Book Description
The River Ki, short and swift and broad like most Japanese rivers, flows into the sea not far south of Osaka. On its journey seaward, it passes through countryside that has long been at the heart of the Japanese tradition. And it flows too past the mountains and the villages, past the dams, ditches and rice fields that provide such a richly textured backdrop to this novel.
Powerful enough to sweep away people on its banks and placid enough to carry along with its flow a sumptuous wedding procession, the River Ki dominates the lives of the people who live in its fertile valley and imparts a vital strength to the three women, mother, daughter and granddaughter, around whom this novel is built. It provides them with the courage to cope, in their different ways, with the unprecedented changes that occurred in Japan between the last years of the last century and the middle of this century.
Sawako Ariyoshi, one of Japan's most successful modern novelists, describes this social and cultural revolution largely through the eyes of Hana, a woman with the vision and integrity to understand the inevitability of the death of the traditional order in Japan. Ariyoshi writes with a love for detail bound to a broader understanding of the importance of the geographical and biological forces that mold her characters--and the result is a story that flows with all the vitality of the River Ki itself
"... like The Doctors's Wife, examines with compassion the tensions and satisfactions of women in traditional Japan."--J. Thomas Rimer, A Reader's Guide to Japanese Literature.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but flawed.......2005-05-30
'The River Ki' is an interesting look at Japanese culture before, during and in the immediate aftermath of World War II. Its portrait of that culture is extensive and informative, a true look for foreigners not familiar with the Japanese.
However, despite this strength, the actual plot itself is mediocre. A lot of the characters are not well thought out. The story tends to meander and jump around without a lot of explanation of how characters got from point A to point B. A good read, but not an excellent one.
3 generations of Japanese women.......1999-07-02
This is one of the best generational sagas about Japan that I have read. All three women in the book represent a time of change, yet all three are multi-dimensional and understandable characters. It is difficult to find quality Japanese liturature in English by women. This is worthy of the name "classic"

Excellent - Even after the 6th Re-read.......2000-11-02
I have been following the Dragon Nimbus for quite a while. Inadvertantly, I began with the Dragon Nimbus History, therefore The Loneliest Magician was the last one I read before I had to start waiting on sequels. I admit that I thought those books were somewhat light and a little bland, but this particular one stole onto my favorites list almost of its own volition.
Krej was a great bad guy (I love the weasel thing!) and Rejiia picks up the burden nicely. The strain with Brevelan and the ambiguous paternity of her first son puts a little realism into all three characters involved.
Mikka and her cat...I don't believe I have ever read anything quite that original(from a cat person's perspective) and I look forward to the resolution of that.
Jack or Yaake (whatever!) is my favorite of the whole series (with the possible exception of Amaranth the cat/bird!) and his journey of self-discovery was fascinating. Katrina was a poignant one and I found myself admiring her greatly. You end up wanting those two to meet so much...
All I can say is read it. Read all of them (Including the History - they grow on you). This series may lack some of the depth and general gothic darkness of the more popular epics but they're sweet and well worth the time and they made me smile repeatedly to myself! A must for cat fans!
Stunning! Absolute must read for the fantasy genre!.......1998-01-10
I have never read a series as magical, mesmerizing, amazing, or beautiful as this. The way the author makes you feel as if you're part of the book; I could close my eyes and be flying right along with the dragons and casting spells right beside the magicians; I loved the heroes and hated the villians; I cried along with the sad times and laughed with the happy times. I lost alot of sleep over this series. I couldn't put it down. This is an ABSOLUTE must read for anyone who likes fantasy. Do not pass this up! You would regret it.

Great Read!.......2003-05-21
I read this book for the first time about 10 years ago. Before Y2K and before the 1997 film Titanic tweeked everyones interest in the Titanic. The main story deals with the attempt to raise the Titanic from the ocean floor and transport it to a location where it can be maintained and saved from further decay.
Aside from the plot there were some very good subplots. One dealt with the YTK problem. This book was published a decade before YTK and way before most people, like me, were even aware that there was a YTK computer problem. The solution offered in the book obviously was not one that came to pass but it was still interesting to read about the nature of the problem and the difficulties that could arise if left unchecked.
The technology used to raise the Titanic was well described. I am not that scientific or math savvy and so I cannot say if the technology described is currently possible but it seemed possible the way Clarke described it.
The story is set around the year 2012, the 100 year anniversary of the sinkning of the Titanic. I'm quite sure some of the technology mentioned in the novel does not exist. One invention involving the future of windshield blades and keeping rain off of an automobile windshield was interesting. On the other hand I found the whole "M-set" thing to be beyond me. I'm not sure what role it actually played in the overall plot. I gather that the "M-set" is used in other novels and may make more sense to those that have read more of Clarke's novels.
Lastly, this book is a quick read. It is not to deep or to shallow. An excellent book to read during breaks on the job or to read during an evening when you have time to kill.
The Clarke name says it all.......2002-08-15
Everyone knows this author; Arthur C. Clarke is a genius of his time and ours.
I myself think anything dealing with Titanic is going to be a boring attempt at a topic that has been very over done, but I actually enjoyed this book. This was a story I felt I had to concentrate on; I was trying to figure out the math questions on my own without much success but a headache, but don't let that put you off, if I concentrate to much on anything my head begins to throb, anyways:
The story line is fairly, well to be attempted. To bring Titanic up and of course it's going to take a few pretty pennies to do so. So why not make a big deal about it and have a race, two sides battle a way to the prize and to the success of having to bring up a snapped in half, ocean liner that sunk a hundred years ago? The interesting part is the year this book was written in and the year the characters are placed in, and of course what year you read the book. I was shocked at the way this author thought of the future, and it was so scary a mind could think that up.
I can't remember but years ago, people wanted to bring up the Titanic; they should of read this book and just left their grubby hands off it. (I think they did)
There is robots, huge squid, big high on their horse characters and over the top genius on this case and I even liked them.
The characters are well, not really that important, it's the idea and plot in the book. Sometimes I lost myself in all the gumbo jumbo about how, when, where, and exactly the way your going to do it, but still it was a good book. The idea of M-set interested me much and I even read the little, explanation of it at the end of the book. WoW!
I'd say if you like Clarke and his books, read it. If you like the idea of Titanic, read it, if you like sci-fi, Read it. I think it's a good thinking book and worth the time.
A lack of direction causes this book to become lost.......2000-08-15
Clarke is a visionary, and he has prophesized some incredible ideas long before they were mainstream. He continues to explore fascinating scientific thoughts and insights in this book about the raising of the Titanic. However, I find that the book has no central focus. Attempting to use the Titanic as a focal point, Clarke jumps from story to story -- about the Mandelbrot Set (a fractal pattern that is self-replicating), an invention in the field of windshield wipers, automated undersea exploration, and the lives of several diverse characters -- while never focusing the story on any overlapping theme or circumstance. In fact, the story of the Titanic is written off early on and given very little play. It seems Clarke would have been better off simply writing an essay about new technologies instead of wasting the readers time with simple plot twists, one dimensional dialogue, and emotionless characters.
Mr. Clarke is still, in my eyes, a great visionary thinker. He also writes a good sci-fi story. However, this one certainly isn't it. Read it for the ideas, read it for the insights, but please don't read it for the plot.
3 and 1/2 Stars.......2000-07-08
This is not a bad book, but for an Arthur C. Clarke novel, it is something of a disappointment. Although the concept of sub-plots is common in Clarke's works (and indeed, in all of science fiction) it is taken too far here. The whole long sections about the M-Set, the Millennium Bug, the inventions of Roy Emerson, and the homelife of the Craig family have no relevance to the actual plot of the book, and those sections encompass the heart of the book. Yes, the M-Set is interesting, but it should've been allowed it's own book if it is this important (even a 15+ page essay on it is included after the story). Meanwhile, the Titanic saga is relegated to almost side story status. Now, don't read all that and think I didn't like the book. I did. It's just that most of Clarke's other works are so much better (even the oft-critized 3001). Not a bad Clarke, but for the love of God don't start your collection here. Spring for Childhood's End, 2001 or 2010, or Rendezvous With Rama first.
Can you say "too much detail" ??.......1998-07-16
I wish I could share in the other reviewers' enthusiasm for this work. I've read many other Clarke novels, and frankly, I don't feel this one is up to par. It is a quick and entertaining read, however, and not without its charms; but there seems to be too much information. At first, it leads one to believe that some events may lead to something later in the book, only to fade into obscurity, as merely a diversion.
I do share Clarke's fascination with the M-set, being an armchair mathematician and computer programmer, and it is wonderfully described in the text, but I fail to see the relevance to the overall theme of the story. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I don't think so. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for my hardcover copy (I picked it up at a Library book sale for $.75), so I think I got my money's worth for the 260-odd pages (also short for a Clarke novel). It would have been better as a short story.

Customer Reviews:
Two novels: one self-indulgent, one near-classic.......2002-02-02
The Ghost from the Grand Banks: I'd never heard of this novel before finding it at the library, and I quickly found out why. It's a rather self-indulgent outing by the master, spending more time demonstrating his erudition than furthering the rather thin plot, which involves raising the Titanic. He has some successful predictions in here (the Y2K problem, though he misjudges both its impact and solutions), and some unsuccessful ones (the Mandelbrot set as a fashion object). All in all, this is an uncharacteristically forgettable outing.
The Deep Range: Now this is more like it. The first sentence - "There was a killer loose on the range" - grabbed me, bringing me back to the days when I first read this book as I was just getting into science fiction. Here we have a future world where food is becoming scarcer, and whales and plankton must be harvested to feed the teeming millions. Into this comes Franklin, a traumatized astronaut looking for a new career. We cover the problems he encounters, both personally and professionally, concluding with the moral one of eating whales at all.
Still something of a rambling tale, but it's out of the classic days of sf, and it brought back fond memories for me, and I enjoyed it, regardless.
Two Tales from the Sea--in the classic SF mode........2001-09-03
THE GHOST FROM THE GRAND BANKS was written more than a decade ago, telling a tale of an attempt to raise the Titanic in the early 21st century. It was only a few years later that James Cameron's TITANIC caused enough stir in interest for the old ship's future fate that such attempts to raise the old tin pot now don't seem so outlandish at all. This novel, written in typical Clarkean style, is filled with science and technology fitted to a spare and efficient fromework of a plot. Diversions into the world of mathematics via the 'Mandelbrot set' makes for a fascinating counterpoint to the main story.
In 1957, the year the Space Age began, ACC penned THE DEEP RANGE--about near-future undersea farming and exploration of Earth's "inner space." The author's love of the sea and it's creatures was prominently shown in this evocative novel. In the decades since it was published, the world has undergone a true revolution in attitude toward marine mammals and their habitats. Whale song has been studied, protective covenants established to preserve endangered species, and exploration of the seas continues. A classic tale that sometimes rankles the contemporary mindset, but exposing all kinds of future possibilities.

Braising--cooking food slowly and at low temperatures in a closed pot with a little liquid--produces deeply flavorful food. Molly Stevens's All About Braising is a definitive exploration of this soul-satisfying approach to food. With 125 simple recipes for braises of all kinds--from meat and poultry through seafood and vegetables, plus a thorough anatomy of technique (Stevens explores oven versus stovetop braising, for example)--the book will please cooks at every skill level. Most importantly, perhaps, it will send them to the kitchen to prepare enticing dishes such as Braised Endive with Prosciutto, Whole Chicken Braised with Pears and Rosemary, Duck Ragu with Pasta, and Veal Shoulder Braised with Figs & Sherry. Braises can also taste as good or better the next day, and Stevens supplies advice for second-day service. Included, too, is an "Opinionated Pantry" which, besides exploring relevant ingredients, expresses Stevens's ongoing commitment to using only the best and freshest available.
Throughout, Stevens's offers sensible, rewarding counsel. "If it comes down to a matter of cooking or not cooking dinner for your family," she says, "I recommend buying commercially raised chicken [as opposed to locally produced or other naturally raised poultry]. Make a satisfying home cooked meal, and sit down and enjoy it with your family." In other words, Stevens is wise. "The act of cooking on a regular basis will make you a better cook," she concludes, "and will improve the quality of your life and of those around you." --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:
very good book, energy concern.......2007-10-02
This is a very good book on the subject, I haven't know much about braising before, more familiar with stew. The book presented good knowledge about the cookware and ingredients for braising, I love the tips on the shopping for the ingredients, and she payed good attention to ingredients freshness, natural and organic ..., I tried a few recipes, though they are not too much to my taste, but this is an individual thing, the more important cooking techniques are well conveyed. And I decided to buy a le Creuset dutch oven.
One concern I have and I decide not to buy the book, besides my taste is that I think Americans use too much oven to cook, though convenient, it is not energy efficient. I perfer to cook on the stove as much as possible except baking. Just voice my concern as we are fighting global warming. I end up not daring to cook the 7 hour lamb.
Your home will smell like a 5 star restaurant!!!.......2007-09-10
This book is incredible and the results are even better. After buying this book I braise several times a week with incredible results. I love the way the book is laid out and the recipes are easily explained and a real pleasure to make and the enjoy.
Your home will smell like a 5 star restaurant when you prepare these recipes and you will enjoy yourself as well.
deserves 5 stars........2007-07-25
It's hard to believe any book, whether it's a cookbook or any other type of book, receives 5 star reviews from everyone who reviews it. The reason that I gave it 5 stars is it is as much of a tutorial as it is a cookbook. Each and every aspect of braising is explained so well that you can accomplish the recipes with confidence and feel free to go above and beyond them.
I thought that braising was a technique to make a tough, otherwise useless cut of meat tender. How wrong I was. The book explains that there are two methods, Short Braising for ingredients such as: Radishes, Belgium Endive, Haddock, Tuna or Scallops and Long Braising for Beef, Pork, etc.
The equipment section is also excellent. Instead of telling you that a particular item is necessary, the author explains the many types of skillets and dutch ovens that would be adequate for braising. Not one pot or skillet will accomplish all types of braising and any cook with a well stocked kitchen may already have the equipment necessary for success.
I almost forgot to mention that almost every major ingredient has a sidebar in the book that explains what the item is, how to tell if it's fresh, how to store it, and so on. Belgium Endive is a great example as well as Habibut, Maple Syrup, Fennel, Artichokes, and the list goes on.
Once again, I will say that this is a fine addition to my cooking library, it will help me to increase my skill as a cook, and I want to thank Molly Stevens for it.
One of the most useful books in my kitchen.......2007-07-16
The best testament to this book is that it's splattered with stains from use throughout. In the winter, I pull it out regularly as it's the definitive work on this subject, written in a clear, approachable way. I recommend it for any home cook. If you don't have a quality dutch oven, treat yourself and get a good one. The combination of this book and a high-quality dutch oven will reward you for years. I bought my first Le Creuset dutch oven for $140 about a decade ago; it was more than the entire set of cookware I owned at the time. I've tossed that cookware, but I still cook at least twice a week in my dutch oven. (In winter, I braise at least three meals a week; we eat the leftovers for lunch and dinners on other days.) You'll sometimes find Le Creuset on sale or promoted with special deals here on Amazon.
Molly Stevens Knows Her Stuff!.......2007-05-07
It's not for nuthin' that Molly Stevens is a regular contributor to Taunton's magazine FINE COOKING. She knows her stuff. In the book, ALL ABOUT BRAISING, Stevens incorporates delicious recipes with the all-important science of successful braising. She explains the WHYs of various techniques and the end product is delicious. Suggestions are made for substitions - both cooking vessels and recipe ingredients. Hard to argue with success. Most of the recipes are do-able for the average cook so a high-skill level is not required. The ingredient combinations make this book very appealing to professionals as well as "Suzy Homemaker". I have already bought several copies for gifts.

The BEST!.......2007-09-06
I am a native Louisianian and believe this is, by far, the best cookbook available. It is beautifully written and illustrated.
A treasure!.......2007-09-02
Someone gave us this book as a gift about 10 years ago and we use it for every holiday as it reminds us of our southern roots and holidays at my grandmother's. If you are a southern cook or love southern cooking, you can't go wrong with this one. I am living out of the country for a year and this is the one cookbook I want to have with me. The desserts are especially scrumptious!
Honest ingredients and excellent results.......2007-07-21
My husband and I bought this book in the French Quarter on our honeymoon in 1976, and in spite of the care I've taken to protect it, it is now in tatters from all the use. Every recipe I've tried is wonderful, and many are standard fare now. For example, the Dutch Baby is a Sunday morning favorite, and Lemon Loves always get gobbled up first when taken to a summer party.
The amazing ladies and gentlemen who submitted the recipes use real ingredients for authentic results, and I'm thankful for the chance to get a new copy of this Southern classic.
Delicious!.......2005-11-23
I have gone through 3 copies of this cookbook. All the recipes are given by folks that have cooked them in their own homes. Darlin's you cannot go wrong. Try the artichoke hearts! Yum! Yum!
First you get THE JOY OF COOKING, then...........2005-01-16
....you MUST have COTTON COUNTRY COLLECTIONS in your kitchen! These are the two most used cookbooks in my library. I have never had a recipe fail me lo these many years. I have given this as gifts for years as I'm getting ready to do right now through Amazon. Of course there are many "Southern" recipes in this wonderful cookbook, but I turn to it for all occasions. Many of the recipes offer suggestions for putting together a menu, which we can all appreciate! You'll find good basic recipes as well as special ones. And they are all so-o-o GOOD!

The recipes vary from quick and easy meals to cook for the kids on weeknights to gourmet recipes that will impress even the most finiky dinner guest. It also features menus for events ranging from the ballgame "Tailgate party" to a "Ladies Spring Luncheon". This cookbook and it's still published predecessor Cotton Country Cooking are a must have for the cook that appreciates the best in Southern flavors.

Ingrid.......2007-04-29
I grew up with this cookbook. My mother made recipes from it for special occasions, and now I do too. Among my favorites are the cheesecake and the banana nut bread. I think every lady in Morgan County uses the sausage ball recipe, too. The recipes in this book set the standard by which all these Southern classics are judged. Pick it up, if for no other reason than the vintage 1970s photographs of Decatur, AL, society ladies!
Southern Cooking to Thrill Your Family and Friends.......2002-02-22
I received this cookbook as a wedding shower present. With the exception of the bath towels I also received, it is the shower present I have used the most in almost thirteen years of marriage.
While some of the recipes are traditional Southern cooking such as fried chicken and biscuits, that is by no means the extent of Cotton Country Cooking. The recipes reflect the diversity of cultures that make up America, and in paricular, the South. There is everything from Creole to German cuisine in Cotton Country Cooking. My personal favorites include Sweet and Sour Meatloaf, Banana Nut Bread, and Boiled Custard.
Are you tired of cooking the same thing over and over for your guests? Cotton Country Cooking is an excellent resource for when you entertain. If cooking is not what you enjoy, there are several easy and foolproof recipes for those times when you just can't get out of having to make something.
In this age of convenience and fast foods, why not treat yourself and your family and friends? Try the recipes in Cotton Country Cooking! They will taste the love.
One of the Best Regional Cookbooks Ever.......2001-12-20
Recipes are totally reliable and there's an amazing variety. All were tested before being accepted for inclusion. Written before concerns about sugar and fat really hit but baked goods recipes can be easily adjusted by reducing sugar or fat by one quarter to one third. Have been using this cookbook for more than twenty years and was delighted to find it still available.
This cookbook will be the prize in your WILL........1999-03-22
I have bought and given this book away so many times that I have lost count. I lived in the south for only a few short years and came to love the people and their great foods. So when I moved west, I insisted on this book riding in the car with me. Every recipe in it can be trusted to be the hit of whatever the occasion might be. I don't plan any special meal without it.
Great! Southern Recipes.......1998-10-21
I bought the book when it first came out when I lived in TN, my Mom loved it so much she borrowed it and never returned it. Now, after several cross country moves I find it at Amazon! Great collection, of some hard to find recipes, that you'll remember as a child.

It was in such good shape also. This is something that I will keep forever. Thank you so much

I received this cookbook as a wedding present from mom 20 years ago and I have used it so much the cover and some pages are lost!!!!...This cookbook is the best I have ever seen for good home or southern cooking. It has cornbread dressing for Thanksgiving Dinner just like my mom used to make and Turkey Gravy and Chicken & Dumplings just like my dear friend Pat taught me to make!It also has recipes that have been passed on by friends and family- Shirley in Florida and Aunt Sara in Arkansas passed on the same Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake-go figure-it's in there too! It also has some recipes I have never seen but use religiously now- like Monkey Bread and Peanut Brittle. This cookbook has everything and more-and I use no other!

If you just want ideas..........2001-09-01
If you want to get ideas on what type of window treatments are available or what style you like the best, etc, this book is a great resource for you. Pictures are great, too. (This book does not give any instructions on how to make them.) I totally lack creativity but this book really helped me get ideas of what I'd like to make for my brand new house with extra large windows.
Good general info, some good designs, no instructions.......2000-01-08
Good information on types of windows and styles of window treatments, hardware, trims. Each page has sharp color pictures. Some current styles, but some seem slightly dated. Instructions are not provided.

Book Description
In the Fall of 1992, Millennium Approaches, the first part of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, won England's prestigious Evening Standard award as the season's Best Play. By the Spring of 1993, Millennium had come to Broadway and won its highest honor, the Tony Award for Best Play, and the distinguished Pulitzer Prize for drama as well. Through its epic theatrical panorama of the intimate and political dynamics that arise when individuals, histories, and cultures intersect, Millennium captured the imagination and the conscience of all who saw it. Its ability to deeply move the audience in personal, communal, and political ways was admirably (and astoundingly) matched by the subsequent production of the play's second part, Perestroika, which brought Kushner yet another Evening Standard award and Tony Award for Best Play (1994). Tony Kushner has, almost overnight, become the premier American male playwright to "represent" the 1990s, as David Mamet and August Wilson dominated critical attention in the 1980s.
The phenomenally positive response to Angels in America was matched by the equally enthusiastic reception of its young, politically engaged playwright, who impressed journalists and scholars with his eloquent intellect, wit, and moral convictions. Kushner spoke for a younger generation of American artists and activists whose art is intimately connected to social vision and "revolutionary" possibilities in the public and private sectors. His role as a generational (read "national," "liberal," "socialist," "Jewish," "queer") spokesman has provided him with a public platform from which to address concerns that lie at the center of national debate. In a short time Kushner has captured and retained a nation's fascination, and his opinions are widely sought out on a wide range of topics. And, most often, the platform from which Kushner expresses his ideas is the personal interview, in which he boldly confronts Americans to rethink, even to reinvent, themselves as the Millennium approaches.
Tony Kushner in Conversation is the first book to compile Kushner's most significant interviews of the past decade, tracing his career from its early years to his maturing artistic and political visions. The collection includes pieces that first appeared in an amazingly broad range of periodicals as well as interviews not previously published, such as his appearance on PBS on The Charlie Rose Show.
In addition to Angels in America, Tony Kushner is author of Slavs! and is currently finishing work on Henry Box Brown, scheduled to have its world premiere at the Royal National Theatre in the summer of 1997. Robert Vorlicky is Associate Professor of Drama at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University.
Customer Reviews:
Very thoughtful, many ideas shared by a great author.......2005-03-22
Actually I bought this book for strictly "scholar" reasons. It was the right one to buy, brought me a few thoughts, also, revealed many of the issues related to Tony Kushner and his works. What I find amazing in this book, however, is it's charm, wit, sometimes irony. And, therefore, in addition to "scholar" reasons I got also a great book full of real great, funny, moving and grand... talking... :-))) I'd really like to recomend it not only to people doing research in gay/queer/theater and performance in general topics, but also to those, who're seeking confessions of a lively and exploring mind.
Playwrights make for good dialogue. Who knew?.......2003-12-27
I want to recommend a book I just read, Tony Kushner In Conversation, to those who liked Angels In America or just like reading the spoken thoughts of an eloquent, witty gay playwright. The book was first published about five years ago so some of the references are dated, but that doesn't matter (much) when we're talking about convictions. Which is what a lot of this book is about, being a selection of interviews in which Kushner speaks his mind with sometimes frightening--both to the reader and the playwright, in retrospect--candor.
