A Year in Lapland: Guest of the Reindeer Herders
ASIN: 0935312382 |
Book Description
This autobiographical first novel of working-class life by Moa Martinson, the "Agnes Smedley of Sweden," follows two young women, both victims of sexual abuse, as they become friends and determine to gain for themselves and their children the rights and oppportunities usually denied women, and especially poor women.
Customer Reviews:
translation detracts.......2001-05-07
Moa Martinson's work was long overlooked, even in Sweden. The publication of two of her works in English is important (the other is My Mother Gets Married), but unfortunately, this translation misrepresents the text in significant ways. Women and Appletrees borders on brilliant in the original language--linguistically, structurally and thematically it was a totally original and totally ground breaking piece of fiction. Martinson quite literally wrote the female body. This translation makes the characters sound like some kind of Garrison Keillor-inspired Minnesotan Lutherans saying "ja" at the beginning of every sentence, instead of the edgy and impassioned proletariats that they really are. I would still recommend that you read the book for its insights into the struggles of the women of the working class--a rarity in literature of any national origin--but take the translation with a grain of salt.
Exceptional story of both rural & urban European underclass.......2000-08-02
Women and Appletrees is the translation of a novel by a Swedish woman writer. It is a marvelous and absorbing collection of descriptive writing about the human experience. This is a working class novel set in a time period when women had no reproductive options and little say in setting the course of their own lives. These individuals experience poverty, hardship, illiteracy, bad sanitation and the desperation of unmarried and too-fertile motherhood, both urban and rural. This is a captivating story about human survival, the perils of marriage, and finally, friendship. Adult themes throughout. NOT a children's book.

Book Description
LaRenna Belsas had always dreamed of the Kimshee life-style. These silent serving sisters of the Taelach military were known as much for their reckless mannerisms as they were honored for the dangers they faced bringing Taelach daughters to their raisers. LaRenna looked forward to taking her place among them, even though it meant an apprenticeship under an experienced Kimshee. Or would it?
"No Sister of Mine" is the first entry in a series of lesbian Science Fiction novels set in a world where humans are nothing more than a genetic trace. But that trace has left its mark-- namely a race of telepathic women who must fight to coexist with a patriarchal humanoid society who wishes nothing more than the eradication of its "white witch" cousins.
Customer Reviews:
Strong worldbuilding, good writing.......2006-07-21
G'Feller's first book, "No Sister of Mine", shines as a well-constructed SF book with a lesbian protagonist. The author does not let the romance aspect overshadow the thrill and adventure of an SF story, yet the romance is integral to the story. G'Fellers manages to create an intense love story beneath a thrilling tale of culture clash, terror, and revenge. Even the villian is fascinating and terrifying.
This is not a tale for the squeemish. Bad things happen in this tale, but it is by far one of the best in its genre and well-deserving of the 2006 Goldie award (SF category), finalist status for the Lambda Literary Foundation SF award, and nominated for a Gaylactic Spectrum Award.
Great read even for those that don't normally read SciFi.......2005-05-23
I don't normally read science fiction but I found this "first" book exceptional. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a fast paced story with fully realized characters. This story keeps your attention and has you wanting more. Can't wait to read the other books in the series.
new author, great story, can't wait for more.......2005-05-07
Lesbian Science Fiction doesn't come around often, but Jeanne G'Fellers' first novel is well worth the wait. No Sister of Mine is a fast paced, edge-of-your-seat far-future romp that will leave the reader breathless and wanting more.
WOW!.......2005-05-06
"No Sister of Mine" is a gripping tale that takes you into an exciting world of women. It is a wonderful read...colorful, believeable characters whose lives take hold of you from the very beginning and lead you down a trail of excitement and victory. There are "bad guys" to hate and heroines to cheer. It has everything from the magic of science fiction to the wonder of a love story. Wonderful book!
Book Description
This book provides an in-depth introduction to the principles of "A Course in Miracles." It first explains the central ideas in the ego's thought system of sin, guilt, and fear, and its defenses of denial and projection. Next, the Holy Spirit's thought system of forgiveness is explained, showing specifically how it and the miracle undo the ego's chief defense against the Love of God: special relationships. Included also are chapters on the purpose of Jesus' life, and the story of how the Course came to be written.

I See the Light.......2007-01-19
I have been a student of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) for almost a year and a half. So you can see that I'm very new at it. It's not the easiest book to understand, but before I began I had read Gary Renard's Disappearance of the Universe. I recommend his book unconditionally, by the way. But there were still gaps in my understanding. This tiny book by Wapnick is a perfect gem. He takes very complicated issues and breaks them up in such a way that my reaction was - "Of course!". For instance, he talks about how the course represents three different thought systems: One-mindedness (Heaven), wrong-mindedness (ego), and right-mindedness (Holy Spirit). Then he talks about the course being written on two levels (the difference between the One Mind and the split mind, and the difference between wrong and right-mindedness). He also uses wonderful images. One of my favorites is where he talks about the mind being healed gradually, but us not being aware of it and getting discouraged. He says, though, that we must think of it as going around and around a well. We are getting closer and closer to the bottom, but to us it seems that we are going in circles. I can't recommend this book highly enough. I'm on my second time thru it, and figure that I will reread it at least one more time after that.
I loved the very last chapter.......2002-09-03
The very last chapter is about Jesus, forgivness, and the crucifixion. For the first time, I understand how transcending effect can undo cause. By forgiving, I can undo the effect of an attack. A cause which had no effect wasn't actually a cause, now was it? If I can undo cause, I have erased guilt. Without guilt, there is only innocence. This is how we can absolve the world we see of sin. Amazing!
Now, consider this. This principle has to work both ways. If I can undo cause by not being effected, then I can create cause by being effected. I can feel loved, and elect you as the cause of it.
(Yes, it's still illussion, but what a delicious illussion. The reason it's illussion, is that in either case, I am secretly the cause... shhhh, don't tell anybody).
A simple overview of "Course" theory.......2002-04-29
This is a 135-page transcript of a May 9th, 1981 workshop led by Mr. Wapnick in Madison, Connecticut. It is broken down into five chapters:
CHAPTER ONE: "The Story of A Course In Miracles" - In this chapter Kenneth Wapnick gives an overview of the "scribing" of the Course and the two key characters involved: Drs. Helen Schucman and William Thetford. My favorite part of this chapter is the retelling of the highly symbolic dreams Helen had before the scribing began, and the trip that Helen and William took to Chicago. "And this is my true church," Helen heard when she offered to help a young lady she met in the airport; this lady was afraid because she had just left her husband and was about to take her first flight.
CHAPTER TWO: "One-mindedness: The World of Heaven" - In this chapter, Mr. Wapnick tells the reader that A COURSE IN MIRACLES represents three different thought systems: One-mindedness, which represents Heaven; wrong-mindedness, which represents the thought system of the ego; and right-mindedness, which represents the thought system of the Holy Spirit. Obviously, it is the thought system of Heaven - One-mindedness - that is discussed here.
CHAPTER THREE: "Wrong-mindedness: The Thought System of the Ego" - In this chapter the thought system of the ego is discussed. This includes: sin, guilt, fear, denial and projection, the attack-defense cycle, and the "special relationship" where one loves in another what appears to be lacking within oneself.
CHAPTER FOUR: "Right-mindedness: The Holy Spirit's Thought System" - In this chapter we learn that right-mindedness is based on viewing this world as the classroom in which we learn the lessons of forgiveness. The relationship between anger and forgiveness is discussed, as well as the meaning of the word "miracle" as used in A COURSE IN MIRACLES (the Course has its own unique definition of the word).
CHAPTER FIVE: "Jesus: The Purpose of His Life" - Jesus' role as the symbolic source of A COURSE IN MIRACLES is discussed. The Course's reinterpretation of the crucifixion is also discussed. What I found most interesting about this chapter is Mr. Wapnick's interpretation of Jesus' anger in the Temple. And I like this line: "Ultimately, we cannot accept the Course if we do not accept the fact that death is an illusion."
Throughout all of the above chapters, questions and answers are exchanged between the audience and presenter. I like this because it gives the feeling of having been there, as though you are not reading this book by yourself. This "conversational" format also provides an occasionally much-needed breath of air, since the topics covered can be very intense and the ego has great resistance to listening.
As with almost all books published by Foundation for A Course In Miracles, this book ends with a vision statement for the Foundation as well as an index to all Course references and their place in the Course proper. There is also a catalogue of other Foundation publications.
This is a cute little book with some powerful teachings, and is available for a very low price. I recommend it to students of the Course, or anyone wondering what the Course is.

Impressive breakfast every weekend!.......2006-12-30
I love this book! It has been the joy of my kitchen for a year and I'm completely satisfied with it.
The recipes are very diverse, original and accurate. This is the first book on baking, in which sugar content is reasonable(!), so you get perfect muffins, not too sweet. Indeed the authers suggest using butter in all recipes, but you can substitute it for canola oil without any harm to the taste or texture. I also put at least 50% whole-wheat flour to make the muffins more healthy.
Some recipes are for 20 or 24 muffins, so you have to cut down the proportions twice if you just want a dozen.
Good and inexpensive muffin book.......2001-02-17
This book has many good muffin recipes. It has many international recipes that are very good. The recipes are not low in fat though, using oil, shortening, or butter. They taste great though, and if you know how to make adjustments for lower-fat versions, then you're in business. Even with the full fat content, if you realize the fat content of one muffin, it is not all that bad, since moderation not elimination is the key to a healty diet. I highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Goos pictures, but irritatingly written........2005-04-17
This book is certainly good for reference. However, the author obviously thinks very highly of himself and his humour, which is often childish. He is also convinced that he *knows* what is good and what sucks, and if you disagree, it's because you don't know as much as he does. This may be partly because he grew up in the 70's rather than the 80's, and as such views these toys as a collector rather than as a fan. He also occasionally shows ignorance of the subject matter. For instance, he refers to Sectaurs as Warlords of Symbion, rather then Warriors. He is also unaware of the fact there was a Defenders of the Earth cartoon in the 80's, evidenced by his puzzlement at the very existence of such an action figure line. The frequent typographical errors are also irritating.
Must have for those who grew up in the 80s.......2003-05-08
John Marshall is THE toy guru, and his expertise shines through in this informative and entertaining guide. This is bound to take anyone who grew up in the 80s back down memory lane.
An extensive yet comprehensive book.......2000-06-26
Action Figures of the 1980s is very well written with alot of detailed information cocerning the toys from the 80s that we all remember and cherish! there are ALOT of colour photos 400+ and they are all very clean and proffesioanl! the idea of a price guide feels somewhat redundant seeing as prices change from day to day and from location to location you may end up paying alot more then what an item is truely worth whith the seller in question thinking that the price he is asking for it is reasonable and refering to an out of date price due to a rerelease or whatever!
All in all it is a good book though it is a shame that there aren't more books in this genre out on the market!

ASIN: 0553260855
Release Date: 1989-10-01 |
Book Description
This fascinating biography, written by on the country's foremost authorities on metaphysics, reached the No. 1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list. The Edgar Cayce story is one of the most compelling in inspirational literature. For more than forty years, the "Sleeping Prophet" closed his eyes, entered into an altered state of consciousness, and spoke to the very heart and spirit of humankind on subjects such as health, healing, dreams, prophecy, meditation, and reincarnation. His more than 14,000 readings are preserved at the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc., in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Customer Reviews:
There's more here than prophesy.......2004-03-12
The story of Edgar Cayce and other people with parapsychological ability is a most compelling and interesting phenomenon of mental capacity. That some people have this type of psychic ability demonstrates the vast power and perception of the human mind that warrants investigation. That this type of phenomena doesn't necessarily "fit" into mainstream psychological study causes severe conflict with generally accepted mainstream beliefs about the workings of the mind. As a consequence, the field of orthodox study tends to put people like Cayce into the catagory of fakes and charletans, at worst, and to ignore them at best. The study of this type of psychic phenomenon would go far in explaining the unknown regions of the mind. Scientific discovery necessitates following examples that are exceptions to the general rule. People with parapsychological powers ala Cayce provide great opportunity to track the great uncharted regions of the human psyche.
A Prophet and Remarkable man.......2000-04-07
One has to consider the time this occurred and the level of education of Edgar Cayce. He was incredible and I find it sad that people reading it today are unable to grasp the importance of his work. I think this is a book all thinking people should read and understand in context. If a reader is too literally minded or unwilling to accept the possibility of miracles then (s)he should read something else.

If a reader is too literally minded or unwilling to accept the possibility of miracles then (s)he should read something else.
Edgar Cayce Killed People.......1999-12-10
Most dramaticly and ironcally his own son
Very Puzzling life and book, successful cures from trance?.......1999-01-13
Although there is impressive testimony that many of Edgar Cayce's medical treatments proved to be successful, and are still used today, in one form or another, it boggles the scientific mind to be able to accept that such cures were imparted to Mr. Cayce through a trance like state of sleep and that during his waking hours he had no knowledge of the meaning or methods of his prescribed cures. There is much mumbo jumbo in the book, involved with trying to explain the meaning of his various predictions about the changes to take place in the world. Due to the vagueness of most of his predictions, one could pick a year and find some thing to apply it to to prove that he had great powers. His greatest supporters in today's world would seem to be the osteopaths who have successfully used his prescriptions and natural alternative treatments to help ailing patients. Would be interesting to hear a report from their view!
