Book Description
Jane Hamilton, award-winning author of The Book of Ruth and A Map of the World, is back in top form with a richly textured novel about a tragic accident and its effects on two generations of a family.
When Aaron Maciver’s beautiful young wife, Madeline, suffers brain damage in a bike accident, she is left with the intellectual powers of a six-year-old. In the years that follow, Aaron and his second wife care for Madeline with deep tenderness and devotion as they raise two children of their own.
Narrated by Aaron's son, Mac, When Madeline Was Young chronicles the Maciver family through the decades, from Mac’s childhood growing up with Madeline and his cousin Buddy in Wisconsin through the Vietnam War, through Mac’s years as a husband with children of his own, and through Buddy’s involvement with the subsequent Gulf Wars. Jane Hamilton, with her usual humor and keen observations of human relationships, deftly explores the Maciver's unusual situation and examines notions of childhood (through Mac and Buddy’s actual youth as well as Madeline’s infantilization) and a rivalry between Buddy’s and Mac’s families that spans decades and various wars. She captures the pleasures and frustrations of marriage and family, and she exposes the role that past relationships, rivalries, and regrets inevitably play in the lives of adults.
Inspired in part by Elizabeth Spencer’s Light in the Piazza, Hamilton offers an honest and exquisite portrait of how a family tragedy forever shapes and alters the boundaries of love.
Customer Reviews:
A storyline that wandered.......2007-09-26
You grow up, you get married to the woman of your dreams. But then all of a sudden she has a bicycle wreck that leaves her living life with a 6-year-old mentality. What do you do? Do you stay married? What happens to your wife? We find in this touching story that the decision of one man was to take care of his wife as she was his own child. He raised her with his children (from a second marriage) and loved her nonstop.
Mac is this man's son who grew up thinking that Madeline was his sister. Mac took Madeline to the park, to the ice cream parlor, and defended her against bullies who called her dumb or tried to take advantage of her. Somewhere along the way, Mac learned the truth about Madeline, but still continued to love her like a sister. Mac takes us through his journey as he remembers it when he gets the call that his cousin's son has been killed in action. Mac tries to decide whether or not to go to the funeral and in doing so, relives his years growing up with Madeline.
Somewhere along the way, I lost the point of the story being Madeline-and it became more about Mac and who he was. Madeline was mentioned occasionally, but mainly as a background character. With the title being about her, I thought the book would have centered more around her rehab, therapies and life after the accident.
Jane Hamilton has a gift in writing that makes it easy to read. While this story is a beautiful one, it was a bit confusing from chapter to chapter. I never knew what decade was being discussed. The story seemed to bounce all over the place with flashbacks that came without warning. It also seems very odd to me when a female writer writes from the male perspective and vice versa.
I think this book could have been better as a finished product if it would have had a little more organization to the story line. The story was there, it just needed some redirection.
Armchair Interview says: A story of extreme caretaking that most would or could never do.
The Two Mrs. Macivers.......2007-08-24
In When Madeline Was Young, Jane Hamilton creates one of the more unusual American families that readers will find in recent fiction. Their story begins with the 1943 bicycle accident that left newlywed Madeline Maciver forever trapped inside the mind of a seven-year-old child, an accident that shaped the Maciver family in ways that no one could have foreseen. Aaron Maciver, her husband, determined to do right by Madeline despite the fact her parents write her out of their own lives, refuses to even consider the option of placing her in any kind of institution. At the hospital, during the early days after Madeline's accident, Aaron is comforted by talking to Julia, a nurse whom he briefly met at his wedding, and they find themselves falling in love.
When Julia eventually becomes the second Mrs. Maciver, she and Aaron agree that Madeline must remain a part of their new family and she effectively becomes their first "child," something that does not seem at all unusual to the son and daughter who complete the family. It is through the eyes of their son Mac that we learn what happens to this remarkable family for the next several decades. Most of the book is set in the fifties and sixties, two decades that Hamilton recreates in a way that reminds the reader just how different they were from each other. Through Mac's memories of his childhood and teen years, she contrasts the enthusiasm and innocence of the fifties with the angst and anger that the Viet Nam war created in the sixties.
This was not the novel I expected it to be. I was hoping that Hamilton would tell more of the story through the eyes of Madeline herself, offering some insight into what it would be like to suffer the kind of injury that Madeline suffered, but she became much more of a secondary character than I wanted her to be. With Mikey O'Day, Madeline's brain damaged boyfriend, Hamilton did, however, create one of the more memorable characters that I have encountered in a long while. The always happy Mikey O'Day, a man who loved singing in public and who saw Madeline as the love of his life, was sheer joy in his innocence and turned out to be my favorite character in the entire book.
In reality, When Madeline Was Young is an ordinary book about an extraordinary subject. It could have been so much more if Hamilton had focused more on Madeline and less on the things that made the Macivers just like every other family in the fifties and sixties. The Macivers were different and it is those differences that I wanted to learn about.
A Fine Read.......2007-06-28
Jane Hamilton has done her readers a great favor with her latest work. In exquisitely describing a loving family living in the complexity of mid-20th c. America, she allows us to enter into a family which beautifully ties itself to each of its individual members. I loved this book and didn't want it to end. Mac, the narrator, is the product of parents who live the values they hold dear; his reflections on his childhood and his adult family life show that the lessons took hold. The parents' political beliefs are an extension of the way they see the world as it should be -- a nurturing and hospitable place for everyone. It's no Utopia, though, and Hamilton's keen observation of family dynamics engages the reader in the confusions and conflicts of this mid-western family, shedding light on life's complexities throughout the unfolding of this quietly compelling story. This is a fine read!
Also disappointed.......2007-05-26
Glad to see I wasn't the only reader disappointed by this book. I have truly loved all of Hamilton's previous works, which makes the disappointment in this one even that much deeper. Whose story is this? Mac's? Julia's? The ever-present debate between war and peace? It's certainly not Madeline's story. The real question is - who cares? I found it difficult to connect with or care about any of the characters at all, and the tangets Hamilton goes on - Mac's family, Louise as a cellist, Julia's war discussions - detracted from what I felt was the main story. Although it was difficult to grasp what that main story was supposed to be. Don't waste your time on this book. Read, or re-read, Short History of a Prince or Map of the World instead.
Just awful..........2007-03-17
I've loved the author's previous books but this one was just 'off'. I tried to care about these characters, tried to get into it but it was just BORING.

Checkmate is interfering in Gotham, and Batman is not too happy. Poisoned heroin has turned one triad member into a birdman, and both the Bat and the Game are trying to track down a supplier.
Batman: Bruce Wayne - Fugitive, Vol. 2.......2006-08-04
it's ok on it's own, a little better combined with the rest of the series
much better than "Bruce Wayne - Murderer?".......2005-03-28
***This is a review of Fugitive Volume 1 only***
Be sure to pick up "Bruce Wayne - Murderer?" before ordering this book. That's where you'll get all the exposition (Bruce is framed for murder, goes to prison, breaks out, etc.). That book is spotty, but still worth picking up. It has so many writers on it, there doesn't seem to be a single vision for the book.
On to this book, "Fugitive #1"...
This book is much, much better. We still have a bunch of writers (Grayson and Brubaker are the standouts, and even Dixon is OK) but it somehow works here. The story has a more natural flow to it than the last one. There's a lot of the "Bat-family" in this (Nightwing, Robin, Oracle, Batgirl, etc.) trying to clear Bruce's name. Not very much Batman here. It's a solid mystery with some fun detective work. I didn't even mind the Robin and Batgirl chapters (these are usually pretty crummy titles).
There is no resolution at the end of this book, so you'll have to buy the later books to get answers to all the questions raised here.
I had a great time with this. Check it out!
Great!.......2004-12-13
This graphic novel is the second in a two-part series. In the first part of the series, Bruce Wayne was framed for the murder of a woman, and had to go into hiding, even closing down the Batcave. In this volume, Batman goes on the trail of poisoned heroin that has hit the streets of Gotham City with a bang. Who is selling this heroin, and why? Somebody very powerful is behind all of this, and only Batman can get to the bottom of it. But, what can he do to clear his name?
This is another great Batman graphic novel. The story itself is complex and gripping, and I found the illustration work to be great. So, if you are a fan of the Dark Knight, then you should check out this book it's great!
Counterpoint.......2003-06-10
A previous reviewer had one reservation with this book, nad that would be Batman's, for lack of a better term, "support staff." Beyond an exquisitely handled murder mystery, this is an exploration into Bruce Wayne's own psychoses and hypocrisy. Honestly, why would such an individualistic lone wolf need so many underlings? Take into account Bruce's age: he's in his mid-to-late-thirties by this point, as the story is set one decade since the Batman first appeared on the streets of Gotham. As protector of the city, Bruce Wayne has an overdeveloped paternal instinct, and has subliminally acquired a family under his alternate persona.
On the other hand, he tries to push this family away, because he feels his is the only soul tormented enough to sacrifice himself to the rigors of being the city's justiciar.

Great Book - Action Packed .......2005-01-12
"Watchdogs of Space" was the first Star Commandos Series book I ever read. Since this I've read "Pariah" and "War Prince." These are fabulous books -- so much fun to read. I never thought I could love science fiction. What is especially nice about these books are the characters. You just love them and love being with them on all of their adventures.
Welcome back, "Star Commandos"!.......2004-11-06
I stayed up half the night reading WATCHDOGS OF SPACE recently, unable to put it down, after having waited most of 13 years for a continuation of the STAR COMMANDOS series. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys SF adventure with a very healthy helping of character development and some truly satisfying long-term relationships among former-enemies-turned-friends-and-lovers-and-family.
As background, I should note that P.M. Griffin's STAR COMMANDOS is a series whose first nine novels were published between 1986 and 1991, and then NOTHING about those characters (that I had seen) since 1991. (Griffin had also published books in Andre Norton's Solar Queen, Time Traders, and Witch World universes and various short stories which I'd very much enjoyed and enjoyed re-reading, as well, but I hadn't seen anything new from her for some time, until a random search on Amazon revealed that she'd published the first of three new STAR COMMANDOS novels in 2002.) I discovered the first paperback novel (titled, simply enough, STAR COMMANDOS) quite by accident in the tiny public library of a small town in Iowa in 1989, read it because it was recommended by Andre Norton, and enjoyed it so much that I immediately set about trying to find a copy of my own. I completed my collection of all nine Star Commandos novels in 1991 and have been using them as "comfort food" or a "virtual spa" for mental and emotional escape by re-reading them all at least once every year or two since then.
I enjoyed the 10th book, WATCHDOGS OF SPACE, very much, even though I got the feeling, at first, that many of the situations were reminiscent of earlier adventures (a sort of refresher course in everything our heroes had been through in the previous nine novels, I initially thought).
For anyone else familiar with cult TV shows, WATCHDOGS was kind of like the 6th season of "Buffy", in that the "nemeses" of our heroes (in case of STAR COMMANDOS, the most-highly-decorated-in-the-history-of-the-Terran-Federation Commando team headed by Islaen Connor and her former-alien-foe-turned-devoted-husband-and-second-in-command Varn Sogan) seem a tad petty and mundane, though still deadly. But then -- in the case of BtVS -- you realize that the real enemy Buffy and Co. faced in season 6 wasn't meant to be the nerd trio at all, but rather an inner crisis of meaning and confidence and identity. And in WATCHDOGS OF SPACE, the real enemy was the fact that our heroes (for once) didn't have a sufficiently over-whelming external enemy to face, to keep up the pounding, unrelenting, adrenaline-filled, life-or-death, fate-of-the-galaxy-at-stake-so-no-time-for-healing-old-wounds pressure that they'd been living with since they all hooked up two years earlier. Instead, they were being 'nibbled to death by ducks', almost -- confronting old wounds that had never had a chance to heal properly in themselves and contending with the petty greed and prejudices that peace and prosperity seem to encourage in some people.
The real purpose of this tenth book, I think, was to revisit some old wounds and open them up slightly, preparatory to finally tending to them in depth. That, and to reinforce old friendships (like the mutant Malkites' and Sogan's mutual fondness and loyalty for one another, despite all odds), introduce some promising new friends for our heroes (including a Terran High Admiral and the mostly mutant maintenace crews who'd happily take a laser bolt for Sogan-the-presumed-mutant-hater, once they get to know him), and finally give Varn a chance to tell the Arcturian Empire which had once condemned him and chucked him out with the garbage where to go and what it could do with itself when it got there!
WATCHDOGS comes to a very satisfying conclusion of its own, but it also lays some valuable groundwork for the final two books in the series, which deal with and finally get a chance to resolve some of the questions and problems and sources of despair that have been troubling our heroes from the beginning.
If I had to sum up in one word my review of these last three STAR COMMANDOS novels published between 2002 and 2004, it would be "maturity." These books show that Griffin has not wasted those 11 years between #9 CALL TO ARMS in 1991 and #10 WATCHDOGS OF SPACE in 2002. What these books demonstrate to me is a mature and joyful sense of priorities, as well as the confidence to face one's own demons and defeat them, with more than a little help from one's friends and one's 'family' of fellow mutants and mutant-lovers.
My only complaint with the last three books is that things ended so well and so promisingly, that I'm reluctant to accept WAR PRINCE (#12) as the absolute final book in the series. Couldn't I at least get STAR COMMANDOS: THE NEXT GENERATION at some point? From my point of view (as an ardent and annual re-reader also of the works of Lois McMaster Bujold), I see Islaen and Varn having just arrived, after two years of marriage and saving the world(s) on a regular basis, at the place where Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan and Aral are at the end of Bujold's SHARDS OF HONOR and BARRAYAR, and it's time to see what kinds of trouble the next generation of Commandos and extended family and friends can get themselves into and get back out of again.
If you were weaned on the SF adventures of Andre Norton and enjoy the works of Lois McMaster Bujold, Barbara Hambly, and others who manage to mix saving the galaxy with building strong relationships, I think you'll find the whole STAR COMMANDOS series a piece of quality escapism, not to be missed.

This is a practical manual to the two types of mediation that form the core of Buddhist spiritual practice.
Customer Reviews:
A practical guide to the two types of Buddhist meditation.......2004-11-16
The very essence of a true path according to Tibetan Buddhism, is precious bodhichitta, or the mind that seeks awakening for the sake of all beings. Bodhichitta can be understood as having two aspects, ultimate and relative. It is the basis of both samsara (endless cyclic existence) and nirvana (peace).
All of the Buddha's teachings can be subsumed under the two categories of shamatha (tranquil abiding) and vipasyana (direct, spontaneous insight in the nature of reality). Therefore, in all vehicles of Tibetan Buddhism, these two categories appear.
On the one hand they are experienced "mixed" together; while on the other hand they appear as relative separate stages in practice, which may be stressed, the one or the other:
First-turning (sutra hinayana) teachings: "renunciation" and insight in "karmic causality";
Second-turning (sutra mahayana) teachings: "emptiness" and insight through transformative "compassion";
Third-turning (tantrayana) teachings: "generation stage" (cultivating intrinsic purity) and "completion stage" (dissolution towards intrinsic perfection);
Mahamudra (Great Seal) teachings: "luminous emptiness" and "pure bliss";
Dzogchen (Great Completion) teachings: "trekcho" (cutting through all distractions and obscurations) and "togal" (the "leap-over" of spontaneous presence).
[I read this in the Preface of "Medicine Buddha Teachings" by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, ISBN 1877294152].
This book is a practical guide to the two types of meditation that form the core of Buddhist spiritual practice, particularly from the Sutra perspective. These teachings, meant for students both beginning and advanced, are based on the eighth chapter of the "Treasury of Knowledge" by Jamgon Kongtrul the Great.
All books with Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche's commentaries are very clear and accessible, and very worthwhile to read and study.
How to meditate.......2000-08-16
Thrangu Rinpoche, who is one of the most outstanding living teachers of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, elaborate here on a text on basic meditation by Jamgon Kongtrul the Great. The book gives a detailed explanation on tranquility meditation (shamatha) and insight meditation (vipasyana). The book is very detailed and accesible, and is useful for all meditators, no matter what level they are on, as it deals with all levels in meditation and also on how to deal with different experiences that may arise. I can't recommend it enough!

Book Description
Anyone still think that Adobe Photoshop Elements is a toy version of the real thing? As the most popular photo-editing program on the market, Photoshop Elements not only has Photoshop's marvelous powers, but also has capabilities the mothership lacks. Each new version includes more tools designed specifically for today's consumer digital photo enthusiasts. The latest edition, Photoshop Elements X, solidifies the reputation of this superb and inexpensive product with new scrapbook features, a link to online photo services, and many other improvements.
In fact, there's so much to Photoshop Elements that it can be quite confusing at times. That's precisely why our Missing Manuals are the bestselling books on the topic. Adobe provides a pamphlet and some help files; our book, now in its fourth edition, carefully explains every feature the program has to offer (something no other book has done) by putting each one into a clear, easy-to-understand context.
Photoshop Elements X: The Missing Manual covers the Windows version of Adobe's workhorse and gives you the low down on a host of new features:
- Learn to create multiple page documents, custom photo layouts with frames, and highly customized layouts for scrapbook projects
- Master the new editor for Layer Styles, which lets you customize individual layers in a photo
- "Attach" your photos to areas of a Yahoo! Map so your friends and family can see the pictures you took in specific places
Author Barbara Brundage also introduces you to a new sophisticated tool called "Curves" to adjust the color and contrast in your photos, and shows you how to burn multi-session CDs and DVDs. As always, she lets you know which features work well, which don't, and why -- all with a bit of wit and good humor. Although the book progresses from simple to complex tasks, you can easily jump around to learn specific techniques, such as creating photomontages (composites), restoring old photos, preparing images for the Web, and archiving. More than a dozen downloadable images let you practice using the editing tools right away!
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and clear.......2007-10-11
I never take the methodical approach to learning anything. After installing Elements 5, I sat down with The Missing Manual and a few photos and began editing. It was fairly easy to consult the index and then read the pages necessary to change my photos. I skipped around the book from back to front and in between. The resulting photos were surprisingly good.
I'm not recommending this learning process, but if you want to just jump off the deep end and begin editing, it is doable. When time permits, an organized and careful reading will no doubt produce even better photographic results. In the meantime, I find reading a few pages and just experimenting with my pictures is a lot of fun.
Two important things to remember: Don't be intimidated by the size of this manual. It contains everything you wanted to know and a lot of stuff you don't want to know. Skip the latter. Next, always make a copy of your original photo and edit the copy. This way, you can be fearless in your experimenting always knowing that the original is unharmed and ready to supply endless copies for you to play with.
The complaint I have about The Missing Manual is the quality of the photo-examples printed in the book. Not the fault of the author. The printing quality is just very, very poor. The book would have earned 5-stars from me were it not for the paper/print quality.
Photoshop Elements 5 The Missing Manual.......2007-10-06
Excellent book for learning the basics of Photoshop Elements 5. Well organized and easy to follow.
Photoshop Elements 5.0 The Missing Manual.......2007-09-29
This is a must have. Covers everything the other manuals miss, and gives pertinent information others miss. Well written, easily followed and understood. Pick a topic and go, or read it from front to back.
Good information, but needs more step by step instructions........2007-09-24
Lots of information but some of it assumes you already know how to use it. Can get to what you want to do with some digging.
Outstanding reference for Elements users.......2007-09-20
I did quite a bit of research on Elements 5.0 books, and I ended up choosing this one because of the great reviews it had gotten. Excellent choice! The book is very easy to understand, and I can't imagine tackling Elements 5.0 without it. It gave me the good start I needed in understanding and effectively using the software. Barbara Brundage is an excellent author. She's great at writing in a way that gives you the info you need while avoiding the techno-speak that many software developers use. If you have Elements 5.0 and need a good reference....or a good way to start using the software...this is your book.

Book Description
The ten years from the civil rights movement to the new age produced the greatest advance toward equality since the abolition of slavery and also brought defeat of the most massive war machine in human history, all this by peaceful protest! For the people profiled in THE SIXTIES, it was a bewildering spiritual search as police undercover agents agitated in favor of violent protests, while rich communists stonewalled to preserve the status quo. The black heroine overcomes female impotence. An atheist libertine transforms into a religious guru. Funny and miraculous!
This title includes autobiographical drawings by the author. The text in this title is idential with that of THE SIXTIES.
