    Book Description

Once again, Diana L. Paxson has beautifully elaborated on Marion Zimmer Bradley's beloved Avalon saga with this dramatic new installment, which for the first time reveals the past of the ancestors of Avalon, from their beginnings on the doomed island of Atlantis to their escape to the mist-shrouded isle of Britain. It follows the extraordinary journey of two powerful women whose destinies will shape the fates of their physical and spiritual descendants: Tiriki, a high priestess exiled by the fall of Atlantis, torn between the claims of love and duty, and Damisa, a young acolyte of royal blood, tempted by ambition to forsake her spiritual path.

Hints of this mysterious past have haunted all the novels of Avalon, but until now the full sweep of this rich history has not been revealed. Dramatic, peopled with the remarkable women who have always inhabited Avalon, and set in a world of enchantment that will sweep readers to a richly imagined time and place, Marion Zimmer Bradley's Ancestors of Avalon is another spectacular epic that is sure to please Bradley's many ardent readers.

3 out of 5 stars Took a long time to read.......2007-10-04

I had read all of MZB's books and got through them very quickly -- they were all so delightful to read -- books you could not just put down. Then, I read this one. While it was not an "awful" book like some reviewers say, it did take a LONG time to get through.
It was a complicated story and I had to reread some parts several times to understand what was being said or going on.
No, it may not be a true MZB book, but it was a decent read, if you have a lot of time.

3 out of 5 stars Not MZB but a decent read.......2007-07-22

I have read " The Mists" at least twice in the past 20 years, enjoyed as well "The Forest House" and "Lady of Avalon" and the story and characters are imprinted in my heart. Recently I came upon "The Fall of Atlantis" and although the amount of characters in such a small book was rather overwhelming, I managed to love and understand each of them as only MZB can make you do.
"Ancestors of Avalon" connects MZB's Atlantis story to Avalon and makes us believe that both places did actually exist. Diana L Paxson has her own style and takes a little getting used to on the heels of a MZB read. I had to console myself once or twice at her usage of modern vernacular that totally shocked me out of this wonderful world of the ancient past. All in all it was an entertaining visit to places that could have been real and an interesting method of weaving the two stories to each other, and to present day.

    3 out of 5 stars SO SO.......2007-01-19

Well, I can tell you that Marion Zimmer Bradley may have started to write this book....or had the idea of writing it, but Diana Paxon is not, and never will match the gift that Marion Zimmer Bradley had with words and story craft.

I couldn't get into it...I may finish it one day. Then again, maybe not.

    4 out of 5 stars I'm glad I read it but..........2006-08-09

As other reviewers have said this book does not do MZB justice. however I have read other books where MZB was not the only writer and felt I new what to expect.
For me I loved the book. It is true for several other books that I have read that once I get into a series I want to read everything in it, no matter how good it really was I still find myself enjoying the book.
It is true MZB is greatly missed and while I have read others In search of her likeness and still cannot find one. Of course I do not have as much time as I would like to read. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm reading MZB's Sword and Sorceress novels now in hopes of finding new authors.

3 out of 5 stars Worth reading but disappointing too.......2006-07-18

Tiriki and Micail are married to each other and are highly ranked priests on an island of Atlantis when their world is swallowed by the ocean in a volcanic eruption. Separated they make their way on separate ships north to the the island of Britain. Neither knows if the other is alive, and they must survive in radically different situations that will not only challenge their marriage vows, but also their view of their life's purpose.

In "Ancestors of Avalon" Diana Paxson weaves the story of the founding of the order of priestesses on the Isle of Avalon and the building of Stonehenge in with the fall of Atlantis. This is a moderately interesting book that tells a big story, spans about a decade of time, and answers a lot of questions raised by Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series. A good novel not only draws you into a cleverly conceived situation, but it makes you care for the people in the situation. Although I rooted for the good guys I was not emotionally involved. Paxson could have done a better job on character development. However, the book was fun to read during that hour before I go to sleep at night.

    1 out of 5 stars A Grave Disappointment.......2007-08-26

This book accomplishes the seemingly impossible: it breaks continuity with both The Fall of Atlantis (which it follows) and The Mists of Avalon (which it prequels), and it completes both of these feats while being a complete and utter bore.

The chief failure of this book may lie in how plot-driven it is. It seems as though the writer was so intent on getting through her plot that she forgot to devote any page-space to characterization at all, and was obliged to add bits and pieces of character moments at a later date. The fall of Atlantis is rushed through on the way to the actual plot, and has no emotional resonance. The emotional core of the novel rests instead with the separation of the main characters, Tiriki & Micail, and their desire to reunite. Unfortunately I found their love for one another hard to buy: readers are informed that this is a great love affair, but we aren't shown much evidence of it. Tiriki at least is a somewhat likable character, unlike Micail, who spends much of the novel whingeing.

The continuity problems are major: the book cannot exist in the same universe as Mists of Avalon. Paxton excuses this in the Afterword by pointing out that Marion Zimmer Bradley wasn't a stickler for continuity; She should have thought of her readers, instead.

I loved The Mists of Avalon, The Forest House, and most of The Fall of Atlantis. I stuck with the series through the diminishing quality of Lady of Avalon and Priestess of Avalon. Someone- the publishers, Paxton, Bradley's estate- seems intent on milking the franchise for all it's worth; But I'm done.

5 out of 5 stars neat take on history.......2006-07-09

Ancestors of Avalon picks up where "The Fall of Atlantis" leaves off. This is the book that gives more insight to the lives of the ancients in Atlantis, and the actual devestation and destruction of their lands. The story then moves to the Atlantic Ocean, upon the ships of the fleeing Atlanteans (and other Sea Kingdom peoples).

Following different groups of refugees, you find yourself immersed in ancient Cornwall, Glastonbury (Avalon), and Stonehenge (before it was built) from 4,000 years ago. The natives that are encountered are very interesting, and as much as possible the anthropological/archeological evidences as we know them are held in check with the story. The raising of Stonehenge is very enchanting, along with the building of the spiral path around the Tor. This book is a fun read into an ancient and magical past.

This is book #2 in "The Mists of Avalon" series, to be followed with "The Forest House."

5 out of 5 stars The best Dr Who novel - ever.......2001-06-28

Why has this site got so many reviews for the wrong books, dragging down its rating to their level? Managra is simply the best Dr Who novel ever written. Its dark humour is hilarious, the pace cracking, and the wit sharp and biting. The story takes place in a sort of Hammer House of Horror living theme park where characters from different periods in European history jockey for position (one of these positions is that of Official Antichrist). Read it, I urge you. Marley is the Sam Raimi of Dr Who novel-writers.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful reprise of fictional and historical characters.......2000-12-01

(Good Lord - this book has 8 reviews, 7 of which aren't about it - including 1 from me!)

The TARDIS lands the Doctor and Sarah in the 33rd century in a place called Europa, in which live a variety of beings called Reprises, who are recreations of fictional and historical characters. But Europa is more that a stage on which these characters act out new dramas...

A book that is full of literary and historical references, but as you read it there are layers within layers within layers. Things have a way of turning out to be not what you expected. And its fun into the bargain.

Give it a go, but be prepared to pay attention - this is not a book for casual readers.

5 out of 5 stars This highly unusual adventure will get rave reviews.......1997-01-28

What more can one say about Stephen Marley's "Managra" than that it is a masterpiece of not only the limits to which the "Dr. Who" genre can be taken, but also an exercise in highly entertaining speculative fiction. Marley's book is set on Earth in the far future, where the continent of Europa is an insane asylum populated by the power-hungry, the undead, and cloned copies of famous historical figures. Into this milieu steps the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane...and the fireworks begin

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite cookbooks.......2007-08-13

I've cooked from these recipes for several years, and I've used it so much the binding has given out. It's one of my favorite cookbooks, because the recipes are up to the Moosewood standards, but are not too time-consuming. A few of the recipes I make on a regular basis for my family. If Moosewood ever comes out with a sequel, I'll buy it!

3 out of 5 stars An Okay Place to Start.......2007-06-09

I bought this book because I had recently seen Mooswood restraunt featured on a T.V. cooking show. I have to say I was a little disappointed when I started going through it. So many of the recipes were so basic, it was more like "how to boil water if you are vegetarian". I guess it is a good place to start if you are new to cooking period, and want to be vegetarian, but it is not for a more advanced cook. I recommend Vegetarian Times Complete Cookbookor 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes: Delicious, Easy-to-Make, Healthy Meals for Everyone (1,001) This is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginner vegetarian.......2007-05-24

This book is great. Simple meals that take 30-35 minutes to prepare. Great for the person that is turning vegetarian or just wants to have a vegi dish once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Moosewood Cookbook.......2007-05-12

This is the most used vegetarian cookbook in my library. The recipes are reasonably fast, simple and tasty. I haven't been disappointed by a single recipe so far. Off to the side of each recipe the book gives you fuller menu options from other recipes in the book. It also gives you a brief description of just what it is that you are making. In addition to me being satisfied with the meals that come out of this book, my children (ages 4, 7, and 9) are also very satisfied. It is a big hit for the entire family. I find with most recipes that I can start making dinner at 5:00 and we can be seated and eating by 6:00. The recipes I've made so far are quite simple to make and most enjoyable to eat. My favourite recipe to date is the black bean soup. It is quick and easy to make if you use canned beans and produces a rich and satisfying meal that we all love. This is definitely a great cookbook for anybody, but especially for somebody that doesn't have several hours to spend on making dinner.

5 out of 5 stars Great - Good Food with Fast Recipes.......2007-04-30

I own a number of the Moosewood series cookbooks. This one is quickly becoming a favorite. The Avocado & Corn Salad, Spicy Corn Quesadilla, and Tomato & Bean Salad are my favorites so far. It's great to be able to cook a delicious veg. meal in under a half hour. Highly recommended.

This wine kit is an excellent gift to give to anyone you know who's a wine connassieur! It came with two books and everything else you needed for a blind taste test for a few people. At my Valentine's Day party, I hosted a wine tasting of several wines bought while vacationing in the Caribbean last year. The checklist was great for recording information. Everyone took their lists home so that they wouldn't forget the names of the wines and would remember to pick them up next time they're in the Caribbean.

An invaluable resource for collectors of South Carolina dispensary bottles from both a historical perspective and as a resource for the many variations of containers the system produced. This compilation contains an overview of the history of the system including the colorful creator (Gov. Tillman) and the events leading to and following the "whiskey rebellion". It recounts an interesting time in South Carolina history when prohibitionist compromises helped to create one of the most corrupt government-run businesses of the time.

The dispensary idea was sold as both a means to control the flow of alcohol and raise revenue for the state education fund...an interesting parallel as South Carolina currently embarks on building support for a state run lottery, also "to improve education".

5 out of 5 stars Again S. Isenberg makes it easy ! Beveling and Engraving!.......2000-11-27

In his latest book Seymour Isenberg takes on the mystery of making glass that sparkles in the light. In this teaching book, he covers glass engraving and beveling step by step. I learned from this book that correct preparation of the engraving equipment will be worth the time for the eyecatching results. Isenberg's well illustrated explanations of the shapes of the grinding wheels, how to mount them on the mandrels and comfortably manipulate the glass against the wheels make it easy to follow as one-two-three. The wide variety of effects achieved from five basic shaped wheels is amazing. There are many examples of the lines and shapes possible with explanations how to do them and patterns to try. There is a basic primer on how to score and break glass in preparation for engraving and beveling. Isenberg explains you don't have to do stained glass to enjoy stone wheel engraving. But if you need help in cutting glass, I highly recommend "How To Work In Stained Glass" 3rd edition to cover this in further depth. But I am surprised the Publisher has done this book a disservice by NOT INCLUDING THE WORD "BEVELING" IN THE TITLE OR BOOK DESCRIPTION. Almost all engraving is executed on beveled glass and here's the only book currently available that tells how to do it. With the new tabletop bevel machines available for hobby/small studio use, this book is an invaluable aid in learning the process. Again the photos are close-up to show exactly what is happening and how to avoid problems in making your own shaped bevels. The combination of both glass techniques--beveling your own shape and then engraving a design makes this hands on process very rewarding for the glass artist wanting total control. Seymour Isenberg's conversational style of teaching makes it easy to understand and enjoy engraving and beveling as another relaxing facet of glass work. Even though I haven't tried it yet, with this book in hand -- I think I'll be fine -- with some practice.

Mr. Graham has the unique approach to glass engraving that you do not see often. He describes the occupation in easy to understand language and the techniques seem easy to master. Because I read this book, I intend to pursue glass engraving as a hobby now and maybe something serious when I retire. Thanks Boyd.

5 out of 5 stars The essential, must have, glass engraving book.......1998-12-22

The explanations are clear and concise, and it covers everything from the basic tools you need to get going, first lessons and the basic cuts, how to build a drip table for water cooling, more sophisticated cuts, and quite a bit on polishing and displaying, and where to find glass, equipment, and supplies. Plenty of drawings and photographs which complement the lessons.

This book is simply the most bang for the buck of any book I've ever bought on any subject. And the pictures are well done, which is a ture rarity in a glass book.

                      Book Description

A collection of essays on John 6 illustrating various current approaches to biblical interpretation. To understand this chapter, one must deal with most of the issues that confront serious readers of the Fourth Gospel. Historical issues and questions regarding the composition of the Gospel, the nature of the Johannine community, the literary design of the Gospel and its theology all come to focus in a unique way in John 6. The essays in this volume are written by ten of the leading Johannine scholars in America, Australia, Europe and Scandinavia. The collection, therefore, provides an overview of current Johannine scholarship and a showcase for the various methodologies now being used in Gospel studies.

Now, in Anything Goes!, King takes an in-depth look at how North Americathrough the prism of the electronic and print mediahas gotten to the point where it is today. In an era when news rules, Larry King has the best seat in the house. With our world being shaped and reshaped by a dizzying cast of characters and a merry-go-round of incredible events--from the blockbuster murder trial of a football icon to the near impeachment of the US president, charged for lying under oath about sex with an intern--Larry King is the man who asks the questions we all want to ask and gets the answers that make tomorrow's headlines. Now, in this fascinating, fast-paced book, King takes you inside his world and offers his perspective on American culture in overdrive at the turn of the millennium.Anything Goes! is a whirlwind tour of the 1990s as seen through the prism of CNN's Larry King Live, as Larry faces the cameras and phone calls with Monica and O.J., Al Gore, George W. Bush, and, of course, President Bill Clinton. Along the way, King analyzes the frantic interplay between the media and events, as a US presidential election is played out on talk shows, policies are made on network TV, and life-and-death trials become the electronic wallpaper of daily American life.As Larry relives his most controversial and surprising shows, he looks for a pattern in the madness. He asks probing questions about the way society is being changed by technology and why the line between news makers and news reporters has become nearly invisible. The answers Larry offers may not be what we want to hear. But no one is in a better position to give them.Full of fascinating side trips through the realm of the famous and the infamous, Anything Goes! shows Larry and Bill Clinton swapping football talk an hour after the 1998 impeachment vote, a message from Yugoslavian dictator Slobodan Milosevic while NATO planes bomb Milosevic's country, and a series of on- and off-the-air discussions with actor Marlon Brando, who ended one interview by kissing Larry full on the lips.Whether he is gaining unprecedented access or providing an unrivaled political forum that mixes

Everyone else wrote an interesting, well thought-out review, but April Safara seems to be a total moron. Her review would even receive a failing grade in a fourth grade lit class. I'm surprised she was even able to read the book at all, considering how poor her literary skills are. Looks like you need a refresher course in Writing 101! Moron.

                            3 out of 5 stars Undecided..........2003-03-07

Larry King is usually the background noise during dinner time in my (single) household so I pretend that I know him rather well. So when I started the book I expected the wise and experienced uncle to provide some wisdom and tell me about invaluable experiences. Well, it did not live up to that, especially in the first half of the book. But every now and again - moreso towards the end - I could hear him saying what he was writing. Much in the beginning just does not sound like him.

The books offers a great overview of what moved the media during the 90ies: so, here is your entertaining history lesson - not entirely comprehensive but certainly the basics for the media small talk. He does not show off, he is honest with himself and he displays the very down-to-earth side of himself. Maybe it just lacks more wicked, unheard-of experiences that I expected to get a better rating. You got to have this "wise uncle at 9 PM EST" with him to like the book.

This book reminded me of a collage term paper being done at the last minute when you increase the font size and margins to try and stretch the meager text to the length requirement. I have never been a big fan of his interview show, but I was hoping given the amount of time he has been at it, he would have some interesting "during the break" type of stories from his guests. It turned out that this was not the case.

I would like to say that I enjoyed this book or at least found parts interesting or well written, but that would not be honest. I had to keep reading given it was the only book I had on a 9 hour flight. How can someone that has interviewed so many interesting and influential people over the years have this little to say? Thank goodness for the professional writer he hired or who knows if we would have even had complete sentences to read. Overall the book was dull, no insights and barely anything interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The world today in Politicians and Presidents.......2000-11-03

Well never having read a larry King book considering he wrote so many this book was great. It gave you inside edge on what larry king has seen, heard, and talked about in the years of his careers. It's was great reading about all the people he talk too. I would definely recommand this book to a friend.

4 out of 5 stars The King of TV Talk Continues to Reign.......2000-11-02

Kudos to Larry King (and Pat Piper) for their riveting account of the rich, famous and powerful during the final, tumultuous decade of the late (and unlamented) century. While "Anything Goes" provides fascinating insight into the lives of Washington's movers and shakers, it also gives a good glimpse of the talkmeister king himself, just a "poor kid from Brooklyn" embued with a rare gift of knowing whom to talk to, when, and what to ask. "Anything Goes" is a great chronicle of one of the most topsy-turvy periods in American history. It's also enormously entertaining.
