I had a hard time deciding whether I should give it 5 stars or 4 stars, because it took me a long time to get into this book and get interested in the characters. I didn't really care for the setting. To me, it wasn't really cozy enough.

The writing was good. The clues/twists/surprises were clever. The more pages I read, the better it got. When I got to the last 100 pages, I couldn't put it down. It was so interesting, and it kept getting even more interesting by the page.

So while I was deciding whether this deserved a low 5 or a high 4, the last 100 pages convinced me to give it a 5. The last 100 pages were so good - those pages in themselves deserved a very high 5!

A small town in Georgia. Her "detective" "Mac" is a 60-something married woman (part-time magistrate and co-owner of the family nursery business). Mac is surrounded by friends, family, and neighbors, and the town she describes is so real you can picture it in your mind. This book almost begs to be made into a movie.

It is February in middle Georgia, and the heavy rain never stops. A friend of Mac and her husband is found lying in the rain, hit by a car -- his own, as it turns out, but the car is found parked in a church some distance away, so this was no accident. How could someone else get behind the wheel of his car and run him down?

The incompetent police chief decides it must be a Mexican new to town, and Mac ends up trying to find out who killed her friend -- she's convinced it wasn't the chief suspect, but she fears it may be a family member or someone else close to the victim.

It is only fair to warn readers that Mac is a Christian and the book is sprinkled with her religious views -- not oppressively so, but somewhat surprisingly so, for a book that I would not classify as a "Christian mystery."

This was my first book by this author but I've already ordered another. She is a delightful find.

Patricia Sprinkle has done it again. MacLaren Yarbrough is a fabulous character. I have read every book in the series and each time I feel as if I am visiting an old friend. In fact, I am! The town of Hopemore and the characters that live there remind me of a small town in Georgia where I lived for three years. I am waiting with breathless anticipation for the next installment in the Yarbrough's life in Hopemore, Ga. I hope I don't have to wait too long!

delightful amateur sleuth cozy.......2003-01-18

The quiet town of Hopemore, Georgia is the home of local Court magistrate Judge MacLaren Yarbrough, part owner of Yarbrough's Feed, Seed and Nursery. She counts her blessings especially when it comes to her husband Joe Riddley who is recovering nicely from a head wound that almost killed him. Her next door neighbor Maynard is getting married soon and he has bought himself a BMW, one that he intends to keep no matter that Skell Macdonald is offering him a fantastic deal to buy it back.

Shortly after Maynard and his bride go on their honeymoon, Skell disappears. At the same time, Skell's father Sky, a popular civic-minded town leader is run over by his own car. While the family grieves, the honeymooners are arrested in Orlando for transporting drugs. The police chief and MacLaren feel Skell knows something about this but the magistrate doesn't believe the missing man could have killed his father. She starts her own investigation and almost gets killed by a murderer who has nothing left to lose.

WHO LEFT THAT BODY IN THE RAIN? is an amateur sleuth cozy in which all the violence takes place outside of the pages of the book. There is no blood and gore but there is plenty of thrills and excitement as the sixty-something sleuth uncovers a host of buried secrets and a surplus of suspects. Readers who are fans of Carolyn Hart and Kate Kingsbury will want to buy Patricia Sprinkle's latest and that will lead to desiring the author's previous mysteries.

I absolutely loved this book from one of my favorite authors. Patricia is a masterful wordsmith; her illustrations truly come alive. Her characters are so very real and so very southern. I especially appreciate the fact that Mac is not a spring chicken like so many other detectives I read about And this mystery really worked.

Great source for adventure hooks and setting detail.......2005-08-02

A must-have if you want to run games in the setting used in the Exalted books. Though the Core book gives some basic setting information, Scavenger Sons actually gives you enough detail to provide starting points for adventures and campaigns, as well as interesting backstories for characters, for any area of the world (not just the Scavenger Lands, as the name implies). If you play like I do, having more setting detail is extremely helpful. Overall, the book is well-written, though be warned that there isn't a whole lot in the way of new rules - if you buy books only for the crunch and could care less about setting detail, you might want to save the money for a new fatsplat instead. However, keep in mind that when the new edition comes out, this book won't become obsolete like many of the others might.

An in-depth look at the lands surrounding the Blessed Isle.......2003-12-26

This sourcebook is meant for the Exalted role-playing game and details the lands surrounding the Blessed Isle (known as the Threshold), including the Scavenger Lands to the East. Overall the book is very well done, providing interesting adventure hooks and details to bring the people, customs, and cities in the Threshold to life. The chapter on Nexus is especially well done with lots of adventure ideas and will be useful for GMs who plan to take their games there.

The only con is that there are no maps provided (except one for the Scavenger lands in Chapter 5) and you will have to rely on the maps that came with the main Exalted rulebook.

The chapters are:

Ch1: The North.
Descrbes the frozen lands north of the Blessed Isle and its people, customs and cities. Includes details of the Haslanti League (a loose confederation of city-states on the shores of the White Sea), iceships and airboats.

Ch2: The East
Describes the lands to the East of the Blessed Isle, but deals mostly with the areas outside of the Scavenger Lands proper which has its own chapter. There is a detailed section on the Sijan the city of the dead, and sections on the people, customs and creatures of the forest lands.

Ch3: The South.
Describes the cities and inhabitants of Gem, Chiaroscuro, the Varang City-States, Harborhead, and the surrounding lands. Nexus is described in a separate chapter. There are notes on Firedust and weapons (e.g. Firewands) using this unique substance.

Ch4: The West
Details the islands of the West, including Wavecrest, Coral , Skullstone, and the dreaded Lintha pirate family.

Ch5: The Scavenger Lands
Describes the so-called Scavenger Lands and includes a detailed history of the River Province. The cities of Lookshy, Great Forks, Sijan, Greyfalls, and Denandsor are described in some detail. A separate section deals with the unique creatures of Mount Metagalapa (hawkriders,birdmen, and great rocs).

Ch6: Nexus
An in-depth description of the teeming megapolis of Nexus which includes descriptions of the surrounding lands, laws, the council, the guild, and the various districts and neighborhoods. A separate section details the First Age Tombs of the Exalted in Nexus, complete with their deadly traps.

Appendix1: Groups and Organisations
Describes the various power factions in the Threshold including the Guild and the Children of the Wyld in greater detail.

Appendix2: The Fair Folk
A thorough discussion on the Fair Folk. This chapter covers the varieties of Fair Folk and their unique powers (Glamour) done in much greater detail than the sections in the main Exalted rulebook.

Not bad at all..........2001-11-21

This is a very deep and thurough look at the scavenger lands. The only bad part of it is that it often leave certain things without stats, as in these tombs of former exalted that annhilate their would be thieves...eh,jsut pet piev though. But all in all, if you are interested in this part of the game world, buy it.

Morning Child and Other Stories by Gardner Dozois arrived in the mail today and all I can think to say is, "Buy this book," even though I know that that is a very shallow and feeble thing to say of a work of art such as this. It is very much a retrospective collection, looking back over the thirty-plus years of Gardner Dozois as an author, stretching back all the way to 1970 ("A Dream at Noonday"), through 1984 ("Morning Child"), through 2002 and 2003 ("The Hanging Curve," "Fairy Tale"). Gardner Dozois is an author I very much admire; there are few whose skill with the written word I admire more.

It contains some of the very best SF you can find, like "A Dream at Noonday," "Chains of the Sea," and "A Special Kind of Morning." When I bought this book,I knew it would be very advanced,but I was very wrong. This book is a cake catalog of the things that Colette Peters can do. The pictures are great,and there are a lot of ideas,but very little explaining and how-to photos. I thought I would learn how to make crooked cakes,but it turns out I learned more from a blog than this book.If you want ideas,it's great,if you want directions,search somewhere else.

This is simply the most wonderful and useful cookbook I have ever came across. I have made almost every one of the recipes in it and my family has enjoyed every one of them. The recipes are very simple and only require minimal ingredient which I love because I have two babies and I don't have much time! I feel like I have made a gormet meal every time I use a recipes in this book. I also love how everything is so natural and healthy in this book. I just love it. I wish I would have came across this book years ago.

As a long time BB card collector, my parents stumbled onto a bobbing head, an item I didn't have. Needless to say I have gotten hooked, with my collection now over twenty dolls. I read the large print on the cover, and thought it would be just what I needed, but the book is really about dolls from 1960-1972. The author simply blows off the newer versions as being too manufactured and barely covers them. A better detail history of the newer dolls and more aggressive price guide would have made this book a 5star.
