Product Description
In 1816, 36-year-old Elizabeth (Betsy) Fry walked alone into the horrific Newgate Gaol (jail) as a minister of the Society of Friends (Quakers). The transformation she brought to the female inmates there propelled her onto the stage of world history. This is Betsys story, a woman whose life and commitment still inspires Christians to stand up for their beliefs and the rights and respect due to even the poorest and most neglected of Gods children.

A must for history buffs .......2007-02-01
Reviewer Carolyn R Scheidies
Born a Quaker in a fairly well-to-do home in England, Betsy could have lived a life of leisure. But, despite her ill health, a tendency toward depression, fear and doubt, she felt a call on her life and persisted in that call at a time women were supposed to be seen, not heard.
She quietly, and not always so quietly, began to reach out to those less fortunate, helping the poor and down-and-out. She really made waves when she entered the notorious Newgate Prison and by sheer determination and persistence, changed the way a society viewed punishment, prisons, prisoners and reform. ...
But this book is far more than a simple biography. It is a graphic picture of 19th Century Europe, especially England. ...an invaluable resource for historians and authors. [..].
Compelling and enlightening.......2006-07-01
This biography of prison reformer Elizabeth Fry was an eye-opening account of a woman far ahead of her time. I can't imagine what it was like for her, in the early 19th century, to descend into "the hell" of Newgate Gaol, specifically for the purpose of understanding and sympathizing with the female prisoners held there under horrendously awful conditions - but Hatton's dramatic descriptions helped to bring it all to life. Betsy began a one-woman campaign to convince the judicial system that a more humane approach was not only valid, but entirely necessary. Fighting against her own personal physical illnesses, the disdain of those who refused to see things her way, the difficulties of long-distance travel, and the closed-minded attitudes of her day, she continued on with determination and fortitude and a firm belief in the importance of her task. A fascinating journey, a well-written story, and an enjoyable read.

Prison Reform.......2001-04-20
This book is a simple biography of a late 19th century prison reformer, Elizabeth Fry. Elizabeth's work among female prison inmates is told via the experiences of a young girl who, along with her brother, lives through the trials of life in London in Victorian England when poor and uneducated. Elizabeth Fry is a Quaker, and shares her religion and Scriptures with the prison inmates, but the book (and Mrs Fry) refrain quite nicely from being "preachy" while doing so. The book is definitively Christian, unquestionably moralistic, and could lead to discussions with youthful readers regarding the purpose of prisons and how justice, punishments, and what is considered criminal behavior have changed over time.

You Gotta Get a Wok and Stir-Fry.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Stir-Fry Dishes" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them, some very good recipes in this delightful little stir-fry book, like the Tuna with Spicy Salsa on Page 17 which apparently was Gayle and John's favorite dish in the book. But, of course, I'm not surprised at that, because John was a great fisherman and caught a lot of tuna during their travels in the big blue Pacific. Dub and I are fond of it too, but we really like the Lemon Chicken on Page 38. There is a lot on offer in this little book, stir-fry from around the world, like the Stir-Fried Moussaka on Page 77. If you don't stir-fry you gotta get a wok and start, you'll just love it.

A great introduction to stir-fry and wok cooking........2003-01-05
In its almost 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Stir-Fry Dishes, starts with a brief introduction into the basics of cooking in a wok and a glossary of stir-fry ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of stir-fries, from fish and shellfish to pasta, noodles, rice and even desserts. Special chapters are dedicated to poultry, (red) meat and vegetable stir-fries. Classics such as chow mein, teriyaki and sweet and sour dishes appear next to unique recipes such as coconut pork with lime, five-spice salmon, jasmine-scented shrimp, lobster in mustard cream, Malay curried clams, maple-glazed apples, pork with melon and mango, and toffee pears and mangos.
From Arabian chicken in pita to zucchini with prosciutto, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the wide variety of stir-fry cuisine - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended for fans of Asian cooking: this series' installments on Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Chinese Cooking, and on Curries and Indian Foods.
Stir-Fry Magic!.......2000-07-25
This book is absolutely wonderful! The recipes are as delicious and exciting as they sound, and I have wowed family and friends with my wonderful creations based on the recipes in this book! Only a few, minor criticisms: some of the dishes are a bit bland (they could use a splash of wine or a few more spices); also, I have cooked in a wok before, so they recipes were not challenging to me, but to a beginner wok-cooker, there might have been just a few more tips and suggestions as to how one cooks in a wok. But otherwise, I just received another book from this series (Book of Fondues) and can not wait to start some more cooking!

Critical edition is a must for Wells students.......1997-01-30
War of the Worlds is one of the most important science fiction novels, but its importance can be difficult to see without some knowledge of the time in which it was written. Using essays (some by Wells himself) and copious footnotes, this critical edition does a fine job of placing War of the Worlds into its proper context
Book Description
Eating the Moosewood Restaurant way every day has never been easier.
Whole grains. Fresh fruits and vegetables. Lean, nutrient-rich fish. We all know the virtues of a well-balanced diet—of choosing foods that nourish our bodies and respect the environment—but as the world around us gets busier and more complicated, we also know how difficult it can be to prepare a wholesome, satisfying supper. With an emphasis on healthful natural foods, Moosewood Restaurant has operated successfully for more than thirty years and has been acclaimed as a driving force in the world of creative vegetarian cuisine. Now the Moosewood Collective goes back to basics with Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers to deliver fresh, imaginative, and quickly prepared dishes for the weeknight table that are also delicious and reliable.
Shortcut Chili. Creamy Lemon Pasta. Warm French Lentil Salad. Pine Nut–Crusted Fish. Mocha Sorbet. From soups and pastas made with just a few pantry essentials to crisp salads, stir-fries, sandwiches, and desserts, these easy-to-prepare recipes are brilliant as is. However, the folks at Moosewood realize that flexibility is the cornerstone of weeknight cooking, so you’ll find clever ingredient substitutions, alternative cooking methods, and serving suggestions alongside the recipes in Simple Suppers—it all depends on what’s in the fridge and what sounds appetizing at the moment. Make extra Fresh Tomato and Mozzarella Salad on Monday and toss leftovers with hot pasta for Tuesday’s supper. No onions for Black Beans with Pickled Red Onions? Try the beans over rice with Quick Avocado and Corn Salsa instead. The 175-plus recipes in Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers are as flexible as they are flavorful—the perfect go-to for a quick, healthy meal any day of the week, any time of year.
We crave simple food.
We want cooking at home to be a small pleasure—relaxed enough that we can enjoy the process as well as the results. When we mentioned to friends that we were thinking of doing a book of recipes for simple suppers, inevitably they exclaimed, “That’s the one I need” or “Write that book for me.” The idea of simple suppers strikes a chord within us all. We hope this cookbook will help make suppertime a welcome, peaceful time of your day.

Great Meals for Harried Families.......2007-09-28
I'm lovin' this book! My goal has been to move my family toward 3 meatless meals every week, and this book is helping greatly. Of course, I still have to PLAN what to eat, and actually MAKE it, but that's MY problem...
Simple suppers quick and good.......2007-05-21
This is yet another wonderful book for the non-vegetarian and vegetarians as well. The recipes are simple to fix on those nights when the last thing you want to do is fix a complicated meal. Most take less than 30 minutes to fix and consist of easy to find ingredients. A great addition to the busy cooks life.
outstanding vegetarian cookbook.......2007-01-18
I purchased the Moosewood Restaurant Simple Suppers cookbook for our daughter who is vegetarian, She prepared 5 of the recipes for us during the time she was home from college over winter break and we loved all of them. We were impressed that most of the ingredients were things we typically purchased and not difficult to find items. I am not vegetarian but I am going to order the book for myself for all the delicious healthy recipes,,..food lover in Iowa City
Easy, simple and delicious.......2007-01-16
I originally checked this cook book out of the public library and then I re-checked it out again and when they wouldn't let me have it the third time I figured it was time to just buy it. I also bought 3 extras to give for gifts because I liked it so much. As a cook, I want simple, quick, delicious and healthy meals for my family. This cookbook offers all that!
This is a great cookbook for both the seasoned cook and the beginner. The recipes are interesting but very easy and quick to prepare. I also like the suggestion box at the bottom of each recipe that tells you what to serve with the recipe so that you aren't just serving random dishes together. Very user friendly and lot of fun to cook with!
Easy, Delicious Recipes - LOVE Moosewood!.......2007-01-16
I'm a big fan of the Moosewood Restaurant cookbooks. As a vegetarian, it can be a bit of a challenge to find cookbooks that contain recipes with short ingredients lists, with simple easy-to-find ingredients, that have interesting and delicious flavor combinations. Moosewood accomplishes all of this in the Simple Suppers cookbook. This is the cookbook I use most often when determining what to make for dinner on a weeknight. The recipes are quick and do not disappoint when it comes to flavor and healthfulness!

Book Description
The Anchor Embroidery Series offers the perfect introduction to popular embroidery techniques.
Crewelwork is one of the oldest embroidery techniques; associated with the 17th century and often known as Jacobean embroidery, it is as popular today as it has ever been. Historically worked in soft wools on twilled linens, today's embroiderer is discovering just how successfully the techniques can be applied to stranded cotton threads and a wider variety of fabrics.
Crewelwork embroidery is distinguished by its textured, almost three-dimensional stitches. This book outlines in step-by-step detail the working of 48 of the most versatile stitches, listed alphabetically for easy reference. Sixteen new embroidery designs show the stitches worked in context and trace-off patterns are included. The featured embroideries include traditional Jacobean motifs, contemporary flowers, and whimsical celebration designs. There are also ideas for using the embroidered designs on several small projects.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Among Description, Clarity and Design for learning Crewel Embroidery.......2007-05-26
I purchased this book in late 1997, and was/am very pleased with this decision. I was excited to learn new stitches, and ten years later, The Anchor Book of Crewel Embroidery Stitches serves as a reference for my own embroidery business.
The pictures are phenomenal, clear, close images, beautiful and inspiring designs.
The diagrams and descriptions of "how to" embroider each stitch are easily comprehended. I am easily frustrated with "how to" books - words do not convert well to images in my mind; however this book is a fantastic combination of written description and visual images.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to develop their embroidery skills by learning new stitches. The practice designs included in the book are quite pleasing. While learning embroidery I frequently dreaded practice designs because they were dull and uninspiring. But also found if I diverted from the designs, it made learning the stitches more challenging. With this book, you will enjoy the practice designs, and that converts into an enjoyment of learning.
This book is definitely a top value. Despite it compact size (approximately 6in x 6in), this book is quite a useful manual - loaded with information. I have numerous embroidery books, but this is the book I keep in my embroidery tote, and reference when I am designing a new embroidered piece for a client.
A very helpfull book.......2001-11-25
I found the trace-offs to be extreemly helpful in learning and using the various stitches tought in this book. The stitches are also set in alphabetical order for a quick referance on any given stitch. This is the best little embroidery book for the price.
Great Book!.......2000-10-17
This book is a great book for the novice and experienced embroiderer. It has beautiful color photos of the patterns in the book. Also excellent diagrams of the stitches used. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in this craft.

Decorative paint effects run the gamut from the simple mottled look of sponging or ragging to the textural appearance of crackling and the faux finishes of wood graining or marbling. Likewise, the required skill level ranges from the jump-right-in-and-start-painting variety to methods that can take hours or weeks to master. Author Karl-Heinz Meschbach is certainly a master of the craft, demonstrating 24 different finishes in his book, Fabulous Finishes for Your Home. He lays solid groundwork on tools, materials, and surface preparation, then fully explains each method with extensive how-tos and color photos of the process. Unfortunately Meschbach focuses so heavily on teaching technique that he occasionally can't see the forest for the trees: despite the great close-ups there are no overviews or illustrations to indicate what a particular finish might look like on a wall or a piece of furniture. If you're prepared to experiment and make a lot of sample boards--and you're good at visualizing what an effect might look like in another context--this is a fine reference for honing technique. Novices, however, will probably want to start elsewhere. --Amy Handy

The Faux Meister IS the Master!.......2001-03-04
This is the most intuitive book I have ever read on the subject. Karl-Heinz takes the time to explain in detail how to create fabulous finishes for your walls and furniture. This book is a "must have" if you are interested in creating faux marbles and wood grains. I have read many books on the subject and "Fabulous Finishes" is one of the best on the market.
