Book Description

From the bestselling author of Good Hair and The Itch comes a novel about a modern woman living in -- and acting out -- her role as an upper-class African-American suburban wife.

Ina West is caught between the life she thought she was supposed to lead and the dreams she gave up long ago. Raised by loving but imperfect parents, Ina grew up a free spirit, getting a fine education and spending her twenty-something years as a photographer in Manhattan. But when family crisis and financial burdens came her way, Ina sought comfort in the arms of Jay Robinson, a hardworking businessman who occupied the safe, privileged world of the African-American upper middle class.

As Jay's wife, Ina has it all: the lavish home, the SUV, the soccer games...until one day Jay walks out of their marriage, leaving Ina with no one left to trust but herself. How she manages to raise three children, take up her old career, rekindle an old flame, and celebrate her newfound independence is what Acting Out is all about. By turns heartbreaking, uplifting, and wry, this novel will resonate for any woman who has struggled to find her path in life.!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent novel for the creative black woman!.......2007-03-03

I suppose Ina's story isn't for everyone -- many a hardworking woman would call her an ungrateful whiner. So maybe this is a book for the more eclectic and artistic of us, those of us like Ina who have a hard time finding a place where we fit in, or where we don't need to fit. Because I understood the temptation to mold yourself to fit the life offered to you, I probably run the risk of over-rating this novel.

In any case, I understood both Ina's struggle as an artist, her guilt of not being satisfied, and I was very empathetic towards her tendency to lose herself in the process of raising her kids. This is a novel that does not trivialize anything about the life of the creative, artistic black woman, and I can't believe I waited so long to read it.

4 out of 5 stars It's Cool..........2006-07-12

I'm a big fan of her work,so I guess you can say I'm already somewhat biased. Anyway, while overall it was a good book, the sudden jumping to different events I didn't feel. Also, it did not have as much depth as her other works. However its still worth the time to buy & read.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2005-06-21

This book is not one of my faves, but I gave it 4 stars because it was pretty good and Benilde Little can do no wrong as far as I am concerned.

I have been on a 'reading hiatus' for the past two years, but I came back to myself on Friday after learning that Ms. Little has a new novel out. Since I already had this book, I decided to read it before buying the new one. I read it in a day and a half so it definitely held my attention, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed her other two novels. Something was missing that I can't quite put my finger on.

Could it be the absence of my beloved Miles Brown? I didn't think that Ms. Little could have a book without that man. I love him!! Oh well, I see that he is wreaking his own special kind of havoc in the new book, so I'll have to get my Miles fix there.

3 out of 5 stars It was ok.......2005-05-07

This book was ok, it was about a lady who is going through marriage problem, job problems and just trying to find out what she wanted in life. I really didn't like this book as much as I liked the author's first two novels. I thought the the main chracther of the story complained to much and that her life was not all that bad up into her husband did her wrong. I wished her dirty little secret would have come out in the book also.

3 out of 5 stars MOVING AND REALISTIC...........................2004-04-10

Moving tale of wife and mother Ina who seems to have it all--beautiful family, hardworking husband, million-dollar house in the 'burbs...until one day her husband Jay announces he is leaving..and walks out, leaving her to care for and raise their three children. Her husband has left her for another woman, and Ina is left to "find herself." Having devoted years to her familial role, Ina soon realizes the her entire identity is intricately tied to those roles of wife and mother. When the realtor arrives at their home and Ina discovers that the money is also gone, she also recognizes that there will be a significant financial adjustment to make. Soon, their house is sold and she and her children move into a much smaller home in a different part of town---and Ina realizes that she is about to start her entire life over.

Readers will appreciate the realism that Ms. Little brings to her stories and her characters..; although not as intriguing as Good Hair and The Itch, this is a serviceable story made even more so by the author's gift with the pen.

Book Description

The last thing Wallie Smith remembered was a fog of hospitals, grim-faced doctors, and pain. So when he woke in the body of a barbarian swordsman, attended by a beautiful slave girl and a wizened old priest nattering about the Goddess, he assumed it was a fever-dream.

But the World could not be dismissed so lightly. A naked little demigod called Shorty explained that the Goddess needed a swordsman. If Wallie undertook the job and succeeded, all that World had to offer would be his. If he refused, the results would be...unpleasant.

Wallie was not convinced, but Shorty was exquisitely persuasive. Soon Wallie found himself bearing a magnificent sword, with no idea how to use it -- and the servants of the Goddess were out to stop him.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2007-05-02

I have read multitudes of fantasy series to date and intend on reading many more. Very few series pulled me back to read them again(there are so many new books to read why read one you know the ending).
That being said I have read this series three times and will probably ask the Library, in a few years, to yet again search through all their affiliates to find the series for me again.
Many have written here about what the story line is. I am here to tell you even if you are a border line fantasy lover, you will love this series.
It will make you smile and laugh out loud. It will make you feel the characters in a way all fantasy writers strive for.

Last thought; how can you not love the thought of waking up, after being a practically dead chemical engineer, as the best swordsman in the world!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Adult Fiction.......2005-07-03

I put off reading this book for a long time, by the time I finally did read it I was glad I did. Dave Duncan crafts the most unique and interesting fantasy world I have ever experienced. It is based mostly on one premise, how the lack of something (I won't say what that something is) can change how a world/culture developes.

The cultures and world is amazing. The characters compelling, the plot enveloping. Any fan of fantasy literature should read this series.

The only bad thing is that due to publisher conflicts it is out of print. Used copies can be hard to find. There are ebook versions available though.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be reluctant to read this book!.......2005-02-06

I am new to the fantasy world of books, I am a mystery reader convert who had not even realized that fantasy/science fiction would be something I would enjoy. Dave Duncan has a talent of ensnaring the reader within the first 30 pages of his books- by then you are hopelessly enthralled or ready to move on to something else altogether. I, for one, have yet to move on as I find this author to be extremely good at his chosen professon. The first printing of "The Reluctant Swordsman" was in 1968- three years after I was born. But this novel is endearing no matter what age you may be. The characters are believable, and Duncan's style of intrigue introduces you to a host of characters that keep things going at a steady pace. I read this book in one day! I also have ordered the other two books in the series- because I definitely want to follow these stories to their end. As always, this is another of Dave Duncan's brilliant stories full of lessons learned and morals to live by.

5 out of 5 stars A great Series.......2004-12-27

Ok picture yourself in a hospital, having fevered dreams and possibly dying. Suddenly you come to, your naked, there is a slave girl, and your in a barbarian body Conan would be proud of. What's the catch? You have to serve a Goddess and fix a problem in her world only your particular talents can seem to solve; a combination of our world knowledge and skills the body you now possess contains. To help you in her quest, you are given a sword of legend believed to be lost and are the most powerful swordsman to ever grace this world, an enthusiastic if clumsy apprentice, a beautiful slave girl and her baby, an aged priest, and a playful and sarcastic mini-god named Shorty. If you succeed, anything you could possibly imagine will be yours; fail and death is certain and assuredly painful. Where do I sign up do you say? Well Wallie Smith, isn't sure he's the man for the job. In a world where violence is the standard fare, swordsmen are the enforcers of the goddess's law, slavery is common, magic abounds, and to complete the quest make a prophecy come true,Wallie Smith sure has his work cut out for him.

5 out of 5 stars An essential fantasy series.......2002-12-09

Anyone who reads the fantasy genre has read a story of this type: person from Earth is transplanted to other world. The Seventh Sword, however, plays with the conventions of this type of story a lot, which makes the story far more unique, thought-provoking, and fun than any of the others. Wallie is the antithesis of the fantasy hero--a peace-loving intellectual at heart, an unconventional teacher and a trickster, driven by necessity to do things he hates the thought of.

If you read this series (and I urge you to, several times), pay attention to the Hamlet references, the repetition of "power corrupts", and the water/jewels imagery. These are books that reward deeper readings.

4 out of 5 stars Bizarre and imaginative essays.......2004-11-27

When most people write conspiracy theories, they are grounded in what most people consider "reality." Not so with Rossi. He bases his theories on pulp fiction, fantasy and sci-fi. Instead of going onto the typical areas (like JFK, Freemasons, Templars), he reimagines Greek gods through nanotechnology, the Tunguska explosion as the result of a time travel experiment, Hypatia moving the Library of Alexandria into hyperspace, and other more bizarre theories. In the hands of a lesser author, they would be dismissed as the rantings of a madman. In Rossi's hands, you feel like there is be a kernel of truth to the theories. You might not believe all (or even most) of them, but you may look at things differently after reading it.

      5 out of 5 stars Universal Unhistory.......2004-07-11

Ever wondered what boy scouts are really up to? Where all the dinosaurs went? How Robert Heinlein halted the Mongovian invasion of 1938? Who Genghis Khan's spies in Europe were? And what the heck is wrong with California?

Matthew Rossi, who may share a psychic link with people like Avram Davidson, Jorge Luis Borges, Umberto Eco, Charles Fort and H.P. Lovecraft, endeavours to answer these and other perplexing questions in the 35+ strange short essays collected in _Things That Never Were_. It is fun and clever and disconcertingly insane; and no matter how erudite the subject matter may be, Rossi's tone remains informal and unassuming throughout this guided tour of the ten dimensions of the Sephiroth. If the 10,000 volts you've been passing through your head are no longer enough to get you off, this frantic weaving of fact and fiction may just be the ticket to deliver that extra jolt you've been craving for.

5 out of 5 stars A staggering stagger through contradictory worlds.......2004-02-25

The introduction by Paul Di Filippo sums it up best - "Rossi's several incompatible mindchildren aren't fighting. they're violently screwing, and out of this brain-intercourse is going to arise an unpredictable hybrid of startling portent."

I've never enjoyed a book more. I've never been more confused by one. It's not a simple book, but it is a good one. If you enjoy odd writing, this is one of the best I've come across.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work of...?.......2003-10-21

Any discussion of Matt Rossi's book invariably includes some discussion of categorization; where do we place a book which leaps from Tunguska to the hollow earth and back again via express tesseract? The essays contained herein might seem disparate to the casual observer - but if read with an eye to comprehension, one can see a common, nascent thread linking them all- something along the lines of a ley line burning brightly in the darkness. In and of themselves, the works stand alone and stand as plainly informative or as speculatively imaginative as the reader can bring to them. There is simply no end at the end of Rossi's story - only more dimensional vortices to fall through.

      Book Description

At one time, Italian wines conjured images of cheap Chianti in straw-wrapped bottles. More recently, expensive “Super Tuscans” have been the rage. But between these extremes lay a bounty of delicious, moderately priced wines that belong in every wine drinker’s repertoire.

Vino Italiano is the only comprehensive and authoritative American guide to the wines of Italy. It surveys the country’s wine-producing regions; identifies key wine styles, producers, and vintages; and offers delicious regional recipes. Extensive reference materials—on Italy’s 300 growing zones, 361 authorized grape varieties, and 200 of the top producers— provide essential information for restaurateurs and wine merchants, as well as for wine enthusiasts.

Beautifully illustrated as well as informative, Vino Italiano is the perfect invitation to the Italian wine experience.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to Italian Wines.......2007-07-09

Clear and concise, this guide clarifies a complex subject - the history and present state of Italian wines. While it is objective in its recommendations, anecdotes of regional Italian life add the human interest elements that make us care about Italy and its wines.

this book is a very nice read. the anecdotes showed good referance to the italian lifestyle. showed through knowledge of Italian wines. also had very interesting recipes throughout.

5 out of 5 stars A different sort of wine book.......2006-12-09

This is a different sort of wine book, one whose
peculiarities are perfectly suited to its subject.
Italy produces more wine than any other nation and
consumes more wine per capita. It is (Greece aside)
the birthplace of civilized winemaking and everyday
wine drinking too. Italians drink more wine too,
consuming annually something like 16 gallons per capita.
If you remember that per capita means 'for every man, woman
and child" and that 16 gallons annually is almost 2
bottles a week, the figure is quite astounding.

So it's peculiarly paradoxical that for centuries, Italy
produced and was known for some genuinely terrible wine.
The bad wine came in part form bad growing techniques. If
grape growing was bad, wine making was worse and there was
little reason to improve it. Bad transportation and a
generally impoverished peasantry ruled out competition
among producers. There was no domestic urban middle class
of the sort that bought and demanded French wines. Worse
yet there were no wine-poor neighbors whose tastes and demand
      could shape a winemaking industry.

About thirty years ago, everything changed. Returning the
favor of 1492, Americans discovered Italy. The discovery was
multi-faceted and so is this book.
Along with Italian wine, we went crazy for the country,
the food, the people, the design and the culture. Vino
Italiano is about all of these things.

There are nineteen chapters each devoted to a region and
you can read them like short stories. There's a brief
cultural historical introduction followed by a discussion
of red, white, sweet and sparkling wines, then a list of
regionally important grape varieties. There are some
entertaining notes on wine tourism, some suggested tastings
and finally, some simple recipes from the region.

For the encyclopediacly inclined, useful appendices
include a listing of grapes by variety, a directory
of DOC and IGT zones and a short list of producers.

A book that will add to your enjoyment of its subject.

--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the forthcoming novel bang BANG from Kunati Books.ISBN 9781601640005

5 out of 5 stars In "Vino Italiano" veritas.......2006-11-10

While "the book includes historial wine information and regional maps as well as Italian travel information and recipes", it also includes invaluable information on winemakers and producers. It also takes the mess that is Italy and cleans it up for us so that we can decipher and understand it. In that it is similar to Clive Coates "Cote d'Or".

4 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject.......2006-11-05

Believe it or not, there is a dearth of information about Italian wine both in books and online. Vino Italiano is a well thought out and much needed book on the subject. I agree with other reviewers who have pointed out that it is somewhat difficult to describe. This is due to the fact that the book includes historial wine information and regional maps as well as Italian travel information and recipes. Although this may sound a bit ill-defined it actually works -- you get all the facts and a feel for Italian culture at its best. Consider it your appetizer, primo and secondi all in one!

An invaluable language manual for people who need to communicate with dogs, How to Speak Dog is far more than a simple training guide. Author Stanley Coren discusses at length the evolution of language in many species, and focuses as much on body language as he does on verbal communication. This is a man with his own theories on language development--when disagreeing with Chomsky or Darwin, he backs up his arguments with plenty of thorough, firsthand experience.

Separate chapters devoted exclusively to interpreting the movement of tails, ears, and bodies are fascinating, and can often provide surprisingly quick insight into canine behavior. There's a tremendous difference between showing affection and showing dominance, and humans have a strong tendency to misread our dogs' behavior and reward them in exactly the right way to ensure the continuation of frustrating behavior. Coren maintains that dogs can often learn far more words than we give them credit for--certainly, we've all seen pooches go bananas at the words walk and cookie, but he also suggests we watch for learned behaviors from certain words. Perhaps office gets your spaniel waiting by the door, or baby results in your terrier checking in on your child's location--you may just think it's cute, but actually, it's a sign of your dog's linguistic ability.

Whether you own a dog or two or work in the field of animal care, this manual will be a most informative read and is sure to have a positive effect on the relationship between you and man's best friend. --Jill Lightner

        Book Description

        Parlez-vous Doggish?

At long last, dogs will know just how smart their owners can be. By unlocking the secrets of the hidden language of dogs, psychologist Stanley Coren allows us into the doggy dialogue, or "Doggish," and makes effective communication a reality.

Drawing on substantial research in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and years of personal experience, Coren demonstrates that the average house dog can understand language at about the level of a two-year-old human. While actual conversation of the sort Lassie seemed capable of in Hollywood mythmaking remains forever out of reach, Coren shows us that a great deal of real communication is possible beyond the giving and obeying of commands.

How to Speak Dog not only provides the sounds, words, actions, and move-ments with which we can effectively communicate with our dogs, but also deciphers the signs that our dogs give to us. With easy-to-follow tips on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with one another, original drawings illustrating the subtleties of their body language, and a handy visual glossary and "Doggish" phrasebook, How to Speak Dog gives dog lovers the skills they need to improve their relationships with their pets.

I love the fact that I can begin to understand what my dogs are saying! It's like learning sign language...only it's dog language. I have been able to apply a lot of what I've learned in this book to convey what I want from my dogs. They really do seem to understand me better, as well as me understanding them. Wonderful book. Every dog owner needs to read this book. It would make a great gift for a dog owner.

Really like this book. I found this book a great read and it gave me a greater understanding and real incite into the canine's mind. For all those things your dog does and you don't know why or maybe you think you do, but you were wrong. This is definetely a MUST READ for any dog owner!

        4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2007-03-09

With so many dog training books out there, it is refreshing to find one that discusses meaningfully how to communicate with your pet. If you're looking to dive deeper into this issue, check out "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne. Combining animal training with philosophy and literary criticism, it offers excellent insight into how animals communicate and respond to humans. The Atlantic Monthly called it "A fascinating and often surprising discussion of animal-human encounters." If you are an animal trainer-- or even just an animal lover--it's definitely worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this book for the appendix.......2006-12-27

From my reading, I understood Conlan's mission not to convince any of us that dog's have a language per se, but rather to cultivate our understanding regarding how dogs communicate through vocalization and body language--as well as their perspicacity in reading our own body language. I agree with one reviewer that this book might be beyond the average dog owner--I'm an average dog owner. But Conlan's descriptions of facial expressions (wrinkles, ear position, muzzle positions), vocalizations (growls, barks, yips) and body language (tail position, body position etc) could very well save your life; and I found this information alone more than recommends the book. It is packaged in the appendix for ready reference.

I was particularly glad to understand how to spot a dog that was confidently aggressive v. scared aggressive. Both are dangerous, but how you react to each is different. Every dog owner should understand this--for he/she needs to understand it for his/her own dog(s)as well as with any confrontations other dogs.

For purely practical information regarding dogs and the top issues that dog owners must wrangle with, I recommend Leader of the Pack. But with Conlan, you'll get specific understanding regarding dog body language as well as vocalizations to ensure success in reading the animal's state of mind. These two books together will give every dog owner the confidence and knowledge they need to be confident, responsible dog owners.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-07-01

I had my doubts about this book. I am a professional dog trainer, and a animal behaviorist. I would not recommened this book for your average reader. However it covers the basics of canine behavior very well and I would recommend it to anyone who trains dogs, or works with groups of dogs and wants a deeper understanding of their social interactions.
Reads a bit on the scientific side, so if your reading for entertainment you will probably be bored. If your reading to learn and increase your knowledge, you will probably enjoy.
