Book Description

The great virtue of this volume is that it reveals a lighter, comic side of Sade. He was a man obsessed, like many great writers, and his obsessions are still present here: his hatred of all things pretentious, his loathing of a corrupt judicial system, his damning of hypocrisy and false piety. One of the great anarchists of all time, he was nevertheless far from mad (as many pretended) and these works of fiction shed still another light on this most feverish of minds. But however heavy the subject, The Mystified Magistrate is infused with a light touch; it is revealing but never offensive.

5 out of 5 stars Marquis De Sade, lite.......2003-07-20

This was an excellent collection of some of De Sade's shorter works. The stories are quite funny and nice for a lite reading of Sade. I highly recommend this to those who dare not venture into some of his other more explicit works, but also to those who are looking to round out their Sade readings.

If you like this, or if you found it too mild, i highly recommend the 120 Days of Sodom and Justine, both fantastic books.

3 out of 5 stars my thoughts.......2003-04-19

the book is kinda boring if you've already read his more explicit novels.i started out w/juliette,so the mytified magisrtate is vanilla compared to hi other novels, but for those who just want a peek,i recommend this book to the fulliest.but for those who want ot jump feet first into sadism, read the 120 days of sodom.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, Marquis, Dat's da Way I Like It........2002-07-31

Yes, I've read "Justine" and "Juliette" and a plethora of other de Sade odds and ends, but this collection was true enjoyment. I think Donatien should have kept to short stories; these tales are priceless, devoid of the boring repitition of his novels; and ripe with evidence of self-supressed talent. I was mystified as to why he didn't apply this flare in "Justine" and "Juliette". A real shame, le Marquis.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2002-06-03

This is a fantastic collection of short stories. "Fraternal Cruelty," was probably my favorite "dramatic" story in the collection, and looks like it could be the basis for an Academy Award winning short film. "Love's Strategy," was interesting, I guess, and "The Teacher's Philosopher," was another strange one. "The Gascon Wit," was hilarious. These stories are for the most part easy to read, very funny, very dramatic, and at times exhilarating.

5 out of 5 stars De Sade is not for the weak of heart.......2001-07-06

Although the Marquis De Sade was harshly judged for his works, people of this day and time shoud have more of an open mind. Napoleon burned De Sades books in outrage, and although our consitution is based on the Napoleonic code....we have freedom a speech and press. All of De Sade's writings can be taken librally but one does need an open mind. This book is sexually explicit as are practically all of his writings. But for those with a open mind....and no children looking over their shoulder, it is a wonderful read.

4 out of 5 stars Adults and Kids!.......2007-10-06

My 15 yr old son and I just finished this book. The book itself is a little slow through spots, but overall, is wonderful! The story starts out in a small farm area with the goings on of small farm area life but before very long, we learn of ominous stories and tales that seem unimaginable to many of the townsfolk. Before long, the kids we have gotten to know find themselves deeply rooted in those very tales that had earlier seemed so unimaginable and are all in a great deal of danger. Worse yet, some of the people they have feared much of their lives are the very people they are having to turn to for help. They aren't quite sure who to trust. This is a magnificent tale that will have you reading late into the night just so you can find out what happens next. If it were not for the few slow moments in the book, this would be perfect. If you liked Eragon, you will like this one too.

2 out of 5 stars From The Two Rivers.......2007-10-01

At first i thought it was an addition to the new book. I started WoT when I was 12, I don't see why a normal (ok, very smart) person couldn't read the normal books... Who would trade pictures and big font for the real story, not an edited addition! If you are 10 years old or younger you should read this book though, the normal books are sortov advanced and you may not understand everything.

4 out of 5 stars A book to get lost in 2 jmeascsKeinnon.......2006-12-29

From the Two Rivers is a GREAT book. In this book Robert Jordan uses descriptive words and realistic speech. You may think the beginning is dry, but it gets BETTER!!!

Many people think splitting up The Eye of the World into two books(From the Two Rivers and To the Blight) is a money-making scheme. But trust me, I never would have dreamed of tackling an 800 paged book, like the Eye of the World.

P.s If you don't like lots of detail, I'd advise you to go search for a different author. Try my 2 favorite authors, Gerald Morris(Arthurian tales) or Tamora Pierce(Fantasy, magic)

5 out of 5 stars A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for Midwest Book Review.......2005-11-02

I decided to read this book after my eleven-year-old son told me he liked it. This book is for adults too. Jordan is a wonderful writer and he has created a very believable fantasy world. The adventure, drama, and characters are fascinating. My personal favorite was the warder in the story. Jordan could not put him in the plot enough for me. In fantasy the world has to be believable and Jordan achieved this. I thoroughly enjoyed the several evenings I spent reading about the Two Rivers, its people, and all the unusual places Rand al Thor and his comrades went. The villians were also interesting and added enough conflict to keep me reading more. Jordan has written several books in this series which will undoubtedly please those that get a chance to read this book. And don't skip the Earlier Ravens chapter or the Prologue Dragonmount chapters on pages xi and xxxv. Many readers do, opting to begin reading at chapter one. In this book those chapters include some of the book's best and most powerful writing. Don't skip over those chapters. They are very good.

So... I got this book because I was out of Diana Wynne Jones books to read and it was beside her books on the shelf. I'd heard that this series was great but didn't want to carry around the huge hardcovers that you see at the library.

I enjoyed the book. It took a few chapters for me to be won over but by the end, I cared about the characters and their fates. I *really* appreciated the glossary. The book became much more comprehensible for me after I discovered it. I also appreciated not having to lug a huge book around!

Try David Eddings and Terry Brooks, and of course Diana Wynne Jones...they're my favs

5 out of 5 stars Helped Me Get Into DS9.......2005-05-05

I'm suprised to see that so many people hated this book so much I thought it was very enjoyable. I hate how Worf isn't in a lot of the TNG books so I loved that he had a good part in this one. I was kinda shocked that the cover of the book didn't mention anything about Captain Sisko and training the Tenakis at all. Kai Winn's portion of the story was very brief and that was all that was advertised.

The book revolves around Captain Sisko and most of the major characters on DS9 going on a mission the a foreign planet leaving Kira behind to help manage Kai Winn who is on a 60 day trial of command of the station. The team finds a race of people who use special "tech" to get around their daily lives. But attacking people know how to cut off the tech so the crew has to teach the people how to fight. I dunno where the story is headed but it's going to be a tough one to pull off for the team.

5 out of 5 stars Patience is a time honored virtue.......2002-05-06

As stated in the title of this review, patience IS a time honored virtue. I found myself almost ready to put this book back on the shelf and forget about the other two as well. This is somewhat like a "Clancy" novel where you have to trudge through some of the minutia to get to the good stuff which is in the second and third books. I found the second and third books to be very insightful and an extreme joy to read, and in keeping with the authors style of good writing. In a way, this is no different than a single novel where it starts off slow and finishes very fast. Pocket books should've put this out in hardback as a single novel, however, sinced KW Jeter's "Warped" fiasco, they've steered clear from DS9 hardbacks. I would definitely recommend this small trilogy to any true trek fan.

    1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2002-03-05

This is about the most disappointing DS9 or Trek book I've ever read. I'm afraid this author got famous writing game books and it shows here -- he acts like characters don't have background.
I'd leave anything with is name on it on the shelf. Go read
Uruhu's Song again instead of anything by him.

2 out of 5 stars "The Conquered" doesn't put up much of a fight.......2001-03-04

THE PLOT: This is the first of a 3-book series dealing with a time when Bajor takes over the station for a trial period of 60 days. Kai Winn is in command, and her past is revealed through a series of flashbacks to the Occupation and her actions to help the resistance. Worf, Sisko, O'Brien, Quark and Odo are stranded on a planet where all the citizens have advanced technology that has reduced them to a complete dependency relationship. Renegade Cardassians have invaded the planet and have no trouble picking off the inhabitants -- all they have to do is cut the power to the technology. Dax and Bashir are also on the planet in a different environment.

WHAT I LIKED: Dax and Bashir's trials and tribulations aren't bad. Interesting interplay with some cadets.

WHAT I DIDN'T: Kai Winn's character comes off far too "mature" for the period, and belies the changes when she actually reached power. Major Kira's character is barely fleshed out, and mostly appears as a caricature of the real character on the series. None of the four stranded characters are worth reading about here, and are pale imitations of the real characters on the series.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Conquered indeed are defeated and the book doesn't put up much of a fight to be interesting: 2.00 lilypads out of 5.00.

2 out of 5 stars Hard to tell where this trilogy is headed........2000-04-19

I love reading DS9 novels, but this one puzzled me. Where is this series headed? I don't like the way the book focused so much on the Defiant away team, and the planet that they are trying to help. It's hard to really care about the aliens on this planet, because we don't get much information on them, and what we do know makes them seem annoying and not too bright. I was much more interested in the situation on DS9, with the mysterious invasion taking place. But there are very few pages devoted to this assault. I'm hoping that the next book will put the focus back where it should be -- Deep Space Nine.

3 out of 5 stars Lady and Sons cookbook set.......2007-05-14

I watch Paula Deen's show on TV and love it. But I was disappointed in the cookbooks. The recipes are packed with fat and not a good choice for people who have high cholesterol or those who are watching their fat intake.

4 out of 5 stars The Lady and Sons too........2007-01-11

I live in England and so had never heard of Paula Deen before. She was recommended to me by an American friend in California, so i thought i'd check her out. I found that in this book, although the recipes look really homey and good, and they are pretty simple, they are for huge amounts of people! I had to reduce everything down from like 10-12 people to 4 as i do not have that many people in my family! I did find it difficult when it came to the branded seasonings, but got my friend to tell me how to make a substitute, so it went fine. I would recommend this book because it is simple home cooking for the normal person, not the experienced chef! The terminology she uses is easy to understand, and her story in the beginning is so sad.

5 out of 5 stars Another Delicous Book from Paula Deen!!!.......2006-11-10

Paula Deen is definnitely my favorite - and if you sample any of the recipes in this book - you'll know why!!! Nothing fat-free here - thank goodness - just good old fashioned home-style cooking - the kind of food everyone really wants to eat!!! When I make a Paula Deen recipe - I'm always asked for seconds - the diet gets put on hold!!!

5 out of 5 stars Compliments to the chefs.......2006-03-26

I have the other books of Paula's and this is like the cherry on the sundae. It compliments the other books and is just like her - fantastic. Have only had this book a short time so have only tried 3-4 recipes so far. Each one has been delicious and easy to put together. If you like Paula's show, you'll love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Paula is Queen.......2006-01-15

Paula has changed my Yankee family's outlook on Southern cooking and they have finally come around to seeing it the way of this old KY boy. Her comfort food is so tasty and her recipes are so simple even the man in the house might enjoy them.

5 out of 5 stars As title indicates.......2007-03-09

Just as the title indicates, both knit and crochet patterns in one convenient book. As an advanced beginner knitter, I found there were several patterns I could already tackle.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent for close-fitting garments.......2007-01-30

This book had been recommended for instructions for working with Lycra and on fitting a basic bodysuit for ballroom dresses. Having read through it, I can see why. It provides an excellent pattern in many sizes and the "elastic" section alone is worth the money. I'm in the process of building the entire dress off the basic pattern. JB

5 out of 5 stars The Wrap-Up: many pretty and wonderful knit or crochet projects.......2006-06-10

Lion Brand makes yarns that are widely available in the US. Their yarns range from bulky, decorator yarns to funky furry wild stuff.

"Just Wraps" has patterns for everyone, from vintage shrugs to wildly furry, wormy neck warmers. Some of the patterns really appealed to me, such as:

          1. The Vintage Shrug: this is a flat ribbed piece with closed cuffs that wraps around your shoulders and keeps your arms warm. Very pretty, plain and would suit anyone.

          2. Kimono Shrug: A batwinged, large wrap featured on the cover. Very dramatic. This could be knit in a more dazzling yarn and worn as an opera coat.

          3. The Cable and Lace Poncho--a sort of capelet in cables in mid grey, very tailored and elegant over a turtleneck in the fall.

          4. Serapes, both for men and women. The color choices were beautiful.

          5. Granny square wraps: several models for the crochet fan.

There are several children's patterns, too. 30 patterns in all, knit and crochet, mostly knit. And mostly simple to knit. The book has wide cover flaps, allowing the knitter or crocheter to mark their place easily. A beautifully photographed book, well-priced. If you don't like the choice of yarn, it's not hard to substitute something else, even your own hand-spun yarn, as the fit of most wraps is forgiving.

A useful book with some dramatic patterns as well as standard, useful ones. This looks like a real winner.

          Customer Reviews:

          1 out of 5 stars Preachy.......2007-06-10

I bought this book because I am always looking for hints to help me help my ADHD husband become more organized. This book was more about Regina Leeds than about organizing. And she characterized those with ADD/ADHD as "lazy" which demonstrated her enormous ignorance. I tossed it into the recycling bin.

3 out of 5 stars Too much tofu, not enough meat.......2006-03-29

Yes, I need to organize my office - but I also need to organize my books, my closet, the pantry shelves, and the cat's toys. I am cognizant of the deep psychological implications of constant clutter, but I would prefer to get my space organized before I meditate on that aspect of the disarray. And I totally agree with the reviewer's comment about overpriced dinner parties. Let's get real! No `housewives, corporate execs and business people' I know would fritter that amount of money on dinner, nor do I consider movie stars or producers to be realistic role models for organized living.

For me, this book neither confronted nor eased the painful step-by-creaking step journey of sifting your precious possessions, only to come to the realization that what you have been keeping is not a `memento' but an anchor to your past and a hindrance to your progress. Far from her desire to bridge the gap between Thomas Moore and Suze Orman, she made the environment more confusing. This book is neither `Zen' nor `die-hard' organizing; it's more like `Reality TV'.

Although some people doubt the authenticity of Feng Shui, it has been an essential planning tool in the Far East for thousands of years - chicanery cannot survive that long! A fundamental precept is that one must be organized, uncluttered, to succeed in life. A FAR better anti-clutter book is 'Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life' by Karen Rauch Carter. It does lack an index, but her ideas are much more concrete and, no, you do not have to paint your front door purple.

For an introspective, esoteric view of clutter, read 'Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui' or `Creating Sacred Space With Feng Shui', both by Karen Kingston. Although it is not an instruction book on organization, `Sacred Space' by Denise Linn also confronts on the deep-seated malaise of clutter.

2 out of 5 stars Just an Okay Organizing Book.......2005-09-16

I expected more from this book. I was looking for some great organizing tips, but there was nothing new in this book that I haven't read elsewhere before. Many of the tips (and the zen philosophy on being organized) could be found for free on the internet. If you're new to organizing or not very organized at all, this book may help you. If you're pretty organized to start with, you won't find anything special.

3 out of 5 stars Great, but need to adapt to your situation.......2005-07-29

The author notes that most of her clients have assistants and/or housekeepers. I have neither, but am my own in both cases. I did find the book inspirational, though not a read from cover to cover. I'm flipping through several organizational/clutter buster books at one time.

5 out of 5 stars Spirituality synergizes with functionality.......2004-02-09

"Creating Order and Peace in Your Home, Career, and Life," is a tall order and author Regina Leeds is up to the task. The Zen of Organizing goes beyond helpful tips (although it is full of them) to help the reader explore the nature of their relationship with their possessions. Leeds takes you by the hand on a journey to a better life beyond the clutter. The book opens with a discussion of how and why you can succeed in organizing, continues with a detailed area-by-area action plan, and finishes by tying it all together and addressing maintenance.

In the "Getting Started" section, Leeds prepares you for the journey ahead. Organizing isn't easy even though it's simple. Everyone carries emotional baggage that ties in with the physical clutter in their lives. Prior to accomplishing anything, one must identify goals and challenges and then plan for success. The Zen of Organizing lets you know that you are in for a challenge in putting your life in order. It assures you that you're up to that task by helping you break it down into manageable tasks and providing some exercises geared to establish your motivation.

The main body consists of several chapters with specific advice for dealing with your work space, closets, bathroom, kitchen, common rooms and children's rooms. At each way point, you get a helping of common sense advice as well as deeper insight into why the common sense advice has been so hard to follow before. It's obvious from the stories she tells that Leeds has worked for and with people who have more money than the average reader. The principles she espouses, however, are universal: Eliminate, Categorize, Organize. This stuff works whether you're organizing your villa in Spain or your bachelor pad in Venice. Everyone has stuff. Everyone has issues. If you follow the advice in this book, your stuff and your issues will both become easier to manage.

The spirituality in The Zen of Organizing fits seamlessly into the functionality. It's about getting your life organized which is impossible unless your life can reflect your own inner peace. There is one chapter on Feng Shui which I've always thought of as a load of superstitious hooey. After reading this chapter, I see it as some common sense rules for space management as well as some superstitious hooey. A short chapter can be forgiven and doesn't detract from the clarity of the book as a whole. An important message that spoke to me is where the author says that organization shouldn't be used as a weapon in the relationship wars. You cannot create harmony while destroying someone else's peace. That alone is worth the price of admission.

The Zen of Organizing is well-organized (no surprise) and as profound in its details as it is detailed in its profundity. It lives up to its promise and has helped me create order and peace in my home, career and life. Anybody who is already organized could probably pick up a few pointers here and anybody who isn't already organized needs the kind of help offered in this book. Reading this book is the closest thing to having a personal organizer/spiritual guru/shrink/friend stand by and support you while you get your life together.

5 out of 5 stars If you paid full retail for this book ... YOU LOST!.......2002-08-13

I picked this up ... at a discount bookstore and could not have been more delighted. After first being introduced to Wolf on the ...morning radio program, I can't get enough! Unlike some celebrity authors, this book was actually written by Warner Wolf. It reads just as though he were speaking to you during one of his rants during a broadcast. Warner has a very unique take on the sports world and he "gets it". If you "get it", you will enjoy this book. If you don't, you probably stumbled upon this book by accident...

                  4 out of 5 stars Fun reading.......2002-05-04

Lots of short chapters. Each on a different subject, so you can put the book down anytime and not need to remember a big story when you pick it back up. The author has a good sense of humor and covers some interesting subjects.

5 out of 5 stars If You Had Warner Wolf & No Laughs...YOU LOST!!.......2002-01-05

One of the truly great personalities in sports broadcasting, Warner offers his unique perspective on everything from baseball to golf, and most points in between. Wolf is so brutally honest about his career and the people he has met that you have to admire his step-up-to-the-plate, fresh takes on a variety of subjects.

This is a real page-turner, written in a light vein and laugh-out-loud funny! There are also a few surprises in store for the many fans of the Don Imus radio show, whose impression of Warner may be only from the few minutes he is allowed for his sports reports there. Warner doesn't mince words, but a lot of what he has to say is pretty deep, once you get past the laughs.

I really enjoyed this book. It's for fun and it's a quick read, but the author also makes the reader think. "CHANGE THE RULES!" An entertaining book doesn't HAVE to be only for laughs...this one will also make you say, "Hm-m-m-m-m!" I would recommend it to anyone. Even my wife(who yells, "Isn't there anything ELSE on?", whenever I turn on a TV sporting event)loved it. It has enough substance outside of the sports environment to make a book that's even interesting to sports HATERS!

You won't regret the few bucks you'll spend for "Let's Go To The Videotape!"

                  2 out of 5 stars "Gimme a break".......2001-09-04

Warner Wolf is an endearing character and a fabulous sportscaster. Never one to pull a punch, Mr. Wolf makes it his lifelong ambition to correct all idiotic rules and misnomers in modern sports. The problem is that he does it much better as a television personality than as a writer. I have no problem with opinionated people, but in a novel at least some effort should be made to offer the arguments of both sides before tendering the author's opinion. Also, there are so many chapters that are no more than a few paragraphs long. I found that to be somewhat tedious. It is more enjoyable to read a book where the author spins the story around many similar events and ties them together rather than penning numerous disjointed anecdotes. Nothing more is revealed here than many of Mr. Wolf's fans do not already know so they will be disappointed. The argument about the admission of Pete Rose into baseball's Hall of Fame hardly ranks up there with the exclusion of Galileo from the Catholic Church. Gimme a break!

2 out of 5 stars It's Warner Lite! Very Light.......2001-07-02

"Let's Go to the Videotape" consists of 112 short anecdotes, observations and stories packed into 303 pages. To say that "Let's Go" is quick reading is to overstate the obvious. If this compilation had no weaknesses other than brevity, it could be highly recommended. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. Mr. Wolf is an entertaining and very popular TV sports newsman. I looked forward to his 11:00 PM slot on NYC's Channel 2 for years. He is also a very able-and serious- public speaker. Mr. Wolf is in a different element here and his writing skills fall resoundingly short of his broadcasting abilities. Is this for a lack of effort? To be specific, many of the "chapters" could have easily been combined into a more concise format. Also, the grammar, or lack of same, cries out for an EDITOR! Did Warner, or his ghostwriter, ever notice the spell check icon? This is an affliction common to many books these days. Editing is an expense to be cut! More importantly, Warner (the publisher) should either invest in a fact checker or Warner (the author) should refresh his memory.i.e: 1) He mistold the tale of Mickey Mantle's 1956/1957 holdout by $40,000- a fortune in those days. 2) The "Bad News" Barnes basketball player was Jim, out of Texas Western (now Texas El Paso) and later the Knicks. 3) Chapter 84 ("Hello Allie") utterly glosses over how unpopular Allie Sherman was during his disastrous tenure as coach of the NY football Giants. The franchise needed 20 years to recover from that clown and his disastrous trade of the great Sam Huff. The author blew that one! If I had read with a red pencil, I could compile a longer list, but I'm certain the point is made. This is lightweight stuff. No harm no foul but no red meat either. I can't resist a closing pun: If you paid full hardcover price for this one, YOU LOST!
