Book Description
Epic Bourbon Street portrays the rise of a gifted, young and penniless photographer - Aeneas Jam - who wanders Bourbon Street to capture its art. Discovered by an Uptown debutante, Aeneas transforms into a portrait photographer of New Orleans' aristocracy despite rival suitors and reverses of Fortune. Bourbon Street is a gallery of vivid portraits of the chimeras of Aeneas. Illuminating comedy and existential contrasts blend pixels into fine prose about the quest for a better life based upon one's dreams. Aeneas Jam's wanderings in New Orleans are an American jazz improvisation upon Virgil's epic poem, The Aeneid. Bourbon Street beckons you to the gallery of the dreams of Aeneas in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
Customer Reviews:
Oh I do miss New Orleans!.......2002-12-21
I am a long time fan of David Lentz! I am there in New Orleans as he draws me in, making the sights and sounds and aromas all fill me with longing to return to this city. Even the first page
captured me and I knew immediately this was a book I would treasure. The snow outside my home disappeared as I was there with a beignet and cafe au lait becoming friends with all the characters on the pages. I highly reccommend this book to everyone who has loved New Orleans and the writing style of Mr.Lentz who is able to work magic with a pen.
refreshingly different.......2002-10-09
I was in search of a novel set in New Orleans and was pleasantly suprised to find that David Lentz (a personal favorite of mine) had wrtitten this gem. Aeneas, the protagonist, was a very dynamic character; I could releate to many facets of his personnality. There was enough New orleans to make anyone dream of packing up and moving south, but it never overpowered the storyline. I highly recommend this, as a beach novel or curled up under a blanket on a winter day. It is thought provoking and enertaining at the same time.
A thoroughly enjoyable,multifacted read.......2002-09-16
I have read this book twice; once during summer holidays and then again this past weekend, and I enjoyed it in a different way very much each time. There is a greater maturity in the work than before; Lentz has learned to use dialogue effectively and with good wit, especially with the difficult dialect and idiom of places as diametrically opposed as Bayou Cajun country and Boston, Massachusetts are. His capture of local colour really washes well; I thoroughly like the story line, but even moreso the underlying, gurgling innuendo and hidden asides. The setting in New Orleans works really well too, and moves the book along.
Want one great reason to read this book? The first sentence........2002-07-18
Want one great reason to read this book? The first sentence. This handy bit of workmanship alone ought to be worth the price of admission, so to speak. I have always wanted to find a way to fit "reclining courtesan" and "perfumed mucksweat" into a single, opening sentence. And now, David's done it!
Want more? How about: "It was almost as if the agency were at a cocktail party at the Plimsoll Club with an outrageous joke it was afraid to tell."
But, I understand how some readers may want more for their money. That is, investing in a book solely for the first or a single sentence isn't probably reason enough. Fortunately, Bourbon Street has many, many more reasons why you should buy it and read it ... more than once.
If you have followed David's development as a novelist (officially, this is his third novel -- the others are worth reading as well, by the way) as have I, you can't help but recognize that he has a gift for plot, detail and characterization.
His plots are richly woven tapestries. They twist and turn, dip and rise and, finally, resolve, but not necessarily as you might expect. They are engaging and enthralling.
As for detail, David must be a research freak with a great memory. He certainly knows a lot about fishing in the Caribbean, investing in the market and now, living and revelling in New Orleans, or N'awluns, as the locals say it.
And then there's his characters. This is especially true in his last two novels. As with any well-written, well-populated book, as is this book, once you get to know those who inhabit his world, you simply don't want to let go. Of course, then there are the women. David's female characters are strong, intelligent and beautiful. Better still, they are not at all averse to using those characteristics/skills, when necessary, as a businees tool or weapon. And why not? They bring to my mind the controversial role Christina Ricci (as Liza) brought to the small screen at the close of the Allie McBeal series. Hey, if you got 'em, smoke 'em. I must also confess that I'd seriously consider giving up my favorite prosthetic limb to spend an evening with any of them. I dream of Lavinia, Didi and Camilla from Bourbon Street, and Kate North from The Day Trader. OK, back to reality.
More specifically about this book, Bourbon Street describes Aeneas Jack Jam's tortuous journey to maturity as an artist and, more important, a whole person -- not just a photographer with unusual vision, but a man who seeks place, peace and, of course, love. What gives this journey another texture or layer is that it is a modern tale told in an ancient template. It is no coincidence that the main character's name is Aeneas. His journey, metaphorically speaking, tracks the original Aeneas' journey as part of Virgil's great book, The Aeneid. But since David's work does not rely upon The Aeneid to stake out legitimate literary ground, I'll leave finding the many parallels in both stories to your own investigation. You'll have fun doing it.
I really enjoyed this book. It will be especially meaningful to you if you appreciate ancient classical literature, photography, chicory coffee, warm beignets, fishing, beer, New Orleans and, of course, more specifically, the French Quarter.
David deserves a great deal of credit for bringing this book to life. I look forward with great anticipation to his next work.

Reading the book.......2006-07-23
Upon reading this book, I found it to be quite...what's the word...hard to understand at times. Seeing as how I've read it so many times, I believe I understand all ofthe aspects of it, yet everytime I read it, I get a giddy feeling and have to go for the second book. The second book however, gets even more intresting. This book is great! I'm glad I bought the entire series. I wouldn't trade it for a low price, that's for sure.
Mitsuo, posessed by a young girl with a crush on a certain boy, admits that he is in love with a popular boy at an all boy's school. Mitsuo is a recluse and wants nothing to do with him. Still, the boy, Hasunuma, says that he'll go out with Mitsuo because it may be 'fun'. From there, things take a turn for the worst...or better...for Mitsuo.
This book goes from very funny to serious without thought. It has a quick change in pace when you read it and listening to the stories in the first book have you running back for the second, third, and fourth until you've bought the complete series. I know that's what it did to me. I'm such a sucker for BoyxBoy Love...

Interesting plot line, infortunate application.......2005-11-04
The premise of this story was enough to hook me. The first volume was enough to prompt me to buy the other three. Unfortunately after the first volume the story goes downhill.
The characters introduced begin to look the same, and a large household of bishounens and their lolita maids required me at some points to back up and reread scenes to determine which of the light-haired pretty boys was speaking to which of the light-haired pretty boys. Not that this confusion seemed to hamper the plot, which had by this point abandoned the story.
There are some very cute scenes in this manga, and the two main characters forming the focal relationship and also cute. The story line unfortunately tapers of into an unimpressive and blurry sort of ending, and there is only a vague resolution to the character's budding relationship problems.
It's cute I suppose, but I wouldn't buy it again and one of the friends I lent it to didn't even bother finishing it.
I'm surprised however by the reviews it's gotten on here, so I guess my advice would have to be this: go to a bookstore and flip through a few pages in the second or third volume. If you can tell the characters well enough apart and the plot lines seem good enough for you, go for it. Otherwise just sit back and wait because larger quantities and higher qualities of yaoi manga are coming onto the market. Soon there will be no need to just grab anything with a yaoi reference to get your fix.
Mad yet Cool.......2005-04-28
Eerie Queerie! is a mixed book for me. While I loved the quiet romance undertones and the mix-ups Mitsou goes through, the book just seemed lacking something substancial. However, it fit with the open feeling of the book, a light-hearted almost-love-story that keeps a smile on my face. Just thinking about the watermelon makes me smile. I wager that story would melt any sour face.
Do you believe in Ghosts?, Mitsou does!.......2004-12-20
And boy is he being plagued by them but that's okay! This story a subtlties of shounen-ai, which any fangirl will sure to love! I did, and I'm waiting so I can by the next one...I've been buying too many manga...So much that I have to look for DVD to sell... Great manga!
But about that ending..........2004-12-15
This series was going so well...until Volume 4, the last volume in the series. Even this final volume was doing well throughout most of the book, but crashed and burned after the commotion in the forest with the *cursed* doll. (That's all I'll say so I don't give too much away for those who haven't made it this far.) I actually would have been okay if the series had ended with the forest bit considering how bad the actual ending was. So here's the problem:
1.) The ending is out of character for Mitsuo. Based on his responses up to this point, he wouldn't have acted the way he did in the end. Yes, on the last page you saw a glimmer of the original Mitsou in the little student/teacher blurb, but the pages before that were way off-based for the little "cutie."
2.) The ending feels like there was a time limit on the final pages and the idea done with the least amount of time and thought won.
Even with this slap-dash ending, the rest of the Eerie Queerie series is so good that you'll wish there was a Volume 5. (and 6, 7, 8...)
P.S. The super-deformed bits are very cute. For an overload of sweetness, check out the "Watermelon" story in Volume 1. If you take a liking to Hasunuma, take a look at the fold-out inside Volume 2.

We love cake!.......2006-01-26
I'm the mother of two kids, ages four and two, and they really, really like cake. Happily, I really like cake too and have spent lots of time looking on the internet for interesting ideas for birthday cakes and was always sadly disappointed. So imagine my delight when my sister gave me this book - it's really easy to read and to follow (and it stands up on it's own so you can easily see the recipe) and the cakes are WONDERFUL! And the cookies and cupcakes. I want to make everything in the book and am glad Easter's right around the corner because the Silly Rabbit Cupcakes are next on my list.

Mary Engelbreit has been inspiring crafters for years with her vibrant, whimsical designs, and her colorful holiday volume Christmas Ideas Make Good Cheer continues the trend. Featuring lots of cross-stitch plus crochet, knitting, painted wood, blanket-stitched appliques, fairly easy sewing, and a bit of polymer clay, the 50 projects all embody Mary's hallmark primary colors and cheerful style.
A cross-stitched mitten ornament sports pairs of cherries, her famous "fried egg" flowers bedeck a black velveteen bonnet, a mantelpiece boasts decoupaged wooden letters spelling out Believe. The beautiful cross-stitch projects are somewhat advanced, but most other items can probably be handled by the novice, especially with the extensive directions and clear photos. Mary fans will especially enjoy the fact that every project was inspired by one of her greeting card illustrations, which are featured near the relevant projects. --Amy Handy

Good Greenland guide - Crappy Arctic guide..........2007-06-01
For those who want a good read and a good guide to fascinating Greenland, then this book will do it (though I think the previous edition of LP's guide to Greenland had a bit more coverage - especially the more off-the-beaten-track settlements). But anything beyond Greenland, LP seems to really lose interests in the rest of the Arctic world. It seems as if they just threw in a few sections just to say that they've covered it... It should really be titled "Greenland and an Introduction to the rest of the Arctic". All they give you are some sloppy details of a few selected regions under their "suggested itineraries" sections for other Arctic regions.
Living in Northern Canada myself (Yukon by the way...not Vancouver), I know that there are tons to offer for any Arctic fan. But this LP guide has missed out so much...to mention a few:
1) Yukon - there's more to this territory than just Dawson and Dempster Hwy...such as Old Crow, Vuntut & Ivvavik Parks, and simply the rest of Yukon itself. BTW, Whitehorse, which is the hub of the Yukon, sits at about the same latitude as Qaqortoq in Greenland. It's sub-Arctic...but close enough...
2) NWT - Yellowknife, the areas around Great Bear Lake such as Deline and Tulita, etc... same thing, its all sub-Arctic environments similar to Inuvik's...what's the problem?
3) Nunavut - there's a lot more places than just Baffin Island or Resolute...how about Kitikmeot and Kivalliq regions? Every region of NU is worth a visit.
4) Nunavik (Northern Quebec) - how could they forget this beautiful Arctic region of Quebec? Colourful villages, beautiful landscapes, rich Inuit culture ...even the LP guides to Quebec/Canada mention very little on this region. Better do your planning online... though slightly southerly regarding its latitude and location, this place has nothing but Arctic landscapes and climate.
5) Northern Labrador - another beautiful Inuit region of Labrador completely forgotten on this so-called "Arctic" guide...
6) Scandinavia - Northern Norway is very beautiful, but this guide only gives you a vague idea of this fascinating region. Buy the individual guides instead (Norway, Sweden, Finland...but don't bother with the "Scandinavian Europe" unless you only plan to see only a few places from each country)
7) Arctic Russia - I know its a difficult place to go to, but there are fascinating untouched areas out there in Siberia. But this book covers very little of this vast region...especially the Far East - Chukotka. Even LP's "Russia" guide is next to useless to this region if you're really interested into visiting these areas. Once again, do your homework online...
8) Alaska - get the "Alaska" guide instead...
I was quite disappointed with this LP publication. I hope their next edition will be a heck of a lot better. Otherwise, its a waste of time and money. It's really just a Greenland guide ...but for the rest of the Arctic, don't count on it...
Perfect for those few travellers headed to Greenland.......2005-11-19
Apart from Antarctica, this is the most obscure place covered by LP. Half of the book (about 165pp) is specifically about Greenland in the customary LP format, and the remainder is about other Arctic regions. (One tidbit: It is impossible to fly to Nuuk, the capitol, without changing planes in another Greenlandic town.)
This guide covers a casserole of places that cannot conceivably be visited on a single itinerary, because so few Arctic air routes cross national borders. For example, charter flights between Canada (Iqaluit) and Greenland were terminated after the book went to press, so now it's impossible to fly from North America to Greenland without going through Europe.
Alaskan coverage is only Fairbanks and points north; Yukon is Dawson and north. The Inuvik region and nearly all of Nunavut are covered. Places like Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Anchorage are too far south to be covered in this volume, which is unfortunate because it's impossible to reach northern Alaska without passing through either Anchorage or Whitehorse.
Also covered are Arctic Russia, northern Norway (town of Mo and north), and northern Finland (Rovaniemi and north). The end result is a book that's fun to read but of doubtful utility except for those few Greenland-bound travellers.
A take-along 'must' for any destination-bound traveler.......2005-09-05
The second updated edition of Etain O'Carroll & Mark Elliott's Greenland & The Arctic is out, and is an indispensable guide for any heading North sans travel group. From overviews of regional history and culture to local sights, activities, and opportunities, Greenland & The Arctic highlights all kinds of opportunities, from transportation options between small towns and remote regions to rare shopping opportunities and plenty of nature. A take-along 'must' for any destination-bound traveler; especially since relatively few other titles cover the region in depth.

Product Description
A great little piece of history. This was probably a handout given to Ingersoll-Rand customers in the early 1900s. The front cover has "Compliments of Ingersoll-Rand Company". The front portion of the book contains 60 pages of pictures and specifications for products such as Pneumatic tools and accessories, chisels, jackhammer steels, rock drill accessories, paving breakers, blacksmith tools, air compressors, oil furnaces, wood borers, etc.... The catalog is undated, but is marked as "5th edition" on the front pastedown, which should help date the book. The back half of the book contains approximately 100 or more pages of blank grid or quad paper for taking notes.

A Perennial a page.......2003-03-13
The format of this good looking book is very useful: each plant on a page, with a facing page picture. Haggard isn't trying to be exhaustive, but point out the 100 of so perennials he has found work best in the Lower Midwest. As such, its very useful, and has been a major resource for my garden. Each page is well written so it doesn't feel like a boring reference work. He still manages to get the information on sun, soil and water needs for every plant. It's a bit dated now, there are newer varieties that might work better. But still, for a beginning gardener, this is the place to start. One note, this book doesn't contain roses or shrubs, but his newest book tackles them.
Helpful book for lower midwest gardeners.......1997-04-24
I found this book to be very informative and well organized. I have found few books that address gardening for the lower midwest ( I live in Southeast Missouri). While this book addresses only perennials, it is worth adding to your gardening library if you live in this area

Book Description
Death and the way society comes to terms with it have become a major area of scholarly and popular interest, as evidenced in the work of such well-known figures as Philippe Ariès and Elisabeth Kübler Ross. Photographs and other forms of pictorial imagery play an important role in these investigations. Secure the Shadow is an original contribution that lies at the intersection of cultural anthropology and visual analysis, a field that Jay Ruby's previous writings have helped to define. It explores the photographic representation of death in the United States from 1840 to the present, focusing on the ways in which people have taken and used photographs of deceased loved ones and their funerals to mitigate the finality of death.
Sometimes thought to be a bizarre Victorian custom, photographing corpses has been and continues to be an important, if not recognized, occurrence in American life. It is a photographic activity, like the erotica produced in middle-class homes by married couples, that many privately practice but seldom circulate outside the trusted circle of close friends and relatives. Along with tombstones, funeral cards, and other images of death, these photographs represent one way in which Americans have attempted to secure their shadows.
Ruby employs newspaper accounts, advertisements, letters, photographers' account books, interviews, and other material to determine why and how photography and death became intertwined in the nineteenth century. He traces this century's struggle between America's public denial of death and a deeply felt private need to use pictures of those we love to mourn their loss. Americans take and use photographs of dead relatives and friends in spite of and not because of society's expectation about the propriety of these means. Ruby compares photographs and other pictorial media of death, founding his interpretations on the discovery of patterns in the appearance of the images and a reconstruction of the conditions of their production and utilization.

Fascinating!.......2006-12-03
If you saw the wonderful film "The Others" you were doubtlessly exposed to one of those gloriously macabre Victorian traditions: the Mortuary Photograph. Yes, those images featured in that splendid little "Book Of The Dead" were real images of deceased individuals taken in the 19th century by bereaved relatives. The images in the film were from the collection of Stanley Burns, whose long out-of-print collection, Sleeping Beauty (and its recently re-issued sister Sleeping Beauty II), is considered the masterpiece of Mortuary Photography. However, if you can't seem to locate a copy of Sleeping Beauty, there is an alternative: Jay Ruby's Secure The Shadow. This excellent book may not pack the same photographic punch as Sleeping Beauty but the excellent text makes up for it. For many people in current times, the idea of photographing corpses and displaying them around the house seems unbearably morbid. However, Ruby does a good job of explaining the underlying philosophies of the time that made mortuary photography so popular. He uses newspaper clippings, old funerary photography advertisements, letters, and photographer's account books to explain the how the connection between photography and death developed and continues to this day, in a somewhat altered form. This book has made me want to start perusing Ebay on a regular basis looking for vintage mortuary pics. It's a tremendous hobby, really - and this is a very good book!
Secure the shadow, Ere the substance fade, Let nature imitate what nature made........2006-01-10
This quote was an early photography advertising slogan and is the thesis sentence for this outstanding analysis. Not as assuming or stylized as Sleeping Beauty, it has a wonderful perspective. I just love it. Makes you wish other authors would persue the subject. Having worked in the death care industry, and I think folks are just too removed from death. We are born ,live and die..and how we feel about death should be as contemplated as birth. This book allows us to do this, if you were raised removed from death, this book as well as Sleeping Beauty I&II are a good place to start feeling more comfortable with death as part of life.
great book for those interested in memorial portraiture!.......2003-06-01
this book not only provides information on post- mortem memorial photography, but early paintings as well.makes an excellent edition to sleeping beauty 1&2,as they do not cover paintings.take it from a long time hard core collector of this subject matter, sleeping beauty 1 and 2,and secure the shadow.great conceptual text as well.this is not only a book with pictures of dead people.all photos are blk&white, but there are a good number of realy fine ones.if you are interested in the subject or a collector, get it!
Pictures Of Dead People.......2000-05-27
Interesting picture book of dead people and funerals. In the mid to late 1800s, it was popular for people to take pictures of dead loved ones (almost like that person was still alive) as a rememberance of that person. No gore, or accident scenes.
This book explains why people did, and still do, take pictures of dead people and their funerals and use those pictures of those they love to mourn their loss.
Chilling.......1998-06-12
It's unfathomable to me how a young mother could pose for hours in front of a camera holding her dead child. Equally disturbing is the image of one's mantle strewn with photographs of the dearly departed in all their slack-jawed, glaze-eyed post-mortal glory. Nevertheless, this was the custom during the turn of the century, a time when those who could not afford photography in life secured in death. Photographing the deceased was an integral part of the grieving process and, especially in the case of children, often the only proof one had of ever existing. The delicate antique photos reproduced in this book are disturbing, sad and lovely, in that order. Customs may have changed--I don't suppose many of us carry snapshots from our grandparent's graves--but reverence for the dead is still evident in more recent pictures of modern, frilly, floral funeral decorations. Secure the Shadow is a well-researched, stunning volume of great interest to social historians, the morbidly obsessed, and the just plain curious.
