EXACTLY WHAT DID THE CAPTAIN HEAR? For Century Airlines Captain Jake Adams, it's been another routine flight. Well, as close to what can be considered routine given circumstances of late. For a long period, Adams has approached a specific spot of the ocean with dread....been plagued with physical painss....and has encountered numerous mechanical problems with his aircraft. And, at the fear of sounding certifiable to his peers, he has neglected to mention any of the strange radio signals he picks up on his headset as the plane soars high over the Atlantic ocean, just south of Newfoundland's Grand Banks. Dit, dit, dit...dat.dat, dat....dit, did, dit... The faint, almost ghostly call is instantly recognizable: "SOS" followed by three distinct call letters: "MGY." Jake's heart races when he hears the signal....it's not a coincidence as the deep ocean that they pass over contains the grave of the legendary RMS Titanic. Jake's connection to the lost liner cannot be a coincidence as the incidents grow increasingly stronger with each of his transatlatic flights. And then....the dreams start. What is his connection to the lost liner and its First Officer William Murdoch? Titanic is, indeed, calling to Jake. But what does she want? And will her secrets be revealed before Jake and his crew, as well as the passengers on his plane meet the same fate as the legendary liner did over eight decades before them? Calling is a masterfully written novel that will dazzle the reader with the splendor of the long-lost Edwardian era. Author Diana Bristow meticulously researched the politics of the era, as well as customs and etiquette to produce this page-turner of a novel. The story cuts between present day Century Airlines and 1912 to capture a glimpse of the demise of Titanic. The plot is riveting, weaving historical fiction with psychic undertones and reincarnation. Titanic Calling is an adventure for the Titanic enthusiast or the casual reader!

5 out of 5 stars The king makes the great journey.......2002-10-17

Shef is now co-king of england, and has brought peace and prosperity to his land. He is summoned to go north, and to make a great journey around the northlands. The plot thickens in this book, and builds on the first. The charachters develop even more in this book, and continue to do so in the final book of the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Old Favorites.......2002-04-05

I love this trilogy, from the start of book one to the end of book three, the historical aspects are pointed out in a way that fits as part of the story and they don't overthrow the plot, lending the books a very authoritative tone. The Characters are great, (Brand is one of my favorites) and there's plenty of action. What I like best about these books is that Harrison really makes you feel inside the story, the way he handles the characters attitudes towards each other and their surroundings really makes you feel like you're right with them weather it's Anglo-Saxon England, Scandinavia, The Frankish Empire, Muslum Spain or what's left of Rome. As for character development, Harrison has a great way of using the third-person point of view in a way that can convey things unknown to the characters yet at the same time the tone of the narrative is flavored with the particular character's personality, culture and view of their surroundings, helping the reader understand more fully the motives and inhibitions of the people he describes. I read these back in high school and loved them then as much I still do now.

4 out of 5 stars On the searching road........2000-11-03

This alternate history is a sequel of "The hammer and the Cross", starts with Shef going on a two level quest. The explicit one is to deter the Ragnarsons raids onto the British coasts. The second quest is more or less imposed to him, by Gods or fate or destiny, Shef alternatively complies or resist to it. In this quest new characters come to his help and tie their destiny to his. Shef's journey touches all Norse's world, their myths, legends and beliefs are shown in a thrilling story. The first book of the saga shows an accurate picture of early Middle Ages, this one starts to create a different alternate reality, evolving distinctly from new facts introduced by Harrison. The Lance Order appears in this volume and will grow step by step as an important element in the saga. Finally, the confrontation with the Ragnarsons, comes to an end somewhat abruptly without freeing all the previous mounting tension. A valuable continuation of the saga, I keep looking forward for the next and final step.

5 out of 5 stars Killer follow-up to an awesome start.......1999-04-29

After reading "The Hammer and the Cross" I couldn't wait for the second installment. The wait was well worth it. Harrison followed up his truly excellent beginning with an equally impressive and exciting novel. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the characters develop and change over the course of the story. Harrison once again delves into history and presents an exciting "what if" story line. Definate thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars A great book, very believable and well constructed........1997-01-02

This book is a sequel to The Hammer and the Cross. I have not read the earlier book, but people speak very highly of it, and this sequel deserves just as much praise. It's an alternate history with supernatural elements involving Viking, Christian, and other religions. It is carefully and intricately constructed with interesting technology developments (for the so-called Dark Ages) and different cultures.

I do have a problem with the description on the back jacket of the book (also repeated as the Amazon.Com description), because I think it's not at all accurate. The jacket identifies the Knights of the Lance as Shef's chief enemies, but in most of the book his chief enemies are Sigurth Snake-Eye and his brothers. The Knights of the Lance don't play much of a role in this book, though it looks like they will in the next one

'Doctor Who and the Silurians' is adapted by its original author, Malcolm Hulke. This novelisation varies from the original story, principally by adding more detail. However, don't be surprised if not all the details tally!

The Doctor has accepted a post as UNIT's scientific adviser in exchange for the use of facilities to repair the TARDIS. He and Liz Shaw are summoned by the Brigadier to Wenley Moor, where strange things are happening at a nuclear research station. There are mysterious power losses, nervous breakdowns, and UNIT's assistance is sought after one scientist is killed and his pot holing companion goes mad.

There is something in the caves under Wenley Moor, and it is not friendly...

One of the earliest Target novelisations, author Malcolm Hulke obviously takes a fairly free hand in retelling this story. It is a recognition that what works well on TV won't necessarily work well in a book. This book is not simply an adaptation, but a reworking of the story for a different medium.

                    Book Description

The Bar Hemingway is probably one of the most important bars in the world today. Forbes Digital Tool Internet magazine cited it as 'The World's Greatest Bar, 1998' and its Head Bartender as 'The World's Greatest Bartender'. The author was to be cited in 2001 again by Forbes as the Greatest Bartender in the World. In 1983 I had obtained the title of No.2 in the world (Martini Grand Prix World Cocktail Competition) for my knowledge in cocktails and alcohols, and had coveted the premier position ever since. Le Figaro newspaper cited the Head Bartender as one of the 20 most creative people in France, comparing him with architects, dancers, chefs and writers. The Times called the Bar Hemingway the best kept secret in Paris, and compliments for our service have been bestowed upon us from all over the world. In 2001 Le Figaro stated that the Hemingway produced the best Dry Martini there is.

The story of the Bar Hemingway begins in 1921, when it was decided to create a room for alcoholic refreshment in the Cambon Wing. Le Café Parisien was designed in the art deco style of the period by Picot. The Head Bartender was to be Frank Meier, and he would receive the world's elite: Sir Winston Churchill, President Theodore Roosevelt, Noël Coward, Scott Fitzgerald and Cole Porter, to name but a few. It was at this time, incidentally, that Frank Meier invented the Royal Highball (a marvellously refreshing drink made with cognac, strawberries and champagne) for the King of Spain.

Just opposite the bar was a very small 'salon de correspondance' with lovely wooden walls. This became the ladies' waiting room, where ladies waiting for their husbands would while away the 'minutes'. (Ladies, at this time, were not allowed in the bars.) In 1936 the principal bar was transformed to receive both sexes, and at the same time a second bar was created. This was 'Le Petit Bar', over which Bernard 'Bertin' Azimont was to preside until his retirement in 1975. The little bar was to become Ernest Hemingway's favourite haunt. He had discovered the Ritz Paris in 1925 after meeting Scott Fitzgerald in the 'Dixies Bar', a drinking hole for ex-patriot American artists and writers. The Dixies no longer exists, but Le Petit Bar, now known as the Bar Hemingway, continues to thrive. Hemingway adopted the bar as his Head Quarters and spent many hours there planning his strategies for the horse races at Auteuil. He would even, according to A.E. Hotchner's book Papa Hemingway, pick up the bets of Frank, George, Bertin and the other bartenders for the day's races. This was done under the profound inspiration of Bertin's Bloody Marys.

Ernest Hemingway, with his friend Colonel David Bruce (later to become the ambassador of the United States), were the first Americans to be served in the bar after the war. After hailing Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare and Co., the writer made a B-line for the cellars of the Ritz Paris. He was greeted and brought into the room now known as the Bar Hemingway (named after a suggestion from the bartender, Claude Decobert, who had served Hemingway on several occasions), where he downed 51 Dry Martinis. Incidentally, I often served Mr. Curley, in the line of American Ambassadors to have known Hemingway, at the Restaurant Au Petit Riche in 1989, but was never able to win him over to the benefits of cocktail drinking. Perhaps he too had the haunting memory of all those Martinis with Hemingway!

In 1962, Charles Ritz decided to create a third bar on the Vendôme side of the Hotel. Named The Lounge Bar, this serves an enormous daytime clientele and excels in afternoon tea and scones.

The focus on the Vendôme Bar and the absence of Bertin in the late 1970s led the Petit Bar to meander like the rivers that Ernest Hemingway had once fished upon. Its activity eventually came to a halt in the middle of the 1980s and it was used for special parties only.

With the support of Jack Hemingway, who was very favorable to its project, the Ritz Paris pushed very hard for its re-opening, and in 1994 finally offered me the opportunity to become the bartender that I had always wanted to be. (My first letter asking for a position at the Ritz Paris had been in 1979!) The Ritz Paris and I worked extremely hard to create 'The Event', the opening of the Bar Hemingway, which happily coincided with the 50 years of peace since Hemingway had liberated the bars of the Ritz Paris.

We did it! I can honestly say that I never doubted that the Bar Hemingway would be a success. In fact, in 1998 it was decided to make the bar bigger to cope with the incredible volume of new visitors. Better still (and this has to be the greatest compliment a management can offer the Head Bartender), the Ritz Paris and its entire team let me and my Number Two, Johann Burgos, design the new room. (I even found the old espadon or swordfish in the Charles Ritz Grill Room. It was no longer in use and few people ever saw it. I took it down and hung it in the Bar Hemingway.) I was pretty jolly pleased with my latest acquisition until one day, upon arrival at the Ritz Paris, I found that my (well, I had caught it!) espadon was now hanging upon the Espadon Restaurant, high above the door on the Vendôme side. I felt a little like Ernest Hemingway might have done had he ever experienced 'the fish that got away'!

                    5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2004-01-10

I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend New Year at the Ritz in Paris. The absolute highlight was the time spent in the Hemingway Bar. I never understood the meaning of serendipity until I found it, and to find there was a cocktail named after it when I did was more than the icing on the cake. Colin and his colleagues are not only masters of their trade, but also charming, witty, knowledgeable, humurous in the extreme. The perfect barmen. I bought the book as a souvenir and have been unable to put it down since opening at the first page. This is a must for any pretender to Colin's throne. Unfortunately, I suspect his abdication from the position of best bartender in the world will be a long time coming. The Hemingway Bar is the best kept secret in Paris and long may it remain so. Ssssshhh, don't tell anyone.

5 out of 5 stars The Worlds Best Bartender.......2003-11-26

I have had the enjoyable opportunity to share many cocktails with Colin, and am extremely thrilled that he has published a book of some of the great cocktails that he serves to his guests at the Ritz in Paris.

While this book does have a "small" collection of recipes for standard cocktials (Mojito, Whiskey Sour, Pina Colada, Daiquiri...), it is a very small list, and simply represents some of the standard cocktails the way that Colin makes them in his bar. This book instead shines in the collection of cocktails that appear in Chapter 5 : "Cocktails and the stories that belong to them". Here Colin shares his recipes for the "Ritz Pimm's", "Miss Bonde", "The Georges", "Serendipiti", and many others which Mr. Field shares not only the recipe, but some of the story surrounding its birth.

The "Bar Hemingway" is indeed a unique bar in the heart of Paris, just as Colin Field is a unique bartender. It should then come as no great surprise that his first cocktail book reflects this uniqueness in ways that will make it a favorite of many.

5 out of 5 stars The Coctails of the Ritz Paris book review.......2003-09-08

As a former bartender at a private country club, I can fully appreciate Mr. Field's work and position at the Ritz Paris. His book is a vey informative and enjoyable read. I had the pleasure to live at the Ritz for two weeks in 1981 after graduation from college, and look forward to visiting again soon to see the completed renovations that were in progress when I was there. The book sure makes me yearn to return to the Ritz as soon as I can. When I do, I will be sure to drop by the bar to say "hello" to a very accomplished barman!

5 out of 5 stars A very very sensible cookbook........2005-01-06

I love this cookbook. I received it for Christmas and it's great. I've been cooking ever since! I love all of the recipes; it turns bitter vegetables into tasty treats and makes sweets not all that bad. I advise every student planning on going to college to buy this book. It's sucha good book! I just got done making the French Toast, I had no idea French toast contained egg!

                          5 out of 5 stars delicious food.......2004-04-02

This is a fantastic book; I've had it for many years and I use it all the time. The author makes simple recipes out of totally ordinary ingredients. She finds new twists for common ingredients, that bring out all the flavor and make it exciting to try things out. The recipes are so approacheable, because they're so easy. You'll keep using it, because the food is so tasty.

5 out of 5 stars Great starter cookbook!.......2004-02-18

What a lifesaver to be able to pick up a book for my son going off to college that was exactly right for his needs. He had no idea about cooking terms, shelf life for foods, how to shop, clean up or what equipment to use. I especially liked the idea that there was a list of how to fix mistakes, which we are sure will happen! Hopefully he will read about how to avoid wasting leftovers. This book is perfect, geared for anyone with no previous cooking experience, and is great for anyone on a tight budget or those cooking for one. He liked the minute meals, since he has no patience to wait for food to cook, and would naturally go for frozen or junk food. With this book there is hope he will eat something healthy.

                          5 out of 5 stars A must.......2002-02-12

Great tips and ideas for quick, variated and savory everyday diner fixing and lunch box. It is my cooking reference.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent book for clueless cooks.......2001-08-03

I love this book! I'm in college, and although I consider myself to be an experienced cook, this book rocks! Peltosaari has included tips for food storage, using leftovers, shelf life, and cooking terms in addition to the many easy recipes. All of the recipes are economical, nutritious, and delicious. If you don't even know how to make scrambled eggs, or if you're on a tight budget (like me!) then this is the book for you!

                                Book Description

From the medieval monastic diet to the continuing tradition of college gaudies, Oxford's culinary traditions are characteristic and colorful. Politically dangerous menus, strange and wonderful ingredients, High Table etiquette, private breakfast parties, Oxford cellars, unusual dinner summonses, elaborate college feasts, bizarre prandial processions, curious gastronomic rites, college ales, and the Oxford Symposium on Food History—these are just some of the items that make up this glorious, illustrated anthology. Drawn from Oxford University sources ranging from 1282 to the present, Oxford Food also contains about 100 separately indexed recipes supplied by college chefs, "invisible women," heads of colleges, bursars, and fellows. Co-published with the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

                                        Book Description

The exceptional beauty of Pairpoint glass lamps has been cherished since their origin in New Bedford, Massachusetts, between 1907 and 1929. Now, for the first time, the complete range and diversity of these magnificent, softly glowing works of art are shown together in a useful source and reference. More than 200 full-color photographs, excerpts from company catalogs, and advertisements detail the designs, shade styles and sizes, and serial numbers of the lamps. A rarity guide is included. The book features chapters on the beautiful variations of shade styles, including puffy, ribbed, and scenic; and chandelier, non-electrified, and floor lamps.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Pairpoint Lamps.......2001-02-15

This is an excellent pictorial book showcasing the beautiful Pairpoint lamps. However, I felt that there could have been more information given. For example no manufacturing dates were given for any of the lamps. The company was in operation for many years and it would be nice to know which lamps were earlier examples, later examples, etc. Also, no sizes for lamp bases are mentioned. I was interested in a particular lamp shade and have no idea how tall the appropriate lamp base would have been. There is a rarity scale of 1 - 3, but it is difficult to understand. Which is best? exceptionally rare, unusually rare, or choice? Maybe an explanation of "choice" would be helpful. Is "choice" the most desirable or least? The book itself contains over 200 wonderful photos and several pages of original ads. It would also have been helpful to be given some idea of values of the lamps. I know that they are quite collectible, but no information was given on how or where to have one appraised.

                                          Book Description

More than 570 Pairpoint lamps with their distinctive glass shades are shown in this and the companion volume that comprise the catalog. They represent a broad sample of the production of Pairpoint lamps from 1900 to the early 1930s. The most remarkable feature of the catalog is that so many of the pages are hand-colored with watercolors, having been painted by the original factory decorators. This practice occurred at the factory when orders for the lamps were slow.

Excellent as far as it goes, this 100-odd page book is actually a reprint of an exhibition catalogue rather than a literary or reference work in its own right. The text is informative but - apart from a couple of introductory essays - relates only to the specific pieces referred to in the catalogue and the exhibition it describes (at the Peabody). It is not intended to provide a guide to the criteria you should look for when buying antique Chinese furniture.

Most of the Chinese furniture available today - if one is not buying at auction- will almost certainly be that bought from rural villages and towns in China. The furniture will be old, dirty, and gernerally pretty rough before a dealer/reseller cleans it up and then sells it to you for too much or as something it is not. This book can tell one so much about the furniture they are likely to purchase. What woods are used and is the wood the dealer is purporting the furniture is made from consistent with the wood available at the time the furniture was supposedly made. Is it really zitan (probably not) or just stained rosewood. There are many books on Chinese furniture, some good and some bad. This one is good.

Robert Vivian's prose is so creatively lush, unexpected and unpredictable, you can hardly believe the "stories" he relates (he calls them essays) are based wholly on personal experiences. They read more like poetic fictions, and yet the style is quite accessible -- nothing self-consciously obscure or tediously "literary." If this is how he treats non-fiction, I can only imagine the delight of reading his fictions.

Robert Vivian has taken the personal essay to new heights, expanding poetic language into a deeply inspirational journey into the human experience. If ever you believed the essay genre to be dull and pedantic, Vivian will change your mind forever with his gorgeous language and important insights. The essay is boring no longer
