Paints an unrivalled portrait of the vanished world of pre-1914 Hungary, as seen through the eyes of two young aristocratic Transylvanian cousins.
Customer Reviews:
They Were Counted.......2007-08-27
This classic of Hungarian literature is a superb fictionalized depiction of early 20th century Hungary and Austria, told primarily through the lives of two cousins. The cousins, Count Balint Abady and Count Laszlo Gyeroffy, are caught up in the world of the demise of the Austro-Hungarian empire, the resulting political and social upheavals, and a frivolous and decadent aristocracy. The lives of the counts, including the choices they make, are used by the author to comment on human nature and how choices they make impact the lives of many others. The novel very authentically depicts the broad tapestry of Hungarian society, from the lives of peasants, merchants, political leaders to the members of the aristocracy during this important period of history. The author, Miklos Banffy, is a terrific storyteller. A very remarkable novel - very highly recommended.
An outstanding epic novel.......2001-02-24
I am not someone much given to extravagant praise, but I have no hesitation in awarding five stars to 'They were counted', a novel of very high quality indeed. I had only ever read of Count Miklos Banffy as foreign minister of Hungary in the 1920s. I had no idea that he was also an extremely accomplished novelist. His pace is leisurely, to be sure, but his writing is so good that this is hardly a failing. The novel paints a splendid picture of aristocratic life in Hungary circa 1905, but it possesses much more than historical interest. Banffy writes about his characters with intelligence, perception, and sympathy. I was rather taken aback to see Laszlo Gyeroffy described in one review as 'a heartless sybarite'. On reflection, I suppose the cap does fit - but Banffy presents even Laszlo in such a way that one cannot help feeling for him. The author is especially sensitive in his handling of relations between the sexes. The tortured romance between Balint and Adrienne is superbly delineated. May I offer readers one word of advice? Like many other really big novels - 'The Forsyte Saga' and 'Doctor Zhivago' spring to mind - this book can seem rather daunting at the start. The problem is simply that there are so many characters that it is difficult to lodge them in the mind. Do not worry! Most of them do not need to be followed closely. I will not spoil anyone's enjoyment if I state now that the ones to keep your eye on are Balint abady, Laszlo Gyeroffy, Adrienne Uzdy, Klara Kollonich, Egon Wickwitz, and Fanny Beredy. Incidentally, I do think that the publisher might have included some guidance as to how to pronounce Hungarian names. True, it is not strictly necessary, but my curiosity was aroused, and to satisfy it even partially I had to resort to the pronunciation pages of 'Teach Yourself Hungarian' in the city library. I congratulate Patrick Thursfield on his fine English translation and thank Arcadia Books for enabling English readers to become acquainted with an author who deserves to be much better known than he is.
Romance, passion and politics in pre-war Hungary.......2000-03-28
I couldn't put this book down - a huge and completely gripping novel set in the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A portrait of society worthy of Dickens, with the historical sweep of Tolstoy and the psychological insights of Dostoevsky. I can't wait for the next volumes.

Book Description
A magnificent, colorful novel of the circus world of the 1940s and 1950s, rich in detail, bursting with power and emotion.
Mario Santelli, a member of the famous flying Santelli family, is a great trapeze artist. Tommy Zane is his protege.
As naturally and gracefully as they soar through the air, the two flyers find themselves falling in love. Mario and Tommy share sweet stolen moments of passion, but the real intensity of their relationship comes from their total devotion to one another and to their art.
As public figures in a conservative era, they cannot reveal their love. But they will never renounce it.
A tremendously moving tale, a rich family saga, a wise and compassionate portrait of a special love in a special world.
Customer Reviews:
A stunning tale of gay love .......2007-07-12
Circus raised red headed and freckled Tommy Zane is fourteen years old when he begins to achieve his dream ambition, the year is 1944. The son of a circus lion tamer, he has little interest in continuing in his father's footsteps but is intent on being a flyer on the high trapeze. When twenty two year old Mario Santelli, youngest member of the Flying Santellis invites him to try out on the trapeze it is the beginnings of everything Tommy will ever live for.
The dark and handsome Mario is a hard task master and gives no quarter to his young student, but that does not prevent his young admirer idolising him; and when Mario discreetly seduces him he quietly submits. The two become inextricably entwined both in and out of the circus, and the story follows their fraught but devoted relationship and the trials they have to endure as lovers in a society intolerant of a man's love for another, not to mention the fact that Tommy is underage when the relationship begins.
Tommy is a delightful character, as a youngster he is pliant, dedicated and full of enthusiasm, and over the period of the tale we watch him become a man of character. As he is brought into the Flying Santellis act he is also lovingly accepted into the Santelli family. The Santelli family spans at least three generations, and we get to know the members of this proud and exclusive family very well. Mario is very different from Tommy; troubled, moody, often distant, and possessing a fiery temper; despite his frequent aggressiveness towards Tommy, he is unable to live without him.
This is without doubt a most beautiful story. That the relationship between Mario and Tommy will endure we are left in no doubt for the writer skilfully weaves into the fabric of the story how Tommy later looks back on events, but that by no means lessens the drama; for not only do we have all the ups and downs of their relationship and career, but we also have the added tension in the descriptions of the flying.
I must rate this amongst the very best books I have read. It took me a while to read, not because it is long, which it is at nearly 700 pages, but simply because I did not want to hurry it but wanted to truly savour every part of it; and then there were so many passages I simply had to re-read, especially Tommy's intimate dialogues with Mario and occasionally others, for they were so beautiful and moving. I cannot recommend this book too highly
one of my favorites.......2006-01-05
i love this book. the characters are so real, the setting so tangible, the period so deftly evoked, that i have twice stayed up all night reading it. it has its flaws (a little melodrama, some awkward dialogue) but the whole package is so delicious that i don't mind them. if you haven't read it, you have something to look forward to!
One of the richest books I've ever read -don't miss it.......2005-09-16
Being a Darkover die hard MZB fan, I special ordered this in the 80s when it was first published. It is a shame it was so difficult to find -- if you didn't know about it, you'd be unlikely to find it in a bookstore. I am so glad I did know and so grateful for Ballantine for publishing what had to be a risky venture.
As much of a Darkover fan as I was, this rises about Darkover, even above Mist of Avalon to me, because it paints such a rare and wonderful picture of a circus family, of circus life and the families that make it up. There are very few books that paint such a rich picture, that take you so completely and absolutely into a life, a world, and a family and make you feel a part of it. All of them,Mario/Matt, Tommy, Papa Tony, Angelo, Lucia, Liss, Johnny, Tommy's parents, and the myriad performers in the circus -- it is as if they were real. The detail on flying is impressively researched. All the circus details make you feel you are a part of the circus backyard.
Though the novel is long and occasionally repetitive, I understand why it is so, and wouldn't see a word cut, indeed I wish it were longer. I wish she had written a sequel.
To think that she wrote this in 1948 boggles the mind. MZB is known for relationship writing, conventional and not, in depth and with meaning. The choices and consequences, the sacrifices, pitfalls and joys of all the relationships are intelligently explored with a perceptive hand.
It is a treasure well worth reading, that should be acquired, that shouldn't be missed. Sad that too many will miss this underreported gem. Don't be one of them.
A must read........2005-07-22
The people who are browsing through these reviews, wondering whether they will buy the Catch Trap, are very fortunate. They are very fortunate because they have yet to discover something that is very rare and very precious - a book that totally engulfs and captivates the attention of the reader. Only a very few books have done that to me - maybe half a dozen - and it happened mostly a long time ago, when I was about 15 to 20. With the Catch Trap, I felt that way again and for that, I am very grateful towards Marion Zimmer Bradley. So don't hesitate any longer - buy the Catch Trap and enjoy it.
One of my all-time favourites.......2005-02-08
This book is certainly one of the best books I have ever read -- and I have read it at least 3 times. Zimmer Bradley really did her homework. The atmosphere in the book is beautifully depicted. You can almost smell the circus. You are drawn into the story, unable to put the book down.
The love story between Tommy and Mario/Matt is essential, yet Zimmer Bradley manages to tell a gay love story in a way that appeals to everybody (who is without predjudices, that is of course). Longing, the difficulties of growing up, beauty, ambition, loss and sacrifices that need to be made mix together and really make you suffer and "live" with the characters.
I was 14 when I first read the book, and still now, at the age of 25, I love it.
The German translation is very good as well, by the way :-).

This is cool!.......1999-08-29
I read this book little by little in the magazine isle of a store. I haven't read any other books in this series yet, but this was totally awesome!
great slide-off-your seat excitement.......1998-07-15
Elena Vargas is an 8th grade student at Metier High. She is about to turn 13.On her thirteenth birthday, she begins to have strange visions, like what questions wil be on a test. But then the visions turn for the worst, and she sees a vision of a terrifying creature with black disk eyes, chasing her through the woods.....
Sort of dumb.......1998-03-15
The book was good, but I was confused about the part of Kate Kellison and Elana Vargas. This book was *not* about Kate Kellison, so which book is Kate in? This book was about Elana. It's her bithday and she goes to the mall and sees a fortune-teller. She lights the candle she got. Next day, she has visions that come true. I liked the math test one where she proved to that girl that they'd have a pop quiz. What happens to Elana though...........?

The Religious Right's emergence as a powerful political force owes a large debt to Ralph Reed, executive director of the Christian Coalition. "Perhaps the finest political operative of his generation," is how the Wall Street Journal once referred to him. The Christian Coalition was formed in 1990 and has quickly become an important element in American politics. In
Active Faith, Reed trumpets his cause and presents his views on how the movement can keep its clout. Much of his agenda focuses on adopting Christian values throughout society; even the religious right faces its critics.
Customer Reviews:
Persuasive defense of Conservative Activism.......2005-01-02
Ralph Reed's "Active Faith" is effective in refuting the attacks against Christian Conservative "activism" (i.e. speaking out about issuses just as all other Americans have the right to do) that seem to be on the rise recently (especially after the re-election of President Bush). For that reason, the book is timely, even though it was written about a decade ago. Reed's critics may not like him any better after reading his book, but his fair minded critics would have to give him credit for being much more fair and thoughtful than those who demonize Reed and other "activist" Christian Conservatives would have us believe.
A call to action for born-again Christians.......1999-07-02
Ralph Reed expertly makes the case that political and civic activism among Christians to combat the great social evils of our day is an unalienable component of being a believer in Jesus Christ. From slavery, to segregation, to abortion, Mr. Reed explains how Christians have been the moral foundation of stubborn opposition to these great evils of history and present times.
Furthermore, he unmasks how the bigoted modern left has tried to create a culture of intimidation against people of faith who dare speak out against the politically correct sacred cows of sexual license and the barbaric killing of unborn babies. He also skillfully reveals how classical liberalism, which was once a champion for the rights of the little guy, has been perverted in modern times into being an oppressor of the littlest guy, the unborn child.
Those of you who want the government to stay out of your "bedrooms" (while you have abortions, I suppose - now that's kinky!) will want to take a pass on this one.
The Christian Right is neither.......1998-10-06
I see nothing in this book that has any connection to the unconditional love Christ preached about, and even less that resembles the life which he led.
How can Reed ignore that Jesus stood with the poor and against the social structures that keep them that way - the same social structres Reed and his followers work night and day to keep?
Doesn't Jesus figure in here somewhere?.......1998-10-06
That Reed and his followers still claim that the "Christian" Coalition is a non-partisian organization, remains on of the biggest jokes in American politics in the second half of the 20th century.
Reed's agenda bears little if any resemblance towards the message of Jesus Christ whose commitment to the poor and outcasts was a threat to the Pharasee's (the Reed's of Jesus' time). How anyone can read the Gospel's and subscribe to this mean spirited agenda is one of the great mysteries of the 1990's.
GO CHRISTIAN COALITION!.......1998-08-30
I have read this wonderfully Republican and Christian novel!! I recommend it to anyone who thinks that morality is falling in America. The Christian Coalition has been the greatest thing that happened since Reagon was in office!
I truly believe that this novel correctly addresses all of the problems that America is suffering, and I trully believe that with the help of the Christian Coalition and the Republican Party all of our problems will be fixed! If you love Pat Robertson, then this novel is for you!

It's a browser's treasure of culinary etymological lore, but there's a table of contents that bespeaks a structure, starting with foods named for what they look like (such as rambutan, the sweet, red-bristle-covered fruit named for rambut, the Malay word for hair; or cabbage, which arose from the Old North French caboche, meaning head, making the phrase "a head of cabbage" redundant). Next comes a chapter on food names associated with religion and the supernatural (from angel-food cake and cappuccino, named after the brown cloaks of Capuchin monks, to pumpernickel, which supposedly means devil fart). There's a section on foods named by mistake, covering misnomers like geoduck, Bombay duck, and cold duck, none of which is related to the fowl, and a chapter on foods named for people and places, like Beef Wellington, Fettuccine Alfredo, Tootsie Rolls, and even Carpaccio (named after Renaissance artist Vittore Carpaccio, whose work often displayed a predilection for red).
Barnette delves into the stories of foods named for what's done to them or what they do to us (such as bangers, British sausages that'll explode if not pricked before cooking, and aubergine, which derives, via Arabic and Persian, from the Sanskrit for antifart vegetable.) And finally, there's a chapter on words derived from other words about food and drink, such as the dog term mutt, which came from muttonhead as an insult applied to dull people, which came from the assumption of stupidity of sheep, i.e., mutton.
Its index makes it a bona fide language reference, but it's more than just an academic resource. It's an etymologist's dream, a food lover's fantasy, and a general delight for anyone who takes joy in words and trivia. In telling the stories behind the names of foods, Barnette proves, as writers M.F.K. Fisher, Harold McGee, and Calvin Trillin have before, that a love of food and a fascination with language are not incompatible. --Stephanie Gold
Book Description
"Everything in [this book] is delightful to learn. Barnette takes us through languages and across millennia in a charming style . . . that offers endless food for thought." --The New Yorker
What makes the pretzel a symbol of religious devotion, and what pasta is blasphemous in every bite? How did a drunken brawl lead to the name lobster Newburg? What naughty joke is contained in a loaf of pumpernickel? Why is cherry a misnomer, and why aren't refried beans fried twice? You'll find the answers in this delectable exploration of the words we put into our mouths.
Here are foods named for the things they look like, from cabbage (from the Old North French caboche, "head") to vermicelli ("little worms"). You'll learn where people dine on nun's tummy and angel's breast. There are foods named after people (Graham crackers) and places (peaches), along with commonplace terms derived from words involving food and drink (dope, originally a Dutch word for "dipping sauce"). Witty, bawdy, and stuffed with stories, Ladyfingers and Nun's Tummies is a feast of history, culture, and language.
"Why didn't anyone think of this before? . . . What fun Martha Barnette has made of it all, every name for every dish explained and traced and jollied." --William F. Buckley, Jr.

If Your Recipes Include Foods AND Words..........2004-06-30
I admit I'm a lover of both food and words, so this delicious book seemed the right menu choice when I borrowed it from the library recently. I was not disappointed; I have since purchased my own copy for reference in my food writing. The book is erudite, of course, but delightfully so. The origins of many of our food terms may indeed be obscure, but now that I have feasted on this little masterpiece, I no longer feel comfortable eating things with titles I cannot explain. Martha Barnette does go off on tangents that some may find vexing, explaining word relations that only begin with cuisine, but in doing so she adds richness to the stew. Both food and language are quintessentially civilizing; she's melded the two into an important book for any culinary or literary shelf.

Deliciously funny AND nourishing for the mind.......2000-08-23
I've never written one of these reviews, but I just had to stop by and say what a big kick I got out of Martha Barnette's clever book. I bought it because I love food and cooking, but after reading "Ladyfingers and Nun's Tummies", I also bought a copy to send to my sister, because she's one of those people who're crazy about words and their origins.
If you're like us, you'll learn a whole lot from this little book -- and enjoy a whole lot of laughs in the process!
A "feast of words" for any lover of food and language........1999-03-18
I LOVED this book! The author has an amazing range of knowledge, both about the kitchen and about words, but what's truly wonderful is her terrific sense of humor, which makes learning all this stuff so much fun.
I mean, who knew that Tootsie Rolls were named after a little girl or that Twinkies were named after shoes? Or that German chocolate cake isn't really German and Swiss steak isn't really Swiss? Or that the Italians like to nibble a plum they call a "nun's thigh," while the Dutch like to chow down on a dish of string beans and navy beans with a picturesque name that translates: "bare buttocks in the grass"?
This is the perfect gift for the cook or food lover who has everything!
Interesting but could be improved with food photos........1997-08-21
I enjoyed this romp through gastronomic etymology. But the publisher should have printed in a more readable type-face, included pictures of the foods discussed, and edited out some of the redundancies. Also, the footnotes are too small to read easily, and much too detailed. It runs between a scholarly work and a Martha Stuart Living magazine. But I look forward to anything else written by Barnette, and I will devour it as I did this book (so to speak)
It's intelligent AND funny!.......1997-05-10
This is one of the best word books I have ever seen. It's intelligent without being dry, and hilarious without being sophomoric. You can dip through it like selecting all the cream centers from a box of chocolates; or you can just start at the beginning and devour the whole thing in one hedonistic draught. "Nun's Tummies" is also featured on a killer Website,

WONDERFUL!!!.......2007-08-07
Oh, my gosh, where do I start!! This book is fabulous and I want to make every afghan in it. You can't go wrong it getting this book, especially if you collect good crochet books, like I do. The directions are easy to understand and so well written. Hope they put out more books like this one.
Beautiful afghans, but be prepared for errors.......2007-03-02
I LOVE a lot of these patterns, and the first I have tried is the cover "Blue Star". A group of friends and I are all making it. It's a good thing we're working together, because we have found 3 LARGE errors in it that aren't in the company's "corrections". Even though we've notified them of these errors, they don't seem to have made it into the official set of corrections. It's frustrating to have to rip a lot of things out because of editing issues.
MOST of these afghans are crochet, a few knit, and several are "afghan stitch" or tunisian.
Herrschner's Blue-Ribbon Afgans (Crochet Treasury) IS THE TREASURE!.......2007-02-18
Ok, so I purchased this to replace my lost copy. I made the cover afghan a few years ago in the blue and loved it SO MUCH I made it again, for my mother in browns (she's a browns and beiges sorta persoN) Man I just LOVE this pattern. And there are so many others to try. I am an afghan pattern book collector and have books that are over 35 yrs old and older but this is hands down my most favorite. I have no clue how my original one got misplaced because I keep all of my books in the same place, unless its stashed with a bag of yarn somewhere accidentially but this seriously is THE BEST book for Afghans and I FULLY HIGHLY AND COMPLETELY RECOMMEND IT! Even for just the cover afghan, it makes up so nice. I used Caron Simply Soft and its just so cuddly. This book is a MUST have for your pattern collection.. or to start a collection.
Wonderful afghan book.......2007-01-06
This book was well worth the money I spent. The pictures are very helpful and the directions have been relatively easy to follow. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in different patterns. These afghans are not ones you see in every pattern book in the store.
Caution.......2006-03-25
I've been Crocheting for over ten years but a friend wanted me to make the Irish Lattis pattern. And I found a ton of mistakes. The way they have the pattern written does not match the picture at all and they tell you that the wrong side of the afghan is the right side sometimes. I wouldn't suggest getting this book unless you have a little more experience and can easily fix the problems otherwise you might get very confused with the instructions. I'm assuming since that pattern is so off there are mistakes in the other designs as well.
