4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2006-02-23

Ben Miller has written a novel filled with scenes and people so interesting that they leave you wanting more. The interaction of the characters as well as the way in which their scenes are scattered throughout the book are unique. From the actions during the war through the consequent happenings in later years, his characters are not only people with flaws but also with strengths and surprises.

Hopefully Ben Miller will write more!

Book Description

In his four-volume series Return to Neveryeon, Hugo and Nebula award-winner Samuel R. Delany appropriated the conceits of sword-and-sorcery fantasy to explore his characteristic themes of language, power, gender, and the nature of civilization. Wesleyan University Press has reissued the long-unavailable Neveryeonvolumes in trade paperback.

The eleven stories, novellas, and novels in Return to Neveryeon's four volumes chronicle a long-ago land on civilization's brink, perhaps in Asia or Africa, or even on the Mediterranean. Taken slave in childhood, Gorgik gains his freedom, leads a slave revolt, and becomes a minister of state, finally abolishing slavery. Ironically, however, he is sexually aroused by the iron slave collars of servitude. Does this contaminate his mission -- or intensify it? Presumably elaborated from an ancient text of unknown geographical origin, the stories are sunk in translators' and commentators' introductions and appendices, forming a richly comic frame.

5 out of 5 stars The most lyrically beautiful prose I've ever read........2006-09-25

I read "Tales of Neveryon" on the airplane. I hate flying, I get nauseous, yet reading this book turned it into a delight. I don't remember another time when I savored the words so much (Storm Constantine comes close in "Wraeththu"). I usually like action & plot, scifi, space opera, and epic fantasy, and I don't like stories, so this was a surprise. I don't know how, or what it is about it, but it was simply pleasurable to read. Here's a random paragraph:

"What a glorious and useless thing to know, she thought, yet recognizing that every joy she ever felt before had mere been some fragment of the pattern sensed dim and distant, which now, in plurality, was too great for laughter - it hardly allowed for breath, much less awe! What she had sensed, she reallized as the words she could not hold awy any longer finally moved in, was that the world in which images occurred was opaque, complete, and closed, though what gave it its weight and meaning was that this was not true of the space of examples, samples, symbols, models, expressions, reasons, representations and the rest - yet that everything and anything could be an image of everything and anything - the true of the false, the imaginary of the real, the useful of the useless, the helpful of the hurtful - was what gave such strength to the particular types of images that went by all those other names; that it was the organized coherence of them all which made distinguishing them possible."

The sentences are long, the paragraphs can go on for several pages, but the language just flows...

Also, make sure to read the Appendix, it's a crucial part of the book. It talks about discovering ancient tablet and deciphering the language, uncovering the story that inspired the collection of these tales.

This book is what made me a Delany fan. I wasn't crazy about "Babel-17" or "Nova," it's amazing how different his writing styles are. I'm yet to make another attempt to conquer "Dhalgren." But I loved "The Einstein Intersection" - it has the same musical, magical, haunting quality to it as "Tales of Neveryon."

Just writing this review and quoting the book left me a little breathless, made me want to read it again, and get the rest of Neveryon books! (As soon as I get a job...)

5 out of 5 stars Read the Series--Understand the Book.......2004-06-23

Before anyone indulges in the luxury of on-line criticism, one should at least know (and respect) the correct spelling of the authors name. Samuel R. Delany (like the literal French for "of the New York", abbreviated), by his own admission, wrote Tales of Neveryon partly in repsonse to his own consumption of the Conan stories by Robert E. Howard, and Fritz Liebers (occasionally in collaboration with L. Sprague deCamp) Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser fantasy/fiction swords/sorcery stories. The French critics epigraphs which open the stories display SRDs depth of knowledge of literary criticism, although those critics and analysts of literature and society may no longer be popular. SRD also demonstrates his knowledge of archeology, ethnology, mathematics, physics, astronomy, and seamanship to a degree in all of the four (actually five, including Triton) books that are explicity about Neveryon, which itself is an intriguing "pun" or translation of a supposedly factual (it is, sadly, not) lost text or codex from repositories in Istanbul, Turkey (from which, only in 1906, the original proof by Archimedes for the volume and the area of the sphere were found in palimpsest form).

SRD indulges in the use of arcane terminology, as well, not in a bombastic way, but in a manner that will make you curious to research the meaning of the word. The tales, overall, are delightful, fascinating, and relevant to modern times in more ways than any individual could express. One leads into the other in a logical fashion, except perhaps the last book, alternatively titled "The Bridge of Lost Desire" or "Return to Neveryon", and all four (excluding Triton, which I have not as yet read) make a cohesive and interlocked whole experience and pleasurable, thoughtful reading.

4 out of 5 stars Poetic, if uneven.......2003-10-05

Delaney is a stylist; I'll give him that. His prose often sounds like poetry. It's especially noticeable in novels like _Nova._ Unfortunately, he has a tendency to be almost incomprehensible (try _The Einstein Intersection._) Of course, some of _this_ book, which consists of five interlocked stories, in almost incomprehensible. Delaney makes the mistake of actually thinking some of the most irrelevant French philosophers make sense--he uses their quotes to open every story. The quality is very uneven. In one story he spends pages on his theory of money, and only shows he doesn't understand what is it. Right on the heels of that one he discusses his version of [phallic] envy. The last story in the book slightly indulges Delaney's...fantasies. The first story is a pretty good introduction to a decadent society, and the politics of court life. Overall, it's a very good book, not really sword-and-sorcery, or fantasy, or science fiction. Mostly, it's just Delaney. It won't appeal to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy with a point.......2003-02-19

If you're a big reader of fantasy, you might notice that sometimes the writers try to use their fantasy stories to make some sort of philosophical point, maybe try to comment on male/female relationships, or something equally weighty. More often than not, these come off as heavy-handed and clumsy, oversimplifying their point hideously to make sure everyone "gets it" and then hammering the same point home over the course of several books to the point of tediousness. Those type of books annoy the heck out of me. So it's nice to see someone actually doing it right with this book. Delany's fantasy world isn't strictly fantasy, per se (it has elements but is more like the world right when writing was first invented) but it's certainly not our world. So he creates this detailed world, shows it to us and then proceeds over the course of the stories in this book to make comments on our world and use the characters and situations to explore similar situations in the "real world". All of this is done without him standing up and screaming "Look! I'm being didactic!" and most of the time unless you're looking for the specific commentary, you won't even notice, that's how subtle it tends to be. Even better, Delany tends to just make his point and move, without laboring over the same idea in story after story. His ideas are different, too, than what you'd normally find in fantasy, it's not the usual "men and women don't understand each other" he looks into things like currency, the origins of feminism and the sexual nature of slavery. And even without the intellectual angle to these tales, they're entertaining in their own right, Delany's characters and settings are enormously exciting, and while there's not an overarching plot to the stories, characters do carry over from tale to tale and develop over time. And for all his examinations, Delany never forgets the most important thing about a story . . . keeping it interesting. His world is rendered with enough detail to fill several books and fortunately there were three other Neveryon books after this one. But those who think fantasy can't ever be smart should start here and see what else can be done with the genre. As fun as it is, it can't always boil down to "good versus evil."

5 out of 5 stars An interesting look at humanity........2003-02-09

"Tales from Neveryon" examines many facets of human existence, from gender roles to marriage (the slight hint of S&M mentioned by a previous reviewer) to the way the devlopment of the concept of money has changed us. When you read this book you get a chance to step outside of human culture. For the first time you see, objectively, the forces at work within society and within us. You see the way the past shapes the present, and the way your preconceptions shape the way you perceive the world.

This is an incredible book, well worth the time taken to read and understand its many complexities.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive, violent and a damn good time!.......1999-04-16

Grendel Tales: Four Devils, One Hell is one of the most stunningly inventive comics I have ever read. While not by Grendel creator Matt Wagner, it is a flawless and absorbing return to the Grendel series. While not exactly the most ideal place for a newcomer to this series to begin, the storyline is easy to get into and hard to put down. This was actually my introduction to Grendel, and I was instantly engrossed by the tale of Mantovani, the hard bitten P.I., Gloria DeVere, the female art collector, Alfred Bixby, the psychotic and drug-crazed madman, and Calhoun, the cool and mysterious gambler who is not all he seems. This book is a must have for anybody even remotely interested in comic books, and for people who enjoy Grendel, it is essential. James Robinson weaves an intricate story that is beautifully realized by the painted art of Teddy Kristiansen. The only thing I can say is "wow". That and Vivat Grendel!

4 out of 5 stars The electric, violent, and visceral return of Grendel........1999-03-12

The long-awaited return of the Grendel series kicked off with Four Devils: One Hell, the first arc to not be written by Grendel creator Matt Wagner. While lacking in the intensity of character marked by the previous Grendels, James Robinson weaves an interesting an exciting tale in the New Orleans of the future, more than augmented by the breathtaking artwork of Danish artist Teddy Kristiansen. Easily the best of the post-Wagner Grendel tales, and a great jumping on point for new readers.

                            Book Description

If you are one of the more that two million people who have visited the web site at iCuban.com: The Internet Cuban, you already know who these Three Guys are. If you are one of the more than six billion people alive today who have not, a little explanation is in order. They are Three Guys From MiamiTM who share a passion for good food, good conversation, and a great party. Are you are new to Cuban cuisine? If so, then you are about to enter an exciting world of flavor. Cuban cooking combines the tastes of Spain with the tropical flavors of the Caribbean. Throw in some New World spices and ingredients and a strong African influence and you have the essence of Cuban cookery. These recipes also reflect ingredients and methods that were refined by Cuban exiles after they came to the United States. Here they found an abundance of foods that were either very scarce or completely unavailable in Castro's Cuba. Fish and seafood are two examples of foods that were only rarely enjoyed in Cuba after 1959. It was also impossible to get real olive oil-an ingredient that gives so many Cuban dishes a distinctive Latin flavor. Exile in the U.S. also exposed Cubans to ingredients they never saw in Havana. Salmon is very popular with Miami Cubans, for example, but unheard of in Cuba. Wherever possible the Three Guys have made these dishes simple to prepare. You don't need to be a professional chef to create any of the recipes in this book. Best of all, you don't need to be Cuban to cook and enjoy them. If a Swedish guy from Minnesota can cook Cuban food (and he does it very well), you can too! They have madge several appearances on the Food Network. Glenn Lindgren first came to Miami in 1984 and fell in love with the city, the people, and the Cuban culture. A freelance writer by profession, Glenn documents the antics of the Three Guys From Miami in books and on the Internet. When not in Miami, Glenn and his wife live in Minnesota with their son and two daughters. Raul Musibay, born in Cayo la Rosa, near Bauta, in the province of Havana, spent one winter in New Jersey but has been a full-time Miami resident ever since. He is the manager of the Red Bird Amoco station there. He and his wife have two married children. Jorge Castillo was born and raised in Cayo la Rosa, Havana. He came to the United States via the Mariel Boatlift in 1980, then left Miami after three months to live in Iowa, where he became a respiratory therapist. Now the regional sales manager for a major medical products company, he makes his home in Miami's West Dade with his wife and two daughters.

Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban I am married to a Cuban and have lived in Miami; my mother cooked in the latin way. This book is very authentic while making the recipes very easy. I would recommend this to everyone.

It's odd. I object not at all to cookbooks that are infused with the author's personal stories and flair. But this one, I'd rather just have the recipes. The recipes are remarkably good, mostly quite simple to prepare, and well-written. I use them all the time.

I just pretend that the hokey over-the-top bonhomie of the authors isn't there. Mind you, this is only because I think in person, I wouldn't like them very much. But I like their food a lot, so I just focus on that.

Being of cuban desent and growing up next to my grandmothers kitchen I can say that this book is an excellent guide to true cuban cusine. I especially liked some of the different version that were put into the book on different dishes. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Cuban cooking.......2007-03-31

This is a great book for Cuban cooking. It is also great for other (non-Mexican) South American recipes. Having lived in another South American country, I see many recipes that are familiar. I HIGHLY recommend this book to all who love to cook or eat Cuban food. You will not be disappointed!

even though this book is written for the American farmer, I found a lot of the information quite helpful to me. I have not been farming very long. We work with beef cattle on grass and it has been a steep learning curve for us. Thank you for such well articulated good sense. I have taken initiatives that I thought were sensible and this book has either confirmed my ideas or given me a better way to approach the situation. I have also appreciated the statistical information given about the cattle. Thank you and God bless

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I know nothing about cattle, my husband has raised them since he was young. I wanted a book that would explain the "little things" to me so I wouldn't have to ask him day in day out what this meant, what they are doing, how will we know when they are in heat, etc. It's very interesting, easy read and very informative.

You will learn something from this book, you can tell it is wrote by someone who has been around cattle. It was very easy to read, after I finished I put mine on the shelf to use as a reference.

                            Book Description

In this lavishly illustrated volume, Christine Churchill establishes the definition of the new American collectible and shows how -- by using a discerning eye and armed with basic know-how -- talented individuals and seasoned collectors can create their own signature design aesthetic and apply it to their homes and their lives.

American vintage style has evolved and changed. Gone are the old-style American antiques: Chippendale highboys stuffed with precious "smalls" in museum-perfect homes. Today, interesting and unique homes showcase character-filled objects; old number signs with bright graphics; weathered finials; funereal vases; mercury glass collections. The Collector's Eye shows that the best rooms are not the result of excessive spending and "decoration" but are a reflection of how the owner's passions and ideas can result in a collection that is both deeply personal and valuable.

By examining individual collections that range in aesthetic from folksy arts and crafts to urban modern, Churchill offers a wealth of ideas and information for all budding collectors and enthusiasts. Complete with informative sidebars and detailed caption photos, The Collector's Eye describes the intricacies of these objects, imparts tips on sleuthing for them, offers practical advice on their placement and upkeep, and guides readers on today's hot collectibles and how to go about building their own special collection.

I have a very mixed reaction to this book. There are some very lovely rooms and objects, but for the most part there is nothing out of the ordinary here (with the exception of marvelous ironwork fence bits). Some interiors could be swapped out from one house to another without jarring the eye. Too much designer influence and not enough passion and eccentricity.

5 out of 5 stars Luscious photos, unique collections.......2004-04-22

I'm a bit biased since our home is featured in the book, but Christine has put together a great design source that focuses on unusual collections. The photos by her husband are luscious and artistic, putting all the objects in their most glamourous light. Her sense of style and design comes through in the way she grouped items and focused the collections, and the text is thoughtful and tells some interesting stories. If you're the type who likes flea markets and antiquing for the unusual find, this book is a must. If you're contemplating starting a collection, you need this too. If you're a designer stuck in a rut of programmed newness, this book will help loosen your style and inspire you.

The title of this book is a gross overstatement and highly misleading. It is in no way a complete guide to glues and adhesives. A more approiate title would be "A Craft Persons Guide to Glues and Adhesives" because thats all the book is. If you're not a craft person this book is not for you.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Grateful Woodworker.......2004-06-22

Woodworking is not all about "Titebond II," contact cement, and 5-mintue epoxy. Most of us woodworkers do not even know how and when to use them correctly. If your creative (I wish I were) there are times when art forms and mediums intersect. "The Complete Guide..." written by Ms's. Young and Ward, IS the book needed to handle this "event." Using the advice and guidelines in this book, I have been able to incorporate some very beautiful designs in box making.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book with great projects.......2002-03-05

This book would be an welcome addition to any crafter's library.

It is an excellent reference, and fun to look at as well. She includes the up-to date information on glues and adhesives and certainly answered my questions about which to use for what.

Many times I am uncertain which one to use, since many projects do not specify what type of glue or adhesive to use. Sometimes this meant disappointing results, when I chose the wrong glue. This book has come to the rescue on many occasions since I could be sure of good results.

I am the happy owner of Nancy Ward's new book,The Complete Guide To Glues & Adhesives. As you can probably imagine, it tells everything that there ever was to tell about glues and adhesives. Nancy always knows exactly the right solution to solve any problem with stamping or crafting, and can explain it so easily. She put all of her practical knowledge and loads of research about glues into this book, and it still has her easily understandable approach. It is a loaded with information that is important to everyone who uses glues and adhesives. It is also loaded with some pretty great projects, and instructions. This book is a fabulous resource, and one that I know I will refer to often. I think you'll be impressed with the knowledge and scope that Nancy offers in this book.

                                                  Book Description

Originally published in the Soviet Union in 1963, this is a Stanislavsky centennial collection. It contains excerpts from memoirs referring to the great Russian actor and stage director. There are passages by Maxim Gorky, Anatoly Lunacharsky, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, Yevgeny Vakhtangov, Sergei Eisenstein, Emile Verhaern, Maurice Maeterlinck, Max Reinhardt, Jacques Copeau, etc. Most of the materials presented in this collection, including the brilliant letters by Stanislavsky, are little known abroad, and appear in English for the first time. The collection is lavishly illustrated. "The theatre is the finest medium of intercourse between nations. It reveals their most cherished aspirations. If only these aspirations were revealed more often ... the nations would shake hands, and lift their caps, instead of training guns on each other." - Konstantin Stanislavsky
