Ashley and Jen.......2001-08-16
I found this book VERY good. I like to read books dealing with the subject matter of Anorexia and Bulimia since I too struggle with those disorders.
This book is well written and really shows the complexity of the disease. The main character Ashley is truely troubled. Her character is written honestly and with an intensity that's refreshing. The disease is not pretty coated and shows you how the disease can take over your life and make you only focous on the disease and not every day occurences. Though I am not super religous I find that books dealing with this subject and religon do some of the best jobs in getting into a character's mind who has anorexia or bulmia. I also really recomend When is Perfect, Perfect Enough it's number six in a series called "Flag Pole Girls" That book is one of my favorites.
A Good Book!.......2001-04-01
This book is good. It talks about the concerns some struggles that Young Latter Day Saints may have. It talks about battling problems and coming out the better person.

Another Great Anthology By MZ Bradley.......2007-05-19
Tenth in the fantasy anthology series, you will enjoy this just as much as the first. Many great stories by familiar authors and some newbies. Another Shin'a'in story where the story's subjects are "blessed" by a "good luck" medallion and another story where the helpless rape victim is not what she seems. If you like fantasy or sword & sorcery, you'll love the series of short stories about women warriors, women swordsmen and sorceress plus the occasional ordinary woman. One of my fav stories is about a shape shifter who is a rabbit and is embarrassed until she is thrown into a situation where rabbit skills excel!

Crockpots Rule... But This Cookbook Does Not........2006-11-30
Vegan crockpotting is the best thing ever. This cookbook was not my first foray into this made-for-lazy-people-like-me brand of cooking that is sweeping the nation; after finding countless creative, delicious and easy recipes for free on the internets, I thought it would be nice to have a book to consult, rather than the unglamorous and dangerous way I'd prop my laptop on the kitchen counter to consult as a I dropped things in my crockpot.
There's no delicate or easy way to say it: This cute little cookbook basically stinks. First of all, there aren't very many recipes, but the worst part is that the recipes aren't very tastey or interesting---and they heavily rely on very processed foods like "canned vegan gravy" (what the heck is that?) and "vegan sausage" (gag). I am giving this two stars because if you are brand spankin' new to crock-potting, and don't give a darn that your food is not especially nutritious or interesting, then heck: this might be the perfect cookbook for you.
There's a terrific database of WONDERFUL vegan crockpot recipes on the fatfreevegan dot blogspot dot com website that'll make you want to crockpot until your fingers bleed. This one will only inspire you to put your crockpot back for another thirty years, which you absolutely should not do. Trust me.
Dynamite Comes in Small Packages.......2006-11-15
This little cookbook is AMAZING! Every recipe I have tried is delicious and unbelievably easy. I highly recommend Italian Sausage and Peppers - hearty and just the right amount of spice. The Portabella Stroganoff was a bit expensive to make, but well worth it - my family went wild over it. For an easy dish, make the Mushroom Parmesan soup. In the Irish section, you must try Vegan Shepherd's Pie - I used homemade mashed potatoes and it was to die for. Finally, the Tangerine Tofu is exquisite. I hope Michelle Rivera writes another cookbook soon!
Simple is as simple does.......2006-04-28
Nothing fancy here, but if you need a few quick slow-cooker recipes always on hand, well, here you go. I especially like the stuffed peppers. I found this did the trick as far as comfort food that reminded me of my dear old mum.
As for the real cook, why would you need a cookbok anyway? Go to culinary school. Open a restaurant where people - including a deer-hunting grandfater - actually want to eat.
Not a happy buyer.......2006-03-11
I've made 2 of the recipes so far and am reluctant to try more. If I had known what I now know BEFORE I bought the book, I'd never have bought it.
The first recipe was a complete bomb: the Tofu and Vegetable Curry, p. 105. I found it too hot and also bitter. Thin, watery gravy; very hot; and a nasty, bitter taste -- yuck! I love curries, but this was by far the worst I've ever tasted. I'll never make it again!
The Butternut Squash Soup, p. 98, was a little better. I liked it, but my husband didn't and wouldn't eat it (complained of a sour-milk taste). The soy milk and perhaps also the margarine had curdled over the long hours of cooking. And since cut-up squash isn't available in my town, the recipe took an hour of hard work, mostly to dismember a fresh butternut squash. I'll make this again when I can find cut-up squash, but I'll leave out the soy milk and margarine during the slow cooking. When the slow cooking is done, I'll puree the soup, then add the soy milk and margarine, and reheat gently on the stovetop. I think this will avoid the curdling and yield a creamier product.
My recommendation to others: don't waste your money on this clunker.
Unimpressive.......2006-02-14
As a vegan for almost 10 years, and someone who loves to cook, I am constantly searching for new cookbooks. While the recipes in this book were easy to follow, the few that I tried did not taste very good. I tried four of the recipes, being faithful to the instructions. The recipes seemed to rely on an overdose of spices. I was not impressed. Simple, yes. Tasty, no.

Very helpful.......2002-02-01
This book is what i use in collecting early U.K. coppers. It has photos of the different varieties and has been very helpful to me. The best i could find in this field.
Excellent Reference Book on the Coinage of England!.......1998-07-25
Richard Lobel has put together a definitive work on the coins of the UK and England from 1066 to present. The information is at its most informative when establishing rarity or variety. There are many line drawings to help the reader establish the differences in many of the earlier hammered coinage of England. This is in addition to the wonderful pictures of coins that are throughout this reference.
I would whole heartedly recommend this book for the serious collector of the coins of England and the UK.
The finest handbook of English coinage available today!!.......1998-01-01
The 1998 edition of the catalogue is vastly superior to previous editions of the work. The historical information, the pricing, the photographs, and the quality of the binding are all unsurpassed for reference works of this type. I am especially pleased with the line drawings that have been provided to help numismatists distinguish the various varieties of the Edwardian pennies. The collecting tips which are provided for each issue are also useful for those who have not spent a lifetime collecting the series. If you collect English coinage you MUST have this work on your shelf.

* Over 700 pages, with illustrations & line drawings
* Over 50,000 prices

* Comprehensive general index
It is time to dive into collection and what can be more intriguing than the coins that you see and hear about in old English movies. Add to that coins that represent historical events and people. It is always safer to have some for knowledge and this is the book to give it.
Has some very good features.......1999-05-30
While it is not as comprehensive as the "Seaby" catalogue, it does have some very useful features such as the rarities of the different mints and line drawings of the many different types of the Henry III, Edward I and earlier, making them easier to identify.
It does not include the Anglo-Saxon coins of before 1066, but is a very helpful resource for any English collector.

In 1975, when David Siff was 40 years old, his world turned upside down. Not only was he adopted, he learned, he was adopted by his own birth mother. Eleanor Segal had been forced to place her son in an orphanage for 14 months after his birth, but moved heaven and earth to get him back; when her son was 3, she even married a man she didn't love, just because Benjamin Siff promised to be a good provider and a good father. David's natural father, she told him, was the actor Van Heflin, dead for several years by this time. This bombshell revelation helps explain to the middle-aged Siff the tensions that simmered in his childhood home, and his own difficult behavior as a kid. But it also triggers major disruptions: he resumes the acting career he had abandoned in his 20s, begins drinking heavily, and shoplifts compulsively. His honest, meditative memoir traces a journey toward understanding his mother, a teenage rebel who squeezed herself unhappily into the mold of traditional wife and mother. His own wife and children bear with David during this trying period, and the story ends on an affirmative note, as documents from the Home for Hebrew Infants prove to him that his mother "lost friends, alienated her family, gave up her plans to be an actress ... to make sure she held on to her child. Her devotion to me was absolute." --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Eleanor's Rebellion is the extraordinary story of a man who discovered in middle age that almost nothing he had grown up believing about his parents was true.
When at the age of forty David Siff learned--in the first of a series of shocks--that he was adopted, he began a roller-coaster journey into his family's past. He discovered that his biological father was not the man who had raised him, but someone he had never met: the actor Van Heflin. He discovered that he had been born out of wedlock, placed in an orphanage at birth, and subsequently adopted by his own mother. He learned that his mother had not been the contented homebody he had believed her to be. He discovered the ambitions and frustrations of the woman who had given birth to him--the adventurous, rebellious young Eleanor, in determined pursuit of a new and better world and an acting career, who suddenly detoured into marriage for the sake of her child. He discovered the roots of his puzzling behaviors, casting his own acting career in a new light.
In his account of the fascinating and rocky process by which he finally came to know his mother--moving from shock to bitterness to an increasingly profound appreciation of her life--David Siff has given us a heartfelt and enriching book.
Customer Reviews:
amazing honesty told in gifted prose.......2005-09-15
I don't think I've ever read a more honest memoir covering such difficuly material. The author is unsurpassed in describing both his own, often bad, behaviors and the tough material of his family's life. Moreover, he shows very clearly what knowing "the truth" about family secrets can and cannot do.
I have studied what is called "the intergenerational transmission of trauma" and this book describes one form of it better than anything I've ever read. I also found the author's style to be both learned and lucid, often bringing in material from various experts in the field. I recommend it to anyone who has had to deal with family secrets or trauma, either in one's own life or as a professional.
The most APATHETIC book on adoption that was ever written!.......2001-03-27
An interesting story might lurk in "Eleanor's Rebellion," but a lot of it is lost in poor editing. This book is ruined by run-on sentences that point to the wrong objects, use of parentheses when another sentence would work better, and switching from past to present tense and back to past again David, the author (and protagonist) studied writing in college, but it's not evident in his book. The narrative sounds as though he recited into a tape recorder but did not tighten his sentences upon transcription. He discusses a scene and then goes back in time, and then jumps back to the present. He discusses wonderful photographs, which aren't included in the book. He also misuses a lot of long words in cases in which diminutive words would suffice. I was unable to read more than twenty pages at a time without cursing the editor. A final note on the format: the font used (for the first edition hardcover) is hard on the reader, in that commas look a lot like semicolons. This makes many hard-to-read sentences even harder to interpret.
David was put up for adoption by his biological mother, who visited him in the orphanage and who adopted him before his second birthday. David blames much of his life on the lie his mother told him. He cites journal reports of problems in other orphans of his time. He doesn't delve into his mother's obvious emotional problems that he might have inherited, nor does he discuss how his use of LSD might have led to some of his problems.
In the book, he is obsessed with the biological father he never knew. Perhaps some of his problems do stem from that. However, since he didn't know that he was adopted until he was middle-aged, he seems to mislay the blame of his apathy on this deep dark family secret. Instead of a victim, he comes off as a whiny brat.
David professes love for his wife when they first meet, but seems almost indifferent in her throughout the book - and in his children and siblings.
Again, I feel that a great story lies in "Eleanor's Rebellion," but the author is clearly not a writer. A spell check and a thesaurus do not an author make. There is no passion in a subject that always seems to be enveloped in enchantment.
The best virtue of this book would be its ability to teach. A high school composition teacher would do well to give copies to a freshman class to edit and correct. I may contact my high school comp. teacher; I think that he would enjoy the challenge.
You can't make this stuff up.......2001-02-17
David Siff is a brilliant writer whether under his birth name, or his well respected sports work as David Falkner. This autobiograpy has a new twist in every chapter, and since we know that he is Van Heflin's son from the start, we play along with his life knowing the secret he has yet to learn. A fascinating moment - lunch at a Hollywood studio commissary with Heflin in the room, and David invited to join the group.
Worthwhile.......2000-12-13
Very well written; unusual and worthwhile firsthand story
WELL WRITTEN, SELF-CENTERED ODYSSEY.......2000-10-17
This book was exceedingly well-written and seemed very honest, true to the time periods in which the story took place, had some humor and light-heartedness, all the while telling the poignant story of the author's mother, Eleanor, who bore him illegitimately but refused to give him up as the times and her family situation dictated, and so she consented to marry a man who loved her enough to keep her secret and together they "adopted" him and began a rather conventional life. The author was a somewhat difficult child (aren't we all?), raised in a somewhat dysfunctional family (aren't they all?), but the love and devotion were always freely given and freely taken. The story told here is absorbing and is told in an elegant fashion, but then the tone changed so drastically during the last 70 or so pages that I ended up finishing the book with a bad taste in my mouth. Turns out the boy--now a 40 year old man with a family of his own-- finds out about his birth and can't handle the fact that his mother was not truthful with him about who his real father was (or is that sperm-donor?) . . . So he does what most self-absorbed people do in one way or another, only he does it in spades. He drinks, shop-lifts, quits his profession, plays around on his wife, fathers an illegitimate child of his own (with whom he never has any contact), finally leaves his wife and children, and above all, is downright mean to his mother, the woman who basically gave up her future in order to keep this child. He is mean to her for the rest of her life and I find this so profoundly sad that I guess I am having trouble focusing on the book/story as an item to be reviewed, rather than an issue to be dealt with. My lingering question is: how could a woman (the Eleanor of the title), a daughter of immigrant parents, be so selfless and at the same time raise a boy/man who feels his perceptions/feelings/right to know/ supercede anyone else's feelings/right to privacy/right to live their own life? And what makes him think that the world revolves around him and his so-called problems rather than, say, the possible problems of the child he refused to acknowledge? Where did this profound selfishness come from? That said, I guess a book review should not take issue with the subject or tone of a book, and so I will say that in my opinion the book was well written, easy to read, but again proves that the secret adoptions of the early part of the 20th century did virtually no one any good. So sad.
