Book Description
In Dodie Bellamy's imagined "sequel" to Bram Stoker's fin de siècle masterpiece Dracula, Van Helsing's plain Jane secretarial adjunct, Mina Harker, is recast as a sexual, independent woman living in San Francisco in the 1980s. The vampire Mina Harker, who possesses the body of author Dodie Bellamy, confesses the most intimate details of her relationships with four vastly different men through past letters. Simultaneously, a plague is let loose in San Francisco-the plague of AIDS.
Bigger-than-life, half goddess, half Bette Davis, Mina sends letter after letter to friends and co-conspirators, holding her reader captive through a display of illusion and longing. Juggling quivering vulnerability on one hand and gossip on the other, Mina spoofs and consumes and spews back up demented reembodiments of trash media and high theory alike. It's all fodder for her ravenous libido and "a messy ambiguous place where pathology meets pleasure." Sensuous and captivating, The Letters of Mina Harker describes one woman's struggles finding the right words to explain her desires and fears without confining herself to one identity.

Undead-- And Back In Print!.......2004-12-27
Bellamy's employment of language is intoxicating: her sentences swirling around like smoke in a fat-bellied glass pipe, the body of her work crackling with the brilliance of a heretofore unknown substance. This modern-day vampire tale set in San Francisco pounds a stake in the heart of literary conventions--transcending form and sexual orientation--and sends my blood rushing. _The Letters of Mina Harker_ is essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary literature.

Real or Not! Fascinating!.......2000-10-07
Real contains letters between Dodie Bellamy (Mina Harker) and Sam D'Allesandro; a story that was taped by Sam before he died in 1988; and a long very emotional, heartbreaking letter by Dodie that concerns the subject of death.
Being a fan of Sam D'Allesandro's writing ever since he wrote "Zombie Pit", I was so thankful to discover this wonderful little book , recommended by a kind literary friend, S. I started this book in the afternoon and didn't stop till I was finished in the early evening. The letters between Sam and Mina are fascinating to read, whether they are true or not. It was nice to learn Sam's real name. A lot of Sam's experiences I could relate to from my own life during the same time period. There's a lot of writing on sex and death, especially AIDS.
There's a wonderful preface included by another great writer of that time period, Robert Gluck. Dodie has been credited with creating this new narrative style, making the novel more real, and her correspondents could thus present the fictional part of themselves, their personalities.
If you want a wonderful literary book to read, be sure and secure a copy of this book. I just wish Sam was around to bring us more joy from his writing. We miss him like so many other writers we have lost to AIDS. What more can I say!

a different tone to the other gord the rogue books.......2005-05-01
As a long time AD&D fan, I read the first three gord the rogue books some years ago and loved them. I could never find book 4 until now. Having bought it from Amazon, I was excited to get started. I finished it yesterday and, maybe it's just been awhile since I read the others but this one seemed to have a very different tone. Gord himself was represented as an angry, bitter little man, even towards his own friends, which he didn't seem to be previously. The other 'heroes' were hardly sympathetic either. From reading reviews of his books I gather this change in attitude may be due to Gygax's problems with TSR.
What also bothered me was how good forces were represented. A Solar, for example, essentially an angel, was rude, arrogant, with no respect for life and little intelligence. Through this agent of good's actions evil was actually advantaged. Other forces of good are treated similarly in their discriptions. I guess some people like this approach, but to me, it doesn't make sense and isn't realistic within the scope of the world the story is set in.
The story itself is interesting, a real roller coaster ride, that reads very much like the playing of a D&D role-playing adventure which I think could turn off non role-players.
In all a fun story not particularly well told IMHO.

fine debut.......2006-03-10
I guess I should stop reading SF just because it involves gay main characters. It was never my genre, I generally find it too depressing, as it is the case with this book.
This is a fine book indeed: the author's lack of experience is clear only because of some clumsy character descriptions. The writing is already satisfying, the pacing good and the characters finely drawn and consistent.
It is the setting which is depressing: the world... well the universe we are given here is complex, believable, complete... just depressing: plenty of worlds where the law of the strongest is the only law, corruption, slavery, abuse are the unhappy rules. No way we can escape our own grim reality because we find it here, finely pictured, incredibly cruel.
The idea of the "Dream" I found extremely interesting, new and original. I think that just that makes the reading of this book worthwhile.
As mentioned above the two main characters are explicitly gay: sensitive reader should not shudder, though: there is no explicit sex, just a bit of believable, "manly" romance.
Dream a little Dream.......2005-01-12
The Dream is a place in the collective subconsciousness of The Empire, an uncountable number of souls strewn across a universe. It is how interplantary governments and corporations communicate.
The Silent are a small percentage of beings who can interact with the Dream. They are the messengers in this vast network, the ones who send and receive the information from planet to planet. Some regard them as a commodity, others as gods.
Kendi Weaver is one of The Silent. He has been a commodity, and now he wants to rescue other Silent from the same life. The only way to find them is through the Dream, but something is destroying the Dream.
Sejal is Silent. He is neither Commodity nor God, but a free citizen, and he wants to stay that way. Fortunately, Nature provided a way for him to keep his talent hidden. Unfortunately, he may be part of the key to what is destroying the Dream.
If the Dream dies, so will The Empire.
Steven Harper's story will keep your attention riveted on reading the story fromt he first page to the last.
The Dream held civilization together..........2004-06-26
It was a plane of existence that only the Silent could reach - a plane that allowed them to talk to, to reach other Silent Ones, no matter how far away, whether they were across the sea or across the galaxy. Aliens taught mankind about the Dream and soon they too are using it. It kept empires together. It allowed for interplanetary trade and helped corporations to function. Slipspace may allow ships to move about at faster-than-light travel, but the Dream allowed people to communicate and allowed civilization to exist.
So the Silent were important to have, but it was also important to keep them under control. So when a boy is found to be a super-Silent at the same time the Dream is starting to break apart, fear starts to overwhelm reason. Governments will kill to have him. They're even willing to go to war for him.
Somebody better do something fast, before the Dream is lost and civilization is lost with it!
Interesting first novel combining space opera and dreams.......2004-03-11
Dreamer, by Steven Harper
Players in my games and acquainted with my RPG characters know that dreams are a theme I enjoy. Dreamer is unusual in that it is a melding of space opera and these themes and many of the ideas that I employ in my games are coincidentally mirrored here. All sentient minds are connected to a plane of existence called the Dream, and a few individuals can access this plane for communication, and sometimes more.
The plot revolves around twin axes...the story of a young powerful dream sought by various sides, and a blight on the Dream itself. Interesting characterization and intriguing characters add to the unusual locales, both in and out of the Dream. In our time of tumult about such things, I was pleasantly surprised at the tenderness of a same-sex relationship as depicted in the book.
There are problems with pacing, its clearly the first book in a series, and some of the action of the book feels padded, and the ending clearly is ready to ramp up to sequels. These structural difficulties, while noticeable, do not greatly impact the enjoyment of the novel. The ideas, worlds and milieu carry the novel successfully.
Recommended.

Alton Brown's I'm Just Here for More Food: Food x Mixing + Heat = Baking should be required reading for those who truly want to learn how to become great bakers. In his own off-beat style Alton explains the science behind the process simply and in a manner you will not only remember, but subconsciously apply to all your baking endeavors. What is salt's role in the baking process? Why use eggs? Why is the way you mix important to overall success? Stylized and presented like his first book and popular Food Network show Good Eats, Baking is more like a goofy textbook rather then a pretty, photographed book with a bunch of recipes. If you are looking for a couple of quick, simple recipes to make cookies or bread, keep looking. If it's an education about the "Whats," "Whys," and "Hows" of baking with the intent to lift your skills to a new level: welcome!
Baking is a precise science that needs to be followed to the letter if you want success. It is highly recommended to read the introduction and "The Parts Department" section before attempting any of the recipes in this book. The essence of Alton Brown's book is not to simply follow recipes, but to get a deep understanding of what is going on during the baking process. The introduction goes over the layout of the book and how it should be used (the ingenious "method flaps" for instance), the low down on how to read recipes, the importance of measuring by weight vs. volume, and baking's five core steps. The "Parts" section explains just that: ingredients. What is the chemical make up of proteins, carbs, and fats? Why is their interrelationship so important to success? How well do you know flour, eggs, sugar, and baking soda? Once you have the basics down and your parts measured it's time to get mixing. The rest of the book is smartly broken up by the six major mixing methods (Muffin, Biscuit, Creaming, Straight Dough, Egg Foam, and Custards). Each technique is explored in detail with recipes to follow. You won't find any ultra fancy recipes in Baking. The focus here is on the basics and getting the basics down right. Rediscover some old favorites like chocolate cookies and muffins, buttermilk pancakes, biscuits, shortcake, multigrain loaf bread, and good old fashioned cheesecake. There is no denying it, follow Alton's advice and you will be a better baker. Guaranteed. --Rob Bracco
Book Description
In his best-selling first book, Food Network star Alton Brown described what happens when food meets heat. Now Brown is back and ready to revolutionize the world of baking-and more. Breads, cakes, cookies, pies, custards, ice creams: The popular host of Good Eats explores the science behind our favorite sweets-and savories-explaining it all in his own inimitable style.
The book opens with a complete encyclopedia of the core ingredients or "the molecular pantry"-what they are, what they do, and how they play together (or don't). The main part of the book is divided by mixing method: Biscuit, Creaming, Muffin, Straight Dough, Modified Dough, Eggfoam, Custards, and a section called As Well As . . . , which includes such specialized methods as crepes, popovers, mousse, and doughnuts. .
To underscore the importance-and ease-of mastering the mixing techniques, the book features a special design that adds a half-page flap to the opening page of each mixing section. Printed on the flap is the master mixing technique to serve as a ready reference for each recipe that follows in that section.
The more than 80 recipes cover all the basics any baked-good lover could covet, from pie crust to funnel cake to homemade Pop Tarts to cheese soufflé. Select master recipes feature variations that underscore the effects of altering ingredient ratios or preparation methods. The classic chocolate chip cookie, for example, can be interpreted in soft, chewy, and crispy consistencies.
At 304 pages, the trivia-filled tome also contains all the fun components Brown fans have come to expect: fact-packed sidebars, intricate illustrations, glossaries, appendices, equipment lists-the works. It's everything readers have been waiting for . . . and more! AUTHOR BIO: Alton Brown is the writer, director, and host of the popular Food Network television program Good Eats. His first book, I'm Just Here For the Food, received the 2003 James Beard Foundation KitchenAid Book Award for Best Reference Book. His second book, Alton Brown's Gear For Your Kitchen, was nominated for both a James Beard and an IACP cookbook award.

Heed the warnings.......2007-10-07
The first thing I attempted to bake out of this book was the pillow bread recipe. Read the philosophy, tool requirements, got stuff together - done. Bread rose. Wonderful! Bread baked. Not so wonderful. Was actually quite raw in the middle. This was intensely disappointing. I re-read the directions. Yep - everything is where when and how it should be. I look back at the reviews and hello! There are typos in this book. I thought it kinda weird that I should cook a great huge loaf of bread for no more than 25 minutes, most especially when my other bread recipes call for 40 minutes on much smaller loaves. I do not think this is Mr. Brown's fault. I do think it is the suspicious typo drama. Mr. Brown's other book is magic. No worries right off, wonderful food. The roasting methods are particularly accurate and pleasing. This book was a huge bummer. Perhaps if I had tried a recipe sans typo, I would not be typing this review. Oh well. I will forgive Mr. Brown if another edition comes out that redacts the terrible typos. Until then it's Martha Stewart and me, again.
gotta love the guy!.......2007-10-05
This is the book I've been looking for since I started cooking. I have purchased books, subscribed to magazines, visited web sites, etc. but I all have ever found was recipe collections. Alton teaches you how to cook, explains how and why it works and makes it entertaining. Just like his show on Food Network. Same goes for his other book - "I am just here for the food". These two books are the only ones you'll ever need, knowing the process you can create your own recipe collections.
love that alton brown.......2007-09-20
I bought this book for my husband, who is an aspiring pastry chef. He absolutely loved it. Alton Brown's sense of humor shines as much in the book as it does on his tv show. There are so many great tips and recipes! This book was well worth it.
I love this guy!.......2007-09-12
If you watch the food network you know Alton Brown. His books are as good as the show.
The recipes are good and he explains Why you do what you do.
I'd buy this book again!
Be Afraid.......2007-08-15
To qualify as a great or even good cookbook, it's important that the recipes be accurate. It's just not enough that the book and author are highly entertaining.
The newly "edited" edition is still filled with mistakes and that's just wrong on many levels, the first of which is wasting the consumers' time and money on preparing recipes which fail because of typos.
The responsibilty to make sure that recipes are correct is ultimately Alton's, since he's the guy cashing in on the deal, plus it's his name attached to the product... so who else am I going to blame?
My heavy duty KitchenAid Mixer fell off the perch, as they say, after struggling with the Focaccia dough (page 260). It needs at least 1 cup more water and the 4 tsps. salt (even Kosher salt) is way too much, let alone more salt sprinkled on top, just for good measure and guaranteed water retention for the next week.
I would happily cut Alton some slack here if this were not the "corrected" edition and if this were the only recipe with typos, but right now I'm a bit ticked off that I must shell out at least $300.00 to buy a new mixer.
Is it too much to ask that a "great" cookbook have accurate recipes, hmm?

Fantastic ancient needlework from Nasca, Peru.......2001-08-09
Alan Sawyer has a beautifully presented book here. It's not heavy on text, but that is partly due to the fact that as the author states, there have been virtually no proper excavations of Nasca burials to base information on.
What you get here is litrely pages of gorgeous photographs of existing early nasca needlework that the author was able to locate in various collections. He has concentrated on pieces with a provence in the nasca or ica valleys.
This book is illuminating, but to get the most out if it you should look at a book that has been written on the earlier, related Paracas style in order to really see the differences between the two styles, as they are often confused in non-specialist books.
Beautiful, colorful, inspiring and educational. This book is a must for anybody interested in ancient peruvian textiles or arts or who just wants to see rare textiles that are as good as anything else produced anywhere in the world over the last 2000 years.

Nicely photographed, some nice sweaters.......2004-01-08
The book itself is nicely put together, with color and b&w photos of the sweaters. There is at least one sweater in here that will appeal to you, although most are designed for younger women. There are a few for men, none for children. Most are inventive, which is refreshing since Rowan's typical line has styled itself towards the simple with bulky wools, etc. These sweaters take more work, and they are made either with the new line of Yorkshire tweeds or with Rowan magpie. Color photos accompany the instructions. Lots of fun to browse and contemplate, though I haven't made anything from these patterns yet so cannot say if the patterns themselves are easy to use.

Customer Reviews:
An easy read about a complicated talent.......2005-09-19
People use words like "off-beat" and "wacky" when it comes to Ernie Kovacs, but in truth the man had a real sense of humor. By this I mean he understood humor, could almost break it down to the atomic level in his head, and assemble wonderfully funny and original pieces from those atoms. Those of us who love humor love Ernie because he would create new forms of it instead of the trite and hackneyed ones that surround us to this day in bad sitcoms, awful sketch comedy shows, and terrible stand-up. Only when you look at Ernie's stuff do you recognize the stagnant brine most Americans call TV comedy and how ubiquitous it is.
This bio would be best if there was more from Ernie himself on his process, but since tragedy has made that impossible Ms. Rico has stitched together an impressive Persian rug of a tale using those who knew him and worked with him. She also provides exhaustive background on the goings-on in his life to give an excellent sense of perspective and accomplishment. You learn more about Ernie the man than about how he was able to come up with all of that great stuff.
Reading this book is like Ernie's life - funny, detailed, warm, intelligent, human, and over way too soon.
Well worth finding-or reprinting!.......2000-06-26
There have been three biographies of Ernie Kovacs in the last 25 years(well, one of the three is really Edie Adams' memoir); Diana Rico's is the best, and likely to remain so for some time-I wish I had written it myself! Ernie Kovacs was a fascinating, mercurial man with an eclectic and very strong appeal, and Rico manages to capture his personality, talent and tremendous charm without ever tipping over(as so many "star" biographies do)into bathos or hero-worship. Fair-minded, and with accuracy reflecting a lot of primary interviews and careful research, it's also just a plainly well-written, entertaining read. If you've a special interest in Kovacs, or are simply curious about who he was, and what the days of the roaring 50's rat-pack was like, this is a book to seek out.
Ernie Kovacs was a genius........1999-07-04
I know, we're reviewing the book and not the man, but it's pretty hard not to enjoy anything dealing with such a brilliant comedian as Ernie Kovacs. Even if it were just a dry accounting of facts, it would be interesting, because he was. However, it is very well-written and engaging. I don't know why Edie Adams refused to be interviewed for this book, because it certainly appears to be a loving tribute to her late husband. Her contributions are about the only thing that could improve this book.
