Book Description
Meet some familiar - and some less familiar - inhabitants of Bruach. Back with more comical escapades are Erchy and Morag, the philandering Hector and Hamish, with his unusual talent for nursing lambs. We meet also Bonny the cow, Crumley the bull, and Harry the hedgehog that make up 'Miss Peckwitt's colourful and uncontrollable collection of animals and other livestock'.

With Her Pen as a Paintbrush.......2002-10-22
Another wonderful episode in Ms. "Peckwith's" amazing chronicle of her years on the Scottish Island. With this book, the author really turns her pen into a paintbrush. "We sat together staring contemplatively at the startled looking sea wavelets racing before the fresh breeze, at the clean carved shapes of the Islands; at the gently blue sky strewn with clouds that looked as soft and inviting as white fur rugs; at mists lit with rainbows and mountains silvered with sunlight." The visuals of the scenery are quite simply breathtaking, as are the wonderful characters that just spring from the pages. With gentleness and a great deal of humor, the idiosyncrasies of the villagers are delivered in a forthright, but never condescending manner. The hygiene of this time and place will make a modern mama's blood run cold (and probably the postman's too) and the brutal work load will make you grateful for our modern conveniences. I predict you will love the charming journey into another place and time - but probably be glad you are traveling via armchair. While this book stands on its own, I am glad I read it after the other three Bruach books: The Hills is Lonely, The Sea for Breakfast and The Loud Halo. The book also contains a delightful little list of Gaellic translations and pronunciations. --Silly Old Cailleach Mamalinda

Book Description
Mapping a literary space uniquely his own, Evenson's CONTAGION AND OTHER STORIES pursues to a new level the crepescular and delirious exploration begun in his acclaimed and controversial ALTMANN'S TONGUE. In the O'Henry Award winning "Two Brothers," a minister breaks his leg while his sons watch then refuses to call an ambulance, remaining convinced even unto death that God will arrive to lift him up and make him whole. The self-acclaimed language specialist of "The Polygamy of Language" indiscriminately blends linguistics with murder. "Contagion" is a skewed retelling of the early history of barbed wire, which interweaves metaphysics and the Western genre. "Watson's Boy" shows a boy endlessly wandering the human equivalent of a conditioned response box while the protagonist of "By Halves" finds himself trapped in a relationship that may not exist. Throughout, Evenson's immaculate prose draws us mercilessly up to confront troubled and troubling lives that, astoundingly, are no less human than our own.

A Door Into the Dark, and Words About Words.......2001-02-10
I've read just about everything that Brian Evenson has published, and this recent collection was especially encouraging, as it contains some of his most adventurous and aggressive fiction to date (including the O. Henry Award pieces, "Two Brothers" and "The Polygamy of Language"). Some of the stories don't catch hold as well as others, but overall, in bleak tones and economic prose, Evenson lays bare the damaging inter-relatedness of language, religion, and violence.
Several of the stories in "Contagion" have a darkly cultish feel to them: a preacher rewrites scripture and his children are unsure of how or whether to resist him; a madman discourses on the origin of language while going through a polygamists' camp. Others have a somber and scientific pulse: in "Internal," an interning research assistant begins to suspect that the subject of his observations may in turn be observing him, or that the line between observer/observed might not exist at all; in "Watson's Boy," humans in (what the back cover tells us is) a conditioned response box vie against rats for survival.
For me, the highlight of the collection is the title story, "Contagion." As two hired hands walk a long stretch of barbed-wire fence, the clarity of their assigned mission--repair? report?--begins to fade, and they begin to distrust each other. One of the men keeps a journal of their actions, until, the two men separated from each other, the whole thing begins to unravel. At the story's end, one of the men is held captive in a room and forced to keep writing, until the clarity of the story itself begins to fade.
Evenson is able, in a short amount of time, to rig a perfectly normal story and then let it unravel as problems of language and fiction become thematized. Shades of Kafka, Perec, maybe, or some of Handke's earlier work. Often, fiction about fiction and language about language is just plain dull, but Evenson's compact, blunt prose won't allow that.
If you're interested in fiction that walks a little on the wild side, "Contagion" is a good buy.

Wonderful Book.......2007-04-13
I don't generally read this kind of book, but something about this just caught my eye. I think it was the description of "stock" and the explanation of it. I'm very glad I read it. It's a "what if" point of view that I find very unique. I absolutely loved the ironic parts, especially towards the end. The end itself was terribly unsatisfactory, but that just means I have to find the sequal. I recommend this book to anyone that can handle a few disturbing concepts and somewhat graphic imagery.
Resolutely downbeat..........2007-03-15
not necessarily a bad thing in this genre. The basic idea of the novel, a post-apocalyptic world in which debased humans are used a meat animals, is pretty well realized. Watching Howie gradually become aware of just what meat "animals" really are is the highlight of the book. My only criticism is that the author is somewhat inconsistent in his depiction of the technologic level at which his characters live. For example, in the early pages of the book, guns are described as being extremely rare and ammunition even more so. By the end of the story, and especially in the sequel, that clearly isn't the case at all.
borderline masterpiece.......2005-09-07
It's really too bad that the kinds of people who read post-apocalypse novels tend to be sub-literate and do not understand prose writing. As a result we are left with people endlessly praising predictable, tone deaf hack work, such as the egregious products of Stephen King or Larry Niven, while ignoring real masterpieces in the genre, for example, this mini-classic from Neal Barrett, Jr.
This book has a sequel that is also well above the genre average, though not as good as the original. Don't hesitate to purchase them both if you're that rarest of birds, a fan of the genre who actually appreciates good writing and original ideas.
Through Darkest America.......2005-01-09
Anyone who's read any book by Neil Barrett, Jr. knows that optimism is not the man's forte. He revels in darkness and cynicism. Perhaps it was a result of reading one too many syrupy tales of humanity's joyous rebirth from the ashes of apocalypse, but in "Throught Darkest America" he sets out to carefully eliminate all vestiges of hope. The resulting book is brutal, the back cover declaration "not for the squeamish" is an almost ridiculous understatement. But for those willing to tough it out, it's also memorable for its unique way of attacking the subject.
Howie, twelve year old at the start, lives in a frontier world centuries after "The War", where twentieth century technology has vanished. The whole country is now organized similar to a nineteenth century frontier town, with the government taking levies to support a war somewhere in the West. With all animals exterminated, food now comes from 'stock', human-like but apparently unthinking creatures raised on farms. Barrett reinforces this world building by writing the entire book in old fashioned American dialect reminiscient of Mark Twain.
Among its strengths is character development. Barrett expertly captures the awkward guilt of youthful sexual discovery in a conservative religious culture. Of course, Howie's peaceful existence eventually gets shattered, his family torn apart, and he sets off on a voyage towards the war zone, encountering life-changing treachery along the way. Much remains unexplained, with plot threads left dangling, but the point of the story, perhaps, is that in real life much is always left unexplained. In "Through Darkest America", it is the journey that matters, not the destination.
From Beginning to... Dud.......2004-01-22
This novel began to flesh out a "real world" of a post-apocalyptic nature, but so much is left dangling that I have to wonder if a series of novels was intended. Even if one feels a little pity for the protaganist in the beginning, in the end there was no genuine justification for the reasons and the methods he used to get even with the murderers. The ending was more of a punchline to one long and horrific joke -if you read the first few chapters and the last few pages, thats all that is really necessary for understanding the world Barrett created.
Book Description
Tea for two. That's what it's all about, right? So how come every recipe you pick up says "serves 4 to 6"? Or more! What do you do when you want macaroni and cheese, but don't want to be reheating it for three nights? Or a couple of cookies, but don't want to be tempted by two dozen sitting on the counter all week?
Creative cookbook authors and cooks Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough have all the answers in Cooking for Two.
Brimming with 120 smaller-serving, big-taste recipes,Cooking for Two offers cooks familiar favorites such as PastaBolognese, Chicken Pot Pie, and Mushroom Barley Soup, as well as new dishes for today's tastes like Pork Satay Salad and Snapper Fillets Sautéed with Orange and Pecans.
Simply cutting down larger recipes leads to wasted ingredients. But Bruce and Mark have developed each recipe so you buy only what you need, and use all of what you buy. Instead of opening a can of vegetable stock only to use three tablespoons, use the liquid the dried mushrooms have soaked in. If an onion is too large for a recipe, chop a shallot instead.
The dessert chapters are filled with cookies, puddings, and cakes, all designed for two servings. Small-batch baking requires strict attention to detail. A regular egg can be too big for a small batch of six cookies, so they suggest quail eggs or the easy-to-find pasteurized egg substitutes, which you can measure out in tablespoons.
Truly a cookbook for everyday use, each recipe is labeled as quick (ready in minutes with minimal cooking), moderate (requires a bit more preparation or cooking), or leisurely (perfect for quiet celebrations or weekend meals) to help you decide which dish best fits into your day.
With ingredient and equipment guides, as well as tips on how to stock your pantry to avoid those there's-nothing-in-the-house-so-let's-go-out moments, Cooking for Two will surely become the cookbook you reach for every night of the week.
It's just two perfect.

Not for your every day dinner.......2007-03-18
Although this book had some good recipes in it, it is not for your every day rush or in a hurry dinners, or for people who like to eat simple like us. But it does have some nice recipes in it and I have used it a time or two. But if you are a country bumpkin like me or simple folk, please save your money because this is not the cookbook for you.
Interesting, but just didn't cut it for me........2007-01-24
This is an interesting book, full of appetizing recipes, using regular, fresh and healthy ingredients. Although the author seems to trully understand the need to use ingredients responsibly, many recipes ask for things such as a single rib of celery, or a 1/4 cup of cream. Unless we have a plan for the remainder, we can find ourselves with lots of spoiled food, which is the evil of cooking for only one or two. Also, most recipes have 10-plus ingredients, which means that many times we can't just open the book, pick a recipe and cook. I think that the real turn off for me was the fact that there are no pictures. I love reading cookbooks and pictures really have a way of stimulating my imagination.
Most Handy Cookbook I Own.......2006-11-10
This cookbook is fantastic. Most recipies make enouch for dinner and lunch for my husband and I. They are super tasty. Symbols to inform you of the preparation are super handy. The cooking times on some recipies are odd, so be careful.
Great addition to my cookbook library!.......2006-08-23
I bought this book for me and my boyfriend to use... and we do so religously. We make a recipe from this book about once per week and are always delighted with the results. The recipes are easy to follow and if ingredients are difficult to find in your local grocery, substitute ingredient suggestions are made. We now have a few favorites we have added to our repertoire!
I also purchased a copy for my brother and his fiancee as a gift.
Don't bother.......2006-08-15
The recipes are poor and the inability to substitute is worse. Plus some of the ingredients are hard to come by. Better off with another cookbook, or just taking your favorite stand by cookbooks and learning to modify the recipes yourself. This book is downright bad.

Barbecue is not about grilling food fast over high heat. That's something else, delicious in its own right, but something else entirely. Barbecue is about marginal cuts of meat (for the most part), about smoke, about fires burning so low and slow you hardly ever see the flicker of a flame. Barbecue is about succulent pork ribs as dark as sin just falling off the bone and dripping with glorious sweet pork godliness. Or enjoying the effects that 12 to 18 hours of smoking has on beef brisket.
The trick is, how do you do it? How do you master a cooking technique all but ignored in favor of fast and hot? The answer lies in Smoke & Spice. Authors Jamison and Jamison provide all the information you're ever going to need to run a real barbecue. Tips and techniques abound on every page--accompanied with countless recipes that stretch the barbecue imagination. And seeing that one cannot live on barbecue alone (though that's a challenge well worth considering) there are just as many recipes included for all the good food that accompanies barbecue--from Scalloped Green Chile Potatoes to South-of-the-Border Garlic Soup to Buttermilk Onion Rings and even Bourbon Peaches. If smoke in your eyes makes your mouth water, this is the primer for you! --Schuyler Ingle

Great book with a lot of great ideas and recipes.......2007-08-07
This is a great book on smoking. It has great tips and recipes. Highly recommended for new and existing cooks who want to use smokers. We tried getting this type of information online and it just takes to long and the information is incomplete. This book fills in the gaps and doesn't leave you wondering.
Excellent book.......2007-07-17
A lot of recipes and very detailed information. A must have!!!
My only suggestion would be to dedicate a whole chapter to setting up the fire. There is no info about it in the book.
I think any barbecue book is incomplete without helping the user setup and maintain the temperature. I mean, this is not an oven where you can set it and forget it. Maintaining 200F in a smoker is a talent I think.
Impractical.......2007-07-09
Most of the recipes are too elaborate-- too many ingredients-- too much preparation time. This was a disappointment.
Winter reading and Summer smoking.......2007-07-06
Smoke & Spice makes you want to smoke something year round. You will catch yourself actually reading this cookbook and following it to the letter--then guarding your secret recipe! In the South we use hickory. After reading Smoke & Spice, you'll want to try every hardwood in the forest.
Smoked Foods.......2007-07-03
This cook book was great in helping a newcomer to a smoker. It's a great guide to how to use a smoker and how to smoke different foods.

There are recipes listed as typical of various parts of the country (their origin given). Tips are given as to the best variation of the products used in the recipes. Without tasting the results of the recipes it would be hard to believe how good they are. (Ever use both bourbon and molasses with pepper and chili powder??! It's great when used as they suggest!) Customer Reviews:
Excellent overall, but not the best for beginners........2006-04-11
Very good diagrams. Projects range from very easy to more advanced, following a logical progression.
Appears to be out of print.
For beginners, I recommend Hediaki Sakata's _Origami_.(Please note that Amazon has an incorrect subtitle on Sakata's book).
Never gets old..........2005-12-04
I bought this book when I was about 11 years old. I am now 20, and still use it. All the base folds are relevant for alot of the more advanced models that I fold. I will never get rid of this book, and it should be in every origami lover's library!
Excellent beginner origami book.......2005-09-14
This is one of the best beginners books there is. Models are grouped into chapters covering the different origami models with a range of easy pieces which will give the beginner plenty of practice with basic folds and techniques. The finished results are attractive and in some cases downright exciting - the Steve Biddle Father Christmas is one of my favourite models. I also like the Kawahata pteranodon.
The book progresses towards more advanced work which is nevertheless produced in the characteristic clear style of the books by Steve and Megumi Biddle. They use standard diagrammatic language so that once you have learned from this book you will be able to pick up most other origami books and work from them.
In addition, once you have made all the models in the book you will be an intermediate level folder and ready for more advanced challenges!
I recommend this book which will make a great gift, but be sure to provide some paper with it as it does not include a pack of origami paper the way some beginners books do.
Perfect for beginers.......2002-08-17
This is the perfect starting origami book it has wonderful digrams and most the models are pretty simple even the dragon shown on the cover is pretty simple, although there are a few harder models. The one downside to this book is there aren't very many origanal models although the ones that do exist are very cool. people just starting origami haven't seen that many models so what i just said isn't a problem for them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn the art of origami
Great place to start and mature.......2001-01-12
I bought this book to broaden the range of things that I could fold (knowing just 2 or 3 origami before reading this). It has exceeded my expectations. Not only did I quickly learn new things that I could fold, I also learned a broad range of fundamental patterns for origami, plus I found detailed instructions on complex models.
There are a variety of simple hat, box, flower, and animal models that you learn from the very start, but the patterns range up to much more complex models, like a wonderful Santa Claus origami that I've folded several times to add to Christmas presents. That one still takes me about half an hour to fold, but I'm working on it. This book covers many origami that can be made from a fairly broad set of basic folds, so you can go a long way with just this book.
The instructions are generally very clear with words and pictures for everything you need to do. The models do build on one another, however, and later in the book there are often back-references to previous pieces (which may themselves refer to earlier pieces). You should not expect to jump immediately to the most complex origami (unless you have significant prior experience, I guess).
I was prepared to buy a couple of books, if necessary, to learn a variety of interesting things to fold, but having purchased this one, I have not felt the need to buy another so far. I highly recommend this book.

A good idea book but..........2002-02-15
This book has some really interesting (and complex) examples of various rooms decorated with stencils. It also comes with some of the stencil patterns at the end of the book. But as a beginner, I find some basic information missing (and had to get another book as a result). This book assumes that one understands the basics of painting and stencilling. It does not explain, for example, what kind of paint does one use on walls vs on furniture. Despite the beautiful pillow on the cover, the book does NOT cover stencilling on fabric at all. And if one does not want to take on an elaborate project to cover all the walls of a room, there is no example on simple projects (such as adding just a border). If you are artistic, experienced with painting and stencilling and can visualize the results, this book is good.
Fun and chic.......2001-08-03
Fresh colors and designs give this book a current look. I'm always looking for new paint finishes to try in my home, and this book has given me new ideas, patterns, and complete instructions.

I bought 3 stenciling books. I have to say that this book was the most helpful. Not only does the book feature completed examples, but it also provides stencils as well as a resource directory. Many of the ideas are easy for the beginner that is eager to delve into creative home improvement projects. As a novice painter myself, I found the insturctions and layout very easy to understand. For $11.96, it is definitely a purchase you will be glad you made!
