Book Description
JACK RIGGS
When the Finch Rises is the debut novel of an author whose work will be read as classic literature for a long time to come. It is a story full of truths and revelations, transcending its fictional bounds to become something so real and so finely wrought that it will simply astonish. Jack Riggs has created an emotional testament to the myriad shades of the human condition.
It is the late 1960s in the small North Carolina mill town of Ellenton. Twelve-year-old Raybert Williams and his best friend Palmer Conroy live in cramped homes in a working-class neighborhood, but they use the vast outdoors as their personal playground. Yet hardships are never far away. Raybert’s father disappears for days at a time, only to come home broken and battered. Raybert’s mother is a loving woman who battles her own demons while struggling to keep it all together. Palmer’s family life offers no better refuge for the adventure-seeking boys.
But Raybert and Palmer have each other. And in that glorious friendship, they are significantly blessed. They dream together of space flight and moonwalks. They construct a bike jump to rival Evel Knievel’s–and they’ll run it once they work up the courage. Knievel tempted fate and won, taking a leap over twenty buses on faith alone, soaring high and landing safely, even after many crashes and broken bones. Palmer and Raybert have their own plan that, once executed, will take them all the way to the ocean, landing them intact and together on the other side of freedom.
Through the scrim of adolescence and poverty, Jack Riggs offers a glimpse of universal human foibles and singular moments of transcendence. Fiercely honest and beautifully narrated, When the Finch Rises flashes like the sharp rim of the eclipsed moon on the night when Raybert and Palmer’s fate is finally revealed.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully written and emotionally stirring.......2007-03-27
This book felt real, it wasn't written with the condescention that often accompanies books written about small southern towns, nor was it written to the other extreme- the glorification of all things Southern.
Instead, it was written honestly, showing both the faults and the joys of a Small Town, and both the faults and the joys of each character-- each one realistic, each one evoking his or her own sympathies. Mr. Riggs writes so well, easily describing the landscape and natural beauty of N.C. and just as easily describing emotions that even the young boys in the book find hard to pin-point.
It leaves the reader stirring, just a little bit uncomfortable, but wondering what life will bring to the two boys who felt so alive and so real in the book.
What a wonderful book!.......2005-09-18
Jack Riggs did a wonderful job in capturing the struggles of Palmer and Raybert. The greatness of having a best friend that loves you unconditionaly was very well written in this book. Growing up in a mill town in the early '60s in disfunctional families made Palmer and Raybert depend on each other even more. What a great book!
Great Southern Literature.......2005-09-06
I was drawn to this book by the recommendation by Lee Smith on the cover. Anything that Ms. Smith endorses, I will be glad to try. And When the Finch Rises turns out to be well worth the price. Yes, this book is about friendship and love, but it is much more than that. Mr. Riggs delves into issues of taking responsibility for ones actions and willingness to face life head on. Strangely enough, it is the children who are the strongest characters since they have not succumbed to their weaknesses as the adults have. This book is both charming and thought provoking.
The only negative comment I have is that each chapter, although linked by plot, seemed almost like separate short stories. This is not necessaily bad, but it does keep the book from flowing quite as smoothly as it could.
But this is only a minor criticism. It is well worthg reading. Enjoy!
A wonderful tale of love and hardship.......2005-06-22
I had to force myself to meter out the 234 pages of "When The Finch Rises". What a wonderful story. In it, we meet Raybert and Palmer, who live in a mill town in a small rural town.
The main characters develop a relationship that is amazing to behold. It is a pure love that Jack Riggs captures perfectly. Ray struggles with the knowledge that his father was involved in a notorious lynching, and Palmer finds happiness in Ray, when none can be found in his home life. While both characters are but 12 years old, in this story, they learn life lessons beyond their years.
Read this book. It will warm your heart.
Best southern writer in years!.......2005-03-11
The only downside to this book is that you don't want to leave it to do things like take your kids to school and your other daily duties. This book is heartbreakingly beautiful. It reads like a dream and the story is haunting and soulful. I can't think of a comparison for any potential reader. Discovering this writer is like reading Kaye Gibbons for the first time. It is just so good on all accounts. My understanding is that the author has a cache of short stories about the two little boy protaganists of this book. I want to read each and every one of them. I want to know what happens next....not only with these two little boys, but with Jack Riggs as well!

Book Description
Sanzo's life is on the line. He is stranded in the desert with no way out as Goku desperately searches for a way to save Sanzo from the poison coursing through his veins. An unlikely run-in with Kougaiji offers a possible cure. If Kougaiji is defeated, Sanzo may live. But the sacrifice of Goku's sanity may be too high a price to pay. After all, if Goku saves Sanzo, who will save Goku?
Customer Reviews:
A must read for fans of the anime.......2005-02-22
This volume continues the encounter with the Scorpion demon, and the tough decision Goku needs to make to save Sanzo's life. This is one of the first issues where it becomes evident where the anime departed from the original storyline. A darker, more sinister Dr. Ni (the weirdo with the stuffed bunny)gets his hands on Kougaji and Lirin to perform his twisted experiments, which is only hinted about in the anime. The beginnings of a new storyline emerge where a few casual gripes by Gojyo may prove fatal for his companions.
High quality drawings with a good mixture of humorous camaraderie, action filled fighting, and serious character introspection make Saiyuki one of the best manga out there.

Book Description
Four hundred years after winning Secession from the Terran Empire, the star system Accord wants to sign a simple trade treaty on microchip export tariffs. But if the agreement is so minor, why is Professor Nathaniel Whaler--top economist at the Ecolitan Institute, and his world's top commando killer--chosen Accord's Envoy?Because the Imperial capital is a maddening bureaucracy of sniveling diplomats, high profile figureheads, powers behind the throne, and spies--everywhere, spies......Because the Envoy has to face red tape, politics, prejudice--and a gauntlet of kidnappers, assassins, snipers, and bombs....Because some Ministry--but which?--doesn't want the treaty. Because some in the Empire still blame Accord for Earth's poisoning and the defection of fifty star systems after the war between Imperial nuclear might and Ecolitan bio-ecological weaponry. A hidden cabal wants to fight the war again--even if, this time, the entire galaxy dies. And only Nathaniel Whaler, the Ecologic Envoy, has the power to stop the catastrophe.
Customer Reviews:
A Bull in a China Shop.......2004-06-11
The Ecologic Envoy (1986) is the third novel in The Ecolitan Matter series according to the internal chronology, following The Ecolitan Secession. In the previous volume, Ecolitan Professor James Joyson Whaler II led the Ecolitan Institute in a successful war of secession against the Empire. Other systems beyond the Parthanian Rift and elsewhere also declared their independence at that time.
Four centuries have passed since the Secession. Terra still bears the scars of ecological damage and the small planetary population seldom leaves the underground warrens. However, the Empire has otherwise recovered from the war and the Imperial navy has grown even stronger. Now the Empire has mostly assumed that Accord is no longer a major force in the galaxy and has started taking action to recover its former territory beyond the Rift, first subduing Haversol and then asking for tariff revisions in the trade with Accord.
In this novel, Ecolitan Professor Nathaniel Firstborne Whaler is appointed as Trade Envoy and sent to New Augusta. Shortly after his arrival, as he and his Imperial escort approach the Accord Legation in the Diplomat Tower, someone fires a splinter gun at him. The assassin misses, but escapes his pursuers.
While several Imperial marines chase the assassin, Whaler presents his credentials to the staffer at the desk and is taken to meet the other workers. Only three of the legation personnel -- the Legate, his Deputy and the Information Specialist -- are Accordan natives; the others are provided by the Empire itself. Witherspoon, the Legate, has been called home for consultation, so Whaler will be the senior official in the legation.
Later Whaler presents his credentials to the Emperor and then attempts to deliver the official Accordan response to the Imperial tariff proposals. He receives a cordial, but inconclusive welcome at the Ministry of Commerce, but the External Affairs Minister is never available when he calls. He does have an interesting luncheon meeting with a member of Senator Helmsworth's staff and they exchange a few truths.
His first realization of the differences between Accord and the Imperial capital concerns the power of the Special Assistants in the bureaucracy, all of whom are women. While the nominal heads of all ministries are noblemen, they are only figureheads for the women who actually run these organizations. In fact, the Imperials are befuddled when Whaler doesn't bring a Special Assistant with him to the talks.
Whaler also learns that the Grand Admiral of the Imperial navy does not want the trade talks to proceed. She has ordered his assassination so that such talks might be deferred indefinitely. The initial assassination attempt is soon followed by others with varying levels of subtleness. Whaler plays the buffon while circumventing each attack and continuing to shake up the higher levels of Imperial bureaucracy.
In this story, Accord cannot appear to be unwilling to negotiate with the Empire, for the Haversol takeover was partially blamed on stalled trade talks. Of course, the death of the envoy could be considered a stalling tactic by the Impies. And it doesn't help at all that one or more of the legation staffers are actively helping the assassins.
Moreover, Whaler is working against a negative media stereotype of Accordans and especially of Ecolitans. The Imperial populace has long considered the ecological attack on Terra during the Accordan Secession to be particularly infamous. Accordans are still portrayed as evil villains in modern stories as well as historical dramas. Somehow he has to gain the sympathy of the common people.
The story features a protagonist who is simultaneously a scholar and a warrior, an exemplar of the Ecolitan tradition. Whaler has plenty of opportunity to display his close combat skills, yet the story is more of a mystery than a suspense thriller. His mission is further complicated when he becomes attracted toward Sylvia Ferro-Maine, a former Imperial Intelligence agent.
Highly recommended for Modesitt fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of political maneuvering and personal combat with a touch of romance.
-Arthur W. Jordin
Fast, tightly written, classic sci-fi space opera.......1999-11-01
One of Modesitt's earlier works, this book is characteristic of those novels: sparely written with hardly a wasted word or thought. It required several readings for me at my usual breakneck speed in order to fully appreciate his prose. Not a terribly complicated plot line, but if you're not paying attention, it is easy to miss important points and it has a clever twist or two. I really enjoyed it the first time and was gratified to finally see it again in print.
One last point: it is important that you read the other two books originally written with this book. The Ecolitan Secession and The Ecolitan Operation, which actually predate this book in the history of the series even though they were published later. More recently, he has published the Recluce series, and a sequel to the original Ecologic Envoy. I greatly enjoyed his earlier works, and the only real change since then has been a wordier style of prose. If it means anything, this reviewer has purchased [occasionally new; which is astonishing for me!] all of Modesitt's books and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Enjoy!
Not the most entertaining Ecolitan Book, but close.......1999-05-28
I'm a fan Modesitt's humor, and this book had its good parts - it lacks the blood thirsty abandon of the Eco Operation (which i think is out of print?), and the interesting physics of the Eco Enigma (M*A=boom heheh), but I found it a fun read. You could do worse than to read this book.
Book Description
Enjoy and prepare simple raw foods, the healthiest foods nature has to offer, while living a busy lifestyle. This book is perfect for raw food beginners, busy people, health-conscious slackers, and those on temporary cleansing programs. It makes a great gift for the raw-curious as well, since it is the simplest and least intimidating raw food recipe book on the market. It includes over 120 recipes, almost half of which are or include machine-free options.
Customer Reviews:
A nice book.......2007-08-08
My wife does the cooking, but she has enjoyed the book. They have simpler recipes than some of the other raw foods books and take less time to prepare. I would recommend it.
Absolutely Horrible.......2007-07-27
The title of book itself is misleading. Several receipese require machines, such as the use of a blender. There is really no simple way for busy people to go raw without investing in equipment, time and money. This book is a joke and the receipes were horrible. Who needs a receipe for salad. Don't waste your money.
Good book!.......2007-06-18
This is a really good book for people looking for raw recipes on the go. I'd give it five stars if it contained a few conventionally "breakfasty" dishes that I've seen in other raw cookbooks, such as raw granolas or crepes, but there are none. As such, this may not be the best first raw book for someone who's transitioning, but I would definitely recommend it to someone who is familiar with the lifestyle and is looking for fast ways to make really good food.
Quick and Edible.......2007-05-13
Incredible for people with out a lot of equipment that are trying to go raw.
Not so great.......2007-05-09
This was an alright book, but I haven't found myself using it much.
First of all, a lot of the recipes call for a dehydrator - wait, I thought this was machine-free?
I much prefer "Raw Food Made Easy" - which is truly more machine-free (I bought a food processor for $40 - which you need for those recipes, but have so far held off on the $180 dehydrator) and, as said in the title, easy! I don't think you should bill yourself as machine-free when lots of your recipes require something as expensive as a dehydrator!
I am giving this two stars - I haven't really tried the recipes, so I can't judge them - but the fact that I haven't says something considering I am making recipes every day from the book I mentioned above!

This is not a book but a sturdy, miniature cardboard replica of a steamer trunk such as one that might have gone down on Titanic, complete with mock-metal triangular corner protectors. Inside, there is a trove of reproductions of memorabilia from the Titanic Historical Society to wow anybody fascinated by the shipwreck: a first-class ticket; a "radiotelegramm" from the ship Amerika four hours before the disaster warning of icebergs; the fancy brochure passengers got; the orchestra's repertoire (including "Songe d'Automne," the last tune played); maps of each deck; menus (including that of the last night's fare--not very health-conscious food, actually); adhesive luggage stickers you can apply to your suitcase; reproductions of Titanic postcards--some with greetings that were delivered, some blank and suitable for mailing; a booklet of notes on all the luxuries available to first-class passengers; and a list of all first-class passengers to reassure one of one's high social standing. An irresistible box redolent of another era. --Tim Appelo
Book Description
The tragedy of the Titanic is chillingly present in the details: that the sea was calm and the night moonless; that the orchestra played "Songe d'Automne" as the icy water rose. Drawn from the archives of the Titanic Historical Society, The Titanic Collection uses real documents authentically reproduced to paint a riveting portrait of life on board. Reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century steamer trunk, this deluxe box contains more than 18 items, including the boarding pass of a man who missed the sailing, a brochure reviewing the amenities and civilities of the first class, deck maps, luggage stickers, postcards sent from the ship, and replicas of three tragic telegrams: the warning of icebergs ahead, the Titanic's distress call, and the heartrending announcement of the disaster. The Titanic Collection also includes a fact-filled booklet and timeline. Few will want to resist a closer look at the utterly compelling items in The Titanic Collection.
Customer Reviews:
Your ticket to history........2002-05-03
Step on board the world's most famous ship with "The Titanic Collection", a fascinating assemblage of documents that is as valuable for historians as it is for collectors. It goes one step further than any book on the subject by placing in your hands the very things that those who travelled on that fateful maiden voyage in 1912 would themselves have touched, giving you a "Titanic" experience more vivid than anything one could possibly get from staring at lifeless photographs.
The reproductions included in the collection are first-rate: sharp, clear, and alive with colour . . . in short, nothing less than museum-quality. Choose a first-class cabin from detailed deck plans, much as prospective passengers would have done all those years ago. Examine the brochure that the White Star Line gave out to those who were planning to book passage on their newest vessels, "Olympic" and "Titanic". Hand over your boarding card and step aboard, but don't forget to read the passenger list before hobnobbing with the industrialists on first class!
Pick an entree from the first-class lunch menu. Write a note to your friends back home on one of seven different postcards. Then, sit down to a glorious Sunday dinner with such dishes as filets mignons lili and french ice cream for dessert. Finish your day in the D-deck reception room with a relaxing selection from White Star's music booklet.
There's so much more to see: luggage stickers; wireless messages; a White Star Line information booklet for first-class passengers; even an official landing card, issued to one of the survivors for presentation to immigration officials shortly before the "Carpathia"'s arrival in New York (note the haunting words CARPATHIA EX TITANIC). Background information on every item is provided by the excellent supplementary booklet included with the collection, written by Eric Sauder and Hugh Brewster. With a detailed timeline of significant events and a brief list of must-reads for budding "Titanic" buffs, it's far more than an exhibition catalogue. It even discusses how the Titanic Historical Society -- from which most of the original items reproduced in the set were obtained -- was formed and how one might become a member of this renowned organisation.
For less than twenty dollars (a fraction of what these priceless documents would be worth today), one could get a front-row seat to life on board one of the world's greatest maritime wonders.
A must-have for all Titanic lovers.......2001-08-23
I hadn't even finished looking through this wonderful collection before having to quickly sign on and place my review here! What a surprising, impressive, and very authenticated collection. The box itself is a replica of a small steamer trunk. Inside, the treasures are truly wonderous! There is nothing cheap here. The postcards, the booklets, the ship's plans--some of the postcards have original writings and postmarks on them. Notice the water spots on some, indelibly marked and haunting to look at. The materials used to create these momentos are thick and sturdy cardboard-like; nothing flimsy in this little trunk. The "Notes" booklet is fascinating itself...I felt as if I had truly boarded this ill-fated steamer, and wished to rent a rug and deck chair upon arrival to my cabin!
A Great Buy!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-09
When I first saw this collection at the book store I thought it was priced a little high, but I bought it anyway, and im happy I did. It was worth any penny. It has many things to offer such as: deck plans showing the layout of the first class rooms showing the funiture, it has the menus from the last day on board, it has passanger lists, and has poastcards, pasanger listings and many other things. I hope that you you spend that little bit of money for something so great as I did. You will be very satisfied.
Wonderful collection for the biggest TITANIC Buff!.......1998-12-03
I seen this collection at the bookstore and was completly astounded! The wide variety of reproductions is great enough, but the price and quality is amazing. A definite must for all TITANIC collectors!
First class reproductions for the Titanic buff.......1998-10-13
For those who enjoy reading and collecting White Star Line and Titanic pieces, this is a must. Featured are many perfect reproductions of Titanic and Olympic postcards which sell for over a hundred dollars apiece if they were original. Many things included in this set would be impossible to own if they were true vintage pieces, so the next best thing are these beautiful reproduction postcards, passenger list, passenger sailing brochure, music booklet and so much more. Would make a wonderful gift for anyone interested in the Titanic.RECOMMENDED at this price!
