise, Margaret (the mom) and Penny (the daughter) seemed to play minor characters and in my mind (granted maybe its just a personal taste thing) the book suffered for it. In other cases, switching to the stories of side characters was just unnecessary. Joe's history teacher, for example. You get one small glimpse into his world and the matter is dropped. I wished Bemrose had gone all out or not at all. And the supernatural thing? I didn't get it. It felt silly and really out of place whilst under the illusion of having some higher meaning.

Book Description
Following her acclaimed novel The Burning Land, Victoria Strauss delivers a powerful tale of faith and oppression, forbidden magic, love, and redemption. . . .
The Awakened City
After centuries of oppression, the Empire of Arsace has finally reclaimed the capital city of Ninyaser and the First Temple of the Gods. But the powerful Brethren will tolerate no challenge to their rule, and an expedition to destroy the secret colony of Refuge, home to ancient mysteries and forbidden sorcery, has proved the catalyst for war.
Ravar, the most powerful of the hidden Shapers, vows revenge against the Brethren. Raising an army of worshippers and kidnapping the seer Axane to help him in his quest, he travels to the holy city of Baushpar itself as the Empire prepares for battle. Meanwhile, leaving his peaceful life behind to save Axane, the Shaper Gyalo has a startling epiphany.
Against a backdrop of war, insurrection, and sacrifice, two powerful Shapers must discover who is the true Next Messenger, for their quest will lead either to salvation or destruction.
Customer Reviews:
timely cautionary tale .......2006-03-17
In Galea, the Empire of Arsace has begun to throw off the oppression of centuries and regain what was lost especially the First Temple of the Gods in Ninyaser. The Brethen, refusing to lose what they have held for centuries, attack the city of wizards Refuge beyond the Burning Lands. War is imminent on both the mundane and mystical levels.
Ravar wants to be acclaimed the Next Messenger to the sleeping powerful deity Arata though he knows he is a false messenger. His plan is to cleverly use the assault on Refuge, the upcoming war and most critical the seer Axane to further his ambitions. He travels to Baushpar and abducts Axane. However, Ravar fails to take into account one important factor, Axane's loving husband Gyalo who cherishes his spouse. Gyalo risks his life to rescue his beloved, but his journey proves frighteningly enlightening as he begins to believe he is the true Next Messenger, a job he does not want.
With religious intolerance geometrically on the upswing around the world including the United States, THE AWAKENED CITY is a timely cautionary tale that focuses on the impact of societies by de facto and de jure religious oppression. Readers see first hand what occurs when narrow-mindedness is the norm through the changing viewpoints of predominantly the two candidates for the Next Messenger position. The story line is action-packed but insures the key cast members are complete individuals so that the audience can understand their motives. Though better to have read the previous novel THE BURNING LAND this invigorating tale can stand alone in its fervent plea for forbearance of one another's beliefs.

Book Description
Thiadora Murphy is a "floater." Born and raised to withstand a zero-gravity environment, the floaters are considered the dregs of the universe-an outcast society of space workers who have been ostracized and nearly enslaved.
Murphy thought she could rise above her floater heritage. But then she was expelled from her military academy and forced to work as a test pilot for a powerful corporation. It's a job with many risks-and questionable rewards. Because her mission requires her to steal something from a rival company-a faster-than-light technology that could liberate floaters once and for all....
Advance praise for Murphy's Gambit:
"Mitchell is a rare author-as equally deft with special relativity and biochemistry...sculpting real characters and delivering a ripping good read."-Eric S. Nylund, author of Signal to Noise
Customer Reviews:
A fairly good read.......2005-07-21
NO, it isn't Isacc Asimov but it's still a good read, with a few interesting ideas. Well worth the money and I'd really like to see a sequel. . .
It's an abstract and not a detail........2005-04-13
For all the no brain reviews that I have read just now there should be at least one that expresses the real intent of Murphy's Gambit, which was to present an abstract of the future and not to be misled by just a few mistakes. It was an excellent prelude to the real possibilities dealing with Astro-Physics which the author is very capable of handling and did so with expertise. The space ship presented a very real example of what is possible in Einstein's universe if the people who write reviews could just imagine, but they are too concerned with a glob of paint on a canvas when they should just back away and look at an excellent work of art.
Kinda different from all the rest.......2004-09-21
This book was intriguing enough to make me buy another from the author. I have read probably 500 science fiction books and I think this one had some worthwhile ideas.
I loved the idea of floater culture and grounders described in a believeable way. I always wondered how that would work out in real life. I love the fact that she doesn't end up with the man at the end. I love the plastic reshaping prison cells. I'm not quite sure I buy the whole 13th seat in the collective, but I was hoping for some illumination in a sequel.
Don't believe all you read from other commentors. This book was not formulaic, I couldn't put it down.
Good story, wrong time........2004-06-29
Space-born workers being treated like slave. The Collective Enforcement Agency, the space cops, are nothing more than security for the Corporations who run everything. The Corporations are run by families who are always looking to gain more wealth and power.
This sounds like the setting for... millions of science fiction novels. Replace the science with magic and it is also the setting for tons of fantasy novels. For a first book the author does a good job, giving it her own touch, her own terms, ideas and tiny twists that make it her own. BUT it still feels like I've read this book before.
Same with the characters. Greedy business leaders, freedom loving zero-gravity humans who believe in free love and free space, corrupt cops, a misguided hacker, a hot-shot young pilots with a bad temper. It's easy to see how the characters will act or react when faced with a problem. When the plot is totally character-driven, this makes it easy to see where things are going, even with the most surprising plot-twists. The ending is nice, but not surprising.
This book is good for young adults OR if you sent it back into time, maybe the early 1980s?
Less Than I Expected.......2003-11-17
This book was something of a disappointment. The author had a great idea -- an entirely disenfranchised culture of people who live in space -- but the author did little with it. Granted, this was the author's first foray into writing a full-length science fiction novel, so someone's first try at something shouldn't be shot down completely. Nonetheless, the author could have done so much MORE with this concept. To start, she could have, and indeed should have, fleshed out this novel much more...being a bit more descriptive about the characters' environs as well as the characters' themselves would have gone a long way. Also, the author's consistency could use some work...in the first third of the book the main character gets her ankle hurt and while we do occassionally hear about the pain she's in...there are several times farther along in the story where she could have gotten at least some kind of cursory medical attention...but doesn't...like the author forgot about that thread of the story. But oddly enough it was a couple of small details about this book that bothered me the most. First, the main characater's home system encircles the star Formalhaut...there is NO star Formalhaut...the star's name is FOMALHAUT -- no "R". And the second little thing that bugged me was a reference toward the end of the book about "intergalactic" trade or travel (I don't remember which). The word "intergalactic" means between galaxies, there is no travel between galaxies in the book, just travel within this one...what the author should have said was "interstellar"...which means between stars, which does happen in the book. I know the above points are minor...I can forgive a weakly written story...but when someone screws up little details it really irks me. Overall, despite the fact that this is the author's first attempt at a scifi novel, this book could have been so much better (and if the author ever decides to rewrite things from a different angle later on in her career I would certainly read that story). This book is really best read in the early teen years and should be relegated to the Young Adult section of either your library or bookstore. For ages 9-14 this book is definitely recommended (but not before a book like Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game)...for anyone beyond their early to mid-teens, this book is only worth recommending if you've got nothing else to read, want to get a taste of what your kids are reading, or are a really die-hard scifi fan.

George Stella's Livin' Low Carb has little in common with diet books: In fact, it's got more in common with a cookbook you might have bought for yourself when you first moved out on your own. The style is casual and approachable, with no tense lists of diet-related details or overly-complex recipes, and cooking techniques require little more than a working stove and a frying pan.
George Stella (along with pastry chef-wife Rachel) have developed a wide range of recipes designed to compliment Atkins and other low-carb diet regimens. Rather than relying on packaged convenience foods that meet these dietary standards, they focus on home-cooked meals that satisfy the demands of low carb life without tasting like they were baked up in a factory. Flavors include Chinese (Szechuan stir-fry), Italian-American (clams casino), Southern (fried chicken), and American sweets (chocolate chip muffins and no-bake Key lime cheesecake). Snacks, salads, entrees, and desserts all see equal amounts of attention.
There's a heavy reliance on the sugar substitute Splenda, but in general this is real food for daily life. The condiment chapter contains homemade versions of ketchup, mustard sauce, barbecue sauce and even Thousand Island dressing, and makes a simple place to get started even if the only kitchen appliance you're comfortable with is a can opener. Each recipe clearly notes "special equipment" (like 8-inch square pans) as well as the yield, net carbs per serving, and separate times needed for prepping and cooking.
Because of the sugar substitute and number of recipes that alter classics in ways that compromise traditional textures in favor of lowering carbs (such as noodle-free lasagna), the book is most likely to be used by dieters, rather than all home cooks. Still, if you're looking for easy ways to tinker with your food intake that doesn't involve packaged mixes from the diet industry, Stella offers plenty of tasty options. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
George lost weight with Stella Style: "eating fresh foods, using low-carb ingredients to reinvent your old favorites, developing better eating habits, and, most of all -- eating food you love!" And he wasn't the only one: The entire Stella family shed more than 560 pounds.
In Livin' Low Carb, George has brought together more than 125 of the Stella family's favorite recipes. For breakfast there are Blueberry Pancakes or George's Gorgeous Macadamia Banana Muffins. For lunch or dinner try Low-Carb Pizza, Tequila Chicken Quesadillas, Spaghetti Squash Alfredo, Lasagna, Anaheim Shrimp Scampi, and Southern Fried Chicken. And don't forget soups, salads, and vegetables! You'll find recipes here for Key West Caesar Salad, Turkey Vegetable Soup, and Garlic Mock Mashed Potatoes. If it's sweets you crave, try Chocolate Pecan Brownies or New York Ricotta Cheesecake. There are also party recipes (Nutty Muddy Trail Mix, Teriyaki Sesame Tuna Skewers), tasty drink concoctions (Strawberry Milkshakes, Lemon-Lime Slushees), and a wide array of condiments and dressings (including Quick and Easy Ketchup and Thousand Island Dressing).
These recipes feature easy-to-find, low-carb ingredients that will fit any budget. More than just a cookbook, Livin' Low Carb is a practical guide to a sustainable low-carb lifestyle.

George Stella's Livin Low Carb: Family Recipes Stella.......2007-10-10
Wonderful book, the Tequilla Chicken is great have shared that recipe with other co-workers & they all says it is the best. Have tried many other low-carb recipes & they always are lacking something, Stella's recipes taste like the real thing.
great cookbook!.......2007-08-07
I love this book....I have other low carb cookbooks and I use and enjoy them as well, but when I make recipes out of this book I do not feel like I am using crazy things like pork rinds to bread my chicken. I never thought that I would actually enjoy eating anything made with soy flour, but I have loved every recipe I have made out of this book!
If you eat low carb, this book is for you.......2007-06-24
I have both the Stella cookbooks and use them, if not every day, at least every week. Many of his recipes have become favorites of mine and my guests. The ingredients are easy to find and easy to prepare. Food boredom can become a problem with low carb diets. There's nothing to be bored about in these cookbooks.
I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-06-21
This cookbook is chock full of fun and easy recipes! Most can be made in less than a half hour. All can be made with typical kitchen staples except for Soy Flour. Easy to find in any local health food store! Don't wait, buy this book and start feeling and looking better!
Awesome recipes, great taste!.......2007-06-11
The only downside i think is that this isnt a very low carb book. Some recipes have moderate carbs per serving.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A Life Full Of Days is a sincere and genuine memoir........2005-04-13
A Life Full Of Days ( Publisher: Authorhouse (May 1, 2003) ISBN: 141072607X) is a sincere and genuine memoir by Chalmers (Chum) Dale. Chalmers Dale is a (now retired) Emmy award-winning CBS news producer whose journalism career brought him face-to-face with distinguished citizens ranging from Martin Luther King Jr. to Bob Hope.
While reading A Life Full Of Days, I couldn't help but hear the song The Long And Winding Road by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
"The long and winding road that leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before it always leads me here
Leads me to your door..."
In his memoir Mr. Dale speaks from a life that has lived on both sides of the tracks -- A man who in his search for his true self and his honest sexual representation while living a double life as a gay man in a "straight" world. From a confused young man to WW2 military service to a ten-year marriage with two children, Chalmers endures to find his true self. Chalmers Dale does an exceptional job at sharing with us his 'personal' meaning of life and living that life as "who he is" and not what society dictates "who he should be".
A Life Full Of Days is an important book with a more important message. As the author says, "Was it time to stop kidding myself and recognize that I was a homosexual? The answer was yes." Chalmers Dale's story is one that will reach and enlighten everyone who reads it but especially this book puts his life out there for young people to see and possibly to "...ease some pain they feel during adolescence, with sexual confusion nagging at them." Mr. Dale's life and story also explores the compassion and understanding he brought to his assignments at CBS -- shows that "made a difference" for millions of viewers."
A Life Full Of Days is the verse and soul of a life and author who so perfectly sums everything up in a quote by Soren Kierkegaard that says, "LIFE CAN ONLY BE UNDERSTOOD BACKWARDS: BUT MUST BE LIVED FORWARDS." In this outstanding and well-written memoir this particular reader traveled "The long and winding road" that was and is the life of Chalmers "Chum" Dale. Thank you Mr. Dale for your story and your life. Hopefully many will read A Life Full Of Days, a book, that leads to your door.

An absorbing read.......2003-11-17
A Life Full Of Days is the personal memoir of Emmy award-winning CBS news producer Chalmers (Chum) Dale, and entails the globe-spanning journalism that brought him face-to-face with distinguished citizens ranging from Martin Luther King Jr. to Bob Hope. Recounting his life from a confused childhood to his adult determination to seek out evidence of the human condition for all to see, A Life Full Of Days is an absorbing read and a highly recommended addition to community library American Biography collections.
so simple, so honest, so important.......2003-11-07
These were the most exciting times in television history. This personal narrative--fascinating, difficult, ironic, and funny--tells of an ordinary life filled with extraordinary moments. Emmy Award-winning CBS News producer Chalmers (Chum) Dale examined and documented the human condition in over 300 shows. His work took him around the world, introducing him to many of the most distinguished citizens and celebrities of our time, from Martin Luther King Jr. to Bob Hope.
This compelling memoir, written in an approachable, conversational style, also tells of Chum's lonely struggle in leading a double life: A search for true sexual identity during adolescence, WW2 military service, a short teaching career, and a ten-year marriage with two children. His existence begins to make sense when he meets his significant other of forty-two years and starts piecing his life together. Through these enduring experiences, Chum's story also explores the compassion and understanding he brought to his assignments at CBS--shows that "made a difference" for millions of viewers.
Deeply moving..........2003-09-24
Chalmers Dale reveals all about his interesting life. Dale was truly a pioneer, and his courage, integrity, and creativity are evident on every page.
Good days... bad days.......2003-08-31
The author tells his story in an honest but tasteful way. Seems like he did some cool things over the years even if it did take him a while to figure out who he was.
There are interesting reflections on music, sports, urban and suburban life in the 20th century and especially TV. The guy was on hand as TV became basically what it is today.
This book'd make great reading for young people in a similar position: figuring out their sexuality and family while trying to make the most of thier time.
His style is unpretentious and relaxed. I felt like I was sitting around one afternoon having a chat. There are photos.
