Book Description

A succ's de scandale when it was published in England in 1963, Up the Junction is a high-voltage, gorgeously visceral collection of portraits of working-class women's lives, finally restored to print

Nell Dunn's scenes of London life, as it was lived in the early Sixties in the industrial slums of Battersea, have few parallels in contemporary writing. The exuberant, uninhibited, disparate world she found in the tired old streets and under the railway arches is recaptured in these closely linked sketches; and the result is pure alchemy. In the space of 120 perfect pages, we witness clip-joint hustles, petty thieving, candid sexual encounters, casual birth and casual death. She has a superb gift for capturing colloquial speech and the characters observed in these pages convey that caustic, ironic, and compassionate feeling for life, in which a turn of phrase frequently contains startling flashes of poetry. Battersea, that teeming wasteland of brick south of the Thames, has found its poet in Nell Dunn and Up the Junction is her touchingly truthful and timeless testimonial to it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hard hitting. Made me understand the environment Punk Rock came from........2006-05-05

The previous reviewer has done an excellent job of describing the milieu in which the episodes take place. I say "episodes" because it's more like a video catching bits and pieces of the life. There's very little narrative interruption or comment.

Considering that Dunn had a background in journalism I approached the meaning of the episodes by considering the details and images she used. In each episode and in sum total they provide alot to consider and draw meaning from.

It's a very bleak view. But it really stayed with me. As a fan of Punk Music this book made me better understand what the Clash were singing about in 1977 or thereabouts when they had hits with "City of the Dead", "White Riot", and "White man at the Hammersmith Palais."

2 out of 5 stars "She was a scrubber all her life.".......2004-10-16

When "Up The Junction" first appeared in the 60s, it was considered a daring and explosively honest book. Reading it now, 40 years after its publication, "Up The Junction" seems dated. The book is a collection of scenes--you can't really use the term 'short stories' here. The scenes take place in London and concern a group of characters. Each scene exposes a moment in the lives of the characters, and these scenes are relentlessly bleak, raw, and depressing. For example, there's a scene with three young girls as they spend an evening out on the town with some rowdy young men. There's one scene with a character who is visiting a back-street abortionist. These young girls are products--and also victims--of the 60s Sexual Revolution in the slums. There's one thing, and one thing only to look forward to, and that is marriage, but in the meantime, there are hurried, gropy encounters on smelly mattresses with men they don't like, and these encounters lead to some very unpleasant consequences.

I found the scenes and the characters rather vague and difficult to follow. Clearly, the author covered new stylistic ground here, but it's not exactly pleasant ground. These pages are packed with desperate people--mothers giving birth to dead babies who are flushed down the toilet, an abortion that goes wrong, and families who pawn their furniture on a regular basis. Several racial references are jarring, and while we understand these do not reflect the attitude of the author--and reflect the attitudes of her characters--these racial comments are harsh and archaic. The writing is loaded with dialect and slang which will prove confusing to the non-British reader. The book has a place in a study of the development of style, as it was produced while some much of the 'angry young man' fiction emerged from Britain. While the author may have captured the essence of life in these London streets, there was too little focus and too little character development to engage my attention--displacedhuman

                    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-01-24

Boy #11, Hiroki Sugimura, is continuing his escapade to meet up with Girl #8, Kayoko Kotohiki. Unfortunately for him, he finds Boy #4, Toshinori Oda AKA "Froggy", who considers himself above the rest of the "vulgar" classmates.

Also, Boy #15, Shuuya Nanhara, finds himself in the lighthouse on the northeast side of the island. A group of 6 girls inhabits it also. One of the girls, Girl #9, Yuko Sakaki, witnessed the death of Tatsumichi Ooki, and believes Shuuya is a demon boy. She wants him dead, and she may have her way.

This was quite and excellent volume. The art is, as always, fantastic, and the adapted dialogue was fine. This volume also showed people's fear, hatred, sadness, and regret. Full of emotion and hard-hitting action, this is a volume you will not want to miss.

4 out of 5 stars A TINY CIRCLE OF SANE FRIENDS.......2006-04-12

The staff wielding martial arts master Hiroki continues to try to track down his friend Kayoko as around him the remaining contestants of the Program continue to be whittled down to a handful. As he searches he finds himself in a confrontation with the aristocratic buffoon Toshinori Oda, who is too smart for his own good, and on top of that, is brandishing a pistol. Will the good-hearted Hiroki liquidate him or will he once again fall for the puppydog eyes and crocodile tears that could get him killed? Meanwhile, Shuuya is being nursed back to health by a group of girls who have decided to sit the game out and find a way to disrupt the play. Of course, fighting against the Program is what Shuuya was made for, so plans are soon made to join up with other like-minded individuals. But there is a serpent in their midst in the form of Yuko Sakaki. Yuko mistakenly thinks that Shuuya is playing the game and hiding his true self, and she's lost it to such an extent that she actually sees him as a demon. What she sets in motion due to this belief might just destroy all of them!

This is the most hard-hitting volume of Battle Royale that I've read in a while. While some of the violence doesn't really make sense, when has violence EVER made sense? You can't really fault any of the characters for overreacting once the bullets start flying, because there's no telling what YOU would do in such a situation. There are some very tiny but refreshing moments of romance and comedy in this installment which show you a glimpse of what a normal life might be like if these chracters can survive. Refreshing but tragic. Masayuki Taguchi's clean but grotesque art continues to evoke feelings of revulsion and strange beauty even as the story moves along in a slow inevitable march of death.

Collectors of Mark Crilley's AKIKO comic books have long had a well-kept secret all to themsleves: the ongoing procession of fun features, pin-ups, and gags that has marched through the back pages of this series from the very start. AKIKO: FLIGHTS OF FANCY brings together these little-seen works for the first time. These rare pages represent some of Crilley's most creative work to date.

Every new book from Martha Stewart is cause for celebration, and with Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook, she returns to bring the pleasures of baking to readers at every level, from beginner to expert and beyond. A culinary compendium packed with more than 200 foolproof recipes for the best baked goods, Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook takes readers by the hand and guides them through the process of creating an irresistible variety of cakes, cookies, pies, tarts, breads, and much more.

This essential addition to every cook’s library is rich with tips, techniques, and the mouthwatering and stunning recipes for which Martha Stewart is so well known. Covering a delectable array of topics from simple to sophisticated, including biscuits, muffins, scones, cookies, layer cakes, specialty cakes, sweet and savory pies and tarts, and pastries and breads, she provides a dazzlingly delicious yet crystal-clear, vividly illustrated repertoire of recipes. There are cakes that are elegant enough for formal occasions, such as showers, weddings, and dinner parties, and basic favorites meant to be enjoyed every day and then passed down through the generations. Every chapter includes indispensable visual equipment glossaries and features vital make-ahead information and storage techniques. Organized for maximum clarity and practicality, the handbook also offers step-by-step how-to photographs that demystify even the most complex and nuanced techniques. These culinary building blocks will turn good bakers into great bakers, and make great bakers even better.

Filled with time-honored classics, such as Marble Cake with White-Chocolate Glaze, Apple Pie, Challah, Baba au Rhum, and Croissants, as well as lots of new surprises, Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook will be reached for again and again, no matter the season or occasion.

“Here, you will find the recipes and how-tos for the popovers you dream about, and for the simple crumb cake that you always want to whip up on Sunday morning, and for the double-chocolate brownie cookies that will make you a bigger hero with the after-school crowd, and for the citrus bars that you could only find in that little bakery that’s no longer under the same management. . . . Baking offers comfort and joy and something tangible to taste and savor. We all hope that these recipes provide you with years of pleasure.” —Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook presents the doyenne of the Better Way in tip-top form. Or rather, it offers the work of a dedicated team who, under Stewart's stewardship, has devised over 200 baking recipes for both savory and sweet treats, ranging from the traditional likes of buttermilk biscuits, gingersnaps, blueberry pie, bagels, and chocolate angel food cake, to the more novel pleasures of Sausage and Feta Hand Pies, Cherry Fragipane Gallete, Carrot-Ginger Cupcakes, and even the buttery-sugary to-die-for yeasted pastry called kouign amans. Also present and accounted-for are Stewartian showpieces like Mocha-Pistachio Wedding Cake.

The greatest virtue of the book, apart from the clarity of its recipes, lies in its organization: the chapters, which cover all baking stops, begin with relevant tips, followed by notes on equipment and techniques, all photo-illustrated. These set-ups supply context that maximizes the possibility of pleasurable, goof-free baking. Photo-illustrated how-to's in the formulas further the cause. A quibble is the absence in many of the recipe headnotes of descriptive material about the baked good they introduce--it's important to provide info on techniques and ingredients, as the headnotes do, but baking recipes in particular cry out for descriptions of what, for example, sfogliatelle (an Italian pastry), or lime-glazed cookies are. This said, the book is immensely appealing and will excite as well as instruct a wide range of bakers, from the would-be to the accomplished. --Arthur Boehm

I gave this book as a gift to an avid baker and she loved it. I can't wait to try out the recipes. The pictures in the book are very helpful too.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook, but not a true handbook.......2007-09-12

Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook is an extremely well produced cookbook for bakers. There is excellent advice on baking equipment as well as technique. My only complain about the introductory section with this general information is that it is too brief. From there, it's straight into recipes. They are loosely categorized in chapters for Simple Baked Good, Cookies, Cakes, Pies (including tarts, cobblers, and twists), Yeasted Baked Goods, and Pastries. There were some odd omissions including chocolate chip cookies and a classic chocolate cake. I realize that neither is difficult to find elsewhere but I would have expected to see both presented here. All of the recipes are very well written with clear concise language. The finished dishes are shown in photographs of the highest caliber.

My biggest complaint is that this is more of a cookbook than a true handbook. While there are certainly tips and advice, it is not comprehensive and it is assumed that the reader knows many basic techniques already. Unfortunately for this beginner, that wasn't the case and I had to find another book to help me learn some of the building block skills that every baker must have. I would expect a true handbook to offer more in this regard. Having said that, this is an outstanding cookbook that includes some useful information and advice. I have no problem recommending the book to anyone who understands that this is not a comprehensive "how to" guide.

Well what can one say about Martha. Coming from Australian and not knowing much about Martha Stewart I tuned in to her show on the How to channel on cable TV in Australia. I was blown away by Martha and how she could do almost anything. I purchased her Baking handbook after it was previewed on the show and awaited it's arrival with much anticipation and joy and this book has not disappointed in any way. Every recipe I have tried has turned out perfectly

I'm not much of a baker so I really appreciate this book being very thorough in presenting fundamentals by using photos and text. The recipes are well written and easy to follow. The overall quality of the paper, pictures and recipe selection is excellent. I highly recommend this book for beginners and novices.

An outdoor space is a room with a view-anything from a family garden or an exposed roof terrace to a tiny balcony. These spaces often present a challenge to the decorator because of their exposure to weather, their limited size, and their unusual shape. This affordable book offers countless ideas for creating gorgeous outdoor spaces as gathering places for friends and family, or as soothing hideaways.

From assessing space to lighting, furniture, and planting, every page is filled with solutions. Full-color photographs, useful checklists, and three actual garden "makeovers" show how any outside space can be transformed into lovely extension of the home.

This is a book of good-looking and well-designed outdoor spaces adjacent to good-looking houses. The things - plants, furniture, outdoor cooking gear - that the owners/designers have placed in the outdoor places is expensive, and it does look great. One admires the scenes. So it's more of a small-scale coffee-table book than a how-to guide.

Pufnstuf, Witchiepoo, Bugaloo, Hoo Doo--nonsense words to all but the initiated. And who are the initiated? Let's just say they're adults of a certain age who may harbor a secret nostalgia for a... land of living hats. Lidsville, that is, a "groove, groove, grooviest" place where everyone has flipped their lid and hats have come alive. Such was the wacky world that television impresarios Sid and Marty Krofft unleashed on a generation of schoolchildren in the early to mid 1970s. Likely there is many a corporate executive today who, under times of stress, may be heard to hum a little jingle to themselves: "H.R. Pufnstuff / Who's your friend when things get rough? / H.R. Pufnstuff / Can't do a little 'cuz he can't do enough!"

H.R. Pufnstuf, Lidsville, The Bugaloos, Land of the Lost, Far Out Space Nuts, and several others were Saturday morning television shows for children. All were colorfully populated by recognizable humans as well as actors in elaborate makeup, costumed fantasy characters, and outlandish puppets. Pufnstuf & Other Stuff takes a fond look back at these shows and evening programs, such as the Donny & Marie show, that also emerged from the prolific Krofft studios. Author David Martindale, who fits squarely into the age-group demographic for Krofft devotees, answers such potent questions as "Was Pufnstuf filled with double-entendre and punning drug references, even in the show's title, H.R. Pufnstuf?" (You'll have to read the book to find out.) Nostalgic grownups are the obvious audience for this book, but television and social historians will enjoy it, too. --Brenda Pittsley

For nostalgia's sake alone, this book is worth it. I loved looking at the pictures and reading the names from my favorite shows as I was growing up. These shows were great (at least in my memory). They were not the super-high tech shows of today, but they were fairly advanced in their own way.
As usual, I would have liked a bit more of the stuff behind the scenes, but maybe it is better this way. The shows were simple. Certainly the sets and costumes were simple. Perhaps it is better that the book be simple, too. Why ruin a great thing?

5 out of 5 stars A trippy trip down memory lane.......2005-12-18

I loved this book! I was amazed at how many Krofft stars and guest stars the author tracked down. Filled with fun facts, song lyrics, episode descriptions, and tons of backstage anecdotes, it helped me relive many great childhood memories. Highly recommended for anyone who came of age in the 1970s.

3 out of 5 stars Great little insights, author sounds like a jerk.......2002-11-19

I haven't finished reading it yet, but so far it's a good little coffee table book. Why I think the author sounds like a jerk: when he describes the Bugaloos, he says she's pretty and the blonde and brunette ones are handsome. What does he say about the the only Bugaloo you can tell what he is supposed to BEE? That he was black and that it's obvious by his brown and yellow stripes, he must be a bee. It was very disappointing for he deserved to be described as handsome too. So, if you can get by Martindale's biased descriptions, then you'll enjoy the non-descriminating facts.

                                      2 out of 5 stars Tough sledding.......2002-08-16

Missed opportunity. Filled with restatements, self-serving quotes, warm and fuzzy verbiage, etc. Could have been condensed down to a 75 page book by a sharp editor.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Trippy television ... a trippy book.......2000-05-09

What I enjoyed most about this book: It was a fun and breezy -- yet informative -- read about a genre of television I had kind of forgotten about, yet the book vividly brought the shows all back to me. Then there were some great behind-the-scenes things, like the Kroffts' positions today on whether the apparent drug-culture references in the shows (even in pun titles like "H.R. Pufnstuf" and "Lidsville") were really intended to be interpreted that way. I recommend it to any Saturday morning/Krofft fan.
