Book Description
Paula Wall, the national bestselling author of The Rock Orchard, returns with another witty, wise, and romantic tale of two sisters with a talent for seduction and the unfortunate habit of falling for the wrong man every time.
The Wilde sisters dove headfirst into this world on fire with life and expectation. With hair black as midnight and eyes blazing blue, they grow into truly irresistible women. But as well as being blessed with beauty and determination, the Wilde sisters are cursed with equal tastes for mischief and bad men. And both of these appetites always lead to trouble. Love either lifts a woman up or drags her down. When a Wilde woman dies, they don't have to dig a hole.
On Black Friday in Five Points, Tennessee, Pearl Wilde finds her sister, Kat, in the barn wearing both her favorite shoes and her fiancé. As quick to fury as she is to passion, Pearl leaves town immediately. She returns five years later a sophisticated femme fatale, with her claws sharpened like stainless steel and a demeanor so cool that the townspeople can no longer tell if she even has sweat glands. Slowly and deliberately, Pearl begins her revenge on Kat by captivating all the men of Five Points, but all the while never forgetting the one man who had the power to break her heart.
In The Wilde Women, Paula Wall once again bewitches the reader with humor, sass, smarts, and sensuality, creating a hilarious and beguiling world where sometimes the best revenge is forgiveness.
Paula Wall is the author of the national bestseller The Rock Orchard, as well as two collections of short pieces, My Love Is Free...But the Rest of Me Don't Come Cheap and If I Were a Man, I'd Marry Me. The latter was a semifinalist for the Thurber Prize. She currently lives outside of Nashville in a converted barn on 150 acres at the foot of the Highland Rim. Her nearest neighbor is one mile down the road, which, frankly, is a little too close for comfort. Visit her website at www.PaulaWall.com.

Funny and Sexy!.......2007-10-07
What a great suprise! I picked this up on a whim the other day at the library. I opened it while waiting in line and was immediatley hooked from the first page! Don't miss this one!
I can almost see this book as a movie or mini series. The characters are so funny and so likeable. I laughed out loud too many times to count. Pick up this book if you want a quick, quirky read full of unforgettable characters.
ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE READ THIS YEAR. AMAZING BIT OF WRITING!.......2007-09-09
When Paula Wall published her first novel, The Rock Garden, I read it and loved it and felt it was by far one of the best novels of that year. I was quite fearful that Ms. Wall was one of those one novel wonders and thought "what a shame." Fortunately my fears were for naught! With this second offering I truly feel the author out did even her first work, which I have said, is one of the best. This is good stuff here folks!
At first glance, the author could quite well be classified as a regional author as her novels take place in a specific geographical area. But, like Ferrol Sams (Run with the Horsemen, the first of his wonderful trilogy), Ms. Wall transcends geography and produces a work that most people, if not all people, can relate to. She is simply an excellent, gifted writer and a true master story teller. If, after reading the first five pages, your sides are not hurting from laughter, then something has to be wrong with your sense of humor. This lady is funny. Her one liners are beyond a doubt some of the best I've read in years.
This is a novel of the depression south. It is not a "romance" novel, a "bodice ripper" nor is it a "historical romance." It is the story of a small town in the south during the depression years. Yes, there is an element of romance woven into the story, fear not, but this simply in not what this work is about. The author hangs her story on two sisters, which are great characters, but are only a small part of the novel as a whole. We meet page after page of vivid characters. The author has a skill which allows her to, in one paragraph, convince the reader that they have known a character all of their life. The twists and turns of this story are absolutely amazing and complicated, yet not so complicated that it does not all make perfect sense as you read on. Even though the story and plot are wonderful, they are almost over shadowed by the author's keen sense of character development. In this work we have probably at least a dozen story lines going and they are all wonderfully interlinked as are the quirky characters sprinkled here and there. The ending of this work...well, you just have to read that yourself, but trust me, it is great. Like another reviewer here, I recommend you go ahead and buy this one as you will no doubt want to give it a reread. I cannot wait for her next work to come out!
Recommend this one highly.
Receives veteran Susan Ericksen's smooth voice .......2007-07-07
Paula Wall's THE WILDE WOMEN receives veteran Susan Ericksen's smooth voice and stage and screen background as it tells of sisters who have a taste for mischief and bad men. When one sister cheats with another's man, trouble begins which will lead to changes and danger.
Impossible To Put Down!.......2007-07-02
After reading 'The Rock Orchard' and LOVING it, I was so excited for the next Paula Wall book to come out! When my local library didn't have this available, I knew couldn't wait, so I went to the store and bought it! Well let me tell you, this book sure didn't disappoint! Two nights in a row I was up till 3am...I kept telling myself 'One more chapter, then I'll go to sleep, for REAL this time!'...and I couldn't do it :)
The Wilde women of Tennessee sure have a lot of fire in them, but the girls aside, this book is also about an entire town. I was surprised by how many characters were in this story, but I just couldn't wait to know more about each and every one of them! I highly recommend this book, and if you haven't read 'The Rock Orchard' yet, then make that the next book you read. Ms. Walls novels are just dripping with southern sensuality, good gossip, and irresistible characters. I only wish she wrote faster, cause I'm already looking forward to the next one!
Fun, Unputdownable, Witty Summer Read!.......2007-06-14
The old South is alive and well and kickin' in Paula Wall's books.
I wouldn't call her books historical romances....(that sounds so dry and boring) more like hilarious, witty novels of the South. When Pearl catches her little sister, Kat, with her legs up in the air and her fiance on board for the ride in the well house, she skips town and vows revenge, no matter the cost. Thus begins this witty, fascinating, fun novel. It's one of my favorite reads from my Summer reading list.
Pearl and Kat come from a long line of Wilde women who tend to be fiercely independent, beautiful, hard-headed and hot-blooded. Even though this book sounds like an old-fashioned `bodice-ripper' romance, it's not. Paula Wall is the undisputed queen of the one-liner and had me holding my sides from laughing so hard at the quips her characters uttered. I've never seen so many bitter, old hags who learned valuable life lessons from a creative, enterprising whore.
I loved the surprise ending which wrapped the story up perfectly. And when the old broad who tried so blatantly and creatively to kill her husband (being a widow was much preferred over being a wife for many women) got her comeuppance, I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. The chicken house scenes are worth the price of the book, for sure!
I borrowed this book from the library, but plan to buy my own copy as soon as it comes out in paper. This is a fabulous Summer read with characters who you won't soon forget.

The Unicorn Sonata.......2006-05-24
This book is very carefully bittersweet. Joey, short for Josephine, is disenchanted with modern life. She spends most of her time in a small California music shop owned by an old Greek man who gives her music lessons in exchange for her help around the store. One day she begins hearing strange, enchanting music, seemingly started by a mysterious boy named Indigo who plays an instrument unlike anything she has ever seen, and follows the melody until she stumbles into an entirely different world. Here she meets satyrs and tiny dragons and water-nymphs... and eventually, unicorns.
The plot in this book is somewhat subtle. You go into it thinking it will be a typical 80s/90s feel-good type of thing where a troubled young teenager has a great adventure, is bettered for it, and ends up loving the normal world just because s/he has grown up some over the course of the adventure. But eventually you see the book it is not about that at all, but more about Joey's keeping contact with it, her struggling desire to capture unicorn songs in the modern world, and unblinding the old unicorns. This book definitely has more to do with its world, the unicorns, and the simple obersvations of characters than it does with a plot. Luckily the story flows smoothly and this works out OK, if only because Peter S. Beagle is such an amazing author.
I did not like this book as much as I enjoyed The Last Unicorn, since I do typically get more swept up in dynamic storylines rather than subtle ones, but this book definitely kept my fancy well. It is also not quite as beautifully written as Peter S. Beagle's most well-known novel, but perhaps this one just speaks to me less on a personal level. I'm an unfortunate escapist, so I did instantly connect with Joey, but this story is just not as touching as The Last Unicorn.
Definitely a good novel and a book worth reading.
Fall asleep and dream of this beautiful fantasy world.......2005-06-07
I am a huge fan of the last unicorn and I've been collecting unicorns since I was a little girl (When The Last Unicorn movie came out in 1982). Even though this book is at about an elementary/Jr. High reading level, I had to pick it up and read it. I was not disappointed. I was drawn into the beautiful fantasy world created by Mr. Beagle. After finishing the book I went to sleep that night and had a wonderful dream that I was in the world with the unicorns and other creatures. You have to read this book and drift into this wonderful world of childhood, if only for one good dream.
A lovely book.......2003-09-22
This really is a beautiful book, and I believe if it had been published 20 years ago it would have been a huge seller in the fantasy market. I think the reason some of the other reviewers have not enjoyed the work as much is because this sort of fantasy kingdom has been portrayed before--Never Never Land, Middle Earth, Narnia--even the world of The Last Unicorn itself. Still, at the end, I found myself yearning for Beagle's mythical kingdom. And Abuelita is a wonderful character. A slower, older style, but worth finishing.
The Unicorn Sonata.......2003-04-10
The Unicorn Sonata, written by Peter S. Beagle, is about a lack-luster 13 year old girl named Josephine Riveira who accidentally stumbles upon a magical land called Shei'rah. The story that unfolds is both riveting and beautiful. The Unicorn Sonata is a wonderful read, accessible to both children and adults and successfully brings back the sort of magical world that we seem to have forgotten in today's chaotic society.
The Last Unicorn for elementary school readers!.......2003-02-24
I am huge fan of Beagle's "The Last Unicorn," and finally have decided to check out some of his other works. This is the first one I grabbed off the shelf because it is also about unicorns. I was a little disappointed because the plot is very slow and not that interesting, and the dialogue is not very deep or memorable. It lacks most of the lyrical qualities of "The Last Unicorn" in both plot and style. However, I don't think this a bad book!!! Its just different, that's all. I'm sure that Beagle had a different audience in mind. If I were 10 or 12 I would be raving about this book for sure! Call it a "Last Unicorn" for elementary school readers. "The Last Unicorn" is a difficult book after all, full of beautiful poetry, deep characters, and detailed descriptions. Perhaps this is a good stepping stone for younger readers to use... and eventually discover "The Last Unicorn!"

Book Description
For the crew of the Leonora Christine, travelling close to the speed of light on a 30-light-year journey, subjective time slows down. Then buffeting by an interstellar dust cloud damages the ship's deceleration system and it achieves light speed, tau zero itself.
Download Description
An outstanding work of science fiction by one of its most legendary authors, Poul Anderson?
Customer Reviews:
Martin's Review of "Tau Zero".......2007-08-11
This science fiction classic was thoroughly enjoyable, even though the ending was a bit of an anticlimax. It served as a reminder that, in any science fiction book, the science must take a back seat to the fiction. It was the human drama of how the passengers of the seemingly doomed ship handled their predicament that provided the best part of the story.
You need to read this........2007-07-12
This is one of the greatset science-fiction novels, probably the finest hard-science one. If you haven't read it, don't wait, do it NOW.
epic, light speed, promiscuous adventure - yeah!.......2007-06-14
This is perhaps the most epic book I've ever read. It's more epic than any "end of Earth" book and far more epic than any "human survivalist" story. This combines both "end of the entire universe" kind of story and "humans fight for survival" sort of story.
The spaceship, Leonora Christine, driven by a Bussard engine from earth becomes handicapped on its way to an earth-like planet. From there, the ship cannot decelerate and continues to pick up speed through 99% of light speed... and continues to climb to a billionth of a percent of light speed. Besides the 50 crew on the ship, the Leonora Christine itself feels like a character in need of sympathy. She hurls the crew through intrastellar space, time, the Milky Way, interstellar space, other remote galaxies and even further! Mind blowing originality. Wow.
The crew are a mild bunch of scientists and engineers. Being stuck together for three years with likelihood of being stuck together for possibly forever on their mission, they form non-traditional bonds. By that I mean they all have multiple partners. From this act, all the characters inevitably become involved with one another in one way or another, whether they like it or not. Self sufficient or self destructive?

With 100 recipes inspired by an unforgettable era of horseback heroes, THE TEXAS COWBOY KITCHEN is the newest cookbook from America's celebrated cowboy-turned-chef, Grady Spears. A combination of Grady's inimitable spin on gratifying, hearty food, and the romance of the famous Chisholm Trail where cowboys drove cattle some 130-odd years ago, this beautifully illustrated book turns simple cowboy food into gourmet creations. Palate-pleasing eats from Grady's newest hit restaurant, the Chisholm Club, reflect an upscale-rustic spirit in food and language and offer a refined take on the trail-driving campfire cuisine of days gone by.
Customer Reviews:
Sorry but no real Texas Cowboy that I have ever known would cook any of this.......2006-05-14
I love the beautiful photos of real cowboys- a nice pictorial history. I am sure the recipes actually taste good, and I am not accusing Grady of not being a real cowboy, I am sure he was. But sadly to me, he continues the trend of taking traditional food, which was fairly simple and tasty in itself, and re-inventing it to make it fancy restaurant fare. Like Barbecued Quail Tamales with Avocado Cream. I ordered it looking for some classic dishes that are so very good, that I might actually make. I started to order another of his books, that has a great title- just what I am looking for, but now really don't think so. I am sorry- a lot of people would love this, the contents just don't seem to go so well with the title. Perhaps 'The Modern Texas Kitchen' would have been better.
Beautiful, and great recipes.......2003-12-04
This is a gorgeous, coffee table-type cookbook with its beautiful historic photos of cowboys and Texas. But the recipes are also terrific. Spears is a famous chef, but the recipes are very home cook-friendly. And lots of Texas favorites, like an updated version of Frito pie with venison chili. Only one I didn't like that much was a Dr Pepper cake. But the meat recipes are great. So are the campfire cocktails!
A New Frontier in American Cooking!!.......2003-10-15
It has been a ton of fun looking through my newest cookbook!! I have even tried a couple of the recipes! The addition of the Smith photos (from the Amon Carter Collection) is a huge bonus...they add a dimension to the book that is unique but somehow essential. Ever since I got the first Reata cookbook I've thought it could not be improved upon. I was dead wrong. Everyone I have showed this book to has had the same reaction...it is the most appealing "cookbook" they have ever seen! The reason I put the word in quotes is that it is to everyone who has seen it much more than a recipe binder and that is what I like about it best. It is one part history, one part food, sprinkled with Texana, a story unfolding from a passionate soul. Fire up the stove and gather 'round!! It's time to eat!!
Congratulations, Grady!! You have much to be proud of!!

Often showing specially photographed items, these are guides no collector can afford to be without.
Customer Reviews:
Affordable, enjoyable, and clear.......2003-08-29
I just purchased and read the book "Staffordshire Figures of the 19th and 20th Centuries". I chose this book because, compared to the other Staffordshire books, this one is affordable at [money amount]. Any concerns I had about quality were dispelled when I received the book. It is a richly illustrated visual guide. The images, though smallish (1.5 in. horiz. x 2.5 in. vertically) are clear and colorful. The commentary is nicely chunked for easy comprehension, and the prose is enjoyable. A small 'fact-file' section on each recto page introduces useful tips and tidbits for collectors. Buy this one first. You'll be pleased.
Miller's Staffordshire Figures of the 19th & 20th Centuries,.......2001-02-23
As an amature collector of Staffordshire Figures, I was looking for an inexpensive book to help with my collecting. In the City where I live, one can rarely find Staffordshire figures for sale. I started collecting on ebay and through that site I ran across Miller's book that Kit Harding and A. & N. Harding, who listed Staffordshire figures, consulted in writing. I cannot say enough good things about this book for the novice such as myself. It was a great quick reference book. The descriptions of the figures and excellent color photos helped me with the basic knowledge of the figures. This book listed prices and what factors to look for in distinguishing the authentic from fake. I highly recommend this book for any serious collector.

All over the world, down through history, people have turned "bad weather into great sculpture. Snowmen are hip, they're trendy, you could even say they're cool." But snowmen are the least of what you can build, given snow, time, and a copy of this fantastic how-to book! Build anything--or anyone--from Snowby Dick to PicasSnow to the snow-free delicious Meringue Man; the winter world is your oyster. This delightful little book celebrates the joys of the white stuff, and provides "recipes" for dozens of witty, beautiful, and impressive polar creations. Emphasizing use of natural materials (pine needles and cones, twigs, icicles, pebbles) and everyday household objects (toothpicks, wigs, pot lids, eggplants), the authors encourage sculptors to seek inspiration and have fun. Hard to imagine how anyone could not have fun creating a real, candlelit arctic hearth. Or an adorable, albeit prickly, porcupine. Has that artistic temperament turned sluggish due to cold and hunger? Try a couple of white chocolate-coated marshmallow "snowmen" in a cup of hot cocoa. Frankie Frankeny's wonderfully helpful photos of all these marvelous creations are interspersed with old black-and-white family shots of kids being kids in the snow. Don't wait for the first blizzard to hit--start planning a snow extravaganza now! (Ages 3 to 103) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:
Great Book, Poor Binding.......2007-01-17
I loved the book and have tried many of the snowmen. Very fun ideas. The only problem was the spiral binding. For a book that has this many laminated pages the paper holding the spiral in isn't strong enough.
GENIUS!.......2002-02-17
THIS BOOK IS SO CHOCK FULL OF CREATIVITY! KIDS CAN'T PUT IT DOWN! AND THERE IS A LITTLE SOMETHING IN IT FOR THE ADULT AS WELL!! ENJOY!!!
A winter wonderland of fun.......2000-01-30
When the snow starts to fall, and the winter blues get you down...pick up this book and have some fun. This book provides inspiration as well as step-by-step instructions to create wonderful snow creations. The photographs are great, and the pages are plastic coated so you can take the book outside in the snow. As the author of Aha! - 10 Ways To Free Your Creative Spirit and Find Your Great Ideas, I am always in search of fun books to add to my "inspiration library". "Snowmen" has a place on my shelves... and with the kids in the yard.
A Snowy Inspiration For Your Winter Window Heart View.......1999-11-10
Last year, I moved back "up north" with my son after nine years in sunny Florida. I had forgotten what a "warm" feeling you get while snuggled in a warm home basking in the beauty of the snow outside. We created funny little mounds of snow on fences and window sills which delighted up even more once back inside our toasty haven. We enjoyed the snow silhouettes created by nature herself in the form of tree angels. This delightful book, of which I purchased three alone as gifts, has inspired me to a new winter wonderway of welcoming the new millenium, creating snow art. There are such clever ideas for bringing snow joy into our lives in this book. My twelve year old son was so enthralled by the book that he said he would pay for half of it. Imagine that? With all the books available for making indoor Christmas crafts, this book reminds us of the joy of working in and with nature, all the while reflecting on how wonderful it will look and feel while snuggled back inside. A wonderfully creative and joyful book. With high regard,
This book was a huge disappointment!.......1999-11-09
I purchased this book for our library and was really disappointed. The crafts and activities aren't very interesting and didn't inspire me to want to do a single project. For a better investment buy "Christmas Crafts and Entertaining", put out by Creative Publishing. Now that is a great book with great ideas and great instructions. I've already made two table runners.

Pablo Picasso once said, "There are only two types of women--goddesses and doormats." The ever-sassy Star Jones, watched by millions as cohost of The View, shares that opinion, and here in You Have to Stand... she aims to shake the living daylights out of the doormat in all of us. Unlike many autobiographical books these days, Jones's is truly absorbing reading. While she vividly recounts her lifetime of "rocking the boat," she imparts many nice, swift kicks in the pants.
Formerly a senior district attorney in Brooklyn, New York (where stabbing someone in the chest is a misdemeanor), and a Court TV commentator, Jones is known for her singular, take-no-baloney attitude. She caused a media ruckus during the William Kennedy Smith rape trial by saying that any woman who can't remember taking off a pair of control-top pantyhose "has a credibility problem." She says she doesn't want to know that President Clinton "has a hard-on in a little cubby next to the Oval Office." Her pro-choice stance, she says, "goes against how I was raised and what I was taught, and yet at the same time I recognize that my beliefs aren't everyone's. If abortion is antithetical to your beliefs, then by all means don't have an abortion. But don't tell me what I can and cannot believe."
Jones freely reveals what pisses her off in the hopes of instilling a similar stand-up-for-yourself attitude in her readers. She shares her fiesty opinions on such topics family and friends, God, television, politics, and racism. Not only does she rally against the closed-minded, but she makes a point of criticizing the wishy-washy as well, making this a roiling, rivetingly good book. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
Smart, funny, provocative--she writes it like she talks it on The View!
Strongly held beliefs, a wicked sense of humor, and take-no-prisoners opinions--her many fans have come to expect all this and more from Star Jones, co-host of ABC-TV's hit show The View.
In this remarkable book, the former New York City prosecutor shows why she has become one of the most quoted and respected media personalities of our time. Here she touches fearlessly on subjects both conventional and controversial, such as the importance of family and friendship, the law, racism, abortion, television, politics, and her relationship with God. And she does it all with a unique and refreshing viewpoint that will make you think twice about everything you thought you knew.
Here, too, is her powerful and intensely personal story, told with warmth, humor, and sometimes painful candor. This is an empowering memoir by a remarkable woman who not only walks the walk and talks the talk but challenges you to do the same.
Customer Reviews:
Very True.......2006-06-20
I read this book before Star was popular I don't recall The View even being on the air or at least I wasn't watching it. But as an aspiring attorney I was compelled to read this book. I enjoyed it greatly; I understand why she was such a successful lawyer. In a day and age where "anything goes." The title of this book is excellent. It's a good read and gives you great insight into her life, before the glitz and glam. Great read and inspiration to someone that wants to "be somebody."
What Does She Stand For, Anyway?.......2006-02-24
The first two chapters were extremely boring. She talks about a white lady who wants her black friend buried in the white cemetery. The lady stands for something, Star says. She also talks about her mom, who got pregnant with Star, then dumped her off on a crew of some very obliging relatives in North Carolina while she finished college at Rutgers University. Once graduated, and having obtained a "good" job she reclaims 6 year old Star and they live in the projects along with Star's new baby sister (who had not been dumped off on relatives). While living in the projects, little kids run back and forth across the street to the store, unsupervised. When Star is eight years old, she sees a little boy hit by a truck and killed. She's proud when her mom is arrested at a sit-in on the street to protest the lack of a light signal. Later, her mom marries and Star says that at first, her mom and her husband both have "low-paying" jobs. What happened to the "good" job? And if it's such a good job, why are they living in the projects?
The rest is basically a brag-fest. Her whole family has done nothing but praise her to the skies her entire life, so that's why she's brimming with supreme self-confidence. So why is she writing this book? Well, to tell you that you too can be a diva. Star gives fashion lessons (but for full-figured women only - and she hates that term but adores her 42DD's) - wear a chiffon duster over your clothes, and never ride in a white limo because they are tacky, a black Mercedes limo is the best, but if you have to, a Cadillac will do. A red SUV will also display you to the best advantage. Star's role model is Erica Kane from the soap opera All My Children, which says something about her priorities.
I do have one question. Star says she is disappointed one Christmas because her dad (who lives in NC) promised her a stereo. Her mom, seeing that no stereo is about to materialize, runs out in the middle of the night to purchase one for her with money that they don't really have. This would be about 1974 - before 24 hour Walmarts and KMarts. So where did she find this stereo in the middle of the night?
But most of the book is about how great and wonderful Star is, and if you ever do anything to hurt her or make her mad, she'll never forget it. And she doesn't care who doesn't like her because her step-daddy told her she is fine!
I think Star is leaving out a lot she doesn't want us to know.
Pointless.......2006-01-20
It is unclear what and why the author writes. She obviously has nothing of importance or substance to impart, and her personality is uninteresting by all standards. Most people overcome stronger adversities in life and they do it with infinite more grace. Why the author feels her life is more remarkable than others is really mind-boggling. Reading this book is a waste of time and buying it is a waste of money. There is really no message in this book and the author, despite her much self-praised legal training, fails to build any minimal argument on any of her potluck of topics.
Simplistic, at best; merely stupid.
Why does she have to be so FABULOUS?.......2006-01-20
Star Jones is an inspiration. Her bravery and courage, I'll call it "bravage," is the standard to which every American should hold themselves (and possibly some Canadians). In this book she chronicles her struggles with IBS, HPV, lycanthropy, fear of elves, crossing guard's elbow and having been born without humility. For the first time really, we see that Star's not just fabulous in fur, she's fabulous in print. If I could get my arms around her, I'd hug her. Star's spirit cannot be held down by her lack of any discernable talent! Bravo!
worthless.......2005-09-29
This woman can not write, her book has no substance, there is basically nothing to review. What is interesting is how much weight she has lost from then to now. Star claims she has not had a gastric bypass......... could have fooled me. My friend tommy met her, he said she is rude and smelly. She is the most annoying person on the view. who did she screw to get on the view?
