Book Description
Written by Liu E, an intellectual born at the end of the Qing Dynasty. By describing what Lao Can sees and hears in his travels, the author fiercely attacks the injustices he witnessed and exposed the hypocrisy of so-called "honest and upright officials." Intriguing novel, and one of the last books to be written in the "old style" of Chinese narrative.

hazardous travels.......2004-06-23
China has had few relations with Spain excepting for the Catholic priests, as Spanish Church has reached the whole world. This book remembers to me the stile of storytelling that can be found in Thousand and One Nights: an Oriental stile that seems infantile if you're accustomed to Occident novels from Sweden to Italy.
The adventures of the Dr. Can, so named as he's a wise and good man even cultivated in the Confucian philosophy and other humanities, has however only a precarious formation in medicine, Chinese or occidental. He travels here and there as an ambulant physician and many times he succeeds as, if no real medicines, he's plenty of common sense. The novel reveals the disastrous and demoralized state of China at the beginning of twentieth century and his terrible governmental corruption, deplorable state of the roads, river floods, attacks of tigers and wolfs in the country, selling of women as slaves, pirates, and many other catastrophes, and how the doctor must act sometimes as a detective in a case of murder by poisoned cakes, and it's curious, as it's named Sherlock Holmes as an example to follow, a proof that even in the China of these times this hero was yet translated and known. Also the doctor posses a wristwatch, an object I think no very common by 1903 between Chinese people.

Interesting & insightful look at late Qing dynasty China!.......2000-11-12
'The Travels of Lao Can' or 'Lao Can Youji' was written by Liu E (1857-1909) between 1904-07 during the late Qing era. This current edition was published by Chinese Literature (Panda Books, Beijing) in 1983, and was translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang. This partly autobiographical and allegorical work presents numerous colorful insights into the society of the closing years of the Manchu or late Qing dynasty China. This was a society where corruption among Chinese officials was rampant. During his travels, Liu E or Lao Can writes about the injustice and evils that these officials bring upon the people, and also presents his keen observations of Chinese society in general. This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in China or Chinese literature. The only gripe that I have with this edition is its poor translation, and also the omission of several chapters from the original Chinese text.

Slow down! This is good stuff!.......2003-04-25
If you're going to read this book you have got to slow down and savor the excellent writing of Lynn Abbey. If you're looking for a book you can burn through in a night, this is not it. Abbey is the queen of weird. Her stories are dark and magical and marvelous and will take you away if you read patiently.
I also recommend her new novel "Sanctuary," as well as some of her books in the Dark Sun series.
What was this book about??????.......2001-05-02
I have read this book so many times and every time I shake my head and wonder where it is going and what is it about??? Even the title makes no sense, what was her gift??? Her name to the zulkir at the end??? what was that about??? that horse she wanted to give to Elminster??? Why would a 600+year old sorceress give a 1150+year old wizard a stupid horse for his birthday??? The bottom line is that the book makes no sense whatsoever. Why did she dream up some plot about red wizards when it doesn't go anywhere???
Another Lynn Abbey book that makes no sense, but at least it wasn't as bad as that stupid pitiful attempt to write about Hamanu of Urik
An overall good book but with a few problems........1999-04-12
The book was very good. I especially liked the fact that a book finally went inside the personality of the Simbul, one of my favorite characters. Really the only dissapointing part of the book was that the ending wasn't much of an ending. It left a lot of unanswered questions.
A great book.......1998-10-20
When I bought this book I assumed it would be terrible, but I found out that I rather liked it. I probably am biased but I thought the book was a very interesting book for a couple of reasons. First it offers the first and only look at the Simbul in a novel. Her personality as depicted certainly was nothing near what I imagined! She was portrayed as much more..human than I had thought her to be. The second factor is the interesting plot involving the Yuir elves and their gods. It is a very excellent book indeed.
another book that noone needs..........1998-09-25
Mmh...I really do not like these all powerful invincible characters like Elminster, the Seven Sisters and the Simbul, being one of them. It is just too easy for them to destroy hordes of powerful "evil" enemies with a mere thought. The story about these half-elves was quite interesting, but not captivating and I somehow felt, there was some kind of solution missing at the end. If you don't collect the FR books, you can skip this one.

As fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation know, Q is the omnipotent extradimensional entity who so often causes whimsical havoc on the Starship Enterprise and elsewhere--for example, by helpfully introducing Captain Picard and his crew to the menacing Borg collective. Now this petulant demigod's first-person story is told by John de Lancie, the actor who plays Q, and Peter David, author of successful Star Trek novels. It's an irreverent romp through one bizarre scenario after another, as not only Star Trek's Federation universe but the entire multiverse of alternative timelines looks set to gurgle down a metaphysical plughole. Q's own wife and son vanish into the maelstrom, and his "Q Continuum" colleagues blither about calmly accepting apocalypse as a change from eternal tedium. Only Picard and Data the android accompany the questing Q, whose monstrous egotism and complaints that Picard never genuflects to him are barely affected when he loses his godlike powers and realizes that he may need mere humans. En route to the end of all things, they encounter other Federation characters, including Romulans, Klingons, Ferengi, and our captain's dread cyborg alter-ego, Locutus of Borg. After a fast-moving sequence of fights, wisecracks, insults, old jokes, and ultimate despair, the fate of the multiverse is ... but that would be telling. Frothy entertainment. --David Langford
Book Description
The enigmatic entity known as Q remains one of the great mysteries in the universe. Now actor John de Lancie, who has played Q on television for more than a decade, joins Peter David, the bestselling author of such acclained novels as Q-in-Law and Q-Squared, to send Q on an unforgettable cosmic odyssey told from the mischievous trickster's unique point of view.
The Maelstrom, a metaphysical whirlpool of apocalyptic proportions, is pulling all of reality into its maw, devouring time and space while bringing together people and places from throughout the universe. The Q Continuum pronounces that the end of everything has come, but Q refuses to meekly accept the end of all he has known. Defying the judgement of the Continuum, he sets out to derail doomsday -- whatever the cost.
Q has been everywhere and done everything, but now he's in for a cosmic thrill ride beyond even his own astonishingly unlimited imagination. Reluctantly assisted by Captain Jean-Luc Picard, can even Q prevent the Universe As We Know It from going literally down the drain? I, Q is a wild and witty voyage through the secret soul of creation -- as only Q can tell it!
Download Description
It was our universe's darkest hour. Spanning time and space, threatening the existence of all that ever was and all that ever could be, the over-cosmic being stood poised to destroy reality itself. All that stood between it and the ultimate catastrophe were Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise -- and, of course, Q. In the tradition of Q-in-Law and Q-Squared, here is a memoir of Q's efforts to save the multiverse. John De Lancie, the actor who portrays Q on Star Trek: The Next Generation, joins forces with Peter David, the bestselling cocreator of Star Trek: The New Frontier, to conjure in I, Q a totally unique and engaging world view, enlivened by character insight that only De Lancie could provide. This brilliantly realized novel is a stunning exploration of the nature of reality itself.
Customer Reviews:
Q: The best ever. .......2007-05-31
Q is both the straight line and the punchline of this book. It's one of those books that you keep around for when you're going off the deep end; it refreshes your sense of humor and your imagination.
Q at His Omnipotent Best!!!.......2007-04-16
As those of us who know and love (and sometimes, love to hate) the maddening Q already are aware, the genius behind this incredible character is the equally amazing actor John De Lancie and now he has graced us with his thoughts as an author writing for his most famous and fabulous creation. For those who must had been in a coma during the Star Trek Next Generation's run, Q is an alien species from which all of his kind are referred to as "Q" who have the powers of what any of us would consider to be a god and yet somehow our dear Jean-Luc Picard manages to treate him as if he were some lowly mosquito! Anyway, for me, Q has always been hands down the best and most creative character ever conceived on the Next Generation. Unplug Data and throw him in the toy chest; give me Q and his madness anyday!
In this book, our dear Q must somehow (with the help of his sometimes friend, sometimes dire enemy Picard) save the universe from destruction in a way that only an incredibly funny, witty, and ultimately soulful being like Q can. I don't want to give more away; this is truly a book that you must read with all of its twists and turns to fully enjoy. Buy this book tonight people!!! You won't be sorry!
Very Funny.......2007-04-07
You have got to love this book if your a star trek fan! Q is the greatest. The book came in on time and in wonderful condition.
This book is really FUN.......2006-04-29
I had so much fun reading this book that I felt like sharing it. If you want to have fun, read a fast paced book, with great action, buy this and enjoy. Of course this is not a Novell Prize thing, is just Star Trek. Q was perfectly brought to life, so don't let the other reviews prevent from reading this great story.
A Really Hard To Put Down Book! One Of My Trek Favs!.......2005-08-17
It being written by Q, John De Lancie himself makes this book essential to all Q fans. Who better to tell a story about Q than Q himself? And in the novel, the character Q tells the story, he gives flash backs of his past in this book. He says things like he is the one who first gave fire to man. This book is really great; some may not like it being that the only main characters in the novel are Q, Picard, and Data. If you are a fan of all or either of the 3, then get this book, it's really hard to put down!

Q (and John De Lancie) transcends a bad story.......2007-05-27
God becomes bored and decides that she will end the multiverse. Q sets out to rescue everything, and finds himself repeatedly bumping into Picard and Data. The storyline is confused and confusing, and the characters are pitiable caricatures of themselves.
After this outpouring of scorn let me say that somehow the authors succeeded in keeping me listening. There are two things that makes this audiobook worth listening to, and that is Q and John De Lancie himself. Peter David (one of the authors) and John De Lancie (author and reader) succeed in producing a Q at his quirky best. Therefore, if you want a good story don't stop here, but if you love Q then this book is one you should check out. [Q-Squared is much better.]
Also, I must say that I love listening to John De Lancie's voice. He does a masterful job with this audiobook. Overall, I give this audiobook a guarded recommendation.
Great Book on Tape.......2007-05-19
Having John DeLancie, "Q", narrate this book on tape really brings the story to life. Anyone who has read the book should definitely get this CD and listen to it. It is one of the more enjoyable books on tape I have listened to.
Great, except for the beginning and the ending.......2004-07-19
All in all, this is the one audiobook one should acquire if one is a fan of Q. Written by the actor who plays him, you need never worry that he will act out of character. The way that Q's journey goes is an intriguing philosophical journey. The problem is that the begging secion and the next section is done by someone else, and it justs drags the overall stry down, to the point where it seems it hardly has an ending at all.
For the record, the story takes place after the episode of ST: Voyager where Q and another have a baby.
FUNNY, STRANGE, ENGAGING AND WIERD.......2004-07-14
I am reviewing the audio cassette version. John de Lancie created the character Q in the Star Trek, TNG TV show. He was always funny, fun interesting and engaging. He is all that here and he leads us and his old buddies Picard and Data on a romp across the universe to solve a mystery, and maybe even prevent the end of time itself! 3 stars is for good. 3 star uis for fun, and having delacie read the book himself, just made it fun to listen to. Sometimes the plot just got stupid. I went from laughing and smiling to Ughhhhh back and forth listening to this. In the end i liked it enough that i have listened to it several times now. It does get even better with a second listen, but it was 3 star on the first listen. Now if you like wierd sci fi... You may want to give this a 4 or 5.

I, Q.......2004-11-28
Almost any Star Trek fan will list Q as one of their favorite recurring characters. Well, any fan of Q will find this book (written by one of the best sci-fi humorists out there in conjunction with the man who played Q) to be a major treat. Fast-paced, witty, and just plain fun, I, Q takes you on a romp through hell and back through the eyes of our favorite trickster. This is a definite must-read for any Star Trek fan.

The Food Of Israel is an impressive compendium of authentic regional recipes that are beautifully presented and wonderfully illustrated with full-color photography. Part One, "Food in Israel" is an engagingly informative history of more than 3,000 years of Israeli culinary history, concluding with the New Israeli Cuisine. Part Three, "The Recipes" covers basic recipes, salads and appetizers, eggs, soups, breads and baked delicacies, stuffed foods and croquettes, fish, meat and poultry, and desserts. Not just Milk and Honey.......2000-08-21
The land of Israel is not only a land of Milk and Honey, but a land of seven main ingredients: olives, figs, dates, pomegranates, grapes, barley and bulgur wheat. The author, Ansky, is Jerusalem-born and is the food writer for Israel's prestigious MA'ARIV newspaper. The book opens with thirty pages of essays on the nature of Israel cuisine, and is followed by three pages of descriptions of ingredients. Each recipe is faced by an alluring, sensuous picture of the dish. Recipes include five eggplant salads, hummus, falafel, fatoush, shakshouka, Jerusalem kugel, patira, pastelicos, Etrog jam, Jerusalem Hamin, kibbeh, and Mussakhan (chicken with sumach and onions). Soups include a version of matzo ball, a kibbeh soup with beets and turnips, and lentil soup. Recipes for the Yemenite breads of malauach and Jachnun are included, in addition to recipes for lachma, and chickpeas with squid (well, maybe it isn't a kosher cookbook). Three exceptional recipes are Hraymi (a garlic halibut) which is the gefilte fish of the Sephardim; Leek Patties and Meat Cutlets in a lemon sauces; and Lamb Kebabs. Some recipes are from Israel's most famous restaurants and chefs.
