The selection of material for this book is varied like the women with whom I fly fish. Many different backgrounds, perspectives and opinions. It was a joy to read about them all. I hope that Holly Morris decides to put together another book like this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Funny and Delightful Book of fly-fishing adventures.......1999-07-28

I loved this book. I fished as a young girl and have been inspired to try my talents once again after reading this book of short stories. I found the stories to be humorous, and overall a great summer read!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written; humor, romance, and why we fish........1998-06-19

This book is not just about fly-fishing, nor is it just about women who fly-fish. The authors and editors have put together a wonderful blend of humor, romance, nostalgia, and the reasons we all fly-fish, male or female. The stories describe the intimidation factor of entering a male dominated sport, why they chose to do so, and what they have learned about life from the experience. It chronicles the journey through life with fly-fishing and describes entry later in life to become closer to a man, or other reasons. Reguardless of how long you have been fly-fishing or how experienced you are, this book will expand your horizons and give you a new look at our favorite sport. This is a worthwhile book for any fly-fisher and no library is complete without it.

But most promising of all, there was Wesley Higgins, the young man from Birmingham, who was there because he knew the legend of the ghost of Okeewana. All he had to do was immerse himself in the waters of the lake and he would find his heart’s desire. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

        IT'S A STICKY SITUATION!

Pleskit's quest to sample all things earthling -- especially earthling foods -- inevitably leads him to...peanut butter. He adores it. There's only one problem: He has an allergic reaction to the stuff that ends up making him feel incredibly romantic.

Before long, the purple alien is chasing girls around the playground, trying to kiss them. He gets a slap in the face, which snaps him back to reality. But the damage has been done. The school is in an uproar, and unless Tim and Pleskit can find a way to convince Principal Grand that it's not really Pleskit's fault, the world's first alien student may be looking for a new classroom -- on a new planet!

As in the first three books our yong heros get mixed up in a sticky situation that will keep you glued to the pages. I am one of the "I was a Sixth Grade Alien" colletion's biggest fans and this was one of my favs. I hope that you will enjoy the book as much as i did!

5 out of 5 stars The best book in the series so far!.......2000-11-28

I'm a big fan of Bruce Coville, (especially the "Sixth Grade Alien" books), and I must say, this is one of his best books yet. (Of course, I haven't read a lot of the newer ones, since I haven't had a chance to buy them yet.) A funny yet believeable plot, and also, Linnsy plays a more active part than usual, which is good. (She's one of my favorite characters.)

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Over Peanut Butter.......2000-06-07

I LOVED this book it is very funny, and I couldn't put it down. It has many of the same characters as in Bruce Covile's I was a Sixth Grade Alien #1. In this story Pleskit tries a new food from Earth- Peanut Butter. Whenever Pleskit eats Peanut Butter he becomes girl crazy. This causes a great deal of trouble in the school and almost ruins the mission. Can Pleskit and Tim save the mission? Read and find out. You won't be disappointed.

        Book Description

Over the past twenty-five years, renowned critic Robert M. Parker, Jr., has visited both legendary and fledgling wineries all over the world and has tasted hundreds of thousands of wines. Only a fraction of those wines have earned his highest ratings and are considered by him to be truly legendary. In his latest book, Parker brings together what he calls "the best of the best," taking readers on a personal tour of the wineries that have impressed him most with their dedication to quality, consistency, and excellence.

The World's Greatest Wine Estates pays homage to exceptional wines and the exceptional people who make them. These lavishly illustrated pages showcase 175 of the world's most accomplished -- and most spectacular -- estates. Parker goes be-yond the labels, bottles, and ratings to present the land, the history, and the dedicated artisans practicing their craft. Though they form a wildly diverse group, all of these producers "share an inexhaustible commitment to their vineyards, a passion to produce as fine a wine as is humanly possible, and a vision that the joys of wine are infinite and represent the pinnacle of a civilized society."

Parker begins with an overview of what makes a wine great -- the ability to please both the palate and the intellect, to offer intense aromas and flavors without heaviness, to improve with age, to reflect its place of origin as well as the skill of its producers -- and explains how he came to choose the profound wines he features here. He also offers insider tips for ordinary wine-lovers who want to get their hands on extraordinary bottles.

The heart of the book contains profiles of the greatest estates of Argentina, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the United States. Each region is illustrated with a full-color map and accompanied by an introduction explaining the general wine history of the country. In his profiles of individual estates, Parker offers essential geographical information such as grape varietals, average age of the vines, and density of plantation; details about the estate's history and techniques and the wines it produces; visiting information for those who want to see the process up close; and tasting notes on the best recent vintages from each winery. Each profile also includes photographs of the vineyards and the people behind the wines, and labels from their best-known vintages.

Complete with a list of up-and-coming wineries ("Future Stars") and a glossary of wine terms, The World's Greatest Wine Estates is a very special reference for amateurs and connoisseurs alike.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners too.......2006-09-28

There's much in this book that would fly over the head of a novice, but for someone interested in getting to know Bordeaux - really get to know Bordeaux - this is a great introduction (if you want to spend the money). Color photos demonstrate the beauty of the chateaux, and there is a wealth of information here. What vintages were considered good at what estate and why - that's one of the most important things a novitiate can learn, and one of the most difficult to pick up on the fly. Here it all is for everyone...even the seasoned pros.

4 out of 5 stars Only in your dreams.......2006-08-07

The contents of this great coffee-table book are mostly drawn from Parker's other publications. Mostly his other books on Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone Valley, and of course the wine advocate (Parker's famous bi-monthly review of the world's wines). It conatins some very nice pictures of Chateaux and related scenery. However, most (if not all) of the wine producers featured in the book produce wines that are unfortunately reserved to the super-rich due to their prices. In a way, this book resembles one of those beautiful coffee-table books about Ferraris, Porsches or super models, which showcase masterpieces only to be dreamt about by the common man.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely informative !!.......2006-06-17

This handsome book Provides the most authoritative
knowledge of the history, personality as well as the
effort of wine-making inside the world's most
        famous vinyards.
It is paticulary useful with the recommendation
        of outstanding year(s)/vintage associated with
        any given wine.

        5 out of 5 stars wonderfully entertaining.......2006-02-22

I was thrilled to receive this book as a birthday present from my wife. After leafing through and reading some of it, I was even more thrilled.

You gotta love Parker. The man loves controversy. Here, he writes a definitive book on the World's Greatest Wines Estates about 175 of them. What first came to my mind was, will my favourite wines make it on his list, or for that matter, what list will he compile as to not to offend anyone.

I for one am certainly not disappointed. He starts off by providing a guideline as to what makes a wine great. For instance, he tells us that wine has be both sensory and intellectually appealing, and that each sip has better than the previous, as well as other criteria, all very helpful.

The Bordeaux section alone is great. Imagine, leaving out Chateau Le Pin as one of the World's Greatest, when the Wine Spectator in 1994 declared Le Pin as #3 on their Bordeaux Greatest Estates. Hmmm. On the other hand, Chateau Leoville Poyferre did make it.

The US list is also not without any controversy. For instance, among notables that did not make the list were Joseph Phelps, Silverado, Stag's Leap, and Duckhorn , while Berringer and Shafer made the grade.

All in all a wonderful book. I was not too much bothered by the photography, which some reviewers thought were of bad quality.

2 out of 5 stars If I Had Flipped Through, It I Would Not Have Bought It.......2006-01-24

Parker (who is a GREAT wine critic) heavily advertized his book in the Wine Advocate mailings, indicating it was his only published work with color photographs. This enticed me to buy the volume, as well as to find out which estates he did not consider great by reason of their omission.

The photographs are pathetic. Couple that with the fact that his wine reviews are direct copies of his other published works (i.e., Bordeaux Wine Guide) and there is no reason to buy this work. I bought it, read it for a week, and then gave it to my community library

          Book Description

Elegant and utilitarian glasswares have been made for over thirty centuries. The manufacture of cut glass in America stems from a history that reaches back to ancient Egypt, while engraved glass was known in classical Rome. In this excellent new edition of a classic work, the author traces the American phases of this fascinating history by describing the products of major and minor manufacturers. See the American industry evolve from its early days of imitative work, through highly imaginative products in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, to a declining mediocrity in the 1920s and '30s. This book has been established as the "bible" in this field, and the addition of 150 new photos and fully updated text and pricing information make this edition the best yet. Glass collectors will treasure this unequalled reference.

Superior book on American Brilliant glass, July 3, 2007
By E. Amos (North Carolina) - See all my reviews

If you want a really good set of books on American Brilliant Cut glass you need Pearson's 3 volume set (Enclyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass). They are out of print and often expensive, even if used.

Although every single writer on this subject has made a few identification errors, Pearson makes very few, and does make corrections and additions in Volume 3, to his previous books. Some writers on this subject material have been calculated by some American Brilliant experts to have glass identifcation errors of up to 30%. By comparison, Pearson has far less errors.

Volume three "American Cut and Engraved Glass (Geometric motifs)" published in 1978, deals with geometic patterns arranged in alphabetical order starting with beading, blocks and bullseyes and combinations thereof. Canes, hobstars, hobnail, stawberry diamond, double cross cut, diamond, fans, flashed fans, flutes, stars, cross cut squares, zippers, pyramidal squares, prisms, panels, etc. are included in the over 700 illustrations of the various cominations of patterns. Pearson's schematic is very helpful for quickly locating and identifying cut glass patterns. There are sections on the colored or "cut to clear" ABP glass.

A pattern index for all 3 volumes of the set, is a the back of the book. A general index for all 3 volumes in this series is included. There is a Relative Value Guide and a Relative Value Chart. There are supplements for Vol. 1 (Geometric Conceptions) and Vol 2 (Realistic patterns), a supplement of corrections and addenda for previous Pearsons, and a bibliography.

The front part of the book also includes some short chapters on interesting happenings and experiences that the reader, collector or dealer will hopefully find amusing or educational in his pursuit of glass treasures. I found the chapter on whether to buy the damaged antique, very helpful. Dealers may find how to collect on a check returned for insufficient funds, amusing. (It is NOT your usual story.) There is also a section on etiquette for the buyer and seller of antiques. This is a book one can also read for pleasure as well as being a superior reference book.

Michael J. Pearson and his wife, Dorothy became well-known dealers of American cut, engraved and cameo glass. Although Michael had been a full time lawyer, he retired & devoted full time to the study of ABP glass and being an antiques dealer, in 1963. They also wrote: American Cut Glass for the Discriminating Collector (1965) and A Study of American Cut Glass (1969). Mrs. Pearson was also a member of the Appraisers Assioc. of America and became a recognized authority on glass, silver and china. They were both members of the American Cut Glass Association, which currently has a very helpful website.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2001-01-09

This is a beautiful book that has exquisite B&W photos of cut and engraved glass. Of particular interest is the historical information about the glass industry, as well as the fascinating text on the step-by-step process of making and cutting glass. If you are looking for an informational book about the cut glass industry, I would recommend this one. If, however, you are looking for a book that can be used as a guide when purchasing or selling cut glass, this is probably not the best resource. There were particular patterns I was searching for from a New York based glass company that were not mentioned in the book. In fact, of the approx. 60 patterns this company made before it closed in 1933, only one is referenced.

                          Book Description

In a career of only twenty-five years, Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed well over 300 pieces of furniture, the majority in two relatively short periods, 1897-1905 and 1916-1919. This book gives an unprecedented overview of Mackintosh's body of work and illustrates*with over 400 photographs*all of his major pieces as well as the interiors for which they were produced. The range of works presented here is quite remarkable, featuring not only the elongated chairs for which Mackintosh is most remembered, but also tables, bookcases, beds, bathroom fittings, and even a pulpit and an organ. The pieces here range stylistically from the more routine late-Victorian pieces of his earliest period, through the white-painted OEpook School' furniture of 1901-03, to the geometrical severity of Mackintosh's work for W.J. Bassett-Lowke in 1916-19. Mackintosh Furniture is a comprehensive look at a designer whose influence has only recently begun to fully realize itself, and is a must for both students and aficionados of design.

                                      Book Description

Now in paperback, this celebration of one of the world's most popular and innovative modern designers is a reasonably priced, comprehensive, and thoroughly illustrated survey of the artist's life and work. Here we are treated to magnificent Mackintosh sketches, paintings, and etchings, as well as photographs of his buildings, interiors, furniture, glasswork, fixtures, ironwork, tile, sculpture, kitchenware, fabrics -- even such novelties as a tea room menu, a grandfather clock, and a rustic garden gate. Author Elizabeth Wilhide explores the artist's early days, his inspiration and education, and his later works of mastery, as well as many of his lesser-known pieces. In addition, she includes a valuable list of Mackintosh sites to visit abroad. With interest in the Arts and Crafts style at an all-time high, and major exhibitions of Mackintosh work touring throughout 1998, this is a solid addition to any design and decor collection.

This book is a treasure! In The Mackintosh Style: Design and Decor by Elizabeth Wilhide, the reader is introduced to the multifaceted talent and visionary, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. His influence encompasses architectural exteriors and interiors, furniture and home furnishings, stained glass and water colors. The book contains beautiful color pictures exampling each design arena. In the text, the author entwines biograghical information about Mackintosh, his family, his work and his time, thus setting the stage of the Arts and Crafts movement in Scotland and Europe. Since I am of Scotish decent and showcase two Mackintosh watercolor reproductions in my livingroom, for me this book is a keeper!

                                            A paragraph from the preface:
The twenty-one outstanding artists in "Actors' Lives" were chosen, in collaboration with colleagues at Theatre Communications Group, from a list of four hundred excellent possibilities I compiled by scouring "Theatre World" from 1950 to the present, "Players Guide" and "Who's Who", collections of theatre programs at the Lincoln Center performing arts library, and the files of the Non-Traditional Casting Project. Whittling down the list was agonizing. Interviewing the chosen few was often as exhilarating as seeing their finest work onstage.
This is a surprising and informative book. I found that I knew many of the actors, but not by name. Again I was surprised to find such diverse backgrounds to what I thought were just one time TV or movie actors. Reading about any one actor is well worth the price. Yet you will not be able to pass even those that you never heard of. I found a picture of Peter Gallager [While You Were Sleeping (1995) ASIN: 6304765266] in the book even thought he was not on the list.
The actors covered in this book are:
Frances Conroy, Clayton Corzatte, Olympia Dukakis, Frances Foster, Josie de Gunzman, Anthony Heald, Richard Jenkins, Cherry Jones, James Earl Hones, Randall Duk Kim, Jane Lind, Joan MacIntosh, John Mahoney, Paul McCrane, Isabell Monk, Joe Morton, Howie Seago, Freda Foh Shen, Josef Sommer, Richard Thomas, Jeff Weiss
