Book Description

Ashley Warlick's critically acclaimed second novel, THE SUMMER AFTER JUNE, weaves a spellbinding tale of family and flight over the course of one feverish southern summer. Lindy Jain, a young, pragmatic, willful woman, is about to be married when her beloved sister June is mysteriously murdered. Lindy Jain then makes a desperate decision, fleeing her hometown of Charlotte -- her job, her fiance, her shattered family. She lights out for the heat of the Texas coast with the one thing that still ties her to her sister: June's baby son. Suspenseful and sensuous, utterly compelling, THE SUMMER AFTER JUNE surpasses the enormous promise of Warlick's prizewinning first novel. "Ashley Warlick is wise beyond her years and gifted by a graceful insight not only into humanity's fears and foibles but also into its capacity to evolve, to be redeemed" (Oxford American).

1 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2001-01-04

I had read that this author was up there with the South's most up and coming writers, but I genuinely felt that her style seemed more like a college freshman than a seasoned novelist. While there are many beautiful images and the language is smooth, the characters seemed too superficial, I didn't get involved with them as with some of my other favorite books. I would read an excerpt of this or a chapter first before making it a choice selection.

5 out of 5 stars five stars.......2000-09-04

I was deeply moved by this book, and I am astonished to find that it was only given an average of 4.5 stars. It is a fascinating story about a woman leaning over the cliffs off insanity, yet never stepping over. I thought it was written extremely well and I look forward to future works by Ms. Warlick.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamlike Quality.......2000-07-18

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was swept up in the poetic, dreamlike voice that this book has. Once you get into the language of the book, you don't want to put it down. It was suspenseful, vivid and well written. The author really "shows" the characters instead of simply "telling" the reader. There is no doubt that each reader will interpret the book differently and have their own visions of each character and what drives them.

1 out of 5 stars Wish I Hadn't Bought It!.......2000-05-28

The book jacket says it all, a car and old fashioned porch out of focus, blurry and hard to look at for any length of time. This novel is the same way, out of focus. It sounded like it would be an interesting read. Murder. A Stolen baby. Hiding out in lush, humid Galveston. The character never came to life--Lottie, Lettie? See, I can't even remember her name. There's some pretty writing here, but I couldn't enjoy the book for the distance. Also I had trouble understanding why Lettie would perform an autopsy on her own sister. It seemed cold and gruesome. Next I couldn't understand why Lettie took her sister's baby and left town, making her escape seem like an abduction. It didn't ring true and I felt even more distanced from Lettie because I couldn't understand how her mind worked.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2000-05-22

This is beautiful literary fiction. Reminded me of Sylvia Plath, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, good road novels and old Paul Newman movies. Here Warlick chooses to focus on darker, more complex emotions and situations than in THE DISTANCE FROM THE HEART OF THINGS and I, for one, think it makes for a more engaging read.

Imagine two brothers off on an intergalatic Spring Break. When their friends leave them behind on Earth, they've got a few millenia to kill before they'll manage to get back to school. So, as an experiment, mind you, they decide to give evolution a bit of a nudge... And that's when all hell breaks loose... a little more literally than either of them planned...

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing, original fable.......2005-08-14

This is a strikingly original fantasy novel about fascism and foolishness. Humans, it postulates, are a species condemned to struggle against the pain of having "a mind capable of conceiving eternity trapped inside a body that dies." Two energy beings, blind drunk after over-indulging (in what?) at a graduation party on a series of backwater worlds, miss the bus home. Facing the prospect of eternal boredom, they begin to tinker with the mental capacities of a few unlucky apes, and presto, "Christ, Beethoven, Auschwitz, thumbscrews and philosophy, Magna Carta and White Supremacy, poetry, poison gas, nuclear fission and romantic love" are born. Fast-forward to present day, and the two decide to intervene to prevent the marriage of Charity Stovall, an intelligent but unthinking religious hanger-on, and Roy Strider, a small-minded, vicious proto-fascist. But they do it by show-and-tell, convincing Charity and Roy that they're dead and letting them roam through Heaven and Hell to find wisdom--or damnation (it's your choice, after all). Highly entertaining, packed with original, witty, novel conceptions and ideas. (About the only book I can think of that resembles it to a degree: Robert A. Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land." Four stars instead of five only because the characterization is limited in depth.

          ....

Waiting for the Galactic bus begins at the begining...of the human race that is. Some aliens who can exist in solid form or in energy are taking a trip around the universe, tripping all the way since they're young and want to try the latest and greatest in sensory experience through thier equivilant of drugs and extreme sports. They happen upon a planet where they spend some time drinking in the rich atmosphere and experiencing various solid forms, getting drunk on the sensations. When they're ready to leave, two brothers in thier number who are considered trouble makers and losers are too drunk and get left behind. The others decide they'll come back for them in an aeon or two, serves them right for being drunk jerks, right?

Barion and Coyul wake to find themselves alone, with nothing but the primitive life of Earth to keep them company. Since they're so bored, one decides to give self-awareness to a monkey and start a human species. His brother warns him against this, as there are serious laws against elevating species before they are prepared for it, the disasters resulting from such irresponsible advancement of a species are terrible and the punishments severe. But, since the deed's been done, might as well improve on the design, right? figures the other brother.

And so, it is the begining of all the creativity, sadness, hope, destruction, love, hate, art, and violence. Barion and Coyul soon discover that this new species just keeps going on after they die in the form of consious energy. Not quite sure what to do with them, they decide to throw them a party, and "Upstairs" and "Downstairs" develop, and religions on earth develop and influence the way the realms develop.

So, after witnessing human history, and all the violence it can produce, as well as recognising the potential, they decide to intervene to stop what could very well be the next Hitler, before he is even conceived. And here is where our human charachters enter. Charity and Roy...Roy the Nazi wanna-be, and Charity, who has great potential, but doesn't know much of anything outside what she learned in a podunk little town; poverty, the local tabernacle church, and McDonalds.

Coyul and Barion take them on a ride through downstairs they can never forget, giving them both thier individual dreams to wake the sleeping genious in Charity, and to show her the monster the Roy can become. Charachters throughout history are also working in the realms of upstairs and downstairs and add a lot to the story. All told in witty, thoughtfull, and downright funny prose. A very enjoyable read.

This book is about a bus driven by a man named Mack. He was driving children around and people on the street where yelling at Mack. They were telling him to watch out and Mack did. What was down there? It was a dog that kept barking at everyone. Mack tried to catch it but just kept barking. People on the street were getting mad at the dog and were looking for the owner. A man was in the bakery shop asking if they seen something for him. Read the book to find out if he found it.
I liked the book because of the surprise ending and the pictures. Katie V.

          5 out of 5 stars Strange looks.......2000-06-24

I loved it. It was such a new look at classic evolution that I couldnt help but love it. The descriptions of Heavon and Hell, or Topside and Below Stairs, were so funny and imaginative that I fell instantly in love with the places. While I was reading it I tryed, on numerous ocassions, to describe the book to my friends and teachers who rewarded my efforts to enlighten with very strange looks. In fact the only person who didnt give me a very strange look was my best friend who instantly wanted to read it. We both enjoyed it alot and think others will too.

                    Book Description

The Gunwitch, silent and deadly bodyguard to the misfit family of monstrous heroes known as the Nocturnals, breaks away in his first solo adventure! When the pistol-packing Gunwitch and his young charge, Evening Horror, find themselves in a small town ravaged by undead outlaws and true Hell's Angels -- motorcycle ridin' vampires -- The Gunwitch takes it upon himself to bring down both groups before any more innocents can be hurt. But as the undead protector embroils himself in the conflict, what once seemed to be an old fashioned turf war is revealed to be something much more sinister. Writer Dan Brereton (Nocturnals, Giantkiller) and artist Ted Naifeh (Gloomcookie) mix the American Spaghetti Western and drive-in horror with a hard-boiled sense of gallows humor. You'll never leave your night-light off again.

I love this cookbook. My family was on vacation and a woman we were traveling with had been working her way through the book. She recommended it so I thought I'd give it a try. I have so many cookbooks at home that look great in the store but once you try to cook or bake with them, they really aren't that good. This is not a book that will be moved to storage any time soon. I liked it so much, I've been buying copies for everyone I know that uses a crockpot. I also like the fact that I can omit items from a recipe if I don't eat them - you can't do that with baking. The index is very well organized so if you know either the main ingredient you'd like to use or the name of the dish, you can find what you're looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Fix it and Forget it? I say , "Just Forget it!".......2007-08-05

I just recently purchased "Fix-it and Forget-it Cookbook, Feasting with your Slow Cooker." It is a National #1 New York Times bestseller, so I thought I would have a great book to read while traveling and to cook from at home.

I like cookbooks with pictures; this book has no pictures. I like cookbooks with comments, stories, or history of the recipes; this book has no comments, stories, or history on any of the recipes. I like cookbooks with new and innovative dishes; this book has nothing new or innovative.

If you like cookbooks with a laundry-list of recipes, many just slightly changed from the one next to it, then this book may be for you. If you like community cookbooks, where the recipes are only tested by the contributor, a person you most likely don't know personally, and therefore don't know anything about that person's cooking skills or personal taste, then this book may be for you.

I ask you, what are you going to do with seven similar but slightly different recipes for pea soup? How about 20+ recipes for beef stew? Or an equal amount of recipes for Swiss steak?

This cookbook has over 800 recipes, but they are nothing special; just recipes that are available in every community cookbook or on-line recipe web site. I couldn't actually find one main dish recipe that I would want to serve company, nor was there anything new that "blew me away." Actually, I have never seen a larger collection of b-o-r-i-n-g food anywhere else in my life!

On the upside, there is a small chapter on vegetables (which includes rice dishes (I thought rice was a grain, not a vegetable!) and some stuffing recipes (also not a vegetable). While the recipes in this section are nothing innovative or new, there are some helpful ones, like Caramelized Onions, which I have made; the slow cooker makes them easy so they can be used in other recipes. There are several other good recipes that I have tried, like one for acorn squash and a couple of good cabbage recipes. I found it interesting that there was a recipe for "Extra Good Mashed Potatoes," which had been contributed by five different ladies. The instructions tell you how to cook them, but forget to tell you to mash them before serving!

All said, this is a book of very pedestrian recipes that have been poorly edited. If you are into "meat and potatoes" or like to cook food with no imagination, you may want to pick up this book. Since so many copies have already been sold, chances are you were fooled by the cute cover as I was and already own a copy. If you own it, all is not lost--you can prepare seven similar, but just slightly different kinds of pea soup this week!

                      5 out of 5 stars Love this!.......2007-07-06

I love my crockpot and this book is part of the reason why. I could throw all the ingredients in, leave for work or school, and come home to a wonderful smelling house and dinner was done! Our favorite recipes from here were Taco Soup and Chicken Tortilla Soup. Very good, especially on a cold winter day.

                        Book Description

More than 100 years ago, best friends William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson made history when they created the first "motorized bicycle" and founded the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. But there's another story. Over the century, the Harley and Davidson families grew up together, celebrating their company's milestones with road trips, hunting and fishing sallies—and lots and lots of eating.

In HARLEY AND DAVIDSON FAMILY RECIPES, the founders' grandchildren Margo Manning and Carol Lange present 100 family recipes tailor-made for home gatherings and roadside picnics, including Gilroy 40-Clove Garlic Chicken, Endurance Run Spinach Pasta Salad, and Grandma Harley's Peach Cobbler. Packed with rare archival photographs and anecdotes about the families and their motorcycles.

                        5 out of 5 stars Better than a cookbook--.......2007-02-20

This book is much more than a cookbook! It evokes the feel of a walk down a tree-lined street of yesteryear. Filled with sepia toned images and intriguing narrative, it is a book to savor. It reads like a personal glimpse into the lives of the Harley and Davidson families and chronicles the lifelong friendship of William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson.

The book emphasizes the fact that Harley Davidson Motor Company was indeed a family affair, only twice as good with two families of friends. Images of family always include food and the Harley's and Davidson's are no different. Two granddaughters, one of Harley (Margo Manning) and one of Davidson (Carol Lange), compiled this collection.

With categories such as "Kick Starters," "On the Course and On the Trail," and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mixology," the volume contains recipes for all types of food. Manning and her cousin John Harley traced Harley family ancestry to Littleport, England and farther back to Bavaria. Bavarian recipes handed down through the family dot the pages as well as a number of Carol and Margo's moms' recipes that reek of 50's cocktail parties and dinner parties.

With recipes such as Curried Artichoke Rice Salad, Comfort Casserole and After-the-Ride Punch, there is something here to please every palate. On a personal note, I had sworn off cookbooks as my collection had taken over my home. I had to break my rule and get this one as much for the feel and the story as for the fabulous food!

I bought this for my husband, being a Harley fan, he loved all the old facts and actual pictures of the Harley and Davidson Families. It makes for a good history lesson. The recipes are pretty good too, but if your someone who needs pictures. There aren't any pictures of the recipes.

This book gets you excited about cooking again! It has great recipies in several catagories such as "Kick Starters: Treats to grease your bearings and get your motors running" and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mixology: Specialty drinks and beverages with a splash of history". All of it revolving around family was great and with summertime right around the corner, cookouts are too! The book even included the family trees of the Harley and the Davidson families. It was an inspiration to gather the family and make our own family history cookbook; that way we never forget where that awesome Banana Pudding came from or how to make grandma's famous Thanksgiving stuffing.

The graphic design of this book is fantastic! The schematics of Harley parts, as well as photos of the Harleys and Davidsons make this book a must have for lovers of good design, good food and good stories. I'm happy to see the women of these families
honored. A must have for any cookbook collection!

5 out of 5 stars "Harley and Davidson Family Recipes" Hit the Spot!.......2005-01-20

As a native Milwaukeean I am always keen for hometown news, and got a real kick out of all the national coverage awarded the Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary festivities; some kind soul even sent me a copy of "Harley and Davidson Family Recipes." Sadly, I let this palatable little gem of a book sit on the shelf far too long before I gave it a serious look.

Inside "Harley and Davidson Family Recipes" I found -- well, just what the cover promises -- a trove of personal family photos and memories, plus dozens and dozens of genuine family recipes -- some twists on familiar dishes and some a bit more on the exotic side (like the watermelon salad with feta cheese -- sounds funny but tastes great!). My favorite, so far, is the roasted red bell pepper soup.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in real family cooking, and for any Harley-Davidson devotee or motorcycle enthusiast, for its personal glimpse into the day-to-day life of its founding families. Like some of the recipies inside, food and motorcycles may sound like an unusual combination -- but trust me, it works!

4 out of 5 stars Look through my window.......2004-07-28

If you've got a nice, sunshiny yard, why not gussy it up a little with one of the contemporary curtain ensembles that decorators now call, window treatments? I found Creative Publishing's guide to be insightful and a true resource, it's good even with the basement windows that my X put inwhile trying to give a basement woodshop some natural light, but on the other hand nosy neighbors mean that you have to have some cloth over the glass.

Whether your view overlooks a garden in the country, or St. Patrick;s Cathedral in the city, you'll want a book like this here "More Creative Window Treatments" so you can look at the color photos and decide for yourself, and for your family, which setting would look nicest. And then the book gives you complete instructions for how to sew it together yourself. Or perhaps you can enlist the assistance of the birds and mice Disney's Cinderella used to help her whip together her gown!

2 out of 5 stars Only if you can sew..........2002-07-01

While this book does have a few pictures, they seem quite old. The one or two items I liked didn't have any instructions for. If you are not a sewer, than this book is not for you. I found the book very confusing - definitely written for the person with sewing background. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas, directs you to a professional window treatment.......2001-02-05

This was one of three books I purchased on window treatments; I turn to this one for advice and direction. Step by step directions with pictures on such topics as installing hardware, including hanging a mounting board, to the basics of sewing. Great ideas for rod pocket curtains and custom shades. I used it to create two different window treatments, scarf swag and shoji-style screen. Each project tells you how to measure and materials required. Due to the great instructions, both treatments turned out very professional!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, great visuals.......2000-12-25

I saw this book at a friend's house. It is loaded with good photos and lots of detailed instructions for making a wide variety of window treatments. The styles illustrated aren't "far out" or strange, but not too staid either. I really liked this book, enough to make a note of it to buy or borrow once I got home. I now see from Amazon.com that a newer edition (Oct. 2000) has been published, so I'm definitely going to buy the newer one. I recommend this book and therefore also the as-yet-unseen newer edition.

                                            Book Description

This fabulous book graphically maps the evolution of American and European microbrewery labels, logos, and pub signs concentrating on their homegrown style of self promotion and artwork.

It documents a rare occasion when traditional graphic design (as employed by the giant breweries) is challenged with such boldness it has no option but to succumb.

Spencer Drate is a creative director and designer who has been honored with many awards. He was commissioned by the Chelsea Brewing Company to create the packaging for Sunset Red Ale and Blond Ale.

Thomas Olejar studied brewing at UCLA and has created a beer information software application for training and promotional use.

This is the best book on beer labels ever written. If you like beer and would like to view an amazing collection of beer labels this is the only book for you. I am not sure how many beer labels are in this book, it must be several hundred, all in color. I got a copy of this a while back and I keep it on my coffee table. Everybody picks it up and loves it. It never gets old.

Amazingly various labels of distinction. Makes me wanna travel around and try them all.

Labels of Distinction was a well-thought, brilliantly designed look into the art behind great beers. It provides amusing and though-provoking commentaries on the styles and types of beers unique to each region explored. More than just admiring great labels for their actual art, the book looks at why each label works to promote and sell each beer. A must read, as much for the knowledge you will gain on beer and its marketing as for the lables themselves.
