Fox is a great writer and The God of Nightmares is a masterpiece. I loved everything about it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent writing and characters, not so great plot.......2002-11-27

I enjoyed Fox's memoire "Borrowed Finery" very much. This book, written before the memoire, covers much of the same territory, but the effort to turn what clearly are parts of Fox's own life into fiction doesn't work all that well. I had to laugh when I discovered Fox giving her own childhood to one of the characters.

All of the characters in "The God of Nightmares" are weird in one way or another, except the main character, Helen, who tells the story. She seems pretty ordinary until the last chapter when Fox tries to show us Helen isn't so nice after all. I didn't like this last chapter, which takes place more than 25 years after the main story. Fox tries too hard to tie things up and tell us what happened to each of her characters. I was especially irritated by the way she changed the husband -- but I won't say more about that as it comes as something of a surprise.

After reading "Zorachus", I had to get a copy of this book. It is available used, but I believe it will soon be re-released by another publisher with some revisions that make it more consistent with the Zancharthus series (I haven't read those...yet).

This book will make you wonder if true evil thinks the way that the high priest of Tchernbog does. That is, he feels remorse, but continues to attempt to purge himself of any conscience by committing worse and worse acts.

This is a great good vs. evil story, but the most evil guy used to be the most good. It's a great twist providing an entertaining action story and a lot to think about relating to repentance, free will, and the possibility of destroying one's soul.

4 out of 5 stars READ LONG AGO.......2004-06-24

I read this book in the late 80's where I learned to pass my "duty" time in the military with an occasional game of D&D. The title grabbed my attention in a bookstore one day, so I purchased it. It was my first fantasy read so I didn't know what to expect. Since then I have read numerous other fantasy novels, many with interesting characters and colorful or grim worlds, but few can compare with NOG when it comes to content that gripps you. If you've never rooted for the villain before, you will here...not so much for him to win, but for him to succeed in finding the light that is hidden somewhere in his darkened soul just one last time. Quite graphic and raw, Mr. Rogers does an excellent job in drawing us a world that's far too believeable. I've since lost the book, but will buy it again somewhere along with "Zorachus". Although I enjoyed it alone, I undoubtedly missed out on much content by not reading Zorachus first, so I'll have to get them both.

5 out of 5 stars Heed and read........2002-02-14

This book rocks! The portrayal of evil is in the truest form that I have ever encountered in a fantasy novel. The exciting saga continues where 'Zorachus' left off. The heretic priest is now hell-bent on total self-annihilation. His beliefs call for him to repent, but his soul refuses to let him. His solution to his dilemma is to bring the Dark Lord into his body, destroying the world and himself with it. His old comrades are now his worst enemies and will stop at nothing to keep the obsessed priest from succeeding. The book keeps you riveted until the very end, but is it really the end? Read and find out for yourself. Then read 'The Blood of the Lamb trilogy'.

The book explains the role of dreams in understanding ourselves, our God, and our task in life. the book is based on the author\'s investigation of a large number of dreams of his own over a period of thirty years. In contrast to the views of other dream theorists, he argues that dreams proceed from a supernatural source and are intended to incite the dreamer to move toward integration and wholeness.

                              Book Description

                              The God Project:
Something is happening to the children of Eastbury, Massachusetts... Something that causes healthy babies to turn cold in their cribs. Something that strikes at the heart of every parent's darkest fears. Something unexplained that is taking the children, one by one. Sally Montgomery has just lost her beautiful little baby girl. Lucy and Jim Corliss, bitterly divorced, have been reunited by the sudden disappearance of their son. They all know there must be a reason for the terror. But no one ever expected...The God Project.

                              Nathaniel:
Who is Nathaniel? For a hundred years, the people of Prairie Bend have whispered the name in wonder and fear. For young Michael Hall, newly arrived in isolated Prairie Bend after having lost his father to a sudden tragic accident, Nathaniel is the voice that calls him across the prairie night...the voice that draws him into the shadowy depths of the old, crumbling barn where he has been forbidden to go...the voice - chanting, compelling - he will follow faithfully beyond the edge of terror...Nathaniel.

                              Perfect Nightmare:
Every parent's nightmare becomes reality for Kara Marshall when her daughter, Lindsay, vanishes from her bedroom during the night. The police suspect that the girl is just another moody teenage runaway, angry over leaving behind her school and friends because her family is moving. But Lindsay's recent eerie claim - that someone invaded her room when the house was opened to prospective buyers - drives Kara to fear the worst: a nameless, faceless stalker has walked the halls of her home in search of more than a place to live.

                                    3 out of 5 stars Nice book.......2003-01-20

Got a lot of cool short stories, but some can be utterly boring to read. I still, however, can't find a 40k novel that shows the reality of the table top.. I mean.. they sure make space marines overly powerful(One squad can beat a bunch of scorpians and guardians with only 3-4 loses?? They only have 3+ save!!), eldar utterly [stink], and imperial guards too good to be true...

Well, you might want to be a 40k mania to enjoy this, but it's a good read anyways...

This and Into the Maelstrom are a collection of short stories. If you think 40k is for you this will give you an all round view that can't be beat. Some of the stories were exceptional but with short stories they can't all suit you. I liked both and would recommend them to anyone. Sorry could not give Maelstrom all the credit.

If you like the table top game Warhammer 40k, and like to learn about the backround of the races, this is a good book for. It gives a unique perspective on thingss from the space marine point of view. If you haven't played 40k.....you probably should pass.

In recent years, a revived and burgeoning interest in wholesome, locally baked bread has swept the country, with bakeries springing up in small towns and major urban areas alike, producing an astounding variety of interesting, crusty, tasty, handmade breads. The Bread Builders explains the grains and flours, leavens and doughs, the chemistry of bread, and the physics of baking in a big book filled with helpful drawings, photographs, recipes, and tips. In a unique angle for a book on baking bread, it also includes detailed diagrams and instructions for building your own masonry bread oven from scratch.

As Laurel Robertson, author of The New Laurel's Kitchen says, "This book is ice cream for a baker! We visit legendary bakeries, meet wonderful people, learn all sorts of fascinating scientific information with practical usefulness in bowl and oven, and best of all, get the skinny on masonry ovens, the cherished fantasy of us all." The enthusiasm of the authors in their search for the perfect loaf of bread permeates this detailed but lively and accessible book, and will offer much of use to both amateur and professional bread makers. --Mark A. Book Description

Creating the perfect loaf of bread--a challenge that has captivated bakers for centuries--is now the rage in the hippees places, from Waitsfield, Vermont, to Point Reyes Station, California. Like the new generation of beer drinkers who consciously seek out distinctive craft-brewed beers, many people find that their palates have been reawakened and re-educated by the taste of locally baked, whole-grain breads. Today's village bakers are finding an important new role--linking tradition with a sophisticated new understanding of natural levens, baking science and oven construction.
Daniel Wing, a lover of all things artisinal, had long enjoyed baking his own sourdough bread. His quest for the perfect loaf began with serious study of the history and chemistry of bread baking, and eventually led to an apprenticeship with Alan Scott, the most influential builder of masonry ovens in America.
Alan and Daniel have teamed up to write this thoughtful, entertaining, and authoritative book that shows you how to bake superb healthful bread and build your own masonry oven. The authors profile more than a dozen small-scale bakers around the U.S. whose practices embody the holistic principles of community-oriented baking based on whole grains and natural leavens.
The Bread Builders will appeal to a broad range of readers, including:
                                    • Connoisseurs of good bread and good food.

                                    • Home bakers interested in taking their bread and pizza to the next level of excellence.

                                    • Passionate bakers who fantasize about making a living by starting their own small bakery.

                                    • Do-it-yourselfers looking for the next small construction project.

                                    • Small-scale commercial bakers seeking inspiration, the most up-to-date knowledge about the entire bread-baking process, and a marketing edge.

I was looking for a book that would help me understand how to build a masonry oven. This book provides that along with much much more. The detail in the book regarding bread making is excellent and I am certain I will read this book many times as my experience grows. I consider it an excellent book for anyone interested in breadmaking.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who really enjoys fresh bread. I wore out a bread machine and learned to knead all my favorites by hand. This not only explains every part and ingredient's role in making bread, it also has all the description and scientific explanation to build an outdoor bread oven. We're planning on building an outdoor kitchen and the bread oven in this book will be a part of it.

I purchased 5 of these books one for me and four for friends. I was phoned and thanked for such an "interesting and illuminating gift". This book is honest, sensible, healthy and really useful. I am so glad I was advised to get it from a sourdough baker in Australia!! Yes it is better than Good.

The only thing I would add to all these other laudatory reviews is this:

Be careful before you order this book. There is a good chance you will be overtaken with equipment lust and just HAVE to have a masonry oven in your backyard!!!

Seriously, it's a great book. If you're at all curious about old-fashioned leavened bread as opposed to the baloony-yeasty variety, check this out.

This books is excellent...gives detail, explicit descriptions about the entire science and process of bread building!! I have read this book over and over and each time I learn more than I did before. It is an easy to read book, there is just so much detail on everything. The recipe testers for "Cooks Illustrated" (a fabulous magazine for very serious cooks) used this book to help refine their bread recipes!! A must have for bakers!!! Also a good book for recipes is "The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book."

While not a cookbook solely for gingerbread, a recipe for it can be found on page 205 in the 1991 edition (Aunt Iva's Gingerbread).

This is a delightful cookbook of a general nature with an added southern and Texas flair of small town closeness with illustrated drawings of the architecture of Waxahachie, Texas.

Recipes encompass the basics of a general cookbook, but also offers many southern, Texas, and southwest recipes. Some are ununsual.

It is divided in categories and there is also an extensive index in the back.

The Spectrum awards fill an important niche in the art world, by recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of fantasy artists. Spectrum 4: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art includes all the juried work from the Spectrum awards for 1996--and if this collection was any indication, it was a banner year. The book itself has an excellent, art-centered layout that keeps commentary to a minimum and lets the individual pieces speak for themselves.

Expect to be dazzled repeatedly by the sheer variety and quality of the work anthologized here. Spectrum 4 does a fine job of demonstrating how much variety exists in fantasy art. Alongside the ever-present fantasy standards (dragons, fairies, vampires) you will find highly original, challenging works of often-extraordinary breadth. Highlights include brilliant pieces from James Gurney's Dinotopia, Rafael Olbinski's haunting Calendar, and this year's Grand Master Award winners Leo and Diane Dillion. This book is sure to satisfy art lovers craving the bizarre, the terrifying, and the spectacular. --Brendan J. LaSalle

                                      5 out of 5 stars Just Amazing~!!!.......2007-03-20

I vividly remember the first time I saw this book at the local comic book store. Wow~ Just amazing, it blew my brains out. There is no other book like Spectrum series books. Book features full color drawing, paintings and sculptures by fantastic artist from all over the world. You will see so many styles and techniques that you never seen before. This is a must for Artist, Illustrators, and Art Directors.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Pure magic........1998-07-18

Almost any one of the pieces in this collection is worth the price of the book. There are no monkey swathes of paint against white canvas here, my friends. No, here are works that will quicken your breath, accelerate your heartbeat, and ignite the synapses in your mind. And as my fellow reviewer commented, this book is a wellspring of inspiration. Just flip the pages and see for your self. Works like "Number 16" and "Prudence II" present this point more eloquently than I ever could. I have only one pique. There was no art from any of the Galerie Morpheus artists like Giger, Yerka, and De Es. Despite this, I urge all fans of SF and Fantasy art to buy this book. You won't be dissappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Endless source of inspiration for artists........1998-03-27

Spectrum 4 is one of those books that artists turn to when ideas are at a premium. The artwork is so voluminous and diverse in character. Every possible stylization of fantasy art is represented. Some works are intense and mysterious, dark and brooding. While others follow a campy, comic book hero genre. My favorite works are more of an illustrative fairy tale approach. However, I find this book to be a wonderful resource for those times when the well is running dry.
