The Environmental Imagination: Thoreau, Nature Writing, and the Formation of American Culture
ASIN: 0877457204 |
Book Description
Recent Thoreau studies have shifted to an emphasis on the "green" Thoreau, on Thoreau the environmentalist, rooted firmly in particular places and interacting with particular objects. In the wake of Buell's Environmental Imagination, the nineteen essayists in this challenging volume address the central questions in Thoreau studies today: how "green," how immersed in a sense of place, was Thoreau really, and how has this sense of place affected the tradition of nature writing in America?
The contributors to this stimulating collection address the ways in which Thoreau and his successors attempt to cope with the basic epistemological split between perceiver and place inherent in writing about nature; related discussions involve the kinds of discourse most effective for writing about place. They focus on the impact on Thoreau and his successors of culturally constructed assumptions deriving from science, politics, race, gender, history, and literary conventions. Finally, they explore the implications surrounding a writer's appropriation or even exploitation of places and objects.

putting Thoreau back in his place!.......2004-09-05
This is an extremely interesting and useful collection of papers by leading Thoreauvian scholars. By focusing upon the landscape (both physical and intellectual) we finally have a good idea of how Thoreau was influenced by the world around him. I made ample use of this important work when writing my own book Profitably Soaked: Thoreau's Engagement With Water (Green Frigate Books, 2003).

As the Magickers seek the third and most important Gate into the magic-filled land of Haven, the elder members are being stricken by a strange ailment that drains their power and ages them. And the Dark Hand is more than willing to take advantage of the Magickers' weakness to strike...

"Drake shows a skilled hand at description and atmosphere. Though occasionally there is an awkward passage or two, overall she's very effective at evoking responses. One of the most effective scenes in the book is when a boy burns out his magic, and Drake handles his response delicately and very saddeningly. Among the chilling scenes are the Wolfjackal's attack on Jason and its later attempt to lure him over to evil, and the bizarre dreams that are connected to his future as a Magicker. My only real beef is that the response of the kids to learning about the Magickers seems a little too casual."
-- E. A Solinas "ea_solinas" (MD USA)
"From the first line, I was hooked. Emily Drake's expert writing leads you on a marvelous adventure in which magic is very, very different than JK Rowling's world."

More Harry Potter -- Good or Bad.......2006-11-22
The Magickers, by Emily Drake, is the tale of Jason, a young boy with a bad family situation. Living with his stepparents because his mother and father died, Jason does not feel accepted. he is invited to a camp, which is shrouded in mystery. here, counselors seem to float around, and unheard of animals attack. this is no camp--it is a school for magick. The students are learning magick to battle the dark hand...sound farmiliar? that is what i thought too. it is almost exactly the same as Harry Potter. still, it manages to keep you on your toes. A great read!
Don't waste your time............2005-08-14
Billed as an "American Harry Potter", it's so far from the truth it's laughable.
Where Harry Potter has pure magic, incredible fantasy, and knows how it feels to be a kid, The Magickers' plot is trite, slow-paced and plain dull, with a definite '60s' feel to it - as if the author doesn't have a clue about kids today. The characters are dull, the dialogue is so ridiculous it's laughable, and the plot goes nowhere. I can't believe I waded through to the end of it, hoping it would get better.
Does anyone want a free copy of the second book in the series? There's no way I'm going to waste any more time on reading this author's books.
A wonderful story filled with action, adventure, and more!.......2004-12-19
I have been reading the Magicker series ever since it came out. I have fallen in love with these charcaters and find that this series is just as good, if not better, than Harry Potter. Jason has gripped my heart many times and I have found my heart racing along with his during his trails of fear, heartache, and betrayal. The characters in this story makes me want to believe that they are real and that they will all survive what is happening to them. This book in the series left me baffled and my heart racing. I can't wait to read the next one and many more!
So-So........2004-12-12
I originally picked up this book because it looked mildly interesting... and really, that's all it turned out to be. It's sort of sad that it's such a rip-off of Harry Potter; the author seems to have plenty of good ideas of her own. I also appreciated the references to other fantasy books, though I have a feeling it's an example of the literary uh-oh 'pepper-jack': Insertion of something the author likes as one of the character's likes. I wasn't all that fond of Jason or Bailey, the two most main characters, but I thought that Henry and Trent were both very interesting and well-written.
For the most part, this book is pretty well written. The author's style still needs to mature a bit, but the second and third books in this series are already much better.
All in all, it's something to read when you're bored and have nothing else to do. It won't leave you with much, but it's sort of fun while it lasts. I, for one, really hope that the author writes more books in a few years-- maybe she'll be able to avoid the pitfalls 'The Magickers' series falls into by then.
A Wonderful Series that Bests Harry Potter.......2004-04-11
I picked this up at the bookstore near my home because I always buy a book and thought this one would be, at the very least, interesting. From the first line, I was hooked. Emily Drake's expert writing leads you on a marvelous adventure in which magic is very, very different than JK Rowling's world.
Another thing I love is that the characters are very well developed. Piece by piece you are offered insights into the lives of Bailey, Ting, Jason, Trent, Henry, and the rest of the delightful cast. Everyone has a story to tell, and Emily Drake expertly tells them. A marvelous series in which magick can be harnessed by using ordinary stones like amethyst, Ms. Drake leads us on a wonderful adventure into a new and unique branch of fantasy and magic.

the story of a wonderful brother.......2000-06-03
This is the true story of a wonderful Christian brother - Harry Lee. A man who lived in the times of the cultural revolution in China, who at one time lived quite well and had servants, but who later would lose everything that he loved including his sister and brother. And his Russian refugee sweetheart Nadia would flee the country. It is the story of a man who unjustly spent 7 years in a prison cell no wider than you could spread your arms along with three other men, who slept every night sardine style with a toilet bucket by his head. He had only a bowl of rice a day, which he would put water into to give it the illusion of fullness. When the propaganda announcements came over the loudspeaker everyday he would sing his Christian hymns under the noise so that even those who knew him wondered if he had become a communist. This is the story of man who would then spend another four years on a prison farm after being released from prison - a prison farm that killed his brother. This is the story of a man of great conviction and courage who waited his entire life for the Lord to bless him and use him.
But the story does not end where the book ends. After graduating from seminary - dream that he waited his entire adult life to realize, he met his old sweetheart Nadia again, but she was married to another man - she had received no word from Harry and had decided to get on with her life. But as only God knows why, her husband died and after her grieving was completed she married Harry Lee. So finally, after years of waiting, he was reunited with his lost love. But alas, during one of his never-ceasing speaking engagements, Harry became ill, and he shortly thereafter passed from this life to the next.
I will always remember Harry Lee as a softspoken gentleman who bore the marks on his body from the nightly beatings that he suffered at the hands of the communists. I will remember him as the missionary who happened to come into town when I was befriending some teenage Chinese Acrobats and that he gave me tracts to give to them. But what I remember most is that he was the epitome of what we all strive to become in our walks with the Lord. May his story richly bless you.

Customer Reviews:
Worst B-Tech book I have ever read.......2005-01-10
Blaine Lee Pardoe has only done his homework on half of the forces at work in this book... the protagonist half. His understanding of Clan personalities and abilities (including techs) could not be farther from accurate. I can't believe this was included in the main Battletech history line.
In one instance, a Jade Falcon tech completely ingnores the orders of his superior officer (who just happens to be the commander of the most prestigious unit in the Falcon Touman) and refuses to repair his officer's 'mech, causing a misfire during the hero's drop and beginning the absurd string of events that loses the battle for his side and wins the day for the main characters. All of this was done because the tech decided the loss of the planet and end of his clan's invasion was worth his punishment, which he believed would be as bad as a transfer. Blaine obviously did not read up on Clan customs or that tech would have known he could be serverely chastized or killed when Raville (the officer) tested his mech out before running it into combat. Oh, wait. The commander of the Falcon Guards, who won his spot out of tactical thinking and utilizing battle proven superior strategies must have "forgotten" to test his mech before fighting a battle for the planet. Yeah.
Supposedly, the Jade Falcons invade the Lyran Alliance and win some battles, which is hard to believe since only one actual battle in the storyline can claim a victory, or even close to a victory to the Falcons. This great force that conqured so many worlds in the months before the book's timeline began did nothing but lose incredible advantages and surrender throughout the course of the story. I mean, you would think that these guys have never fired a weapon in their lives before, let alone piloted a battlemech.
General Christifori's and Steiner's personalities are portrayed rather accurately and the dialogue is slightly above average. The writing style itself is easy to read and free flowing. Sadly enough, it's the events in the book and the misportrayal of every antagonist that ruins it and disgusts me. It is very much like playing a video game on ultra-easy with an invincibility cheat code activated. There's no actual conflict since you never once doubt that the hero will win the day by some act of God miracle.
Worst book ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-04-14
I really enjoyed all books Archer Christifori was in until this one. This really doesn't potray the awesome work that the author can uaually pump out. This Is a toatly unrealistic book ranging from 3 regiments up from usual one they had in the other two books about Archer. They really should've coutinued with the entriguing civil war instead of this boring topic of the falcon invasion. Much better stuff can be read {like the warrior series.} Read this only if you have $...sitting around or don't care about realistic settings and numbers. Only read if in dire need of Battletch serries or else skip this piecie of bad litirture.
Archer's Return.......2003-03-06
When I bought this book, I had recently finished reading Measure Of A Hero which tells us how Archer Christifori got involved in the civil war. What attracted me to these books was Archer's character. This book brought some serious issues to light and Archer was definitly the person to deal with them. This book also brings forth the tragedy of war. Archer knew that going in and he also knew that he could be one of those casalties. But they did it because they had to. The action is always there and the book keys in on not only Archer's character, but also Adam Steiner. By the end of the book, We see changes in the attitudes on both sides. They all learn to respect each other and some become friends even though they are on opposite sides of he civil war.
Operation Audacity: A great book........2002-09-04
When I bought this book I just completed reading the latest Mechwarrior book so I was apprihensive in purchasing another battletech book right away but when I read the back cover and saw that had General Archer in the story line I went ahead and bought the book. So Once I started reading the book I couldn't set down the book. I was very impressed with the Operation Audacity. This book starts off with bringing back one of the more colorful characters that has been written into the FedCom civil war story line. General Archer is back and kicking the Jade Falcons out of the Lyran Alliance. The book read really well and flowed through smoothly and most of all it wasn't boring like the Mechwarrior series books. This has been a great book. This book has my highest recommandations.
Acher is back!.......2002-07-03
Archer is back and this time hes whipin up on the Jade Falcons! But he can only do that with the help of Adam Steiner, a very loyal Steiner general.I could never put down this book, the action goes from start to end. i realy recomend getting this book.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
When a tree is felled, the wood is green and is easy to cut, split, shave and shape. As it dries, the wood shrinks and hardensQand it becomes vastly more difficult to work. In the old days, wood-workers relied on the ease with which green wood could be worked to make the parts they needed, and on the way wood shrinks to hold these parts together. These old ways have almost been lost, but are revived here for the modern woodworker. Make a Chair From a Tree is a lively and informative introduction to the old ways of splitting and shaping wood straight from the tree to make a light and beautiful, yet rugged, chair. Author John Alexander presents a complete guide to making this elegantly simple chair. He tells you how to fell a tree, split suitable pieces from it and shape those pieces into the parts of the chair, how to finish it, and how to weave a bark seat. Each step is carefully described and thoroughly illustrated with drawings and photographs. 130 pages. 9" x 9". Soft cover.

Good in general but room for improvement.......2002-01-24
The book is targeted to newbies, which is the reason why I bought it, and found it really interesting and containing lots of elements I never thought about regarding woodworking.
It also contains plenty of illustrations with explanations, although they sometimes don't appear to be in sync.
It has a project section but, since it was not written by the author, it does not match very well with the content of the book.
Anyway, if you just want to have a general understanding of working with wood, this book will be of help.

In 2004, the EPA warned physicians to be on the lookout for both respiratory and neurological symptoms from mold contaminated schools and homes. The latest medical science shows 1 in 4 children are sensitive to low levels of mold toxins. Is your child one of these? Now a "top gun" physician & medical innovator teams up with an accomplished scientist & master builder to clearly explain how even small amounts of hidden indoor mold-produced biotoxins can subtly impact youth behavior, emotions, health and learning. In their easy-to-read prophetic book, they offer solutions based on the latest medical and scientific research that work for both bodies and buildings...restoring quality of life to children and parents. Similar to an oil change for your car, our mold toxin Detox program cleans away contaminants in internal fluids in a way that quickly restores children, adolescents, and even adults to health and contentment. Gary Rosen, Ph.D., C.I.E. -- A biochemist, trained under a Nobel Prize winner, who has authored numerous advanced text books on mold. Dr. Rosen has performed over 1000 mold inspections. James Schaller, M.D., C.M.R. -- A prolific clinical and research physician publishing in 16 areas of medicine, with three books on mold illness.

Essential Information for Restoring Health and Healthy Indoor Environments.......2006-04-04
When Traditional Medicine Fails, a new release by two professionals working on the cutting edge of mold research, treatment and remediation, is an excellent overview of the toxic health effects of mold in schools, as well as in home and work environments. This very readable book incorporates the latest research on frequently misdiagnosed health conditions caused by mold, the typical symptoms, and the treatments effective in restoring health to affected individuals. Checklists, pictures and clear instructions help the reader to recognize and appropriately remediate indoor mold problems. This book is an excellent introduction to the ground-breaking research previously published in Mold Warriors, written by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker and co-author of this new book, Dr. James Schaller. Dr. Gary Rosen is a leading expert on mold investigation and remediation, and author of many books on the subject, including sister publications, Mold and Mold Toxin Remediation, and Locating Hidden Toxic Mold, soon to be released. All of these books underscore the importance of recognizing indoor molds as a serious health threat and the necessity of effectively remediating "sick" buildings in order to restore and preserve the health of their occupants. Having done extensive research on this subject from a variety of sources, I believe that this book brings to light essential information for persons interested in or struggling with unexplained, chronic, or medically illusive health conditions.
when traditional medicine fails..........2006-03-25
A very informative book, explains the problems, their consequences and solutions. Makes you more aware of the environment we live in.
When Traditional Medicine Fails.......2006-03-19
I got quick results after reading When Traditional Medicine Fails. I read the entire book in an evening. It is only about 150 pages and includes many color pictures that I found extremely useful.
My kids are now healthy after following the book's Quick Detox recommendations; and I estimate that I saved over $10,000 on mold remediation because I was able to do most of the mold remediation
work myself by following the clear advice in the book.
Enlightened me about mold illness.......2006-03-19
I clearly had a mold problem and knew (or thought I knew) that 2 of my 3 kids were most likely sick from mold. My husband had been going round and round with the insurance company who refused to pay to have the problem fixed. After reading "When Traditional Medicine Fails," we now understand the terminology involved in both mold testing and mold remediation and were able to prepare the documents needed to get the insurance company to act. The cost to repair was over $10,000 but the insurance company paid 100% less our $1,000 deductible. There is more to getting healthy from mold toxins exposure than just medical treatment. Unless you get rid of the source of the toxins, I don't think you can ever expect a return to health. After the remediation one of my children returned to health almost immediately, but the younger child needed 2-3 weeks of medical treatment and is now 100%. But both children continue to be quite sensitive to mold, which as I now understand, may continue for the rest of their lives.
An Eye-Opening Book on the largely unknown health effects from mold.......2006-03-18
Our home suffered extensive roof damage due to Hurricane Wilma, which swept through South Florida last year. Plenty of water came in through the ceiling, running down numerous walls. We tried drying the house as best as we could, but with no electricity or air conditioning for a week, there was only so much we could do.
About a month after the hurricane, our kids started showing allergy-like symptoms. I also noticed that I was having frequent headaches and generally felt run down and fatigued. My wife took our kids to their pediatrician, who prescribed allergy medications and testing for them. The medications helped only a little. Due to the significant amount of water we had in our home, I began wondering if our health problems were due to mold. So, when my kids' next doctor's appointment came, I took them. I asked the doctor if their symptoms--as well as my headaches--could be from mold. He pretty much laughed off the suggestion. He simply renewed my kids' allergy medications and recommended that I see a neurologist.
Then, I read When Traditional Medicine Fails. Wow! What an eye opener! I discovered that mold can cause not only the symptoms my kids and I were suffering from, but also plenty of other health effects. Plus, I learned that many traditional physicians are simply unknowledgeable about mold-related health issues. The book also tells you how can solve many mold problems on your own. Our problem was too extensive to fix by ourselves, but with the book's help, I was able to hire a qualified remediator who followed EPA protocols. A couple weeks after the remediation, our health problems were gone!

A good beginner's book to the IJJ deck........2001-03-21
This is a beginner's book to people who wish to read cards with the IJJ tarot deck - a traditional deck similar to the tarot of Marseille (which means the numbered cards just carry the appropriate number of of the suit's symbol, rather than a picture as in the Rider deck).
The book starts with a good introduction, which explains what a tarot deck is and tells about it's history. The introduction is much more solid that than of most beginners' books nowadays.
Chapter II covers the major arcana in the standard "Tarot 101" format - two pages per card, one with the card's picture and another with a description of the card, the card's meaninig when straight, and the card's meaning when upside down. The meanings are mainly keywords, which I think are not terribly accurate but are good enough for beginners.
Chapter III explains how to spread the cards using the Celtic Cross.
Chapter IV covers the minor arcana. Court cards are explained in the same format as the major arcana, while the numbered cards are given 5-6 lines each with just meanings. Again, the meanings are mostly keywords.
Chapter V explains several other spreads - a seven cards past/present/future spread, a complex name based spread, three overcomplicated, badly explained, and rather useless spreads (56 cards horseshoe, 54 cards royal, and 7th card), and a nice Gypsy spread.
A bibliography is included, which I think is of little use - it includes this book itself, along with several other books without a hint regarding which material was taken from which book and why.
This is an average beginner's book - it covers the basic needed material needed in a good fashion, but doesnt do a great job of it.
