Book Description
Following on the heels of the popular Mammoth Book of Great Detective Stories, the The Mammoth Book of Vintage Whodunnits is an amazing collection of classic proto-crime writing taken from the pre-Golden Age of detective stories—1850-1905—and features literary giants of the era such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Maurice Leblanc, O. Henry, and Mark Twain among others.
Book Description
When it all began, it was just supposed to be a game: seven college students sitting down for an evening of role playing. But a real wizard intervened, and the students found themselves in a world where magic worked-too well-and caught up in a battle between the forces of slavery and freedom. Years later, Jason Cullinane, son of the now-legendary Karl Cullinane, has taken up his mysteriously vanished father's role as baron when reports reach him of an attack in his realm by a wolfpack that seems to be more than an ordinary wolfpack. When he and his comrades investigate, they find a rift into the world Faerie from which evil creatures are entering the mortal world to kill and conquer. Cullinane now must not only battle his father's old enemies in the Slavers' Guild, but somehow defeat this powerful supernatural menace. And the greatest danger to the band may come from one of their own who has seemingly switched sides in the struggle . .

A welcome renewal of an old friendship........2006-02-11
At least, that's how I felt about this publication.
It's true that I already owned Book Club editions of "The Road to Ehvenor" and "The Road Home."
But I found over time that these books and their first person narrative, at the time unique in Rosenberg's 'Guardians' series, had become my favorites of the series. Perhaps that's because I found them to be such an interesting extension of the original ideas of the 'Guardians' series, as well as a stylistic change from those books. Or perhaps just because I was approaching the perspective of the age or period of life from which the narration of Walter Slovotsky is written.
In any case, as with most every Rosenberg novel, both of these novels are a great entertainment in their own right. With this new omnibus, I can give my old editions, with their aging slipcovers and yellowing pages, a well-deserved rest.
Great Value if you didn't buy them years ago.......2005-01-02
I personally really hate it when people cry about how it sucks for a book to be reprinted but fails to realize that it is great that the books have gained popularity again.
Good for the Newbie, bad for the collector........2004-10-28
Personally, I hate it when an author or a publisher re-prints a book (or in this case 2 books) under a new title.
If you have already read or already own "The Road Home" and "The Road to Ehvenor" don't bother getting this book.

Book Description
Andromeda Romano-Lax, with her husband and two children, set out to explore the dazzling waters of the Sea of Cortez in a 24-foot sailboat. Inspired by Steinbeck’s famous 1940 book The Log from the Sea of Cortez, the author quickly proves herself an experienced and lyrical guide to one of North America’s most unusual and rugged places. Her vivid descriptions of the abundant marine life turn readers into armchair naturalists. An encounter with a mentally unbalanced skipper, a baseball game with local villagers, and a kayaking trip in a violent storm are among the adventures — and misadventures — Romano-Lax chronicles here. Including a map, a delightful blend of adventure, science, and philosophy, Searching for Steinbeck’s Sea of Cortez is a memorable trip to some of the most biologically diverse waters in the world.
Customer Reviews:
A good try.......2007-07-30
but I am not sure that anyone could really recreate the voyage of the western flyer and capture the same magic. The Sea of Cortez is different and so are the players.
Dull and slow at the start and unfocused.......2007-03-04
There were so many ways of tackling what could have been a splendid sea voyage. Instead, it appeared to have been a taxing, challenging, emotional and financial disappointment for the crew.
Although the book picks up in pace and focus at page 133 on, the author was confusing toward the reader in not letting us know at the beginning what this book was about. Was it truly to discover Steinbeck's old route, was it to explore the sealife of the Cortez waters? Was it a family sailing trip with a grumpy captain and a toddler who wailed and vomited almost daily? Was it just a mundane journal of a sea voyage gone wrong? I really wanted to enjoy this book and tried hard.
Sometimes I felt lost with the nautical or marine terminology. That's why I only gave this book three stars instead of four. The author becomes more of an environmentalist toward the end as well, ranting about how Mexico and its people and the tourists should take better care of the shores and the Marine life or else so many fragile ecosystems will perish, as they surely have since Steinbeck's time.
The family didn't truthfully follow the Steinbeck/Ricketts voyage as the four spent more time in northern Baja along the coast, a region so unlike the southern Baja with its colder climates and gustier winds. Since I live in Arizona and the Sea of Cortez is only a four-hour drive on Mexican backroads, I was especially wanting to read more on that part of the waters. But, that part of the trip came toward the end of the journey and was a hasty finale void of many more detailed observations given at the start of the book.
I will agree with other reviewers who said Andromeda was very critical of her former brother-in-law. She seemed critical of EVERYONE. Sometimes her descriptions of the Mexicans was downright rude, based on whatever bad experience she was going through at the time. In fact, she comes across as a very critical person toward everything, which makes enjoying her book hard.
The end, like many mediocre travelogues, ends anticlimactically. Time and money ran out and so did the book. The end meant an end of the sour mood and that was a relief. Still, I was left wondering what the main purpose was of this book? There were so many things the travelers should and could have done better through more thorough planning and better accomodations. The two young children would have been happier, too and not been so traumatized by some of the incidents that they endured toward the end.
Author is a whiner - it's tiresome - and there's NO INDEX.......2004-09-15
I agree with another reviewer who stated that the continual and constant trashing of the author's brother-in-law gets old real quick. But to make matters worse - she has a whining attitude about almost everything. Read Sparky's book - good tales by a contemporary who was on the cruise with Steinbeck. Worst of all - THE BOOK HAS NO INDEX - no way of looking up place names, creature names, etc. It's worthless as an on-the-spot guide.
Or how to pay for your two month vacation in Baja..........2004-09-08
I love Baja (visited at least annually for 20-plus years), and Steinbeck books, so the title of this book snookered me into buying it. When I heard someone had written a book to recreate the destinations of that earlier trip I eagerly sought it out. Misleading and disappointing. Frequent allusions/comparisons to Steinbeck/Ricketts' "Log" don't change the fact that this wasn't an expedition in any way, shape, or form...but simply an extended family vacation conducted on the cheap! The resultant book (with nothing but an intriquing title)was merely the way to pay for it. The first half of the book was mostly spent unnecessarily beating up on the poor brother-in-law, whom had volunteered to accompany the author (and her husband and small kids)and sail the very small borrowed sailboat. Five people on a 26 footer. Nearly anyone whom has spent much time in Baja has readily duplicated or exceeded the experiences reported in this book. Unfortunately I read the entire thing, presuming it would just have to get better, but no such luck. Funny how a title (and a pretty cover) can sell a book.
A Mixed Bag.......2004-05-20
Parts of this book are highly interesting, but others would have better been omitted. What I liked most about the book were the author's insights into the book that inspired her and her husband's journey - Steinbeck's Log from the Sea of Cortez. For anyone who shares a fascination with the Log from the Sea of Cortez, as I do, the author provides valuable background information on the book and the trip that inspired it. On the downside, the author seems fixated on trashing her brother-in-law, who piloted the boat her family used in attempting to re-create Steinbeck's journey. Obviously there was a personality conflict here, and her extended diatribes (which seemingly take up a full third of the book) seem mean-spirited and unwarranted. The book would have been vastly better if all of this material had been removed.

BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!.......2006-12-15
With all the great classic cocktail books out there, I wonder why it is necessary for everybody to try to do a "me-to" version. Many technical errors and incorrect information. Why bother?
Comprehensive, but hard to use.......2006-07-12
This book has a TON of drinks, but there are no color photos and the drinks are arranged by the name of the drink, not the type of alcohol or main ingredients. Plus, as a paperback, you have to hold it open to use it- not very handy. I probably wouldn't buy it again.
ok.......2006-04-28
I was not impresed with this book. While everything is sorted it is still kind of piled together(small print and crapping newprint paper with no space between anything). I looked up some of my favorite and the recipes were messed up.
Not very good for beginners.......2006-04-02
This book lists drinks only by their main alcohol ingredient ONLY. Not very helpful if you don't know the drink's main alcohol ingredient. What kind of bartender bible doesn't have a recipe for a cosmopolitan? Is an alphabetical list of all the dinks in the book too much to ask? Every time I use this book I get pissed off.
great gift.......2006-03-11
This book is excellent for beginner drinkers who attend bars. This book includes just about every mixed drink out there; plus more. It provides the reader with great detail as to what certain ingredients are and different variations of a particular drink. GREAT GREAT pocket book.

The Best Book on Ad Figures.......2000-01-09
If you are shopping for one reference book on advertising figures, search no further. Advertising Character Collectibles is the ideal book for beginning collectors and advanced collectors alike. The items pictured in this volume are a realistic cross section of what is available in this genre. The high end, nearly one of a kind pieces are here right beside the common for Dotz shows no bias.Though it has been more than three years since the price guide was updated, the majority of the listings reflect current market value. This is the book most collectors use as a blueprint for assembling their own collections and I would know- As publisher of a monthly newsletter on advertising characters, I am in contact with hundreds of collectors on an ongoing basis.Advertising Character Collectibles is the book most often referred to- It is our bible.
A Beautiful Book To Be Enjoyed By Ad Character Collectors........1999-12-15

Customer Reviews:
Way over my head!.......2007-09-04
This book didn't peak my interest in Shade making.....I was hoping to find a simple wood plan and all the ones I liked seemed way over my skill level.
What a wonderful surprise!.......2007-08-24
I work in both wood and metals and was expecting a basic volume of metalsmithing techniques. To my surprise, this book can be used in metalsmithing (example: dimensional layout drawings awayla), but it focuses on the use of colored paper (instead of mica or stained glass) and cardboard (instead of metals) Although it explores a medium I ordinarily use to design and make mock-ups, the drawings can easily be used in the metal shop using solder or riviting as a fastener instead of glue and tape and mica or glass in the place of paper.
Please note: These are vintage lighting designs put together by Popular Mechanics during the Arts & Crafts era and I would recommend it to anyone interested in this period of design and technique. Although some of the designs are a little 'dumpy', it would take little time or effort to change them to your liking. This book is a steal!
good book if you have a base in wood working.......2006-02-01
I like this book as reference for lamps in the arts and craft style however if you are looking for lots of step by step instructions you are out of luck. if you are looking for a good reference book and can visualise a project based on a few black and white drawing and some instruction then this book is for you.

Good Period Fireplace Source.......2007-07-21
The title is deceiving. The author should have really named this book "Fireplaces for a Period Home." She uses a lot of fireplace inserts, surrounds, combinations, firebacks, hob grates, and tile work in her book. Fortunately, this is what I wanted since I'm building a period home.
The book has a section on renovation & restoration, and design options as well as a short glossary.
Book Description
Fireplaces are compelling, sometimes even exotic, features of a room. More than simple household decoration, they combine elements of the practical and the artistic in both architecture and design. This beautifully crafted House Beautiful volume explains everything one might ever want to know about fireplaces.
There are three parts to the book: a style survey, a section on architecture, and another about design and decoration. Each section elucidates relevant need-to-know data, using visual examples of traditional, modern, and site-specific fireplaces for a variety of rooms and homes. For example, included in the design section are suggestions for furniture placement, lighting, and firewood storage, while decoration speaks to furnishings on or around the mantelpiece, fire screens, off-season usage, and placement of logs and andirons.
World-renowned architects and designers provide ingenious solutions to fireplace design for any dicor. There is an abundance of tips on integrating a fireplace with the overall ambiance of a room--the art, light, walls and floors. An arresting and beautiful visual portfolio covering all conceivable locales and styles, House Beautiful Fireplaces will inspire a lasting glow.
Customer Reviews:
Great Inspiration.......2005-07-13
Exactly what I was looking for... a "visual portfolio" to help me decide what I wanted in a fireplace for the setting I have. Lots of photographs depicting every style from rustic to contemporary or traditional, and all in tastefully decorated spaces that are just as inspiring. This book provided me with more than enough visual information to put together a plan of my own, and I know I will refer back to it for further decorating ideas.
Not that helpful.......2000-08-23
A pretty book but not that useful. Just found a brand-new Better Homes and Gardens book on fireplaces, which I like much better. The BH&G book has handsome photos but lots of tips on making over a dated fireplace (which we have to do), as well as choosing and positioning a new fireplace (which we also plan to do in our master suite). The Better Homes and Gardens Fireplace book shows a wider range of room and furnishings styles than this House Beautiful book, in my opinion.
House Beautiful Fireplaces.......2000-08-21
British West Indies review sounded like they were inhaling some fireplace smoke.

At the time of his death in 1977, Terence Rattigan was barely remembered by the theater-going public, yet 30 years earlier he was considered one of Britain's most important playwrights. Geoffrey Wansell's Terence Rattigan is the first critical evaluation of the author since his death and, as such, is a major contribution to theater history. More importantly, because Rattigan and most of his contemporaries are dead, Wansell is able to discuss freely their personal and sexual lives. Carefully documented and elegantly written, this biography adds immeasurably to our understanding of British gay male life and the evolution of a gay artistic sensibility.
Book Description
Geoffrey Wansell is the first writer to have been given full access to thousands of Terence Rattigan's private papers and to have talked at length to Rattigan's friends. From the heady days of his early success to the darker days of his decline in popularity, Wansell paints a captivating portrait of one of the century's greatest theatrical lights.

An exemplary biography of a gifted man.......2001-03-19
In Terence Rattigan: The Man And His Work, biographer Michael Darlow presents the personal history of one of the most successful dramatists of his generation. Despite attempts to declare Rattigan's work unfashionable, his plays were performed both on the stage and in the cinema. His prodigious body of work also included film screenplays, as well as scripts for both radio and television. A well known public figure in his lifetime, Rattigan kept his homosexuality private. Terence Rattigan: The Man And His Work is an exemplary biography of a complex, fascinating, influential, and gifted man who is secure in his recognition as one of the great dramatists of the 20th century.
