Book Description

In 1960, renowned Nevada writer Robert Laxalt moved himself and his family to a small Basque village in the French Pyrenees. The son of Basque emigrants, Laxalt wanted to learn as much as he could about the ancient and mysterious people from which he was descended and about the country from which his parents came. Thanks to his Basque surname and a wide network of family connections, Laxalt was able to penetrate the traditional reserve of the Basques in a way that outsiders rarely can. In the process, he gained insight into the nature of the Basques and the isolated, beautiful mountain world where they have lived for uncounted centuries. Based on Laxalt's personal journals of this and a later sojourn in 1965, The Land of My Fathers is a moving record of a people and their homeland. Through Laxalt's perceptive eyes, and his wife Joyce's photographs, we observe the Basques' market days and festivals, join their dove hunts and harvests, share their humor and history, their deep sense of nationalism, their abiding pride in their culture and their homes, and discover the profound sources of the Basques' strength and their endurance as a people.

5 out of 5 stars "The language of the eyes".......2001-06-03

Nevada writer Robert Laxalt's "The Land of My Fathers" is a description of life in the French Basque Country in the 1960s. Laxalt -- the son of Basques who immigrated to Nevada about 1910 -- spent 1960-61 and 1965-66 getting to know his parents' ancient homeland. Making use of his family ties, he succeeded in breaching the "impenetrable wall of Basque reserve" (in Rodney Gallop's words) in a way only a few outsiders have been able to do.

The book is not a straightforward narrative and Laxalt writes about much more than his own experiences. A collection of vignettes, histories, and folk-sayings, it is an exploration of the Basque character. We read about everything from "Basque troubadours" to the humanization of German soldiers stationed in the Basque lands during the occupation of the Pyrenees. Trying to capture the essence of this ancient people, Laxalt gives us glimpses of the "poetic truth" of the Basque land and Basque history, the emotional truth gleaned from "the language of the eyes." Of course the approach is not without its drawbacks, but for a book like this, "The Land of My Fathers" is remarkably free of immigrant-son's-come-home romanticism.

In addition to Laxalt's vivid prose poetry, many of his vignettes are interesting as anthropological descriptions of life in the "Pays Basque". Here, we encounter aspects of Basque folklife such as pigeon-hunting, contraband, dancing, the unique brand of "shepherd justice", and the "bohèmes" (literally "Bohemians", they are a poorly-known group of shunned outsiders -- not unlike the Gypsies -- who have lived in the Basque country for years). A couple of these "ethnological vignettes", in fact, appeared in the August 1968 issue of "National Geographic".

Although throughout one is struck by the Basques' indomitable ability to overcome adversity, unfortunately the beautiful culture described by Laxalt is rapidly slipping away -- if it has not, for the most part, slipped away already. The Spanish sector of the Basque lands has long been one of the most heavily industrialized in Europe and the French sector, although still largely rural, has seen the same kinds of cultural changes places all over the world have seen with the onslaught of globalization. Many things have changed for the better, and Laxalt certainly doesn't claim the past was perfect, yet it is difficult not to agree with him that "something of the romantic past has been lost." For all that, his many books are even more important, small safeguards against a rapidly deteriorating humanity.

If there were ten stars, "The Land of My Fathers" deserves them.

Book Description

From Jonathan Raban, the award--winning author of Bad Land and Passage to Juneau, comes this quirky and insightful story of what can happen when one can and does go home again.

For the past thirty years, George Grey has been a ship bunker in the fictional west African nation of Montedor, but now he's returning home to England-to a daughter who's a famous author he barely knows, to a peculiar new friend who back in the sixties was one of England's more famous singers, and to the long and empty days of retirement during which he's easy prey to the melancholy of memories, all the more acute since the woman he loves is still back in Africa. Witty, charming and masterly crafted, Foreign Land is an exquisitely moving tale of awkward relationships and quiet redemption.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Haunting poignant tale with a fantastic end........2000-08-24

There are many books that are rivals for the award of best beginning, but this is definitely my vote for the best ever ending of a novel. Obviously I can't tell you the end, because that would spoil it, but the end of this book has kept me thinking for years since I read it. The story itself is low key, an aging man who has spent his productive years abroad and finds no solace in returning home. He decides to head off into the teeth of a rebellion rather than vegetate in the country of his birth. The novel is well written, with the nautical detail that you would expect from Raban. It is a book written at the pace of the central character, a little slow reflecting his age and the age in which he grew up. Believe me, though, this is one you want to finish, The ending is just brilliant.

            5 out of 5 stars Great intro.......2004-03-29

Great read, but it jumps around a little too much. There was a lot to be said but not enough pages.

5 out of 5 stars The New Reign.......2004-02-03

This is without a doubt one of the best L.O.T.F.R. books written by Edward Blume. A new writer to the series, he does the already fantastic series justice. Taking place a little after "The Lion" this is the prelude to the for winds saga. I look forword to reading the next books in the series. I would recommend this book to any one interested in Asian folklore books.

5 out of 5 stars A new Regin in Rokugan.......2004-01-30

The Steel throne is a very excellent book. Takeing place a little after the lion, Mr. Blume does an excellent job re-creating the mysticical land of Rokugan. At the back of the book it tells about each of the main characters so even if you forgot what happened or never read the origanal books you can get a good idea of what happened. I would recommend this book to any one that likes a book with acton, adventure, and a good plot that takes place in futile Japan/Asia

5 out of 5 stars A most satisfying entry in the L5R series.......2002-08-26

Having read them all, I'd rate The Steel Throne in the Top 3, along with The Crane, and The Dragon, in no particular order.

While the previous 7 books in the series deal with the doings of one main character within a short timespan (a few months, at most), this one spans the decades long conflict known The War Against Spirits and there is no main character. Instead, each chapter centers on one character, then jumps forward one month, or several years, to the next. This, far from being confusing, makes for an entertaining and dynamic read.

When dealing with game-based fiction, or shared-world fiction in general, one must thread carefully the narrow line between fulfilling reader expectations and crafting a compelling read, with a few surprises to boot. In my opinion, Mr. Bolme has succeded. Most bases are covered, questions long raised are finally answered, and a plot and characters only hinted at in one-liners on a piece of cardboard are made alive in this most satysfing novel.

5 out of 5 stars A great book, despite some continuity quibbles........2002-07-04

As has been mentioned on some listservs, this book has certain continuity errors; this is to be expected, as the book is produced by Wizards of the Coast, while Alderac Entertainment Group now handles the story. But, contrary to the dire criticisms I'd seen, the divergences did not hurt the book much. There were definitely some scenes I would have liked to see that were not included, but then again, this was only one novel :) It is not a great work of literature like Faulkner, Dickens, or Proust, but it is engaging and interesting, especially for a "gaming book". I also greatly enjoyed the human-human conflicts (okay, human-back from the dead human) as opposed to the clans versus the overwhelming evil story of the Clan War storyline. Overall, I have to give this book a very high recommendation!

            Book Description

It's a struggle to survive on post-apocalyptic earth.

In this first book in the trilogy of The Longlight Legacy, the wars have transformed the world, and 16-year-old Roan is about to discover a terrible truth.

When Roan's parents and the people of Longlight perish in a raid, Roan is filled with rage. Torn between his desire for revenge and the legacy of peace he has inherited, he is taken in by a sect of warriors. With them he learns he has exceptional talent as a fighter. But Roan is haunted by visions he can't understand. When he commits his first act of violence, he flees in disgust into the most wasted lands of all, the Devastation.

He meets friends and allies in unexpected places, as his enemies hunt him down. But it is only when Roan meets Alandra that he begins to understand his life's purpose and why his village, Longlight, was destroyed.

Dennis Foon has created an immensely powerful and disturbing look at a wasted world. Through the character of Roan, hope and the promise of renewed life seem possible.

This is a stunning, evocative, page-turning novel in a popular teen genre: sci-fi/fantasy.

            4 out of 5 stars Dirt Eaters.......2006-04-16

            The Dirt Eaters

"The Dirt Eaters" by Dennis Foon, takes place in post-apocalyptic earth, where most modern day things such as metal or solar panels are rare and hard to come by. There is only one place, "the City" where electricity is still abundant and it would appear that metal is worked to make things such as motorcycles, this "City", is apparently trying to dominate the world. The story follows a boy of about fifteen, named Roan; he was raised in the town of Longlight, which was destroyed, and Roan was the only survivor. The "Brothers" a religious cult doing who are sworn to protect others and better the world, took him in. While with the Brothers, Roan is trained to fight and concentrate to calm himself, but all the while Roan has the feeling something isn't quite right.
As the protagonist, Roan grew up in Longlight, a place where people never fought; they believed that fighting corrupted people. When Roan is trained to fight by the Brothers it goes against what his people taught him, however he is very good at it and he tells himself that if his people did fight then they would not have been killed.
The main theme behind "The Dirt Eaters" is about having power, but knowing when to use it. Roan struggles with this throughout the whole book, he can fight, very well, but he was brought up not to fight; however at times it is necessary to fight.
I would recommend this book for nearly all readers; the storyline is good, and it's not too predictable. It's not a really high level of writing, but it is well written, and contrary to most stories it's written in present tense; but once you adjust it's not really noticeable. The characters are all interesting, especially Roan with his inner conflict around violence.

            5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2005-08-05

I really enjoyed this book. Many books and movies have been created about After the [pick one: War/Bomb/Holocaust] that destroys civilzation as we know it. So many, in fact, that new ones of that genre can be boring or at least cliché. Not this one though! It is well written and has interesting ideas and characters, and pulls in thoughts from many cultural traditions. It asks questions about pacifism vs fighting back, and when to take action and when to wait. It also manages not to be cynical. I couldn't put it down! This is a book I'm glad I own because I will definitely re-read it.

2 out of 5 stars None too descriptive........2005-02-25

This book has a few intresting concepts, but it quite frankly lacks decent descriptive talent. Also, the story never really found foundation. The back of the book had more substance than ninety percent of the pages.
I could be wrong. Just my opinion.

            5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2004-12-16

              Book Description

With vivid characters and striking details, the poems in Dirt Eaters recount the author's examination of her Cracker and southern ancestry in a way that extends beyond the familial to include a region and class sometimes maligned, sometimes romanticized, and often misunderstood. In these haunted, lyric narratives, culture, religion, and class collide. The resulting poems serve tribute to a place and its people through examination of sin and redemption, darkness and light, haves and have-nots, and shame and pride.

The book was born of the consequences of leaving a place and family steeped in the history and traditions of the South. The poet, having moved to the Midwest, has become a sort of expatriate in her father's eyes, and she herself has underestimated the hold that home would have over her. These poems are a mystical journey back through her ancestry. The dead serve as conjurers and characters both real and mythologized throughout the collection--Uncle Seward, who uses dice and the Bible as a means of prophecy; blind Aunt Ater, who finds solace and doom in biblical numbers; an unlucky man facing certain death as he stands on an alligator's back; and women who gorge themselves on dirt--all find their way back to life in these poems. Dirt Eaters seeks grace in the unlikeliest of people and places. Bound up with the peculiar, however, is the poet's own desire to reconcile the handed-down shame and faulty pride within herself as well as the religion of the ecstatic within her own quiet questioning.

              Book Description

Julia Child introduced us to French cooking. Lidia Bastianich introduced us to Italian cooking. Now Daisy Martinez will introduce all of America to Latin cookingher way. In a country where salsa now outsells ketchup, Daisy Martinez is out on a mission to change the way we cook. In her new cookbook, a tie-in to her public television show, Daisy introduces us to the mouthwatering meals of her Latin ancestryand not just to the pork, beans, rice, and burritos many people associate with Latino culture. Here are Stuffed Yucca Fritters, Peruvian Minestrone, and Braised Chicken with Figs, to name just a few. By combining the delicious flavor of Latino cultures with ingredients available in any kitchen, Daisy shows us how to daisy-fy regular meals and turn them into something extraordinary. Divided into twelve chapters such as Turnovers and Tamales, Appetizers and Little Bites, Soups and One-Bowl Meals, and Chicken, Duck, and Turkey, and filled with more than 200 recipes and color photographs throughout, this is a cookbook that will introduce a new culinary star. Special features in the book include: lDaisys Top Ten: palate-rocking staple dishes and condiments that will expand your repertoire. lDaisys Corner: a series of essays about the intersection of food, family, and culture.

5 out of 5 stars Daisy Will Rock Your World.......2007-10-05

Having enjoyed her PBS show for sometime I finally broke through the wall of shopping procrastination and bought the book. It is simply a treasure trove of easy and flavorful recipes that will have you enjoying cooking again.

One of the true joys was when I made her braised pork with chillies. Little did I know that my great-grandmother used to cook a similar dish for my Spanish (Gibraltarian) great-grandfather. My mom exclaimed as she tasted it,"Oh My! I haven't had this in years!" Then followed one of those family moments that can only happen when a long lost food memory suddenly appears on your table.

I can also heartily recommend her seafood in escabeche sauce. Although I did pull a variation on it. Instead of pickling in it we found that escabeche is delicious hot as well.

This book has been entered into the special section of "go-to" cookbooks in my library.

5 out of 5 stars Just as Awesome in Person.......2007-06-29

I had the pleasure of meeting Daisy at the Oxford Valley Mall in PA. Her personality was just as impressive in person as she is on TV. I took my mom to meet her and she even took a picture with her and she signed our books. The recipes are awesome and she does a great job of telling you how to put the ingredients together....

If you love Daisy's TV Cooking Show, then this book is a great companion!

I try to watch Daisy's cooking show every Sunday on PBS. I never get tired of watching Daisy cook! Therefore, when I saw this book on Amazon, I just had to have it!

Well, the book arrived a month ago and I am pouring through all the pages & trying out Daisy's recipes (see my post script below) ....I'm not disappointed. The recipes are explained just as nicely as when Daisy shows her recipes on her TV show. The photos are very colorful and crisp too! The recipes are not your typical Latin food recipes because Daisy gives her recipes her own "twist".

              Follow-up:
.....I just tried Daisy's recipes on page 60 (Pork Picadillo) and on p.71 (Peruvian Minestrone) and they turned out great. They were not hard to duplicate. I did have to replace one of the ingredients in the first recipe for another, since I did not have it in my cupboard. But , the replacement ingredient did not alter the recipe.

Tonight I plan to try the recipe on p.161 (Daisy's Chicken Diablo) since this is a recipe that Daisy showed us on her TV Show not to long ago and looks easy to make. I've had Chicken Diablo before (at a restaurant), and loved it!

Daisy is an excellent culinary representative for her Puerto Rican heritage. Her expertise and travels have allowed her to combine her talents and present the most popular recipes of Latin America and Spain.
Magnífico Daisy ... keep those recipes coming!

                5 out of 5 stars A good read..........2007-02-20

Being a native, I was able to compare the recipes to what I was raised to expect from Neapolitan food, and I was pleased to find the recipes accurate. I would like to see a wider coverage of the food of the region and not just Naples, and as a previous reviewer noted, there are a few mistakes (there always seem to be little flubs in Bugialli's books), but I think it covers the feel of the region much better than Schwartz's book. His handling of such sacred topics as the sfogliatella make for good reading. All in all, like all of his books to date, I'm glad to own it.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Neapolitan cookbook in english............2004-03-08

Bugialli has again generated a well researched, technically precise and stunningly beautiful book. Bugialli is the only non-Neapolitan that could not only write the recipes down with uncanny accuracy, but capture and convey the uniquely Neapolitan aura that permeates all things that happen in the "real" city by the bay. A must buy for any cook's library!

2 out of 5 stars Nice travelogue but poor as a cook book........2003-07-31

Lots of beautiful photos of Naples and Campania.
Poorly edited with many errors on Neapolitan language. Obviously written by a non-Neapolitan.
Few photos of foods. Makes me wonder if the recipes were ever tested.
Better choice is Naples at Table by Arthur Schwartz.
Buy this for the pretty pictures of the Amalfi coast, because as a cook book, I think it's a dud.

5 out of 5 stars Cook Italian & Learn To Live.......2003-06-16

For any one who has ever been there, eating and cooking Italian is an adventure in living. No fuss no complications, just living life for the fun of it (that is the Italian way to enjoy being here) I have visited this wonderful country several times and this book takes me back whenever I feel the need to be in touch again. It is a must for any one who wants to feel what life in that great country is all about. For the beginner it will take you to one of the most enjoyable food fests anywhere. Try this book and you will be booking your next vacation in the land of wine, food, sun, music and love.

                  Book Description

A nostalgic trip down the aisles of America's five-and-ten-cent stores, this book illustrates and describes the extensive variety of glassware that was available to everyday consumers in the Depression years. Once a staple item along "Main Street, U.S.A.," dime stores such as Ben Franklin, S.S. Kresge, McCrory, G.C. Murphy, J.J. Newberry, and F.W. Woolworth sold attractive, practical glassware at affordable prices, ranging from tableware, tumblers, and jugs to crystal stemware and artistic cut glass. Today this merchandise has become highly collectible and is escalating in both price and demand. Using over 240 images, many drawn from original catalogues and advertisements, author C. L. Miller provides an informative and enjoyable guide for both new and experienced collectors. A brief history of the dime stores' most prosperous years sets the stage, followed by a wide array of the glassware sold. Current values for all items are included.

                      Book Description

Former star correspondent for CNN, Siobhan Darrow covered the world’s hottest war zones over the last two decades, reporting from the front lines in Moscow, Chechnya, the Balkans, Albania, Israel, and Northern Ireland. Her fearless pursuit of stories placed her in countless life-threatening situations, prompting Darrow to wonder what about her character so attracted her to adrenaline, and so alienated her from the family life a part of her longed for. Darrow approaches this question with the same honesty–and seat-of-the-pants courage–that established her reputation as a premiere reporter, and the answers she arrives at form this riveting memoir of a woman assigned to cover history in the making, even as she chases down the most elusive “get” of all: her own happiness.

I thought this book was pretty good. It was really intriguing to hear what a person in those situations really thinks about. She's had a very interesting life. She is a very intellectual writer.

I ripped through this book quickly, unable to put it down. the writing style was cynical, quick witted, and a touch raw.

adolescent girls should read this not only to learn the battles that other women have fought for their individuality, but also because the author points out how her personal battle was waged on the hand of a few bad decisions and what the price can be for making such decisions.

5 out of 5 stars More Than A Great Read!.......2002-01-22

This is a great story; well written, humorous, and full of fascinating "behind-the-scenes" glimpses of life as a CNN correspondent. In the end, however, the thing that really makes this book worth the read is the author's willingness and ability to share her own personal journey. Her story moved me deeply and made me freshly aware of the joys and challenges of my own life. It also left me wanting to hear more! When is her next book coming out?!

                      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2002-01-21

This is one of the best books I've read this year! Darrow is witty, warm, and wise. I found myself comparing my own childhood experiences with hers, and was amazed by how much we have in common. Darrow was honest enough to share the pain and humiliation she suffered growing up without much money, and I could relate.

Siobhan Darrow is a refreshing voice of truth in modern day autobiographies. I recommend this book to everyone! She will transport you all over the world in her global adventures, sharing her unique brand of humor and self-reflection. The book was so exciting, I read it in one evening and the next day began to read it again! As a young woman in the media, I am thankful to have such a great role model.
