Book Description

Burroughs Live gathers all the interviews, both published and unpublished, given by William Burroughs, as well as conversations with well-known writers, artists, and musicians such as Tenessee Williams, Timothy Leary, Patti Smith, Keith Richards, Allen Ginsberg, Brion Gysin, and Gregory Corso. The book provides a fascinating account of Burroughs's life as a literary outlaw. Illuminating many aspects of his work and many facets of his mind, it brings out his scathing humor, powerful intelligence, and nightmarish vision.

3 out of 5 stars The editor could use an editor.......2006-06-19

While any book collecting the words of William Burroughs, & particularly any Burroughs book of this size, is cause for celebration, this particular book has some serious editorial flaws. There is a great deal of alteration to the interview transcripts, there is repetition within the book & in relation to other books, & there are many obvious errors.

The interviews, says Sylvere Lotringer at the outset, were altered from their original form in order to better serve the flow of the book. While this is understandable or even necessary given the number of interviews collected here, some of the editorial choices destroy any sense of the original interviews. In several cases Lotringer collapses different interviews with different interviewers from different times into one, creating a fictionalized pastiche of Burroughs live. & in other cases the editing of transcripts is so severe, as with the Playboy drug panel, that Burroughs comes out seeming like the subject of the article when originally he was just another participant. The thrill of the interview format is in seeing how a particular subject creates on the spot, how he interacts with the other participants & how the ideas of his work transfer to his life. While there's a good deal of originals throughout the book, many interviews needlessly lose the spontaneity of the originals as a result of editorial tinkering.

In addition, there is repetition, particularly from other books that an avid Burroughs reader would already have. There is material reprinted from the Re/Search book on Burroughs, as well as Victor Bockris's With William Burroughs: A Report from the Bunker. The pieces culled from the latter are particularly frustrating, since that book was already a collection of interviews. In addition, those pieces tend to be edited here! To reprint interviews already collected in book form is wasteful, but to alter them further is absurd. We would have been much better off with the complete transcripts of previously unavailable material, rather than the inclusion of recycled, re-edited, already-available interviews.

Finally, there are basic editorial errors throughout the book. Typographical errors, sometimes quite embarrassing (as when Burroughs tells David Bowie of a sound below the level of hearing - below 16 'Mertz'!), litter the whole book. There are several times where paragraphs are repeated word for word on a single page. There are even interviews that end in the middle of a sentence simply because that sentence came at the end of a page. As an editor myself, I can spot the telltale signs of unchecked OCRing (optical character recognition) - in other words, the editor scanned the interviews into his computer, used the OCR program to convert it to a text format, & never bothered to check the accuracy of the results. Any competent copyeditor would spot such errors from a mile away & easily fix them; the fact that this book has been published without such necessary editorial attention is disgraceful.

That said, there are many interviews collected here which would otherwise be impossible to find. There are translations from French & German, there are reprints from the myriad small presses Burroughs associated with in England, there are curiosities & oddities that might not have otherwise seen the light of day. For these pieces alone, this book remains a necessary purchase for us Burroughsphiles. But the errors of the editor keep this book far from being the last word on his interviews.

That Burroughs is a fascinating read in any format goes without saying. For all the intelligence, humor, & world-weary wisdom he imparted, he surely deserves a better publication than this.

4 out of 5 stars covers every topic in existence.......2006-02-09

Wow, this book is enormous... but finishing it was not at all exhausting. Burroughs discusses a seemingly unlimited range of topics and ideas including conspiracies, state authority, language and the "word virus" theory, magic, Brion Gysin and the dream machine, cut-ups, astral projection, punks, the Beatniks, his books, various drugs, drug laws, and plenty more. Reading the interviews is an unbeatable way to get insight into this fascinating man, and to see the transitions he went through in his life. In his old age he seemed to have transformed into such a sweet and compassionate individual, and it is really very beautiful to hear the things he had to say by this time.
Many of the ideas that are undercurrents throughout his books are discussed in a straightforward, and casual manner in these interviews. This makes the book a very interesting supplement for avid Burroughs fans, and it reveals how amazingly insightful he was. At first I was a bit surprised that this book is published by Semiotext(e), whose books are consistently amazing and thought provoking (not that I didn't think his work is worthy, but the publisher usually puts out books of serious academic philosophy and political theory, while Burroughs is predominantly a novelist)... the connection became very clear while reading the interviews, especially the one in which Burroughs and many renowned French postmodern philosophers were in a conference together, including Deleuze and Foucault. In the interview based on this conference, many of their similarities are exposed. After reading this book, it became very apparent how far ahead Burroughs was from Foucault (a highly influential philosopher who examined power relations and how knowledge is tied to control), and how well their work ties together. Burroughs was always suspicious of power and deeply analyzed power relations and state authority, but his views were always freshly presented with a twist of his unique character, which makes his interviews an amusing read.

Some of them are a bit dry, and there is some repetition throughout the book... after all, they were never meant to be collected together. I wouldn't cut any of them, why opt for less when you could simply skip them? This is a nice book to own, because you can easily come to it at any time and read a single interview, but it really is amazing to read the whole thing front to back. Gives a different feeling than reading them sporadically.

4 out of 5 stars the genius heart of the beat movement.......2003-01-13

yeah yeah i know there are so many mad geniuses in the beat movement. burroughs however is the godfather of all. this book is the bible of burroughs interviews as well as his thought. there are a few interviews with his other beat cronies but most of them are just naked burroughs. some of the interviews are a little dry but i wouldn't cut a one of them.few could write with more imagination than w.s. and even less could say it better or be more thoughtful or provacative. god i miss him. to read burroughs is to never again think the same. what freud and jung etal claimed to know of the psyche only burroughs truly explored.long may he wave. i highly recommend this book. then after you get this read then tackle is compilation word virus

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!! Worth the wait!!.......2006-03-15

I waited 12 years for this sequel and was not disappointed; it made me want to go back and read the first two all over again. If you were a fan of the first two books, pick this one up; it explains so much and so opens up even more possibilities. A definite must read; I read the entire book in a single day. I just couldn't put it down!!

5 out of 5 stars fast-paced story that sucks you right in........2005-09-22

This is one of the best series I've read. I read Shifter and Nightfeeder in the early 90s and have waited very long for this third book. More than a decade later, I'm rereading the first two books along with this one, and the series is just as exciting and captivating as it was when I first picked up Shifter. My husband and I are both sci-fi/fantasy fans and have read many, many books. We both agree that this is definitely one of the best and can't wait for the rest of the series to be published.

5 out of 5 stars Yay!.......2005-06-23

Worth the wait! Just hope they keep their promise that it won't be another 12 years. Picks right up from Nightfeeder and delivers plenty of answers and character/plot developments!

Love the archetypal hero's journey, the shifting viewpoints, nice blend of complex character development/action/gradually revealing plot(s), well-developed background world and systems, integration of science and "magic". Right up there w/much better known series -- marjipoor, heechee, darkover, pern, paksenarrion, hed, earthsea, WOT, fire and ice, amber, dark tower, riverworld, "the trilogy" -- and hope it somehow gains greater recognition, at least enough to ensure the rest gets published!

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait? Strangely, yes........2004-01-05

I never would have thought that ANY book would be worth a 12-year wait. Along with many other Galen fans, I felt that such a long pause between "chronicles" was inexcusable and I wanted to know the reason for that pause. Lo and behold, found in the first few pages just before chapter one of "Dark Hunter," the Reeves-Stevens' answer that question for all of us.

Strangely, they had to wait alongside us all, due to some unfortunate publisher issues and a "soft" science fiction/fantasy genre. My worst fear was that the plot and concept had become so deep that there was no way for the authors to keep the story moving with ANY continuity. That wasn't the case at all. In fact, they mention that the last line of the ninth book has been known since the first line of "Shifter" was written. The explanation in the foreword put aside all hurt feelings, then hurls us back into the First and Second worlds, reuniting us with brilliantly designed characters like Martin, Bub, Orion, and even Saul Calder.

After reading the second page in the first chapter, the last 12 years of waiting seem to disappear as we are launched back to 1990. I can almost hear Jesus Jones or EMF playing in the background!

The wait is finally over, and "Dark Hunter" lived up to my own personal hype, answering many of the unanswered questions presented by "Night Feeder." You'll learn to love Martin, despise Roth, feel bad for Ko, and begin to understand the frustrations of Dr. Forsyte. Still, like any other great novel, more questions are presented in the third chronicle that keep us anxiously expecting the fourth.

The authors promise us at the end of this book that there will not be a 12-year wait for the next chronicle. Let's hope they keep their word!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this book!.......2006-11-10

This is a very helpful book that everyone should have!

5 out of 5 stars Book does exactly what the title says........2006-11-03

Just like the title says the book is full of hints to store food for a crisis. There are a number of excellent hints such as storing food that you would normally eat and turning over your stored food through your regular eating habits. The book also mentions having emergency clothing, food and water packed and ready to go because when a crisis occurs there will likely be no time to pack up supplies. You want something you can just grab on the way out the door. Hurricane Katrina is a good example. Having emergency supplies in your car is another excellent idea. Time and again we read about families being stranded without adequate clothing, food and water. Finally, one of the best ideas is to always have a ready store of hundreds of dollars in cash on hand.

3 out of 5 stars Disaster Preparedness Books.......2006-10-05

If you're like I was, you're looking through the various disaster preparedness books wondering which one is best. I have worked my way through 7 of the most popular books and offer a shared review of all of them here. I hope this comparison helps you make a decision.

Book 1: Crisis Preparedness by Jack A. Spigarelli
Like many of the disaster preparedness books, this one begins by answering the question, "Why bother being prepared?" It also outlines a framework for being prepared that includes accumulating supplies, getting mentally and physically prepared, and having your finances in order. One thing I particularly liked was the emphasis on the importance of knowledge. It wasn't just about what items you need, but also what skills and knowledge you should develop. But this book is mostly about food preparation for a major disaster, with emphasis on having a year's food storage, milling your own grain, growing sprouts, home canning, dehydrating, freeze-drying, etc. There are detailed tables showing the calories of various foods including their protein, fat, and carbs. The final third of the book offers advice on other topics, including weapons, hand tools, clothing, energy, medical, sanitation, transportation, communications, and home preparation. The book concludes with a list of recommended books and a brief listing of companies that sell disaster preparation items. Overall, this is a very good preparedness book. I probably should have given it 5 stars, but I thought it went a bit overboard on the food plan. That said, it is the most comprehensive of the preparedness books.

Book 2: Preparedness Now! By Aton Edwards
This is another thorough disaster preparedness book, one that focuses more on emergency situations (fire, chemical attack, etc.). It is organized into brief chapters (some only a few pages) on a variety of important topics, including: water, food, shelter, sanitation, communication, transportation, and protection. It is also filled with many packing lists detailing what you should get in preparation. It introduces the e-kit (a very lightweight kit to keep with you) and grab-n-go bag with more extensive items. Final chapters of the book discuss various possible disasters, including earthquakes, tsunami, infectious diseases, chemical and bio warfare, crime, fire, and extreme weather. Some of the commentary is a bit questionable, but the technical content is good. Note the deficiency with this book is that it does not offer any detail on food storage.

Book 3: Disaster Preparedness for Dummies
First of all, this isn't a book. It's a DVD video. I wasn't paying attention when I bought it, and was a bit surprised when it arrived. I generally like the Dummies series. They are well researched and serve as a good summary. This DVD offers a lengthy video discussing many disasters (hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, etc.), briefly outlining how you might prepare for them. It also has an overview of how you should react in case of a terrorist attack (nuclear, chemical, and biological). But the advice is all very general, and is more like what you'd expect to hear from your local weather station. For example, the video repeatedly advises you to "stay calm" and "evaucate in an orderly fashion." The videos are high quality, but don't expect detailed outdoor survival tips or food storage suggestions. Everything presented is relevant and useful, but it feels more like a FEMA public service announcement.

Book 4: Emergency Food Storage and Survival Handbook by Peggy Layton
This book is broken into six main sections. The first section offers decent but very incomplete summaries on preparing for short-term emergencies. The second section discusses how to store and purify water. The third part talks about the logistics of setting up a food-storage program, and has some suggestions on how to store food. The fourth section details what types of foods you should store. The fifth section has blank inventory planning pages. And finally the last section has some recipes. About half of the 285 page book is either blank planning pages or simple recipes. The first half of the book is pretty good stuff, but I found this book to be incomplete. It does however offer some good advice on food storage.

Book 5: Organize for Disaster by Judith Kolberg
This book goes an entirely different direction than the other preparedness books. Emphasis is on understanding the federal resources (i.e. FEMA, Red Cross, etc.) available, creating a personal intelligence network, organizing essential documents, maintaining insurance coverage, listing a home inventory, preparing your house for disaster, basic first aid, and having a good family communication plan. There is also a good list of necessary items to have on hand that would suit many common disaster. I recommend this book for its common-sense look at disaster preparedness. However, it is not the only book you would need, because it doesn't detail food storage, water purification, heating, etc.. That said, it covers some topics that the other books overlook.

Book 6: Making the Best of Basics, Family Preparedness Handbook by James Talmage Stevens
This book is almost completely about in-home food storage and preparation. There is little discussion outside that (except for basic water issues). Many chapters discuss food in significant detail, to include things like grains, recipes, preparing sourdough breads/biscuits, dairy products, honey, sprouting, drying of fruits/vegetables. At the end of this book is a huge compendium of preparedness resources, telling where things can be purchased in every US state.

Book 7: No Such Thing as Doomsday, by Philip L. Hoag, revised in 2001
This book offers well-researched insights into disaster preparedness. Topics include water, food, heating/cooking, light, power, communications, medical, sanitation, and security. Those subjects are well done. However, much of the book reads like a bit of doomsday prediction, with many pages devoted to scaring the heck out of the reader... focusing on missile attacks, chemical dangers, nuclear war, radiation, decontamination, communist threat, etc. For me personally, I would have like to see more pages devoted to likely threats (e.g. hurricanes, floods, earthquake, blackout, fire, etc.). Also note that Amazon may not carry the latest version (updated in 2001), so you may want to buy directly from the author.

Overall, if you can only purchase three books, I would recommend Book 5, Book 6, and either Book 1, 2 or 7. With those three, you should have a balanced look at common sense organizing, food storage, and emergency items to have on hand. If you can buy only one book, I recommend Book 1.

I've created a useful disaster preparedness list for your automobile on my Amazon author blog (just click on my name above the review).

Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Process of Elimination" - an intense thriller in which a martial artist, a greedy corporate attorney, and a conspiracy theorist try to stop a world-class sniper out to shape the next Presidential election.

Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.

3 out of 5 stars basic start.......2006-09-12

I found the book informative but a little on the basic side. It would be good if it gave a more indepth list on individual storage times for foods.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I was looking for!.......2006-04-19

This is exactly the book I was looking for. It gave me ideas I hadn't even thought of in terms of items needed for food storage & survival.

I appreciated the chart about calculating how much ingredients for bread making, so you can plan how much to stock up.

I also liked that she stresses not to get stuff if your family doesn't like it. It should really help to save money in stocking up.

This is a good book, and it will help you make a plan to stock up!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-10-22

Old-Time Farmhouse Cooking genuinely takes the reader back in time. With black and white photos showing people of its time, recipes and tips taken from magazines at the time. Here is a classic tip! I almost died with laughter. This tip came from Farm Life September 1927, "Every Farm Wife Needs...Several neat, becoming, washable house dresses." I can say times have changed when I drop my son off at Kindergarten, and a lot of the mothers are in sweatpants, no make-up and their hair is tied back.

There are some great recipes inside this book to: Irish Beef Stew, Apple Dowdy, Pickled Okra and Seed Cake.

If you yearn for Grandma's cooking, or if you are interested in historic America, please check into this book. It really is a nice book!

5 out of 5 stars A superbly presented collection of authentic recipes.......2004-03-06

Lovingly compiled by historic American cooking expert Barbara Swell, Old-Time Farmhouse Cooking is a superbly presented collection of authentic recipes with generational appeal and old-time flavor -- many of which are excerpted from publications circulated up to a century ago like "Farm and Fireside". Upbeat excerpts from 1900's era articles concerning farm life and the hardworking people who lived it add a very special atmosphere to such delightful and pleasing treats such as Verna's Icebox Butter Buns, Never-Fail Dill Pickles, Tomato Surprise, Swedish Orange Rye Bread, Meringue Chews, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Eye Candy Book for the Noritake Addict.......2004-05-03

Joan VanPatten's book is not for the china pattern enthusiast. This book is for serious Noritake collectors who want to see the broad range of products this fantastic factory produced in its early years.

This book only focuses on the "pre-war" years when Noritake's products were first being imported into the US and other nations. Joan's book provides excellent backstamp references so you know what you are buying as well as to know what the reproductions look like so you don't get taken.

You will see the eye-popping best of the best you may only see available on ebay or at a Nippon show. However, once you know what to look for and are educated; you can pick up some incredible deals from antique dealers or garage sales because you know what you are looking for.

The down sides, some of the pictures in this book are replicated in her other books. The price sheet is in the back at the book...very irritating when you are going back and forth from picture to price sheet to learn values of items.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but barely skims the surface of available patterns.......2000-05-10

Nice reference book, easy to follow with a price guide in the back. Unfortunatly, it has a limited number of patterns represented and no information on the types of pieces available for all but 4 or 5 patterns. I purchased this book hoping to learn more about the Rosemarie #6044 pattern I inherited from my father, but will have to try again with a different reference. I ended up keeping it for the information on patterns from the 1920's. It's helped me identify a Morimura Luncheon set from 1922 and other Noritake items I've purchased. The book also contains some limited information on old advertisements and some care suggestions for fine china.

    Book Description

Presenting a splendidly organized and illustrated book to simplify the identification of and search for heirloom sets of Noritake china. It consists of four sections showing some 700 patterns (1891-1953) with their backmarks, names and numbers, and hundreds of color photos. Offering several newly discovered patterns and adding significantly to the study of Oriental porcelains, this book will be a great relief to the owners, collectors, and dealers who must cope with the many mysteries related to early Noritake china. 2000 values. AUTHORBIO: Aimee Alden was a Noritake collector and dealer for many years, and she authored two works, Early Noritake China in 1987, and Collector's Encyclopedia of Early Noritake in 1995. REVIEW: This book deals solely with tableware produced by the company founded by the Morimura family between about 1891 and the 1950s, when today's familiar "N-in-wreath" trademark was adopted by the Noritake Company and post-World War II exporting was resumed.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2001-01-02

I found this book to be very useful. It's very well organized and well written. An only suggestion for the next edition is to have glossier/brighter/clearer photographs.

5 out of 5 stars User freindly and Informative - A MUST for any Collector!.......2000-03-30

I found this book to be logical and informative. The foundation of this book is based upon the chronilogical use of each mark. The patterns are then listed alphabetically within the time period that "mark" was used. Because of this book - all my freinds and colleages think of me as a "Early Noritake Expert" - I dont have the heart to tell them that I am not! I highly recommend this book to any and all collectors and/or dealers of Noritake!

          Book Description

Ships in Miniature is a detailed exposition of the author's techniques for making miniature ship models which he has developed over the last twenty years, and it incorporates the very latest techniques and outlines all the newest materials and tools. To this extent it is a clear and detailed survey of the advancement of the art of miniature shipbuilding. It sets out standards and provides ideas for methods of research and clear step-by-step instructions for construction and display. The choice of materials, construction techniques and methods of care and conservation are all outlined in detail. Ships in Miniature is intended as the standard work on the subject and is a source of invaluable information for both the builder of large scale and miniature models. While the text deals with making models to a scale of 1:192 (16ft = 1in) or smaller, much of the information will be helpful to people making models to larger scales.

The areas of ship modelling focussed on include materials, tools, preparation and basic techniques, hull construction, fittings, spars and rigging, and display and care.

Lloyd McCaffery began making models in 1963 and became a full-time ship modeller in 1969. He has won numerous awards and written articles for a wide range of journals.?

                    Book Description

Tennessee Williams wrote letters to his family, friends, and theatrical contacts as he wrote his plays; with an eye for precise detail;, self-deprecating humor, and lyric grace. Tennessee Williams's innovative approach and natural lyricism transformed American drama after World War II. Both major and minor works continue to be performed worldwide at the same time that his earliest (and previously unproduced) plays make audiences remember what theatrical excitement is all about. Now, the first volume of The Selected Letters of Tennessee Williams takes the author from boyhood through high school, college, and tentative productions of fledgling work to screenwriting at MGM, culminating in his first major success with the autobiographical The Glass Menagerie in 1945. The letters detail, in the playwright's own words, the painful intensity of his early life as the Williams' family drama creates a template for the plays to come. Presented with a running commentary to separate Williams's sometimes hilarious (but often devious) counter-reality from truth, The Selected Letters, Volume I: 1920-1945 (which includes 330 letters out of nearly 2300 collected) has been meticulously edited by two of this country's premier Williams scholars. Albert J. Devlin, professor of English at the University of Missouri, and Nancy M. Tischler, Professor Emerita if Pennsylvania State University, author of the first critical study of Williams's work, Tennessee Williams: Rebellious Puritan). Work on this project is being supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin. The Selected Letters of Tennessee Williams, Volume II: 1945-1983 is scheduled for publication in 2002. With b/w photographs.
