Book Description
With its depictions of the downtrodden prostitutes, bootleggers, and hustlers of Perdido Street in the old French Quarter of 1930s New Orleans, A Walk in the Wild Side has found a place in the imaginations of all generations since it first appeared. As Algren admitted, the book "wasn't written until long after it had been walked . . . I found my way to the streets on the other side of the Southern Pacific station, where the big jukes were singing something called 'Walking the Wild Side of Life.' I've stayed pretty much on that side of the curb ever since."
Perhaps the author's own words describe this classic work best: "The book asks why lost people sometimes develop into greater human beings than those who have never been lost in their whole lives. Why men who have suffered at the hands of other men are the natural believers in humanity, while those whose part has been simply to acquire, to take all and give nothing, are the most contemptuous of mankind."
Customer Reviews:
Not exactly an uplifting read.......2003-07-03
I've read this book twice now. First in college for a literature class, and again 8 years later. Both times it depressed me. Granted, that is the book's purpose. To provide a realistic and tragic glimpse into the lives of some of America's least fortunate during the depression. Though it is interesting and well written, I can't say that I would tell my best friend to read it.
One of my favorites.......2002-12-22
This book is about people who have nothing to lose, so they can afford to take chances.
It's funny, sad and provocative. Yes, I know that some parts have been lifted from "Neon Wilderness" but it works for me.
My advice to anyone who's read the book but not seen the movie that's "supposedly" based on this book: DON'T.
You will be disappointed. The story is not the same. It's so different from Algren's book that Algren himself didn't even attend the premiere.
If you haven't read this book and are a fan of stories about marganalized people, then by all means, read it.
It shows the "downtrodden" as complex and real people.
Walking the Walk.......2000-12-15
Don't be misled by the title. A walk on the wild side? Sounds like fun, hey? Well, you can walk the walk, but you can't go home again, or if you do, you may be a little the worse for wear. Algren is a poet of pain. Highly recommended.
Algren's most polished work........2000-11-11
Country boy Dove Linkhorn, son of Fitz ( hell-fire preacher and cesspool cleaner ),defiler of women, smarter than he looks bum, leaves Texas for New Orleans where he fits right in for a while, with the depression-era cripples, prostitutes, pimps, flimflam artists, and prison-life.
Much of this book is a re-run of Somebody in Boots and Never Come Morning, with modifications. Unlike those books, the prose style is Algren at his most polished. Even so he overdoes it on many occasions where a simple statement would have sufficed. But redeems himself by pretty much avoiding the annoying switch in viewpoint within multiple character scenes that mar his other, otherwise excellent work.
Nelson Algren didn't write all that many books in his long career, a state of affairs that could be condensed into two titles: A Walk on the Wild Side and The Man with the Golden Arm.
A Neglected Classic.......2000-01-08
In a perfect world, _A Walk on the Wild Side_ would be remembered as Algren's best book, and would be read in American literature classes.
Algren is a much-needed antidote to both romantics who idealize the poor and to conservatives who feel smugly superior to the lower classes but have no real sense of the difficulties they face.
Its social significance aside, _Walk_ should be read by anyone interested in literary style. Algren's narrative voice--pugnacious, amused, and quietly outraged--explains why Algren has always been read by writers, even if a larger general audience continues to escape him.
(While it is true this novel reworks material from _The Neon Wilderness_, it is put to much better use here--read _Walk_ first!)

Book Description
When Kelric, a scion of the imperial family of Skolia, crash-lands his fighter on the off-limits planet of Coba, he figures it will be only a short time before he makes his way home. But he fails to account for the powerful matriarchy of Coba, the mistresses of the great estates who do not want the Empire to know about their recent cultural advances.First they take him prisoner. Then, one by one, the most powerful women on the planet fall in love with him!
Customer Reviews:
Absorbing blend of SF adventure, social commentary, and romance.......2007-06-07
Coba is the only human-inhabitable planet close enough for Skolian warrior Kelric to reach in his mortally damaged fighter. The Empire's heir is astounded, upon regaining consciousness with injuries from both battle and crash landing, to discover that this restricted world actually has a thriving Human population. It's restricted only because its people want it that way. They prefer to keep their freedom, and do without Skolian technology. Which won't be possible any longer, of course, if they let Kelric go home; because Kelric will surely tell his half-brother the Imperator the truth about Coba.
Deha Dahl, Manager of Dahl Estate, insists on rescuing the stranger and providing him with medical care. What to do with him after he recuperates presents Manager Dahl with a dilemma, though. On Coba, women rule and men keep to their ordained place in society. Females on this world are larger, stronger, and trained from birth to consider themselves biologically superior to males. Kelric doesn't fit into this paradigm at all. He's a warrior, his body enhanced by technology, and he's determined to go back where he belongs. Which Manager Dahl can't allow to happen - but what she doesn't realize is that every day Kelric spends on Coba will change her world, unpredictably and beyond reversing.
Author Asaro does a fine job of turning gender conventions upside down and inside out in her depiction of Coban culture. My only criticism of this otherwise absorbing blend of science fiction adventure, social commentary, and romance is one point on which I couldn't suspend disbelief. Did no man on Coba, Kelric included, ever suffer an episode of impotence? Not even under conditions where...well, never mind. :-) If I get more specific than that, I'll be committing spoilage; and I'd hate to ruin for anyone else a book that I thoroughly enjoyed otherwise. 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5.
Out of print?.......2006-09-02
This book is too good to be out of print! I need a copy for my library at home. It's engaging, complex, endlessly entertaining, and one of my favorites. Along with Primary Inversion and The Radiant Seas, this is one of Catherine Asaro's best.
I read this novel several times, and like another reviewer said, it stands up to repeat readings very well. On the surface the plot seems almost formulaic for a romance novel - A beautiful young spaceman crashes on a matriarchal planet and is sold from one queen to another. However, the gender reversal is not only refreshing, but offers keen insights into certain societal assumptions we take for granted. Plus, the bits of math & science that Asaro weaves into the game of dice that rules that world pull it all together.
Excellent World Building.......2005-10-08
This third novel in the Sage of the Skolian Empire focuses on Kelric-Soz's brother who goes missing-presumed dead-in Primary Inversion and begins about the same time as well. Kelric's Jag fighter ship is damaged during combat forcing him to crash-land on an off-limits planet-Coba.
Coba is a rustic civilization-similar to the 1800's america-ruled entirely by women. Coba is a Skolian world but through subterfuge has managed to retain an off-limits status to protect the inhabitants from becoming pawns in the Skolian Empire at large. Coba has a somewhat simple government. The planet is divided into 12 houses, each house is ruled by a "manager" who picks her successor from the girls within her house.
Kelric is rescued from the wreck of his plane and nursed back to health by the Cobans-once he begins to recover he realizes that he is in fact being detained indefinetely on Coba. The Cobans will lose their off-limits status if Kelric is able to tell his family or the Skolian Empire what Coba is really like. Men are a protected class on Coba-much like women have been historically in this country. The Houses of Coba once warred incessantly, but it was destroying them, now they all play Quis. Quis is much more than a game-it is politics, enterntainment and news on Coba-to be profficient at it is to be important on Coba-even for a man.
Kelric is first married into the "house" of his rescuers and introduced the game and concept of Quis. In a short time, Kelric becomes a Calani-a male Quis player of some renown and as such is then passed and persued from house to house.
While Kelric with his cybernetically enhanced body and brain are not understood by the less advanced Cobans he is valued and appreciated for both his physical beauty and his skill with Quis.
Kelric is a complex and easily likeable character. He more than wants to leave Coba-he needs to leave Coba. The food, water and even the air are damaging his cybernetic and physical systems-slowly poisoning him. It is causing him to be ill, malfunction, sleep all of the time and age. Yet, as he comes to live on Coba for 20 years- father 2 children there and become a concubine in many different Houses on Coba-he also comes to love Cobans and their culture and also does not want to see them destroyed upon exposure to the Skolian Empire. Ultimately Kelric escapes-as we know he must. Yet, his leaving is bittersweet for the reader as well as Kelric.
This book was excellent. The culture, the world-building, the characters, very well done. This could easily have been a femi-nazi slanted book, with men relagated to the roles history has often assigned to women-property, coveted, abused, passed along and married off with no say so-losing value due to casual sexual encounters-yet causing wars to be possessed. Asaro handles this story delitcately and never allows to assume a femi-nazi tone.
Good-but a little unbelieveable.......2005-02-05
I've read five of the Skolian empire books, and this one is probably the least believable and one of the most interesting.
In a world where politics are changed by a game, Calani, Kelric crashes and threatens to interrupt the unchanged society. He quickly learns and becomes extremely good at the game. He is purchased by the managers of the estates(the world is divided into estates run by female managers). He is miserable, abused, and rarely truly happy. It takes great courage and self sacrifice by another for him to finally acheive his goal and achieve relative happiness.
The plot was pretty good, but the managers were just slightly too eager to buy him, and a few of the things they did to attempt to win him over were too unbelievable. I think that the society was well described. It was overally enjoyable.
One-Book Wonder.......2004-05-27
Smoothly written narrative and intriguing concepts blend with Asaro's spice of romance and gender relations to create a distractingly unique story. It's a castaway tale-- a Gulliver's Travels set on a remote planet where women are the masters, and where Kelric, our hero, must learn to adapt or die. I think anyone who has read it will recommend the story for the game of Quis alone, which has so many facets that I confess I was thinking about it long after I had put the book down.

This book is dedicated to the entire senior class of 1978, to all the students who ever attended and/or graduated from Marthaville High School, and to all the ball fans who followed "The Team" through the years. This book is specifically dedicated to all my Marthaville teammates but especially the members of "The Team", those classmates who were also my teammates during my ball career at Marthaville. Book Description
Hawk's Last Case is a beaut of a detective novel. It's got everything genre fanciers crack the covers for: a private eye protagonist with a hard-boiled hide and a touchable heart, a secretary who calls him "Boss, " a full complement of Irish cops, close scrapes and a sense of danger that accelerates like a general's pulse on entering the War Room.
Customer Reviews:
New heroes, New myth!!.......1999-10-08
I'm a young writer who thinks that what Keith Kirts is trying to do is really important. His books have no affinities with the standard European novel, but are wholly American in a way that is excitingly obvious from the first page. The dialogue and descriptions never sound artificial to conform to some pompous idea of literature. Instead they are melifluously consistent with everyday speech, without abandoning the artistry of words. HAWK'S LAST CASE is just one in a long list of Kirts' unique masterpieces. His affection for the L.A. area comes into play again, this time as the setting for a "Who done it" detective novel. But behind the familiar chase is a fresh new world of Kirts' own making, due in part to his terrific cast of characters. Cable Hawkins, the detective, is more of a shiftless bohemian trying to have fun in life than a shrewd tank of intellect. His girlfriend has a risque aura about her, and claims to dabble in prostitution now and then. His client is a talented and sexy female jockey. And lurking on the perimeter of the story is the haughty effete ex-surfer guy who plays backgammon, Hawk's enemy. Kirts' insights as he narrarates the story are both humorous and astute, even poetic at times. Read it.

Customer Reviews:
Great food, time intensive to make.......2007-07-13
The recipes in this book are great, I think it gets more creative than a lot of vegan recipes I've seen and they usually turn out great if followed closely. That being said, I find that this cookbook suffers from the same issue I find with a lot of vegan recipes, which is that often the recipes call for a lot of ingredients. Often the recipes will have ingredients such as a vegetarian worchestire sauce that you need to turn around and make. In other words, I find these recipes time intensive. I think another good measure of how time intensive some of these recipes are is the number of ingredients required to make them, which is often around 15. When I have the time and feel like cooking, I bring out this book. But most days when I'm looking to make something fast I don't have the time.
The only cookbook you will ever need........2007-06-21
I have experienced several vegan cookbooks in my lifetime. This is definitely one of the better ones. I was looking for vegetable recipes, but came away with so much more.
Seriously, You will never even have to think of using animal products again with this cookbook. Ms. Robertson takes a vegan approach to classic recipes like New England chowder and Italian wedding soup.
There is also a huge variety of recipes from different countries and cultures, all meat/dairy free. I cannot wait to try the scallion pancakes with sesame seeds.
Vegan Planet is wonderful!
Excellent cookbook for Vegies.......2007-06-14
This book is the best Vegetarian/Vegan cookbook ever. With this book on hand you can throw out all others! Haven't had an "icky" meal yet from this book.
Get it and enjoy being healthy!
Makes Being Vegan Easy and a Joy.......2007-05-25
Truly a must have for anyone enjoying a vegan diet. So many exquisite recipees with unique flavors, textures and visual appeal. When I first told my husband I wanted us to go vegan, he said no way. But I bought the book anyway and have been cooking out of it for three weeks almost every night straight and my husband has been delighted with every meal and has not complained once and doesn't even know he's eating vegan! These are unusual meals that are not too hard to prepare if you have a well stocked kitchen, you need the right tools for the job and you need to be willing to shop frequently as a vegan for the fresh foods these recipees require, but the results are well worth your effforts guaranteed. As an experienced cooking enthusiast, I highly recommend!
A winner, among the best vegan titles in print.......2007-05-16
If you're only going to buy one vegan cookbook, this is the one to get. Despite being nearly the size of a Manhattan phone directory, _Vegan Planet_ never sacrifices quality for quantity. Everything I've tried here is outstanding. And, whatever you do, don't miss Robin's "Vermicelli, Chickpeas, and Vegetables with Creamy Curry Sauce" (p. 264).

Customer Reviews:
Beginner to advance.......2007-07-11
I have used this book for years. I found it easy enough to read and help me through my first few years of dealing with marine tanks. And unlike a lot of my books from the beginning this one did have enough "meat" in it to still be relevant as I progressed through the hobby. Overall the content is great and it covers the gambit of marine life. On a different note, the paper and print is of a really great quality as well. This book takes a lot of use and abuse at my house and it really is still in suprisingly good condition. I only mentions this because some of the "cheaper" aquarium books I have picked up throught the years are all falling to pieces. Hope this helped!
Essential but dated.......2007-06-24
Written by one of the foremost experts in the hobby, this is an essential book for beginner and intermediate marine aquarists. It covers the fundamentals of setting up, stocking and successfully maintaining a saltwater aquarium and does so in a common sense, easy to understand fashion. It is an approachable and well-written primer on the topic and is the best way to get started.
However, the book was written in 1999 and is now 8 years old. Remarkably, that means it is already out-dated given the rapidly evolving state of technology in this hobby. The author, Bob Fenner, frequently provides advice and suggestions to aquarists on an internet website and much of the information in his book is qualified or revised the advice he provides now. For example, he highly recommends that macroalgae calupera in this book but, while still recommending it some setups, cautions people today that this algae is not right for all setups due to a tendancy to take over tanks. Some of the modern trends in saltwater aquariums are also not covered in enough depth -- simply because they weren't a trend eight years ago.
Accordingly, this is a GREAT book to read as you begin your research on setting up a saltwater aquarium. Not only is it a first read, but it is a valuable resource that you will continue to turn to before, during and after setting up your aquarium because it is filled with useful advice. However, it is also advice that should be complimented by additional research with more up-to-date materials.
If Bob is reading this, I'd just like to say this: This book is incredible and I can't thank you enough for writing it. If you have the time, please consider writing a Second Edition -- the hobby would benefit from such an endeavor tremendously. Thanks!
Full of info.......2007-05-07
I bought this for my mom. She enjoys all the color photographs and the helpful information about setting up a saltwater tank. She isn't ready to start one yet but this was the perfect book to help her when she does. She especially appreciated the photographs of the different types of fish which helped her identify those she would like.
The Salt Water Aquarist Bible.......2007-04-10
This reference manual will guide you through the setup of your new salt water aquarium. You'll also find yourself referring back it later on.
Must read for ANYONE who wants to start a marine tank.......2007-04-10
I never write reviews, but this book is so amazing and wonderful that I felt compelled to write one. Book gives excellent and concise advice on all aspects involving the marine aquarium. A must have quick reference that will help you to become the best and most humane marine tank owner.

From the supplier: East Asia's bond markets have finally caught up with the rapid development of the region's real economy. Between 1989 and 1994, these markets grew by nearly 10% annually, which was twice the growth rate of bond markets in the US, the UK, Germany and Japan. At the end of 1994, bonds represented 22% of East Asian GDP. The impressive development of the region's bond and other securities markets has been aided by increased foreign portfolio investment in East Asia. Foreign investors have been encouraged by its stable exchange rates, sustained macroeconomic stability and open capital accounts. Financial liberalization in the region, particularly the elimination of extensive controls on interest rates and credit allocation, has also contributed significantly to the financial markets' development.

Fun and functional ways to display your kids artwork.......2003-12-13
Like me, you probably have overflowing boxes of artwork that your kids have proudly brought home from school that you can't bear to throw away. Valerie Van Arsdale Schrader to the rescue with her book MAKING CRAFTS FROM YOUR KIDS ART.
From easy to difficult, there is something here for everyone of every crafting level to try. The directions are step-by-step with accompanying photos to show you the original child's art as compared to the finished display product.
Some of the projects included are: cup & saucer printed with artwork, a magnetic message board, postcards, a canvas bag print, wrapping paper, tin frame, silk pillow, and even floor throws and wainscoting! Be forewarned that for many of the more involved projects you will need computer access, drills, heavy-duty cutting equipment like hacksaws, and for one, even an electric glass grinder! Fortunately, most of the cuter projects only require photocopies and transfer paper to work.

Book Description
Few theatre aficionados, even theatre historians, could come up with the names of many actresses known for serious dramatic roles before the 1950s brought Ruby Dee and other stars to the fore. The road to the professional dramatic stage was not easily traveled by Black actresses, but some did make the transition from minstrels and musicals to drama beginning at the turn of the century. For the most part even those who achieved significant critical acclaim were omitted from the annals of American theatre history. In this first study specifically on early Black actresses, Jo Tanner traces the evolution and progress of such stage pioneers, focusing especially on Anita Bush, Laura Bowman, and Abbie Mitchell, who achieved success on their own in the first three decades of the century and helped train a new generation of Black actresses while also serving as role models. In the process, Tanner uncovers racial attitudes and preconceptions of the period that forced Black actresses primarily into "mammy" roles. It took considerable fortitude as well as talent for these women to pave the way others would follow. Occupying a site at the confluence of theatre history, women's studies, and African American studies, this book will interest scholars and students in all these areas and will have to be taken into account by future writers chronicling American theatre history.
